ALBERTA STEEL IN KAMLOOPS
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley addressed a convention of Western Canadian United Steelworkers in Kamloops on Wednesday. The event resembled a campaign rally and was held shortly after the NDP premier announced she will be running in the Alberta election, which will take place on May 31. Notley spoke on the need for the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion to proceed, saying, “It’s absolutely what needs to happen to create jobs and build prosperity for all of Canada and what we are doing right now is tying our hands behind our back in a way that just makes no economic sense.” To read more on Notley’s visit, turn to page A12. TENTATIVE DEAL REACHED IN CASINO STRIKE MICHAEL POTESTIO STAFF REPORTER michael@kamloopsthisweek.com
A tentative deal has been struck between Gateway Casinos and the BC Government Services Employees’ Union after striking workers spent more than four months on the picket line. The agreement was reached at about 3 a.m. on Thursday after what the union described as marathon talks over the past two weeks. Details of the agreement are being withheld until it’s ratified. The picket lines will remain in place until that process is complete. “We need to make sure members understand the tentative deal and get a chance to vote before we release any details publicly,” said BCGEU president Stephanie Smith. Gateway spokesperson Tanya Gabara replied via email to KTW, confirming a tentative deal is in place. “We have no further comment while our employees review the terms of the tentative agreement and while
we wait for the union to provide further details regarding ratification,” the email stated. More than 675 employees at four casinos in Kamloops, Kelowna, Penticton and Vernon have been without a new contract since September 2017. They went on strike on June 29 of this year. The BCGEU had been fairly quiet about the negotiations in recent weeks because it wanted to focus on talks at the bargaining table, a union spokesperson said, with wages the primary sticking point. When labour action began, Gateway issued a statement claiming the union was seeking an average 62 per cent wage increase across the board, which it described as not reasonable. “If you have people that are currently at minimum-wage levels, which they are, then those increases are necessary simply to bring them in line with industry standards,” Smith told KTW in response at the time.
