As our City begins the post-COVID-19 recovery process, we want to thank you for everything you are doing to stay healthy and safe.

Please continue to follow the recommendations of wearing a mask, staying home if you’re sick, social distancing and washing your hands.

Kannapolis Waste Services Resume

T

he collection of white goods (appliances) and electronic waste has resumed. These services were suspended in March due to COVID-19 when Waste Management instituted stricter safety protocols for its employees.

We are working diligently to continue to deliver services to you and your family. In the weeks and months to come we will be evaluating daily when and how to resume our programming, events and athletic offerings.

The collection of garbage, recycling and yard debris continues on a normal schedule.

The City of Kannapolis contracts with Waste Management for the collection of garbage, recycling, bulky goods, electronic waste and white goods (appliances). Yard debris is collected by City crews.

All garbage and recycling items should be placed at the curb in your cart. Please remember, garbage should always be bagged.

Recycling should not be bagged. Never put trash in your recycling cart – when this is done it contaminates the entire truckload and the City is penalized at the recycling center.

If you have garbage and recycling items that cannot fit in your cart, please ensure they are in sturdy bags or boxes that the motorized armed collection trucks can pick up. If they do not meet these criteria, the items will not be picked up.

Restaurants Coming to VIDA in Downtown Kannapolis (Construction at Halfway Mark) VIDA, a private public mixeduse district, which will include apartments, restaurants and retail space on West Avenue, is on target to open in winter of 2020/2021.

Armor Beer Company, we will be announcing plans this summer to bring entertainment options to the lower level of the old buildings on West Avenue.”

VIDA is a stimulus for private investment in our City. Lansing Melbourne Group (LMG) is investing $61 million to construct 286 apartments, 18,000 square feet of new retail and renovating 36,000 square feet of historic retail space.

The City’s investment will include a 400-space public parking deck.

“We are also happy to announce that R&R Bar-B-Que will open a new location in the gorgeous old Cabarrus Bank building. They will be announcing details of their exciting new plans later and hope to open by the end of the year,” Gregory continued.

Construction is at the halfway mark. Windows are going in and installation of brick is beginning.

Framing for doors, elevators and stairwells is now underway.

The project is located between Main Street and West Avenue on two blocks of property, including the location of the former State Employees Credit Union. The four-acre site is also home to Old Armor Beer Company, which opened this Spring and has been so successful they anticipate increasing their production later this year and expanding into the space next door.

“A small veteran-owned business like ourselves could not ask for a more supportive city. Patrons of Old Armor Beer Co., from Kannapolis and surrounding areas, have shown tremendous support for their hometown brewery. Because of that, we have an opportunity to grow,” said Kyle Lingafelt, general manager and co-founder.

Kent Gregory, VIDA co-developer with Peter Flotz, commented on the project by saying, “In addition to the expansion of the Old

Sabor Latin Street Grill will open its newest location in Kannapolis; the second location operated by Deal Restaurant Group. Sabor began locally in Charlotte in 2015. Deal Restaurant Group’s owner, David Deal, is a Kannapolis native and the founder’s original business partner. “We’re excited to bring Sabor to Kannapolis, especially with my family’s history in the area. I have so many great memories here, I can’t express how much it means to be able to take a part in its revitalization,” he said. Sabor will be located near Old Armor Beer Company and they also hope to be open later this year.

Additionally, VIDA is one of the first opportunity zone projects in the United States. The Federal Opportunity Zone designation provides tax benefits to private investors who invest in properties that need to be revitalized.

Farmers Market The Farmers Market is held every Thursday, 4-7 p.m., at the corner of Vance Avenue and Dale Earnhardt Boulevard. The market continues through September.

Progress on Irish Buffalo Creek Greenway continues Construction on the first phase of the Irish Buffalo Creek Greenway is underway and is 2.7 miles long. It will run along a utility easement from Orphanage Road to Rogers Lake Road. The greenway will be ten feet wide and paved. It is expected to be completed later this summer.

The greenway will have three pedestrian bridges. The rustic steel and wood bridges will be installed along the portions of the greenway that cross portions of the creek.

The public will be able to access the greenway at three locations: Oakwood Avenue (across from the Lantern Green and Stonewyck neighborhoods), Vietnam Veterans Park and Rogers Lake Road. Vehicle parking will only be available at Vietnam Veterans Park.

The neighborhoods of Newman Manor and Kellswater Bridge will also be able to easily access the greenway.

The greenway will cost $5.1 million to construct. The City received a federal grant and monies from the developers of Kellswater, which will cover most of the costs.
