Now that Terry Lake has declined to seek a third term in office, the B.C. Liberals will be running a new candidate in Kamloops-North Thompson in the 2017 election. Two names that have been bandied about for months are Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar and Steven Puhallo, executive director of the North Shore Business Improvement Association and B.C. Liberal Kamloops-North Thompson riding association president.

Both told KTW they have not yet made a decision.

As expected, Terry Lake will not seek a third term as MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson in the May 2017 provincial election.

The health minister said yesterday morning he’s ready to pursue opportunities outside of provincial politics.

“At the end of the day, I’m a person who thrives on change and, after this length of time and this intensity, I just felt like I needed a new era in my life and a new challenge and that’s what it came down to,” he said.

Lake said the three-and-a-half years he has spent on the province’s health file have been some of the busiest of his political career.

“It’s a very busy file, it’s intense, it’s emotional, it’s one that there’s so many things that can happen each and every single day,” he said.

“But it’s also one where you get to make meaningful change — although I must say in health care, meaningful change takes more time than it does in some other areas of government because it’s so big and so institutionalized.”

While he spoke with Premier Christy Clark about potentially changing ministries if he returned to Victoria next year, Lake said leaving provincial politics ultimately won out

Lake was elected in 2009 and again in 2013 and previously served as B.C.’s environment minister. He was also in charge of the ranching and sled-dog task forces in 2009 and 2010.

Before entering provincial politics, he served as mayor of Kamloops and taught animal-health technology at Thompson Rivers University.

Lake said he has not decided if he will return to the university when his term comes to an end next spring.

“It’s a great institution, but we’ll see, we’ll see what’s out there,” he said.

For his eight years as MLA, Lake, 60, will be eligible, at age 65, for a Year 1 pension payout of $42,364 and a lifetime total of $732,623 to age 80.

With Lake out of the race, Kamloops’ current mayor said he will have to “seriously consider” whether he wants to try to make his own jump from city hall to the legislature.

“It’s something that has intrigued me in the past, but timing with family or business or other projects I wanted to do, it’s made me not take the jump either provincially or federally,” said Mayor Peter Milobar.

Milobar said he wants to make a decision on whether to seek the BC Liberal Kamloops-North Thompson nomination as quickly as possible to avoid uncertainty for the city.

While he said he is interested in the job, Milobar added he will need to weigh it against his mayoral duties.

“There’s still lots of projects I’m enjoying working on as mayor and things I want to see move forward for the city as well, so I have to put that into the decision making as well.”

Kamloops-North Thompson riding association president Steven Puhallo has also been rumoured to be interested in the Liberal nomination.

Contacted by KTW, Puhallo, who is also executive director of the North Shore Business Improvement Association, would not confirm whether he wants to run in 2017.

“That’s a decision you talk about with your friends, family, especially my wife and children,” he said.

“Those are they types of considerations you would take into account, but today is really about celebrating a guy who has left an incredible legacy, not just for Kamloops, but the entire province.”

Clark and NDP Leader John Horgan have asked MLAs to confirm by the end of the summer as they prepare for the May 9, 2017, election.

As the other half of T and T, as we are known in the area, it was a real pleasure to work with someone who has served with integrity from Day 1 . . . Most people in Kamloops have no idea or care where the borders are in the two ridings. They want to see us working together, a working partnership for Kamloops and the North Thompson . . . Terry was certainly a strong voice at the cabinet table who would sometimes take a different position from the others and, often when he did that, he carried the day. He definitely punched at or above his weight class at the cabinet table and I think the results are obvious in the clinicalservices building at RIH, at the work done at TRU, in transportation.

or more than 4,000 years, Secwepemctsin speakers passed down an epic tale of a group of brothers who traversed their territory, naming places they found and preparing the land for future generations.

Now, a team from Simon Fraser University is hoping the story, along with some new technology, can help save the language which once preserved it.

The team’s app, Secwepemc Story, will introduce readers to the tale of Tlli7sa and his brothers in both English and Secwepemctsin, the language of the Shuswap Nation.

The program, set to launch next week, will also feature full-colour illustrations, audio recordings, language lessons and glossaries.

To create the app, SFU First Nations Language Centre director Marianne Ignace went back to notes made in the region in the early 1900s by ethnographer James Teit.

While Teit didn’t set down the stories he was told by Secwepemc elders in their original language, and thought the project predated most voice recording technology, Ignace said Teit’s work was extremely detailed.

“So there’s this wealth of really interesting oral traditions that have philosophical, educational, environmental messages that in a way also represent history that

goes back thousands of years,” she said.

“But, for future generations we didn’t have them available in the language.”

Ignace set out to re-translate the stories, working with other Secwepemctsin speakers to find words that would not only be grammatically correct, but also bring some poetry to the tale.

Tlli7sa’s story, split into 18 parts for the app, features a number of familiar locations, from Shuswap and Kamloops lakes to Cache Creek and the High Bar Canyon on the Fraser River, where the brothers are eventually transformed into stone pillars, still visible to this day.

Along the way, the brothers vanquish what Ignace refers to as “people-eating powers” — making the places they visit safe for those who follow.

The interactive storybook is the first of a number of indigenous language apps the Simon Fraser University centre hopes to roll out this fall.

While the Tlli7sa app takes a cultural focus, many of the other programs are languagelearning courses, featuring quizzes, vocabulary and grammar lessons and conversational practices.

Ignace said the language centre drew on work from another SFU department, which had spent millions developing a cutting-edge way to teach the Greek language.

This knowledge, passed down to the next generations orally, contained the teachings necessary for maintenance of Secwepemc culture and identity.

Secwepemctsin (language of the Secwepemc) is one of the Interior Salish languages of the large Salishan language family.

While the language centre has a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council to work with 12 languages in particular, Ignace said none of B.C.’s 32 indigenous languages are in great health.

In the case of Secwepemctsin, Ignace said there are about 100 fluent speakers who grew up using the language at home.

Most are 60 or older.

Though she and her husband were able to pass the language to their children, Ignace said that experience has become less common.

“Many parents aren’t able to do that because the parents’ generation, or even younger grandparents these days, were denied the opportunity to learn their language,” she said.

“In fact, many of them had it literally beaten out of them in the residential school system.”

Preserving First Nations languages isn’t just about individual words, Igance said. It’s also about ways of thinking that are’t necessarily captured by the English language.

“Secwepemctsin, for example, has just this amazing wealth of knowledge about the land and social relations, about connections with the whole universe that are expressed in the language,” she said.

“And it has poetry of how to talk about one another in really good and unique ways. If we lose our language, those ways of viewing the world and the land and one another are lost.”

The Secwepemctsin sound system consists of 43 consonants and 5 vowels.

Many of these sounds are not found in the English language and are difficult to learn.

The present writing system for Secwepemctsin was developed by a Dutch linguist (Kuipers) approximately 30 years ago.

Until that time,

Secwepemctsin remained an oral language.

The Kuipers system of writing Secwpemctsin is inaccurate because the vowel sounds do not represent the Secwepemc sounds.

The international alphabet system much more accurately represents the Secwepemc sounds.

One time, Michael Zaitlin piled his university textbooks together and put his television on top of them.

“There, I’ve got a $2,000 TV stand,” the Thompson Rivers University student said as he discussed the students’ union’s open-textbook campaign.

Zaitlin, a history, economics and political-science student, is also the union’s student caucus chair and official spokesman of the campaign that began on Aug. 30.

The goal is to see more faculty using textbooks licensed under an open copyright, which would let users share them and adapt their content.

The books are all peer- and faculty-reviewed.

The provincial government created the open textbook program in 2012, describing its goal as making higher education more accessible by reducing the cost of textbooks students had to buy.

The project was tasked with creating a collection of open textbooks linked to the 40 highestenrolled subject areas in the province.

In 2014, the province added another 20 textbooks that supported trades, technology and skills training; the total available is now more than 150.

The program is managed by BCcampus, a provincial agency.

Zaitlin said 25 TRU classes use open textbooks, which means more than 900 students are saving a total books cost of more than $108,000.

The student union said textbook prices have risen 82 per cent between 2003 and 2013 and represent nearly one-third of education costs for domestic students.

The students’ union will also be promoting creation of a TRU Open Textbook Fellowship to support faculty who create new or adapted open textbooks.

“We are calling on individual professors to leverage their textbook choice to provide students much needed savings and to tailor materials to the curriculum,” Zaitlin said.

“And we are also looking to the university to take a leadership role that reflects our unique mandate for open education.”

A man who asked Kamloops Mounties to shoot him while swinging a wooden staff at them during a confrontation on a downtown street is out of jail.

Travis Bespoyasny pleaded guilty in Kamloops provincial court to one count each of causing a disturbance and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Court heard a police officer leaving the Kamloops RCMP’s Battle Street detachment on June 10 heard a commotion coming from the corner of Sixth Avenue and Seymour Street. When he took a look, he saw a man swinging a wooden staff and yelling religious phrases. The Mountie called for backup and more officers arrived at the scene.

That’s when the man, later identified as Bespoyasny, turned his attention toward police.

“He began telling the officers to shoot him,”

Crown prosecutor Oliver Potestio said. “He continued swinging the staff in the direction of the officers.”

Bespoyasny was Tasered and arrested. He has been in custody since the incident.

The 46-year-old told court he wants to move back to the Lower Mainland, where he has better supports in place to deal with his mental-health and substance-abuse issues.

“It seems when I don’t take care of myself, then my mental-health issues become a factor in my being arrested,” Bespoyasny said. “Now I’ve had time to rest, take my meds.”

Kamloops provincial court Judge Chris Cleaveley gave Bespoyasny credit for the time spent in jail since his arrest and released him on time served.

“It’s a bit of a shame,” the judge said. “You’ve missed most of the summer. But, now that you’ve had a chance to think about it, make sure when you get back to Surrey you stay on an even keel.”

Police yesterday arrested David Albert Miller, 54, in Ontario. He has been charged with second-degree murder and will be transported to Kamloops. The victim and accused are from Abbotsford.

A 54-year-old Abbotsford man charged with seconddegree murder in connection to the death of a woman whose body was found last week at a Kamloops motel is expected to make his first court appearance next week.

David Albert Miller was charged yesterday as he was arrested by members of the Kamloops RCMP’s seriouscrime unit in Napanee, Ont. He is accused of killing 52-year-old Debra Novacluse, whose body was discovered on Aug. 27 at the Super 8 motel on Hugh Allan Drive in Aberdeen.

Police were called to the motel at about 11:30 a.m. after the body was discovered.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Kamloops RCMP Supt.

Brad Mueller would not say how or where it was found, or by whom.

Mueller said investigators tracked Miller as he left Kamloops and travelled to Ontario.

He would not say whether Miller was still in Kamloops when Novacluse’s body was found.

“This was a very dynamic and time-sensitive investigation,” Mueller said, noting Miller and Novacluse were involved in “some

form of a relationship.”

“Based on our investigation, we know this was a targeted attack,” Mueller said.

Both Miller and Novacluse are from Abbotsford.

Mueller said Miller had been in Kamloops for a period of days before Novacluse’s body was found, noting Miller frequented the city, but had little interaction with local Mounties. Miller has a lengthy criminal record, including convictions for fraud and violent offences.

He is in the process of being transported to Kamloops from Ontario and a date for his first court appearance has not yet been set.

‘Footsie’ fury lands man in jail A Kamloops man who trashed his girlfriend’s house after accusing her of “playing footsie” with another person has been sentenced to five days in jail.

Travis Lesage pleaded guilty this week to one count each of mischief, failure to appear and being unlawfully at large.

Court heard the 26-year-old let himself in to his girlfriend’s Jasper Avenue home in North Kamloops on April 23, 2015. When she got home a few hours later, he became accusatory.

“Mr. Lesage was asking why she was playing footsie with someone earlier in the night and accused her of being bisexual,” Crown prosecutor Oliver Potestio

said. “He then began being rude to her.”

Court heard Lesage lashed out when he was asked to leave, kicking over framed photos and breaking a window.

Lesage’s failure to appear charge came after he missed a court date this past spring. He was charged with being unlawfully at large after failing to show up for a weekend jail term in December.

The five-day jail sentence covers the time he had left on his weekend sentence, which was for driving while prohibited.

He was also placed on a term of probation with an order barring him from contacting his ex-girlfriend and her mother.

HOT: The political scene in Kamloops, upended as it has been by Health Minister and Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake’s announcement yesterday that he will not be seeking a third term for the B.C. Liberals.

Lake’s decision was expected since the spring, when he declined to commit to another run, saying he wanted to spend the summer talking with family.

Though not a surprise, Lake’s decision has served up a delicious buffet for political junkies as tongues wag with predictions of who will seek the Liberal nomination north of the river.

The fact Mayor Peter Milobar is considering a run creates a domino effect. If he decides to seek the nomination and is successful, it opens up a byelection battle at city hall.

The provincial election is set for May 9, 2017, but the campaign has already started.

NOT: The continued crisis associated with overdose deaths in Kamloops and across British Columbia.

On International Overdose Awareness Day, which was Wednesday, the Interior Health Authority issued an overdose alert after five reported overdoses — including one fatality — in 48 hours.

The health authority noted each of the overdoses appeared to be connected to a sparkly white powder officials believe is being sold by drug dealers as cocaine.

The alert pointed out drug abstinence is the safest way to avoid overdoses, but offered several tips for drug users, including not mixing drugs, not using drugs alone and not experimenting with higher doses.

The crisis seems to have no end as tragedies pile up.

Entering the Anthropocene

G

eology moves very slowly, and so do geologists.

The Working Group on the Anthropocene was set up in 2009, but only presented its recommendation to the International Geological Congress in Cape Town this week.

The Working Group’s experts have concluded we are now living in a new geological epoch: the Anthropocene. That is, the epoch when human beings are reshaping the Earth.

Epochs (e.g. the Triassic, the Jurassic or the Cretaceous) are usually big chunks of time: tens of millions of years. The Anthropocene, by contrast, is only about 65 years old, which is why many geologists are reluctant to accept it as a whole new epoch in the Earth’s history.

But they probably will, in the end, because the evidence is already there in the rocks.

The radical idea of defining an entire epoch by the impact of human civilization on the planet was advanced for the first time in 2000 by Nobel Prize-winning scientist Paul Crutzen. Modern human beings have been around for 200,000 years, he pointed out, but only in 1950 did our numbers and and the products of our science and industry grow so great that we became a dominant factor in the planet’s evolution.

Now we make the weather (by causing global warming with our greenhouse-gas emissions). We are even melting the ice and raising the sea level. We and our domesticated animals account for more than 90 per cent of the total weight of all large land-dwelling animals (bigger than a chicken) on Earth.

VIEWS plants off most of the fertile land on the planet. And, if there are any geologists around a hundredmillion years from now, they will be able to detect our existence by examining the rocks.

The acid test for defining a geological epoch is: are there clear differences in the make-up of the rocks? With us, it’s easy. In the 1950s, radioactive elements (radionuclides) from hundreds of openair nuclear bomb tests appear in the sediments all around the world.

The real goal of those who want to declare a new Anthropocene epoch, however, is not just to tidy up the geological record. They want to highlight the fact that, for better or worse, we are now in charge of the entire planet.

Crutzen didn’t just propose a new epoch called the Anthropocene. In 2006, he was also the first scientist to go public and say we may have to resort to “geoengineering.”

We are disabling the Earth’s natural mechanisms for maintaining a stable environment, he said.

In order to survive, we may have to take responsibility for maintaining all the global cycles and balances ourselves.

That is not a good thing. In fact, it is a terrifying thing because the Earth system is immensely complex and there are large parts of it that we do not even understand yet. It was another scientist, Jim Lovelock, who first pointed out what a huge and ultimately crushing burden we will have to shoulder.

Lovelock’s great insight, as important as Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution in the 19th century, was that the Earth’s living things, its atmosphere, its seas and its rocks are all part of a single interacting system. He boldly called it Gaia, but more timid scientists call it Earth system science. And in the very act of recognizing it, he realized that it was breaking down.

Writing in 1979, he warned that if we disable Gaia’s natural functions, we will wake up to find that we have inherited “the permanent lifelong job of planetary maintenance engineer. Gaia would have retreated into the muds and the ceaseless intricate task of keeping all the global cycles in balance would be ours.”

In 1979, he wrote: “We can guess that at less than [10-billion people], we should still be in a Gaian world. But somewhere beyond this figure . . . lies the final choice of permanent enslavement on the prison hulk of the spaceship Earth, or gigadeath to enable the survivors to restore a Gaian world.”

So far, we are only 7.5-billion people, but that’s no consolation.

The world’s per capita energy consumption is so much higher than Lovelock foresaw in 1979 that we may be on the brink of that final desperate “choice” already. (And UN figures predict we will be at 10 billion by 2050 in any case). gwynnedyer.com

LET’S TEST NEW SYSTEM Editor: Re: KTW, Aug. 12 (“McLeod: Liberals trying to ‘rig process”): My concern about a vote for a referendum is under current practice and laws, the referendum would be intended to fail.

Remember how the referenda in 2005 and 2006 were conducted?

The Kamloops Daily News listed the deficiencies of first past the post as low voter turnout, wasted votes and outcomes which do not match the popular vote. Proponents of a referendum still need to offer a solution to these deficiencies.

Where is the story about County X, detailing some disastrous outcomes to scare us away from a preferential system?

Martin Patriquin suggested we have a referendum after we use the new electoral system once.

When we buy a house, we are allowed to thoroughly check the house. When we buy a car, we take it for a test drive. When we choose a voting system, let us have a test vote, then let us have a referendum.

In this effort for a referendum, it is distressing there is no concern for democracy and for what is good for the country and for the people (voters).

Public artist Bill Frymire’s latest work is just a bunch of trash.

It’s total garbage — and that’s the beauty of it, says the mural’s subject, seven-foot Boston Celtics’ forward Kelly Olynyk.

“There’s zero per cent chance I could do this,” Olynyk said with a laugh yesterday at the outdoor basketball court next to the Thompson Rivers University Gym, where Frymire’s mosaic hangs on a chain-link fence in thousands of bits and pieces.

“If I did it, it would look like I put a bunch of garbage on the fence, which he did and made it into a masterpiece, which shows the talent some people have is just different.”

Frymire was given $5,000 from the TRU Sustainability Grant Fund and $600 from the City of Kamloops’ B.C. Festival of the Arts Legacy Fund, which he earmarked for a project at the bike shelter on campus.

That plan was scrapped when the shelter was scheduled for demolition.

Jim Gudjonson, TRU’s director of environment and sustainability, suggested a mural of the local hardcourt hero.

Frymire hatched a plan and went to work, collecting about 2,500 pieces of vinyl siding destined for a landfill and contacting the Celtics’ public-relations department for a picture of Olynyk.

He recreated a small grid on a much-larger scale on the fence, placing the pieces — each shard of vinyl punched with three holes pierced by aluminum rings — to recreate a giant picture of the big man’s mug.

“I’ve seen a lot of art that uses trash and it just looks like trash,” said Frymire, who has used bottle caps, matchbox collections and marbles in past work.

“I wanted to have something that was a little more aesthetically pleasing.”

The project took Frymire about 140 hours to complete — a futile few of them spent battling through a Kamloops windstorm — and cost about $3,500.

“You never dream of a day when you

see your own face in your city,” said Olynyk, who is in town for his sister Jessie’s wedding tomorrow. “He did an unbelievable job.”

Frymire, a Métis artist who prides himself in connecting with the Earth through his work, created a portrait of Terry Fox in view of the running path near the Kamloops Tennis Centre using recycled one-gallon milk jugs.

That was installed about three years ago and is showing its age as the material has eroded in the elements.

The vinyl siding is meant to last outside for about 20 years, but Frymire expects the mural to hold up for about five years.

“I hope it attracts more people out here to play in the evening,” Frymire said.

Olynyk tweeted a picture of the mosaic and it has garnered attention from U.S. media outlets, including ESPN. “People were sending me pictures of it and it’s pretty cool when you get here and see it, the size and magnitude and how well it was put together,” Olynyk said.

Kamloops woman files civil suit against City of Penticton A Kamloops woman who tripped over a tree root in Penticton’s Rotary Park and was injured has launched a civil claim against the South Okanagan city.

Donna Alice Russell said in August of 2014, she was a tourist in Penticton walking across a grassy area in Rotary Park when she tripped and fell as a result of striking a root from a tree growing in the park that “presented an unforeseen hazard.”

In her claim, Russell states the city failed to take care of the grounds to ensure the public is reasonably safe in the park because of exposed roots of trees poking through the grass.

As well, she states the city should have posted warnings that there may be hidden objects in the grass that

could pose a hazard.

Alternatively, she suggests the city could have put barriers around the roots.

As a result, Russell, who is retired, said she suffered a fractured ankle.

In her claim, Russell said she suffered “serious and permanent personal injuries resulting in permanent impairment and disability, pain and suffering and loss of enjoyment of life.”

She was hospitalized and underwent surgery and continues to suffer pain in her ankle.

Russell claims she also suffered financially. Besides the cost of care and rehabilitation, she was also charged ambulance and hospital fees.

The amount she is seeking in damages has not been stated.

A North Thompson man is in hot water after an alleged earlymorning flashing on a Kelowna street.

RCMP Const. Jesse O’Donaghey said the incident took place at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Ethel Street in Kelowna at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

believe a woman pulled her car to the side of the road to use her cellphone and was approached by a 52-year-old man who exposed himself as he walked past the vehicle.

“Police were provided with a detailed description of the suspect, who fled north on Ethel Street,”

O’Donaghey said.

“An officer quickly located an intoxicated man matching the suspect’s description on Fuller Avenue attempting to hide from police.”

The suspect, who is from the North Thompson, was held overnight and released on a promise to appear in court on Nov. 17.

An hours-long standoff at a home in Iron Mask Trailer Park in west Kamloops ended at about 11 a.m. Tuesday with a pair of arrests.

A 46-year-old Kamloops woman was arrested for breach of conditions and a 24-year-old Kamloops man was taken into

custody for obstruction of a police officer.

Two neighbours told KTW the incident began at about 7 a.m. A woman who asked that her name not be published said tactical police officers with large firearms were in the area.

“We were standing right in our front window and nobody said anything,” she said, noting the home where the arrests

were made was not known in the trailer park for causing trouble.

“They were always quiet. I don’t know what it was about.”

Another neighbour said two police vehicles were at the same house on Monday night.

Later Tuesday, Kamloops Mounties explained they were at the Lac Le June Road trailer park in response to a domestic breach of a no-contact order.

Eleven homes have been evacuated and more than 40 are on evacuation alert as wildfire crews battle a blaze south of Lytton.

Fire information officer Rachel Witt told KTW the fire, estimated to be about 500 hectares in size, was first reported on Wednesday morning.

Witt said 44 firefighters, four air tankers and three helicopters are fighting the blaze.

“Right now it is fairly wind-driven,” Witt said.

“It’s in a valley and it has been

reported that wind in the area has been up to 40 km/h.”

As of KTW press deadline, crews had yet to establish any containment on the fire.

An evacuation order put in place by the Thompson-Nicola Regional District spans the area between the CN Rail bridge in Lytton north to the Stein River.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, 80 firefighters are battling the blaze along with five helicopters, five pieces of heavy equipment and two air tankers.

One structure has been destroyed by the fire.

VANCOUVER — Lululemon Athletica Inc. yesterday reported fiscal second-quarter net income of US$53.6 million.

The Vancouver-based company said it had profit of US 39 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for pretax gains, came to US 38 cents per share.

The results matched Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 14 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was also for earnings of US 38 cents per share.

The athletic apparel maker posted revenue of US$514.5 million in the period, beating Street forecasts.

For the current quarter ending in November, Lululemon said it expects revenue in the range of US$535 million to US$545 million.

Lululemon shares have increased 46 per cent since the beginning of the year.

In the final minutes of trading on yesterday, shares hit US$76.66, a climb of 22 per cent in the last 12 months.

With the arrival of September, the BC B.C. News Wildfire Service has begun to ramp down its operations.

Provincial fire information officer Claire Allen said about 35 per cent of support staff and firefighters hired on a seasonal basis will head off to school or other jobs this week and next.

B.C.’s wildfire season officially runs from April 1 to March 31, but Allen says the number of fires usually drops significantly starting this month.

Until noon Wednesday, the wildfire service had responded to 988 wildfires provincewide, 466 of which were caused by people, which is believed to be the case for a fire now burning near Lytton.

Vaping in B.C. now carries same rules and penalties as smoking tobacco So-called e-cigarettes are now under new regulations.

The provincial government said e-cigarettes will be treated the same as tobacco products and subject to the same bans and restrictions.

The Health Ministry said the Tobacco and Vapour Products Control Act aims to protect youth from the unknown effects of vaping and from becoming addicted to nicotine. It came into effect yesterday.

The act prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes to anyone under 19, but it also relaxes some indoor smoking rules to allow adults to test vapour products inside certain stores so they can decide if they want to buy them.

First responders in Delta deal with spate of overdoses within minutes Delta police say they dealt with nine overdoses within 20 minutes early yesterday morning, noting it’s miraculous everyone survived.

Police said they received four reports, almost simultaneously, about overdoses at four different locations.

They said emergency services found nine recreational drug users who thought they were using cocaine, but it’s believed the drugs were laced with fentanyl.

The overdoses came less than a day after Vancouver Coastal Health released data showing the vast majority of street drugs that have been inspected at its supervised injection site, Insite, contain fentanyl.

CALGARY — The divide between detached houses and other segments of Calgary’s depressed real estate market continued to widen last month.

August numbers released Thursday by the Calgary Real Estate Board shows the estimated price for a typical condo in the city was down 0.76 per cent from July to $274,900, with prices now down 7.1 per cent from a year ago.

The price of the typical detached house, as represented by the real estate board’s benchmark price, was up in August by 0.18 per

cent from a month earlier to $503,200, for a 3.3-per-cent fall from a year ago.

Inventories for condos have also climbed to near record highs for August, at close to six months of supply. Meanwhile, detached homes, which make up close to two-thirds of all sales, have under three months of supply.

A drop in condo and attached house sales helped drag down total sales from a year ago by 4.57 per cent, while detached houses saw only a 1.41-per-cent decline.

Condo prices are now at levels similar to the end of 2013, while sales in the segment are at their weakest level since 2003.

There has been some speculation that the foreign buyer tax imposed in Vancouver and sky-high prices both there and in Toronto might lead to more interest in Calgary’s realestate market, but realtor Jim Sparrow said that he and the five realtors he works with have seen no sign of an increase.

He said many prospective buyers are waiting until they have more confidence that the price of oil and the economy are recovering.

“They’re like most other buyers right now. They’re very hesitant to jump in the market when they don’t have more confidence,’’ said Sparrow.

OTTAWA — Peter MacKay says he knows he must decide quickly whether he will join the Conservative leadership race.

“Obviously a decision has to be taken soon, because I don’t want to freeze people out, or influence their decisions,’’ said MacKay, a former Conservative cabinet minister from Nova Scotia.

“I suspect that that’s already happening, to some degree, so I’m very aware that a decision has to be taken soon and I’m seriously getting close to making

that decision,’’ he said.

Conservatives say that since MacKay would be a strong contender to replace former prime minister Stephen Harper, some other potential hopefuls — and their would-be campaign organizers and financial donors — are likely waiting to see what he will do.

The Conservatives are to vote for a new leader next May and many believe the race will not really begin to take shape until the caucus gathers for a retreat in Halifax later this month.

MacKay did not reveal his personal timeline for making his choice, but said

“it’s getting close.’’

“If for no other reason, as I said, to give people clarity,’’ said MacKay, who was leader of the federal Progressive Conservative party when it merged with the Canadian Alliance to form the new Conservative party of Canada.

MacKay, now working as a lawyer in Toronto, says he remains concerned about the impact that a leadership bid would have on his family.

Conservative MPs Kellie Leitch, Maxime Bernier, Michael Chong and Tony Clement have formally joined the race.

REDWATER, Alta. — A woman who spent hours clinging to the sides of a well she had fallen into near Edmonton says she honestly thought she was going to die.

Trieva McBeth plunged more than two metres into the grass-covered, abandoned well while she was walking her dog near Redwater on Monday.

McBeth was partially submerged in murky water and for four hours tried to clamber up the well’s sheer sides as she screamed for help, hoping that someone would hear her.

But no one did, and dark storm clouds were starting to gather above her.

She knew she had to get out

before it started to pour.

She eventually managed to pull herself up with a nylon rope she spied tethered to a cement block at the top of the well.

“I couldn’t get a grip with my feet and I’d just slip right back down,’’ she said of her failed attempts to scramble out.

The rope wasn’t much easier.

“It was as tall as my hands could reach,” she said.

“I could never do that in gym. I could never do a pullup.”

McBeth persevered and was able to pull herself to freedom.

She said she hopes the well gets covered up so nobody else gets hurt.

Sturgeon County, where the property is located, said it is trying to contact the landowner.

SUSSEX, N.B. — A New Brunswick man unhappy with a noisy outdoor piano in his local town square took matters into his own hands this week: He screwed the key cover shut.

The weatherized, brightly coloured piano was installed around Canada Day at Leonard’s Gate in Sussex, N.B. Scott Hatcher, the town’s chief administrative officer, had seen a similar piano while vacationing in B.C. and thought one would help Sussex’s downtown revitalization efforts.

“What a great way to pass an hour,’’ Hatcher said yesterday of what he saw on his western vacation. “I’d go out and get a coffee in the morning and just sit there and listen.’’

Hatcher said the Sussex piano

caught on quickly with residents — but that included some who tinkled the ivories after midnight.

“There are two nearby bars,’’ Hatcher noted. “It’s probably people on their way home from the bar who think they’re Mozart or something.’’

The town received two noise complaints, both seemingly from a resident of a nearby apartment. And then on Monday, someone put two long screws into the cover, sealing it shut.

Hatcher said it’s pretty obvious who is to blame. People saw the culprit do it, and he’s discussed it on social media.

“The person who did it isn’t really hiding it,’’ said Hatcher.

Hatcher estimated local artists and a piano tuner put $5,000 worth of time and effort into refurbishing the piano.

The prime minister’s direct remarks came during a week-long official visit to China aimed at forging deeper commercial and cultural bonds between the two countries.

Building closer economic ties will make it easier for China and Canada to speak frankly about governance, human rights and the rule of law, Trudeau told several hundred people at an event hosted by the Canada China Business Council.

“I remind everyone that, as a country that has seen first hand the benefits of free expression and good governance, Canada encourages China to do more to promote and protect human rights,’’ he said in his 22-minute speech.

“In the global village, we all have a stake in what happens here.

“The success of the

world is inexorably linked to China’s success, and I know that these are not easy conversations to have, but they are necessary ones.’’

Trudeau also said that freedom of expression is a “true Canadian value’’ protected by the country’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

He noted that he told both President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang in meetings this week in Beijing that accepting a diversity of perspectives will strengthen China, just like it has in Canada.

Trudeau even went so far as to broach the subject of gender equality.

“See, we’re Canadians — we travel with our values and we don’t hesitate to share them whenever and wherever we see opportunities,’’ he said before glancing purposefully at the table in front of the stage.

“And actually, there’s an opportunity here tonight — gentlemen, it’s 2016. We need more women at this head table.’’

It’s not the first time a Canadian prime minister has spoken bluntly while in China about the ever-present issue of that country’s human rights record.

In the past, the Chinese leadership has not taken kindly to public criticism of its human rights record, particularly from western countries.

On Tuesday, with Trudeau’s face gracing newspaper front pages, the state-run Xinhua news agency scolded Canada for allowing “groundless’’ human rights concerns to hinder what could be a productive relationship with China.

It also urged Canada to look within its borders at its own reputation on the treatment of Aboriginal Peoples, some of whom live in “mis-

erable conditions.’’

The item added the “socalled human rights issue’’ comes from the “West’s long-standing prejudice and arrogance against China.’’

On Wednesday, Canada’s ambassador to China, Guy Saint-Jacques, said the country has been moving backwards over the past three years when it comes to personal freedoms, particularly its censorship of the Internet.

“That’s why Canada has used opportunities to express its views to China,’’ Saint-Jacques said.

Trudeau’s speech also discussed the vast economic potential for both countries across numerous traditional industries like natural resources, but also in newer sectors like clean technology.

“We know that when we

do build strong and resilient relationships, when we give Canadian businesses more opportunities to succeed — they will succeed,’’ he said.

“That means more better paying jobs for Canadians — and when Canadian companies partner with Chinese companies, it means more and betterpaying jobs here in China as well.’’

Earlier yesterday, the Trudeau government announced that Canadian and Chinese companies had signed 56 new commercial contracts and agreements worth $1.2 billion.

Ottawa also said it would open seven additional visa application centres in China to help serve a growing number of Chinese tourists who would like to visit Canada.

Boosting tourism is also part of the government’s plan to build a closer link to China, which has the world’s second-largest economy and an expanding middle class.

The Canadian envoy to China said yesterday that until now, visa offices for Chinese tourists were limited to cities where Canada has a diplomatic presence.

“This is an important element that Prime Minister Trudeau is promoting in

his visit to China,’’ said Guy Saint-Jacques, who joined Trudeau at the Great Wall of China for an announcement that the countries would cooperate on the development of Chinese national parks.

Chinese tourist travel to Canada rose 24 per cent in the first six months of this year, Saint-Jacques said. He noted that now only Americans and Brits visit Canada more than the Chinese.

After the national parks announcement, Trudeau explored a section of the Great Wall with his wife Sophie Gregoire and their daughter, Ella-Grace.

The portion of the Wall they walked was temporarily closed to the public — providing them with a peaceful section to stroll, away from the usual hordes of visitors.

Trudeau also met yesterday with Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the National People’s Congress at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Today, the prime minister will hold an event at a high school with former NBA basketball star Yao Ming, meet with executives of Fosun Group and Cirque du Soleil and participate in a roundtable with women entrepreneurs.

HOLTVILLE, Calif. — In this election year, in this place, in the rare event someone mentions Canada it’s liable to be as a joke.

John Hernandez offers an example of the genre.

He greets a visitor to the southern tip of California and, upon learning he’s Canadian, Hernandez cracks a quip about the border — not the one nearby everyone’s talking about in the presidential election, but the other one, way up north.

“You gonna build a wall there, too?’’ the retired state employee says upon encountering a Canadian reporter outside a cemetery in Holtville, Calif., a few

kilometres from Mexico.

“No? Canada’s not gonna have to build a wall and pay for it yourselves?’’

He’s being sarcastic.

He knows the answer to both questions is no. Like many here, he’s noticed that only one of America’s neighbours has become an issue in this election — and it’s not the one closest to the North Pole.

“People know the disparity,’’ he said. “Mexicans are treated differently.’’

This tale of two disparately discussed neighbours has experienced its dramatic climax with Donald Trump flying into Mexico City on a public-relations mission Wednesday, followed by an evening speech where he doubled-down on his hardline approach

of deporting millions, building a wall and forcing Mexico to pay for it.

Trump delivered a one hour, 15-minute speech about border security without mentioning Canada.

It’s the story of the campaign.

Even when he raises an issue that seriously affects Canada, the northern neighbour’s an incidental bystander. Like his threat to cancel a trade deal in the country that buys 76 per cent of Canada’s exports.

In a major trade speech where he announced a renegotiation-or-cancellation policy on NAFTA, Trump referred to Mexican factories taking jobs; his campaign issued a statement railing against Mexico’s allegedly unfair

trade practices. But the northern amigo? Not a word about it — negative or otherwise.

The dynamic played out at the Republican convention.

The opening night’s speeches featured anecdotes about Americans being killed by illegal immigrants from the south.

In hallway interviews, delegates gushed about the northern neighbour.

They confessed they hadn’t thought about it much during the election.

Of the half-dozen or so people interviewed there, none were even aware the U.S. had a trade deal with Canada that predated NAFTA. All agreed with bringing back the old Canada-U.S.

accord if NAFTA got spiked.

A Texas conventiongoer’s eyebrows scrunched in surprise when a reporter asked about trade with Canada: “Why wouldn’t we favour a trade deal with Canada? Canada’s awesome,’’ said Michele Montgomery.

“I do lots of work with Canada. . . . I like keeping my friends happy. And I have friends in Canada, so I’d like to see them happy.’’

One Republican deadpanned that he worried about the northern border.

In the next split-second, he made clear he was joking.

“No, we’re not really worried about the Canadians,’’ said Jeff Hommedahl, alternate delegate from Minnesota.

“Canadians are such nice people anyway.

They’re kind of like Minnesotans.’’

He said he supported trade with Canada because living standards are similar, as are salaries. He wouldn’t expect American workers to lose jobs like they do because of commerce with poorer countries.

Loren Spivack said the purpose of border walls is stopping illegal migration.

“The idea of a wall with Canada is kind of ridiculous,’’ said Spivack, who displayed conservativethemed comic books outside the convention.

“The border’s 3,000 miles long — and there’s not much of an illegal immigration problem with Canada.’’

CUPE: Labour Day a time to reflect on progress

E

very year, as Labour Day draws near I have mixed feelings, probably like many

of you.

On one hand, Labour Day is for many the culmination of summer, with big camping trips or barbecues planned — let’s get together and celebrate summer one last time.

On the other hand, in many ways it marks the end of summer and brings on that gloomy feeling many of us had as kids as September rolls around — oh no, it’s time to go back to school.

But, as a long-time activist in the labour movement, I also have mixed feelings about Labour Day because the original meaning of this day has by and large been lost.

In today’s society, where folks have to work so much harder and longer to achieve what their parents did just 20 years ago, it’s understandable that people are squeezed for time. And it’s completely understandable that many

people today probably don’t understand the original point of observing Labour Day. Don’t get me wrong: Labour Day long weekend should be a fun time to get together with friends and family to celebrate the things that are important to us.

But as we mark the end

of summer, and acknowledge the days are getting shorter and cooler, let’s also spend some time thinking about how we can build on the gains made by previous generations that allow us the freedoms and rights we have today.

I think the best way to honour the work and struggle that came before us is to do everything we can to ensure that new workers, and generations of workers yet to come, enjoy the same rights and protections as we do.

The labour movement has never said, “OK, that’s enough progress. We can stop.” And we never should.

While much has been accomplished, there is so much more to do.

When B.C.’s economy is “No. 1” in the country, but we still have one of the highest rates of child poverty, it’s clear that our work is not done.

When hundreds of schools are closed across the province while millionaires get another tax

break, we know our work is not done.

When our government puts all our economic eggs in the mega-project basket and then brings in temporary foreign workers with no path to citizenship, our work is not done.

And when post-secondary training and education — and the opportunities to succeed that come with it — is priced out of reach for the majority of British Columbians, our work is not done.

It’s only by boldly demanding change — and fighting for it — that we make progress.

The labour movement has done that for generations, and made positive, progressive change for millions of workers, unionized and not.

It’s time to ramp up our efforts in our workplaces, in our communities and at the ballot box.

We are fortunate to live and work in such a beautiful place.

September is Disability Employment Month WorkBC to promote services and support to help job seekers with disabilities and resources for employers to build inclusive workplaces This September, British Columbia will highlight inclusive employers and the contributions of people with disabilities in the workplace with the third-annual Disability Employment Month.

During the month, WorkBC Employment Services Centres throughout British Columbia will host open houses, job fairs and workshops to highlight the range of services and supports available to help job seekers with disabilities, as well as resources for employers who want to hire people with disabilities and build inclusive workplaces.

The Presidents Group, a network of B.C. business leaders, champion employment and consumer opportunities and improved outcomes for people with disabilities.

Presidents Group members are encouraging employers to hire more people with disabilities and share their collective learnings on the recruitment, hiring and retention of employees with disabilities with other employers.

Employers from all sectors of B.C. recognize the benefits people with disabilities bring to the workplace.

For example, Vancity recently identified a business need within their enterprise-wide information technology upgrade project that

aligned with the skill sets of people on the autism spectrum and hired eight people who have been on the job since December 2015.

Another B.C. employer, Pacific Bolt Manufacturing, recently hired Jamie, a young man with an intellectual disability as a facilities technician, responsible for sorting, packaging and janitorial duties.

Jamie was hired through Ready, Willing and Able, a national initiative designed to increase labour force participation of people with intellectual disabilities and autism.

The City of Surrey, a public-sector organization with 4,000 employees, is also working hard to become a “disability confident” employer.

Surrey has hired people with disabilities for a variety of roles, including athletes with disabilities, like former Paralympian Alison Kabush, who works as an instructor for Surrey’s sports and recreation programs, including the Boccia program, an adapted version of Bocce for players aged six years and up.

Join the Kamloops and District Labour Council (KDLC) for its annual Labour Day barbecue on Monday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at McDonald Park.

The event will feature music, food and prizes with free activities for kids including bouncy castles, face painting, soccer with the TRU Wolfpack, science experiments, a dunk tank with the United Steelworkers and more.

The KDLC is celebrating its 60th anniversary.

“At the KDLC, making life better for working people is, to put it simply, a labour of love,” reads a statement on the KDLC website.

“Values like fairness, equality and working together are what drive us to make a difference and are why we work hard to tackle issues like poverty, precarious work and the shrinking number of good jobs.”

The council says it has advocated for stronger public pensions for almost a decade. Now, the federal government and Canada’s premiers have agreed to expand the Canadian Pension Plan.

“While today’s seniors still need help to avoid falling into poverty, it is young workers who will benefit most from this change. Already faced

with a hostile jobs market and record levels of debt, today’s young workers needed a new way to save for retirement. Planning for the future isn’t possible when you can’t count on a steady income and predictable work hours, let alone finding a job in the first place.”

The council is also sounding off on the provincial government’s need to restore conditions required to grow and sustain good jobs and a diverse economy, something it calls a “fair and simple request.”

The KDLC says increasing minimum wage is the starting point and has been active in the Fight for $15 movement.

KDLC is also active in supporting Canadian unions in their lobbying of the federal government to ban asbestos, exposure to which it calls the leading cause of workplace-related deaths.

“Good jobs, safe workplaces, fairness and equality are the basic ingredients of a better future.

“These are the things that union leaders believe in and work for every day. For us, it truly is a labour of love and it’s what motivates us to march in the streets and celebrate in the parks, playgrounds and community spaces across Canada this weekend.”

“Here, in the morning, people eat a lot, a lot, a lot,” said defender Maxime Fieujean. It’s not so in France.

“For me, it’s impossible. When I take just a little thing for breakfast, everyone looks at me and says ‘What are you doing? You don’t eat.’”

How about parties?

“When you have a little party with the team or something, you’re supposed to bring your own drinks and drink your own drinks,” said centre-back Thomas Lantmeeters.

“In Belgium, we are used to bringing our own drinks, but then we put it all together and drink from everyone’s.”

Interacting with the coaches?

“They show emotion more than the Japanese and they talk to the coach a lot, positively,” said midfielder Yuya Nakano.

“They try to make a good team with the coach and they tell their opinions to the coach.”

But team meals are the same, right?

“When we go to a restaurant in Canada, we both like eating very slowly,” midfielder Khalifa Fanne said of he and his countryman, Fieujean.

“Canadians are going very fast. They’re all waiting for us at the end of the dinner and then they say, ‘OK guys, hurry up. We’ve got to go.’”

And though the game is the same at its heart, even life on the soccer pitch is different for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack’s quartet of international players.

“It has been an adjustment for a couple of guys because in Canada it’s very physical, not as technical as it is in Europe,” WolfPack head coach John Antulov said.

The North American game focuses more on strength, fitness and making quick decisions. Soccer is not the chess match in Canada that it is in Europe.

“They notice the difference and we see a difference,” Antulov continued. “It doesn’t take them long. If you’re good with the ball at your feet, you get used to the style fairly quickly.”

International recruits aren’t new to the WolfPack — Barcelona’s Oriol Torres played five years for the club before graduating at the end of last season and Manchester’s

Yuya Nakano is focused on adapting to life on and off the pitch in Kamloops. The Japanese recruit plays midfield for the TRU WolfPack and is one of four internationals on the squad.

With Fanne and Fieujean both hailing from France, Lantmeeters here from

Belgium for one semester and Nakano a recent import from Japan, the WolfPack have players representing three of the world’s seven continents each time the club takes to the pitch.

The Canada West doesn’t place a limit on internationally born players in soccer, though Antulov said teams may be restricted to five beginning next season.

All four of the import Wolves are expected to play large roles for the club this season.

Lantmeeters, Fanne and Nakano all started both matches for the Pack last weekend and Fieujean was on the backline for Thompson Rivers’ win against the Victoria Vikes.

The situation will be much the same this weekend, when the WolfPack travel to the Lower Mainland to face the Fraser Valley Cascades (0-0) and the Trinity Western Spartans (2-0).

“I think a lot of other countries underestimate the level of talent we have here,” Antulov said.

“So when they come and try out for the team, they think they’re going to make it because they’ve from Brazil or they’re from Argentina or they’re from France. All of a sudden, they come in and they realize the quality of player we have here is very, very good and we’re only going to get better.”

For their part, the WolfPack’s international quartet didn’t underestimate the quality of play in North America, but was surprised nonetheless. Interuniversity play doesn’t occur in Europe — Lantmeeters said they only see it in the movies — so it was hard to truly know what to expect.

And, while the WolfPack is benefitting from importing players that are exceptionally talented, Fanne, Lantmeeters, Fieujean and Nakano are reaping the benefits of improving their English, experiencing a new culture and adding additional weapons to their soccer arsenals.

They said it’s worth the quick meals, the odd-tasting mustard and the language barriers.

“All of them are from Canada and they speak, of course, English,” Nakano of his teammates. “Sometimes I don’t know what they say and then I feel lonely or something, but they help a lot and they communicate to me “So I don’t really have culture shock.”

JUNIOR B CLUB HOPES TO REAP REWARDS FROM IMPROVED RETURNING GROUP

When the Kamloops Storm started the 2015-2016 season, they were a little light on junior experience.

The club had one player, captain Brett Watkinson, who had ever played a full season in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. A few others had played a handful of games as affiliate players, but were getting their first taste of a 52-game junior B campaign.

The situation will be much improved in 2016-2017, as the Storm embark on their first season playing at

Kamloops’ Memorial Arena downtown.

Nineteen-yearold Keaton Gordon returns as the club’s elder statesman, embarking on his third full season with the club after a brief stint in junior A to start 2015-2016. He’ll be joined in the forward corps by fellow 19-year-olds Dallas Otto and Kole Comin, as well as 17-year-old Brendan Lane, all of whom played in the KIJHL as rookies last year.

“Last year, we didn’t pull through as much as we should have, so hoping the older guys can step up and take control here,” Comin said.

“I think it will definitely help with all the older guys.”

Two people were out for a jog on Sunday August 28th at 7:25 am, when a vehicle crossed the centre line and hit the inside jogger. The jogger that was stuck is in very serious condition at Royal Inland Hospital. The police need your help to help solve this.

There have been numerous “Tips” come to the police but they still lack the main answer; of who was the driver of the suspect vehicle. The vehicle involved in the hit and run was stolen and has been recovered.

KNOW THIS PERSON A surveillance video has captured a suspect who stole a bicycle from the downtown area on Wednesday August 17th. This suspect took his time to cut the lock off of the bike and then casually rode away.

The male is described as Caucasian, mid 30’s, short dark hair with goatee and a thin black beard and at the time was wearing a green “DC” ball cap, a white “Rüfen” T shirt and grey shorts.

There is no doubt that this not the first time for stealing a bike, as no one walks downtown with tools to cut off bicycle locks. The bicycle is described as a white Kona and it can be easily identified by the owners.

SUSPICIOUS TRAIN TRESTLE FIRE The CN Police are looking for your help in solving a suspicious fire that took place on Friday April 29th between 12:30 and 5:30 am at the CN Trestle Bridge at Steton Portage BC. The train trestle, located 25 kms west of Lillooet BC, is in a remote area with few people.

This is not the first time there was

sanctioned twice for violating the league’s social-media policy, “will result in his immediate dismissal,’’ Orridge said in a statement.

The Riders signed Mitchell to their practice roster Wednesday, a move that drew criticism from Canadian Jewish organizations.

Mitchell hasn’t played since being released by the Montreal Alouettes in June 2015. He was fined a month earlier over anti-Semitic posts on his Twitter account, which included a link to a Holocaust-denial video.

The 31-year-old also played for the B.C. Lions and Toronto Argonauts.

Orridge said the CFL will be monitoring Mitchell’s social-media posts.

“Our social-media policy expressly prohibits a current player, team or league employee from using social media, including the retweeting or reposting of someone else’s comments, to condone discrimination, harassment or violence,’’ Orridge said in a statement.

“Since Mitchell has now returned to our league with another club, his new employer has reached out to the league office to assure us they, too, take this matter very seriously and any such inappro-

priate behaviour from Mitchell will result in his immediate dismissal.

“We too will monitor any commentary he may make as a member of our league.

Such comments, which put the league’s reputation as a progressive and positive member of the community in question, will not be tolerated.’’

After being fined in 2015, Mitchell apologized in a joint statement by the CFL Players’ Association and B’nai Brith Canada, saying it was “a learning moment for me.’’

He agreed to work with B’nai Brith, a Jewish human rights organization, to “educate myself about this and other human rights matters.’’

But Shimon Koffler Fogel, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, said yesterday there was no evidence Mitchell has learned from his mistakes.

“We are deeply troubled that Mitchell is continuing to spread messages of hate against the Jewish people,’’ he said in a statement.

“The Montreal Alouettes and the Canadian Football League did the right thing in 2015 by denouncing Mitchell’s hateful tweets and levying a fine against

him for his troubling behaviour.

“Clearly, Mitchell has not learned from his past mistakes.

We have engaged with the CFL and the Saskatchewan Roughriders and they have assured us they are investigating.’’

The CIJA included screenshots of several recent retweets from Mitchell it deemed troubling.

Mitchell said he was aware of the reputation he brings to Saskatchewan.

“I’ve been around pretty much all the good and the bad at the maximum extremes,’’ he said.

“What’s going on here is that I got the opportunity to go ahead and show everybody who I am.

If you don’t know me, all you’ve got to do is go and look me up and then, all of a sudden, you’ll find out who I am.

“But I’m just myself.

I’m comfortable being myself. I’m an outspoken guy, but every team I’ve always been around, I’ve loved my teammates to death.’’

The six-foot-five, 316-pound Mitchell, a 2011 CFL all-star with B.C., also landed in hot water with the CFL in 2012 when he was fined for using derogatory terms against people of Chinese descent on Twitter.

SANTA CLARA — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick said he has been wearing socks depicting police officers as pigs in protest of “rogue cops’’ who put the community and other officers at risk.

Kaepernick issued a statement on Twitter yesterday after photos began circulating on social media of him wearing the socks that show a pig dressed in a police hat.

The photos were taken earlier in training camp before Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during the national anthem as a form of protest became public.

“I wore these socks, in the past, because the rogue cops that are allowed to hold positions in police departments not only put the community in danger, but also put the cops that have the right intentions in danger by creating an environment of tension and mistrust,’’ he wrote.

“I have two uncles and friends who are police officers and serve ALL people. So, before these socks, which were worn before I took my public stance, are used to distract from the real issues, I wanted to address this immediately.’’

Kaepernick created a firestorm last weekend when his decision to sit during the national anthem in protest of what he called oppression of AfricanAmericans and other minorities became public.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The reigning World Series champions had been rendered an afterthought as the calendar flipped to August, the Kansas City Royals so far out of playoff contention that some were wondering whether they might begin jettisoning their stars and rebuilding.

They proceeded to have one of the best months in franchise history.

Despite back-to-back extrainning losses to the Yankees, the Royals still finished 20-9 in August to climb back into the post-season chase. They’ve won seven of their past eight series and 18 of their past 24 games as they head into an important series against the Detroit Tigers this weekend.

The Tigers are among the teams standing between Kansas City and an AL wildcard spot.

“It really shows the character and how resilient they are,’’ said Royals outfielder Billy Burns, whose arrival in late July coincided with their recent run. “I saw it two years ago in the wild-card game when I was with Oakland and we had them down with Jon Lester on the mound.

“Nothing with this team really surprises me.’’

Still, the Royals went just 7-19 in July. Their starting rotation was atrocious, they had one of the most impotent lineups in the majors and a series of injuries had scuttled any sort of chemistry.

There was nothing to indicate that such an about-face was about to happen.

Then the praying mantis showed up.

On a team that believes wholeheartedly in karma, the arrival of the bug-eyed insect during a win over Toronto on Aug. 6 came with deeper meaning. The Royals adopted the Rally Mantis and took him on the road, where they won five of six games. And when the bug died in Minnesota — the Royals lost that day, by the way — they were unsurprised when another mantis flew in during a game in Detroit.

This time, Rally Mantis Jr. was given a proper cage complete with food, greenery and, well, insect versions of all the trappings that major league ballplayers have in their clubhouses.

Burns is the caretaker of the bug. And since his arrival, the post-season charge has pressed on. The Royals’ win total in August was their best

“That shows you the makeup of this club,’’ said reliever Luke Hochevar, one of the longest-tenured Royals. “When you have really, really good talent combined with great makeup, that’s the recipe.’’

The Royals have done it despite the injury trouble they steered clear of last year.

They lost right-hander Kris Medlen, one of their projected starters, to rotator cuff inflammation in May. Then they lost third baseman Mike Moustakas to a torn ACL in a freak collision with left-fielder Alex Gordon, who wound up missing several weeks with an injured wrist.

Hochevar was shelved with season-ending surgery for symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome, which had caused pain and coldness in his pitching arm. All-Star closer Wade Davis followed him to the disable list with a flexor strain, though he is expected to rejoin the club this weekend — just in time for the final push for the playoffs.

Kansas City has appeared in the past two World Series but, in reality, the once-downtrodden club has been playing meaningful baseball this time of year four straight years. The

core group understands what it takes to be successful when the temperatures start to fall and the pressure starts to rise.

“We’re just taking each day as a new day,’’ first baseman Eric Hosmer said. “We’re not worrying about scoreboards or who is ahead of us in the standings. You know there’s so much time left and another team can get hot like we did.

We just need to stay consistent.’’

Much of the credit for the turnaround is owed to general manager Dayton Moore.

He was hearing from plenty of folks in late July that it was time to sell off. The Royals were 11 games back in the AL Central and 9 1/2 games back in the wild-card race, and the window for contending appeared to have closed.

Moore instead decided to stand pat, confident that a bunch of scuffling guys could turn it around.

Now, the question is whether they did it in time.

“The experience of this team, we all realize that a lot of crazy stuff can happen,’’ Hosmer said. “We set out for the fact that it’s a 162-game season. So no matter what, if we’re having a good time or a bad time, we’re going to be ready for the next day.’’

TORONTO — Benoit Huot hesitates at the mention of retirement.

As the veteran Canadian swimmer heads into his fifth Paralympics, he isn’t thinking too much about how many Games he may have left, but admits he’s going to savour every moment in Brazil.

“I’ll finish with Rio and I’ll reevaluate after the Games if I have another year in me and, if I do, I’ll go year-by-year,’’ Huot said this week at Toronto’s Pan Am Sports Centre. “I’m 32 now and I think it’s really difficult to put myself in the mindset of that I’m going for another full cycle.’’

The Longueuil, Que., native has had an illustrious career that includes 19 Paralympic medals — nine of which are gold. Huot, who has club feet, set a world record in the SM10 200-metre individual medley at the 2012 London Games, finishing the race in two minutes 10.01 seconds.

He also took silver in the 400m freestyle and captured bronze in the 100 backstroke in London. Huot’s best Paralympics were in Athens in 2004 when he won five gold and a silver.

The five-foot-eight, 154-pound swimmer is coming off a successful 2015 season that saw him win three medals at the world championships and three more at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto, including gold in the 400m freestyle.

His career hasn’t come without disappointment, however. Despite collecting four bronze at the Beijing Games in 2008, he missed the podium in the 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly, events in which he thrived four years earlier.

“He probably could have walked away from swimming after Beijing, it was that rough of an experience for him,’’ Canadian head coach Craig McCord said. “But he chose not to and I should call him a bit of a renaissance man because he went back to the drawing board, he figured out what he needed to do and it was a slow, hard battle back.

“That picture of him with his arms spread out winning Canada’s first gold medal in the whole London Paralympics four years ago, that was the completion of the renaissance for him.’’

McCord, who will retire as Canada’s coach after the Rio Games, has known Huot for 16 years and says his training has been strong.

“I’ve never seen him as dedicated in the focus as he’s been in the last year and a half with the possibility that he does know it could be the end of the road for him, so he wants to make sure he leaves on his terms,’’ McCord said.

His career has followed a similar path to that of Michael Phelps, the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. Phelps, who is a year younger than Huot, also got his international start at the 2000 Sydney Games and retired at the conclusion of Rio earlier this month.

The two first met at the 2005 world championships in Montreal and have encountered each other a couple times since.

“I think without even knowing Michael that well, I’m pretty sure what he’s living every day at age 31 and after five Olympic Games, we live similar things without even knowing each other,’’ Huot said.

“I inspire myself a lot with what he’s done and because we’ve had a similar path, obviously in a different world.’’

Now a veteran, Canada’s flag-bearer at the London 2012 closing ceremony hopes that he’s been able to pass down knowledge to some of his younger Canadian teammates that includes 13-year-old Danielle Dorris.

“I’m very pleased to see where our sport is going so if this is it for me, I feel like there’s a great legacy behind,’’ he said. “I feel like I’m leaving at a good place. I don’t know what I’m going to do after but maybe I can still help.’’

The Paralympics open Wednesday in Rio. Canada is sending 162 athletes and is aiming for a top-16 finish in the overall medal standings.

The club announced yesterday the knuckleball specialist has been signed to a majorleague contract.

Thole elected to become a free agent on Tuesday night after clearing waivers.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Vivian Isabelle Weller (nee Kunst) May 17, 1934 – August 24, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Vivian Isabelle Weller (nee Kunst) of Kamloops at 82 years of age.

Vivian is survived by her loving husband of more than 60 years Richard (Dick) and their children Victoria (Christian Martinez) Weller, Dana (Marcel) Gibeault and David (Elizabeth) Weller, and their grandchildren Chelsea and Dakota Martinez and Christopher and Sean Weller and best friends George and Chris Hart. She is predeceased by her mother Anna Kunst.

Vivian was born in Winnipeg and as a young woman she moved to Toronto where she worked for Tamblyn Drugs as a comptometer operator, and met and married Richard. All three children were born in Toronto and in 1969 the family moved to Kamloops where Richard and Vivian owned and operated Living Lighting at the new Thompson Park Mall. Later Vivian opened The Panhandler/Rafters in Sahali Mall. Good times included picnicking at The Maples, renting cottages at Ingolf and other Ontario lakes, taking trips to Hawaii, touring England and enjoying the backyard pool with family and friends.

Special thanks to Vital Air, Dr. Anders, Dr. Bishop, the nurses throughout Royal Inland Hospital and in particular those on 3rd Floor West, and our wonderful neighbours in Arbutus Heights.

Vivian loved cats and memorial donations may be made to the SPCA. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.

Barry James Kostering December 7, 1942 – August 26, 2016

Barry James Kostering, 73, passed away quietly in his home in Kamloops, BC on Friday, August 26, 2016.

Barry was born December 7, 1942 at Lady Minto Hospital in Ashcroft, BC. to Eva (Ivy Kostering) Robillard.

He was raised by his grandparents Charles and Mary Kostering in Clinton, BC and attended school there until he graduated in 1959. He married Linda Mucha on September 23, 1966 in Nakusp and had four wonderful sons Sean, Travis, Tyler and Darryl. After Barry graduated from school in Clinton he moved to Vancouver and worked at the CPR unloading cargo for two years. He then found a job as a surveyor at C.E. Scholtz High Energy Developers in Castlegar until 1968 when he moved to BC Hydro where he worked until he retired in 2003. Barry was a loyal member and volunteer of the Knights of Columbus, Christmas Amalgamated, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Out of the Cold, New Life Mission and Young Life Canada among other charities.

In addition to his grandparents and parents, he is predeceased by a son Darryl Kostering and his wife Linda. He is survived by his sons Sean, Travis and his wife Tanya, and Tyler all of Chilliwack, his sisters Sandra Bowden and Debbie Gonvick, his grandchildren Brandon and his wife Carmon and Shailynn, his long-time friends Shirley Levesque and Linda McNiece.

A Service of Rememberance will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kamloops, BC on Monday, September 5th at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at Pioneer Cemetery in Clinton, everyone welcome on Tuesday, September 6 at 11:00 am.

Donations may be made in memory of Barry to the Knights of Columbus care of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

Maurice Tuyttens

October 21, 1931 – August 30, 2016

On Saturday August 27, 2016 Kenneth Hugh Booth, at the age of 70, passed away after a short battle with cancer in Kamloops, BC, where he was born and lived pretty well his whole life.

Maurice was born in Agassiz, BC on October 21, 1931 and passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 in Kamloops, BC.

He was born on January 19, 1946 to Ken and Beth Booth.

Graduated high school in Kamloops and went to welding school in Kelowna.

He married the love of his life Cheryl on June 28, 1968. Hugh worked construction all over B.C. and other places making some life long friendships with co-workers. Hugh and Cheryl have three children Colleen, Rhonda and Ken. Hugh and Cheryl enjoyed many activities such as motorcycling, tennis and biking.

They took many trips including motorcycle rides through the States and Mexico. Hugh retired three years ago, he enjoyed his work and came to love his retirement. Hugh volunteered at the Kamloops Food Bank and he took an injured co-worker who resided at Overlander Extended Care for walks to Tims for coffee every week. Hugh had a great sense of humour, a huge love for all children, love for his neighbours and just all people. He saw the good in everyone.

Maurice is survived by his beloved wife Grace, daughters Deborah (Bonnie), Barbara, son Michael and sister Yvonne Tremblay. He is predeceased by his son Maurice Jr., parents Maurice and Amelia Tuyttens and brother Bert. In 1951, when Maurice moved to Kamloops, he started working for the CN Rail and retired in 1991 as a conductor. Maurice was active in St. John Vianney Parish in Westsyde with the Knights of Columbus and the Charismatic Renewal. He was an avid golfer who loved life.

Hugh is survived by his loving wife Cheryl, daughter Colleen (Dave), daughter Rhonda (Wayde), son Ken (Karen) and his grandchildren Nick, Ashlyn, Cailyn, Hailey, Hannah, Nathan, Dylan and Noah.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Kamloops Alliance Church located at 200 Leigh Road, Kamloops, BC at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 2, 2016 with a tea to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kamloops Hospice Association or the Kamloops Food Bank.

Shaun Garry Hedges April 20, 1979 – July 2, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Son Shaun Garry Hedges on July 2, 2016.

Left to mourn his passing are his Parents Garry and Jo-Ann, Sister Tiffany (James, Kensie, Kaia and Piper). Grandmothers Marion and Victoria, Aunts Valerie (Aron) and Cindy, numerous cousins and much loved pets Baby and Kitten.

Shaun was predeceased by his Grandfathers John and Alexander and Uncle Ken. Shaun was born in Kamloops on April 20, 1979 and as a young boy enjoyed playing soccer, and was a member of Cubs and Boy Scouts and attended numerous Jamborees.

He developed a love of the outdoors and spent summers camping and fishing with his family. As a young teen, he discovered that the world of technology would be in his future and to further his career he eventually moved to Calgary and Vancouver, where he lived for many years. Shaun’s work took him to Europe and the U.S.A. and in time he formed his own company, and because he did not like to take orders from anyone, it seemed like a good choice. Tired of the big city, he returned home to live a more relaxed life and enjoy all the outdoors activities he’d missed. Shaun enjoyed travelling, fast cars, Japanese food and culture, music, movies, cooking (always with a debris field surrounding him), the colour red, gummy bears, being a crazy Uncle and shopping on Amazon Prime (it was always Xmas when a new parcel arrived). He was generous to worthy causes and loved his family dearly. If Shaun was to sum up his life, I think he would say “I did it my way”. We will miss his smile, hearty laugh and wicked sense of humour.

A kind heart has left too soon.

We would like to thank all who sent cards, brought food and flowers and the many phone calls we received.

The members of Echo Nebraska were delighted with the crowd when they played The Grind in April — so much so they’ve added Kamloops to their current tour and have a show at The Dirty Jersey, 1200 Eighth St., on Sept. 2. WCT season kicks off with Made in Italy JESSICA KLYMCHUK

F

arren Timoteo is making his return to the Western Canada Theatre stage a personal one, with a story heavily inspired by his Italian immigrant family.

The playwright and lone actor for Made in Italy — premiering Sept.

8 at the Pavilion Theatre — joined outgoing WCT artistic director Daryl Cloran in 2012 for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and is collaborating with him again to present the world premiere of this comedic coming-of-age story.

When approached with the script, Cloran was struck by its relatability.

“There are a lot of actors out there who want to write their own one-person show but, Farren’s, I just felt like this is a story that our audiences will really enjoy because it’s that fish-out-of-water, sort of caught between two communities trying to find where they belong . . . I think it speaks to everyone,” Cloran said.

Set in 1970s Jasper, Made in Italy follows teenager Francesco — inspired by Timoteo’s father — through his efforts to make his mark on the world.

He faces questions of identity, family and belonging, partly through music and amidst the disco culture of the 1970s.

Timoteo has been experimenting with Italian-related material for close to 20 years, but this will mark the first time he has drawn so profoundly

from personal experiences.

For the last 10 years, the Edmonton-native has been the artistic director for Alberta Opera, a musical theatre company that does adaptations of fairytales.

“I think I’ve been cutting my teeth as a writer in the musical theatre genre . . . this is an entirely different step to do something that feels a lot closer to me,” Timoteo said. “It’s a very different experience.”

Timoteo’s grandfather immigrated to Alberta, taking a job with CN Rail and settling in Jasper — a place that shares the same mountainous qualities of the family’s home region of Abruzzo, Italy.

The characters who make up Francesco’s Italian family in the play are amalgamations of Timoteo’s own family members, he said.

Conversations the audience will hear are ones he’s likely heard before — a theatrical combination of fiction and nonfiction.

Many of them happen around an elegant dining-room table — a place of tradition for Italian families — with a background wall covered in framed photographs, several taken from Timoteo’s personal albums.

One, in particular, is of his grandmother, who died when he was a young boy.

“I’m smushing a lot of different people together but, especially as we get older and some of those people are no longer with us, there’s something really beautiful about preserving the spirit of these characters, this family that came directly from Italy,” Timoteo said.

“It’s pretty exciting to remind myself that storytelling is a method to preserve a legacy and to preserve that spirit.”

The actor draws much of his inspiration for the art of the oneman play from his time with Edmonton’s Fringe Festival.

Audiences will see him jump between eccentric characters and accents with few costume adjustments.

Music plays a significant role in the show — as it has in Timoteo’s life — with songs in both Italian and English and a flare of 1970s disco. Cloran teased at least one scene in which choreographer Laura Krewsky has Francesco dancing on the table in Jasper’s discotheque.

Made in Italy runs Sept. 8 to Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8 p.m. on weekends. A pay-what-youcan matinee is on Sept.

17 at 2 p.m. There are no Sunday performances.

adison Olds’ grandmother always wanted her to play country music.

The local singersongwriter is better known for indie-folk music but grandma loves Blake Shelton so, when she stumbled on a national contest promoting up-and-coming country artists, she encouraged her granddaughter to enter.

There was only one problem.

“I didn’t really have any country songs,” the 18-year-old told KTW. It didn’t take long, however, for Olds to join friends and musicians Chloe Beauchamp and Abby Wale, both 20, to submit a track since named

a top four finalist in the Chevy Tailgate contest.

The contest is a partnership with the Country Music Television Canada and started with more than 100 video submissions of original songs.

It was narrowed down to 12 semi-finalists, including Olds, Beauchamp and Wale, who go by the The Bees and the Bare Bones.

The trio went to Camrose, Alta. and performed at the Big Valley Jamboree for a group of about 70

people before eagerly watching lineups form for voting.

“We were so nervous,” Wale said.

Stormy weather prevented their win from being announced on the main stage but, as they compete in the top four slot, they have plans to be back in Camrose one day.

“I can only hope in a couple years we will be on the main stage and we’ll have thousands [in the crowd],” Olds said.

Their song Mad Love

is a “hate song disguised as a love song,” Olds explained of the song about heartbreak.

“It sort of comes from a place where everyone has been in their life.”

As of KTW’s press time, it was leading the competition by a slim margin — 23,615 votes to solo artist Emma Peterson’s song I’ll be There, which had 22,194 votes.

“Right now, we’re just waiting for some voting,” Olds said.

The winner lands free studio time in Tenassee which the trio said they would use to record an EP. The winner will be announced at the Canadian Country Music Awards on Sept.

11.

The Kamloops Museum and Archives will present Re:Recording Chinese Histories, a project by Ontario artist Morris Lum. The exhibition will include photographs and mural-size prints of Chinese cultural sites, along with objects texts and other dona-

tions in the museum collection.

The project is a partnership between the artist, the Kamloops Chinese Cultural Association and the Kamloops Chinese Freemason to focus on the history of the Chinese people who came to Canada and Kamloops.

Watch out vinyl — cassettes also making a comeback

W

hile much has been made about the huge comeback of vinyl records recently, another musical comeback has been quietly bubbling up from obscurity in the past five years: the cassette tape.

The cassette tape revival can be traced back to two places, Springfield, Mo., home of cassette manufactures National Audio Company (NAC), and Fullerton, Calif., home of cassette-only record label Burger Records.

During the 1990s, when the music industry was moving toward compact discs, NAC was making a slow but steady living selling blank tapes and spoken-word recordings, while buying cassette manufacturing equipment for cheap and buying blank cassette shells overseas from bankrupt companies.

In 2014, NAC made $5 million from cassette sales, a 33 per cent increase from 2013.

Seventy per cent of the output from NAC comes from independent labels and bands, but a number of major

labels have released cassettes as well, the majority coming from Universal Music Group.

Kanye West, Eminem and even Justin Bieber have made small runs of cassette releases in the past five years. But it’s not the big names feuling this revival.

It’s the independent labels.

Burger Records co-founder Sean Bohrman said a number of factors have given to the return of cassettes.

Burger Records themselves are one of more than 1,000 cas-

sette labels producing music today.

They say it’s less of a business decision and more of a platform to release music.

The label never sells anything for more than $5 a release.

A big part of it is the do-it-yourself culture of independent music, and the ease and lack of cost to releasing music by cassette.

Bohrman said a cassette release is “50 per cent cheaper than a CD, or even a digital album, they fit into your pocket and you can play them over and over in your car.”

The format is much more durable than a CD. Where a scratch could destroy a CD-R, you can throw a cassette without a case into the back of your car without damaging it at all.

There’s also the nostalgia factor, the same factor driving the vinyl record boom. Many of those making cassettes today grew up with them and with mixtape culture.

They’re less bulky than a vinyl record and still have the tactile quality of a record or CD that a digital release lacks.

In a time where digital music is putting emphasis on a single song, cassettes bring back the album feel.

Bohrman said, “Bands are trying to create a listening experience from the first track to the last.

“They put together their songs in a specific sequence. [Listeners]

are making their own playlists, cutting out songs and not letting songs grown on them.

“If they don’t like it after the first 10 seconds, they’re on to the next thing.”

Cassettes are difficult to cue to specific songs, so the listener is often forced to experience the album in it’s entirety.

Tapes have a long history in the underground as well.

From metal and punk bands in the 1970s and 1980s making their own albums on re-recorded (or repurposed) tapes, and the strong mixtape culture of early hip-hop, which was done entirely live and could only be reproduced by a cassette tape recording on a Walkman.

Small labels can do a run of 100 tapes for just $175 to $275 dollars, with the same run on vinyl costing

$1,000 or more.

It makes more sense for obscure and experimental artists to producing non-commercial music on tape for fans, rather than risking a bigger cash outlay for a vinyl, CD or digital release.

It provides an easy and cheap way of getting music out to the public with less risk to the artist.

Canada has gotten in on the tape revival too, with Victoria’s Shake! Records releasing small runs of mostly Canadian garage and punk bands, and Vancouver’s 1080p Records focusing on experimental, electronic and found sound recordings.

H

is cocoa brown eyes appear despondent, yet when glancing my way he blinks flirtatiously.

He inches closer, gently nudging my side. There’s an instant connection.

“What’s with the long face, Dude?” I ask, while brushing a wisp of silver hair away from his freckled brow. Although he doesn’t reply, I know how to make him happy.

And before long, I have him eating out of the palm of my hand.

Smoke, a new found friend, is my equestrian partner during our threeday stint at Siwash Lake in B.C.’s Cariboo. And while feeding him a couple of hay-blend biscuits, my feelings of trepidation begin to wane. Although my husband is ready to live out his elusive cowboy dream, I’ve arrived with some uncertainty about straddling any saddle.

“Don’t worry, you’ll feel comfortable before heading out,” our guide said consolingly.

“It all starts with learning about horsemanship.”

Although not sporting the typical chaps and spurs, this confident wrangler, could pass as a modern day Gene Autry in his plaid shirt and wide-brimmed Stetson.

He went on to explain that Siwash offers one of the best riding programs around and, once confident, guests are free to venture out on their own.

The great room at Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort features plenty of wood and a chandelier made out of dozens of antlers.

We soon discover that this ‘venturing’ is not a mere walk in the park.

“As well as the 160 Siwash-owned acres, we have access to trails that wind through the encompassing 80,000 acres of crown land,” our guide informed us, after providing step by step instruction that includes everything from hoof to hair care.

I squirm into the supple leather saddle, and take a deep breath of fresh country air.

In a matter of minutes I’ve been transformed from a city slicker to a Cariboo cowgirl who is ready to ride the range.

We plod through timbered forests where groves of

trembling aspen quiver next to Douglas fir.

The Church of Nicolas

T

he Apostle John wrote the Book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible.

In the early chapters of the book, he relays a prophetic message received from Jesus himself, who commands him to write specific letters to the Asia Minor churches of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.

Only the churches of Smyrna and Philadelphia receive positive, affirming messages — the other five are criticized for various practices inconsistent with believers in a true church of God. The churches at Thyatira and Pergamum are specifically admonished for their tolerance of Nicolaitan practices, specifically eating food sacrificed to idols and immorality.

The spirit of Jesus said to the church of Ephesus, “But you have this in your favour: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.”

There are very few places in Scripture where God says he “hates” something, but this is one.

So, just who was Nicolas and what was it he encouraged that was so abhorrent to God? Nicolas was one of the seven original deacons chosen by the early church to help in the distribution of food and alms.

Their specific qualifications were that they were “full of the Spirit and wisdom.”

Nicolas is the only one of the seven, however, who was identified as a convert to Judaism.

His background was in the pagan world as opposed to the others who were life-long Jews.

Unfortunately, that pagan influence reasserted itself in his life and his influence on new believers.

The seven cities that received letters were known in the ancient world as centres of pagan worship, especially Ephesus, Pergamum and Thyatira.

Diana, while Pergamum was a particular hotspot of pagan practice.

The spirit of Jesus says in his letter to them, “I know where you live — where Satan has his throne.”

Obviously, it was a tough place to have a Christian church and some members had slipped back into the pagan practices common there.

Very little is known about Nicolas, but apparently he had come to the opinion that it was possible to be a part of a Christian church and also engage in the immoral practices of the pagan religions common in the area.

Perhaps it was a misguided attempt to make the church more attractive to pagan converts.

Maybe it was just a matter of liberal thinking.

But, essentially, it was a teaching of moral compromise and he was successful in winning over a considerable number to his line of thinking.

There are an increasing number of churches today that see nothing wrong with celebrating, affirming and even sanctifying behaviours that are explicitly forbidden to Christians by Holy Scripture.

It would appear that Nicolaitan thinking is alive and well 2000 years later.

As the spirit of Jesus said to the compromisers at Thyatira, “. . . I will repay each of you according

to your deeds.”

In addition, when Jesus was preaching in person, talking about those approaching the gates of Heaven in the afterlife, said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, will enter into the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven . . . I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”

Clearly, there are very serious consequences to compromising with the world, even if so-called believers claim to be an active member of a Christian church with an impressive resume.

There are several passages in Scripture that warn against compromising with the teachings of the world.

The Apostle Paul writes to the church at Rome, “Do not conform any longer to the world . . .” The Apostle John quotes Jesus as saying, “[My followers] are not of the world any more than I am of the world.”

Compromising with the world results in a weakened, limp-wristed form of Christianity, incapable of withstanding the wiles of Satan.

What we need today is a muscular Christianity capable of taking on Satan on his own turf.

That is why the last chapter in Ephesians talks about putting on the “full armor of God”: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the sandals of readiness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, “which is the word of God.” God does not expect us to take on the evil one unarmed and has given us everything we need to accomplish holy tasks.

But first we need to be children of light, no longer living as people of the world.

Paul says, “Put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires…and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”

In other words, say “No!” to the Church of Nicolas.
