Fireplace Maintenance Tips • Remove ash from the firebox once the fire is completely out and the ashes are cold. The ash can be sprinkled on flower beds as a good source of plant nutrients.

• Sweeping the chimney and performing an annual inspection is the most important part of maintaining your fireplace and chimney. Over time, the chimney can become coated with soot and creosote, which are by-products of fires that aren’t burning efficiently. Once the coating builds up enough, it can potentially catch fire.

• Keep combustible materials like carpets, drapes and furniture away from the fireplace when a fire is burning.

• Test the function of your fireplace by lighting a few small pieces of seasoned wood, lit from the top down. If smoke doesn’t exit vertically from the fireplace into the chimney, but enters the room, immediately troubleshoot and correct any problems.

• Make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The Kannapolis Fire Department offers free home installation and education. Call 704-920-4260 for more information.

Kannapolis Public Works Will Host Free Document Shredding and Electronic Recycling Event

n Saturday, February 9, from 9 a.m. until noon, Kannapolis Public Works will host a free document shredding and e-waste recycling event. This event is for Kannapolis residents only and will be held at the Public Works Operation Center at 1401 Bethpage Road.

Electronic waste (e-waste) consisting of computers, computer equipment such as monitors or video display units for a computer system, keyboards, mice, printers, copiers, scanners, print-scanner-fax machines, televisions, VCRs, stereos, DVD and CD players will be collected. These are the common electronic products that can be reused, refurbished or recycled. Document shredding is limited to five file boxes per person.

Please note, the City of Kannapolis does not pick up electronics left on the curb. If you cannot attend this event, residents are encouraged to drop off e-waste Monday through Friday at 1401 Bethpage Road.

Train Station Renovations Completed The City has worked with the N.C. Rail Division to complete several improvements to the Train Station on Main Street.

The N.C. Rail Division gifted the City with grant funds to install awnings, new signage and a beautiful clock.

Each of the pieces is designed to coordinate with the city’s other Wayfinding elements, which can be found throughout Kannapolis. The clock structure also provides for a quick look at the train routes that are serviced at the station.

$17-Million Spec Building Under Construction

Extension of Utilities to Old Beatty Ford Road

A $17-million spec building is nearing completion in Kannapolis. The building is located on Kannapolis Parkway near Stewart-Haas Racing and the intersection of N.C. 73. It is also in close proximity to the new Kannapolis Amazon Distribution Facility.

The City of Kannapolis has signed an interlocal agreement with Rowan County, which would result in the annexation of property and extension of Kannapolis utilities to the Old Beatty Ford Road interchange on I-85.

Triliad Development Inc., a developer from California, is constructing the facility. The building is 300,000 square feet and can be used by one tenant or subdivided for multiple tenants. The building is also being constructed for multiple purposes and would be ideal for distribution or manufacturing.

Kannapolis 101 Graduates Honored

RCCC to Expand its South Campus in Kannapolis

Nineteen people have completed the Resident Session of Kannapolis 101.

Kannapolis 101 is held once a year and focuses on educating residents about the City and its services.

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (RCCC) has purchased 25.31 acres to expand its South Campus location in Kannapolis.

For several years, the college has been pursuing additional property to add to the acreage at South Campus, which is located at Exit 55 off I-85.

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College’s South Campus has also recently undergone several renovations in addition to this expansion project. The South Campus Student Center in Building 3000 was recently renovated in addition to the renovation of the college’s new Spirit Store in Building 1000. Also, a newly installed electric vehicle charging station was recently completed at South Campus, and it is located in the Building 2000 parking lot area.

South Campus currently sits on 23 acres. The new properties, which are located directly across Trinity Church Road, were identified as desirable land in an evaluation of potential growth of the college’s facilities in Cabarrus County.

For eight weeks, participants visit each of the City departments, such as police, fire, planning, public works, etc., and see firsthand how each department meets the needs of residents. The class completes many hands-on exercises to give them an appreciation for the various jobs and functions of City employees.

Louisiana-based Commercial Properties Realty Trust has approached Rowan County and City of Kannapolis officials regarding a large mixed-use development (medical, office, commercial and residential), which would be located on 318 acres of property at the Old Beatty Ford Road interchange on I-85. The proximity of the property to the city (located approximately one mile from the current city limits of Kannapolis) and the topography of the land were two determining factors leading to the arrangement for the City to provide the utilities to this site.

“The extension of water and sewer lines to the interchange would enable the City and southern Rowan County to have another economic development opportunity in this area,” said Kannapolis City Manager Mike Legg. “We view this location as a potential major economic anchor and job creation node in our city and in southern Rowan County. Interstate interchanges are limited in number; and by their very nature, companies and real estate investors are attracted to the vast opportunities they present.”

“This should be very beneficial for all of us – Kannapolis, Rowan County and

our neighbors in Landis and China Grove. This is an opportunity for the municipalities to market the area to potential companies who would bring jobs and economic opportunities to our cities. Having utilities at the site gives us an economic advantage at this location,” said Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant.

“We appreciate the Rowan County Board of Commissioners and our southern Rowan County neighbors working with us to ensure we bring this economic development project to Rowan County.”

As part of the agreement, Rowan County will pay the City of Kannapolis $1 million in cash, forego the remaining debt that exists for the previous purchase of the current Intimidators Stadium and work with the City to provide tax incentives to qualifying companies who would create jobs at this interchange. These commitments are designed to help support the City’s cost of the extension of the utilities.

In return, the City of Kannapolis will extend water and sewer service to the site after annexation of the property is complete. A pending Development Agreement between the City of Kannapolis and Commercial Properties Realty Trust will define timeframes, the financial commitment of the developer, development plans for the property and other details of the project. It is anticipated that the project will result in substantial private investments in southern Rowan County and Kannapolis.
