E.J. Rolfes received the Explorer of the Year Award, Shea Archie received the Explorer Officer of the Year Award and Joseph Najarian received the Bradley E. Jordan Outstanding Service Award. Explorer Post 1 is made possible through the Boy Scouts of America and is comprised of young ladies and gentlemen, ages 14-20, who have an interest in fire service, emergency medicine or public service. Members meet twice a month to learn about firefighting and rescue operations, and attend various other events throughout the year. If you are interested in joining, call 704-920-4260.

The City collaborates with Habitat for Humanity throughout the year on many initiatives to help people realize their dream of home ownership. Recently, several City employees volunteered their time to help install siding on a new Habitat for Humanity home in Kannapolis.

The Kannapolis Fire Department recently held its annual Awards and Appreciation Senior Captain Banquet at the Laureate Center. More Chris Morris than 200 fire department personnel, family members and special guests attended the event.
Engineer Jeremy Abernethy
Congratulations to Senior Captain Chris Morris, who received the Larry C. Phillips Fire Officer of the Year Award; and Engineer Jeremy Abernethy, who received the Danny E. Scott Firefighter of the Year Award. Morris is a 10-year veteran of the fire department and has been a senior captain for just over a year. Abernethy has been with Kannapolis Fire Department for almost 12 years. These are the highest honors Kannapolis firefighters can receive from their peers.

Are “Flushable” Items really Flushable?
D
id you know that items advertised as “flushable” are not good for the sewer system? Most sewer spills are the result of flushable items clogging the system.

Flushing these items may block sewer pipes, causing untreated wastewater to back up into your home and nearby waterways.

Sewer systems force wastewater through the pipes, but “flushable” items do not have enough time to break down between being flushed and entering the system, which results in those items becoming trapped in the pipes and causing damage or a spill.
