TERRIFIC TRU-TAUGHT TOY-SIDE MANNER
ALLEN DOUGLAS/KTW
Thompson Rivers University nursing student Julia Mercuri listens to four-year-old Ryder Campbell talk about his toy friend during the annual Teddy Bear picnic on Saturday at the downtown library. The event saw first-year nursing students interact with kids. The children were able to learn how to care for their beloved stuffies, while the nurses-to-be used the clinic as a way to hone the technical skills they have learned and to practise their bedside manner.

The past two years have marked two of the worst wildfire seasons on record, with more than 2.5-million hectares of the province scorched by wildfire in 2017 and 2018 and nearly $1.2 billion spent fighting those fires. In response, the provincial government is spending more money to prevent and respond to wildfires and, among other improvements, has pledged more firefighters to combat the coming blazes. “We learned a lot about what we’re doing right and where we can improve,” said B.C. Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Minister Doug Donaldson, who was in Kamloops on Tuesday. Some of the most substantial changes being made include making more crews available and more training initiatives for Type 2 (contract) and Type 3 (emergency) firefighters. Another is better integration of air support from helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, which will also be made available earlier in the wildfire season. Technology new to the wildfire service will also be piloted this year. See FIGHTING FIRES, A4
