Tasking gamer kids with posting photos of themselves outside to break up their amount of screen time or thanking their parents for helping with homework are among assignments David Thompson elementary teacher Christine McCauley has created to boost morale among students during the COVID-19 pandemic. “They can post videos, they can
post pictures. We’re trying to make the assignments really personal to them,” McCauley said, noting one student shared photos of her outdoor art project while another posted her sports team participating in the Toilet Paper Challenge — a playful take by sports teams on consumers hoarding the product during the pandemic. Keeping spirits high has been important for Kamloops teachers, with staff at multiple schools holding car parades to celebrate being together while being apart — the
latest happening Brockelhurst Middle School this week. South Kamloops secondary staff recently dropped a music video of teachers lip-syncing the words to the Friends theme song I’ll Be There For You for their students. The new normal of distance learning has educators teaching online, with common tools of delivery being the video-conferencing program Zoom and Google Classroom. See SOME COURSES, A6
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District will pay out more than $200,000 to former CAO Sukh Gill, who departed suddenly from the regional district in February. During a meeting in March — held via teleconference due to the COVID19 pandemic, and without media or public having access — the regional district approved, in its budget, “additional salary continuance costs” from its general administration reserve. “There’s still some payout occurring for our former CAO, in terms of vacation time that he’d accrued and things like that,” TNRD finance director Doug Rae told KTW. Asked if the entire sum was vacation pay, Rae replied: “Some of it is severance.” Rae would not detail what he said was “arranged with Mr. Gill,” but said more money is expected to be paid out in 2021. No breakdown of the $200,000 payment, including vacation days and severance, nor 2021 figures were provided. According to regional district policy, the maximum vacation time that can be banked upon retirement is 120 days (six months). The TNRD has called Gill’s departure in February an early retirement, a story that changed as Kamloops This

Week asked questions after the regional district’s top staffer was placed on paid leave in January. TNRD chair Ken Gillis initially said Gill was on paid leave from the regional district before handing in his resignation. Gillis later said he erroneously stated Gill had resigned, noting he had actually retired. Gillis also later said Gill was on vacation before his retirement. In February, KTW filed a Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act request for Gill’s severance package and received a response from the TNRD’s lawyer. A reply was received from Denise McCabe, partner of Fulton and Company, TNRD solicitors. See GILL, A4
