What NOT to Put Down Your Garbage Disposal • Fibrous foods (celery, asparagus, oranges, corn husks, etc.) should never go down the disposal because the stringy fibers can wrap around the blades and damage the disposal.

Garbage disposals are expensive, so taking care of them is important. Do you know what not to put down your disposal? The following items should be thrown into the trash or a compost bin – never placed in the disposal: • Grease and oil will go down the drain, but harden soon after, which clogs the pipes at your house and the pipes in the City’s system resulting in an expensive mess for you and us. • Bones and Fruit Pits: Blades cannot grind bones or fruit pits finely enough to go down the drain. They can get stuck

on the blades and cause damage to the disposal, or they will get stuck in the drain, which will result in clogged pipes.

• Coffee grounds are deceptive. They go down the drain easily, but they can create a sludge, which can create a blockage in your plumbing system. A good way to clean your disposal is by throwing ice down your drain. It will knock off any excess food and help to sharpen your blades for the next disposalsafe item you put down the drain.

iggy with the Piggy 2019 returns bigger and better with the smells and tastes of barbeque and fun for the entire family. Make plans now to join us May 2-5 in downtown Kannapolis. The festival was just named a Top 20 Event by the Southeastern Tourism Society for attracting thousands of people for an exciting and memorable experience. Once again, we will host 60 barbeque competition teams. BBQ teams from across the U.S. will compete in the competition sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Our signature concert Friday night will be multi-platinum recording artist and country music great, Joe Nichols. One of country music’s most praised traditional country artists, his latest album Never Gets Old features his new single, Billy Graham’s Bible, and the title hit, Never Grows Old.

The festival, sponsored by Smithfield, will have more than 100 arts & crafts vendors, concerts, a 5K walk/run, fireworks, and a People’s Choice wings and pork tasting. This year the Kannapolis Firefighters Assistance Foundation will be back, bringing their cooking skills to the festival and selling barbeque to the public. We have also added more barbeque and food vendors so you can fill up on many varieties of festival food.

The popular Zucchini 600 returns. Children can build a racecar out of zucchini and race for prizes. Movies on the Campus, sponsored by 600 Festival Association, will show Wreck-It Ralph 2.

Become a Part of City Government Do you have an interest in serving on a City Board or Commission? The City of Kannapolis is seeking members to serve on the Board of Adjustment, the Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Parks and Recreation Commission. In order to serve you must complete an application and be appointed to the board or commission by the Kannapolis City Council. Most of these boards and commissions participate in the City’s policy decisions by making recommendations to the City Council. You can make a difference by sharing your time and talents and becoming an integral part of our community’s success. Board terms are staggered three-year terms and generally end June 30 of each year; however, applications are accepted on a continual basis and kept on file for consideration in the event a vacancy occurs. Applicants must be 18 years old and a resident of the City of Kannapolis, with the exception of the Extra Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) seats on the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment. Meetings are typically held once a month, in the evening, but each commission varies. Those interested in finding out more about each commission or who want to apply can fill out an application (kannapolisncgov). The City is “Jazzing” Up! The City is jazzing up Sunday afternoons with a new four-week jazz series. From 1-3 p.m. each Sunday, May 5-26, jazz music will fill the air. Concerts are free and will be held in Veterans Park, 118 N. Main Street. Food will be available for sale on-site. Formed in 2013, the Concord-based Brian Burton Trio is focused on bringing jazz to new audiences. They perform a diverse and accessible mix that spans many musical idioms. Even people who “don’t like jazz” can enjoy this nuanced blend. Those who already do will appreciate the amount of stylistic and historical ground covered by the group. The Toni Tupponce Trio is a section of A Sign of the Times, a 22-piece jazz band from Charlotte, dedicated to keeping the legacy of the African Diaspora alive through music, dance and spoken word. A Sign of the Times has been performing since 2002, and Tupponce was voted

“Sexiest Voice in Charlotte” by Charlotte Magazine. Originally from New York, Andre Ferreri is a self-taught guitarist who began playing at the age of nine. Andre started playing jazz, R&B and Top 40 music during his high school years, then continued his studies in music composition and arranging at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Born in Philadelphia but raised in Georgia, classically-trained Dawn Anthony considers herself a Northerner with a Southern heart! Singing everything from classical to jazz, and musical theater to gospel, she thrives on challenging herself to grow as a musician, and making connections with others beyond the words and notes on the page. Buff Dillard Music Quartet is a premier International smooth jazz solo recording artist offering some of the best cool, smooth and inspirational jazz around the globe. They have performed as an opening act for smooth jazz legends such as Boney James, Alex Bugnon, Walter Beasley, Kim Waters, Brian Simpson, Pieces Of A Dream and many more.
