The hillside adjacent to Highway 5 North shows evidence of excessive soil instability due to a large amount of water runoff. At least 22 people from eight homes in a rural area of Kamloops have been evacuated since April 27 as state of local emergency was declared due to fears of a landslide. Work to stabilize the mountain has been successful and residents are expected to be able to return home on Friday after three weeks away from their residences.

Nearly two-dozen Rayleigh residents evacuated three weeks ago after the hillside above their houses began to slide will be allowed to return home on Friday morning.

Tammy Robertson, the city’s

emergency operations information officer, said an evacuation order in place for residents of Ramage Road will be lifted at 8 a.m., allowing 22 people to return.

Residents were evacuated on April 27 over fears of a landslide after the hillside above them became saturated due to a combination of rainy spring weather

and a stream that was feeding more moisture into the hillside.

The city has since installed a flat pipe to divert the stream and the hillside’s movement has slowed from about eight inches per day to about two millimetres.

“That prompted the ability for the residents to return,” Roberrtson said.

“We don’t see any imminent threat.”

Robertson said the pipe will remain in place for the near future.

The city, Emergency Management B.C. and the provincial Ministry of Transportation are continuing to look for a long-term solution to stabilize the hill.

Persistent high waters and wet weather are creating new habitat for mosquitoes as crews struggle with conditions.

Cheryl Phippen of BWP Consulting said Thursday crews started treatments behind schedule due to the late onset of spring.

They recently treated areas south of Aberdeen and Pineview Valley, as well as around Knutsford, Pinantan and Pritchard.

The program is funded through the Thompson-Nicola Regional District.

It uses a larvacide that is non-toxic to fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and most other insects, according to the regional district.

Phippen said a major challenge is the amount of surface water this year, areas that can harbour larvae.

“You’re walking across the grasslands and there’s just water coming out of the ground,” she said.

Those same conditions created slide-risk conditions in Rayleigh and a lengthy evacuation of a handful of properties.

Phippen said helicopter-based treatment is scheduled over the next few days on the North and South Thompson rivers.

Crews treat shallow areas when the rivers crest and then recede, allowing larvae to hatch. Every time the river peaks higher and recedes again, the same treatment must be done.

Robson Rogan, an agrologist with Purity Feeds, said the late spring has also meant later growth of noxious weeds.

The wet conditions are expected to lead to weed growth and their spread.

“With all the rain and unprecedented moisture and now with the heat, everything’s going to bolt with invasive weeds,” Rogan said.

Those include knapweed and sulphur cinquefoil.

Rogan said he has also noticed a large influx of ticks this season, backed up by conversations from ranchers and large animal vets.

On the deer trails, he said, “they’re just waiting to hitch a ride. I’ve really been getting people to check themselves.”

Mobility by carts on village streets will be a reality next month in Chase.

On June 5, revised provincial regulations will allow approved golf carts to once again operate within the village.

“We’ve done what we need to do,” said Mayor Rick Berrigan.

The day will mark the second time carts will wheel around Chase.

Then-transportation minister and Kamloops-South Thompson

MLA Todd Stone announced a two-year pilot program last summer to allow properly equipped golf carts on residential streets in Chase and Qualicum, a town on Vancouver Island.

Motor Vehicle Act regulations were amended to allow the program to proceed.

But the Ministry of Transportation soon put a freeze on the program after residents expressed unhappiness due to the reduced 30 km/h speed limit for all motor vehicles that accompanied the new rules for golf carts.

A compromise was found

that would restrict vehicles to 30 km/h only when passing a cart.

“There’s a lot of support,” Berrigan said.

Drivers must be licensed and insured; carts must be equipped with seat belts, horn, lights, signals and a rear-view mirror.

They can only operate during the day.

Chase’s mayor declined to guess how many units will be on the village’s roads this year, but allowed that he may join the fleet eventually.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Berrigan said. “The investment is the big part of it.”

That charge was stayed when Grageda agreed to enter into a peace bond for fear of a sexual

offence of a person under 16.

Grageda’s peace bond will be in effect for the next 12 months, but he is expected to leave the country before that term is complete.

Grageda is affiliated with the order Servants of the Risen Christ, which runs an operation at Immaculate Heart of Mary Shrine and Centre in Cache Creek.

B.C. Liberal Leader Christy Clark said she is willing to work with anyone to improve things for residents.

B.C. Green Andrew Weaver has said the same.

B.C. NDP Leader John Horgan said he will work with the Greens to replace Clark.

More than a week after the provincial election, all three parties are delicately beginning negotiations to find common ground in a minority legislature that may remain after the final count is known on May 24.

Weaver said his party’s three seats will be pivotal, even if absentee ballots swing the result in Courtenay-Comox in favour of the B.C. Liberal candidate who trails the NDP candidate by nine votes.

A bare majority of 44 seats would still leave Clark with a minority because neither opposition party is likely to nominate a speaker and give up a voting MLA. Horgan said his discussions with the B.C. Liberals haven’t gone beyond the courtesy call stage,

noting his staff is speaking only with B.C. Green staff.

The two parties’ positions on increasing the carbon tax before the B.C. Liberals are similar and both are opposed to Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion.

“I believe the 170,000 ballots still to be counted will confirm more or less the outcome that

we’ve got now,” Horgan told reporters at the legislature.

“And I believe that, working with the other opposition party, we can come up with a resolution that will meet the interests of all British Columbians.”

Weaver said one of his party’s foundational principles is voting by proportional representation and he will seek that in any co-

operation deal.

Clark said she supported electoral reform in her days as a radio talk show host, but her government has made no move to promote that since two referendums failed during Gordon Campbell’s time as premier.

Meanwhile, the NDP launched a petition campaign Wednesday asking British Columbians to show

support for a proportional voting system and a ban on corporate and union donations to political parties.

Clark denied a report this week that she has started making changes to her government’s preelection budget to accommodate the Greens.

No changes can be made until the final seat total is known, she said.

Clark has said that with the largest share of the popular vote and the most seats, the B.C. Liberals expect to have the first opportunity to call the legislature back and govern.

If the government loses a confidence vote on a budget or money supply that currently is in place only until this fall, the NDP may be called upon to form a government.

If neither can hold a majority on important votes, B.C. would be on the way to another election.

Prepare for a byelection

I

t appears we will, after all, have a byelection later this year to select a new mayor and at least two councillors.

Whether we need to have a byelection little more than a year from going to the polls in the general municipal election (Oct. 20, 2018) remains a debate that will rage, but there certainly were unforeseen circumstances that arose in council chambers this week that all but cemented the reality of a byelection.

Marg Spina’s sad news that her cancer is not curable and that she needs to spend time fighting it with all she has means she cannot continue to serve as a councillor.

Spina is dealing with something far more important than any issue on any council agenda and has said she will resign.

While Spina can follow Mayor Peter Milobar’s lead and take an extended leave of absence (her appearance at Tuesday’s council meeting was her first since taking a medical leave of absence as of Jan. 1 to deal with her breast cancer diagnosis), she told reporters she will ultimately need to quit and does not relish the thought of getting paid while not working.

While extending her leave of absence indefinitely would theoretically accomplish what a resignation would without the $100,000-plus cost of a byelection, the decision is Spina’s to make, just as the decision was Milobar’s to make when he was elected MLA on May 9.

To question her on the decision to resign at the end of June, as was done at Tuesday’s council meeting, was cringeworthy to watch.

No, we do not need a byelection to fill the mayor’s chair, as I have argued repeatedly.

But when Spina’s dire situation was revealed, the debate changed drastically.

Milobar made a decision to leave council.

Spina did not.

Considering all that has transpired this week, it is only right that Spina follow through on her plan to resign at the end of June and focus on what she needs to do.

Milobar could then do likewise and residents and council would have certainty going forward — that a new mayor and at least two new councillors (assuming Ken Christian follows through on his declaration that he will seek the chair) will be welcomed in the fall.

Arjun Singh was chosen by his peers to sit as deputy mayor until the situation is sorted out.

That appointment came with an unofficial agreement that he not run for mayor in the next election (byelection or general) lest he gain an unfair advantage.

Spina also raised a salient point

when discussing her future on council and the possible need for a byelection.

She pointed to her roles on various committees and boards — in particular the Southern Interior Local Government Association — noting some have not been filled by other councillors.

It is at such meetings that lobbying for funding and other requests is done, Spina said, arguing a diluted council will only hurt Kamloops when it is competing with other communities for such funding requests.

If Spina and Milobar resign, council will be reduced to seven from nine. It is not a dramatic plummet as it will equal the number of councillors in other cities in B.C. some larger and some smaller.

But with each absence — Christian will be away on regional district business later this month and Pat Wallace will be off for a couple of weeks in June due to surgery — the need for other councillors to be available heightens.

The legislation governing civic elections (section 54 of the Local Government Act) states that once a vacancy occurs (in this case, if Spina and Milobar resign as of June 30), council appoints a chief election officer, who then must set a general voting day for the election no later than 80 days after the date the chief election officer was appointed.

The same legislation states the bylaw governing the byelection must be adopted at least 42 days before the first day of the nomination period for the vote, which puts us into September.

EXPERTS HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT AJAX MINE Editor: The B.C. Environment Assessment Office has posted new information from government scientists regarding the KGHM Ajax proposal to operate an open-pit mine on the edge of Kamloops.

The experts express serious concerns about the possible effects on our air, water and groundwater. One of the primary concerns of Kamloops Physicians for a Healthy Environment has been air quality.

In his review, air quality meteorologist Ralph Adams states: “. . . there is still large uncertainty in the model output. I am unable to supply upper bounds for the uncertainty except to say that it is larger than the accepted factor of two that is used for the Calpuff model.”

He goes on to state: “In my opinion, the uncertainty in the model output for Ajax is far larger due to the uncertainty in the emission factors than that due to the dispersion model.”

So, if you cannot define these emission factors more clearly, the output by the mine operation could be much higher than predicted.

Models have uncertainties, as Kamloops Physicians for a Healthy Environment has been saying all through the stages of this application.

They are not studies of a working mine, but

mathematical predictions.

The review also states KGHM has not accounted for the likelihood that dust production will be different in the summer and the winter, during blasts and while piling waste rock.

These differences mean we still do not have good information about what could be produced by the proposed mine.

Adams points out air quality objectives have been written based on 24-hour averages because most monitoring data is reported in that format.

But he is careful to state: “This does not mean that there is not a health effect due to shorter periods of high concentrations, but that scientific studies are not yet able to evaluate it.”

This is why we have to pay attention to shortterm changes in weather conditions that could lead to spikes of air pollution in the city.

KGHM Ajax has assumed “. . . that the suppression of dust on the haul roads will never fall to less than 90 per cent.”

However, Adams states that “. . . neither I nor my colleagues at Environment Canada agree that the study supplies adequate evidence that 90 per cent dust mitigation can be maintained in the conditions expected at the proposed Ajax mine.”

He goes on to say a reduction to 80 per cent dust mitigation would result in double the emissions.

The review explains it is not certain the company can actually achieve the 90 per cent target as it has not been demonstrated it can do this in a dry environment like the one in which we live.

In the summary, Adams states: “Short-term dust events are likely to occur under dry summer conditions. These are common at other mines and similar facilities. It is unlikely that these events will have a significant effect on air quality statistics as they are so short-lived, but they will be noticeable and are considered a significant nuisance by the public.”

This information is important for Kamloops residents who have been assured there will be no impact by the mining company.

We strongly urge everyone to read these documents to learn what the Ministry of the Environment experts have to say about the KGHM application — and then draw their own conclusions.

PURSUIT OF LNG INDUSTRY A DANGEROUS EFFORT Editor: Although the B.C. government advertises its plan to export LNG (liquified natural gas) as an economic goldmine, the Council of Canadians suggests it will be more of a risk than a reward.

Fracking is a process in which sand, water and toxic chemicals are blasted into shale or coal beds under high pressure, creating cracks in the rock that allow gas to flow up the well.

The fracked gas would be transported by pipelines to terminals along the B.C. coast, where it would be transformed into LNG in huge refrigeration plants through a supercooling process. Mega tanks of over 300 meters in length would then carry it to Asia.

The fracking process is expensive, 2.5 times than that of typical gas. However, LNG requires relatively few workers, meaning fewer jobs and less local

economic development.

By 2020, the carbon pollution from LNG could equal three-quarters of the amount produced by the tar sands, which would be more than twice B.C.’s current levels of greenhouse gas emissions.

If nine of 10 proposed wells were fracked, about 580 billon litres of water would be contaminated.

More than 600 chemicals used in fracking have links to cancer, mutations and impacts to immune, car-

diovascular, and nervous systems.

The construction and operation of LNG terminals being considered for Lelu and Ridley Islands (sensitive areas for Skeena salmon) could be the tipping point for the secondlargest wild salmon run in Canada.

Could they recover from this very real hazard?

Our government needs to seriously reconsider.

ALL ABOUT GRIP PRESSURE Exactly how tightly are you holding on to your golf grip? It may seem like a minor detail, but grip pressure can have major implications on your golf swing. There is no need to have a white-knuckle grip on the golf club. Tension in your hands and forearms often leads to hitting weak fades. Imagine trying to throw a ball while holding it tightly – it would be very difficult! The golf swing is no different. Try to keep your hands and arms soft to allow for a more powerful release of the wrists, which in turn leads to more distance and often a square club face. Rather than squeezing tightly, gain control of the club with good position of your hands. The grip should sit snuggly in your fingers and less in the palm of your hand. It’s also a good time evaluate if you’re gripping tightly just because your grips themselves are slippery. Ideally you should hold tight enough that the club won’t go flying, be loose enough that your hands aren’t sore and you are able to relax your arms. It is imperative your arms can relax somewhat to hit strong, straight shots.

Chris Cornell had become one of the most lauded and respected contemporary lead singers in rock music, thanks to his charismatic energy onstage and wide vocal range.

He was a leader of the grunge movement with Seattle-based Soundgarden — with whom he gained critical and commercial acclaim — but also found success outside the band with other projects, including Audioslave, Temple of the Dog as well as solo albums.

His death Wednesday night stunned his family and his diehard fans, for whom Cornell had performed hours earlier at Detroit’s Fox Theatre.

The city’s medical examiner said in a preliminary autopsy result Thursday that the 52-year-old singer killed himself by hanging. A police spokesman told two Detroit newspapers the singer was found with a band around his neck.

Soundgarden’s current tour kicked off in late April and was planned to run through May 27.

Cornell was widely respected in the music industry: He reached success in every band lineup he was part of it, his voice was memorable and powerful and he was a skilled songwriter, even collaborating on a number of film soundtracks, including the James Bond theme song for 2006’s Casino Royale and The Keeper from the film Machine Gun Preacher, which earned Cornell a Golden Globe nomination.

“To create the intimacy of an acoustic performance, there needed to be real stories,” Cornell said of songwriting in a 2015 interview with the Associated Press.

“They need to be kind of real and they need to have a beginning, middle and an end. quitting drugs by the time I was 14 and then not having any friends until the time I was 16,’’ he told Rolling Stone in 1994.

“There was about two years where I was more or less agoraphobic and didn’t deal with anybody, didn’t talk to anybody, didn’t have any friends at all.

“All the friends that I had were still [messed] up with drugs and were people that I didn’t really have anything in common with.’’

But at 16, he grew serious about music, learning to play the drums while also working as a busboy and dishwasher.

“That was the toughest time in my life,’’ he told Rolling Stone.

He eventually became a Grammy winner with Soundgarden, formed in 1984 and coming out of the rapidly growing Seattle music scene, which included Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains.

The band, which had released hit songs and found success, marked a mainstream breakthrough with Superunknown, its 1994 album that launched five singles, won them two Grammys and sold more than five-million units in the U.S. The group, formed with guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto, broke up in 1997.

The band released three albums in six years. Audioslave disbanded in 2007, but Cornell and Soundgarden reunited in 2010 and released the band’s sixth studio album, King Animal, in 2012.

Cornell referenced death — and suicide — in a 2007 interview with the AP when discussing his single, No Such Thing. It appeared on his second solo album, Carry On. “The ‘no such thing as nothing’ line comes from the concepts that humans don’t really have a flat line until we’re dead,” he said.

“If we are not leading a happy, productive life, we are leading probably an unhappy, non-productive life.

“If a person doesn’t have enough food, they actually are hungry. If they don’t have enough money, it’s not that they have no money, they actually have something and it’s called poverty.

“There’s no just kind of flat lining coasting. You’re either going in one direction or in another direction. All that came out of me trying to imagine why somebody would be, for example, a suicide bomber.’’

Mom of teen gunman: We’re victims, too MEADOW LAKE, Sask. — The mother of a teen gunman who killed four people at a home and a school in northern Saskatchewan said the shooter’s family members are victims, too.

The woman told her son’s sentencing hearing that no one put him up to the crime.

She said she is not a bad mother and the family has forgiven the teen for what she called “this horrible crime.’’

The teen has pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of seconddegree murder and seven

counts of attempted murder in connection to the shooting in La Loche in January 2016.

A sentencing hearing is underway to determine if the teen — who was just shy of his 18th birthday at the time and can’t be named — should be sentenced as a youth or an adult.

The defence has said there is no simple reason behind the shooting and little about the motive has been made clear so far at the hearing.

Teacher Adam Wood and teacher’s aide Marie Janvier were killed and seven others were hurt at the school.

Two brothers, Dayne and Drayden Fontaine, were killed at the home.

Court has heard statements from the teen’s victims, asking for him to be sentenced as an adult.

It has also watched hours of video from the police interview with the shooter, in which he says he never felt bullied and couldn’t say what his goal was when he went to the school.

GLOBAL VIEWS In Iran, it’s President Hassan Rouhani’s promises to improve the economy versus hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi, whose campaign is focused on the fact the end of foreign economic sanctions did not bring Iranians the rapid economic relief Rouhani had promised.

Iranians go to the polls FIRST ROUND OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

T

he six-week campaign is over and 55-million Iranians will vote in the first round of the presidential election on Friday.

Or rather, most of those 55-million people will vote, but many will not because there is great disillusionment with President Hassan Rouhani’s promises to improve the economy — and therefore also with the international treaty on curbing Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions that was supposed to bring back prosperity.

U.S. President Donald Trump (who calls the treaty “one of the worst deals ever signed”) is not alone in seeing it as a failure.

Although Rouhani’s main challenger in this election, hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi, does not formally reject the deal, his entire campaign is focused on the fact the end of foreign economic sanctions did not bring Iranians the rapid economic relief Rouhani had promised Iran has a big, middle-income economy with a large industrialized sector.

But largely because of those sanctions, it has been in the doldrums for the past decade. Incomes have stagnated or fallen, youth unemployment is at 26 per cent and many people have lost faith in Rouhani.

Forty-three per cent of Iranians “strongly approved” of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as the deal is called, when it was signed two years ago.

Today, only 21 per cent “strongly approve.”

WATCH Yet nothing has actually changed with the deal. Rouhani’s problem is that nothing much has changed in the economy, either.

The Western partners in the JCPOA, the so-called Five plus One (the United States, Russia, Britain, Germany, France and the European Union) have been slow to remove the sanctions, mainly because of footdragging in Washington — although the U.S. government was quick enough to grant a waiver when Boeing wanted to sign a big deal to sell 80 passenger aircraft to Iran Air last December.

The bigger problem for Iran is that major international banks have been reluctant to re-engage with the country because they fear being caught out if the U.S. reneges on the deal and reimposes sanctions.

So, the Iranian economy continues to bump along the bottom and a lot of people who voted for Rouhani last time say they will sit this election out.

Raisi is capitalizing on this disillusionment by running a populist campaign promising “work and dignity.”

He is thought to have the tacit backing of Iran’s Supreme

Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is the final authority in Iran’s peculiar blend of democracy and theocracy.

Khamenei has not given his public backing to any candidate in this election (there are also two less well-known candidates running for the presidency).

It is generally assumed, however, that he supports Raisi, who is best known as one of the four Islamic judges who ordered the execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.

As a result, Raisi is doing well with his target audiences, the poor, the devout and the illeducated.

If they turn out to vote in large numbers, while more urban, more sophisticated voters express their disappointment with Rouhani’s failure to work miracles by staying home, it is entirely possible Raisiwill beat Rouhani and become the next president.

This would plunge the country’s relations with the West back into the deep freeze, but Raisi says he doesn’t care about that.

Iran doesn’t need outside help and his goal is to restore the values of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

But it certainly wouldn’t improve Iran’s prospects for prosperity or the entire region’s prospects for peace.

Rouhani is trapped between two fires in this election.

At home he faces a conservative backlash that condemns his opening to the West and (implicitly) his nuclear deal.

On election day, the

voters who might come out to support him are likely to hear Trump just across the Gulf in Saudi Arabia, spouting anti-Iranian rhetoric to a summit meeting of Arab countries.

It’s not just Trump.

Hillary Clinton, while giving the nuclear deal her tepid approval, was just as negative about Iran in general, and Barack Obama regularly recited the misleading mantra about Iran being the “leading state sponsor of terrorism,” as did his predecessors in the U.S. presidency all the way back to Ronald Reagan.

Iran is no worse than many of America’s allies in the region (and better than some) in its treatment of its own citizens.

It is no more prone to interfering in its neighbours than they are.

Yet it is routinely treated by U.S. administrations of both parties as a rogue state that poses a huge and unique threat to the peace of the Middle East Why? Because it defied the United States and got away with it.

The Iranian Revolution of 1979 overthrew Washington’s puppet ruler, the shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and just as in the case of Fidel Castro’s revolution in Cuba, the United States has never forgiven it for that crime.

Whereas by now Iranians have more or less forgiven the U.S. for the CIA-backed coup in 1953 that destroyed Iranian democracy and gave the shah supreme power in the first place. gwynnedyer.com

I

t might be way over the top to call Scott Pineo the man behind the man bun, but he certainly was in KO’s corner for the Game 7 knockout punch.

An electrician who often works in northern B.C., Pineo admits to living vicariously through his boyhood friend turned superstar Kelly Olynyk, the sevenfoot Boston Celtics’ forward who scored a career-playoff-high 26 points in his team’s series-clinching victory over the Washington Wizards at the TD Garden on Monday.

But this isn’t the story of a groupie who rides the famous friend’s coat tails. (Well, maybe that’s part of it, but the relationship is no one-way street).

“I remember Grade 7, halfway through the year, this tall, weird-looking kid comes into the class,” Pineo said, recalling yesteryear at Pacific Way elementary in Kamloops.

“My parents taught us well, to be nice to everybody. I was like, this kid looks weird and probably no one is going to talk to him.

I asked him how it was going and then we were science-fair partners and teammates on the elementary school basketball team.

It blossomed from there.”

The science fair-borne chemistry (their project didn’t win, “but it damn well should have,” Pineo said) reached a boiling point on Monday, the morning after Pineo had a dream in which he was giving a motivational speech to Olynyk, inspiring him to play in Game 7 against Washington like he did two years ago for Canada versus Venezuela.

The Canadians lost that day, a demoralizing 79-78 defeat in the semifinals of the FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico City that kept them from qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games.

But the South Kamloops secondary graduate poured in 34 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, a clutch performance in a mammoth game.

Pineo relayed his revery to Olynyk in a FaceTime conversation a few hours before tipoff at the Boston Garden on Monday, trying to find the words he dreamed up the night before.

“Your team is going to need you for Game 7,” Pineo told Olynyk, who he frequently travelled to see in Spokane when the long-locked big fella was starring with the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

“You’ve got to be there for them.

Whatever they need you to do, you’ve got to do. Step up and make big plays because this is your future, too.”

Olynyk, set to become a restricted free agent this summer, was tracked down on Monday night by TNT sideline reporter David Aldridge.

How was he able to harness the Game 7 pressure?

“A friend called me this morning and told me, ‘The thing you’ve got to be is be at your best when your best is needed,’” Olynyk said, referencing Pineo and deflecting compliments after netting 12 points in a three-and-a-half minute span in the fourth quarter to wax the Wizards.

“Our best was needed tonight and every-

body gave it their best and it turned out for us.”

That run of fourth-quarter brilliance spurred a racket at Pineo’s parents’ house, sporadic verbal outbursts and a foundation-shaking rumpus.

“My parents were downstairs. I had to take the wooden table and move it far away from me so I could have more space. I couldn’t handle it,” Pineo said. “I thought I was going to have a heart attack.”

The win was retribution, a put-that-inyour-pipe-and-smoke-it moment for Pineo, who has taken personally recent accusations that Olynyk is a dirty player who lacks talent.

“It’s hard. It’s super hard. It’s frustrating,” Pineo said “You can’t do anything about it. I tell him, like anyone else would say, you’ve got people back here who care about you.

“He says back to me, ‘That’s true. You won’t grow as a person or a player if you dwell on that stuff.’”

Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors fuelled the conversation, publicly criticizing Olynyk for a hard screen on Kelly Oubre of the Wizards in Game 3.

“I mean, I know he’s not like the greatest basketball player of all time, so maybe you feel like you got to like do that, but you don’t like – just dirty,” Green said.

Neither that incident nor Olynyk’s arm bar on Kevin Love, an altercation that left the Cleveland Cavaliers’ forward with a separated shoulder and forced him out of the 2015 playoffs, has tainted Pineo’s view of No. 41.

“No, he’s definitely not dirty,” Pineo said.

“Far from it. Kevin Love is made of glass.

And with this whole Kelly Oubre thing, they were talking all that smack. I needed him to win that series just so they could put it right back on them.”

Tuesday marked Day 102 of the OlynykPineo Snapchat Challenge. They’re going strong after deciding to send each other at least one snap a day — cute.

When KTW caught up with Pineo on Tuesday, he was boarding a flight to Montreal, en route to Boston.

He was at the Garden on Wednesday when the Celtics played host to Love, LeBron James and the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the NBA Eastern Conference final.

Cleveland dominated the game and Olynyk — who had two points on six shots in 16 minutes in Game 1, which ended in a 117-104 defeat — was among the Celtics victimized by James, who had 38 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in 42 minutes on the court.

Late in the first quarter, James turned his back to Olynyk and dribbled between his own legs before squaring up and driving hard to the hoop to score.

TNT analyst Reggie Miller said James is “clowning out here,” and Celtics’ coach Brad Stevens later said there is no obvious way to guard the Cavs’ superstar, but they will try to do better Friday at the Garden, with Game 2 tipoff slated for 5:30 p.m.

Olynyk footed the bill for Pineo’s flight on Tuesday, just as he did when Pineo flew to Chicago to celebrate his 26th birthday. The birthday boy watched the Celtics eliminate the Bulls at the United Centre in Game 6 of their first-round series on April 28.

“Best birthday present ever,” Pineo said.

The Thompson Rivers University student took the team bus back to the hotel in the Windy City that night and followed the Celtics to Boston for Games 1 and 2 of the secondround series against the Wizards.

He was in Beantown to watch Isaiah Thomas’ heroics against Washington in Game 2 on May 2, when the Celtics’ point guard netted 53 points on what would have been his sister’s birthday.

Chyna Thomas died in a car accident in Washington state on April 15. She was 22.

“It was insane,” Pineo said, recalling the atmosphere in the Garden that night.

“That’s the only way to put it.”

the milestone with Pineo, who paid his own way to Boston to catch the Celtics’ last two regular-season tilts and first two games of Round 1 against Chicago.

They dined at a fancy steakhouse.

“We were out for dinner and these people said, ‘Oh, what’s the occasion?” Pineo said.

“Kelly told them it was my birthday, when it was actually his.

“They came back with these s’more marshmallows that said happy birthday written in chocolate on the plate. They sang happy birthday to me.”

There are others like Pineo, longtime friends of Olynyk revelling in what is the most incredible period of his career to date.

“He certainly gravitates to that type of outlet, friends who have been friends for a while,” said Kelly’s mom, Arlene. “Scott is certainly one of those people.

“They’ve stayed so grounded. They get together and eat tacos and play video games. It could be in Kamloops or New York.

They’re the same goofy, Snapchat-story guys they always have been.”

It’s a contract year for Olynyk, whose stock grew on Monday like the fame of his man bun, which TNT analyst Charles Barkley threatened to cut off in post-game coverage, entertaining television which catapulted the Kamloops kid’s celebrity.

And a contract year for Olynyk is kind of like a contract year for Pineo, the man-bun whisperer who will happily travel the continent to share in his big buddy’s dream.

“We’ve talked this year more than other years,” Pineo said. “I’m not sure why. But, wow, it’s pretty cool.”

For the first time, the Kamloops Minor Baseball Association will host a Victoria Day Long weekend tournament on McArthur Island.

And with 400 players across five age groups

“It’s nice just to get away from league play for a bit, get into tournament play where every game counts so you’re facing those sorts of elements, and it’s nice just to be doing it

Wandler, who is also the manager of the AAA RiverDogs, said the tournament is a bit of an unknown for his team — the five other AAA clubs that will be in Kamloops play in B.C.

Baseball’s Midget AAA League, a step below the RiverDogs’ College Prep League.

“You always want to compete every time you go out,” Wandler said when asked if he expects his team to finish on the podium at the Classic.

“But we also see this, too, as a good opportunity for a development

THEFT FROM AN ELECTRONICS STORE This thief is in for a surprise when he finds out he has been caught on the store’s security camera system. This male entered an electronics store in the North Hills Mall on Wednesday, May 3rd. This suspect took his time looking around the store. When the staff were busy, he grabbed a couple of items and walked out of the store without making any attempt to pay for the items.

This suspect can not be that smart as to steal from a store that sells video security systems

to other retail stores and private residences.

VEHICLE THIEF The Police would like to know who this person is? This suspect was seen driving a vehicle that had been stolen early in the morning of Thursday, April 20th from Barnhartvale. The vehicle has been recovered at the Gateway Travel centre on the East Trans Canada highway; the RCMP forensic section will be looking at the vehicle for evidences.

but did not take the stolen vehicle and his direction of travel is unknown. The male is described as Caucasian, early 30’s short dark hair, tall and at the time was wearing a dark grey hoodie, with light grey sleeves and black sweat pants with grey stripes. Let’s catch this suspect before he takes another vehicle!

The peewee Kamloops RiverDogs Team 2 posted two ties and a loss on the diamond on the weekend.

In an 11-11 tie against Comba 2 on Saturday, Dayton McKelvey had a triple in the first inning and Layne Waugh was pivotal in a double-play in the second inning.

In an 11-1 trouncing of Victoria on Saturday, Luke Petrie did not allow a run in five innings of work on the mound and Carter Sauer batted in three runs.

Mitchell Coxon pitched four good innings in a 5-3 win over Victoria in the rematch, racking up seven strikeouts and allowing only two hits.

Nolan Austin had two RBI. Chilliwack bested Kamloops 8-5 on Sunday, but the Dogs bounced back with a 10-2 victory in the rematch.

OTTAWA — Matt Cullen could hardly find the words to describe the Pittsburgh Penguins’ performance Wednesday night in a 5-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

With the win the Senators took a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Final. Game 4 is Friday in Ottawa, with puckdrop set for 5 p.m.

“Bottom line is there’s no excuses here, we all know it, we didn’t play well,’’ Cullen said.

“To be able to say that right now in the conference finals is pretty hard to stomach.’’

The Senators jumped out to a 4-0 first-period lead by the 12:52 mark and never looked back.

Sidney Crosby broke Craig Anderson’s shutout bid scoring a third-period power-play goal. It was Crosby’s first

point of the series.

“It was a bad start,’’ said Crosby. “You don’t want to get down at any point, but to get down 4-0 is digging a pretty big hole.’’

Crosby and the Penguins don’t need to look far for experience on how to bounce back. They did just that in the conference semifinal against Washington after losing Game 6 and went on to win Game 7.

“You’ve got to learn from it either way, however way it shakes out whether you lose in double overtime or have the kind of game we had,’’ said Crosby. “You have to learn from it. We have to find another level here.’’

Marc-Andre Fleury, who’s been impressive through Pittsburgh’s playoff run, was chased from Game 3 after allowing the four first-period goals.

He was replaced by Murray, who made his first appearance in goal since April 6.

Murray looked solid allowing one goal on 20 shots.

Fleury has no idea whether or not he’ll start Friday, but is hopeful to get the start.

“We knew they were going to come out hard and that’s what they did,’’ Fleury said.

“They scored one and took the momentum and got the crowd in it and then had some favourable bounces and that was the difference.’’

Sullivan said he hasn’t given any thought to his starting goalie. He just knows his team needs to do better in Game 4.

“I just think we’ve got to be more ready to play from the drop of the puck,’’ said Sullivan.

“I think when you give up a goal that early in the game against a team that’s playing at home it gives that team a lot of energy. I think we have to be ready right from the start of the puck and we simply have to be better.’’

Soccer divers targeted in England LONDON — English soccer is introducing retrospective bans of at least two matches for players who deceive referees by diving to win a penalty or feign injury to get an opponent sent off.

English Football Association officials voted on Thursday to introduce a new offence of “successful deception of a match

official’’ from next season, emulating a law already applied in the Scottish game.

A panel featuring a former match official, ex-manager, and former player will review footage of incidents and have to unanimously agree to charge offenders. This process is similar to the one already used for red-card offences that were missed at the

time but caught on camera.

The FA said this will be enforced “where there is clear and overwhelming evidence to suggest a match official has been deceived by an act of simulation, and as a direct result, the offending player’s team has been awarded a penalty and/or an opposing player has been dismissed.’’

hile the Trudeau government makes plans to legalize marijuana, I have some good news — you can plant in pots and you won’t get arrested for it.

Container’ gardening, as it is more often referred to, is growing in popularity faster than people can move into high-rise condos in Toronto. And it isn’t just balcony gardeners who are planting up virtually everything that will hold soil. Patios, decks, front doors and walkways are enhanced with containers full of colour and food plants everywhere.

What are the secrets to growing successfully in containers?

Here they are: • Choose the right container: Whatever you choose to plant in, make sure it has adequate drainage for water to move through the soil and out the hole in the bottom efficiently. If plants sit in water, they rot, unless they are water plants, which really belong in a pond.

Where containers are concerned, the greater the soil mass, the better

the performance of the plants.

This is why I do not recommend the small 10-inch hanging baskets that are so tempting.

Large hangers at least 14 inches in diameter are so much better.

Potting up geraniums in your uncle’s old boots might be cute, but even his feet are not big enough to create a cavity for soil to sustain plant life very well.

A half-barrel sized container is much better. And no one wears halfbarrels on their feet.

• Choose the plants for the location of the container: If your container is in full blazing sun, be sure to plant sun-loving plants in it.

This is more important in containers than it is in the garden as the strength of the sun intensifies off the ground. Look for dwarf zinnias, asparagus fern (a member of the lily family), petunias, million bells, scabiosa, lobelia and the list goes on.

On the other hand, perennial hosta makes a great containerized plant in the shade or partial shade.

With a little care, it will come back each year, as will many other perennials.

tainers, placing it on the garden, where earthworms will pull it down and incorporate it into the soil. If you live in a condo, ask management if you can place it in the condo garden. Just don’t leave it in the container two years in a row. It is tired and the nutrients in it are used up.

But it is fine to spread over an established garden.

When looking for container mix, buy quality. You really get what you pay for. Choose a brand that you trust (maybe one with my name on it!). Quality soil drains well, is full of nutrients that help to boost plant life through the growing season and some mixes feature water-retaining

abilities that reduce the frequency of water applications.

• Water with the rain: Use a rain barrel to hold rain water and apply this to your container plants throughout the season. This is how I water all my containers and I believe it makes a world of difference.

Rain water is soft, is charged with oxygen and it is almost always warm, unlike tap water. If only plants could talk, they would tell us this is their preference. “I hate cold showers!” you would hear them roar.

Allow container soil to dry to the touch between watering applications. When water evaporates or

transpires through a plant, the space that it takes in the soil is replaced with oxygen-rich air. All plants love this. Some plants, like geraniums, prefer to get quite dry, but never bone dry. In time, you will learn what works best for you in your living situation.

•Fertilize: There are many options where plant food is concerned. The bottom line is containerized plants demand more nutrients than garden-bound plants as their roots are limited by the walls of the container and the volume of soil at their roots.

From several metres away, I can usually tell if a plant is hungry, especially late in the season when nutrients in the container mix have been used up.

Yellowing leaves, poorly performing flowers and a look of general malaise takes over a plant that is hungry.

Pondering and perusing pages of the Apocrypha

O

ne of more interesting aspects of Bible reading is comparing how different versions present the stories and spiritual wisdom of ancient Israel.

Being rather curious about all things biblical, I decided to read the Apocrypha.

The first four books are gathered in the “Historical Books” section along with Samuel, Kings, Chronicles, etc.

Other Christian traditions, such as the Coptic Church of Egypt and the Syriac Church of the East, include apocryphal writings not recognized by other branches of Christianity.

Examples would include Esdras, Jubilees, Psalms 151155 and Enoch.

The latter book is only recognized by the Eritrean and Ethiopian Orthodox churches as canonical, even though it is quoted in the Epistle of Jude.

Jude writes, “Enoch, seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men [the ungodly] . . .”

Allusions and quotations of noncanonical sources are not uncommon in the Bible. Paul, for example, quotes from several Greek authors.

ered canonical, there has to be widespread agreement among the apostolic fathers and theologians throughout the history of the Church for their inclusion.

The Book of Enoch simply did not make the cut for the majority of Christian traditions.

Generally, apocryphal books are considered acceptable for instruction and edification, but not for essential spiritual guidance.

One reason for their exclusion in Protestant tradition is that neither Jesus nor the other major epistle writers, such as Paul, Peter and James, make any mention of any of the books in the Apocrypha.

Nevertheless, they can provide some fascinating reading.

I’ve already written in this space about the book of Judith, a beautiful heroine who saves her people from certain destruction.

The story of the Maccabees can be rather gruesome in places, as it discusses the torture of the Maccabean

rebels after their capture. Nevertheless, it recounts an important period in the history of Israel.

The Book of Wisdom was written by a Jew in exile in Alexandria, Egypt, in about 100 B.C. He writes in rabbinic style, speaking with “the voice” of Solomon: “The breath is our nostrils is a smoke and reason is a spark at the beating of our hearts, and when this is quenched, our body will be ashes and our spirit will be poured abroad like unresisting air. Even our name will be forgotten in time, and no one will recall our deeds. So our life will pass away like the traces of a cloud, and will be dispersed like a mist pursued by the sun’s rays . . .”

It is quite reminiscent of the writing in Ecclesiastes, which has also been attributed to someone writing “after the tradition” of Solomon.

My favourite apocryphal book is the Book of Sirach, also called Ecclesiasticus.

It was written by Jesus ben Sirach, a sage living in Jerusalem between 200 and 175 B.C. One of the unusual features of Sirach is that his grandson wrote a foreword to the book giving details about his grandfather and the book itself.

Here is a small example, discussing the benefits of being careful in your choice of friends: “Let your

acquaintances be many, but one in a thousand your confidant. When you gain a friend, first test him and be not too ready to trust him. For one sort of friend is a friend when it suits him, but he will not be with you in time of distress. Another is a friend who becomes an enemy and tells of the quarrel to your shame. Another is a friend who will not be when sorrow comes . . . if you are brought low, he turns against you and avoids meeting you . . . A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a treasure.

A faithful friend is beyond price, no sum can balance his worth.”

Many believers have found wisdom and inspiration in the writings of Christian authors such as C.S. Lewis, William Barclay, Mother Teresa, Thomas á Kempis and others.

No one is claiming their writings are “God-breathed” Scripture.

The books of the Apocrypha, like them, are inspiring and useful for following the Christian path.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Shane Rio MacConnell Shane Rio MacConnell was ushered into Heaven by Jesus on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the age of 61.

Left to Celebrate his Life are his beloved wife Catherine, his children Tanya (Tony), Marissa (Devon), Justin (Karina) and his nine grandchildren Taylor, Lily, Owen, Bennett, Nixon, Harley, Caity, Deklan and Autumn.

Shane was born in Vancouver, BC to Rio (deceased) and Margaret, he was the oldest of five children: Shelley (Brian), Kim (Al), Lance and Vince (Bettina). Shane worked at Coast Paper in Vancouver, BC for 15 years where he met his bride, the love of his life, Catherine. From truck driver to framer to carpenter to jack of all trades, Shane spent his last years working for Highland Valley Copper Teck in Logan Lake, BC. Shane will always be remembered for his bear hugs, roaring laugh, piercing blue eyes and infectious smile. He loved cooking, fishing, hunting, camping, ATVing, and music, but most of all, spending time with his family and friends.

We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love people have shown us through kind words, messages, stories of Shane, food, offers of babysitting and mostly your prayers. Shane loved his Lord and Savior and it was evident in his life. He loved people without judging; he was able to show grace but never faltered from his beliefs. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren fiercely. He will be greatly missed.

Known as “Billie” to family and friends, mom left us peacefully to join her husband Donald of 62 years on May 16, 2017 at 93 years of age.

The family of Yvonne Lapin cordially invites friends and family to join in a Celebration of Yvonne’s Life on Saturday, May 27, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the home of Corinne and Brian Flamank at 2787 Capilano Drive, Kamloops, BC.

One of the 9 “Fahlman” girls, mom was born on March 26, 1924 to parents Elisabeth and Joseph. As a child, she moved to Kelowna with her family where she was raised and attended school. After completing her studies to become a teacher she began teaching at the one room school house in Turtle Valley. It was in the valley that she met one of the “Thomson” boys – Donald, who she would marry in April 1952. They settled in Kamloops in 1963 where she remained until her passing.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, husband, brother, five of her sisters and her son-in-law Dennis Lockie.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son Kelly and daughter Donna (Lockie), as well as the surviving “Fahlman” girls and “Thomson” boys: Kate, Helen and Pat, John, Allan and David. Billie is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the compassionate and caring staff of Ridgeview Lodge.

At mom’s request no service will be held.

A private interment of mom’s cremated remains will be held later this year when she will be laid to rest with her husband.

Walter Russell Dobell Walter Russell Dobell continued his journey surrounded by family on April 29, 2017 at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice in Kamloops, BC. Russ was born in Edmonton on September 28, 1941, he moved with his family to Courtenay at an early age and had many fond memories of the Island Community.

Predeceased by his parents Lester and Lita Dobell, sister Pat, brother-in-law Robert McDonald and niece Heather.

His contagious sense of humour and supportive manner will be sorely missed by Fran, his loving wife of 43 years and the family he embraced as his own. Survived also by his stepbrother Dave Dobell (Barb) and family, his nieces Lita and Erika McDonald.

A long-time employee of B.C. Tel (Telus), Russ enjoyed a varied career in Engineering at Kamloops, Vancouver, Prince George and prior to retirement, at the Education Center in Burnaby. The highlight of his career was his involvement with contracts in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia) and South East Asia. After retirement, Russ continued his telephone experience with contract positions in the U.S. and Canada.

A life-long learner, he enjoyed various endeavors, pilot, power boating, storm chasing, water colour paintings and skillfully crafted Model Ships. His spirit of adventure took him travelling in their 5th wheel and motorhome with Fran, throughout the U.S. and Eastern Seaboard.

With his health failing, Russ spent the last year at Chartwell Retirement Residence in North Kamloops.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the exceptional Staff and Volunteers at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice for their loving care to Russ and his family.

Alyce Scramstad (Mumple) Alyce Scramstad (Mumple) passed away peacefully on May 14, 2017 with her family by her side.

She was born in Bow Island, Alberta in 1927. She married her soul-mate Ray (Papa) in 1950 and together they had four children: Lorne (Anne), Norm (Lynne), Dory (Betty) and Debi (Rocky). Alyce was predeceased by Roy in 2010 and never a day went by that she didn’t miss him. Alyce also leaves behind nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren as well as numerous friends and caregivers.

James (Mickey) Nicholas Bleskie October 21, 1932 – May 16, 2017

James was born on October 21, 1932 in Jasper, Alberta, son of Nick and Katie Bleskie. He grew up in Lucerne, BC, Mount Robson Provincial Park. James worked for the Canadian National Railroad for nearly forty years.

He is survived by his wife Marion, daughter Valerie (John), son Leslie (Tracy), Serena and Christina (Lance), grandchildren Aaron, Jeremy, Karina, Candice, Cassidy, Carissa, Celestine and Nicholas, Kyle, Daniel and six great-grandchildren.

James was predeceased by his son Jamie and sister Lucie, Lilian and baby brother.

The Bleskie family thanks Doctor Azad and the caring hospital staff that took care of him. A special thank you to good friend Tom Cole and Anna.

The daughter of immigrant parents from Riga, Latvia, Klara was born in Noranda, Quebec in 1939. At age three, Klara moved with her parents and an older sister to Surrey, BC. The family initially settled in Sullivan before moving to a small farm in Whalley. The home in Whalley is where Klara and her four sisters Betty, Alma, Velta and Zelma - ‘the Zalit girls’ - spent their formative years.

At age 17, Klara met and soon married Don Hardman. Over 14 years of marriage, Klara and Don had two children Joanne and Gordon.

With retirement in hand, Klara moved to Kamloops to be closer to family. She loved living in Kamloops and more specifically having the opportunity to participate in her grandson Blair’s growing up. A beautiful bond of friendship developed between Klara and her grandson, a bond that remained strong to her last day.

In 2008, Klara experienced the greatest loss of her life, the passing of her beautiful daughter Joanne to cancer. Klara and her daughter had a close and wonderful relationship and the loss devastated Klara immensely.

Klara we will miss you and your wonderful, loving ways.

The family extends a thank you to the amazing staff at the Royal Inland Hospital, the Cancer Clinic and the Overlander Palliative Care. A special thanks to Dr.’s Van Herden and Proctor!

With her marriage ended, Klara shifted her focus to establish a lengthy career in the hotel and accommodation industry. Her best years in the business were at the Dell Hotel, where Klara was an efficient presence, working hard at the front desk. After 20 plus years at the Dell, she retired in 1996.

In 2009, Klara herself was diagnosed with a cancer. Between three separate bouts of battling her illness, Klara continued to bravely live the life she so loved in Kamloops: participating in family, social and sporting events, browsing the local markets for the best food deals and shopping at Nature’s Fare. She loved local!

Judy Budnyk February 18, 1950 - May 2, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Miss Judy Budnyk on May 2, 2017. On this day, we lost a wonderful lady! We will miss her beautiful smile, her laughter, the twinkle in her eye, her warm “hellos” and “hi honeys”, and of course her mischievious nature.

Judy was predeceased by her Mom Shirley and her Dad Onusrey [James].

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Doug and Gail Beamish. Judy was a lovely lady who had a full happy life and she was warmly welcomed wherever she went. She was a member of the Alliance Church and the Crown Jewels Society - the Kamloops chapter is called the Ravishing Rubies. Judy loved life, enjoyed music, going to concerts, her monthly dinner meetings with the Ravishing Rubies, Zumba classes at the YMCA and of course her finger knitting.

She will be sadly missed by her family, friends, her roomates –Deb, Andy and Launie and of course all her caregivers - both past and present. Judy you were admired, respected and loved and you always gave that back to us.

It will still be filled with music, rock stars and passion, but will include no instruments. At least no physical instruments.

The Air Guitar B.C. Championships is coming to Kamloops on Thursday, June 15.

The event began more than two decades ago in Finland.

“The guys in Finland, it was sort of a soft, passive protest,” Tim Evans, Air Guitar Canada organizer told KTW. “If you’re holding an air guitar, you can’t be holding a gun.”

The goal was to usher in world peace, one strum at a time — and the idea caught on, with events now held throughout Canada, the United States and featured in the documentary, Air Guitar Nation.

“The act is quite fun,” Evans said.

“For anyone who loves a particular song or who has played the air guitar almost impulsively, it touched on the performance element of that.”

The event expanded and came to Canada about a decade ago. It went dormant for a few years and was resurrected by Evans with a charitable angle.

Proceeds now benefit Right to Play, a charity helping kids displaced in war-torn regions to participate in sports and music.

Local event organizers are responsible for covering the costs of getting the winner to Toronto for the next round of the competition, which has already been fundraised by organizers Kara Sheen-Inferno and Arron Butowski of Infernol Art Productions.

“Any tickets that get sold, the

money is going to go to the charity,” Evans said. “They’ve already fundraised enough for the flight. Now it’s about getting people to raise the most possible money for the charity and the cause of world peace.”

From Toronto, the winner will go to the World Championships in Finland and travel expenses will once again be covered.

In the meantime, they’re looking for people to sign up to get on stage and strut their stuff, something Evans has experience with having gone all the way to Worlds a few years back.

“I didn’t do very well,” he said with a laugh, noting he didn’t take it seriously.

He has some advice, however, for anyone looking to take the stage.

“The big lesson was make sure you pull out all your big guns right off the bat,” he said.

The event consists of two rounds, but some don’t make it past the first, hence his advice.

Songs are shortened and performances are just a minute long. Some people do acrobatics, jump and even the splits depending on their physical agility.

“It’s like a sprint,” Evans said.

“They’re pretty exhausted [after].”

Registration in the 19-plus event is free. Spectator tickets purchased in advance cost $8 plus service charges.

Art battle finals a year in the making

hey came. They saw. They painted.

For months, Kamloops artists of all stripes have been battling in galleries and clubs around the city, attempting to wow crowds with acrylic paint and performance skills. On Thursday, June 1, winners and finalists from past competitions will come together once more to compete for a chance to represent Kamloops’ art scene on an even larger scale.

In a battle, artists are given about 20 minutes to create an acrylic painting in front of a live audience. While the contents of the painting count, dramatic brushwork and performance skills also play a role in capturing the win.

Familiarity with acrylics is not an entry requirement — competitors in Kamloops have ranged from oil painters to tattoo artists.

The final event, which wraps up about a year of competitions over seven events, will see 12 artists compete.

“We’ve had a winner from each of those events and we have a small group which we call our all stars,” explained Mike O’Brien, who organizes battles with wife Jenny.

“These folks maybe haven’t won a battle or an event day, but they have placed first in their round, they’ve gone on to a second round.

They’ve competed time and time again, and they have the skill and showmanship to play at the finals.”

There’s also a wildcard slot. Audience members can put their names forward to compete the night of the event, with one name randomly drawn to join the competition.

After three rounds of battling, Kamloops’ first overall winner will be awarded with an entry into the B.C. regional battle in Vancouver later that month. The victor of that event will go on

to a national competition in Toronto.

“They’re going to be competing against everyone else in the province, and then maybe everyone else in the country,” Mike said. “There are not a lot of opportunities for an artist to play on this kind of stage or compete on this kind of stage.”

For audience members, the event can also be a chance to snag local art at bargain prices.

“Some of the more celebrity in-town artists that come and compete, normally you’d pick up their pieces for $1,500 and they’re going for like $200,” Jenny said. “It’s an amazing opportunity to get out there and show your local artists you love them.”

With the wrapping of Kamloops Symphony Orchestra’s 40th season comes the end of Bruce Dunn’s tenure as conductor.

Dunn announced his retirement in 2015 and held the role with the local orchestra for 27 years.

KSO paid tribute to him on Saturday night with a new title — Music Director Emeritus — and announced the creation of an endowment fund in his name.

“He put in 27 years as music director of the Kamloops Symphony, he has done a lot of good for the organization,” KSO marketing co-ordinator Ryan Noakes told KTW. “We felt it was just a fitting way to honour everything he has done in the last 27 years.”

Saturday night’s performance also featured Martin MacDonald, the final candidate vying for Dunn’s job. Three other guest conductors performed with KSO throughout the season: Melanie Leonard, Leslie Dala and Dina Gilbert.

The process to replace Dunn is still underway. A selection committee made up of board members is expected to meet soon.

“We haven’t selected yet,” Noakes said.

“We don’t have a hard date of when that will be . . . . We’re hoping to have an announcement soon.”

milio Pagnotta was at work when he heard his song play on the radio for the first time.

“It makes you feel like a little kid for two seconds,” the 27-yearold lead guitarist of Echo Beach told KTW. It was a surprise to co-workers, but meant nearly two years of work coming to fruition for Pagnotta and his bandmates Mac Lefebvre (vocals, guitar), Russ Walton (bass, vocals) and Tanner Kerr (drums).

The Kamloops band is set to release its debut five-song EP on May 26 during a show at Pavilion Theatre, but its single 6000 Cats is already on the airwaves on 98.3 CIFM. “It makes you feel like you’re not wasting your time,” Pagnotta said.

The track has nothing to do with cats.

It is, in fact, about dealing with one’s circumstances, staying positive and withstanding pressure.

So, where do the cats come in?

“I’m not really sure, we just really like cats,”

Pagnotta said.

“This is pretty much the reaction we get every time.”

Pagnotta said felines are a theme throughout the band’s branding, among album artwork and to be featured in an upcoming video.

“We’ve got a cat problem,” Pagnotta said.

Meanwhile, their EP Everly was named after a human. They wanted the name to mean something, so they chose to name it after Lefebvre’s recently born niece.

Asked whether they’ll have to name future albums after

other family members, Pagnotta said: “We might just name every album some sort of cool girl’s name. We haven’t got that far.”

The group is inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan, but has a “surfer rock” sound to make it more fun to watch live, Pagnotta said. Lefebvre surfs, but he and Pagnotta also snowboard — which goes back to their musical roots.

“Our one buddy does snowboard videos for other friends who are really good snowboarders,” he said.

“He would make the snowboard video

and film us playing and then he’d mesh the two.”

Pagnotta said those who attend their EP launch can expect a live show that isn’t overly serious.

“We try to involve the audience and we’re not there to just show off or anything,” he said. “We’re there to have fun.”

The EP will be available on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify and Band Camp.

hirty kilometres from Keremeos and 2,000 meters skyward, awaits Cathedral Provincial Park and some of the most heavenly hiking you’ll find in B.C. The 33,000-hectare (80,000-acre) mountain wilderness is splashed with azure lakes, cloaked with alpine meadows and backed by some mighty majestic peaks.

“It’s like being on top of the world!” I exclaimed, as we took our final steps onto the rim trail where our panoramic sights included distant summits of the Northern Cascades and Coastal Range.

Although the vista was indeed a rewarding grand finale, the entertainment en route was equally uplifting.

goats, California bighorn sheep and large hoary marmots graced our rubble trail.

They united with cooing ptarmigans, chirping chickadees and timid whistling picas.

As well as exploring the massive rock formations of Stone City, we were in awe of the geological profile known as Smokey the Bear. With the offering of more than 36 bird species and 500 kinds of plants, the adventurous ascent was a feast for the senses Although you might think hoofing to such a heady elevation would be a quest considered by only serious mountaineers, thanks to the convenient location of Cathedral Lakes Lodge, at 2,050 meters, novice trekkers can partake.

The journey to this divine destination actually commences at the park’s base camp where, after a 22-kilometre scenic drive through the Ashnola Valley, high country seekers rise

1,200 meters via fourwheel transporters to the shimmering oasis of Quiniscoe Lake.

Thick stands of spruce, fir and larch enshroud the glistening gem and snowtipped peaks provide a breathtaking backdrop.

Campsites and varied accommodations sprawl the shoreline along with a Bavarian-style solar-heated lodge that hosts half a dozen guest rooms.

Here, a soothing hot tub offers therapeutic reprieve for strained and mountain-worn muscles, a fireside lounge entices game lovers and bookworms and three times a day the clanging dining gong stimulates some serious salivation.

Meals can be arranged upon reservation and the chef can satisfy even the heartiest alpine appetite.

Some of the buffet specialties during our stay included succulent

lamb delicately spiced with herbs, tender strips of beef prepared with a full-bodied curry and a lemon-garnished salmon, done to Epicurean perfection.

As well as serving home-baked granola, fresh fruit and yogurt, we had the option of a full morning feast of pancakes, bacon, eggs — the works — and lunches were arranged on a dine-in or take-outto-trek basis.

A myriad of trails, well-marked by stonepiled cairns, leads to a full range of hiking options and a chain of seven-linked lakes that possess their individual allure. While Lake of the Woods snuggles in the shade of sub alpine

greenery, the turquoise Ladyslipper sparkles against its rugged granite embankments.

Four of the wilderness wonders were well stocked with trout in the 1930s and today the natural spawning promises abundant angling rewards that vary from pan-sized cutthroat to trophy-sized rainbow.

Before escalating to what we coined the top of the world, we built our stamina by plodding the less arduous five-kilometre Diamond Trail. The green carpeted forest floor bordered our well-trod path and the interspersing of Indian paintbrush and sunshine yellow buttercups in the alpine meadows created a picture postcard setting.

Similar climbs can be explored by taking the trails that scoot off to Scout and Glacier lakes and the more advanced can be challenged by inclines like The Boxcar, Lakeview and Quiniscoe Mountain.

No matter the route, all naturalists will be swept away by the biodiversity and splendor.

The lower-level terrain is lush with stands of Douglas fir that thin out to outcroppings of Lodgepole pine.

Englemann spruce and sub-alpine fir gather around the lodge and the colourful alpine is abundant with Lyall’s larch, heather and lupines.

The operating season runs from June to mid-October and

ever-changing scenery evolves in each of its three stages.

Those who visit early will be smitten by snow-dusted trails and the blushing from new buds.

Mid-season guests will ogle over the blaze of wildflowers sweeping the alpine meadows and late-comers will awe when the entire landscape becomes aglow in golden autumn hues.

When it came time to leave, we too lingered on our treasured memories collected over our twoday stay and agreed that as well as feeling on top of the world, Cathedral Lakes Park was probably the closest place to heaven on earth. travelwriterstales.com
