The City of Kamloops and the Tk’emlups Indian Band councils have reached an agreement that could see the former Stuart Wood elementary become a cultural centre. Acting TIB Chief Viola Thomas said the band and city council made a joint submission to Attorney General David Eby on the former school’s future use and are waiting for word back. tudents from Jeremy Reid’s social studies class are roaming the halls during last block on Friday afternoon. They are not, however, skipping out on current events. Instead, they are calling on students and staff at Westsyde secondary to sign a petition to help lower B.C.’s voting age to 16 from 18. “It’s evidence that people want it,” said 16-yearold Caitlyn Gilbert. The petition is part of a school project turned political campaign that began last year in Reid’s Grade 11 class. It continued this year with a new cohort of students eager to continue the work of their peers.

like to utilize that space.” School District 73 closed the school in June 2016, at which time it reverted to the city’s control. However, due to an agreement made by the city and province more than a century ago, the building must be used for educational purposes or it reverts to Victoria’s control. Because the school is on Crown land, Kamloops is required to consult with the Tk’emlups band on future uses. The heritage building at Battle Street and Third Avenue has been empty since closing, with the gym now being used as a winter shelter for homeless. Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian said a Stuart Wood cultural centre could celebrate the history of both communities, as well as Thompson Rivers University’s contribution to diversifying the

city’s population. He suggested a public plaza as part of the transformation. Thomas said the band also has plans to bring artifacts now in the hands of private collectors or museums back to Tk’emlups territory using repatriation funding from the province. Those items could come to Stuart Wood. “We have, for example, down in the New York museum, we have a very sacred pipe that comes from our territory,” Thomas said. “I would love to bring that sacred pipe home to where it belongs.” Thomas said the two governments will also look to the province and federal government for funding to bring the heritage building up to required standards of accessibility and functionality, noting Ottawa has expressed interest in funding heritage projects.
