JASON GOURLAY

JENNIFER GATEY

Accused in hit and run in court today A Kamloops man accused of fleeing the scene of a fatal hit and run collision in Aberdeen last year won’t find out until at least today whether he will be released from jail. Jason Gourlay was arrested on Friday, March 3. On Tuesday, he was charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident and possession of heroin and fentanyl. The 40-year-old is accused of driving a Jeep that struck and killed 16-year-old Jennifer Gatey on Nov. 4. Gatey was crossing Pacific Way south of Aberdeen Drive and headed to a bus stop less than a block from her family’s home when she was hit. Two days later, a Jeep owned by Gourlay was seized from the driveway of his Dufferin home. Gourlay is also facing an unrelated theft charge dating back to September. He is expected to make his first court appearance on that allegation later this month. Gourlay is scheduled to appear in Kamloops provincial court today for a bail hearing.

POWER FAILURE IMPACTS WATER SUPPLY ANDREA KLASSEN STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

Water treatment in Kamloops came to a standstill for more than seven hours yesterday morning after a transformer blowout scrambled some of the software at the city’s plant. Public works director Jen Fretz said the

transformer blew at about 4 a.m. yesterday morning. While the city has backup generators, the software disruption meant no new clean water was flowing into city reservoirs. At about 2 p.m., the city announced it believed it had reached a solution and was beginning to bring pumps back online, but residents were advised to conserve water

use until the end of the work day while testing of the system was completed. Fretz said it’s not yet known why the transformer blew. Utilities manager Greg Wightman said at no point was water quality compromised during the shutdown. “This isn’t an issue of quality, only quantity,” he said.
