A: If you feed a kibble only diet (especially a lower quality kibble) with limited water intake, the chances of your pet being dehydrated is vastly increased. Make sure the water dish is full of fresh cool water or supplement with canned food, goat’s milk, raw food or other options with more moisture.

What Makes a Great Dance School?

There are lots of extracurriculars these days for children. Dance is a great way to stay active and increase endurance, coordination, strength, flexibility, agility, confidence and expression. Life skills that will follow your young dancer into adulthood.

Because all parents want the best for their children, here are some things to consider when choosing the dance studio that will best fit your – and your child’s – needs.

• First call or email the studio and ask questions about what programs they have for the age group you are looking into.

• What are the fees? Are there fees in addition to the price of enrolment?

• How much are costumes and are there any other fees that come up throughout the season?

• What is the philosophy of the dance studio?

• Is it to teach children how to enjoy dance and build many life skills? Is it to offer a safe, fun and nurturing environment ? How do they feel about the competition side of dance ? What avenues are there for your child whether they choose to compete or not compete?

Does the studio recognize there is a path for recreational dancers as well?

Teachers

Your child’s dance instructors should be positive, professional and have dance experience . They should have a rapport with their students that promotes not only technical growth, but confidence and nurtures your dancer.

Ask what the teacher’s name will be. Talk to your dancer at home about their teacher and get them excited about meeting them.

Feel free to ask about the teacher and how their journey in dance began.

Classes

Decide in what type of class you would like to enrol your child. Classes can include ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, pointe, musical theater, acro , lyrical and contemporary.

Also, for younger dancers, studios will offer specialized programs for them, which is a great way to introduce them to dance.

Trust the studio in guiding and deciding what level and program best suits your child. Some dance disciplines require more of a commitment than others therefore, always ask how to achieve certain classes if your child has an idea in mind, so that it’s clear how to achieve this.

Facility

Your child’s dance studio should be equipped with: • Mirrors to promote learning technique • Sprung floors to prevent injuries • Ballet barres • Age appropriate music, movements and themes.

Discipline

Remember that dance is a discipline. This starts with respect for the studio, teacher and to yourself. It is important to come weekly to class to stay committed and to always come in proper attire listed by your studio.

Dance studios teach more than just dance. The relationships and respect among many other things that are taught will last a lifetime.

Top 10 Shoe Consumer Questions I always seem to get blisters. Why is that?

This is one of the top questions we get asked! Blisters are caused by friction or movement. The two most common causes we see are: 1) shoes that aren’t tied properly, and 2) cotton socks. While cotton breathes well, it doesn’t wick moisture away. A foot that’s wet or damp is much more likely to blister.

My toenails go black/blue when I run. What’s with that?

Absolutely! We have classic leather walking shoes for men and women to supplement our collection of breathable running shoes that can be used for walking.

I’ve had my shoes for five years.

How do I tell when they’re worn out?

How long should running shoes last before I need to replace them?

This all depends on you! A 270lb linebacker will need to replace shoes more often than a 125lb female triathlete. Your activity, weight, and gait will all determine how long this is.

The industry standard is 500 miles or 800 kms.

I’m a size 14 2E, no-one seems to carry big sizes. Do you?

There is no one fitness program that is best.

There are only fitness programs that are best for you because each of us is unique and we all have specific fitness goals in mind, be it weight loss, increase in cardio, mental-health benefits, correcting an injury or improving flexibility.

No Limits Fitness has myriad options for all goals, from self-directed exercise to one-on-one training to group programs that include yoga and the ever-popular boot camps.

When deciding on a program, you must consider your personal schedule and how much time you can dedicate, be it a halfhour three times a week, weekends only or more time five days per week.

Working out is work, but it should also be enjoyable, so find activities that not only fit your goals and schedule, but are fun to do.

If you want to push yourself to the limit, perhaps boot camp is the activity. If you prefer more fluid and gentle movements, try yoga. If you are working through an injury or need support, one-on-one training might be best.

Whatever your goal and fitness program, remember that results do not occur overnight. Like anything with pursuing, it will take time and dedication. It is a marathon, not a sprint.

Regardless of your goal, it is always a good idea to add some strength training to the program. You will not get bulky unless that is part of your goal. The benefits are proven when strength training is part of your fitness program. Your body is forced to burn extra calories to rebuild muscle, a process called after-burn. Consider this: you burn more calories with 30 minutes of weight training than you do with 30 minutes of cardio.

Weight training also teaches your muscles to be more resilient and anti-fragile, makes you better at any activity you enjoy, helps build the physique you want and is a great way to lose weight.

There are always barriers cited by those who don’t think they can undertake an exercise program Lack of time, dearth of social support, lack of energy, not enough motivation, skill level concern and fear of injury are some of the more excuses heard.

Here is how to overcome those barriers Lack of time

Identify available time slots and monitor your daily activities for one week. Identify at least five 30-minute time slots you can use for physical activity.

Social support

Explain your interest in physical activity to friends and family and ask them to support your efforts.

Lack of energy

Schedule physical activity for times in the day or week when you feel energetic.

Convince yourself that if you give it a chance, physical activity will increase your energy level.

Lack of motivation

Plan ahead. Make physical activity a regular part of your daily or weekly schedule and write it on your calendar.

Invite a friend to exercise with you on a regular basis or join an exercise class.

When you plan with others, there is less chance of not following through.

Fear of injury

Learn how to warm up and cool down to prevent injury. Learn how to exercise appropriately considering your age, fitness level, skill level and health status. Choose activities involving minimum risk.

Lack of skill

Start slow by selecting activities that don’t require new skills, such as walking, climbing stairs or jogging. Then, take a class to develop new skills.

Why should we consider xeriscaping?

• To have beautiful surroundings options are endless, and there are many plants to choose from.

• To conserve water—50–80% of residential water is used in our yards.

• To minimize pest problems—landscapes suited to our climate are healthier.

• To be environmentally responsible—overwatering can cause water to run off lawns and carry pollutants into storm drains.

• To save time—xeriscaped yards require less watering, less mowing, and less weeding.

• To save money—minimizing the costs of delivering water to our homes and businesses benefits us all.

Can I have a lawn?

Yes! Lawns can add to the enjoyment of our yards, increase property values, and help cool our homes in the summer, which reduces the need for air conditioners. However, most lawns are much larger than required and consume large amounts of water in comparison to most other plantings.

Take a look at your lawn and ask yourself these questions: • How much of my lawn is actually walked or played on?

• Is my lawn there because I don’t know what else to do with that area?

• Are there areas that are difficult or dangerous to mow?

Where can I get ideas?

The City is endeavouring to apply the xeriscaping principles to all newly installed city landscapes. The demonstration garden at 790 Harrington Road, at McArthur Island, and the park plantings along Lorne Street are three great existing examples that can be checked out for ideas.

What are some water-saving tips?

Choose an irrigation method that will water the plants in each area most effectively without wasting water.

Water when the weather is cool and calm. Early morning watering is best, followed by early evening. Water close to the roots to minimize evaporation.

OVER WATERING increases the risk of plant disease and attracts certain insects that prefer lush, weak growth. It is not in your plants’ best interest to water every second day. To encourage deep rooting and drought resistance, water deeply, thoroughly, and less often.

GOOD SOILS: Organic matter is an excellent addition to soil. It improves moisture holding capacity in sandy soils and helps to loosen clay soils.

How can we be better recyclers?

The City has never accepted Styrofoam in curbside bins. Styrofoam is very brittle and nearly impossible to sort from other materials when it is mixed because it is lightweight, breaks easily and clings to other materials in the sorting process. Styrofoam packaging blocks, foam food and meat trays, and foam egg cartons can be recycled at Recycle BC depots - General Grants Sahali, General Grants North Shore, and the Lorne Street Bottle Depot.

X What is the difference between plastic bags, overwrap and flexible plastics?

Soft plastic packaging like plastic bags and overwrap and flexible plastic packaging is an increasingly popular type of packaging. This material is also very difficult to separate from other materials during the sorting process so must be recycled at Recycle BC depots. Stretchy plastic bags like grocery and produce bags can be recycled, whereas the flexible plastics like chip bags, candy bar wrappers and coffee bean bags are made of several types of plastics that can’t be recycled. Flexible plastics are sold as a fuel to coal burning plants and used as energy source. If you are not sure if a material is flexible or stretchy, it is better to default to the flexible category, or search online at Kamloops.ca/WasteWise.

X Why can’t I put books in my recycling bin? Where can I recycle books?

Hard cover and soft cover books are greatest source of contamination in the City’s recycling program. Although they are made of paper, books are not part of the Recycle BC program because they are durable goods. Some types of books are accepted, like phone books, puzzle books, comics and magazines. Hard cover and soft cover books can be donated at a thrift store or recycled at one of the City’s recycling depots. X Why can’t I put all my items for recycling (such as scrap metal, clothing, and electronics) into my recycling bin?

The City’s recycling program has only ever accepted packaging and paper. Many other items can be recycled at various depots and local businesses because they have safe processes in place to manage the materials. Items such as batteries, paint, lights, clothing, electronics, and other usable goods have their own recycling systems. City curbside recycling is delivered to a facility that is specifically set up for sorting packaging and paper only. The Kamloops Waste Wise app provides information to users about where hundreds of items can be recycled or disposed of.

How do we manage our green space?

The City maintains numerous parks and green spaces in all neighbourhoods, including about 16,000 trees. We have a team of experts who use various processes and technologies to keep our green spaces, plants, and trees healthy and looking fantastic for all residents to enjoy.

X What guides the City in terms of the trees that are planted?

The City is guided by an Urban Forestry Management Strategy, and we have a crew of five full-time arborists who maintain our public tree inventory. On average, each tree receives general maintenance every six to eight years. The overall tree canopy in Kamloops (including public and private trees) is 12%, and our long-term goal is to increase the canopy to 20%. There is a significant amount of space available for new trees in the city; however, access to irrigation water is the limiting factor.

X What does the City do to maintain its sports fields to such a high level of turf quality?

Kamloops has always had a great reputation for its excellent playfields, and the recent international recognition for Norbrock Stadium as “Field of the Year” by the Sports Turf Managers Association has been turning a lot of heads. The City has a state-of-the-art turf maintenance program and a dedicated crew that takes pride in their work. Our turf maintenance strategy is a year-round program that includes goose control, special mowing techniques, irrigation programming, top dressing with a compost/sand mixture, deep-tine aeration, regular field inspections, accurate line marking, infield shale grooming/edging, litter control, and much more.

X Who do we call if we notice a problem or unsafe condition in a park, facility, or public space (for example, a broken tree branch, a large pothole, sprinkler head not turning off, excess litter, etc.)?

The Civic Operations Department has a central phone number that you can call, or you can email any time to report an issue. Please provide as much detail as you can regarding the specific location and what you would like the City to do to respond to your concern. Once your request for service is logged, it will be sent to the appropriate City team to take action, and you will receive an updated response in a timely manner. What can I flush?

The answer is simple. Only THREE things should go down your drain, and toilet paper is one of them.

X What things are commonly flushed that shouldn’t be?

Items that should NEVER be flushed include: • dental floss

All of these items can become trapped in our sewer system pumps, which leads to expensive repairs and maintenance that taxpayers end up paying for through sewer fees.

X What should I do with cooking oil or grease?

Grease is a common cause of sewer blockages. Never pour grease or cooking oil down a drain or flush it down a toilet. Rather than pouring grease down your pipes, always scrape it into the garbage.

X I flush all kinds of objects and have never had a problem. Why should I care?

Items such as “flushable wipes”, dental floss and feminine hygiene products may pass through your sewer service and make it to the City’s main if you are lucky. However, these items do not pass through the many sewer pumps located throughout our City. These items get caught in the pumps and lead to failures which put the entire city at risk of a sewer backup. Any of these items that manage the get through your sewer service and through the City’s sewer pumps are eventually captured at the sewage treatment center, removed from the wastewater, and sent to the landfill. It is a lot less risky and a lot less costly if you simply put these items in your garbage and not your toilet.

How do we compost yard waste?

City yard waste sites accept a variety of materials, which are then composted. The resulting compost is used on City green spaces and is also made available for sale to the public.

X How is Cinnamon Ridge compost made?

Yard waste is inspected for contamination and then fed into a large grinder, which breaks the material into fine pieces. The ground-up yard waste is then placed into large rows where natural bacteria start the breakdown process. Rows are turned by a mechanical turner to ensure uniform breakdown and provide oxygen to the bacteria in the windrow. This process continues for 3–12 months (depending on row composition and time of year). The material is then screened to remove large debris and any plastics that may have been missed at the receiving end. Finished compost is then ready for sale to the general public.

X Does the City accept dirt/sod/fill at yard waste sites?

No, this material is not compatible with the composting process. Dirt, fill, and sod can be taken as clean fill (no rocks or stumps) to any of the City’s landfills. Stumps can be split and taken to Cinnamon Ridge Compost Facility and Yard Waste Site (up to a maximum diameter of 24”).

X Can culled or windblown fruit be taken to the City yard waste drop-off sites?

Yes, windblown or culled tree fruit (e.g. apples, peaches, apricots, pears, cherries, and plums) are considered acceptable material. Clean Halloween pumpkins can also be taken to a designated yard waste site.

X Can noxious weeds be composted?

No, noxious weeds are not accepted at City yard waste sites. Noxious weeds need to be bagged and placed in garbage containers or taken to the landfill for free proper disposal. This reduces the possible spread of weed seeds that may occur during transport and handling and the contamination of our yard waste sites. How can we divert textile waste?

On average, each Kamloops resident discards about 37 kg of textiles per year, which results in about 3.4 million kg of waste that could have been repurposed. Residents can support their favourite charity by donating unwanted textiles instead of putting them in the garbage.

X Where can I recycle old clothing that is ripped or stained?

The clothing donation bins throughout the city accept all types of clothing and textiles, including items that are imperfect (e.g. have rips, stains, holes, etc.). Items that are not good for resale are sold to textile recyclers, where they are turned into things like carpet underlay, padding in cart seats, and rags. X What can I put in the textile recycling bins I see all over town?

The textile recycling bins accept any type of clothing, accessories, footwear, towels, blankets, sheets, curtains, and sleeping bags. Items should be clean and free of pet hair, dirt, and organic matter. For more information, visit Kamloops.ca/Textiles.

X I don’t have access to a vehicle. Can I put textiles in my recycling cart?

Clothing is not accepted in the City’s curbside or multi-family recycling programs. Diabetes Canada and local second-hand/thrift stores offer free home pickup for many different usable goods, including textiles, electronics, sports equipment, household items, tools, luggage, bikes, and small plastic pools. How do we keep bears away?

Mismanaged garbage is one of the main reasons bears enter neighbourhoods. Several years ago, in an effort to reduce situations where bears become habituated in residential neighbourhoods because of access to garbage, the City introduced its Bear Smart Bylaw.

X What is the Bear Smart Bylaw?

The Bear Smart Bylaw is actually part of Solid Waste and Recyclables Bylaw No. 40-59. This bylaw was very effective in reducing bear mortalities when it was initially implemented. It states that residents shouldn’t accumulate or store bear attractants (including garbage, fruit, and pet food), and garbage carts should not be placed on the curb prior to 4:00 am on collection day between April 1 and November 30 each year. Of course, bears can access garbage anywhere around your home, but a bear that is just passing through your neighbourhood and is not yet habituated to humans is much less likely to approach your home looking for food. Carts left at the curb overnight can be a buffet for bears.

X Can bears be relocated?

The short answer is “not usually”. Many factors are taken into consideration before a bear is relocated, including its age, sex, type, and location of conflict behaviour. However, most bears that are in conflict are already habituated to humans and are heavily food conditioned, which means they are likely to repeat the behaviour and may become dangerous as a result. Research has shown that many relocated bears return to their former range, especially if they have found food rewards there in the past. Further drawbacks to relocation include adding stress on the bear regarding its ability to find new food sources and shelter and causing conflict with other bears using the same habitat. While relocation may make humans feel better, it does not address the root cause of human-bear conflict, which is the mismanagement of food attractants.

X What can I do to keep bears away from my property?

There are easy actions residents can take to keep bears away from their properties and neighbourhoods, including: • storing garbage and recycling in a garage or sturdy, locked shed • removing bird feeders from May to November • storing pet food indoors • picking ripe fruit quickly • keeping barbecues clean • removing unwanted fruit trees

How do we dispose of asbestos?

Asbestos is a strong, fire-resistant mineral fibre that was used for fire protection and as insulation against heat or noise. It was also added to materials such as cement and plaster to give them more structural strength. Due to the negative health impacts from asbestos exposure, the material was phased out of the manufacturing of construction materials by the early 1990s.

X How does the City of Kamloops currently manage the disposal of asbestos-containing products?

The City and its landfill contractors follow specific procedures for managing known asbestos-containing materials at City landfill sites. These procedures are in line with WorkSafeBC requirements and the BC Hazardous Waste Regulation. The disposal of asbestos-containing material is limited to the Mission Flats Landfill and is by appointment only. Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance of disposal and can be made by contacting the Mission Flats Landfill at 250-828-3813. Asbestos waste is a hazardous material and must never be included in your household garbage.

X What other measures are being taken by the City to manage asbestos disposal?

The City, in partnership with the TNRD, has implemented new procedures to help protect workers, residents, and the environment. These procedures include the following: • public education regarding asbestos in building materials and the health impacts of asbestos exposure • implementing a screening process that will include the inspection of residential and commercial loads of waste construction materials at all City landfills • the requirement for laboratory testing and/or signed declaration forms depending on the type and age of construction materials being disposed of.

How do I maintain my sewer service?

X What parts of my sewer service are my responsibility as a homeowner?

As a homeowner you are responsible for maintaining flow and the cleanliness of sanitary lines from your home to the sanitary main. Knowing what you should and should flush down your toilets is crucial to avoiding blockages that you will be responsible for. You are also responsible for the structural integrity of your sewer service between your property line and your house. In the event of a blockage, you should contact a plumber to assess the problem and clear any blockages they find. You should also contact your home insurance provider. If the plumber believes the blockage is caused by a pipe failure beyond your property line, please contact the city at 250-828-3461. A video recording of the damaged pipe will need to be supplied to the City’s Utility Service Department in a hard copy, ie: USB or disk, for review.

X What else can I do to help maintain my service?

Do not treat your toilet as a garbage disposal. This will help avoid costly blockages that you will be responsible for. Invest in regular drain cleaning. Periodic flushing of your sewer service can help avoid costly blockages. Also, if you’re planning on doing any landscaping, do your research before starting to avoid planting anything too close to your sewer or water lines.

X What is the City’s responsibility for sewer maintenance?

The City performs regular flushing of City-owned sewer mains to remove oil and grease build up. The City is also responsible for the structural integrity of your sewer service from the main to your property line.

X How do I locate my sewer service?

The City has developed a Utility Locator map which shows various city-owned utilities. This tool is valuable in locating your services so you can maintain access to them, avoid damaging them when digging, and avoid planting over top of them. The map is available at Kamloops.ca/UtilityServices.
