Among the victims was South Carolina state senator Reverend Clementa Pinckney, which attracted national attention to the case, including from President Barack Obama. Roe v. Wade recognized a woman’s right to have an abortion and determined that it was not up to the government but the individual to decide. While many states do still have protections for abortion, the overturning of Roe v. Wade caused many to worry about a regression in the ongoing push for women’s rights.

Some words of wisdom for the Class of 2023 It was a pleasure teaching you, coaching you and sharing life with you these four years. Go forth and make us proud!

We all know your high school experience has been anything but normal. You’ve survived a pandemic, A/B scheduling, standards-based grading, and an aggressive goose. I’m so proud of the resilience and adaptability you’ve shown through it all. If you’ve learned anything through all that chaos, I hope you’ve learned to be kind to others and even kinder to yourself. We’re all fighting unseen battles, so remember that before placing judgment. And finally, don’t define yourself by your grades or future success. Define yourself by the relationships you form.

Seniors: Know when to be funny. Know when to be serious. Know when it’s time to do work. Know when it’s time to put work off for a bit.

Know when someone needs a smile and a hug. Know when someone needs some space.

Know when you know what you know. Try to know when you don’t know what you think that you know. Know when you should give people a chance.

Know when it’s time to give people a warning. Know how to stand your ground. Know when a fight that you’d like to pick isn’t worth it. Lend your hand. Lend advice. Lend your ear. Know these things as you become an adult. Then maybe it’ll be your turn to teach me for a while. Congrats guys. It’s been a great pleasure getting to know you. Go make us proud.

I wish you all the best of luck as you move on to the next step in your life. For those of you whom I was fortunate enough to have taught or coached over the years, thank you for the impact that you have had on my life. I will always want the best for all of you, and I am always willing to help down the road if you ever need anything. I will leave you with one final piece of advice: If you find yourself in a difficult situation at any point in your life, ask yourself what Mr. Cimino would do. Then, do the exact opposite. That will get you far in life.
