This year, City staff worked closely with Kannapolis City Schools to offer Civic Education to every 3rd grader. Students learned about the work City employees do every day to offer services like clean water, police, garbage/recycling, parks & recreation, planning, economic development, budgeting and more.

The Commodores Perform August 11 On August 11, the Grammy Award-winning group, The Commodores, will be here to perform all of their classic hits: Three Times a Lady, Brick House, Sail On, Easy and their biggest hit, Nightshift. Touring the world and entertaining people since 1968, their variety of hits is well known to millions of people.

Fire Station #3 is relocating from Florida Avenue to three acres located at the intersection of Concord Lake Road and Old Earnhardt Road due to the fact that a larger station cannot be constructed on the small lot where it is currently located. The new site is more centrally located, will allow for quicker response times to a larger area of the city and is in a commercial area versus the residential neighborhood where it is now.

Children 18 and under must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. No pets or smoking please. Outside alcohol is not permitted. Food/drinks will be available for purchase, or attendees can bring their own. Lawn chairs are permitted.

With the growth of our city comes the need to be prepared for emergencies. These two stations will allow us to be ready to meet the needs of our residents when they have an emergency situation,” said Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant.

“These two stations will allow our firefighters to have workplaces that are constructed specifically for professional staff who are working 24/7 shifts. The stations will give us the opportunity to have training spaces and other facilities we need to house equipment and trucks each station in the city requires in order to meet the emergency needs of Kannapolis residents,” said Fire Chief Ernie Hiers.

Fire Station #2 was built in 1963. With only 1,838 square feet, it was originally designed as a volunteer fire station with no living quarters for fire personnel and only has one bay to house a single fire truck. The building is 55 years old and has inadequate workspace areas for firefighters to work and train.

Fire Station #3 was built 51 years ago, in 1967, and has 3,200 square feet with two bays. Also originally a volunteer fire department, firefighters are using a mobile structure for their living quarters due to the inadequate space. Additional space is needed for both personnel and equipment.

The City will save money by constructing both stations at the same time. Both stations will have the same design and layout. Each will be 11,000 square feet, accommodate two fire trucks, and have eight bedrooms and four bathrooms. The stations will open in 2019.

Kannapolis Experiencing Residential and Commercial Growth Residential, commercial and industrial growth is gaining significant momentum in the city of Kannapolis. The city is experiencing a tidal wave of development as a result of many factors, including the quality of life for people, the I-85 corridor, proximity to the Charlotte region, a welcoming attitude to companies and more.

“It’s the old adage of throwing a rock in the pond and the ripples begin to expand outward – this is happening in Kannapolis.

As growth happens in the Charlotte region and moves up the I-85 corridor, companies and people look for cities to move to and we are a great place for people to locate,” said Kannapolis City Manager Mike Legg.

“We have a progressive city council and staff who have put the pieces in place to ensure we are able to attract companies like Amazon to our front door.”

Later this year, Amazon will open a 1 million-squarefoot distribution center in Kannapolis. Additional industrial growth includes the Linder Industrial Machinery Company, the Gateway Business Park, spec buildings and more. Each of these facilities will bring hundreds of jobs to the city. Under construction are also a number of mixed-use developments with restaurants, shops,

apartments and single-family homes.

There are approximately 5,000 permits issued for new homes that are built or planned to be built over the next five to ten years. On average, 300 homes are being completed annually, which equates to roughly 1,000 new residents annually.

“We have been busy planning for the post-recession growth we knew would come our way. Since 2007, our tax base has increased from $2.4 billion to $3.8 billion, due to the new growth. This growth in our tax base is allowing us to move forward with the Downtown Revitalization Project and other items such as new fire stations, greenways and more. We are making investments in our infrastructure, not just in the downtown, but in the western part

of the city where much of the growth is now occurring,” Legg continued.

Another significant growth catalyst is the Downtown Revitalization Project, which is now underway. An investment of infrastructure and streetscape improvements, including an urban linear park, will be completed in Spring 2019.

This investment by the City has already attracted two major developers – the Lansing Melbourne Group and Corporate Realty – who will build mixed-use districts in the downtown. Construction on a new sports and entertainment venue, home to the Kannapolis Intimidators, will also begin later this year, which is anticipated to bring more commercial and industrial development.
