Milobar win means decision needed at city hall ANDREA KLASSEN STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

Mayor Peter Milobar will be back in his usual seat at city hall next Tuesday to tackle an unusual question — that of his resignation. As MLA-elect for Kamloops-North Thompson, Milobar has two options for the mayorship: Resign the posting now and trigger a byelection in the fall, or take an unpaid leave of absence until Jan. 1, when provincial rules no longer require the city to replace him. Milobar, who will return to council until he is sworn in as MLA in early June, said the conversation on which to choose begins Tuesday, when staff will present a report on the two outcomes. “It’s not quite as simple as maybe some in the public think it might be,” he said. “We’re dealing with provincial law and election law for how things unfold. It’s something we’ll need to give a bit of conversation to.” Milobar said he’s also hoping to hear more from the public about what course of action they would prefer. “We’ve heard from some who think an appointee should just happen, but I’ve also heard from many in the public who say a city of our size should have an elected mayor that the public picked,” he said. Milobar said he expects to have a “pretty good indication” of how to proceed by the end of council’s Tuesday meeting. Other councillors split along several lines. See DECISION, A6

Minority report for local Liberals CAM FORTEMS STAFF REPORTER cam@kamloopsthisweek.com

No matter how the numbers play out in the coming weeks, re-elected incumbent Todd Stone is confident he’ll be part of the government. “We’re moving forward,” he told KTW yesterday. “The people of B.C. have re-

elected a B.C. Liberal government — it’s a question of majority or minority.” While under the provincial ballot the Liberals are in a minority situation, Stone said there’s a strong possibility his party will win in Courtenay-Comox, where incumbent New Democrat RonnaRae Leonard defeated B.C. Liberal Jim Benninger by nine votes.

Still uncounted are absentee ballots for the riding with a military base. “Our understanding is we have hundreds, if not thousands, in that riding alone . . . The vast majority tend to vote for us,” Stone said.
