Master Plan Underway for GEM

W

hen the City purchased downtown properties, it became the property owner of the Gem Theatre. As part of the Downtown Revitalization Plan, the City is looking at opportunities for improvement of the Gem Theatre experience and how to accommodate future growth while preserving the theatre.

The City has hired Clearscapes, an architectural firm experienced with historic theatre projects, to develop a master plan for the Gem Theatre. They are looking at ways to improve circulation and flow, provide handicap-accessible restrooms, and increase the lobby and event space. In addition, there are opportunities to provide access to the second floor space for future office or commercial uses. Clearscapes will continue to look at ways to improve the function of the theatre, while also seeking consideration to put the Gem on the National Register of Historic Places.

Use Our Convenient Online Utility Bill Pay Option Did you know you can pay your utility bill online? In 2016, the City of Kannapolis launched an additional online feature to the ECare portal. The ECare online portal is used by utility customers to access and pay their bill.

Create a holiday tradition with family and friends with a visit to the Celebration of Lights and Winterland Express. We have added more lights and fun for you and your family to enjoy this year.

The Winterland Express train runs every evening through December 30 (closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) from 6-9 p.m. on Sundays through Thursdays, and from 6-10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Ride the train through the Village Park, take a spin on our double-decker carousel, enjoy more than 250,000 Christmas lights, make s’mores and more.

Again, this year, kids of all ages will be able to visit Santa in his studio each night. The park will also feature performances from our very own Kannapolis Singing Bears, who will entertain your family with a Christmas Carol performance.

As part of the master plan, citizens’ input was sought through an online survey.

There was a fantastic response from the public with more than 4,000 people completing the survey. Affordability and the historic character and ambiance were the most frequently mentioned reasons for people to visit the Gem. In addition to movies, respondents are also interested in attending concerts, plays and children’s programming there.

The ECare portal – EData – enables water customers to access information about their water usage. Using EData, customers are able to view the amount of water they use hourly, daily or monthly, and set up to receive notifications if a leak occurs or other important information from the City such as drought restrictions. The information is presented in easy-to-understand graphs and can be accessed online by using your laptop or other mobile devices.

The public will continue to be informed of the master plan process. If you are interested in staying informed or being involved in this project, please visit kannapolisnc.gov/gem.

As an extra layer of security for the EData feature, customers will need to enter their username (which is their account number, excluding the leading zeros, and the dash (-) in the account number {12345-0}) and their ECare password.

It’s easy to sign up for the information. Visit the City’s website – kannapolisnc.gov – and click on the Pay Utilities/ECare button. You must have an ECare account. Once you have an ECare account you sign into ECare (to access/pay your bill) or EData (access water usage information, set water leak alerts, etc.).

Admission to the park and viewing of the lights are free; tickets to ride the train and carousel are $2 per person per ride. Village Park is located at 700 West C Street in Kannapolis.

On various nights local community groups and musicians will perform your favorite Christmas songs. Children will also have an opportunity to create ornaments and engage in the children’s zone.

Fats, oils and grease (FOGs) are the leading cause of sewer blockages due to coagulated grease in pipes, and lead to sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs).

A little prevention goes a long way! Just follow these tips: • Never pour grease down sink drains or into toilets or garbage disposals.

• Pour grease and oil into a covered disposable container and put it in the trash.

• Soak up remaining fats, oils and grease with paper towels and dispose of in your trash.

• Before you wash dishes, scrape meats and food with fat and grease into the trash.

• Put baskets or strainers in sink drains to catch food scraps and other solids, and empty the drain basket or strainer into the trash.

• Only use garbage disposals for fruits, vegetables and organic waste.
