A Facebook photo of a Kamloops city councillor giving KGHM Ajax’s mining application for environmental review the finger has touched off another round of debate over the conduct of local elected officials.

Coun. Donovan Cavers said he agrees the photo he posted to his personal Facebook account went too far, but said he doesn’t agree his behaviour is an issue for council.

Cavers told KTW he did not realize the photo, which was posted to his personal Facebook page, would be visible to the public, since most of his posts are locked to mutual friends only.

He described the photo as a spur-of-the-moment decision, made while sitting next to the company’s application at city hall.

“I just kind of felt like, goddammit, why is this even happening?

If KGHM had never come to town, if city council and the community had been able to direct our energies into more productive things, where would we be today, six years later?” he said.

“I just felt all the propaganda they’ve put out about zero harm and all that nonsense is essentially flipping the bird to the community. So I thought, well, it might be cathartic for some of my friends.”

While he deleted the photo Wednesday morning, screen shots continue to float around the internet.

In a paid sponsored post, Facebook group Support Ajax argues the photo “clearly shows he lacks the maturity and character for his current position.”

Kamloops resident Dennis Giesbrecht has also submitted a formal call for censure to the city over the photo.

“You can’t post a picture giving the finger to documents in city hall,” he said. “That is above and beyond what a councillor is expected to do.”

the photo was a finger too far. He sees the photo — as well as a recent statement Cavers was required to make after criticizing a rezoning application in a way that could have barred him from attending future public hearings — as a sign Cavers is too close-minded on issues, which he believes could expose the city to legal troubles.

Mayor PeterMilobar said he is not pleased with the photo, butcsaid censure isn’t an option because Cavers hasn’t exposed the city to legal risk, since the city isn’t a statutory decision-maker on Ajax and the project isn’t within city limits.

lacking in any decorum,” Milobar said. “But that’s a long way away from putting the city in legal peril or the other kind of behaviour that we would censure an elected official for.”

Milobar said it is frustrating to be discussing Cavers’ social-media behaviour — which was the subject of a similar conversation a few years ago, when he used Twitter to label three people “sellouts” for working for KGHM. “One would think at a certain point you learn how to conduct yourself appropriately,” Milobar said. “And people are allowed to have opinions. But when you’re an elected official, it’s how you choose

But Cavers, who is running for the B.C. Greens in Kamloops-South Thompson, said he is questioning whether it’s “appropriate” to continue on at city hall as the campaign heats up.

“The way the provincial election is starting to be covered, I think that Peter and I are — compromised isn’t the right word, but there’s a transition happening where we’re being perceived more as candidates and less as a mayor and city councillor,” Cavers said.

Milobar, who is the B.C. Liberal candidate in Kamloops North Thompson, said he doesn’t see what’s changed since the two decided on a date to begin their leave and doesn’t believe they are being viewed more as provincial candidates.

“All the online commentary on this particular episode seems to talk about him being a city councillor, not a candidate,” Milobar said. “If he’s feeling it’s too stressful to juggle being a councillor and a candidate, everyone has their own stress levels, I guess.”

City told to rehire worker who falsified log book CAM FORTEMS

The B.C. Labour Relations Board (LRB) has ruled the City of Kamloops must rehire a guard who made false entries in a log book, then tried to change his story when presented with video evidence.

But, while the city must rehire Rob Vecchio, arbitrator Christopher Sullivan said he cannot return to his former employment in the cells at the RCMP detachment and should instead be placed in the general on-call labour pool.

The city was not required to give Vecchio back pay for the little more than a year he was off while the complaint waited to be heard.

Vecchio was fired in May 2015 after the city determined he did not make required in-person visual checks of each prisoner housed in city cells, yet made false entries

in a logbook. An investigation was started following a complaint from another jail guard.

In-person, visual checks are required every 15 minutes, according to RCMP policy.

RCMP made the video available to city human resources staff and Vecchio’s claims of physical checks and related log book entries were compared to video evidence.

The union representing Vecchio, the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 900, argued video evidence should be excluded because guards were told it was not used for job performance review.

But Sullivan ruled it could be used in the hearing because the use was directed by the RCMP, rather than city staff.

“The video evidence was not surreptitious surveillance footage, but was video the custodial guards were fully aware of,” Sullivan

said in his ruling.

While Sullivan found the city was within its rights to discipline Vecchio, he also found it went too far by firing him because it handed out lesser discipline in two other instances — including transferring a guard who was part of the infamous jailhouse sex episode of 2010.

David Tompkins pleaded guilty in 2013 to breach of trust for his part in watching, by video. two female prisoners housed in cells engaged in sex. He was joined by others, including an RCMP member in charge.

Despite the criminal conviction, the city reassigned Tompkins to the general on-call labour pool.

“But for the situations involving Mr. Tompkins and Mr. Ramsey [a related incident at the jail], I would uphold the griever’s discharge in the present case,” the arbitrator wrote.

Yellow Cabs must pay $18K DALE BASS

Yellow Cabs in Kamloops has been ordered to pay 34 employees owed wages totalling $18,000.

The ruling from the provincial Employment Standards Tribunal upholds an earlier decision by the province’s director of employment standards.

The director, acting on an anonymous complaint, audited the employment records of 40 employees at the cab

company between Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2015.

The director found the cab company had violated a section of the Employment Standards regulations relating to the taxi industry that spells out how drivers who lease vehicles from taxi companies must be paid.

On behalf of Yellow Cabs, Abdul Rasheed appealed the decision, claiming among other points that drivers did not always record their start and end times of when they took breaks or were not available during their shifts.

However, the company was unable to provide printed copies of dispatch logs for the audit period, the ruling states, because it was upgrading to a new dispatch system.

The director doing the audit was not given access to the program nor the information it contained during his review.

The cab company disputed findings for 16 of the drivers, saying they did not record their breaks or periods of unavailability.

In ruling on the appeal, tribunal member David Stevenson said

appeals are not “another opportunity to argue the merits of the case to another decision-maker,” but are to address any errors of law made.

Stevenson said the appeal included “evidence” he determined had been created for the purpose of the appeal.

He would not accept or consider any new evidence for that reason and because it wasn’t presented during the original audit.

In addition to paying back wages, the company was handed a $1,000 administrative penalty.

An investigation is underway after an incident at the Kamloops Law Courts landed four deputy sheriffs and a prisoner in hospital.

Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush said Mounties were called at just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

“Police were advised that during an altercation with a prisoner over a baggie of what was believed to be drugs, the bag was ripped open,” Bush said.

“There was concern of contamination and the possibility that the contents could contain fentanyl.”

BCGEU spokesman Dean Purdy told KTW the incident took place as an inmate was being searched in the courthouse’s cellblock.

“Four deputy sheriffs were involved in an altercation where an inmate refused to be searched,”

Purdy said. “A scuffle ensued and, during the scuffle, the drugs went airborne.”

Purdy described the drugs as “an unknown powdery substance” that could potentially contain fentanyl or carfentanil.

One of the sheriffs involved in the altercation was also exposed to bodily fluids of the prisoner,” Purdy said.

“It was, I believe, saliva and blood,” Purdy said.

“He was exposed to that in his eyes and mouth. All four sheriffs were taken to hospital and treated by doctors and then subsequently released.”

Kamloops Fire rescue’s hazmat team and paramedics were also called.

The sheriff exposed to the prisoner’s bodily fluids will undergo further treatment as a precaution, Purdy said, noting investigations are likely to come from police, WorkSafe BC and a joint accident investigation under occupational health and safety regulations.

The union representing sheriffs blames the B.C. Liberal government for shortages, resulting in members being flown from Kamloops to Victoria to fill in at the Island courthouse.

“As a result of the ongoing sheriff shortage, Kamloops sheriff services has begun flying deputy sheriffs to the Victoria courthouse on Sundays for overtime, taking care of their meals and accommodation,” the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union said in a release.

The arrangement is expected to last for at least six months, the union said.

The provincial government provided a statement from Attorney General Susan Anton, who noted the most recent budget provides about $2.7 million to train more sheriffs.

Anton’s ministry said it is

not unusual to move sheriffs between areas. It declined to provide its costs in moving the Kamloops sheriffs to the Island for temporary duties.

“Two dozen sheriffs are coming online this June,” Anton said in a statement.

“Previously, I said that 24 more recruits will begin training this summer, but I am pleased to announce that ministry officials and I found resources to increase that to 32 more sheriffs who will graduate this fall.”

The measures come as courtrooms have been closed and at least one case thrown out by a judge when a sheriff could not be found to staff the Victoria courtroom.

“I think, basically, there’s a shortage in almost every area of the province,” said BCGEU representative Dean Purdy. “I don’t know the reason they’re coming [specifically] from Kamloops and Vancouver.”

10 times in Victoria’s courthouse when proceeding have been delayed or courtrooms closed.

Sheriffs are responsible for courthouse security and transferring prisoners.

The union points to what it says is a growing gap between the pay of sheriffs, who top out at about $60,000 a year plus pension and benefits, and police.

Purdy said a recent contract gives B.C. Transit peace officers a salary of $90,000 a year at the top of the grid.

Even with the graduating class in June, Purdy said speculation is many of those recruits will immediately seek lawenforcement opportunities with improved pay.

POWER FAILURE REMAINS A MYSTERY

Kamloops’ director of public works said it’s not clear what led to a power failure at the city’s water treatment plant last week.

Originally attributed to a blow transformer that downed the system for about half a day on March 8, Fretz said workers have since traced the plant issue to a cable that connects

the transformer to the plant.

While the city has backup generators, they also relied on the same cable, Fretz said.

It’s also not clear why the power failure took out the plant’s programming.

Fretz said the city is still working to replace the cable.

The city councillor this week posted on his personal Facebook page a photo of himself giving the middle finger to KGHM Ajax (or, more precisely, to binders on a shelf containing the mining company’s Ajax application).

Cavers tweeted out an apology yesterday, but not before the image led to an uproar of sorts, with calls to this newspaper and at least one man dropping by the newsroom on his way to city to hall to lodge an official complaint.

In July 2013, Cavers stirred the online pot by posting a tweet in which he labelled as “sellouts” former Kamloops Daily News editor Robert Koopmans, former RCMP superintendent Yves Lacasse and former city councillor John O’Fee for accepting employment with KGHM Ajax.

A 36-year-old man died after being struck late Monday night by a vehicle at the busy Westsyde Road/Eighth Street/Ord Road/Batchelor Drive intersection.

Police say speed may have been a factor, noting the 20-year-old driving the vehicle stayed at the scene. Little else is know about the crash, but it should serve all as a reminder to slow down if driving and to pay extra attention as you walk in the city.

A modest proposal . . .

W

hile the debate rages over a oneweek or two-week spring break for students and teachers, a modest proposal on bringing efficiency to our education system on a day-today basis: • Dispense with the archaic calendar that sees two-plus months of empty classrooms in the summer.

It has been more than a few generations since we needed the kids to help bring in the harvest after an arduous spring of planting the crops. There is no reason to shut down schools for part of June and all of July and August, a practice that dulls the minds and students and results in September being used mainly to remind kids what they forgot while playing video games for the past nine weeks.

It is past time classrooms joined the rest of us in a year-round schedule to maximize learning.

Let’s keep the Christmas and spring breaks, for a two-week respite now and then is beneficial; • While we are at it, toss the semester system into the waste bin of bad ideas and revert to a yearround schedule of subjects that rotate constantly, day by day.

Kids today can go a full year between subjects in high school, which is ridiculous. For some students, Math 9 can finish at the end of January and Math 10 may not begin again until February of the next year. How many 14- or 15-year-olds will retain a smidgen of what they learned in math for 12 months? My kids can barely remember to load the dishwasher three minutes after dinner.

The semester system also contributes to the detrimental health of our next generation.

MUSINGS The provincial government has long pushed its “active kids” mantra, creating myriad campaigns to get kids moving while warning against the danger of sedentary.

Meanwhile, we have high school kids without gym class for as long as one full year under the semester system. To make matters all the more confusing, gym class, which should be mandatory from kindergarten to Grade 12, is optional in grades 11 and 12. Nothing says ParticipACTION like teens choosing a mocha at Starbucks over a 5K run in gym class; • Rearrange professional-development days so they fall during breaks in the school year.

Schedule Pro-D days for the end of August, just before school starts, and at the end of Christmas and spring breaks. This would eliminate the current practise of pencilling in Pro-D days on Fridays of a week that includes a statutory holiday.

There is no reason a kid’s week should include more non-school days than days spent in class.

• Modernize the hours of the school day.

Why do classes have to end in the mid-afternoon? Why can’t we stagger classes into the evening, as

is done at university?

It is well known a teen’s brain is a useless mess before noon, so let’s create school days that begin in the morning for primary kids, in the mid-morning for intermediate students and in the afternoon for high school attendees.

We could better utilize otherwise empty buildings, better educate our kids and perhaps even address overcrowding issues.

Reporters here routinely flex off time to cover news that occurs at night and on weekends. Kamloops is full of shift workers. There is no reason the education system cannot do the same; • Give students with learning and behavioural issues the attention they need — and if that means ending the inclusivity-at-allcosts mentality, so be it.

Even if the B.C. Teachers’ Federation itself formed government, there will never be enough money to properly deal with what needs to be done in every classroom. So, why not have teacher(s) and assistants assigned to classrooms dedicated to helping those students whose learning or behavourial issues are significant enough that they cannot get the attention required in a mainstream class?; • Pay teachers more money.

This suggestion is aimed at those parents who balk at a twoweek spring break because daycare costs would rise.

School is not a day care, but if it is, then let’s pay teachers day-care rates.

A class of 25 students, at $700 per student per month, means teachers are woefully underpaid now, according to parents out there who consider teachers to be babysitters. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

ASKING FORGIVENESS ONLY RIGHT CHOICE Editor: Every day we act upon a multitude of choices which, for the most part, serious or whimsical, puts into effect changes to our lives and the lives of others. Unfortunately, sometimes there is no choice given and we are powerless to the effects of forcible events.

Jennifer Gatey, beautiful and fun-loving with a promising and bright future, was victim to just that. A young lady rendered powerless when struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver.

Needless to say, her choice would have been life, to continue her journey with those

she loved and all who loved her.

This unimaginable tragedy has clearly touched the hearts of our community and devastated a family. Now, with an arrest made and charges laid, hopefully the closure needed to heal has come.

Disgracefully, the hit-and-run driver abused their right to choice by making the conscious decision to not come forward and take responsibility for the death of this girl.

Staying at the scene, attempting immediate assistance and calling 911 was the only right choice. Remorsefully taking blame and asking

POTHOLES GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY Editor: As I was driving along Battle Street (substitute the name of virtually any other Kamloops thoroughfare here) the other day, trying desperately to dodge the yawning, water-filled craters seemingly forever in my path, all the while risking straying into neighbouring traffic lanes, I couldn’t help but muse about the billions of

dollars our federal government plans for infrastructure spending.

It occurred to me repairing our road surfaces would be a great use for these funds, all the while saving many dollars for our city budget. A win-win, I thought, as the thumpthump of a bent tire rim echoed in my ears.

On further reflection, I realized the error of my reasoning.

What economic benefit would accrue from smooth road surfaces?

None, of course.

Rather, a perfect and much desired economic boost would be best achieved by leaving the damaged asphalt as it is, with the dollars spent fixing damaged rims, shocks and flat tires giving a muchneeded shot in the arm to Canada’s GDP.

So, City of Kamloops, hear my plea: for the good of our local auto shops and the country’s economy as a whole, avoid the temptation to fix those potholes and cracks, however tempting such work might be.

They are there, after all, for our own good, eh?

CAN DECISION BE APPEALED? Editor: Regarding rezoning of 5756 Dallas Dr., I feel a contractor should not be allowed to come in and chop up the nice big lots in Dallas when they don’t even reside in the area.

A petition against this proposal revealed 75 per cent of residents opposed the plan, yet city council approved it. Is there any way to appeal the decision in court? No council members reside in Dallas, either.

If we let this go, contractors will be coming in to chop up other lots and negatively affect the community.

BASS HAS MISCONCEPTION BASED ON CANADIAN MEDIA Editor: Re: Dale Bass’s column of March 9 (‘And another thing’): In regards to the part about Franklin Graham, I can understand why Bass has a misconception about the man when one listens to and reads what the Canadian media puts out. Graham, through Samaritan’s Purse, gives food and health care to thousands of children in impoverished

nations. He also has clinics in the Middle East to train Muslims as doctors so they can help their people. We don’t hear that from our media.

That is part of what the 20,000 people were celebrating in Vancouver. I bet Bass does not leave her door unlocked at night or when she leaves home. Why? Because it is the duty of a country to know which people are coming in, which is what Graham is espousing. Also, as a

practising Christian, Franklin and others like him believe what scripture says about the gay lifestyle. We believe it is wrong. We have that right to believe, but we should not hate those involved in that lifestyle. In countries where Islam is the dominant religion, such as Iran, homosexuality is punishable by death. Isn’t that something to be upset about?

CRIMES OF THE WEEK GOLF COURSE BROKEN INTO Early in the morning of Tuesday, March 14th at approximately 3:05 am, an alarm was set off at the Mount Paul Golf course. Both the RCMP and a private security company attend to the golf course, the suspect had fled prior to their arrivals. The front glass window on the door had been smashed out and entry was gained into the store. A video surveillance captured a male wearing a dark ski mask and dark clothing then was seen loading items into a bag. This was another good example of crime prevention techniques being used to prevent more items from being stolen.

Although it was early in the morning the golf course is on a main street in a light industrial area and there is traffic most of the day and night.

VANDALISM AT A BANK The RCMP would like to know who this person is? In the late afternoon of Monday, February 13th, a lone male had gone into a bank on the North Shore then caused some damage to two of the ATMs. It is unknown why this male decided to cause this damage.

At this point the bank can not identify the male by any information that he tried to entered on the PIN pad. A bank security

camera has a good picture of this suspect standing at the ATM. This male is described as Caucasian, late 40’s, short hair and was wearing a grey hoodie and had on a dark toque with some type of design on the front of it.

BREAK AND ENTER IN LOGAN LAKE Two break and enters took place late at night in Logan Lake, the first took place on Thursday, February 2nd and the second on Tuesday, February 21st. These suspects broke into the Petro Canada gas station each time. In both incidents, a small amount of cash and cigarettes were taken, good crime prevention techniques prevented any further items from being taken. In the first break and enter a black Dodge pickup truck extended cab was seen at the fuel pumps, it has now been recovered and it had been stolen. The

second truck, again seen at the fuel pump appears to be a Ford Crew Cab white in colour with side rails. One of the suspect’s in the photo appears with the Black truck.

The male is Caucasian, late 20’s, short beard, wearing a grey hoodie. The second suspect will be on our web page as the quality of the photo is very poor.

Charges against a man and woman arrested in connection to a large-scale fentanyl bust last year are expected to be laid within weeks.

The pair, both 28 years old, were arrested on Nov. 30 as police executed a search warrant inside an apartment unit at Library Square in North Kamloops.

In Kamloops provincial court yesterday, RCMP Const. Pete Froyland said charges are expected to be laid by early April.

Froyland was asking a judge for more time to hold on to evidence seized during the execution of the warrant.

According to Froyland, more time is needed because of the large volume of evidence and the fact a lot of it contains amounts of fentanyl.

“We have forensic evidence with the DNA laboratory and there is also firearms evidence,” Froyland said.

“A lot of the material is contaminated by fentanyl.”

At the time of the bust, police said they seized “trafficking quantities” of heroin, crack cocaine and meth, as well as

$40,000 in cash, drugpackaging materials and drug-consumption materials. A child under five years of age was also taken into the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

Kamloops provincial court Judge Chris Cleaveley granted Froyland two additional months to keep evidence without a charge. Typically, investigators are allowed to keep evidence for 90 days absent criminal charges.

Neither of the suspects is in custody.

Both are expected to make their first court appearance on April 3.

Trio arrested after B&Es Three people are in custody after Kamloops Mounties found a stolen vehicle parked outside their motel room — and stolen property inside the room.

Staff Sgt. Edward Preto said the trio was arrested in the motel room on Tuesday, March 14, once the stolen vehicle was discovered. A search warrant executed later that day led police to stolen property inside the room.

Facing a variety of charges, including break and enter and pos-

session of stolen property, are China Fern Davis, George Thomas Grant and Michael Kenneth Stone. Grant is also charged with possession of a prohibited weapon.

All three will next appear in court on Monday, March 20.

Preto said the charges are in connection to several break and enters committed in Kamloops earlier this week that involved an auto paint protection business, a concrete accessories supply business and a hardware supply store.

Cheung said the Freemasons and Kamloops Chinese Cultural Association have joined forces to care for the cemetery and are working with the Kamloops Museum and Archives to conduct tours of the site.

They are also in the process of improving the space, with a new gazebo in place and a Chinese garden in the planning stages.

The groups were recognized for their efforts earlier this year when they won a 2017 BC Heritage Award for their work in the cemetery.

Unveiling ceremonies tomorrow will begin at about 11:30 a.m. and will include a traditional lion dance and incense ceremony, which Cheung said will pay respect to those buried in the ceremony and their ancestors.

A historic Kamloops cemetery, among the oldest and largest of its kind in Canada, will get special recognition from the province of B.C. this weekend.

Elsie Cheung, president of the Kamloops Chinese Freemasons, said provincial Minister of International Trade Teresa Wat will be in the city tomorrow to unveil a plaque marking the Kamloops Chinese Cemetery’s historical significance.

It will also include text of a formal apology made to ChineseCanadians by the province in 2014.

It’s one of 21 places of historical significance to ChineseCanadians recognized by the province in 2016 as part of its pledge to make amends for historical injustices, including the head tax levied on Chinese immigrants. The fee was in place from 1885 to 1923, when Ottawa decided to ban nearly all Chinese immigration. By then, the tax had increased to $500 per person.

NEW YORK — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he takes President Donald Trump at his word when it comes to upcoming trade negotiations and continues to believe adjustments to NAFTA will be minor.

The prime minister made the remarks in an interview with NBC stalwart Tom Brokaw on an empty Broadway stage Wednesday, following a highprofile screening of a Canadianthemed play that was attended by the president’s daughter Ivanka.

It also followed a few days of signals from some key actors in the U.S. that they want important changes in the deal. That includes members of an influential Senate committee who want to open up Canada’s controls on dairy and poultry imports.

It’s not yet clear whether those demands will wind up on the negotiating table when talks eventually start or whether the lawmakers’ remarks about homestate industries reflect their own domestic politics.

Their remarks were a departure from the president’s: when

he met Trudeau at the White House, Trump spoke of making only minor tweaks to the trade relationship with Canada and more significant ones with Mexico.

“I very much take him at his word when he talks about just making a few tweaks,’’ Trudeau told Brokaw, in an interview that aired on yesterday’s Today Show.

“Because that’s what we’re always happy to do.”

He noted NAFTA had been altered a dozen times over the past 20 years — although those really were minor tweaks to rules of origin that did not require a vote in Congress.

It appears changes this time will require a vote. The administration is committed to working with Congress now and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross

is talking about adding entire new chapters.

Trump’s nominee for trade czar was peppered with questions this week by the Senate committee that will be involved in consultations and he expressed a willingness to raise supply management when senators pressed him on the effect that import controls have on their home-state economies.

The administration has made conflicting noises on whether Canada is an ally or adversary in these trade talks.

On the one hand, Ross has spoken about tough negotiations with Canada and Mexico.

On the other, trade adviser Peter Navarro is floating a North America First-type idea wherein car parts produced in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico would get more favourable treatment at the expense of imports from Asia.

NBC’s interview occurred after a Broadway play about Canadians helping Americans following the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

Trump’s daughter Ivanka attended and, on the day a U.S. court halted the president’s revised ban on travel from six predominantly Muslim countries,

some media drew attention to the fact that Trudeau brought her to a show about welcoming stranded outsiders.

Justin Trudeau Brings Ivanka Trump to Broadway Show on Welcoming Outsiders was the New York Times headline, while Time Magazine similarly reported, Justin Trudeau and Ivanka Trump Went to See a Broadway Show on Welcoming Refugees Together.

In fact, the prime minister, his wife, diplomats from 125 countries and cabinet ministers took in the play, Come From Away, about residents of Gander, Nfld., welcoming thousands of stranded passengers on 9-11.

One subplot of the play involves discrimination against a Muslim traveller in the group — the man is a world-class chef, sidelined from participating in kitchen tasks because, in the aftermath of the attacks, people are scared of him.

After the play, Trudeau did little to discourage or encourage comparisons that might strain relations with the White House as he met with audience members and exchanged hugs with the real-life people whose experi-

ences inspired the story.

Texan Kevin Tuerff, who inspired one of the characters, said the event changed his life.

After the tragedy, he gave employees at his company the day off on anniversaries of the attack and ordered them to spend the day committing acts of kindness.

He told the prime minister he appreciated his approach to welcoming refugees, contrasting that with his own country.

It was a similar, albeit longer exchange on that theme with Brokaw.

The NBC interviewer invited Trudeau to draw contrasts between himself and Trump: “[Trump has] made another effort to shut down or at least diminish the opportunity for immigrants to come here. Another judge has stepped in. You say, ‘Everyone is welcome here.’ What’s going to be the impact of that long-term, not just politically but economically and culturally?’”

Trudeau replied: “We’ll agree to disagree on certain things.

But I know, and I’ve always felt for Canada, that we recognize that diversity is a great source of strength.”

Charges against Canadian arrested in Yahoo hack may be ‘politically motivated’: lawyer 22-YEAR-OLD KARIM BARATOV ONE OF FOUR SUSPECTS IN HUGE EMAIL HACK, MAINTAINS HIS INNOCENCE THE CANADIAN PRESS

A lawyer for a Canadian man arrested as one of four suspects in a massive hack of Yahoo emails says the charges against his client may be “politically motivated by the U.S.” Jag Virk says his client, 22-year-old Karim Baratov, maintains his innocence and has no prior criminal record.

In an emailed statement, the lawyer said people shouldn’t be quick to judge and should wait for all facts to emerge in the case.

He did not indicate in what way political interests may have

played a role in the arrest.

Toronto police say Baratov was arrested on Tuesday in the Ontario community of Ancaster at the request of American authorities.

The U.S. Department of Justice says a grand jury in California has indicted Baratov and three others, two of them allegedly officers of the Russian Federal Security Service, for computer hacking, economic espionage and other criminal offences. U.S. officials said Baratov also went by the names Kay, Karim Taloverov

and Karim Akehmet Tokbergenov.

He was arrested under the extradition act and appeared in court in Hamilton on Wednesday morning, court staff said. His case has been put over until this afternoon, when he is expected to appear by video.

An acquaintance described Baratov as an exotic car buff who was popular and flashy but tight-lipped about his personal life — including his job, which involved working with computers.

Also indicted in the alleged conspiracy were Dmitry Aleksandrovich

Dokuchaev, 33, Igor Anatolyevich Sushchin, 43, and Alexsey Alexseyevich (Magg) Belan, 29, all Russian nationals and residents. Dokuchaev and Sushchin are said to be Russian intelligence agents who allegedly masterminded and directed the hacking, the department said.

Dokuchaev and Sushchin allegedly tasked Baratov with hacking more than 80 accounts in exchange for commissions, according to U.S. authorities, who submitted a provisional arrest warrant to Canadian authorities March 7.

ourage in the face of death looks like Kirk Guenther.

His Kamloops Predators epitomized that same steely-eyed resilience at Night of Champions in a comeback effort that transcended hockey, left grown men in tears and created a spine-tingling real-life fairytale on Wednesday at McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre.

Guenther, diagnosed with terminal colorectal cancer threeand-a-half years ago, is living on borrowed time.

He altered his chemotherapy treatment schedule to make sure he was there Wednesday night coaching his 12-year-old son, Connor, who, unlike many of his Predators’ teammates, knows Coach Kirk is gravely ill.

“I’m already a year-and-a-half beyond my life expectation,” Guenther said, sitting on the bench before the game, in the epicentre of the calm before the storm. “Every day I’m here is a real blessing. I’m not sure how much longer I’ve got to go. I’ll keep pushing as long as I can.”

Sick or not, the Predators-Ice Hawks peewee title clash was a big deal to Guenther.

The 49-year-old civil engineer has coached minor hockey for 10 years and never once made it to Night of Champions, the culmination of the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association recreation season, when house-league titles are decided in the atom, peewee, bantam and midget ranks.

“My life is on and off, I guess,” Guenther said. “It’s miserable at times for me and my family. But this is going to be a good week. I’ve made sure of that by changing the chemicals I take so I can be here.”

With 1:45 remaining in the first period, Reid Zunti morphed into Bobby Orr, skated the length of the ice and went top shelf to give his squad a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

It appeared the hockey gods weren’t interested in a feel-good story on Wednesday night.

“I was thinking we were going

to lose, but I knew we could come back,” Connor said. “At the intermission, my dad just said take it easy, rest, because he knew we could come back.”

It could have been tied after 20 minutes, but Sam Benastick was outstanding between the Ice Hawks’ pipes, stymying Connor and Jarrett Dumais, among others, on multiple occasions.

Benastick, who was named the Ice Hawks’ player of the game, continued his strong play early in the second period.

Again and again, he foiled the Predators. Ryan Petrie slammed his stick down on the bench in frustration. Connor looked up at his dad, perplexed, as if to say, ‘What’s it going to take to score on this guy?’

“We love our Sam!” screeched one cow-bell toting Ice Hawks’ fan, who was either really supportive or really annoying, according to differing glances shot her way. She continued to scream the Ice Hawk

squawk while the Predators came in waves, crashing Benastick’s crease, their confidence swelling as the tide was turning.

The Ice Hawks’ mesh would finally ripple with four minutes to play in the second period when Dumais’ shot ricocheted off Benastick and onto the stick of Logan MacLaughlin, who made no mistake on the rebound.

It was 3-1 after the second period.

“I never thought we were done,” coach Guenther said. “There was always time. I never thought we were finished. We trained these boys to never give up, but to actually see them not give up, it wrenches my heart and I’m so proud of them.”

Petrie bull-rushed the Ice Hawks’ net to score 45 seconds into the third period.

The comeback was on.

McArthur was a madhouse.

Dylan Cruickshank, who backstopped the Predators, was beaten

by three wrist shots in the first period that might have bothered Carey Price.

He was rock-solid the rest of the way, making key stops in the third stanza, including a jaw-dropping save on Adam Baker with two minutes to play.

Guenther called Cruickshank to the bench 20 seconds later, replacing the netminder with an extra attacker in a last-ditch effort to tie the game.

The Predators won a draw in the offensive zone and fed the puck down low to Micah Brownlee, whose goal with 1:19 to play sent the roof halfway to Knutsford.

“I was thinking, ‘Oh, no. We’re not going to get this and then — BOOM! — we got the goal to tie game,” said Predators’ energy man James Tosoff, who dodged several tape balls in the dressing room during a post-game interview.

Guenther signalled for a timeout before the restart to rally his troops. The stage was set for the big finish — a 2-on-1 with a storybook ending.

Dumais tore down the left wing through the neutral zone, flanked on his right by, who else, Connor Guenther, the ailing coach’s son whose desperate efforts to that point had all been foiled by Benastick.

“I stopped. He passed to me and, boom, five hole,” Connor said, recalling the game winner he’ll never forget, scored with 15.5 seconds remaining in the third period. “For my dad, it’s also really important for him because this is also his first time in the final. I think I made him really proud with my winning goal. It makes me feel really good.”

Proud doesn’t quite describe what Coach Kirk was feeling at that moment, knowing four unanswered goals had sealed a 4-3 victory.

At Trans Mountain, we take our commitment to environmental protection seriously.

As part of the Expansion Project, substantial work has gone into determining environmental impacts and mitigation methods to reduce the impact to the environment. We have also made efforts to narrow the pipeline corridor in order to reduce the potential for impacts and are committed to restoring the right-of way to native grassland vegetation following construction.

Since 2012, our environmental team has been out in the field studying a wide range of environmental features, including plants, soils, wildlife, species at risk and traditional land use.

to predict the effects associated with the Project, including those that could be caused by construction, operations, decommissioning or abandonment, as well as potential accidents and malfunctions.

These studies are being used to inform the more than 35 environmental plans Trans Mountain is developing in order to fulfill the 157 Conditions for the Project from the National Energy Board. Two of these Conditions directly relate to the Lac du Bois Grasslands: Condition 42 requires a Grasslands Survey and Mitigation Plan prior to construction and Condition 157 requires a Grasslands Reclamation Evaluation Report and Offset Plan to evaluate reclamation success after 10 years.

Site-specific mitigation and reclamation measures include revegetation of native grassland disturbed by the Project, reducing the extent along the corridor of invasive species already found in the grasslands, preventing introduction of new invasive species during construction and achieving a grassland function the same as, or better than, the baseline grassland function. Plenty of decisions lie ahead for Barry Dewar.

The Kamloops Storm general manager is looking at more questions than answers following the conclusion of his club’s 2016-2017 season, a campaign that ended in a five-game series loss to the Chase Heat in the second round of the KIJHL playoffs.

What will the team look like next year?

What will happen with the coaching staff? How did the first year at Memorial Arena go?

The answer to that last question might go a long way toward answering the others.

“Not very well,” an honest Dewar said when asked about the first season at his team’s downtown home. “But we are looking at different options to improve our attendance and usage of the facility.

“Our plan is to be back at Memorial Arena next season.”

The Storm have struggled at the ticket counter in recent years, but some nights at their Victoria Street barn marked new lows for the franchise. Attendance numbers at Wednesday night games were abysmal and, despite having fewer nights where their schedule conflicted with that of the Kamloops Blazers, the junior B club seemed no further ahead over the course of the season.

As the playoffs stretched on and the Storm pleaded for more fan support, Kamloops answered with a sparse Game 4 crowd, completely overshadowed by the showing of spectators who had trekked from nearby Chase.

The empty seats at Memorial may even force a change behind the bench.

“Ed [Patterson] is such a great coach,” Dewar said of his bench boss. “We actually had 10 players that we moved on this season to either the Western Hockey League or junior A — that’s a huge statistic.

“That’s a lot to do with coaching, what Ed and Kyle [Panasuk, assistant coach] have

brought to the table.

But, quite honestly, it also comes down to money. If I can’t find a source of revenue to pay Ed and Kyle, then it becomes hard to keep those kinds of talents.

“What we’re suffering this year is, looking forward, if we’re averaging 75 people a game, no, I’m not going to be able to pay Ed and he won’t be back,” Dewar continued.

“My plan is for him to return. But, obviously, if there’s an opportunity for him at the next level, I’m sure he would look at it and I’m sure he would embrace it.”

Patterson is unquestionably the most successful Storm coach in franchise history. He has coached the team

to four league championship series and has never missed the playoffs in his six years on the bench.

For his part, the two-time Doug Birks Division coach of the year is also taking a hard look at his future.

“I don’t know right now,” he told KTW this week.

“I’ll play it by ear.”

The Storm entered the season with a young group, a scenario that is likely to play out again in 2017-2018, with much of the team either moving on to the next level or stepping away from the game.

Despite falling short of the ultimate goal of a KIJHL championship, Patterson said he has no regrets in the way he

handled his roster this season.

“As far as Kyle and I go, there’s absolutely nothing more we could have done for this group. Plenty of years, I look back and wish I would have done different things. This is one year I can honestly say that we gave these kids every single tool they needed,” he said.

“It was just because we had a younger group that some nights they didn’t quite realize what they had in front of them.”

Uncertainty is often the norm in junior B. Clubs wait to find out which players have been cut from higher levels, stars can disappear as fast as they’re born, the performance a coach gets from his group can vary on any given night.

But it’s safe to say Kamloops has a bit more uncertainty than normal moving forward.

Unknown attendance figures may lead to the loss of a popular and talented coach, one whose reputation has led to the Storm punching above their weight class in previous recruitment cycles and whose teaching abilities have led to plenty of on-ice success.

The Kamloops Storm may look very different come September.

They are hoping the same can be said for the picture in the stands.

Tosoff: ‘It’s just such a Cinderella story’ From A17

“I really can’t put it into words,” said Guenther, whose wife of more than 25 years, Lesley, and 14-year-old son Corbin were watching in the stands. “I’m choking up.

But I’m proud of the whole team, not just my son.”

Tosoff was bouncing off the dressing-room walls: “The fourth goal, it was unreal. My blood was just

pumping through my body and my heart just dropped.

We scored and it just felt so good. It’s just such a Cinderella story.”

Netminder Cruickshank was asked about his coach after the game: “It feels a whole lot better knowing he went out there and he coached us even though he was sick. It was pretty cool his son got the goal.”

Guenther has faced

his own mortality behind the bench, hard-hitting moments that are impossible to escape, when he realizes there might not be a next season.

“I have those feelings now,” he said. “Hockey is a great passion for my boys, too. Something like that gives you an outlet or a reason to be around.”

James Cruickshank, Dylan’s father, would

love to have him back.

“He’s very passionate about teaching kids and putting the time and effort in,” James said. “He needs to be recognized just for that alone, nevermind the sickness he’s been battling.”

Assistant coach Cardell Dumais concurred: “Kirk’s always steady and takes everything as it goes. He doesn’t complain about

anything. He fights though it all. That’s a perfect ending for everything.”

After a few minutes of mayhem in the dressing room, Guenther asked his team to sit down.

The kids listened closely as he made a speech, the careful prose of a coach who chose each word as if it were his last.

“I just want to say how proud I am of you today,”

Guenther said. “You guys were down by three. You didn’t let it get to you. You kept fighting. You kept shooting. You kept rushing the net. You kept playing like the hockey team we trained to be all year. I’m very proud of you.”

Classics win 25 medals in Surrey The Kamloops Classic Swimming club captured 13 gold medals, four silver medals and eight bronze medals at the Swim B.C. Senior Provincial Open Swimming Championships in Surrey on the weekend.

The meet also resulted in a handful of qualifying swims for the Western Canadian and Junior Canadian swimming championships.

Cecilia Finch, Jack Savage, Eden Saari, Elise Laupland, Lauren Prokopetz and Ben Kloska achieved new time standards for the Western Canadian Swimming Championships, which will be held in Calgary next month.

Jackson Litke was the lone Classics swimmer to qualify for the Junior Canadian Swimming

Championships in Toronto in July.

In Surrey, Megan Dalke captured gold in the 200-metre freestyle and silver in both the 200m butterfly and 100m freestyle.

Eloise Ladyman won the 50m backstroke and was third in the 200m breaststroke. Emily Dagasso was second in the 50m backstroke, while Laupland was third in the 800m freestyle. Prokopetz was third in the 200m breaststroke.

Keana Smart won the 50m backstroke, while Ethan Jensen won bronze in both the 50m and 100m butterflies.

Ryley McRae won the 50m, 100m and 200m butterflies and finished second in the 1,500m freestyle. Jack Savage was third in the 1,500m freestyle.

Tyler Mrak grabbed six gold medals in the S13 Para Swimming Category, winning all of his events. Cameron Chambers, meanwhile, won the 200m butterfly and was third in both the 100m breaststroke and 100m butterfly of the S14 category.

The Thompson Rivers WolfPack swim team also competed at the meet.

Breena Rusnell won silver in the 50m backstroke and finished 10th in the 200m individual medley. Gabrielle Dagasso finished seventh in the 50m butterfly, while Joelle Young was eighth in the 400m IM and seventh in the 200m breaststroke.

Jagdeesh Uppal finished sixth in the 50m breaststroke and seventh in the 200m breaststroke.

SNIPERS BEST BULLDOGS The Snipers topped the Bulldogs 7-1 in the Night of Champions atom final.

US women don’t back down in wage dispute A USA Hockey-imposed deadline came and went yesterday, with members of the women’s national team standing by their decision to boycott the world championship later this month because of a wage dispute.

USA Hockey had told players they had until 5 p.m. EDT to decide, USA Hockey spokesman Dave Fischer said. The tournament begins March 31 in Plymouth, Mich., with training camp set to begin next week. The U.S. is the defending gold medallist .

The deadline came one day after the team announced it would boycott the tournament, citing a lack of progress in getting a labour pact with USA Hockey. They are seeking more pay and a four-year deal.

USA Hockey said it will “field a competitive team” for the International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Hockey Championship, but members of the U.S. team are skeptical that will happen in the event of a boycott.

“We’re unanimously united as a player pool,’’ Hilary Knight said.

“Good luck getting a suitable No. 1 competition to represent our country on a world stage. I kind of dare them. It’s tough.’’

Stars such as Knight, Amanda Kessel, captain Meghan Duggan and twins Jocelyne LamoureuxDavidson and Monique Lamoureux-Morando are leading the charge to skip the tournament.

Knight thinks other players who might be asked would refuse.

After learning USA Hockey was attempting to find an alternate team, the players said “we regret

CONGRATULATIONS Michelle Colli, daughter of Ken and Gail Colli and Brandon Pettigrew, son of Darlene and Jim Walker and nephew of Dorothy Woodland exchanged marriage vows at The Sunpeaks Grand Hotel on December 17th, 2016. Marriage Commissioner, Sandy Alexander, performed the ceremony with music provided by Common Sound.

A fairy tail like outdoor winter wonderland provided the backdrop for photos following the ceremony.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore an ivory A-line organza, sleeveless floor length gown with a sweetheart neckline, laced at the back with hunter green ribbon and accented with a belt of crystal and emerald gemstones. She wore a crystal accented headpiece with a white cascade veil bordered with emerald gems and carried a bouquet of 12 hand-tied red roses, accented with cedar & jewels, wrapped with white satin ribbon and hunter green braid.

The Ladies of Honour were Angelle Colli, Amanda Ramage, Brittany Marti, Shauna Labrie and Miranda McInnis. They wore floor length hunter green gowns and carried 12 white roses. The Flower Maidens, Elaina Colli and Keira Colli wore knee length red dresses and carried white baskets with red rose petals. The Bride wore a floor length green cloak and the bridal party wore grey fur shawls for outdoor photos while all the men were sporting red scarfs. The groom wore a formal black tuxedo, shirt and vest, accented with a red tie, and a red rose boutonniere. The Best Bro’s were Darin Pettigrew, Jeffrey Ramage Jr., Gregary Brunsgaard, Kyle Schlecht and Alexander Patterson.

They wore a formal black tuxedo & shirt, red vest and tie and a white rose boutonniere.

It is with great sadness that we announce Carol’s passing on March 12, 2017 in Kamloops, B.C. Carol was born in Edmonton, AB on November 3, 1945. Carol married Stan Kulchyski on May 21, 1966 in Edmonton, AB. She is survived by her husband of 50 years Stan, daughter Faye (Darren) Davidson, sons Norm Kulchyski and Gordon (Shannon) Kulchyski, grandchildren Anita, Michael, David, Kyle, Chyann and Emmett, great-grandchildren Jessica, Micayla, Don, Kas, Marcus and Mason, also sister-in-law Dayle, sisters Bernice, Donna and Sharon and many nieces and nephews.

Thank you to the nurses and staff in Emergency, 7 North, Kim, Brittany Nadine, Lisa (ICU) and Dr. Laupland and Dr. Schmidt.

Marilyn Oikawa Marilyn passed away peacefully on March 10, 2017 in Kamloops, BC. She is survived by her children Mark (Leigh) and Wendy (Mark). Her pride and joy were her three grandchildren Riley, Madelyn and Nicholas. She also leaves behind many family members and friends, including our extended family - the Andersons and Hurds.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 41 years Richard, brother Art and sister

Marilyn was a happy, compassionate, kind and loving person who wanted the best for her family and those around her. She demonstrated her conviction to help people with her nearly 40 year career as a nurse – most of which was spent on the maternity ward at Royal Inland Hospital.

She will be forever missed and remembered for the difference she made in the lives of her family, friends and all who knew her.

We would like to thank the doctors, nurses and all the staff at the Ponderosa Lodge, Royal Inland Hospital and Berwick on the Park.

April 19, 1939 – March 11, 2017

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother Barbara on March 11, 2017 at the age of 77.

She passed away peacefully after a six year struggle with cancer, with family by her side at the Royal Inland Hospital.

Barbara is survived by her two daughters Barbara Yelle, Darlene Yelle and one son Jean Claude Yelle, her four siblings Margaret Zadworny, Johnny Barry, Patrick Barry, Dean Barry adopted son Shea Miller and many great nieces and nephews, longtime family friend Dan Foord and her two beloved grandchildren Jamie Yelle and Joseph Yelle.

She is predeceased by her parents Margaret and John Barry, brother Bernard Barry and her grandson Joshua Yelle. Barbara lived a long and happy life, with many good friends and family whom loved her dearly. Barbara’s joy in life was her two grandchildren Jamie Yelle and Joseph Yelle and daughter Barbara Yelle, as well as her friends Joe Topolewski and Bea Eisler. Barbara was a devoted member of the OLPH Church in many ways. She will be forever missed by all who knew her and will stay in our hearts and memories forever.

A special thanks to home support nurses, John and Dan who brought her weekly prescriptions, nurses and staff at the Royal Inland Hospital on 3 West and to all who helped in mom’s care.

ne of the first decisions made by James Macdonald, the new artistic director for Western Canada Theatre, was to change the job title for thengeneral manager Lori Marchand to executive director.

It made sense, he said, because it more accurately reflected the key role she plays helping run the theatre company.

“It was just making sure she’s recognized as an equal partner and not a step below the artistic director,” Macdonald said. “We work together.”

Another commitment he had to make, he said while in Edmonton rehearsing a cast about to present Peter and the Starcatcher, was to find a place in the upcoming season for Children of God by Corey Payette, a play WCT has been workshopping and which tells a story that must be heard.

“It’s an incred-

ible, powerful story,” Macdonald said, a tale “young people need to see” as it looks at the residential-school story the country lives with, although this one is set to music.

In October 2015, when Payette was in Kamloops continuing to develop the play with a cast in the former residential school here, he explained how he turned his work into what Macdonald describes as “almost like an opera.”

Payette said music is embedded in his culture and when you cannot speak you sing.

It’s a story set in Northern Ontario, where he was born into the Oji-Cree nations, and focuses on a family whose children are sent to residential school. It takes place over two time periods decades apart and tells a story about coming to terms with who you are.

It will be the last play presented next season at Sagebrush Theatre, opening on March 29 and continuing to April 7.

Macdonald said in developing the season — former artistic director Daryl Cloran had already committed to a coproduction of The Birds and the Bees in partnership with Thousand Islands Playhouse — it was important to find a variety of works that appeal to those who are faithful supporters of live theatre in the city but also attract new people to take in a show.

He said his first year at the WCT helm involves developing trust with the community as a whole, so he looked for works with “a good heart, lots of smarts to it.

Nothing that will scare people off but no fluff, either.”

Cognizant of the yearlong celebration of the country’s 150th birthday, Macdonald looked for Canadiana stories, as well. That’s why he chose Glory by Tracey Power, which will be at Sagebrush Theatre from Feb. 22 to March 3.

“It’s a strong women’s story,” he said, “and it’s a story that’s important for young people to see.”

Based on a true story, it is set in 1931 in a small town in Ontario during the depression. A team of female softball players are dreading the arrival of winter but decide to take up the country’s national sport, becoming the Preston Rivulettes, starting a journey that changes their lives and women’s hockey forever.

Macdonald’s not an ABBA fan but said he was pleasantly surprised the recent production of Mamma Mia sold out — as did the Johnny Cash musical Ring of Fire — and found his toes tapping as he sat in the audience. That inspired inclusion of Million Dollar Quartet by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux, a musical with a solid story backing it up, he said.

Opening on Oct. 12 and continuing to Oct. 21 at Sagebrush Theatre, it will take the audience back to 1956.

BARENAKED AND BACK The Barenaked Ladies are coming to Kamloops this fall for a show at Sagebrush Theatre.

The band’s appearance on Nov. 11 is part of the Canada ONE-FIVE-OH Tour that will take the group coast-tocoast, kicking off in North Bay, Ont., on Sept. 30.

The band has partnered with Plus1 to collect $1 from every ticket that will go to support MusiCounts and putting musical instruments into the hands of kids who need them most.

The final play is Armstrong’s War by Governor General’s Award-winning playwright Colleen Murphy.

Macdonald also sees timeliness in it as it looks at two people with posttraumatic stress disorder — a 21-year-old Afghan conflict veteran and a 12-year-old paralyzed in a car accident.

They meet in a hospital and move forward in treatment together, eventually discovering a joy for life and the value of friendship and support. It’s at Pavilion Theatre.

Co-organizer Krystal Williams said the goal of the event is to put the focus on the movement

of dance and connecting with music.

“It’s more about the dance and less about the party,” she said.

Participants are encouraged to bring Get up to

A similar Just Dance event runs weekly in Vancouver. There is also a chapter in Vernon.

Williams said she and fellow organizer Daryl Black were partly inspired by family dances that used to be held at the Sunmore Spa. She said she thinks the event appeals to families with children,

who made up a big part of the crowd at the first Kamloops event, because it’s a chance for parents and kids to connect on the same level.

“We have a tonne of families where the parents are dancers and partiers and they choose not to bring their kids to parties because of the atmosphere, because other people might be on

drugs or drinking,” she said.

“A dance party like this where everybody’s sober is something you can bring your kids to and share that love of music and dance with your kids and with other parents and their kids. It’s a really wonderful way to grow community.”

For now, the parties will remain monthly,

but Williams said they could be held more freuquently if there is enough demand.

This month’s dance takes place on Friday, March 31, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 350-690 Lansdowne Street.

Admission is $5 per person or $10 per family.

James Murray will present at the downtown library on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Murray has been recognized for his storytelling with myriad awards.

Simply the Best for Grannies Music came into Luisa Marshall’s life early. She remembers as a child living in Manila breaking into song while she rode the jitney bus in her hometown.

Eventually, people started paying her when she sang.

Next, she took up the guitar and, as she grew, added other musical instruments to her list of skills.

Music was popular in the home, but her parents insisted she go to college, get a degree, have a skill to support her — but music kept calling and, eventually, one singer in particular spoke to Marshall.

It happened while in India with her band. A man in the audience asked her to put on a wig a la Tina Turner when she sang Proud Mary, a song forever

linked to Turner.

She donned the wig, belted out the song and her husband started to encourage her to bring more of Turner’s discography into her music.

Marshall will recreate Turner later this month at a fundraiser for the local branch of the CanGo Grannies and the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign run by the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

Marshall will be rocking out those classics — What’s Love Got To Do With It?, Simply the Best and, of course, Proud Mary — on March 28 at the Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre, 1250 Rogers Way. There are about 30 active members of the Kamloops CanGo Grannies.

Since 2004, they have raised more than $217,000 to support the Lewis foundation and its work in Africa with grandmothers.

The grandmothers’ campaign began in Canada as a grassroots response to the foundation faces that so many grandmothers are caring for grandchildren orphaned due to AIDS. It raises money to provide those grandmothers and grandchildren with counselling, nutrition, shelter, school supplies and other activities that help them also generate income.

The campaign is supported in Canada by 240 groups of what they refer to as grandmothers and grand-others.

Shutting down shortwave radio services hurts oppressed nations

n Jan. 31, the shortwave service of Radio Australia ended.

Radio Australia is the latest in a growing list of shortwave broadcasters that have recently stopped sending out their signals to the world, following Radio Netherlands, Radio Bulgaria and our own Radio Canada International.

In the past several years, many large shortwave broadcasters have scaled back their broadcasts, from the BBC in the U.K., to Voice of America in the United States and Deutsche Welle in Germany.

Here in North America, we don’t rely much on shortwave.

In addition, operating shortwave radio stations, which are powerful enough to broadcast across continents and over oceans, is fairly expensive.

Most radio signals are easily heard over the Internet and on smartphone apps.

There seems little reason to continue broadcasting via shortwave.

ou can’t escape the past in Santa Fe. It clings to you at every corner, stares at you from every doorway and window and speaks to you from ancient cliff dwellings in nearby hills.

Here you’ll find a physical and spiritual combination of aboriginal culture, imported European past and chic 21stcentury Americana.

No Disney-style theme-park here. It’s all real — a city of narrow, winding streets, inaudible serenity, tan adobe walls and 100-year-old shade trees.

It nurtures and guards its 18th-century look, preferring historic Spanish designs to contemporary architecture, the central core laid out to accommodate the needs of the 17th century, not the 21st.

It’s easy to be sidetracked in Santa Fe with its 400 restaurants, 250 art galleries, 70 jewelry shops, 14 museums and visual arts, dance, music, theatre and festivals.

But restaurants and art galleries are not all that draw people to what is also the smallest state capital in the U.S. The Hopi, Navajo, Spanish

and Ancestral Puebloans have all imprinted the region.

It’s a cultural potpourri that can be seen, worn and touched.

The city core seems a collection of small, bright things and where a variety of colours compete for the attention of your eyes red windows against a beige, sandy stucco background; a row of brightly colored mailboxes along Canyon Road where you’ll find countless art galleries; windows showing sparkling silver jewelry set with turquoise.

Canyon Road is a winding, uphill street east of downtown, that houses the tacky, the beautiful and the always fascinating shops and small galleries of Santa Fe where you can find everything Southwestern you ever thought you wanted.

Santa Fe dates from 1610, when Spanish explorers led by conquistador Don Pedro de Peralta, pushed up from Mexico along the Santa Fe Trail that began at Mexico City. Today’s street names (Paseo de Peralta, Guadalupe, Otero, De Vargas) — attest to its Spanish and Mexican past.

Santa Fe, for those curious about such things, means “Holy Faith” in Spanish.

The heart of the old town is the scenic Plaza, site of

cultural events throughout the year, including the Indian Market during the third week in August, the largest juried Indian arts and crafts show in the world.

Paintings, pottery and jewelry are fashioned by some of the region’s most celebrated artists and designers.

In 1680, Spanish and natives clashed for control of the city and territory on that spot.

The Spanish, having only about 150 soldiers to hold the area, lost it to the Pueblo Indians, but recaptured it in the summer of 1692.

You can get a taste of what life was like back then by visiting San Miguel Chapel (401 Old Santa Fe Trail at De Vargas) the city’s oldest church, built in the 1600s by the Tlaxcala Indians, who came from Mexico as servants of the Spanish conquistadors.

In it is the San Jose Bell, built in Spain in 1356 and transported from Mexico City along the Santa Fe Trail.

Next door is a terrific gift shop in what is thought to be the oldest house in America.

On the edge of the plaza is the Palace of the Governors, first built in 1610, housing the first Spanish governor.

It’s now the museum of

history for New Mexico and should be the first place to head to for a background on what makes the city tick.

Across the street is the Museum of Fine Arts with its collection of 8,000 art pieces, including those of Georgia O’Keeffe and well-known New Mexican artists.

There is also a stand-alone Georgia O’Keeffe Museum on Johnson Street about two blocks northwest of the Plaza.

But no trip to Santa Fe is complete without an exploration of the ancient peoples who started the whole thing centuries ago, the Ancestral Puebloans civilization.

At Bandelier National Monument — near Los Alamos, an hour’s drive from Santa Fe — climb through the cave rooms that housed these ancient peoples.

Stand at the centre of the kiva, the heart of the old community, and glance upwards into the cliff sides.

It’s a haunting place — at once defining a people, now making your own existence seem less permanent.

Ladies and gentlemen — the real St. Patrick

I

t is St. Patrick’s Day, the day for all things green: green beer, green food, green bling, green hats with shamrocks and St. Patrick’s Day parades everywhere.

It is a day to be Irish, or wannabe Irish, because this is when the Irish honour St. Patrick (c.386-461 or 493).

The truth is Patrick was not Irish. He was born into a wealthy Roman Briton home in a village along the west coast of England or Wales. His father was involved in local municipal affairs.

Patrick’s parents were devout Christians, though Patrick himself admits in his biography, Confessio, that he resisted the faith of his parents.

At age 16, Patrick was captured by Irish pirates and sold into slavery to a sheep herder in Ireland, where he tended sheep for the next six years of his life. The countryside of Ireland, with its harsh winters and long hot summers, became the place for Patrick’s soul to be transformed.

Long stretches of silence and loneliness softened his heart to the gentle nudging of the Spirit of God within.

In addition, he learned the local language, Irish Gaelic, and the culture of his captors.

One night, in a dream, he was instructed to escape and, miraculously, found his way safely back home, to the delight of his parents.

His mother was particularly thrilled as she envisioned her son settling down, marrying a nice girl and giving her lots of grandchildren.

That was not to be.

Later, again in a dream, a man beckons him to return to the green isle and bring Christ to the Irish. Patrick ponders the dream and accepts the invitation. Following theological training and ordination in Gaul, he returns to Ireland as a bishop in 432.

For the remainder of his life, Patrick walked through the countryside of Ireland, preaching the message of Jesus to town and country people alike.

Also, as he was able to, Patrick visited local chieftains, aware that if a chieftain came to faith in Christ, so would the clan.

And many did.

In time, small churches sprang up in the countryside of Ireland as a result of Patrick’s preaching ministry.

Of course, there were resistances to his preaching, particularly from the Druidic religious leaders and some kings.

On one occasion, having been forewarned of imminent danger, he ran into the forest to hide, only to be found. As his enemies came to seize him, Patrick disappeared and a deer stood in the place where he had been.

It ran off to safety.

Shape-shifting was known within cultural lore and, seemingly, Patrick had been transformed into a deer.

Really? Is that true?

Well, I can’t say for sure as I wasn’t there to see, but it is how the story is told.

However, this has happened before in another setting.

Take a moment to read the account recorded in the Old Testament, in II Kings 6:8-23, where the Lord God allows the servant to see what is not seen.

Were Patrick’s enemies allowed to see only what was intended to be seen?

Patrick had little tolerance for some cultural norms, such as slavery and human sacrifices. He had a significant amount of success in bringing these to an end.

Conversely, Patrick wisely assessed cultural norms he carried into the Irish Christian church. The Irish were an egalitarian society: Irish women had greater opportunities than their Roman and Greek counterparts. The Irish church was known for its openness to ordain women and men to all levels of ministry.

Ritualistic forms

of worship, a depth of Trinitarian belief, a respect and love for the created world, recognizing sacred “thin places,” the value of the richness and beauty of the Holy Scriptures, comfortableness with mystery of faith, the practice of “soul friendship,” poetic expressions of prayer and worship and welcoming the stranger became embedded into the fabric of Irish Christian Celtic spirituality.

Much of the development of the Irish church happened under the tutelage of a courageous, focused, tenacious servant of God. Patrick’s legacy would live on in the lives of people who continued to enrich the Irish church over the following centuries.

Did Patrick rid Ireland of snakes? No, snakes didn’t live there.

Did he use the shamrock to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity? Maybe.

Did his walking stick that he stuck into the ground grow into a tree?

It could have.

Would he be pleased with all the fuss made over his day?

Probably not.

However, he would be pleased to welcome you into a conversation about his love for Jesus over a pint at the local pub.
