Arson has been ruled out in connection with this week’s death of Fiona France, the 62-year-old Westsyde resident who succumbed to injuries suffered when her mobile home went up in flames.

The fire began in her Westsyde Mobile Home Park trailer at about 3:30 a.m. on Monday, gutting the structure and damaging an adjacent trailer. France was rushed to Royal Inland Hospital, but died later that day.

Her son, Dallas France, 32, is remembering his mother as the person who was always there for him.

“Whatever I needed, my mom was always there for me,” said Dallas France, who lived in the trailer with his mother but wasn’t home at the time of the fire.

Brianne Gair, a longtime friend to Dallas and Fiona, has organized

a GoFundMe campaign to ease the family’s financial burden.

Gair said Fiona was like a mother to her as well, describing the 62-year-old as a supportive, caring person who always stopped her from procrastinating.

“Every kid, or even adult, she came in contact with, she was a mother figure to them,” Gair said.

“Most of us all called her mom, too.”

Gair said she was shocked to hear what happened, having last seen Fiona about an hour before the fire occurred.

Gair had spent Sunday with Fiona, who had left her house at about 2 a.m. Monday morning after the pair stayed up talking, Gair told KTW. “We were really close,” Gair said. “I saw her pretty much every day.”

Gair found out what had happened at about 7 a.m. and called Dallas, who was spending the

He said his phone rang so much that he eventually figured something must be wrong, so he took Gair’s call.

“I just started bawling,” he said.

The two went to visit Fiona in hospital, where Dallas hoped he’d be able to talk to her.

“I walked in and her eyes were grey — she looked horrible — and I knew she was gone,” he said.

Kamloops Fire Rescue and Kamloops RCMP said the fire was

suspicious in nature and officers arrested and questioned two male youths found nearby. They were later released.

Dallas said the fire still strikes him as suspicious, noting his mother didn’t smoke in the house and used battery-operated candles.

“Other than it being an electrical fire ... I couldn’t see how it would have happened other than somebody doing it, but I don’t know. I wasn’t home,” he said.

He described the two males being apprehended at the scene as odd, but was relieved to hear arson has been ruled out.

Kamloops Fire Rescue Chief Mike Adams told KTW earlier this week that all fires are considered suspicious until investigators have had time to determine cause and origin.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A Kamloops councillor is concerned about property crime in the city.

Coun. Bill Sarai said the issue has nearly reached a boiling point.

Police reported 60 thefts from motor vehicles last week and Sarai believes it is only a matter of time until victims take matters into their own hands.

“My biggest fear, someone’s going to get caught rummaging through a car or in a backyard and it’s going to be someone who has already got something stolen,” Sarai said. “They’re going to take the law into their own hands.”

Sarai posted concerns online, eliciting responses that seemed to echo his sentiment.

Comments ranged from “people are fed up” to threats of bats

and beatings that ring eerily familiar to a vigilante incident in Kamloops that resulted in catastrophic consequences.

Kamloops man Kristopher Teichrieb is serving time in prison after pleading guilty last fall to aggravated assault for beating 18-year-old Jessie Simpson with a baseball bat in 2016.

Teichrieb found the teen in his yard one night following a string of unrelated property crime incidents and took matters into his own hands.

Teichrieb was sentenced to seven years in prison as a result and expressed remorse for his actions in court. Simpson, meanwhile, will require support for the rest of his life.

In addition to that one highprofile incident, neighbourhood watch groups are at an all-time high online, with the internet providing the means to enable a surveillance society. Photos of alleged criminals can be passed

around the internet with a mere click of a button and tensions can soar, with frustrations over stolen property and the means to name those believed to be responsible to a mass audience.

The opportunity for vigilantism has perhaps never been greater.

Kamloops Cpl. Jodi Shelkie, however, said vigilantism is against the law.

While police are trained to respond to criminal activity, the average person is not, posing safety issues to all involved.

“Nobody should attempt to take the law into their own hands because it can be very dangerous,” Shelkie said. In addition to safety concerns, Shelkie said individuals open themselves up to being sued by whoever they are taking action against. Kamloops RCMP recently began releasing crime maps in order to let residents know which areas are being hit the hardest.

Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo candidates are gearing up for the federal election campaign, assembling teams, organizing offices and getting out into the region knocking on doors.

Canada’s 43rd federal election is on Oct. 21. The writ drops in September, meaning it is still early days, however KTW caught up with the candidates as they get organized.

Incumbent Conservative MP Cathy McLeod was in Barriere on Wednesday door-knocking and hosting a community barbecue for about 70 people, as she seeks to secure her fourth term in this fall’s election.

McLeod said she is balancing campaign and constituency work and intends to open campaign offices in Kamloops and 100 Mile House next month. Her campaign will again be managed by Deborah Petersmeyer while Russ Cundari will act as chair.

Liberal candidate Terry Lake also has his team in place. Lake’s former campaign manager, Henry Peril, is back and others on his team include SD73 communications manager Diana Skoglund, United Way’s Brenda Ainsley,

SD73 trustee John O’Fee and Thompson Rivers University dean of business Mike Henry.

“It’s a great team and I’ve been very humbled by people wanting to step up,” Lake said.

Reached on Wednesday, Lake said he will soon open his campaign office at 448 Victoria St. across from the Thompson Nicola Regional District downtown.

Door-knocking is already underway, he said.

NDP candidate Gina MyhillJones told KTW she has enjoyed door-knocking so far, mostly in Kamloops and 100 Mile House.

“We’re just finding a good pace and I’m finding people really receptive to talking about policies and issues,” she said.

Those issues so far among residents include the forestry industry and transportation in rural areas. She hopes to also start a conversation about PharmaCare.

Myhill-Jones’ campaign office and manager have yet to be hammered out, but her team includes veteran NDPers Bill Sundhu and Michael Crawford.

Green Party candidate Iain Currie had just arrived at his campaign office, located at 135 Victoria St. next to Bikini Bills downtown, when he spoke to KTW on Thursday.

Currie’s campaign manager is Jordan Bober, who managed Dan Hines and Donovan Cavers last provincial campaign. Voters can expect to see him door-knocking, at the farmers’ market and on social media.

People’s Party candidate Ken Finlayson has booked a meeting with the Rotary Cub of Kamloops in September and is working on business cards, buttons and banners. Finlayson doesn’t have a campaign manager or office.

“We’re starting pretty quick here,” he said.

Communist Party candidate Peter Kerek will lead a less traditional campaign. He won’t have a campaign office and will not be door-knocking. He called it a “fallacy” that door-knocking wins elections.

His strategy is to place a table at various events, and sit down and talk to people. His party, meanwhile, will have its platform finalized over the summer. His team includes Beat Klossner and wife Melissa Kerek. He does not have a campaign manager.

“This is the way I’ve done campaigns in the past and a lot of it comes down to difference in philosophies,” Kerek said.

“We have a lot less money in our hands.”

HOW A KAMLOOPS-BORN MAN HELPED GET US TO THE MOON SEAN BRADY STAFF REPORTER sbrady@kamloopsthisweek.com

A

s the world marks 50 years since man first landed on the moon, eyes are on those who helped take us there.

One of those people was Jim Chamberlin, a significant contributor to NASA’s success in manned spaceflight and a key figure in Canada’s aviation history.

He’s one of several subjects of interest to Royal Astronomical Society of Canada president Chris Gainor, who wrote about Chamberlin in his book Arrows to the Moon: Avro’s Engineers and the Space Race. Gainor spoke to KTW ahead of the moon landing anniversary on Saturday, July 20.

Jim Chamberlin was born in Kamloops, but his time in the city was brief. He was only here from his birth in 1915 until 1917, the year his father was killed at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

He and his mother returned to Eastern Canada shortly after.

After graduating from the University of Toronto in 1936 with a degree in mechanical engineering, he earned a master’s degree at the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, England, in 1939.

Upon returning to Canada, his aeronautics career got underway alongside the war effort, serving as chief engineer at Clark Ruse Aircraft in Dartmouth, N.S., where he worked on aircraft to counter submarines and for training, and later at Noorduyn Aviation in Montreal.

In 1946, Chamberlin became an engineer at Avro Canada, initially working as the chief aerodynamicist for the Avro C-102 jetliner and the Avro CF-100 jet interceptor before becoming the chief of technical design for the company as it began work on a keystone of Canadian aviation: the Avro Arrow.

The Arrow was thought to be the most advanced aircraft of its time, and Chamberlin was a key

But the project, which would have created Canada’s first supersonic jet fighters, was abruptly cancelled by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker in 1959.

But mere months after the Arrow was cancelled, Chamberlin joined the space race, recruited by NASA along with another two dozen Canadian engineers from Avro.

It wasn’t long before he became the head of engineering for Project Mercury, the effort that put astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr. into space in a suborbital flight in 1961.

“But Mercury could only last so long and they wanted to have a spacecraft that could do more. So they thought, let’s fix up Mercury a little more, but Chamberlin said no — we need a new spacecraft,” Gainor said.

That new spacecraft was the precursor to the Apollo program.

“And that was where Gemini came from. He basically designed Gemini,” Gainor said.

Gainor said the Gemini spacecraft appeared similar to Mercury, but was actually quite different, incorporating modular design ideas Chamberlin brought with him from his time at Avro.

“It was quite an excellent spacecraft and it was a favourite of the astronauts — kind of considered like a sports car. I look at it as the offspring of the Arrow,” Gainor said.

Chamberlin served as the first program manager for Gemini before leaving the position in 1963 to do troubleshooting for

the Apollo program, making direct contributions that led to its success.

Gainor said in the early days of NASA trying to figure out how to get to the moon, the agency was pursuing a direct approach that would land a rocket on the moon’s surface.

“But that introduces some problems because you’re carrying equipment to the lunar surface that you don’t need there, meaning you need a much bigger rocket,” he said.

Chamberlin was part of the reason that direct approach didn’t happen, with NASA instead opting to launch the lunar module from an orbiting spacecraft and then rendezvous to return back to Earth.

The idea itself came from John Houbolt, a NASA engineer who wasn’t working in human spaceflight, but was adopted and promoted by Chamberlin as the way to go forward.

“Chamberlin had a big role in promoting that. He heard about Houbolt’s ideas and looked at the math and realized it made a lot of sense,” Gainor said.

“I think that was one of his big gifts to NASA.” Chamberlin left NASA to join McDonnell Douglas Astronautics in 1970, but before leaving, worked on early design concepts for the space shuttle — work that continued at his new private employer, where he contributed detailed design and development work on another highly successful NASA manned spaceflight venture.

Gainor never met Chamberlin before he died of a heart attack in 1981 at the age of 65, but did meet with other Avro engineers who went to Houston with him.

“They all say they weren’t necessarily better than the Americans were, but it just showed them we could go down there and work alongside the best in the world,” he said.

“I would be very surprised if Chamberlin felt any different about that, given what I know about him.”

BAG RULING LIKELY TEMPORARY HURDLE In hindsight, it was pretty predictable the plastic bag industry would fight back. Last week’s court decision overturning the City of Victoria’s ban on plastic bags was less predictable but still, not unforeseeable.

Just a little more than a year after Victoria introduced its ban on plastic shopping bags, a B.C. Court of Appeals judge decided that while its intentions were good, the city didn’t have the jurisdiction to block plastic bags on environmental grounds.

The decision may concern other municipalities that have introduced, or are planning, similar bylaws — including Kamloops.

Admittedly, plastic bags are an awfully easy target. Even though most of us reuse them to some degree, they all eventually end up in the landfill — or worse. There are bigger targets like plastic bottles, which don’t break down as easily as plastic bags and tend not to see more than a single use.

Still, any step forward is a good step.

The court decision is definitely a step backward in the cause of, if not cleaning up, at least slowing down the mess we are making of our land and oceans. It is, at best, a temporary reprieve for the manufacturers and distributors represented by the Canadian Plastic Bag Association, which was fighting the bylaw. Once the provincial government gives such bylaws the nod, the court decision hurdle will have been overcome.

Federal or provincial plastic bag bans are likely on the way, and even if they don’t arrive, people will eventually give up plastic bags on their own.

We see the same battle happening in many sectors: protecting the remaining mountain caribou, slowing climate change or any of the other of the pressing environmental issues we are facing.

It’s all coming down to entrenched interests, whether plastic bag manufacturers, local guides or multinational oil companies, fighting change as hard as they can.

It would be better if rather than investing in a court battle to keep the status quo for a little longer, plastic bag manufacturers devoted themselves to producing a more environmentally acceptable bag.

usings on a soggy July day: I’d wager man-made climate change is real and I accept we have contributed to much of the results: more intense storms, widespread wildfires, flooding and the like.

But it might be too soon to call anything “the new normal.”

As residents of the B.C. Interior, Kamloopsians are in the unique position to be part of what many have called “the new normal” as it pertains to wildfire season.

Record-breaking wildfire summers of 2018 and 2017 left many square kilometres charred, countless buildings razed and too many people displaced.

And, in Kamloops, we coughed our way through two consecutive summers as the sunshine barely penetrated the smoke.

As the skies cleared in the fall of last year, we were told to adapt to this “new normal,” that such fiery and smoky summers would become the norm, not the exception. That may yet prove to be true, but I wouldn’t wager on it.

Two seasons do not a climate make and, based on this year, I’d say the odds are in my favour.

Yes, I am aware that the disastrous wildfires of 2003 did not ignite until August, so anything can happen this summer. But we should also be aware that, just three years ago, conditions were agreeable enough that we enjoyed an entire summer with nary a campfire ban.

Weather does seem to be mixed up this year: a balmy January, followed by the 15th-coldest February on record, followed by

MUSINGS a drier than usual May and June, followed now by a wetter than normal July. Don’t be surprised if it snows in late August. The only new normal seems to be the weather’s abnormality. *** When the powers-that-be decide on an approach to help those with addiction and mentalhealth issues, and that approach does not involve the tried-andfailed “war-on” mentality, there will be problems emanating from that approach.

So it is that we have some business owners in the downtown core asking those powers-that-be to help clean up the area.

The area in question is around Seymour and Sixth, where the Crossroads Inn stands. Crossroads has long been home to those struggling with the above afflictions and, in recent years, has also become the South Shore stop for Interior Health’s mobile supervised drug-use RV. Supervising people while they use drugs, and using the site as an opportunity to counsel and convince these people to seek help, is infinitely preferable to the failed

approach of criminalizing what is clearly a health issue.

However, business owners also have rights and deserve to be heard, as does Coun. Bill Sarai, who has suggested moving the supervised drug-use RV to the hospital. Predictably, the concerns of those business owners, and Sarai’s stance, prompted social justice warriors online to launch attacks.

To some, to even hint at criticizing the behaviour of those who use the various social services in Kamloops is akin to a crime.

Yes, people need help and measures need to be taken to save lives.

But that should not be delivered hand in hand with open drug use, discarded needles, condoms and more, increased property crime and vandalism and fear that generates in those unfortunate enough to live and work in the area. *** On a related note, news that The Mustard Seed New Life Community Kamloops is closing its 17 recovery beds for men is bad, indeed. Temporary or not, losing that many beds for men who wish to get clean is sad news for the many in Kamloops fighting addiction and needing the support.

Regardless of how much money is required to operate those 17 recovery beds for men needing sober and supporting living, government needs to realize it will spend multiple times that amount on those 17 men in other areas of social services with no such services available.

Funding that and other nonprofits is cheaper in the long run — and will more quickly turn around lives. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

DYER MISSES MARK IN OP-ED KUDOS TO RCMP AND CITY FOR 529 GARAGE Editor: I have been a proponent of this city’s efforts to patrol it’s streets and parks with RCMP officers on bicycles since it’s inception. It creates a positive, friendly optic to those officers who are hired to protect and serve our citizens.

I recently had reason to be even more appreciative of this service.

On the weekend of June 6, a good friend of mine left to spend the weekend at Seymour Arm. On his return Sunday evening, he discovered his mountain bike was stolen from a garage attached to his house. You can understand his joy at receiving a call four days later to inform him his bicycle had been found by an officer as it was being ridden through Pioneer Park.

The officer was astute enough to recognize a poorly done paint job on what appeared to be a fairly new and expensive bike and after stopping the rider and checking the serial number, he reclaimed the bike for my friend.

Kudos to this officer and the city for providing this service.

As a note to all other riders in town, it’s definitely worth your time to take a photo of your bike and serial number and register it for free with 529 Garage.

Editor: Re: Gynne Dyer’s column in the July 12 edition of KTW (‘The Real Refugee Problem’): Gwynne Dyer misses the mark when he claims that “human nature” dictates that the willingness of host populations to receive immigrants and refugees will inevitably decline as the migrant numbers grow.

In fact, a 2018 Environics survey found that six-in-10 Canadians chose “disagree” when asked the question, “Are immigration levels too high?”

It is a finding that has remained relatively stable for a decade.

Eight-in-10 said immigrants have a positive economic impact.

Compared with their 2017 survey, more respondents believed that immigrants adopt Canadian values.

Most of the national results extended a steady 30-year trend toward greater acceptance of immigrants.

But what about refugees?

The poll showed 38 per cent of Canadians agreed with the statement, “Many people claiming to be refugees

are not real refugees,” while 48 per cent disagreed.

So not human nature, then.

We are a nation of immigrants and the large majority of our ancestors came to Canada for economic opportunities.

I know mine did, in 1912.

How about yours, Mr. Dyer?

It’s the height of hypocracy to criticise today’s immigrants for coming for the very same reasons.

LET CITY FUND CLIMATE CHANGE INITIATIVES Editor: Re: Reader poll in the July 10 and July 12 editions of KTW (‘Would you be willing to pay more in taxes to fund City of Kamloops initiatives to combat climate change?’): I can’t believe that there

are 38 per cent of people out there, who believe the City of Kamloops should fight climate change — the same bunch who can’t fix our streets, but have money to paint rainbows across roads with toxic paint.

How can anyone believe

anything that comes from city hall would make sense?

We do not make enough pollution in this country to make any kind of difference.

So, until the rest of the world comes down to our level of pollution, anything we do is

irrelevant.

Until then, let the city fund their climate change propaganda with the money that would be wasted to put rainbows on the streets.

CLASS 5 LICENSES GOOD FOR RIDE-HAILING IN B.C. Editor: Re: KTW’s article of July 10 (‘Many questions over ride-hailing in B.C.’): Yes, requiring a Class 4 licence is a barrier. So is requiring a Class 5 licence.

Neither is much of a barrier. I have a Class 4 licence. It really does not take very

much to get one, but I found it very useful to study driving material again.

I think I am a better driver as a result.

Any driver with a licence above Class 5 is subject to having medical and eye exams every couple of years.

It might be nice to know that your

driver is healthy.

Far from wanting to make things easier, I am for making it a bit tougher.

A road test every five years might be a good idea for all classes of licences including Class 5.

Biosolids protesters stage another blockade DELIVERY OF TREATED SEWAGE SLUDGE TO TURTLE VALLEY MEETS MORE OPPOSITION A plan to spread treated sewage sludge from the City of Kamloops on a bison farm in Turtle Valley near Chase continues to meet opposition.

Another group has set up a blockade near the site and is refusing to allow trucks access to the property.

Protesters this week were again turning away trucks carrying biosolids to the Turtle Valley Bison Ranch near Chase.

Groups calling themselves Secwepmc Elders Sacred Fire and Women’s Sacred Fire Council have set up blockades to stop Arrow Transport Inc. trucks from delivering the City of Kamloops treated sewage sludge to the ranch.

The protest groups have set up blockades in the same spot that was vacated by another group of protesters in May after Arrow obtained a court injunction.

Spokesperson Miranda Dick said the groups now turning away trucks at the intersection of English

Road and Squilax Turtle Valley Road represent the Secwepmc nation and that they are acting on behalf of future generations.

She said the group

I love to see the Canadian version as its like going on a cross-Canada adventure and seeing the incredible landscape, and all the unique towns and cities. We also get to learn so much about Canadian history.

A few weeks ago we finally got to see the much anticipated season opener featuring our own City of Kamloops. It was cool to see the contestants zip-lining over the Ajax mine site; chasing cows at Circle Creek Ranch; and a final stop at the Kamloops Bike Ranch.

Part of the excitement of this show is seeing how well the paired up couples work together, and in many cases, how frustrated they get as they attempt to get to the finish line.

This is just like relationships.

There will no doubt be obstacles, challenges, hurdles, and some very tough terrain to get through. Its not always going to be easy. There are so many people that will throw in the towel too early because things might not go exactly as they had hoped. The ones that stick it out,

persevere, stay on course, and compromise are the ones that will succeed. They will also look back at those difficult tasks and be grateful for them. In many cases the adversity will bring them closer together.

I recently attended the wedding nuptials of a couple I matched. It was really special seeing them become husband and wife. To know I played a small part in getting them to this point filled my heart with gladness. Not only are these two absolutely gorgeous on the outside, they are equally as beautiful on the inside. They both had open minds and hearts when they met. That is truly the key to successful relationships.

It occurred to me at the wedding that these two were like Amazing Race participants

and due to their hard work, and dedication they reached this leg of the race.

Connecting people is a little like giving one person a candle, and the other one a match.

Their job is to keep that spark alive together and ensure their love will continue to shine bright.

If I give a couple all of the ingredients for a meal along with the recipe, they need to start cooking. Some people may not leave the oven on long enough.

I could give a couple a blank canvas and two paint brushes, but they have to start painting.

Some will put the brushes down before adding some vibrant color that will completely make it a masterpiece. I could give a couple seeds to plant with soil that is ready, but without water and light it will not grow.

Relationships are not 50-50.

You can’t put in just 50 percent.

They are 100-100. Give the best of yourself and then the plants will grow, while you hang up your beautiful art, while enjoying a gourmet meal by candlelight. She said she wants

tests of the biosolids to be conducted and their results made public.

“How do they know it is safe to be near our water?” Dick asked.

The treated sewage sludge originates from the City of Kamloops’ sewage-treatment facility on Mission Flats Road.

According to the city, there is currently 23,000 tonnes of biosolides stockpiled and awaiting delivery.

Opponents have called the plan a toxic waste dump, while the ranch’s owners said in May they are satisfied with the environmental safety of the project following an assessment by a professional agrologist.

In early June, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Dev Dley ruled against an injunction intended to put a stop to the biosolids project, stating the group of Turtle Valley Residents waging a court battle against Arrow failed to prove traffic, odour and health risks as a result of the project.

For her part, Dick said the protesters blocking English Road will not be easily convinced to abandon their blockade.

“We’re still stating there has been no consultation and there is no consent,” she said.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has approved borrowing for the Sun Peaks Centre and a surface water treatment plant, which will provide additional potable water to the growing resort municipality.

Sun Peaks Mayor Al Raine said phase one of construction is underway on the centre, which includes closing in the ice rink, conference rooms and a fitness centre.

Total cost of the project is just shy of $9 million, with $6 million coming from gas tax grant funding, $2 million borrowed from the regional district and the remainder taken from reserves.

Raine said the focus of the project is to bring money into the community during the off-season.

The goal is bigger concerts — which could draw larger names with guarantee of a performance despite the weather — conferences and events during the months in which skiers stay at home.

Raine said the mountain is hopping from November to April, but infrastructure is needed to attract tourism from April to October.

“Our total focus on the Sun Peaks Centre is not winter, it’s the off-season,” he said.

The rink is expected to be back in use in time for this winter, with the conference and fitness spaces available by next spring.

Meanwhile, the TNRD has also approved lending $1.42 million to Sun Peaks to increase capacity of its potable water. Currently, the municipality draws potable water from an aquifer.

But as the resort community grows, the supply is insufficient.

In 2011, Sun Peaks had 371 people. Today, Raine estimates the population to be about 950.

“We don’t have enough ground water to supply the needs of the community,” he said.

The plan is to supplement the ground water supply with

Raine said the site was not large enough for trucks to access and exit.

There are plans for another location, but visitors will continue to need to gas up before heading up the mountain in the immediate future.

SCHOOL TALKS Sun Peaks continues to push for a provincially funded school and resort officials hope for a decision in the next six to eight months.

Raine said a new location remains in the preliminary stage. The present school location is limited in size and infrastructure, being located on the ski hill.

Raine said when the school was first built, opening with a handful of students, it was funded by the community.

It has now grown to 130 students from grades K to 12 and Raine said an elementary school should be properly funded.

Most kids, about 100, attending the school are in elementary school.

“There’s not enough room in the present site to put enough classrooms,” Raine said.

A committee consisting of representatives from the school district, TNRD and resort municipality will meet on the issue.

In the meantime, plans for a TNRD library at Sun Peaks remain on hiatus.

Raine said a library should coincide with the new school.

Baby owls cause a hoot in the Nicola Valley DARA HILL

Burrowing owl enthusiasts in the Nicola Valley are one step closer to their goal of seeing the species thrive without any help from humans.

Until then, the Burrowing Owl Conservation Society of B.C. plans to continue working with the Upper Nicola Indian Band (UNB) to repopulate the endangered birds through the burrowing owl species-at-risk reintroduction program.

The groups welcomed the public to the UNB reserve at Douglas Lake on July 4 to celebrate the hatching of the next generation of burrowing owls.

Merely a few weeks old, five owls were adorned with identification bands, had their weight recorded, were shown off for a few photos and finally released back into their burrows.

Anyone who sees the birds will now know where they came from, said program leader Dawn Brodie. She added it is important to band the birds before they begin to fly.

This year marks the fourth year of reintroducing captive-raised burrowing owls at the UNB reserve at Douglas Lake with organizers see more and more success each year.

Nicola Valley-born owls have been spotted all along the west coast — in Washington, Oregon, California, and even the NASA research station in California.

“My hope, my dream, is that they grow up here, migrate in October down south, and they’ll return in the spring. And when we come up [to the reserve] in the spring we’re looking for burrowing owls,” Brodie said.

A total of 29 captive bred owls have been released at the site since 2016, and the owls have produced 53 wild-born young.

“This year alone we have 21 young in these burrows with three pairs of owls,” said Chris Gills, the project’s lead biologist. “So it’s a

highly productive sight, and there’s a reason for that — it’s intact grasslands.”

Finding a prime ecosystem for these birds is no easy feat in today’s world with the challenges posed by habitat loss, pesticide use and decline of species such as badgers.

Unlike most birds of prey, burrowing owls spend a great deal of time on or near the ground and make their homes in underground burrows abandoned by badgers or marmots.

That’s the main reason why this site does so well. The grassland habitats within British Columbia are disappearing.

Partnering with the band has been crucial to the program’s success because a lot of other reintroduction programs happen on private land, and when ownership changes hands the programs may be stalled or dismissed.

Burrowing owls were historically present on the band’s reserves — up until the 1990s according to elders and community members — but populations in the Nicola Valley and across Canada have declined dramatically.

Habitat loss is the main culprit.

UNB implemented a burrowing owl reintroduction program in partnership with the Burrowing Owl Conservation Society of B.C. in 2014 to increase population numbers in the Thompson-Nicola region.

“I give huge kudos to the band for taking the steps to actually identify occupied habitat, take steps to conserve that habitat and, in the case of owls, implementing a recovery program for them,” Gills said.

Students from N’kwala School have been engaged in the project since the early days, said program leader Loretta Holmes.

In 2018, this site alone accounted for nine per cent of all the wild born young in British Columbia, so it makes it one of the top sites in the province for burrowing owls.

The current rate of return for the owls is less than four per cent.

“It’s actually a normal number. If you have thousands of

birds, it’s all right, but not if you’re down to your last number. That’s

why we maximize every egg we can,” Holmes said.

Bennett came to ask for council’s support of Interfor’s bid to take over the Canfor timber rights. New legislation requires a public interest test on any tenure, he explained.

Canfor announced in June it will be permanently closing the Vavenby sawmill this month and selling its associated forest tenure for $60 million to Interfor, which will eliminate about 170 jobs in the Clearwater area.

Bennett explained the mountain pine beetle killed much of the log supply in the early 2000s, which companies have been salvaging for the past 15 to 20 years. However, that’s over, and annual allowable cut levels set by the province have been dropping and will continue to drop, at least for a couple of years. High log prices in 2018 with a market fall in 2019 “created what I call ‘a perfect storm,’” Bennett said.

The Adams Lake and Vavenby mills have been in a tougher situation than most, he explained. He pointed to an overall timber supply gap of about one million cubic metres.

“Every logging truck has about 50 cubic metres on it, so it’s a pretty big supply gap.

Our facility consumes about 1.1 million cubic metres or 100 logging trucks per day.”

Bennett says with the additional timber supply from Canfor, “we become whole again.”

“Our employees were starting to get a bit disgruntled because they weren’t getting fulltime employment at the facility… Despite AACs (annual allowable cuts) continuing to drop, this puts us in really

good shape for the next decade-plus.”

While he said the Clearwater situation isn’t good, “if it wasn’t them, it was us. And if it wasn’t either of us, frankly, within the next five to 10 years, we would both be in a very disadvantaged situation and probably would be facing closure.”

He said the Adams Lake Division employs roughly 235 non-union hourly employees and another 250 employees contracted.

Council members present (Mayor Alan Harrison and Couns.

Chad Eliason and Tim Lavery were absent) agreed to send a letter of support to the province supporting the transfer of timber licences, but not before councillors Louise Wallace Richmond and Debbie Cannon questioned Bennett at length about Canoe Forest Products’ view of the timber transfer.

Bennett said Adams Lake has a good relationship with Gorman Bros., who own the Canoe plant. He said, geographically, the timber, to the north, would be economically difficult for Gorman to use.

Cannon also asked if, by supporting Interfor, council would be going against the interests of First Nations and community forests.

In the end, Coun.

Kevin Flynn, acting as deputy mayor, said he doesn’t think it’s council’s job to begin negotiating for different groups.

“If we think it’s important to give Adams Lake and Interfor more timber so they can save jobs, we’re for it, he said.”

Council will copy the letter of support to Gorman Bros.

Mustard Seed New Life Community Kamloops will close its men’s recovery program at the end of the month, but says it plans to reopen at a future unknown date.

Managing director Diane Down said the funding model is not sustainable — and never has been — leading to a “temporary shutdown.”

“We’re doing a very temporary shutdown

to research a more sustainable model with better supports for our clients and then we will reopen,” Down told KTW. No timeline could be provided for when the program will reopen.

Seventeen beds are located in the outreach building at Mustard Seed downtown, 181 West Victoria St. Down said they have been operating since the 1990s.

Asked why the decision now, she

said: “It wasn’t sustainable before and that was part of the challenge at New Life.

Part of the challenge of a non-profit is, you’ve got to decide — where can you get funding and what do you want your donors to assist you with. We need to find a better way of capturing the vision of our donors for our programs in a way that will survive for the long haul.”

Mustard Seed takes referrals from the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre

and other centres for men who want sober and supported living.

Tenants typically stay one to 18 months.

She said Mustard Seed stopped accepting new tenants two or three months ago, at which time the beds were close to being full.

Three tenants currently accessing the service will be rehoused, Down said.

The closure comes into effect July 31.

Other services provided by Mustard Seed include an outreach drop-in centre, non-profit dental clinic and advocacy services, such as housing supports and health and wellness.

Down said the rest of those services will remain. Its thrift store shuttered in May on Seymour Street.

Down said it closed similarily to the men’s recovery program: “We needed to reboot and work out a better model of operations.”

Further closures are not expected, she said.

Alberta-based Mustard Seed merged

with New Life Community Kamloops last fall.

The faith-based non-profit has had a legacy in Kamloops for more than four decades, acting as a hub for those in need in the city’s downtown core.

Down said change comes with innovation and Mustard Seed brings with it “expertise” having run a number of other wellness services connected to housing in Calgary and Edmonton.

“What we can do is we can replicate the model that they’re using,” she said.

“That’s part of where the delay comes in

here, where have a little bit of a gap, because we need to figure out how we can model our program after theirs with the appropriate funding.

Alberta government is different, they do it differently so we need to figure out how we can do that here. We’re replicating something that is already working very successfully with the Mustard Seed in Alberta.”

She said the dental clinic will become an anchor for a wellness centre, with services added such as more employment coaching and health services.

More information is expected in September.

New school option on way to Kamloops TODD SULLIVAN

A new alternative to public schools is opening its doors in Kamloops — and parents can learn more during an open house this Monday.

The program from Pivot Point Learning Centres Society is called Community Classrooms and the open house will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m at 705 Seymour St. downtown.

“It’s an alternative schooling option for kids who don’t really do well in the typical classroom environment,” said Sarah Falk, Pivot Point’s regional manager.

Falk said that many of the kids involved with the program have some form of diagnosis and may be on the autism spectrum, but she noted that is not a requirement for admission.

Potential students are assessed during an informal interview.

“We usually just meet with the families and find out a bit more about the kid and what the kids needs are,” she said.

Community Classrooms focus on small class sizes, with no more than 12 students, and a ratio of three students to one instructor or teaching assistant.

The curriculum matches that of public schools and comes from Pivot Point’s partnership with a distributed learning school. It features plenty of hands-on learning, as well as customized content to meet each child’s individual needs and interests.

Falk said the program is mostly aiming to find students between the ages of 10 and 14.

The open house is also a chance for the public to learn more about Community Classrooms and check out the facility, which has been converted from a residential space into an office.

On hand will be Crystal Thompson, assistant director of Pivot Point, Cheryl Elderton, education program manager, Sydney Lamarsh, next year’s instructor, and Falk.

“It’s a good chance for people to see the space and learn more about what we’re offering,” Falk said.

Community Classrooms are new to Kamloops, but not to B.C. They operate in Abbotsford, Nanaimo, Cowichan, Chilliwack, Cranbrook, Nelson, Maple Ridge, Cloverdale, and Victoria, with one opening in Salmon Arm this September.

VANCOUVER — One of the largest fuel companies in British Columbia says there’s no retail market more competitive than gasoline in Canada and denies any price setting between competitors.

Ian White, senior vice president of marketing and innovation for Parkland Fuel Corp., told a threemember panel leading a public inquiry into the province’s gas prices today that a price difference of a tenth of a cent per litre can be enough to lose customers.

Parkland Fuel operates gas stations under Chevron and other banners, supplies fuel to airlines and BC Ferries, and owns and operates one of B.C.’s only refineries in Burnaby.

White said while factors like clean washrooms and convenience stores can influence consumers, they simply won’t visit your gas station if you don’t have a competitive price.

Economist Henry Kahwaty, who was hired by Parkland, said that environment leads retailers into a race to the bottom until they reach unprofit-

able prices, at which point there is typically a price jump and the process repeats itself.

But he said controlling that process would require a significant level of co-ordination considering almost half of the gas stations in B.C. are run by independent dealers rather than companies.

“This is not evidence of collusion,’’ Kahwaty said.

Premier John Horgan called the public inquiry in May as prices at the pump reached a record-breaking $1.70 per litre.

At the time, the B.C. Liberals and Alberta government bought advertising blaming Horgan and linking his government’s resistance to the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and taxes to the surging costs.

Jean-Denis Charlebois, chief economist for the National Energy Board, told the inquiry panel he can’t account for an independent report that contradicts its claim that the Trans Mountain pipeline is operating at capacity.

Charlebois told the three-member panel that in the first quarter of 2019, the Trans Mountain pipeline was operating at 98 per cent capacity.

The panel asked if he could shed

light on a report by economists Robyn Allan and Marc Eliesen, the former president of the Insurance Corp. of B.C. and chief executive of BC Hydro, respectively.

Allan and Eliesen said their analysis found the Trans Mountain capacity is 400,000 barrels a day, falling to 300,000 barrels a day only if 20 per cent of the capacity is taken up by heavy oil.

But it rarely reaches that threshold of heavy oil and Allan and Eliesen claim there were 97,000 barrels a day of capacity in the first quarter of 2019 that were not used.

Earlier this week, Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson issued a statement criticizing the government for the inquiry’s short timeline and terms of reference that limit it from investigating government activity that affects gas prices.

“It is outrageous that an investigation into fuel costs would be barred from considering the impacts of fuel taxes, transit taxes, and the government’s opposition to increasing pipeline capacity,’’ Wilkinson said.

The inquiry will conclude with a final report by the panel due Aug. 30.

MONTREAL — At least eight people have died in three crashes involving de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver planes in less than a week in Canada, but civil aviation experts say the aircraft remains the safest, popular and best option for bush pilots.

Gilles Lapierre, pastpresident of Aviateurs Quebec, an association of Quebec pilots, said while it has been more than 50 years since the last Beaver was built, pilots operating in remote regions appreciate what the aircraft brings.

Transportation Safety Board officials are investigating at least three crashes involving DHC-2 Beavers since July 11, when a float plane crashed in the central Ontario community of Hawk Junction, killing two people aboard.

Boulene, southeast of Chibougamau, Que., killing three of four people on board. Officials believe the plane was flying too low while avoiding a severe storm and struck some trees.

Recovery operations are underway in the most recent incident, when a Beaver carrying seven people including the pilot crashed in Mistastin Lake, in a remote part of Labrador on Monday. Three people are confirmed dead with another four occupants missing.

VICTORIA — The ongoing battle against urban deer in one Vancouver Island municipality is moving in a new direction as officials in Oak Bay prepare to use contraceptives to manage the population.

The plan is to track female black-tailed deer through the Victoria suburb and given them an injection designed to prevent them from becoming pregnant.

The work can be done on cityowned land, but permission from homeowners is required if the deer are spotted on private property.

In a social media post, Oak Bay Mayor Kevin Murdoch urges

residents of the Victoria suburb to register their properties so veterinarians can follow deer.

The $40,000, jointly funded municipal and provincial initiative is slated to begin delivering the contraceptives by late summer.

Urban deer can be aggressive toward people or pets, especially during fawning season, and the animals also munch on gardens and can create unexpected hazards for drivers and cyclists.

A growing population of blacktailed deer in Oak Bay prompted the municipality to approve a cull of 11 animals in 2015, but the cull angered many residents and raised the concerns of groups such as the B.C. SPCA.

B.C.’s old growth trees protected CANADIAN PRESS

SAANICH — The British Columbia government is protecting 54 of the province’s largest and oldest trees along with a one-hectare buffer zone surrounding each of the giants.

Forests Minister Doug Donaldson says the announcement is also the start of a

broader conversation about the future of oldgrowth management in the province.

The trees are on the University of B.C.’s Big Tree Registry that has identified 347 of the largest of each species in the province.

The 54 trees were at risk of being harvested, but now the government says they’ll be protected.

The trees are located in more than two dozen locations, including central B.C., the East Kootenays, Haida Gwaii, Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley.

The species include arbutus, coastal Douglas fir, Pacific yew, ponderosa pine, Sitka spruce, western red cedar and western white pine.

Yes, I know.

Two showbiz figures, complete novices in politics, trying to run a country of 44 million people (which, by the way, is in a proxy war with Russia).

What could possibly go wrong?

But if you are ready for generational turnover, as Ukrainian voters obviously are, then by definition the politicians you back will be younger people — Zelensky is 41, and Vakarchuk is 44 — with little experience in politics.

They do have experience in other walks of life, though.

Zelensky grew up in the mostly Russianspeaking steeltown of Krivoi Rog in the Ukrainian rustbelt, and managed to get a law degree before becoming a comedian and building a successful TV production company.

Vakarchuk is not just a singer. He also has a doctorate in theoretical physics — and after the Orange Revolution of 20042005 he actually sat as

a deputy in the Rada for a short time before quitting in disgust at the corruption and infighting.

Most of the members of the new Rada will also be tyros.

Vakarchuk’s party is so dedicated to changing the way things are done that it is not letting any member of the current parliament run on its list.

Zelensky’s parliamentary list is more varied: about one-third reformers, one-third people with personal or business ties to Zelensky — and one-third people with ties to Ihor Kolomoisky.

This is when the red lights start flashing, because Kolomoisky is a major oligarch who owns the TV channel that has been broadcasting Zelensky’s show,

Servant of the People, for the past three years.

Servant of the People has a heartwarming plot in which Zelensky plays a high school teacher who is suddenly elevated to the presidency by the voters after his rant about the appalling state of Ukrainian politics, secretly taped by a student, goes viral.

Now, Zelensky leads a real political party with that name and he is living out the same miracle.

Or is he just following a cunning strategy that he and Kolomoisky settled on around four years ago?

What did Kolomoisky stand to get out of it?

Well, he was self-exiled in Israel because of a huge business and legal dispute with Petro

Poroshenko, another oligarch who was president at the time and might send him to jail.

Kolomoisky could only go home if Poroshenko lost the next election.

But why would Zelensky play along with that?

He was already very successful, and he could probably have sold that TV series to some other outlet.

Did he just want to be president?

And if so, did he really plan to do Kolomoisky’s bidding once he got the job?

Thinking too hard about this can drive you crazy.

For example, Zelensky has just appointed Andriy Bohdan, once Kolomoisky’s lawyer, to the key job of head of administration in the president’s office.

That’s pretty suspicious.

However, Bohdan has also served as lawyer to almost every other oligarch in the country and he probably knows where all the bodies are buried.

That would be very useful if Zelensky really plans to go after them all, which he must do if he really intends to change the way the country is run.

You can argue it both ways with equal plausibility.

Right or wrong, however, most Ukrainians currently believe that Zelensky is the real thing — and actually, so do I. Of course, I have been wrong a couple of times in the past.

No promises, so no disappointments,� said Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky during the election campaign that made him the president last May. It was a daring, even cynical thing for a politician to say, but then he’s not a politician.

Zelensky is a television comedian who really doesn’t have much in the way of policies yet — but he does represent a fresh start for Ukraine, and that’s what voters wanted.

After two nonviolent popular revolutions in 2004 and 2014 that promised change, twice the country ended up back in the hands of the same old corrupt post-Soviet oligarchs.

Zelensky didn’t need to make promises. He just needed to be different.

Petro Poroshenko, former President of Ukraine — he hasn’t actually done much since he got elected, but that’s because he doesn’t have a majority in the Rada (parliament).

In fact, he doesn’t have anybody in the Rada, because his party, Servant of the People, was only formed last year. So his first priority had to be a fresh election for a new parliament.

It’s happening next Sunday.

Nobody expects Zelensky to get the astounding 73 per cent victory that he got in the presidential election, but the public has become a good deal more positive about the future since his election.

An opinion poll last week showed that optimism was up from 39 per cent late last year to 71per cent now.

If Zelensky’s party doesn’t win an absolute majority in the Rada, it will at least get 45 to 48 per cent of the vote.

s the capital of British Columbia, the city of Victoria offers a great many interesting options in the way of dining, entertainment, recreation, culture, history and other travel experiences.

However, it’s also teeming with opportunities to enjoy nature and natural history — and right in the city, too.

There are some great parks, nature sanctuaries and even indoor venues where nature-lovers can sate their hunger for all things wooded and winged, furry and finned. Some of the experiences are pretty hands-on.

Several city parks offer great bird-watching opportunities. A trip to Beacon Hill Park is highlighted by a view of the heron rookery located in the park.

During a spring visit there, before the young birds fledged, I watched them squawking in their nests while their parents flew back and forth to supply them with food.

They are fairly high up, so a good pair of binoculars helps you enjoy the sight; ditto, a camera with a longer lens can help you capture the moment in photos better than those taken with a smartphone camera.

Cattle Point in Uplands Park, located on the city’s Oak Bay suburb, provided plenty of bird-watching opportunities, as well.

During a couple of visits there, I watched a pair

of killdeers on their nest on the rocky ground not far from where the ocean waves lapped against the earth. I observed black oyster-catchers fishing for their food, a heron wading through slots in the rocky shoreline in search of tasty tidbits as the tide began to rise, bringing with it foods, taking others away.

The city’s gem for seeing wildlife, though — especially for bird-watchers — is Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary, located not far from the

University of Victoria.

I enjoyed a leisurely walk around the lake’s perimeter trail, encountering songbirds, waterfowl, turtles, frogs and dragonflies during my morning excursion.

The sanctuary also features a nature house, where you can stimulate your senses with interpretive displays, discover nature up-close and visit a live bee house.

If time allows, you can browse the natural history reading room.

There are several mustsee indoor locations for nature-lovers visiting the city, and without a doubt, the Royal B.C. Museum’s natural history department is included in that list.

I spent an afternoon wandering through it, enjoying its life-like nature dioramas of different B.C. landscapes. I immersed myself in the interactive exhibits, learning about nature and the natural history of Canada’s westernmost province.

I could easily have spent an entire day absorbed in its hallways and exhibits.

And while on the topic of interactive experiences, the Victoria Bug Zoo is a great place for kids and adults alike.

It literally is a hands-on museum where children, (and big kids, too) are encouraged to handle some of the live bugs on display — under the guidance of one of the tour leaders, of course.

the feeling of a big green bug that looks like a leaf crawling all over your hand.

I’m not really a bug person — and there are a couple of those insects at the zoo that I don’t want on me anywhere, despite the guide’s assurance it’s safe.

Hey, handling one bug is enough for one day for me, thanks.

At the other end of the size scale from tiny bugs sits giant aquatic wildlife — whales.

I enjoyed a brilliant afternoon of whale-watching with Eagle Wing Tours, one of several local tour companies that offer whale-watching excursions.

The weather gods smiled on us, giving us a bright sunny day with blue skies; so did the nature gods.

It did not take long after sailing out of Victoria’s harbour before we spotted whales.

First, there were the orcas we encountered, a large pod of them, swimming not far off from our boat as we cruised along through the Salish Sea in Victoria’s coastal waters.

Orcas are always cool to see, but for me, the highlight of the trip involved seeing humpback whales and their huge tail flukes rise out of the water, just before one of their dives.

It’s one of those spectacles of nature I never tire of, no matter how many times I watch it.

Sun, wind, whales and the sea — it’s a great way to enjoy nature on any visit to Victoria.

ntold pioneer stories will soon come into the light at the Kamloops Library, thanks to a visiting Victoria author who has sought out tales of the lesser known firsts in the province.

Author May Q. Wong was born to Chinese immigrant parents who faced legislated discrimination in the form of the head tax. She grew up in Montreal and moved to Victoria in the 1980s.

Upon arrival, all she knew of Victoria was its reputation for being “more English than the English” — something the city’s propensity for double-decker buses, tea at the Empress Hotel and well-tended gardens supports.

But as time went on Wong asked herself, has it always been like this?

Upon investigation, she found that Victoria, like many cities in the province, is rife with multicultural stories. After digging deeper, she began work in 2014 on her second book, City in Colour: Rediscovered Stories of Victoria’s Multicultural Past, the subject of her talk at the Kamloops Library to be held on Wednesday.

Wong told KTW the stories of pioneer figures she found were mostly sourced from journals and books, and she decided to focus on those who had been accom-

plished in fighting for social justice or women, since stories of women from the era often go untold — particularly women of colour.

One example, her favourite in fact, was of Amelia Copperman, a Jewish woman who emigrated from Prussia in the mid-1800s.

Copperman and her husband first made their way to California before following a well-carved path up the coast to B.C. during the gold rush, eventually settling in Victoria.

“He was what they used to call an Indian trader — an entrepreneur who traded for goods with local Indigenous communities.

The two later divorced and she had the audacity to take over the business and become a businesswoman,” Wong said, noting how rare it was for women in the mid1800s to run a business.

Copperman’s approach differed from her husband’s and she befriended the Indigenous community and was known to protect them.

“I like to call her a woman with chutzpah,” Wong said.

At a time when world leaders are questioning the value of multiculturalism, Wong said she wrote the book because she wanted to counter the rhetoric and growing fear over immigrants and the policies that bring them to the country.

T

here is still time to donate works of art to the Art from the Attic fundraiser, which will take place in October.

Organized by the Rotary Club of Kamloops Daybreak, Art from the Attic is helping to raise money for some much-needed upgrades at the Overlander long-term care facility and its Trinity Hospice.

According to Rotary member Beverly Warner, more than 700 pieces of art have been collected, but organizers are hoping to reach 1,200 by September to make the event a success.

“We've had awesome momentum,” she said. “We want to just keep it in the front of people's minds.”

Rotary members will take care of cleaning and preparing the artwork for sale. They are also looking for used frames.

All the art will be sold at the event on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 at the Cooper Centre, at Eighth Street and York Avenue in North Kamloops (the former Dirty Jersey/Bowlertime building).

The goal is to raise about $20,000, which is about a quarter of the estimated cost of the work planned at Overlander. Warner has also been busy writing grants for the project and has been in contact with a number of service clubs in Kamloops to determine what they might be able to contribute.

Rotary hopes the work at Overlander can be done in 2020.

“I have no doubt that we will

get the money by next summer,” Warner said.

Overlander, which is on Southill Street in Brocklehurst, features green space for its residents, but access can be challenging. Some walkways are uneven, cracked or split and one of the access points has a sharp grade from the doorway to the grass.

Plans are to dig up the current walkway and replace it with something that will allow easier access for those with mobility issues. There is also a proposal to rebuild the facility’s gazebo as the current one needs to be updated and is not up to code.

Ensuring that residents at Overlander have easy access to the space isn’t only about aesthetics. Warner said spending time outdoors has medical benefits and that visitation increases with access to green space.

“So this outside area is really important,” she said. “And these people just don’t have access.”

of those stories, currently airing on TV and YouTube, belongs to Kamloops resident Danica Wilkinson.

The commercial tells the story of the trip she made across Canada by bike with five of her friends in the summer of 2014.

“I have always had the inclination to bike cross Canada,” she said. “And so I got my five other friends, who were from different areas of my life, childhood friends, and some university friends, and we all decided to do it together.”

Wilkinson first shared the story on the coffee company’s website five years ago. Though Tim Hortons initially rejected her entry, officials reached out to her last year with a desire to turn it into a commercial.

She was flown to Toronto to film the spot,

relating the story of the cross-country journey on camera. Producers then filmed re-enactments of her story using professional actors.

Though the actual trip took 91 days from Victoria to St. John’s, the one-minute video focuses mostly on a single anecdote involving a struggle to get through a washed-out trail while the group was in Ontario.

There were plenty of other struggles along the way, though, including bike repairs, tire replacements and the psychological impact of such an adventure.

“There were some lowlights of our friendship on the way across,” Wilkinson said.

“Different personalities clashing and how to work through that.

You’re sleeping in the tent together that night, so it’s just one of those

things on how to keep moving on while dealing with personal issues.”

Wilkinson said there was a legitimate connection to Tim Hortons during the trip, noting the cyclists would frequently stop for coffee in the mornings or for some soup to warm them up in the middle of a chilly ride.

The six road-trippers weren’t cyclists before the 2014 adventure, meaning they had to start from scratch, buying bikes and gear for

the cross-country journey.

While there was a bit of a learning curve in getting used to the bikes and their clip-in pedals, Wilkinson and her companions took to it quickly.

She continues to ride with some of the same crew from the crossCanada trip, noting they have some plans in place for future biking challenges, with their eyes set on a cross-Italy trip or a ride down the Oregon Trail.

Swap clothes and save landfill space

A

s a store owner in the downtown core, I have seen a shift in our customers’ focus toward creating less waste and becoming more conscious of their actions.

My business partner and I have always been aware of doing our part — providing paper bags instead of plastic and stocking up on items from beeswax wraps to reusable straws — but we took it a step further in our personal lives this past week and attended a clothing swap.

According to the Recycling Council of Canada, the average person throws out 81 pounds of textiles annually, and according to the City of Brandon’s environmental co-ordinator, an estimated 85 per cent of textiles end up in our landfill.

I’ll admit I have a bit of a problem with clothing and tend to hold onto things for far too long. But, rather than throwing them away, I always make a point to donate rather than toss.

things. Anything that didn’t make the cut was gathered up and will be donated to a local charity.

It took some organizing on our friend’s part to find a time and date that worked for everyone, but the outcome was worth it.

In order to have the most successful swap, ask that everyone prewash the items and if the tags are removed to have the size attached.

Invite people of all sizes and styles, as you never know who is looking for what. We found going around the room and introducing items was fun, but you can also just throw everything in the middle and have a free for all.

Including accessories like shoes or jewelry can also work well. You’ll feel better knowing it all went to a great new home, and stayed out of the landfill.

PORTRUSH, Ireland — The buzz among the locals at Royal Portrush has been all about Northern Irish natives Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell this week, so Shane Lowry felt like he came into his “home” British Open a little under the radar.

“Obviously not now,’’ Lowry said.

A guy from across the Irish border was in second place on Thursday after the first round of the first British Open in these parts since 1951, with the bearded Lowry quelling early jitters to shoot a 4-under 67 that could easily have been better.

Lowry quickly felt at ease on the Dunluce Links. He saw familiar faces as he scanned the crowd and knew much of the course, having won the North of Ireland

title here as an amateur in 2008.

Indeed, Lowry was so confident about his game and the surroundings that he was happy to roll into Portrush late Monday, when Rorymania was already in full flow and after Clarke had been handed the honour of hitting the opening tee shot.

Three days later, Lowry was hitting his best opening round at a major and only behind J.B. Holmes (66) on the leaderboard.

“I feel like my game is where it’s at now (that) if I hit a bad shot, I feel like I can get myself out of trouble,’’ Lowry said. “It’s a great place to be in, to be honest. I hope it lasts for another while.’’

Lowry last made a splash at a major in 2016, when he took a four-shot lead into the final round of the U.S. Open. He closed with a 76 to finish tied for second behind Dustin Johnson but was still being talked about as the latest big

thing to come out of the island of Ireland, especially since he’d won the World Golf Championship at Firestone a year earlier.

A two-year slump cost him his U.S. PGA Tour card at the end of the 2018 season, but he won in Abu Dhabi in January for his first title since Firestone. He had an eighth place at the PGA Championship and is now in contention at the British Open.

“I was probably as nervous as I’ve been in quite a while on the first tee, almost ever,’’ Lowry said.

“Look, nerves are a good thing, aren’t they? It’s where you want to be. I just hope I’m nervous on Sunday afternoon out there. It’s right where you want to be and you have to tell yourself that when you’re there.’’

McIlroy said heightened expectations played no part in his 8-over 79 that has already ended any realistic chances of winning.

Clarke was even-par after Round 1. McDowell was plus-2.

Lowry did much of his prep work for this British Open two weeks ago, when he was over this way for the Irish Open in Lahinch.

He was 3 under at the turn and led outright after his fourth birdie of the day, at No. 10. A long, uphill putt for birdie at No. 12 put him back in thee lead after a bogey at the 11th, and he parred his way home over a challenging closing section where he got some breaks but also had some near misses.

He missed the 16th green, but almost chipped in for birdie from Locke’s Hollow. His birdie putt was a couple of centimetres short at No. 17. He got up and down from a greenside bunker at the last hole.

Lowry, from Clara, Ireland, has missed the cut in his last four appearances at the British Open.

Come Sunday, he could

become the fourth player from Ireland or Northern Ireland — after McIlroy, Clarke and Padraig Harrington — to lift the Claret Jug in the past 11 years.

“The crowds are unbelievable and cheered on every tee box, and every green is such a special feeling,’’ Lowry said. “I tried to enjoy that as much as I can while I was doing my work and then getting down to business.

“It’s going to be an exciting few days ahead.’’

Mykl Drabiuk, one of the Kamloops Venom’s top players, was helped off the floor, hobbled and clearly in pain while shuffling toward the bench after South Okanagan Flames’ runner Ben Olsen felled him with a high stick.

While Drabiuk collected himself, the Venom went to work on the power play, scoring once. A few minutes later, the Snakes struck again on the power play, this time with a two-man advantage after two careless penalties were taken on one shift, by Sammy Gabriel and Logan Cote of the Flames.

Those few minutes in the latter half of the second period told a great deal of the tale from Game 3 of the best-of-five Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League final, played on Tuesday in front of about 250 fans at Memorial Arena — the Venom were not down and out, eager to pull themselves off of the canvas, and special teams are of paramount importance in this championship clash.

Nimmo, who led the TOJLL in the playoffs in points (31), goals (14) and assists (17) as of Wednesday, had four goals on Tuesday, including three on the power play, each nearly a carbon copy of the last.

“When you’re at the top, you have so much you can see, all the angles, and it’s a guessing game with the goalie, trying to picture where he is not going to be when you shoot it,” Nimmo said.

Watson, who made timely saves, including a wonderful glove stop with the score tight in the third period, can only guess when screened on the penalty kill, and

can’t always guess right.

Venom standout Trey Dergousoff followed two of his three goals with understated-yetswashbucking celebrations, one in which he feigned ripping his jersey open to reveal the Superman logo. The other saw him break briefly into a gloating strut.

Dergousoff added a pair of assists, Tanner Koroluk pitched in with three helpers, Jordan Bunce returned from a concussion to net two goals and Mason Suppanz, Callum Gorman, Mack Stead and Ryan Wightman notched one goal apiece.

“These past few games were tough to watch, especially seeing the boys go down two,” Bunce said. “I thought it was a great time

to come back.

“We’re looking forward to trying to take it back here on Saturday. That’s the dream right now.”

Cairo Rogers scored twice for the Flames, with Zander Torres adding a single and five assists in support of goaltender Shaun Agostinho, who stopped 40 shots in a losing effort.

The visitors finished with 25 minutes of penalty time, while the home team racked up 14 penalty minutes.

“We’ve just got to stay out of the box,” said Nimmo, who had three assists in a seven-point night. “We took a lot of costly penalties right at the end of the game.

“I wish we could have closed it out tonight, but I think the boys should come fired up on Thursday, hoping to catch them with some bus legs instead of them catching us.”

Stead wanted to drive home on Thursday night dreaming of a championship-clinching victory in the Snake Pit. “They score 90 per cent of their goals on the power play,” Stead said. “We have to stay disciplined and we will beat them 5-on-5.

GWANGJU, South Korea — Canada’s diving team earned another two spots at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after Pamela Ware and Jennifer Abel qualified for the final of the women’s three-metre springboard on Thursday at the FINA world aquatics championships.

Dragon boaters win at festival The Kamloops Dragon Boat Club’s mixed team of men and women, Team Extreme, earned gold at a festival in Vernon last Saturday.

Kamloops reached the A final, in which it edged the second-place team by seven tenths of a second to finish atop the podium.

New paddlers are welcome to join the club, which has headquarters in Pioneer Park.

Practices begin at 5:30 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday evenings and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings.

SWIMMERS IN FORM Kamloops Tsunami Swim Club athletes competed last weekend at the Penticton Invitational Swim Meet, recording 51 top-five finishes in individual events.

Finishing among the top three overall in their respective divisions were Ashley Bagabuyo, who claimed gold, Claire Bagabuyo and Jared Roberts, who snared silver, and Kayleigh Roberts, who earned bronze.

The City of Kamloops received a $2,000 grant from the B.C. Recreation and Parks Association for the event, which is free to attend and will feature sports offered in the 55-plus B.C. Games cycle.

WIN ONE, LOSE ONE The Kamloops RiverDogs split a pair of 13-and-under B.C. Minor Baseball Association games last Saturday in North Vancouver.

Kamloops fell 6-3 to the league’s first-place team, the North Shore Padres, in Game 1.

Jace Koskimaki was on the mound for the Dogs, giving up six hits in six innings of work, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Ryder Corsi’s fourth home run of the season helped push Kamloops to a 6-5 victory over the Cloverdale Spurs in Game 2.

The Dogs have two wins and six losses this season.

PROWLERS’ REVENGE?

Frenchy’s Prowlers were one victory shy of vengeance.

The Kamloops Major Men’s Fastball League squad, which lost to the HD Bombers in the 2017 and 2018 championship series, tied this year’s best-ofthree final, a rematch of the last two, with a 10-8 victory on Tuesday.

I

t is now quite common for public gatherings to start with an acknowledgement of traditional territory.

Sometimes an Aboriginal elder is invited to say a prayer. Over time, I’ve grown to appreciate these beginnings.

The prayers I’ve witnessed express gratitude to the Creator, with reverence and humility that is seldom observed.

Christians don’t always position themselves before God in this way. Dress for worship is casual. Prayers are chummy and familiar. More people are checking their phones than quieting their hearts and minds (let alone kneeling).

This is perhaps a danger inherent in Christianity.

While some religions emphasize God’s transcendence (that is, God’s “otherness”), Christians also emphasize God’s immanence (God’s “nearness”).

The incarnation is about God moving into the neighbourhood, the son of God walking among us, getting sand stuck between his toes.

This god who stoops to come near is a central tenant of Christianity. But at its best, Christianity doesn’t let go of God’s transcendence to embrace God’s immanence.

Our scripture points to a god who is both majestic and maternal.

In the biblical Book of Job, we encounter a man who has been abused by life. In a quick

succession of tragic events, he loses his health, his wealth and his children.

After listening to his friends, this brazen, but broken man demands God account for his pain and suffering.

To everyone’s surprise, God appears. The response God offers, however, is not what Job expects.

In what is probably the most ancient of all the biblical creation stories, God asks Job to reconsider his indictment: “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?

Tell me, if you understand.

Who marked off its dimensions? Surely, you know!

Who stretched a measuring line across it?

“Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place, that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it? (selected verses from Job 38 New International Version) After hearing God’s testimony (and that testimony goes on

for a couple of chapters), Job is awestruck and suitably humbled. The Bible clearly upholds the “otherness” of the Creator.

And, surprising to some, the Bible does the same for Jesus.

While Jesus has been reduced in many imaginations to a gentle spirit who waxed poetically about love, the Bible gives him more street cred.

In the Gospels, we meet an exorcist who casts out demons, a teacher who curses clergy and a miracle worker who commands storms. When his disciples watch him perform the latter, we are told that they were terrified (see Mark 4:41).

I didn’t see a lot of awe and wonder among the Christians I grew up with or the services I sometimes visit. But it still exists — in small pockets.

I observe it when my elders pray. Like those prayers from the Aboriginal elders I mentioned, their prayers are also marked by humility and awe.

This inspires me.

This inspires me because, deep in my soul, I am looking for a God that is bigger than me.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Daryl James McLachlan on June 6, 2019.

Over the last few years he had been fighting the aftermath of stroke and Kidney failure. He passed peacefully at home in his sleep.

Born on July 18, 1946 in Nelson, BC. Daryl is survived by his loving wife Linda Mclachlan, daughters Mary Jane, Stacey, son Rodney, step-son Garrett, grandchildren Megan, Austin, Jacobi, loving sisters Fran Marcott, Grace Gould and of course fishing buddy Bear who was by his side till the end.

Daryl first started out as a Jeweller in Nelson for the family business. Throughout the years he had a various occupation ending with his longest lasting career as a miner. He retired from Highland Valley Copper in 2011 and enjoyed his retirement hunting and fishing.

We would like to thank Dr. Sodenburgs office in Merritt for all their help and the nurses at the renal unit at Royal Inland Hospital.

He will be greatly missed by all.

Mary Smith Mary Smith died on September 22, 2018 at the Gemstone Care Centre in Kamloops. Mary was born on September 17, 1922 in Muldare, Alberta. She married Henry William Smith on October 22, 1939 in Marwayne, Alberta. They moved to Moose Jaw and later to Trenton, Ontario while Henry served in the RCAF from 1942 - 1945. They returned to Moose Jaw where Henry built a house and they started their family of four boys.

Mary was quietly proud of her boys and supported them in their endeavours. She enjoyed the company of friends and her sister Helen as they shared the toils and joys of family life. The family moved to Regina in 1964. Mary enjoyed her work in the catalogue section of Sears so an unexplained adjustment in her real age delayed mandatory retirement. After learning to drive at age 75, she got her Saskatchewan driver’s licence.

She sold her Ford Tempo and gave up driving when in 2003 she moved to Kamloops to be close to some of the family.

Mary enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening, word searches, jigsaw puzzles and afternoon tea. She had her own sense of humour. She regularly attended church wherever she lived. Her last church family was St. Paul’s Cathedral in Kamloops. Ponderosa Place was her first home in Kamloops. There she found many new friends. The need for more care led to moves to the Renaissance (Chartwell Kamloops), Pine Grove Lodge and the Gemstone.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all the staff who cared for her. We give a special acknowledgement to those who made Mary feel special.

James (Jamie) Lee Scott James Lee Scott (Jamie) passed away peacefully on July 9, 2019 at the Trinity Care Unit in Kamloops, BC after a nine month battle with Cancer at the age of 58.

He is survived by his beloved wife Carol, daughter Caylen (Brett), son Bryden (Melissa), sister Heather (Oliver), brother Clayton (Donna), mother Lorraine, father Jack, nephews Riley and Callum, mother-in-law Lorraine, sisters-in-law Sandra (Brad) and Dini (Eric) and Linda. Along with his many other extended family members and close friends.

Jamie was born on April 2, 1961 in Kamloops, BC where he lived for the majority of his life.

He worked for CN Rail as a track supervisor for 35 years. He then enjoyed retirement for one year before returning to work at Universal Rail.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing and watching hockey as well as drinking rum with his long-time friends by the pool. He was a hardworking man, with an excellent sense of humour who wasn’t afraid to break the rules a little bit if it meant having a good time.

A huge thank you goes out to Dr. Jonat, Dr. Farren and all the doctors, nurses and care aids at RIH, the Cancer Clinic and Trinity Care.

Jamie will always be in our hearts and memories.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Coast Hotel and Conference Center, on Friday, July 19, 2019 at 11:00 am.

1970 - 2019 Robert “Bibbidy” Bauer, age 48, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 12, 2019 at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC. He was born on September 2, 1970. Predeceased by his mother Barbara Mary Bauer and left to mourn is his father Peter John Bauer, brothers and sister: Brian (Pamela), Janice (Tom), Bruce (Bonnie), Cliff (Ginette), nieces and nephews Robyn, Brooklyn, Mark, Scott, Matty, Nathaniel, Brooke and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Also left to mourn his passing is his beloved fur baby “Effa”, best friends Rachael Morris and Linda Fisher and countless friends who have become part of his extended family. Bob will also be very missed by his Total Vent Service crew and office staff.

We are very proud of Bob and his accomplishments in life. Bob was groomed and mentored by his cousin Del Bauer in the vent cleaning industry for almost 30 years. Bob was very proud of the success he achieved as owner operator of “Total Vent Service”.

He was very grateful for the opportunity and support Del Bauer gave to him. The family owes cousin Del an immense amount of gratitude for the support he has provided in this special time of need.

Bob enjoyed living life to its fullest, whether it was cooking, sledding, camping, fishing, concerts and travelling to numerous tropical destinations. Bob loved to entertain his friends at his home whether it was for dinner, a backyard ‘Gwar’bq or a movie night.

Bob was known to have an “open door policy” for his friends and their family members and was always there when they needed him.

Bob’s love of family, friends and people in general, having a heart that burst with care and compassion, as well as a quick razor sharp wit made him larger than life itself and unforgettable to the folks he touched. His generosity continues as he will be an organ donor for BC Transplant.

The Bauer family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the ICU staff at Royal Inland Hospital. This remarkable group of healthcare professionals provided strength and support to Bob and the family during their time of need. The Bauer’s cannot thank them enough.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday July 20, 2019 at the OLPH gymnasium located at 635 Tranquille Road, Kamloops BC at 1:00 pm, with refreshments to follow.

It is with great sadness that the family of Kathy Butterfield announces her passing on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at the age of 66 years in Kamloops, BC after battling early onset Alzheimers disease for almost a decade.

Kathy was predeceased by her parents George and Ellen Bruner. She will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 47 years Frank and children Tara (Ryan), Val (Jimmy) and Kenny (Maria). Kathy will be greatly missed by her seven grandchildren Kai, Kole, Kali, Cohen, Keyo, Keeden and Keirson, her brothers Larry (Barb), Ken (Joy), Keith (Rose) and sister-in-law Julie.

Kathy will be fondly remembered for her big laugh and outgoing personality. She was a lifelong lover of reading, curling, baseball and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Keith Kay Strate 1928 - 2019

Keith Kay Strate of Kamloops, BC passed away peacefully on July 4, 2019 at 90 years of age. Friends and family who knew Keith well called him “Kay.” He is survived by his loving wife Rita, his sister June Welling of Desert Hot Springs, California and his children from his former wife Georgina Nickolson, Doug (Monique), Karen (Ron) Irnie, Mark (Heather) and Bob (Sandra).

He is also survived by his step-children Tammy (Chad) Miller, Shane Kurki, as well as grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Keith has been a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served as Bishop for a period of time and gave of his time to serve in other auxiliary positions. He was always ready to serve and help those in need.

Keith was born to parents Clarence Henry Strate and Esther Pack on December 17, 1928 in Cardston, Alberta. His family lived in Hillspring, Alberta till he was 4 years old, then his mother wanted to join her husband Clarence, who at the time was working in Edmonton, so she loaded up the family and all their belongings in a 1929 Ford that belonged to Uncle Forrest and they arrived in Edmonton on October 31st, much to the delightful surprise of her husband.

Kay’s love for hockey began at the early age of 6, his passion for hockey led to a career with the Edmonton Flyers as a forward.

In his 11th year of school, he began to sell insurance for Western Savings and Loan for a couple of years and then he purchased the Leach Tire Store in Lloydminster, Alberta which would be renamed a couple of years later as the Civic Tire Store.

Kay would use his entrepreneurial spirit to purchase Tire stores in Vegreville and Wetaskiwin, Alberta and Fort St. John, BC. In order to keep in close contact with his employees at the different Tire store locations, Kay decided to learn to fly an airplane.

Kay retired early in his life at the age of 42, he then bought the ranch property at Campbell Creek in the Dallas region of Kamloops and raised some cattle and enjoyed the farming life which was close to his heart. On trips to Alberta with his wife Rita, he would comment on the hay fields and how he loved the farmland.

Kay enjoyed so many hobbies and was a skilled craftsman. He built a carpentry workshop where he could make numerous projects for family and friends. His love of carpentry was handed down to him from watching and helping his own father at an early age with carpentry projects.

He loved hunting and fishing trips with his father and friends which always produced plenty of food to share with everyone.

He was able to build an airplane with his sons Mark and Bob, which was a seven year project. Often he spoke of the 23,000 rivets that went into the structure of the plane.

Kay was a spontaneous spirit, open to new adventures and willing to try something new.

He was an avid golfer and he read many books and articles on how to improve his golf game. His step-son Shane Kurki named him “Coach”, as he shared tips that would help Shane improve his golf game.

Kay enjoyed his chocolate projects, his skill of chocolate making was passed down from his mother Esther, who would make many hundreds of pounds of chocolates every year to sell, so that she could buy Christmas gifts for her family. What Kay enjoyed the most about making chocolates, was the giving of them to his friends. He loved the comments people made of the chocolates and how people’s faces lit up as he shared his love of chocolates with them.

He was also known well for his gardening skills, this too was nourished at an early age as he tended numerous family gardens.

He really enjoyed a “weed free” garden. Kay was also known as the “Tomato King”, he knew the special care that growing tomatoes required.

Kay was a good dancer, he enjoyed upbeat music, laughter, jokes, playing cards, he was a tease, he gained great pleasure in serving and helping others. If someone was in need, Kay was close by to lend a helping hand.

He was also a private man, sensitive, very loving and caring, quick to apologize and always had a happy smile, he was a positive spirit who was always ready to uplift and cheer. He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him but lovingly remembered.

Kay was a true gentleman.

Funeral Services for Keith Kay Strate will be held at 11:00 am in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2165 Parkcrest Avenue, on Saturday, July 20, 2019.

A luncheon will follow the service and then the Interment will be held after and will take place at Hillside Cemetery, 750 Notre Dame Drive.

Sincere expressions of gratitude and love to the Palliative, Hospice and Community Care nurses of Kamloops who made every effort possible to ensure Keith’s comfort was met with gentleness and love.

Keith was so grateful to have found Dr. Malan as his family doctor, he thought of Dr. Malan as a good friend and Dr. Malan’s watchful eye was always over Keith’s best interest. Thank-you all so very much for all that you did to help Keith.
