It’s official — voters in the Kamloops-South Thompson and Kamloops-North Thompson ridings will choose between candidates from four parties when they go to the polls in the May 9 provincial election. Elections BC closed its nomination period on Tuesday, leaving eight people vying for the two seats in Kamloops. In addition to candidates from the three parties in the legislature — Green, Liberal and New Democrat

— are two Communist party candidates. A significant change from the election four years ago is the absence of B.C. Conservative candidates and the addition of two Green candidates. Derek Cook, a political scientist at Thompson Rivers University, said that political matrix could play a part in the local outcome, noting there is no party on the right to take votes from B.C. Liberals Todd Stone and Peter Milobar, while Green candidates threaten to take away ballots from New Democrats Nancy Bepple and

Barb Nederpel. Recent polling on Vancouver Island, however, found the Greens have gained support at the expense of the Liberals. Cook said that could also play out in the Kamloops ridings if voters are looking for true change that would be ushered in by Donovan Cavers (Kamloops-South) and Dan Hines (Kamloops-North), along with Greens across B.C. “I think it [Green support] will come from both parties,” Cook said. “But there’s no one else on the right to vote for.” See FRINGE PARTIES, A3

A man accused of driving a Jeep involved in the hit-and-run death of a Kamloops teenager late last year is back behind bars after being released last month on bail. Jason Gourlay was arrested on Vancouver Island on Tuesday and faces new charges of failure to reside as directed and failure to abide by house rules. He was staying in a drug-rehab facility, a living condition imposed when he was released on bail last month. A new bail hearing has been set for April 25. Gourlay, 41, was already charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident and possession of a controlled substance — namely heroin and fentanyl. He is accused of driving a vehicle that struck and killed 16-year-old Jennifer Gatey on Nov. 4, 2016, as she crossed Pacific Way near her family’s Aberdeen home. Gourlay’s Jeep was identified as having potentially been involved in Gatey’s death within days of the hit and run. It was seized by police and forensic evi-

Before being released, he was assaulted by fellow inmates at Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre. A condition of Gourlay’s $20,000 cash bail required him to live in the rehab facility in Nanaimo, after which was to live with his uncle in Maple Ridge and not operate a vehicle.
