The three parties represented in the legislature, along with the only B.C. Communist members running in B.C. thus far, will vie for the Kamloops seats in the run-up to the May 9 provincial election.

Premier Christy Clark was scheduled to call for an election today by asking Lieut.-Gov. Judith Guichon to dissolve the legislature and drop the writ, kicking off the official 28-day campaign.

Opposition New Democrats want voters to see a tired government addicted to corporate fundraising, while the B.C. Liberals are focusing on jobs and the economy.

The Greens offer what they portray as a fresh alternative with a serious local campaign, while the two Communists say they will be joined by others.

The six men and two women vying for votes in Kamloops are now in full campaign mode, doing more of what they’ve already been doing for months.

Barb Nederpel, the New Democrat candidate in Kamloops-North Thompson, has been on leave from her job in health care for the past three weeks.

“I’ve been campaigning since September . . . We’re going 100 per cent right now,” she said.

“We have a great campaign team behind us with a lot of energy.”

The NDP traditionally brings in experienced campaign managers from outside of B.C. In this case, Trevor Zimmerman, an Alberta New Democrat, will run her campaign.

Nederpel called him a friend with whom she has previously campaigned on health-care issues.

“Hands down, the No. 1 issue is health care,” Nederpel said.

“We’re [Kamloops] ground zero in the province . . . I’ve seen the impact first hand: 16 years of cuts and mismanagement by this government. That’s what convinced me to get involved.”

The City of Kamloops says increases to RCMP pay announced by the federal government last week won’t shake up its budgeting plan for 2017.

special constables, will receive retroactive pay raises of 1.25 per cent, effective January 2015 and January 2016, and another 2.3 per cent market adjustment effective April 2016.

Goodale said in a release the increases bring Mounties’ pay in line with that of other police forces in the country.

City of Kamloops director of corporate services and

community safety David Duckworth said the city has been watching media reports on the pay changes closely and was able to draft a police budget that covers the salary increases.

Retroactive pay will come from the city’s police reserve fund.

“Based on what they got, we’re good,” Duckworth said.

Office of the Ombudsperson has rejected a complaint from a Kamloops resident that Mayor Peter Milobar was and is in a perceived conflict of interest while taking part in a council debate on the proposed Ajax mine while in his role as mayor and B.C. Police have made public the fact they are looking into the murder of a Kamloops man south of Barnhartvale — months after their investigation began and more than six months after the killing took place.

This is the first time Mounties have acknowledged there was a murder near Barnhartvale last summer as they did not reveal a killing had taken place when remains of the victim were found.

In a brief news release posted to Twitter on Friday afternoon, RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said Mounties are “continuing their investigation into the homicide death of Robert Leslie Gair.”

Releasing the name of a murder victim is not the norm for Mounties.

Investigators believe 52-year-old Gair, who was from Kamloops, was killed on or about Sept. 13, 2016. His body was found in the area of Robbins Range Road near Barnhartvale.

“Police believe that Robert Gair’s murder was not a random act and that there is no risk to the general public,” Moskaluk said in the release.

The release notes police had not publicly disclosed any information about the murder prior to Friday. It also asks for anyone with information to call the RCMP’s Southeast District major crimes unit.

Moskaluk told KTW he is not sure when the investigation began, only that police believe the incident took place on Sept. 13.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t have that.”

As for the victim’s name being made public — something that Mounties have been hesitant to do in recent years — Moskaluk said it

is ultimately up to investigators.

“With respect to criminal investigations in particular, the RCMP looks at whether the release of information including or excluding a name would enhance the investigation,” he said, noting the same thought process went into asking for tips from the public, even after keeping the investigation secret for seven months.

“We look at what we can release. We don’t want to exclude the possibility that information might be received at this point in the investigation.”

Moskaluk’s news release was tweeted at 1:10 p.m. on Friday — about 15 minutes after CFJC-TV posted a story on its website about the murder.

CFJC-TV told KTW its reporters had been asking Mounties for information for about a week prior to publishing the story.

There’s a simple reality with a heart attack that Dr. Shravan Nosib has seen too often.

“It’s not like cancer,” the cardiologist said. “Cancer is a slow killer. You have a heart attack and can die right then.

“It’s an acute insult to the heart. It’s sudden. It’s painful. It is an immediate threat to life.””

There’s more to the story, however, Nosib told the audience at the ICCHA Wish Fund dinner and fundraiser on Friday.

If someone comes to Royal Inland Hospital with a suspected heart attack, while medical staff there can take some steps, for full treatment they often must be sent to Kelowna General Hospital.

It has a catheter lab than can perform angioplasty, a process that can help widen narrowed or obstructed arteries that could be contributing to the heart trauma.

It serves the Interior region.

That means waiting to see if the Kelowna hospital can accept the patient, then transferring them by ambulance or, in rush situations, air ambulance to the community.

It all comes at a cost, Nosib said, to the person with the heart condition and to the taxpayers who are in essence funding all the costs of shipping the patient back and forth between Kamloops and Kelowna.

“It pains us that we cannot do more when we have the will,” Nosib said. “You cannot expect a student to write an essay when they don’t have a pen.

“We have the will. We have the passion. We do not have the tools.”

At the fundraiser, ICCHA creator Al Patel also spoke of the need for a cardiac unit. He joined with Nosib in praising Interior Health Authority’s plans to open a rapid-access cardiac examination [RACE] clinic for outpatients, but said “it’s not enough.”

It’s why he’s committed to raising $500,000 for the first step in what he hopes will be a plan to create a clinic. Patel hopes to have the money raised this year to help create a catheter lab.

Hospitals in Victoria, Kelowna, Vancouver and New Westminster now have the labs.

John O’Fee, chairman of the IHA board of directors, said Patel’s plan to buy equipment that could be used in a catheter lab is a good step but “there is a lot more to this than just purchasing a piece of equipment.”

He said beds and staffing would be required; the need would also have to be assessed to determine if RIH has “the necessary volumes of patients to support a second [Interior] site for this sort of service.”

O’Fee also spoke at the fundraiser, talking about progress that has been made in providing health care in the city.

Among the highlights he noted was the reality there will be six cardiologists in Kamloops by the end of the summer, an increase from the pair who performed that work just a few years ago.

IHA has established a 16-bed unit to monitor heart patients, started a cardiology on-call group, hired a clinical nurse specialist and increased patientcare co-ordination to 16 hours a day seven days a week.

IHA hopes to soon see cardiologists establish a Kamloopsbased private practice as well as providing care at RIH and to hire a clinical pharmacist who will support the care program.

A four-bed high-observation coronary care unit is being established, up from the two beds now in place, and staffing is being increased to work with the larger unit.

The rapid-access clinic is expected to be in place by fall.

“I am encouraged to see the establishment of the RACE clinic and the CCU,” O’Fee said.

“This is a big step forward in cardiac care. The desire to perform angioplasties in Kamloops is a further step that will require significant planning and resources in terms of space, staff, equipment and budget.”

Nosib and Patel are determined to see it happen.

Staff cleared after probe of retired doctor’s death

An internal investigation of the circumstances that saw retired doctor Rajindar Joneja die in the emergency department waiting room at Royal Inland Hospital last month found all protocols were followed.

However, said Chris Mazurkewich, chief executive officer for the Interior Health Authority, one staff member involved in the incident had to take stress leave as a result of online comments made on various socialmedia sites that included the story of Joneja’s death.

Mazurkewich said the appropriate protocols were followed.

Triage nurses must follow established guidelines on a standardized scale to assess symptoms and their urgency as they decide how to stream patients in the ER. Joneja, who would have been 83 on March 23, died on March 12 after his wife, Janice, took him to the RIH ER in pain and great distress. He had a history of congestive heart failure and survived cancer.

While at the ER, Joneja’s blood pressure was checked and he was

given two aspirin and sent to the waiting room, where he died a few minutes later, sitting in a wheelchair as his wife held him.

Mazurkewich said representatives from the health authority met with Janice earlier this week to discuss the review.

He declined to discuss the meeting, at which the investigation results were discussed.

Staff on duty during the incident were also called to a meeting to deal with the investigation’s results, learning no fault was found with their actions.

Mazurkewich acknowledged the trauma Joneja’s family and friends have felt from his death, expressing condolences from IHA. “It’s hard when those things happen,” he said.

Compounding the situation for his staff were comments made by people with no knowledge of the situation, he said.

He said nurses and doctors at RIH involved with Joneja’s visit and death “were significantly impacted by those comments,” including one employee who took a leave of absence because of comments made.

etting to the polls is easy enough. Find out about your riding, learn who your candidates are, turn up on the day of the vote and make your X on that paper.

But before you do that, you have to make up your mind. And we hope that you do it based on the issues.

In the coming weeks, leading up to the expected May 9 provincial election, we’ll be trying to give you as much information as we’re able to supply.

Not just about your candidates — though we hope to keep you apprised of their stands. Mostly, we want to spend the run-up to this election talking about the issues.

There is health and, in Kamloops, an acute lack of doctors, which has become the No. 1 issue in our online poll.

If you don’t have a family doctor in Kamloops, you literally can’t get one.

Our walk-in clinics have lines out the door early on many mornings, our ER is busy and local health officials are having trouble recruiting more docs.

Why we’ve reached this state, and what’s to be done, are questions to direct at the candidates.

We’ll be looking at several other big issues, and we hope that you’ll chime in.

We’ve always encouraged our local politicians to be responsive to the public during their whole terms. But their minds are never quite so focused on the wishes of their voters as they are right now.

For the next few weeks, voters in both Kamloops ridings will have a chance to influence the shape of the province during the next four years.

We hope it turns out well.

Green policy in day care

T

he B.C. Green Party has begun rolling out its election promises as the campaign formally begins this

week.

Andrew Weaver’s Greens are doing their best to look like a contender this time, rolling a biodiesel-fuelled bus to visit candidates in most of B.C.’s 87 constituencies. But judging by the early policy releases, their platform is not yet that of a government-in-waiting.

Weaver has seen the NDP’s giant bet to provide $10-a-day universal day care and raised it. Green Party day care will be “free” for kids up to age two with working parents. For parents who wish to stay home during those infant years, they will receive up to $500 a month from the province, on top of EI benefits.

That’s not all. The public school system will be expanded to provide early-childhood education for three- and fouryear-olds. This will also be “free,” although they ballpark the cost to the provincial treasury for this at around $4 billion a year.

Leader of a one-person caucus, Weaver has not yet entered the realm of realism. His education fantasy will get a cool reception from Metro Vancouver mayors, who are pleading for relief from school property taxes that are tied to assessed values, already twice as high as the rest of the province.

With the provincial economy having to shoulder steep increases in carbon taxes and

VICTORIA the oil and gas industry soon regulated out of business, a Green-governed B.C. would have to run its grand programs on taxes from those still here and working.

B.C. NDP Leader John Horgan said his heavily subsidized $10-a-day day-care program will pay for itself through economic growth. Expect more discussion of that in the weeks ahead, but at least it’s something that could happen, as we have seen in Quebec.

The B.C. Liberal record includes spending $11.3 million in the past year for the third phase of its expansion of childcare spaces. That phase amounts to 1,800 more spaces in 30 communities. The province now covers about 15 per cent of licensed day-care operating costs through subsidies and also assists qualified low-income parents.

Is that enough? Many would say no.

With the cost of land and operations rising, long waiting lists and rates as high as $1,400 a month, child care is still out of

reach for many in urban areas.

The province began extending kindergarten for five-yearolds from half-days to full days in 2010 and has developed a network called StrongStart Centres, providing after-school programs for parents and children at public schools.

Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux has also been reviewing regulations.

“We’re looking at the restrictions we put on child-care providers in terms of outdoor space, in terms of sun access,” Cadieux said last spring. “We want to make sure that child care is safe and we have quality, but we also want to make sure that we’re not creating a situation that is unreasonable.”

But Cadieux speaks as a realist who has had cabinet turn down budget increases for this and other pressing social needs.

They also confront the cost of real estate in places where day care is most needed.

If you believe there is enough money to massively increase child care across B.C. with no cost recovery, and to pay parents to stay home until their kids are two, you might even believe there is biodiesel available in every B.C. community to keep Weaver’s campaign bus running.

HELP US CLARK TAKES ‘CARE’ OUT OF HEALTH CARE If the B.C. Liberals cared, we would “see FIND A doctors in Kamloops.”

DOCTOR Editor: We don’t have a doctor and were directed months ago to phone 811 and register, which we did.

We were notified we were registered and near the top of the list. After the first clinic opened on the North Shore, we went over to see where we were on the list and to see if we were able to see a doctor.

We were told we would be contacted when our name came up. We asked when might that be and how far along the list was and were told, “You wouldn’t want to know.”

So, we are still waiting to be contacted and we read that we need to be referred by a doctor. Well, we do not have a doctor to refer us.

That is the reason we are on the wait list.

We are seniors without a doctor and in need of one. I am 89 and my wife, Clara, is 74. We find it difficult standing in line at a walk-in clinic.

We are wondering how we go about finding out where we are on the list. Can somebody help us?

Editor: If you are a Kamloops resident, be aware that Premier Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals have left 27,000 people in the city without medical care or assistance.

Remember that senior citizens are the people who helped build this province. We are the ones who worked to ensure those who followed us would have better lives.

But the history of the B.C. Liberal government shows it doesn’t care about people, especially seniors.

Yes, they opened two clinics on the North Shore — but the walk-in clinic closed. Yes, the clinics that have opened are staffed with excellent nurse practitioners and other talented medical staff.

But there are not enough to

even begin to address those in the city who really need care — seniors and people with disabilities.

The government is not trying to recruit doctors. It has drained the election money pit on other programs. If the B.C. Liberals cared, we would see doctors in Kamloops.

I am one of those seniors who needs a doctor. Try phoning 811 and you will hang up in disappointment. Phone the Ministry of Health and you will again hang up with disappointment.

I called and was told a practitioner would call me back in two weeks. I waited almost a month and did not receive a call. I called

back and was told they were busy.

During this election campaign, seniors and people with disabilities will have to make our voices heard across the province.

We need doctors and medical care. We have excellent doctors who are overworked and tired.

They can’t keep holding up a broken system. We all read in KTW about the death of retired doctor Rajindar Joneja in the waiting room of the ER in Royal Inland Hospital.

I don’t want to be the next casualty.

Six years after it was designated for affordable housing, a lot the city owns on Singh Street in Brocklehurst will see that kind of accommodation built — and it’s the first of the group of properties identified for housing to get to this stage.

Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services will receive $3.9 million of the $10 million the provincial government has announced for two projects in the city. It will build about 30 units at 975 Singh St. that will be used to provide housing for aboriginal youth and, in particular, those aging out of government care, along with elders.

The second project, one valued at $6.5 million, will see ASK Wellness Society buy the Maverick Motor Inn on the West Trans-Canada Highway across from Aberdeen Mall to create 42 units for people who are homeless, at risk of being homeless or struggling with mental-health challenges.

ASK executive director Bob Hughes is hoping the project will

be open for residents by July.

In making the announcement at his Victoria Street office, Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone said the two projects will fill “a critical part in the path to healing” by providing people with “a roof over your head.”

The Singh Street land was one of six sites the City of Kamloops designated in 2011 for social housing. The plan includes leasing the lands for $1 for 60 years.

The other sites include 1940/1950 and 1685 Pacific Way in Aberdeen, 697 Cowan St. and 1430 Ninth Ave./1050 McMurdo Dr. in South Kamloops and 1530/1540/1550 River St. near downtown.

The Cowan Street land was eventually removed from the list following complaints from nearby residents about preserving the park and green space there.

The Singh Street land was designated for First Nations housing.

Jen Casorso, the city’s social and community development supervisor, confirmed Singh Street is the first of the group to have construction planned.

No venting system in CO deaths The BC Safety Authority (BCSA) said the lack of a venting system caused carbon monoxide exposure, which is believed to have taken the lives of four people in Venables Valley, near Ashcroft, on March 24.

The BC Coroners Service is further investigating the cause of death and BCSA is working with the coroner.

Harvey Volaine and his wife, Melissa Penner, as well as their two children, 10-year-old Kaylex and seven-year-old Ay, died in the home.

In its investigation report, the BCSA states a “water heater was installed inside the home without a vent system attached.” The water heater was a tankless, on-demand type, in which cold water could be heated instantly by a high-output propane burner when a hot water tap was opened.

The report also notes the hazardous levels of carbon monoxide were due to “extended

operation of the water heater.”

“We are saddened by the tragedy in Ashcroft,” BCSA gas-safety manager Brad Wyatt said.

“When our safety officers investigated the site, we found that the water heater was not vented to the outdoors, which means toxic gases were released inside the home while the water heater burner was in use.”

Carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless gas produced by burning carbon fuels such as propane, natural gas, oil, wood, charcoal, alcohol, kerosene or gasoline. Exposure to CO interferes with the body’s ability to absorb oxygen, which can result in serious illness or death.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure can initially be flu-like, such as headaches, nausea, fatigue, confusion and dizziness. More severe CO poisoning symptoms can include chest pains, vomiting and convulsions

Trudeau: Assad on way out LEE BERTHIAUME

COURSEULLES-SUR-MER, France — Bashar Assad’s days as president of Syria are numbered, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested yesterday as more hostile talk from international powers continued to amplify the threat of a military escalation in the Middle East.

The way forward in Syria can’t include Assad, whose recent chemical attack against his own people were abetted by those countries — Russia and Iran — that have allowed him to remain in power, Trudeau told a news conference.

“There is no question that anyone who is guilty of the types of war crimes against innocents, against children, that Assad and his regime are, needs to be held to account,’’ he said during a visit to Juno Beach to commemorate Canada’s Second World War dead.

“We need to move as quickly as possible towards peace and stability in Syria that does not involve Bashar al-Assad.’’

Trudeau was, however, noncommittal when it came to the question of how to remove Assad from power and whether Russia should be punished for supporting him. Canada remains open to imposing new sanctions against Russia in concert with its allies, he said, but Russia must also be part of the solution for bringing peace to Syria.

“Countries that have been

supportive of the Assad regime bear some of the responsibility for the chemical attacks on innocents,’’ Trudeau said.

“And those countries must also be part of the solution as we hold the Assad regime to account and as we move tangibly forward as an international community to ending this conflict in Syria.’’

The U.S. fired 59 cruise missiles at a Syrian airfield last week in retaliation for the chemical attack, sparking tough talk and warnings from all sides.

Yesterday, the tension was only mounting.

The degree of hostility intensified on multiple fronts between the U.S. and its allies versus Assad and his backers Iran and Russia.

The U.S. said it has evidence Russia’s military helped cover up the use of chemical weapons.

And the U.S. appeared to threaten to strike Assad again, expanding — or so it seemed — its possible justifications for future strikes.

Three times during yesterday’s White House briefing, Trump spokesman Sean Spicer mentioned barrel bombs as another reason for launching attacks on Assad.

“I will tell you . . . if you gas a baby, if you put a barrel bomb into innocent people, I think you will see a response from this president,’’ Spicer said.

Later, however, the administration was playing down the idea of barrel bombs as a red line.

“Nothing has changed in our

posture,’’ the White House said in a statement.

That same day, the administration suggested Russia broke an international deal to gather Assad’s chemical weapons. In fact, an administration official was cited telling the Associated Press that Russia actually helped Syria cover up its use of the illegal weapon.

The AP reported the official said a Russian-operated drone flew over a hospital in Syria as victims of the attack were rushing to get treatment; then, hours later, a Russian-made fighter jet bombed the hospital in what American officials believe was a coverup effort.

Meanwhile, Assad’s allies reportedly threatened retaliation if the U.S. strikes again.

That threat reportedly came from a coalition of Assad military backers, including Russia and Iran. Various news reports said that coalition released a statement with a warning: “From now on, we will respond to anyone, including America, if it attacks Syria and crosses the red lines.’’

The statement reportedly said: “America knows very well our ability and capabilities to respond well to them.’’

The U.S. is hinting its true long-term purpose in striking the airfield was to send a political message — that long-term peace in Syria will require changes in government and the countries backing Assad should stop keeping him in place.

A job fair that promises “something for everyone” is set for next week, featuring 50 employers offering everything from summer jobs to careers.

While employers looking for seasonal employees — think students — are a focus of the fair, organizer Devon Mah said it has tried to expand the offerings.

“We have skilled trades, financial employers — a really wide variety,” Mah said.

The Kamloops spring hiring fair, put on by Open Door Group and Work B.C., has a Facebook page with a list of employers. Mah said it is a good strategy for prospective employees to look at the list and produce a resume for a particular job.

“The best thing to do is research employers coming and have a resume for that specific employer,” he said.

“It shows you spent the time to research them.”

A thousand people are expected to file through the doors at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel downtown for the spring hiring fair.

To prepare to meet with employers, Mah advised practising the “elevator pitch” — that

Mandatory heels banned by province JESSICA WALLACE

Local restaurant servers will no longer require a doctor’s note to get out of wearing high heels to work.

The provincial government announced Friday a ban on mandatory high heels in the workplace, something for which the restaurant industry is notorious.

KTW asked local restaurant staff about whether they were required to wear heels, in a policy Premier Christy Clark is now calling “wrong.”

One Earls staffer told KTW on the basis of anonymity that front-of-house staff are required to wear shoes at least 1.5-inches in height.

“Unless you have a doctor’s note,” she said.

Sore feet and legs

“Sometimes, I won’t lift my foot enough so I’ll sort of stumble,” she said.

“We have mats and my shoe will come off.

Sometimes the floors are slippery and I’ll slide a little bit.”

B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver introduced a private member’s bill in the

provincial legislature last month.

In a news release Friday, the government called the requirement a “health and safety issue,” due to risk of physical injury from slipping or falling and possible damage to the feet, legs and back from prolonged wearing of high heels while at work.

The Occupational Health and Safety Regulation under the

Workers Compensation Act was amended and WorkSafeBC will develop a workplace guideline for employers and employees to support the regulation, expected by the end of the month.

“In some workplaces in our province, women are required to wear high heels on the job,” Clark said in the press release.

“Like most British Columbians, our

government thinks this is wrong.”

According to sources, front-of-thehouse staff at Moxie’s Grill and Bar were also required to wear footwear of at least one inch in height. When KTW visited, no female front-of-house-staffer could be spotted without heels.

Restaurant manager Jason Fulton, however, told KTW the claim is untrue.

He said staff choose to wear heels.

“We’re closed-toe, half inch,” he said, noting the dress code comes from national head office.

He referred KTW to Sue Thomson from that office, who did not return a call for comment by press time.

Earls general manager Cindy Humphrey also referred KTW to head office, which did not respond to a call for comment.

BCSPCA thrift store to open downtown A new thrift store raising funds for the SPCA has found a home.

Second Chances will open in June at 634 Victoria St., next to the Noble Pig. Bonnie and Kevin McBride are behind the venture, which is expected to help provide some stable funding to the local SPCA branch, currently fundraising to build a new shelter at 281 Tranquille Rd., near the airport.

Privately owned and operated thrift stores raise more than $100,000 annually for SPCA shelters throughout the province. They operate under a licensing agreement allowing the stores to use the SPCA name in exchange for a percentage of store revenue. More than 10 operate in B.C., including two in Kelowna and others in the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island.

The store is expected to include dedicated classroom space for upcycling — refurbishing old and otherwise wasted materials.

The McBrides will be accepting donations in May to start accumulating inventory, including: housewares, china/flatware, indoor and outdoor furniture, rug, curtains, appliances, electronic equipment, clothing, games, books, toys, crafting items, decorative items, tools, records, DVDs and CDs, licence plates and lamps.

This week’s training was fantastic.

Sunday’s run with the 21-km training group was a tour of the North Shore under sunshine, but with a strong head wind. Still, running in the group, all we had to do was draft like cyclists do and that made it better.

We started and ended at McDonald’s, a Boogie sponsor, and were treated with free coffee. There was more fun to be had on Tuesday. Our 10k Bold group, led by Howie, the Captain of Hills, ran from Pioneer Park all the way to Kamloops School of the Arts, our highest point.

I did not even notice how much we were ascending because I was so intensely engaged in a conversation with a girlfriend.

I was so excited to see her and talk one-onone that time, distance and the hills flew by.

I have no idea how we managed to talk non-stop while running uphill, but we did.

However, I was very exhausted the next day and literally ate all day long. RunClub truly is a family and a family is a team that supports you to accomplish your goals. There is much respect for all runners, of all levels, and there is limitless support and laughter.

Families also run together at RunClub.

My family supports my running by looking after my kids. I am so thankful to everyone. So, create your family, and make it big — then you can walk/run through anything you face in life.

Three runs, three totally different experiences.

That’s the headline for my week in RunClub.

On Sunday, I was pretty sure I’d to be dragging my ass. Guess what? I was right, but I still managed to battle through.

On Tuesday night, I felt pretty good. I was definitely challenged, but I kept pace and felt like my running was progressing.

Cut to Thursday night. I thought maybe an extra run would give me a leg up on Sunday morning. Wrong. I was dead. I had nothing in my tank. My legs were burning after a minute of running and, by 75 seconds, I was spent. I ended up walking a good portion of the evening’s activity, running when I could.

The only explanation I can think of was my lunchtime workout at the Y. I thought I had been smart, riding the bike for cardio, then lifting arms and shoulders, to keep my legs fresh for my evening run.

It goes back to another classic Jo Berryism: The No. 1 cause of injury is too much, too soon.

While too soon doesn’t apply here, too much is an accurate description of my activity on Thursday.

Chalk it up to a lesson learned: if you’re going to work out in the morning, don’t expect to run like a gazelle in the evening.

Running has been one of the most challenging things I’ve done.

It’s constantly reminding myself to keep a positive mindset, pushing myself when I’m tired or not feeling it, listening to my body instead of ignoring it and reminding myself of all of the benefits.

I’m in awe of the friendly people in RunClub who come week after week and are in the best spirits. I’d like to push myself to be more like them. They set a good example to new runners and push everyone for the better.

Training is getting harder. As we get closer to Boogie the Bridge, the walk/run intervals are getting tougher for a novice runner.

I’m not averse to hard work and I knew this endeavour would progressively get tougher, but this week was just tough for me.

I felt I had to dig deeper than I have in previous weeks. Something as simple as breathing was tricky for me, I had to focus on taking calm, deep breaths on top of trying to relax my body. I ended up getting a cramp on each run and had to power walk one of the running intervals. My legs felt heavy and I couldn’t find a good stride.

It wasn’t my best running week, but I am OK with that. I forced myself to listen to my body and got to push myself harder then I have.

he Class of 2017 was enshrined in the Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday evening, the four-member group bringing the hall’s membership to 102 all-time.

The class was headlined by Hall of Fame founder Frank D’Amore, who was inducted as a community builder. Longtime coach and teacher Lindsey Karpluk was also inducted as a community builder and Radio NL’s Rick “The Bear” Wile became the first media member to enter the hall.

The 2012-2013 South Kamloops Titans girls’ basketball team rounded out the class, inducted in the team category.

The Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame remains in memory of Leroux, which D’Amore said made his induction somewhat bittersweet.

“I couldn’t get over the fact that if this Hall of Fame didn’t exist as it currently does, one of my best friends would still be alive,” he said.

Still, D’Amore said he was honoured by his induction and thanked the community of Kamloops for everything it has done to grow the Hall of Fame to what it is today.

“You make Kamloops a better place to live,” he said.

“I am incredibly proud to call this place my home.”

Karpluk became the 100th inductee with his selection, an honour he described as “weird, humbling and pretty cool.”

Karpluk played baseball, softball, hockey, basketball, rugby and football in his youth, but his strongest impact came in coaching. He has been a mainstay in the basketball community throughout his teaching career and inspired a number of his former players to take up the coaching reins.

Never the flashiest athlete nor the perennial title contender, Karpluk said his induction served as recognition for those involved in grassroots sports.

“I accept this award based on that and I hope I represent them well,” he said in his acceptance speech.

“I appreciate the statement the committee is making about grassroots coaches.

“I’ve never felt myself to be a hall of fame type, but I feel like I was raised in a hall of fame family.

“You have no idea how overwhelming this has been for me. I appreciate your kind thoughts over the last few weeks.”

Wile, meanwhile, reflected on a career behind the microphone highlighted by championship runs from the Kamloops Blazers, Kam High Red Devils and university and college clubs.

His coverage also included provincial, national and international sporting events, both in Kamloops and abroad.

Wile was also heavily involved in

the Tournament Capital’s slo-pitch community for many years.

“People can talk and talk and talk but, sometimes, it’s better to listen,” he said.

After learning he would be inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier this year, Wile said he received a number of congratulatory calls and messages. One call, from an individual who Wile had interviewed as part of an archery story years ago, stood out.

“It was just an archery story, but to him, it was the biggest story of his life,” Wile said.

“I’ve had the privilege of talking to a lot of stars in the sports field.

To me, that’s the gravy of a career.

The meat and potatoes is still on the home front.”

The Titans were recognized for their back-to-back championship runs, which saw South Kamloops win the B.C. High School AAA Championships in both 2012 and 2013, the first back-to-back championship runs since 1962.

The teams were coached by Ken Olynyk, Sean Lamoureux, Jane Wolfram and Cory Yamaoka and included Sienna Aberdeen, Hailey Hamer-Jackson, Abby Grinberg, Madison Ellis, Bethany Del Begio, Kierstan Landrie, Mieke DuMont, Emma Piggin, Anna Frankel, Daylynne Agar, Kanesha Reeves, Becca Peters, Emily Vilac, Christine Clyde, Elizabeth Anderson, Ashley Lamoureux, Maya Olynyk and Emma Wolfram.

“A good friend of mine, he always says, ‘Why not us? Why not Kamloops?’” Ken Olynyk said, before turning and pointing to his teams.

“These people were the ones.”

In his speech, Karpluk shared a few memories of playing against the Titans of 2012 and 2013.

“I remember when we thought we could play with you . . . I think we lost by 20,” he said with a laugh.

“The next time, it was 50.”

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Canucks have fired head coach Willie Desjardins after a miserable season.

The team announced the move yesterday, less than 24 hours after losing its eighth straight game in regulation.

The Canucks finished 29th in the NHL’s overall standings.

In three seasons with Vancouver, Desjardins compiled a 109-110-27 record.

The 60-year-old led the club to the playoffs as a rookie NHL head coach in 2014-15, but the rebuilding Canucks took a big step backwards last season and things got worse in 2016-17.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Sergio Garcia finally showed he has what it takes to win a major — and he has a green jacket to prove it.

Needing his best golf on just about every shot in the final hour at the Masters, Garcia overcame a two-shot deficit with six holes to play and beat Justin Rose in a sudden-death playoff Sunday for his first major after nearly two decades of heartache.

No one ever played more majors as a pro — 70 — before winning one for the first time.

Garcia got rid of the demons

and the doubts with two big moments on the par 5s — one a par, the other an eagle — in closing with a three-under 69.

It was never easy until the end, when Rose sent his drive into the trees on the 18th hole in the playoff, punched out and failed to save par from 15 feet.

That gave the 37-year-old Spaniard two putts from 12 feet for the victory, and his putt swirled into the cup for a birdie.

He crouched in disbelief, and shouted above the loudest roar of the day.

Rose, who also closed with a 69, lovingly patted Garcia’s cheek before they embraced.

Rose then tapped Garcia on the

heart, which turned out to be a lot bigger than anyone realized.

“Ser-gee-oh! Ser-gee-oh!’’ the delirious gallery chanted to Garcia, who couldn’t contain his emotion.

Garcia turned with his arms to his side, blew a kiss to the crowd and then crouched again and slammed his fist into the turf of the green.

He didn’t get down after missing a six-foot putt on the 16th hole, or missing a five-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole in regulation.

“If there’s anyone to lose to, it’s Sergio. He deserves it,’’ Rose said. “He’s had his fair share of heartbreak.’’

Canada, U.S., Mexico bid on World Cup NEW YORK — Canada, the United States and Mexico have launched their bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup. The joint bid was announced yesterday atop the Freedom Tower in lower Manhattan by the heads of the American, Mexican

and Canadian federations.

They are seeking to host the first World Cup with an expanded 48-nation field. That’s double the size of the last World Cup in North America in 1994 when the U.S. was the only host.

No rival bid has emerged for

the 2026 tournament, which is due to be awarded by FIFA in 2020.

FIFA rules currently prohibit bidders from Europe and Asia because Russia is staging the World Cup in 2018 and Qatar has the showpiece in 2022.

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers return to the NHL playoffs tomorrow against the battled-hardened Western Conference-champion San Jose Sharks in a series expected to turn on experience — and injuries.

Centres Joe Thornton and Logan Couture are day-to-day with injuries for the Sharks, who ended the last three weeks of the regular season in freefall.

“They’re missing a couple of key guys and they make a world of difference,’’ said centre Connor McDavid after Edmonton wrapped up its regular season second in the Pacific Division.

Couture has been skating but is still in pain after being drilled in the face by a redirected Brent Burns slapshot March 25.

Thornton injured his left knee in a collision a week ago against the Vancouver Canucks.

McDavid hit the 100-point mark and Jordan Eberle recorded a hat trick as the Oilers downed the Vancouver Canucks 5-2 on Sunday in the final regular-season game on the NHL schedule.

McDavid, who had a pair of assists, ended the season with

30 goals and 70 assists and is the only player this season to reach 100 points. Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby and Chicago’s Patrick Kane finished tied for second in points with 89 apiece.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet,’’ McDavid said of winning the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s leading scorer.

“It was a stressful time down the stretch with [teammate Leon Draisaitl] battling to be in the top 10 [in scoring] and my battling for the Art Ross.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Kim Robert Kisyel

On Sunday, April 2, 2017, Kim Robert Kisyel passed away suddenly at the age of 63 years.

Kim was born on November 14, 1953 in Vancouver, Washington.

Albert Roy Hamilton passed away on April 4, 2017 after a brief illness in St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon at the age of 75.

He was born on July 30, 1941 to Frank and Lena Hamilton in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan.

As a young man, Kim served with the Navy where he received mechanics training. While living in Kamloops he operated his own successful business, “Low Cost Truck & Trailer”.

In 1990, employment with Precision Mechanical brought him to the Elk Valley where Kim worked until 2008. At the time of his death, Kim was a heavy-duty mechanic for SMS. A Harley enthusiast, Kim anticipated the warm weather months – the signal that meant it was time to bring out his bike so he could begin enjoying long rides, cruising the highways. Kim loved the simple things in life …. Listening to CBC radio (tuned in every day, all day!), his favorite companions; his cats Tequito, Optimus and Chopper and a nice cold Kokanee beer at the end of his day.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Kamloops this summer.

Kim is survived by his children Kazden Michael Kisyel and Kianna Theresa Kisyel, their mother and his former wife, Kim Elise Kisyel, and his sister Julie (Vern) Pirang as well as his beloved cats Tequito, Optimus and Chopper. He was predeceased by his parents Lorna and Mike Kisyel.

Roy was predeceased by his parents, wife Sharon, son Terry and brothers Donald and Gordon. He is survived by his son Tyler (Rose), his daughters Charlene (Mike) and Wanda, brothers Robert and Victor, sisters Irene, Iris, Gladys, Clara, Fern, Dorothy and Patricia, as well as numerous grandchildren.

Roy grew up in the Weekes, Saskatchewan area and fondly recalled the days helping his father with the horses and other animals on the farm.

Around the age of 16, he went to work for the Wheat Pool building the elevators that have become symbolic on the Saskatchewan landscape.

“You had to pound a keg of nails a day if you were going to make it… you had to be tough.” Not one to stay still, he then headed for the oilfields of Drayton Valley, Alberta and chased those rigs right back to Saskatchewan where he had a hand in sinking the original shafts for the potash mines in the Lanigan area. His calling however was carpentry and that was his true passion. He worked in the Saskatoon area for years as a general contractor and later in Kamloops where he would retire. He returned to Saskatchewan in his later years and he, along with his beloved dog Happy, became a common site in the towns of Young and Biggar. He spent his summers gardening and his winters building with Happy always at his side.

A Come and Go Memorial Reception for Roy will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Edwards Family Centre (333 - 4th Avenue North) in Saskatoon, SK. Complementary parking available at Saskatoon Funeral Home.

Frank is survived by his wife of 40 years Dianne Zimmerman of Kamloops, his four children Jerry Zimmerman of Utah, USA, Barry Zimmerman (Cindy) of Chilliwack, BC, Patty Zimmerman of Abbotsford, BC and Kerri Zimmerman (Rob) of Calgary, AB, his five step-children Judy Paquin (Noel) of Kamloops, BC, Terry Olsen (Rob) of Jasper, AB, Linda Strate of Kamloops, BC, Bill Witwicky (Faii) of Thailand and David Witwicky (Cheri) of Kamloops, BC. Frank also leaves behind twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Frank was predeceased by his first wife Joyce Zimmerman, brother John Zimmerman and sister Terry Oliver.

Frank was born on February 4, 1931 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to John and Theresa Zimmerman of Hungary. At 18, Frank joined the Canadian Armed Forces and served as a Gunner until 1953. As a young man, he worked at various jobs before finding a career as a locomotive engineer on the CN Rail. After 38 years on the rail road, Frank retired early to enjoy life.

Frank loved to drive and he and Dianne travelled all over BC, many parts of the Prairies and down South, over the years.

It wasn’t long before Frank realized that he missed working and went on to flag

Her diminished size is in me, not her.

And just at the moment when someone at my side says she is gone, there are other eyes watching for her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout “There she comes!”.

Frank was a member of the Gizeh Shriners of Kamloops, Royal Arch Masons of BC and spent many summers parading with the Keystone Kops Association of Kamloops. Frank was a devoted volunteer with the Freemason Cancer Car Program.

He was a man of few words and fondly remembered for his “bark that was worse than his bite” but those who knew him well knew that he had a heart of gold and would do anything for his family.

Frank loved Cadillacs and good shoes!

Bob Olsen Bob Olsen “Water Truck Bob” passed in Kamloops on April 2, 2017 at the age of 65. Bob is survived by his loving wife Terry, son and daughter Brant and Kendra, mom Barbara, siblings Shirley (Boyd) Gallant, Doug (Marian) Olsen, Dorothy (Stan) Barron, in-laws Jim and Laverne Aitchison, Cindy (Chris) Jackson, James Aitchison (Stacey), Linda (Greg) Weeres, David Aitchison (Linh), Michael (Christy) Aitchison and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his dad Stan and nephew Brennan.

Robert Stanley Olsen was born in Swalwell, AB on September 12, 1951. Bob was a dedicated and hardworking employee of Gulf Oil, Interior Irrigation, the KXA and primarily Gallant Trucking. Work was always followed by a cold beer or two or four. Anyone who knew Bob appreciated his sense of humour, his endless sage advice and his one liners including his most recent favorite that he asked his son “Where’s the bacon?”.

Bob lovingly imposed his profound knowledge on his daughter who thought she knew just as much as he did.

His wife labelled him the “BOE” (boss of everything).

Many of Bob’s best memories were of time spent with family and friends at Harper Ranch and the Devick homestead.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Kamloops Curling Club on Sunday, April 23, 2017 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Asmus Brodersen

Sheila Collier (Pherrill)

It’s with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Asmus (Amos) Brodersen on April 5th, 2017. He was surrounded by loving family in Kelowna, BC. Asmus was born in Felsted, Denmark to parents Katrine Soll and Jens Peter Brodersen. At the age of 27 years old, Asmus traveled to Canada with only a few dollars to his name. Asmus moved to Vancouver, BC building houses before settling in the Interior of BC. Asmus ran the McLure ferry service for 22 years and was a master carpenter, who could be found in his workshop building everything from beautiful handcrafted grandfather clocks to his famous rat traps.

Asmus was also an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing at Allan Lake, hunting, gardening and camping. Two of his favorite memories were trips he took from California to Virginia with his close relatives Pearl and Tony Golia and an amazing road trip from Kamloops to Alaska.

Asmus was predeceased by his parents Jens and Katrine and his brothers Hans and Karl. He is survived by his loving partner Christina Walsh, his step-children Vivian, Raymond (Marlene), Louise, Keith and Elaine (Robert). He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and their spouses, twenty-one great-grandchildren and seven great-great–grandchildren. Asmus and his sense of humour will be missed dearly by all his family and friends.

There is no formal service at this time.

1938 - 2017

Born August 2, 1938, in a log cabin, Sheila grew up on a farm near Athabasca, Alberta. As a young woman, she was ahead of her time, recognizing the value of a career and the independence that it gave her. Always excelling, her first employer—a customs brokerage in Edmonton— was sad to lose her to the nursing program at the University of Alberta in 1957. She qualified as a Registered Nurse. Later, she married, raising three children with Geof Collier in Kitimat and Kamloops.

While being a mother, Sheila continued to expand her interests into the community as a real estate agent, as a member of many boards and associations, and as a political campaigner. She returned to nursing in the 1980s, meeting many new lifelong friends. In 1985, she married Peter Baron, and shared 32 wonderful years with him.

She loved cats, skiing, summers at the Shuswap, and a night out at the theatre wherever she was—at home or around the world. She lived a rich and full life, meeting its every challenge with strength, grace, and generosity.

Sheila died on April 5th in Kamloops, BC at the [Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice/// Kamloops Hospice] of Pancreatic Cancer.

Sheila will be remembered by her immediate and extended family, her friends, and her community as a deeply compassionate and loving presence.

Robert Dennis Hand

June 20, 1935 – April 8, 2017 As the morning sun began to greet the day painting golden hues on the clouds, our dad journeyed to heaven with the rising of the sun. He left this world to dwell in the house of the Lord.

Robert will be cherished in memory as a loving husband to his wife Shirley and a dedicated father to his daughters Linda, Kathy and Wendy. He was pre-deceased by his son Terry, parents Samuel and Lillian, sisters Ruth and Drene, and son-in-law Mike.

He will be missed lovingly by his wife and daughters, sisters and brothers, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and friends.

Robert was born in (Port Arthur) Thunder Bay, Ontario. Hockey was a part of his life and as a youngster at the age of 15, he was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, but due to the economic times and his age, the dream of the NHL was never fulfilled. As a young man, he worked at the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool where he met the love of his life Shirley Maunula. Together they shared 63 years of marriage and brought up four children. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren for their accomplishments and achievements in their lives.

His great-grandchildren were the delight of his life and he cherished each moment spent with them.

Robert was an avid curler with the Lutheran Men’s Curling League in Thunder Bay and enjoyed bowling in a mixed league with his wife Shirley. Those sports were continued in the Village of Chase and enjoyed with new friends. Weekends in Thunder Bay were spent with friends and family sledding across the countryside on the shores of Lake Superior, playing Rumoli for pennies, attending and organizing neighborhood Fall Corn Roasts and watching his children play hockey at the McKenzie Rec Center.

Robert was a hunter and provided either moose or deer meat every Fall for his family.

While living in Thunder Bay, he worked in the forestry industry where he owned and operated his own logging machinery. On a holiday trip to the west while visiting family in Kamloops, he fell in love with the mountains that became his home soon after. He moved his family to Kamloops in 1972.

Employment was with Balco Forest Products, but he soon moved over to the Weyerhaeuser Sawmill, where he labored as a dedicated employee until his retirement.

He was a unionized Millwright with the IWA and earned his tickets by re-educating himself as an employee. After his retirement, working was always in his blood and he re-entered the workforce and gained employment with Arrow Re-Load for a few more years.

Living in BC, Robert took full advantage of the great outdoors. From Spring to Fall he could be found fishing and camping everywhere in the Interior of BC. Teaching his grandchildren to fish was never missed at any time during the summer months.

Grandchildren were always brought along on weekend trips to the lake. He was introduced to watching the sport of rodeo through his son-in-law Mike Puhallo and attended the Kamloops Cowboy Poetry Festival annually.

Robert was an avid NASCAR fan and never missed a race. He shared this passion for the race with his sister Faye. Telephone calls on race day were a means of discussing the drivers, their cars and who might be the winner. His love for cars extended to antique vintage vehicles where he became a member of the Kamloops Antique Car Club.

Owning a restored 1930 Model A Ford, a gift from his brother-in-law Neil Maunula.

For ten years both Robert and Shirley spent time enjoying the Merritt Mountain Music Festival. Tickets were purchased in advance as soon as they were available as he did not want to miss his favorite entertainers when they came to town.

Robert will be missed dearly by Family, Friends and Loved Ones.

A Celebration of his Life will be held on Monday, April 17, 2017 at 11:00 am in his home church, Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2481 Sunset Drive, Kamloops, BC.

Footprints One night a man had a dream.

He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two set of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints.

He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. “Lord, you said that once I decided to followed you, you’d walk with me all the way.

But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times of life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why, when I needed you most, you would leave me.”

The Lord replied, “My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”
