The Reach begins rising this summer The first shovel is expected to break ground by late August to kickstart creating The Reach university village on the campus of Thompson Rivers University. The TRU Community Trust has chosen Cape Construction’s proposal to build a four-storey, 60,000-square-foot market condominium development. It’s anticipated the project will generate $20 million of economic activity in the city. Trust CEO Finlay Sinclair said the company needs to submit its planned designs to it to ensure they meet specifications set
for The Reach and, once approved, it will start the process for city approval to begin construction. Vancouver-based Cape was created in 1958 by Ralph Schwartzman in Brandon, Man., and is now run by his daughter Reisa and her son. The company’s past projects include the Richmond Health Science Centre adjacent to Richmond General Hospital, the Crystal Court condominium-townhouse project in the Granville area and Pacifica Nanaimo, a luxury condominium structure on
Nanaimo’s waterfront. The Reach is a 25-year, billion-dollar project to create a sustainable, pedestrianfriendly community of 3,500 multi-family housing units, retail and office spaces, as well as other services, on the TRU campus. The first project will be at the north side of Old Main Building on what is now parking lots. The project is designed to be parking-neutral. For each existing parking space that will disappear, underground parking will be built to ensure the number of parking stalls does not decrease.
