Accidents on the Coquihalla, like this one south of Kamloops in 2010, become more frequent when winter conditions are in effect. As of Oct. 1, winter tires are mandatory on most B.C. highways.

I

f you are planning a trip on the Coquihalla Highway or Okanagan Connector, make sure you are doing so with winter tires on your vehicle. Winter tire regulations came into effect on Oct. 1, with drivers required to have winter tires on their vehicles if they are travelling on designated highways around the province. Those designated routes include the Coquihalla and the Okanagan Connector. “People may experience sunny and warm conditions when they set out, but run into heavy rain, snow or sleet along the way,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena. “That’s why it’s important to ensure your vehicle is properly equipped with snow tires with the mountain snowflake or mud and

snow symbol, along with good solid treads.” In B.C., winter tires are defined as those labelled with either the mountain snowflake symbol or the mud and snow (M+S) sym-

bol. The symbol is located on the sidewall of the tire. Winter tires must be in good condition with a minimum tread depth of 3.5 millimetres.

• B.C. drivers who do not have winter tires on their vehicle on designated routes can be subject to a fine of $121. • B.C. drivers who do not have the minimum tread depth of 3.5 millimetres on designated routes can be subject to a fine of $109. • Vehicle features like all-wheel drive, traction control, anti-lock braking and electronic stability control do not increase the grip between tires and icy, snowy or slushy roadways. • Being alert and attentive behind the wheel is important in all driving conditions, winter included, no matter the condition of tires. • In winter driving conditions, every vehicle requires more time to stop.

‘Fat bikes’ allow avid cyclists opportunity to conquer winter snow ROAD TO ADVENTURE

PORTLAND, Maine — Gone are the days when cyclists had to put away their bikes for the winter. These days, hard-core riders are staying outdoors year round thanks to “fat bikes’’ that allow them to conquer winter’s worst instead of staying indoors on a stationary bike. The bikes, with comically large tires, have come into the mainstream in the past couple of years, after being introduced about a decade ago. John Grondin, 48, of Scarborough, Me., got his fat bike to kick the winter blues. “I wanted to get outside and ride in the winter,’’ he said. “I like to ride, period. I’ll ride a road bike. I’ll ride a mountain bike. I just want to ride.’’ The ginormous tires are wide enough to float over snow and bounce over obstacles. Groomed snowmobile trails provide miles and miles of winter riding. Fat bikes represent the first major bicycle trend in several decades, after BMX bikes in the 1970s and conventional mountain bikes in the 1980s, said Jay Townley, partner in Pennsylvania-based Gluskin-Townley Group, a consultant and market research company focusing on the bicycle business. Growth in the segment has provided something to cheer about for bike retailers and has prevented a slide in bike sales, which number about 18-million units a year, he said. “The industry, quite frankly, needed something. If anything, the fat tire bike helped to keep a stable bike industry instead of losing volume,’’ he said. The NPD Group, which tracks retail sales of bikes in the U.S., reports fat tire bike sales have grown eightfold in the past three years, to US$74.7 million in 2016. The growing popularity can be seen at fat bike races. Every winter weekend there are races and festivals across the U.S. snowbelt. Dozens of riders braved single-digit temperatures last February for the Sugarloaf Fat Tire Festival at Maine’s tallest ski mountain. The bikes aren’t cheap. Purchased at an independent bike shop, they can easily top $1,000 and the price goes up from there. But less-costly versions are being sold these days at big-box retailers like WalMart. Bike shops appreciate the extra business during what’s typically a slow time of the year. The Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop used to close for the winter but is now offering fat bike rentals for riding inside Maine’s Acadia National Park. Cyclists can ride their fat bikes even if there’s a lack of snow that sidelines snowmobiles and cross-country skiers and others winter sports, said shop manager Adam Gariepy. Range Morton, sales manager at Gorham Bike and Ski in Portland, Me., said fat bike sales creep upward when there’s a lack of snow that leads to a corresponding decrease in ski sales. “The fat bikes really help us to get through the winter,’’ Morton said.

So-called “fat bikes” are becoming increasingly popular with cyclists looking to stay on two wheels even in snowy conditions.

“They were a big help last year and this year.’’ David Crowell, of Laconia, N.H., said riding takes him back to his childhood, except that he couldn’t afford a $5,000 carbon-fiber bike when he was 12.

Getting outdoors, there’s a sense of freedom and, perhaps, a bit of danger. After all, there’s no way to avoid the occasional spill while bombing around in the snow. Thankfully, riders note, snow hurts less than pavement in a crash.

“There’s something about those big fat tires — they tend to put a grin on people’s faces,’’ Crowell, 47, said. “It’s like being a kid. You’re out there doing something. Maybe you shouldn’t be doing it, but you’re doing it anyway.’’

here is something about waterfalls that calms the spirit. If you need some peace of mind, spend the day in Wells Gray Provincial Park, which is next to Clearwater — a 90-minute drive from Kamloops on Highway 5 North. Nicknamed Canada’s Waterfalls Park, Wells Gray has 39 waterfalls within its boundaries and many more if you count the numerous creeks that cascade down the mountainsides. It was named after Minister of Lands Arthur Wellesley Gray, who recognized the growing need to preserve special places in British Columbia. In 1939, a forest ranger near Clearwater, Bill Noble, recommended the area be turned into a park and, on Nov. 28, 1939, Gray passed an order-in-council creating a huge park around most of the drainage basin of the Clearwater River. After a quick stop at the tourist centre to pick up a free map, make your way to Spahats Creek Falls, a 197-foot-tall waterfall on Spahats Creek that drops into the Granite Canyon of the Clearwater River. Spahats is the First Nations term for bear and the creek was called Bear Creek in the 1950s, but due to the large number of Bear Creeks in B.C., the name Spahats was adopted in the late 1960s. From there, drive a little farther up the road until you reach the trail head for Moul Falls. A one-hour hike will take you to the third-highest waterfall in the park and the only one people can stand behind. It was named after Charlie Moul, one of the areas earliest settlers (he left Clearwater Valley in 1914 to serve in the First World War and never returned). People can walk behind the falls to view them from inside a large cave. Although the experience will leave you soaked, it is well worth it. The next major stop is Dawson Falls, where a 10-minute walk will get you to the main viewpoint and another couple minutes will get you to the top. At Dawson Falls, the Murtle River drops over lava flows dating back about 20,000 years. Next, stop for a picnic lunch at Helmcken Falls. This 141-metre (463-foot) waterfall on the Murtle River is the fourth-tallest in Canada and one of the reasons for the creation of Wells Gray Park. This name honours John Sebastian Helmcken, a physician with the Hudson’s Bay Company who arrived in Victoria in 1850. He helped bring British Columbia into Confederation in 1871. Helmcken died in 1920 at the age of 95, but never saw the falls that bear his name. The falls are a must-see in the winter, when the area surrounding the foot of the falls freezes and water drops into a basin of snow. If you are visiting in the fall, the highlight of your day will no doubt be the next stop, Bailey’s Chute, where countless chinook salmon attempt to jump the falls on their way to their spawning grounds. The road ends at Clearwater Lake — one of six large lakes in the park. — with information from local Wells Gray expert Roland Neave, whose book, Exploring Wells Gray Park, is a must-have for those wishing to learn more about the majestic place.

oad and weather conditions change quickly during winter. Drivers should be prepared to adjust behaviours to match the conditions and address potential hazards. On average each year in British Columbia, the number of casualty crashes due to driving too fast for conditions doubles in December compared to October — about 236 crashes in December compared to about 117 in October, according to ICBC Annual Average Casualty Crashes due to Driving too Fast for Conditions 2011-2015 police reported data. Drivers are encouraged to take simple measures like being well-rested, maintaining a full windshield-washer fluid tank, having sunglasses handy, dressing for the conditions outside, checking the weather forecast before leaving and having winter tires. For longer trips in winter conditions, drivers should let someone know when they plan to arrive and have first-aid supplies and food and water on hand. Drivers are also encouraged to keep their gas tank more than half full. Winter road and weather conditions change quickly — so should your driving.

Drivers are encouraged to take extra steps to make sure they stay safe when on B.C. roads in winter conditions. Collisions spike as conditions worsen.

he leaves are starting to change colour, which means snow is just around the corner. It’s good news for those who see the fluffy white stuff as an opportunity to play. The Kamloops Snowmobile Association (KSA) is a non-profit society formed in 1970 to promote safe, responsible recreational snowmobiling. Membership in the KSA fluctuates annually between 200 and 400 members. For more than 40 years, the KSA has represented the Kamloops area recreational snowmobile community in various government processes, which has led to securing a variety of riding areas. The KSA sponsors certified avalanchetraining courses and snowmobile safety-

training courses for riders. The KSA has also been very active with the provincial level of snowmobiling in B.C. In 2006, the KSA and 16 other snow-

mobile clubs formed a new provincial organization — the Association of British Columbia Snowmobile Clubs, known as ABC Snowmobile Clubs.

This action was taken as it was widely recognized there was no benefit to KSA members from ongoing expensive membership in the old provincial organization. ABC Snowmobile Clubs has been a resounding success on every level for all its members. When you join the KSA, you also join ABC Snowmobile Clubs, which, through their insurer, insures the KSA. You get access to quality insurance at the best prices in the province and support safe responsible snowmobiling, which will provide quality snowmobiling opportunities for future generations. Memberships reasonably priced in the KSA are available at all local snowmobile dealerships. EATING WELL: Dehydrate meals cooked at home for next adventure ROAD TO ADVENTURE

W

hen she sets up camp at the end of a long day of hiking in the Rocky Mountains, the last thing Renee Botta wants to do is cook. So she doesn’t. Instead, Botta pulls out a collection of plastic freezer bags, chooses that night’s fare, then boils water. Her fellow backpackers — often in the wilderness together for a week or more — couldn’t be more pleased. Instead of another round of peanut butter on tortillas or handfuls of mixed nuts and chocolate — two backcountry staples — Botta, of Evergreen, Colo., will make a pot of curry sweet potato stew, red curry lentil stew, homemade guacamole or backcountry burritos. All it takes is adding hot water and waiting. “Basically any food out there can be dehydrated,” she says. Botta has been dehydrating fruits and

vegetables — later moving into entire meals — for 30 years. The meals are ideal not only for hikers, but also for snowmobilers, campers or ice fishers. The process of removing the liquid from food is simple enough, and can be done in the oven or with a dehydration machine, which ranges in price from $40 to more than $100. “There are really fancy dehydrators out there, but I don’t have one,” Botta said. “You don’t need it.” As a vegetarian, she doesn’t dehydrate meat. While that’s doable, Botta buys packets of freeze-dried chicken or beef from online sites such as Packit Gourmet for her hiking friends to add to their meals. The University of Denver professor of health communication turns to favourite websites — Backpacking Chef is one, Dirty Gourmet is another — for recipes. She recommends those sites for beginners interested in learning about dehydrating meals. Glenn McAllister, who divides his time between Zurich, Switzerland, and Waleska, Ga., launched the Backpacking Chef a decade ago to share his passion for dehy-

drating food. He lists recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts and shares three- to eight-day menus for long camping trips. McAllister came to his vocation as Botta did: He needed lightweight, good-tasting fuel for long backpacking trips. He tries to include vegetables, a starch such as rice, and a meat or other protein in each meal, tying them together with bark: a starchy vegetable such as potatoes or beans that dehydrate into brittle chunks. When reconstituted, the bark becomes a flavourful sauce. “It flows through and connects all the meat, rice and vegetables in the meal,” he said. (He makes one with pumpkin that reconstitutes as a pudding and tastes like pie, McAllister said.) He has one hard-and-fast safety rule: Avoid fatty foods, such as pork, sausage and cheese. Use lean beef; avoid the fatty ground chuck. “It’s the fat that doesn’t really dry,” McAllister said. “If you have too much in there, it could go rancid on you.” His recipes are on his website and in

his self-published 2013 book, Recipes for Adventure: Healthy, Hearty and Homemade Backpacking Recipes. They include beef chili, stuffed green peppers, and macaroni and cheese. “I do a nice ratatouille and a very good risotto,” McAllister said. For longer trips, Botta recommends starting to dehydrate early — it can take 24 hours — and testing a new recipe first on an overnighter. While she prefers her own dehydrated meals, she said smaller companies such as Packit Gourmet of Austin, Tex., and Harmony House Foods Inc. of Franklin, N.C., make excellent prepackaged meals. Packit Gourmet grew out of Debbie and Jeff Mullins’ desire to keep a healthy diet during years of backpacking and canoeing trips with their two daughters. They started dehydrating food on screens set out in the sun at their Ontario wilderness cabin in the late 1970s. Debbie Mullins recommends starting simple. “If you have failure in the beginning, it ruins your experience,” she said.

American lawyer recounts ‘grubby’ backpacking trip through Interior ROAD TO ADVENTURE

W

hen Mark Yura first came to Kamloops, he was much younger, grubbier and hairier. It was early June of 1972 and the 19-year-old American had been travelling through the Pacific Northwest alongside Mark Landau, a pal who happened to share the same first name. The two Marks had just finished their freshman year at the University of Michigan when they decided “at the drop of a hat” to travel around the United States and Canada, packing a tent and camp stove and starting their seven-week adventure in Southern California. The backpacking duo made their way up the Coast to Vancouver Island, returned to the mainland due east and found themselves on the side of a road in the River City, trying to hitch a ride to Banff for a glimpse of Mount Rundle. That’s when a young family picked them up.

Mark Yura’s first trip through B.C. was as a backpacker. More than 40 years later, his second was aboard the Rocky Mountaineer.

“We were very grubby,” Yura, now 64, recalled. While unwilling to drive the Marks 500 kilometres to Alberta, the family — a husband, wife and several young children

— took the two strangers for dinner at a restaurant and invited them home for a shower and good night’s sleep. “They must have looked at us and thought we needed a good home-cooked meal,” Yura said. The next morning, the Marks continued on their “remarkable adventure,” back on the road to sleep outside and live off of only what they could carry. “They gave us a roof over our head, a warm shower and breakfast in the morning and sent us on our way,” Yura said. Of all the California beaches, nights under the stars in national parks and youthful shenanigans during a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, the hospitality they received in Kamloops stuck — a strong message about embracing other people that came at the right time. “I’ve never really forgotten it,” Yura said. “It was something I thought at the time was really special. . . . I have always kind of held that memory pretty closely as a nice example of people’s warm-heartedness.” Yura contacted KTW with the hopes of reconnecting with the family dur-

ing a chance return trip to Kamloops in September. He and wife Wendy booked a Rocky Mountaineer rail trip from Vancouver to Alberta to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary, and Yura later realized the trip made a one-night stop in Kamloops. “As soon as I realized, I thought, ‘This can’t be entirely a coincidence,’” Yura said. This trip to Kamloops was different for Yura. First, Landau wasn’t travelling with him, though the two do still stay in touch. Landau became a lawyer, too, though he went on to practise in Michigan. They have attended each other’s kids’ weddings over the years and have future travel plans together. As for accommodations, Yura and Wendy were comfortable aboard the Rocky Mountaineer train, a well-established, guided trip that draws international travellers from around the world — including one former grubby backpacker, whose tent will this time stay at home. “I was smart enough not to even ask,” Yura said with a laugh.
