K

amloops is the second-largest city in the Interior of British Columbia, home to 92,000 residents.

Accessible by three major B.C. highways, the city is among the warmest in Canada and boasts world-class sporting facilities and recreational experiences.

The city is affordable and visitors and residents can enjoy some inexpensive getaways, such as golfing or skiing from less than $100 per day.

Here are some reasons to enjoy Kamloops:

• Warmest summers: Average temperature of 27.2 C from June to August.

• Most parks: The area is home to 84 parks, which puts it at the top of the list for all of B.C. • Kamloops’ mild, dry four-season climate means visitors can enjoy summer and winter activities.

• The Tournament Capital gets 2,000 hours of sunshine per year and only 270 millimetres of rain.

• The average snowfall is 86 centimetres (33.86 inches) in the city area and up to 559 centimetres (17 feet) at nearby Sun Peaks, Canada’s third-largest ski resort.

• Usually, the city ranks No. 1 in Canada for hottest summers, No. 2 for warmest springs, driest city and most sunny days in warm months, 11th for warmest year-round, 13th for mildest winter and 14th for most sunny days.

Central location

Kamloops is located right in the heart of British Columbia’s Interior and is accessible by train, plane and automobile.

From Kamloops, it is a 3.5-hour drive to Vancouver, six hours to Calgary and eight hours to Edmonton.

Air Canada Jazz, WestJet and Central Mountain Airlines service the city, taking people anywhere from the Coast to Prince George to Calgary — all of which open up the world to travellers. Direct flight to Toronto on Air Canada Rouge will begin in June.

The Rocky Mountaineer Railtour and VIA Rail trains also make stops in the city.

Meetings/conventions

Kamloops is becoming a choice destination for organizations holding major conferences.

The city offers 16 convention facilities, ranging in size from 816 square feet to more than 48,000 square feet.

There are also five major destination resorts in the Kamloops area and 10 other hotels with meeting facilities.

Tournament Capital of Canada

True to its moniker of Canada’s Tournament Capital, visitors and residents can find a tournament every weekend in Kamloops.

Some of the facilities the city has built include a 35,000-square-foot fieldhouse complete with indoor running track, an Olympic-sized hockey rink, championship soccer stadium with 500 seats, a soccer facility for tournaments, 12 baseball diamonds and a 1,500-seat baseball park.

In May, the B.C. Lions will arrive in Kamloops for the ninth year in a row, as they hold training camp at the Tournament Capital Centre/Hillside Stadium.

Visit the Peak of summer fun

F

or a weekend away or a day trip up the mountain, Sun Peaks Resort is as much a summer destination as it is a winter one. It boasts events suited for everyone — from sports to crafts.

Lift-accessed biking and hiking connects guests with 2,000 vertical feet of mountain-bike trails and a network of alpine hiking trails.

The resort offers a unique B.C. golf experience, with the greens located 1,200 metres above sea level — the highest elevation course in the province.

The resort has myriad events planned for the summer: JUNE 9 / 10: Skate Sun Peaks, in which downhill boarders navigate 17 corners.

JUNE 16: The annual 5K Foam Fest obstacle challenge returns.

JUNE 22: hiking and biking opening weekend.

JUNE 22-24: The Mountain Spirit Festival, featuring yoga and other wellness activities.

JULY 28: Art lovers should head up for the inaugural Rotary Club Sun Peaks Art Summit.

JULY 28: The Reach the Peak Tod Mountain Summit Hike, led by Nancy Greene Raine JULY 28 / 29: Alpine Blossom Festival

AUG. 10-12: The ninth annual Retro Concert Weekend will hit the stage, featuring live tribute band through the weekend.

AUG. 18: Brings Canada’s game and Camaros, with the Sun Peaks Ball Hockey Tournament and the West Coast Camaro Rally Show and Shine set for that day.

EVERY SUNDAY: The farmers’ market takes place every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. beginning on June 17.

Local famers, ranchers and artisans will be in the village selling fruits, veggies, local meats, crafts and more.

Hitting the Road

K

amloops is home to breathtaking hoodoos, crisp flowing river water and a skyline that will take all your senses on a ride.

There’s no better way to experience the true landscape in and around Kamloops than seated on a motorcycle this season.

Riding in and around Kamloops can be enjoyed from May through October and embraces all of the vibrant colours each season.

The Kamloops area is known for some of the best riding routes in the province — quiet, well-maintained highway corridors with plentiful rest areas and scenic viewscapes.

Whether you tour on a motorbike or in a vehicle, Tourism Kamloops compiled these top routes starting and ending in Kamloops, guaranteed to showcase the best of the area:

Pursuit of the Gold Rush

A 513-kilometre route with lots of twisty mountain roads, great stopping points and incredible vistas along part of the original Gold Rush Trail.

This route will take approximately six-and-a-half hours circling from Kamloops through to 100 mile Mile, Cache Creek, Merritt and back to the city centre.

Thompson Shuswap Expedition

A 270-kilometre trek featuring gently winding roads with views of pristine rivers and lakes, plus stops for the worldrenowned Armstrong cheese.

This journey is approximately three hours and 30 minutes travelling from Kamloops through the communities of Westwold, Armstrong and Salmon Arm, looping back to Kamloops.

Centre of the Universe Loop

Just under 200 kilometres of long stretches of canyoncarving roads and opportunities to explore the Balancing Rock, Deadman Falls and the Centre of the Universe.

This four-and-a-half-hour route is one of Tourism Kamloops’ dual sport routes and is also perfect for 4x4 vehicles.

Explorers will head out from Kamloops to Criss Creek, on to Vidette and back home with plenty of awesome memories.

Hot Springs Adventure

For a longer weekend trip, try this 629-kilometre riding route looping through Vernon, Nakusp, Revelstoke and back through Salmon Arm to Kamloops.

The route totals nine hours and 40 minutes, but take some time to explore the hot spring stops in Nakusp and at Halcyon Hot Springs along the way.

Tell yourself to take a hike

A

s the days grow longer and warmer in Kamloops, so does the desire to get out and enjoy the spring weather.

Whether you are visiting Kamloops and have a free afternoon or are a resident with a week-long staycation planned, there are a number of trails that dry out quickly in the spring sunshine. They range in difficulty and offer gorgeous views of the city.

Below are Hike Kamloops’ top five spring hiking trails, as compiled

McArthur Island

Located off MacKenzie Avenue on the North Shore, this loop is spectacular year-round. The trail is paved, flat and wide, which means it’s great for the whole family. It is ideal for bikes, scooters and strollers. McArthur Island does not allow dogs on the property, so check out other dog-friendly hikes if you want to bring your furry friend.

There are two loops from which to choose. The shorter one is 2.3 kilometres and the longer one is 3.1 kilometres. Plan for one to two hours of walking, depending on your pace and chosen loop.

West Highland Park

Located on the former Aberdeen Hills Golf Course property in Aberdeen, this trail offers sweeping views of the city. This trail is wide and paved and great for the whole family, including dogs on leashes. While the trail does have some gentle ups and downs, there are many benches along the way and a covered rest stop with a picnic table. This trail is also well lit at night, making it a great after-work, after-dinner or end-of-day stroll.

The loop is 1.8 kilometres and takes about 30 minutes.

Aviation Way/Rivers Trail

Located near Kamloops Airport, this section of the Rivers Trail is popular with dog owners as it is also an off-leash dog area.

The flat, packed gravel trail follows the berm along the river and down past the airport. Rivers Trail is extensive, which means you can make this hike as long or as short as you wish. In the spring and fall when the water is low, you can also take your dog out onto the sandbars and let them run around as much as they like. This trail is very popular for dog lovers, so be prepared for numerous canine greetings.

Mara Loop Trail

Located out past Kamloops Airport, the Mara Loop is stunning in the spring. This single-track trail winds through fragrant sagebrush and offers beautiful panoramic views of Kamloops Lake. While you’re more than welcome to bring your dog on this trail, please keep in mind that cacti thrive in the area and there have been rattlesnake sightings. This trail is great for those looking for a longer, more challenging spring hike, while the higher-elevation trails take time to thaw and dry.

This loop is about 4.3 kilometres and takes about 1.5 hours to enjoy.

Oak Hills Trail/Rivers Trail

Located in Westsyde neighbourhood, the Oak Hills section of Rivers Trail is also flat, packed gravel and follows the dyke along the river. Similar to the Aviation Way trail, the Oak Hills trail continues endlessly as part of the larger trail network, which means you can make your hike as long or as short as you’d like. This trail offers sweeping views up the North Thompson Valley, often right from the water’s edge. Parking for this trail is at Westsyde Centennial Park, which is a great area for the whole family and offers a number of recreational opportunities, including a petting zoo for the kids.

This trail is about 3.25 kilometres and takes about an hour to complete.

The Shuswap spirit may also be discovered in its outstanding wineries.

The region’s cool climate wines are produced by six wineries that can compete on par with Canadian

and International wines. The area’s wines include outstanding Gewürztraminers, Merlots, Ortegas, Reislings, and Siegerrebes, just to name a few, which have all won national awards. These wineries are all family run businesses that produce distinctive cool climate wines. A tour of the wineries is a must, you’ll be tastefully surprised!

ibfest returns this summer for a seventh delectable visit.

Meat lovers will flock to Riverside Park from Aug. 10 to Aug. 12 to enjoy succulent ribs, a vibrant beer garden, live entertainment and more, daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

There will also be a Family Fun Zone sponsored by SaveOn Foods, which features an assortment of bouncy castles, live family entertainment, face painting and kids’ games.

Since 2012, Ribfest has become a signature family event in Kamloops, raising more than $600,000 for charities.

Last summer, as smoke from wildfires competed with smoke from the champion ribbers, about 60,000 people attended Ribfest. The Daybreak Rotary Club, which organizes the immensely popular event, expects between 80,000 and 100,000 rib fans to converge on the park this summer if the sun is out and wildfire smoke is held at bay.

Out-of-town teams will compete for the title, as well as for best sauce. Attendees can vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Vegetarians can enjoy corn on the cob and salad options.

Meanwhile, the venerable Hot Nite in the City Show and Shine will again be held alongside Ribfest.

Classic vehicles will dominate downtown streets on Aug. 11, with a poker run the night before and a Ribs and Rods display the day after at Ribfest in Riverside Park.

Hot Nite routinely attracts upwards of 500 classic cars from Washington state, B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Hot Nite’s feature Saturday show and shine will feature live music as Victoria Street is blocked off to allow car lovers to wander through the maze of stunning vehicles.

ourism Kamloops says a growing tourism industry is having a significant impact on the economy with little cost to taxpayers.

“It’s one of those things the community doesn’t have to pay for,” Tourism Kamloops CEO Beverley DeSantis said, noting tourism promotions are funded through accommodation taxes charged to visitors.

A study conducted by Thompson Rivers University professor Peter Larose, who offers tourism consultation services via his company, Larose Research and Strategy, shows that in 2017, the city welcomed about 1.8-million visitors, with an estimated economic spinoff of $449 million.

That reflects a nine per cent increase in visitors compared data from a similar study in 2015.

“Kelowna welcomed 1.9-million visitors [in 2017],” DeSantis said. “We welcomed 1.8.”

DeSantis touted Tourism Kamloops’ Boldly Unscripted rebranding and the strength of the Tournament Capital moniker as reasons for the increase.

Tourism Kamloops has been targeting short-stay residents in Alberta and the northwestern United States, such as Oregon, Washington and California.

Internationally, the city has been working to attract visitors from Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand — people seeking outdoor and Indigenous tourism who are also willing to get behind the wheel for a road trip.

Efforts have also been made to shift marketing outside of peak times.

“We’ve concentrated a lot on key target areas,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis, who became Tourism Kamloops CEO in April 2016, said travellers spend about $140 per night. By comparison, friends and relatives who visit locals spend about $70 per night.

She would like to see business travel grow, with those visitors spending nearly double that of the average traveller, at about $240 per night.

“I always feel there’s a huge advantage to have the conversation to attract more business to Kamloops,” she said.

DeSantis said 2018 is also looking positive for tourism, with large events earlier in the year (Rogers Hometown Hockey and BC Winter Games) setting the pace and direct flights to and from Toronto beginning in June.

As for challenges, DeSantis said other destinations in B.C. are ramping up tourism efforts.

“We’re seeing more and more competition,” DeSantis said. “You only have to look as far as Revelstoke.”

Long-term strategies are centred around partnerships: working with Thompson Rivers University to support students graduating out of tourism programs, with Venture Kamloops to attract tourism business and with local business improvement associations to build robust gathering areas.

“One thing we have that nobody else has is the recreation and sporting facilities,” DeSantis said. “That’s something the city has done exceptionally well.”

he Big Little Science Centre has had many locations, but it has always been home to fans of fascinating facts and experiments.

The interactive centre at 655 Holt St. in Brocklehurst was created in 2000 by award-winning educator Gordon Gore.

Starting from the back of a car, the Big Little Science Centre has been resilient, progressing to one room in a school, to a few more rooms in another school, increasing in size during several moves.

Today, the Centre operates out of four classrooms and the gym at the former Happyvale elementary.

The current program format allows visitors a period of time to experiment on their own at any of 140-plus hands-on stations in the gym. The four other rooms are used for demonstrations and as teaching laboratories.

Open for public visits year-round, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., science fun includes the exhibits, regular shows and events, birthday parties, summer camps, robotics programs and clubs.

Special events every Saturday throughout the summer have included flight and kite day, labs on pond creatures and static-electricity shows.

The Big Little Science Centre also has a speaker series that runs throughout the year.

A great place for hours of entertainment and learning, the Big Little Science Centre has something for everyone.

Adults have as much fun exploring and experimenting as the children. With ever-changing science adventure, the shows and activities bring families back again and again.

But fun science doesn’t have to happen only at Big Little Science Centre. The centre’s website (blscs.org) has links to many fun science sites.

As well, past issues of BIGScience — the centre’s newsletter, filled with science articles and activities to discover — are online.

Powwow T

he Kamloopa Powwow has grown into one of the largest celebrations of First Nations culture in Western Canada.

It represents many years of stories and events of Aboriginal culture and is recognized as one of the best and most well-run powwows of its kind.

The powwow is celebrated over three days at the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc Powwow Grounds alongside the South Thompson River, running this year from Aug. 3 to Aug. 5.

The powwow is a big deal — attracting about 1,000 dancers and many more spectators from across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Washington state and Idaho.

At the first powwow in 1979, there was one drum and perhaps 20 dancers. Today, the powwow plays host to about 20 drums and countless dancers, while organizers award more than $77,000 in prize payouts.

Dance categories include traditional, chicken, jingle, grass, fancy feather and fancy shawl for adult, teen and junior. In addition to the regular dances, there is a selection of specials, which are hosted by families.

Chief and council host specials each year, which signifies council recognizing visitors.

Miss Kamloopa also hosts a special event every year.

A grand entry takes place every day — at 7 p.m. on the opening night and at noon on Saturday and Sunday.

The Kamloopa Powwow welcomes non-First Nations people to partake, learn and enjoy. The powwow is known for its special competition that invites nonAboriginal people to try the traditional dances. The event also features First Nations arts and crafts booths.

Get wild at the world-famous park

T

he B.C. Wildlife Park in Kamloops connects people to the province’s wildlife, encouraging a sustainable society within a healthy natural environment.

Its motto is “Conservation through Education.”

The park has more than 40 species, including canines, big cats, reptiles and amphibians, bears, birds of prey, small mammals, arachnids and more.

Clover the Kermode Bear acts as an ambassador for his species. He arrived in 2012 after being unsuccessful with a rehabilitation and release program. He is believed to be the only one of his kind in professional human care anywhere in the world. The habitat is at the south end of the park and is 2.7 acres in size. Clover, also known as a Spirit Bear, is an attraction for residents of Kamloops and tourists from around the world alike.

The Park’s Fawcett Family Wildlife Health Centre works closely with the Ministry of Environment and community partners to provide rehabilitation services to injured and orphaned wildlife in the region. Once those wildlife are successfully rehabilitated, they are released back into the wild.

During the summer, see the bird of prey flight demonstration at the Highland Valley Copper Amphitheatre

or ride more than a kilometre of track on the Wildlife Express miniature train.

Learn more about the animals at the B.C. Wildlife Park during guided tours with a park interpreter. Private animal encounters introduce visitors to either a turtle, bird of prey, snake or bearded dragon.

The is a plethora of activities at the park through the year, including the following, all of which feature the iconic Uncle Chris the Clown: • Aug. 6: BC Bears’ Day and Teddy Bear Picnic; • Oct. 26 to Oct. 28: Boo at the Zoo; • Dec. 14 to Jan. 6: 21st annual Wildlights Festival.

The park is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Oct. 8 and from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Oct. 9 to the end of the year.

Art and music make for a vibrant downtown

owntown Kamloops has an assortment of events to entertain locals and visitors alike.

The focus is all about publicspace programming and encouraging downtown businesses to bring themselves outside by doing live demonstrations, hosting classes and bringing any number of interactive activities to the streets of the downtown core.

For those seeking music, there are myriad places to regularly hear some of the best local performers, as well as those travelling through the city.

Venues include the Blue Grotto, Commodore Grand Cafe and Lounge, Turner’s Music Studio, the Art We Are, Plaza Heritage Hotel and and The Grind.

Downtown is bookended by two major art venues — Kamloops Art Gallery at the east end and the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre at the west end. In between is an eclectic mix of new and venerable galleries.

Hat Creek Ranch

H

at Creek Ranch near Ashcroft was an 1860s roadhouse that catered to miners, pack-train operators, stagecoaches and wagon trains right up until 1916, when the automobile was first introduced to the region.

The event that inspired founder Donald McLean to build the ranch was the Cariboo Gold Rush — the most famous of the gold rushes in British Columbia.

It was the creation of the Cariboo Road (also called the Cariboo Wagon Road, the Great North Road or the Queen’s Highway) that gave birth to such roadhouses as Hat Creek Ranch. The project, initiated in 1860 by James Douglas,

the colonial governor of British Columbia, was a feat of engineering stretching from Fort Yale to Barkerville through the extremely hazardous canyon territory in the B.C. Interior.

It replaced the dangerous mule trail, a rough-hewn cliffside trail wide enough only for one mule.

Today, Hat Creek Ranch showcases what life was like in the 1860s. Interpreters in period costume, original buildings, the historic roadhouse, a stagecoach ride, guided tours and even gold panning add to the experience.

Historic Hat Creek Ranch is located just a short drive from Ashcroft.
