Cathy McLeod wants an answer from the government on why it approved a Chinese company’s purchase of a retirement-home chain — and if that OK is linked in any way to a fundraiser the federal Liberal party had with billionaires from that country in November.

The Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo Conservative MP asked during Question Period on Wednesday about what she considers a worrisome decision giving approval to a foreign investor with what she called murky ownership.

“It should be no surprise to anyone that the prime minister has now approved the sale,” McLeod said. “This was just three months after a Chinese lobbyist bought access to the prime minister at a fundraiser. I asked the prime minister outright — was his approval bought?”

She said she did not receive an answer from the governing Liberals.

The purchase of Retirement Concepts by Cedar Tree Investment Canada — a Canadian subsidiary of Anbang Insurance Group in China — includes properties in B.C., Alberta and Quebec. Locally, it includes Kamloops Seniors Village on Hugh Allan Drive.

McLeod pointed to the $1,500 per person fundraiser the federal Liberals held at the

Toronto home of Benson Wong, chair of the Chinese Business Chamber of Commerce.

Also attending was Zhang Bin, a political adviser to the Chinese government, insurance tycoon Shenglin Xian and several other Chinese billionaires.

Jennifer Whiteside, secretary-general manager of the Hospital Employees’ Union that represents workers in the facilities, said she remains concerned about the sale because it puts into the hands of a private equity fund “what amounts to a public asset.”

Whiteside pointed to the $86 million Retirement Concepts bills the provincial government annually to operate the retirement homes through contracts with health authorities,.

“So, they are really subsidized by taxpayers,” Whiteside said.

“What happens down the road with this private equity fund if it runs into liquidity problems or owning these homes no longer meets their business plan? What is the government’s plan to protect these assets?”

At the time the potential deal became public, Health Minister Terry Lake said the Chinese subsidiary had assured patients, families and staff it would make no changes to operations and the expectation was “patients residing in these facilities will continue to get the same qualify of care.”

Because a non-Canadian business was try-

ing to acquire control of a Canadian one with a value greater than $600 million, the purchase had to be reviewed at the federal level.

McLeod called the “cash for access fundraiser” wrong and wants to know why, three months later, the purchase was approved when it remains unclear who owns the parent company.

She said she was also concerned Morgan Stanley, which was involved in an Anbang attempt to buy Starwood Hotels and Resorts, passed on the deal, citing the Chinese company’s reluctance to provide details of its ownership structure. Anbang eventually abandoned the deal.

An article published in the New York Times last year on the Chinese insurance company attempted to identify the owners of the business, which has $295 billion in assets, eventually reporting 35 of the companies that combined own almost all of Anbang are related to the granddaughter of former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping or to one of former Chinese leader Mao Tse-Tung’s marshals.

“There is limited information provided on the ownership,” McLeod said.

She acknowledged the province has stringent licencing criteria for care homes but she believes people who choose to live in one of them “should be able to understand who owns it.”

Lawyers for a man accused of weapons charges after police pulled him over while he was carrying a loaded shotgun will seek leave to appeal a decision to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Charles Patrick walked away in November 2015 after a B.C. Supreme Court justice determined police made a number of serious errors that breached the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Anthony Varesi, a lawyer acting for Patrick, confirmed the defence will seek leave to appeal the decision ordering a new trial to Canada’s highest court.

The incident began on Dec. 11, 2013, when Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Kelly Butler pulled over an SUV with four men inside, including Patrick at the wheel.

Butler called for backup and three other Mounties arrived.

The three passengers were co-operative

and, potentially, other evidence.

A lawyer representing the Jeep’s owner has said he opposes the extension.

Police are generally allowed to keep seized items for 90 days.

If no charges are laid during that time, the items must be returned unless a judge decides otherwise.

The hearing is scheduled to take place in Kamloops provincial court on March 9.

when asked to leave the vehicle, but Patrick delayed and fumbled with something inside.

When Patrick got out of the vehicle, Cpl. Kelly Butler noticed a bulge in his jacket.

The Mountie asked Patrick, “Do you have something on you?”

Patrick patted his jacket and told her he had a shotgun.

The trial judged ruled that question breached Patrick’s Charter rights because other Mounties were present and she had no cause to fear he would be violent.

Instead, the judge said, Butler should

have proceeded directly to patting Patrick down.

But the B.C. Court of Appeal ruled the question was not unreasonable and Butler had cause to fear for her safety and that of the other officers.

The province’s top court rejected a later search of Patrick’s home, however, that turned up what a Crown prosecutor called a “chop shop” for guns.

Patrick’s second trial will await a decision by the Supreme Court of Canada whether it will hear the defence appeal.

City director of development and engineering services Marvin Kwiatkowski told city council on Tuesday the casino wants to be able to serve alcohol during sports events that begin before noon.

Kwiatkowski said Kamloops RCMP has no concerns about the change, but noted the city’s

social planning council doesn’t like the idea of adding another hour of alcohol service.

Kwiatkowski said the social planning council continues to have reservations about alcohol being served to gamblers.

He said 18 B.C. casinos already offer booze at 10 a.m.

Council will decide whether to pass a resolution in support of the change at a later meeting.

Warning was false alarm A man reported as acting suspiciously outside a Westsyde school on Wednesday afternoon did not have bad intentions, according to Kamloops Mounties.

Police had sent out a warning following a report by children of a man who spoke to them outside Arthur Stevenson elementary and reached out for them.

In fact, said Cpl. Jodi Shelkie, “further investiga-

tion showed that the male was greeting other students nearby who knew him.

“All parties involved were identified and it was confirmed that they knew each other. The exchange between the male and the children was confirmed as not being suspicious.”

Lange, Singh, want cash to go back to taxpayers ANDREA KLASSEN

A decision on what to do with a $1.9 million windfall from Multi-Material BC (MMBC) won’t come until the fall, but a pair of councillors want to see the money go back to the city’s ratepayers.

The new agreement will see the city get about $1.1 million per year from MMBC, which is charged with ensuring packaging and paper products are recycled. The organization will also cover the approximately $800,000 cost of sorting the city’s

recycling. It goes into effect in April.

Public works director Jen Fretz told city council on Tuesday that staff are recommending the money — about $1.4 million this year, since the program is starting late — be placed in a reserve until the fall, since utility rates are already set for 2017.

In the meantime, staff will investigate the cost of adding foodwaste pickup service to its roster of collection options, as well as the cost of collecting glass and soft plastics separately.

Merek De Witte hasn’t been able to make it out to Kamloops city council’s budget debates since they take place during school hours.

But the teen leading the charge to bring a skate park to Rayleigh is liking what he hears about them.

At their most recent budget meeting, councillors indicated they will most likely add the $250,000 project to this year’s budget, which will be adopted in the spring.

The park and a bicycle pump track would be funded with gambling money, which the city gets from local casinos, and would replace Raemore Park’s existing basketball courts, which parks staff say aren’t being used because the asphalt is in poor condition.

“We’re pretty hopeful and we’re pretty happy it’s looking good in the council and the councillors think it’s a good idea,” said De Witte, 13, who collected more than 600 signatures from neighbours in support of the project.

He also led a delegation of teens at the city’s last public budget input night in November.

De Witte said the park would provide a muchneeded recreational space for kids in the neighbourhood, which is at least a half-hour bus ride from the McArthur Island skate park.

“It gives a lot of people the chance to learn how to ride a skateboard or get better at riding a bike or a skateboard or a scooter. And it’s going to make people more active,” he said.

Byron McCorkell, the city’s director of parks, recreation and cultural services, told council upkeep on the skate park should be simple and won’t require more maintenance time than is already budgeted for the park on Arab Run Road.

De Witte is planning to attend the city’s final public consultation on the budget, which takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Sandman Centre beginning at 7 p.m., to show his continuing support for the park.

So far, he’s feeling positive about his first lobbying attempt.

“I’ve been a little bit nervous, but it’s not that bad,” he said.

“It’s actually kind of fun.”

agreement, residents won’t be able to recycle either of those materials in their blue bins.

Instead, they will need to go to recycling depots to drop off those items, unless the city comes up with another pickup option.

Fretz said staff will also crunch the numbers to determine how the cash would change rates for solid-waste service.

Coun. Tina Lange would prefer to see the money go back to Kamloopsians.

“I’m not in favour of collecting kitchen waste,” she said. “I think that to drive a great big, belching diesel truck down alleyways to collect a little bit of kitchen waste is not green. People need to learn to compost in

their own backyards or we need neighbourhood composting, like they’re starting to do in some communities.”

Coun. Arjun Singh said he would need to hear from the public that there’s enthusiasm for new pickup options

before he would favour a new service over a rate cut.

“If people really, really want this new program, OK, let’s talk about it,” he said.

“But this is a chance to give people some relief on their bills.”

Liberal government’s pledge to cut MSP premiums for households earning less than $120,000 a year. While the announcement comes in an election year — with reductions conveniently not set to take effect until January 2018 — it will help many British Columbians, many of whom continue to pay high premiums without the luxury of having a family doctor. B.C. is the only province still charging a flat rate health tax. It’s past time it was incorporated into income taxes.

NOT: That putrid smell throughout the city last Saturday afternoon, the result of a 2.5hour power outage at Domtar’s pulp mill on Mission Flats. The release of reduced sulphur gas added up to emissions numbers usually seen over an entire year. While it isn’t considered a health concern, many who had planned weekend outdoor activities as far away as Valleyview were left with a sour taste, er, smell.

HOT: New rules for local food trucks. While businesses continue pulling out of downtown, the city has loosened its noose on the owners of the ever-trendy restaurants on wheels, which will hopefully add vibrancy to the downtown core. Food truck owners have been asking for better hours and other changes and feel positive about changes ahead of spring, when they will hit the streets. Even downtown restaurateur Dino Bernardo lauded the changes. It’s nice to see city council get with the times.

Famines result of war

F

or the first time in six years, there is famine in the world: a real, United Nationsdeclared famine, with more than 30 per cent of the affected population suffering acute malnutrition and more than 1,000 people dying of hunger each day.

And there are three more countries where famine may be declared any day now.

As you would expect, all four current and impending famines are in war zones.

As you might not expect, one of the afflicted countries is not in Africa. It is war-torn Yemen, the poorest Arab country, whose 22-million people depended on imports for 90 per cent of their food. With most of Yemen in rebel hands and daily air raids, food is no longer making it in.

But the other three places are indeed African: South Sudan, Somalia and northeastern Nigeria. The official famine is in South Sudan, where, after three years of brutal civil war, 40 per cent of the population, some five-million people, are starting to starve.

There are poor people elsewhere, but apart from North Korea in 1996, every famine of the past 40 years has been in Africa.

It’s usually linked to armed conflict, of course, and most of the world’s wars are in Africa, but that just pushes the argument back one step.

Only the Arab world, a much smaller region, even begins to compete, and its wars, bad as they are, almost never cause famines.

Africa is a global outlier and there must be some common factor beyond mere politics that makes it the global capital for wars and famines.

The big thing that distinguishes Africa from the rest of the planet (except, once again, the Arab world) is a rapidly growing population: the average fertility rate across the African continent is 4.6 children per woman.

That was about the average fertility rate of the whole human race in 1960, when the entire world’s population was exploding.

But the global fertility rate has halved since then, while Africa’s has stayed much the same. If it remains at this level for the rest of the century, today’s one-billion Africans would become seven billion and half the human race would

be African in 2100.

In fact, the fertility rate is forecast to fall gradually in most African countries, although some countries — Niger, Mali and Uganda, for example — will continue to have higher birth rates.

But the fertility rate is falling very slowly. The forecast is that by 2045, the average African woman will be having only three children — but anything above 2.2 children per woman means the population is still growing.

The forecast of the United Nations Population Division is that Africa’s population will almost quadruple by the end of the century, while most other countries stand still or even fall.

That means there will be 3.6-billion Africans by 2100 — a third of the human race.

It also means war and famine may be their constant companions.

Africa is having famines long before there is an actual shortage of food in the continent.

It’s having wars that are essentially over the division of the spoils (like South Sudan) in economies where there is simply not enough wealth to go around.

Unless it can somehow get its population growth under control, it will just go on getting worse.

Deny climate change exists, accept we can’t do anything — or just blame America Editor: Kudos to Premier Christy Clark and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for their approval of Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

Their approval sends the signal they must have bought into the theory of U.S. Trumpniks, that climate change is a Chinese hoax. Donald Trump’s theory is Taoism, actually, and its brilliance is this: all we have to do is nothing.

“Do nothing and good will prevail.” — Lao Tzu. I’m not sure how the Chinese got 98 per cent of the crooked climate scientists to sing from the same song sheet (water torture?), but they are spreading fake news that global warming, besides causing mass extinctions, is also causing the drying up of the rainforests, desertification and the sea levels to rise due to the seemingly terminal meltdown of the sea ice, glaciers and polar ice caps.

The scientists say the result of these problems will be to drive millions and millions of people from their homes.

The most bogus claim of all, though, is that scientists are saying it is human-caused greenhouse gases that are responsible for the climate problems and the net result of our generations’ inaction will be to bequeath our children and grandchildren with heartbreaking dilemmas, such as: Who sits in the shade? Who burns in the sun?

Who drinks? Who is thirsty? Who eats? Who starves? Who swims? Who sinks? Who lives?

Who dies?

Now, on the one-in-a-trillion chance Trump, Clark, Trudeau and this old fool are wrong and the crooked old scientists are right, there is going to be a lot of angry people about.

So I thought I would share some strategies for dealing with any awkward questions about our inaction: Simple denial: Climate change doesn’t

exist — period. End of story.

Minimize: Of course it is getting hotter, but it’s all part of a natural cycle. It was much hotter in the Middle Ages.

Rationalize: We can’t do anything about climate change because it would destroy the economy. Besides, we would have to raise taxes.

Intellectualize: How reliable are the figures for climate change? Everybody is just guessing.

Blaming: The real problem isn’t carbon, it’s that the sun is getting more radiant.

Bargain: It’s America’s fault. I’ll do something when the Americans do.

Passivity: What could I do? It’s just little old me against the big old system.

Morally decouple: Frankly Scarlet, you are confusing me with someone who give a damn.

IF IT’S DYING, WHY IS PARKING TIGHT?

Venture Kamloops head sees downtown in transition phase DALE BASS

or Jim Anderson, the easiest answer to a question on the vitality of the city’s downtown can be summed up in one question: “If it’s dying down there, why can I never find a parking spot?”

The question is more anecdotal, the CEO of Venture Kamloops conceded, but the fact parking woes continue to be discussed tells Anderson there are people coming downtown.

The oft-returned-to discussion gained new interest in recent days as news spread about the impending departure of Value Village from its Seymour Street site to the empty space at Sahali Mall that once housed Target.

The conversation was fuelled by statements Coun. Denis Walsh made to local media questioning just how thriving the downtown is these days, a viewpoint from which he is not backing away from, arguing there is no vision for the area.

He puts that squarely on the doorstep of the Kamloops Centre Business Improvement Association (KCBIA) and his own city council.

“They don’t listen to actual people,” Walsh said of council and its administration. “And the KCBIA doesn’t listen to the businesses.”

KCBIA general manager Gay Pooler takes issue with Walsh’s comments.

She noted the association’s mandate requires it have on its board directors who represent property owners and tenants.

“We represent more than retailers,” Pooler said, noting during the KCBIA’s renewal process last year, it received “a 94 or 98 per cent approval rating from our members, so we must be doing something right.”

Mike Popoff, KCBIA board president, also disagrees with Walsh’s statements about the vitality of the downtown, pointing to residential growth that has happened or is expected to happen.

That includes a planned two-building, 72-unit townhouse complex to be built between The Courtyard residences on Lorne Street and the Red Bridge.

Residential growth also includes the planned residential/retail expansion by the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on St. Paul Street. Sixty-four units are planned for the corner of Third Avenue and St. Paul Street, a project that will also have storefront commercial opportunities.

There is also a rental project being built at Eighth Avenue and Battle Street.

Popoff said the board works with the city and Venture Kamloops to create incentives that will attract capital investment downtown.

That includes a campaign Venture Kamloops has created and is taking on the road in a bid to entice developers from outside the area to come to Kamloops with their money and ideas.

Anderson said he presented it to a luncheon of about 300 developers recently to a warm reception.

It helps that the South Shore of the city was identified recently in Western Business magazine as the best place in Canada for a developer to invest money, Anderson added.

He said it’s important for people to realize the way to grow the downtown is not to believe in the adage “If you build it, they will come,” he said. Instead, he said, residential is key because “business will go where people are.”

To attract people, the downtown must provide an experience, Pooler said. She sees it happening through the new Cycle Logic bike shop, the Kamloops Billiards Club, Barre Kamloops and the Countdown Escape Rooms — building on the experiential nature of the downtown that coffee shops, pubs and restaurants have already built.

Anderson sees the downtown being in transition, with plenty happening beyond residential projects.

He pointed to Hotel 540 as an example of an outlet that, after losing the casino that once took up a large part of its footprint on Victoria Street, is now renovating, with the goal of bringing in a marquee tenant.

“They’re taking that risk and building an attractive, street-friendly site,” Anderson said.

Should they stay or should they go?

Two viewpoints on downtown, one from a retailer who left and one from a retailer who is staying: STAYING: JODY TIPPETT, CADUCEUS CHOCOLATES, 228 THIRD AVE. I’m a new business and tend to cater to a pretty niche demographic, so I see certain faces regularly. As my brand grows and word of mouth spreads, that number has been growing. This is also due to exposure and support from Tourism Kamloops, the chamber of commerce and local corporate business.

Traffic during the week is consistent and, as the weather improves, I anticipate the weekends will pick up as well — until it gets too hot for chocolate. I’ll pick my future holiday time accordingly.

For the next month, I have made the decision to move to reduced hours. I hope to ramp up my online presence and offer local delivery.

I love downtown. It’s home. I am a loyal patron and don’t sell anything I don’t desire or wouldn’t purchase.

Those four or five blocks of Victoria Street are incredibly vibrant, but the structure of the downtown is built so it can’t expand from that. The one-way streets are not conducive to walk-by traffic. It’s a catch22 because we need people to be able to drive through town fluidly, but it prohibits the boutique-style area of town from expanding.

Events like those put on by the KCBIA do not really increase the regular traffic outside of event days. I literally had to close my shop every time there was an event on Victoria Street because all those people just walked right on by and my customers couldn’t get to my shop.

The focus of the BIA is on the businesses that are already successful.

Denis Walsh would like to see some changes on the board of the Kamloops Centre Business Improvement Association (KCBIA).

“At least half should be on the street,” the city councillor said, explaining he sees only three representatives from the retail sector on the board.

The association’s annual general meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28, when new elections to the board will be held. It now consists of Michael Popoff of Sunias Ventures as president, Ryan Gentile of Big Boot Inn/Red Wing Shoes as vice-president, Mike O’Reilly of Caffe Motivo as secretary, Scott Campbell of Campbell and Company as treasurer and Shatha Al-Reihani of the Plaza Hotel as a director at large.

Walsh said he’s not questioning the commitment of the directors, but feels they may have a different view of the downtown because they aren’t retailers.

Walsh has been speaking out to media about his views on the vitality of the city’s downtown — in particular about the empty buildings and storefronts.

The most recent to leave is longtime retailer Erwin’s Bakery, which has moved outside of city limits to the Mount Paul Industrial Park. Value Village on Seymour Street has

plans to move to Sahali Mall later this year and, Walsh said, he knows of other businesses planning to leave the downtown.

He said he is frustrated there have been no new ideas from the KCBIA after the defeat of a performing-arts centre referendum in the fall of 2015.

“There’s no vision, no Plan B, and we need a 400- or 500-seat arena, something to take pressure off Sagebrush Theatre,” Walsh said.

KCBIA general manager Gay Pooler said it’s not up to her association to develop a new plan to create a major anchor in the area, although she said its directors have been working behind the scenes “pushing our ideas at every meeting with the city. We go in the back door to get things done.”

Allure of downtown: low rent, more restaurants and walkable DALE BASS

Mona Murray has a client who loves to come up from his home in California to check on his project in Kamloops.

“He just loves the restaurants downtown,” the managing broker of MCM Realty said. “He loves coming up here.”

Murray said those “cozy little places where you can have a beer or a coffee” are what helps make the downtown area popular.

She doesn’t see a dire future for the area, but one of transition and growth.

Murray’s viewpoints are echoed

by Tanya Cokran, who works with her and handles many of the sales and leasing files the realty company has, particularly in the downtown area.

Cokran said when she moved to Kamloops from Prince George, she felt like the busiest part of downtown was restricted to the 100- and 200-blocks, but noted it has grown to encompass from First Avenue through to Sixth Avenue — and, in some ways, even beyond.

“There are more restaurants than there have been in a long time,” Cokran said, praising the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association for its work promoting the area and activities.

The pair said when assessing the vibrancy of a downtown area, one has to consider changing trends, particularly in the retail sector.

Murray said the message she heard at the annual International Council of Shopping Centres gathering was that online shopping is having an impact on retail and it’s not only downtowns that are struggling — shopping malls are feeling the same impact.

Murray said during a trip to the U.S. South, she saw many malls with Goodwill thrift shops or similar outlets as anchor tenants.

The way young professionals set up their offices has also changed, Murray said. Often, they are techsavvy and want smaller and open spaces rather than traditional offices.

Murray sees plenty of reasons why the city’s downtown area is attractive.

UN monitoring asylum seekers TRUDEAU, TRUMP CHAT BY OTTAWA — The United Nations refugee agency is keeping a careful eye on the situation at the Canada-U.S. border, where dozens of people have been crossing illegally in recent weeks to seek asylum.

Nearly $3B approved by feds to go unspent THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA — The federal budget watchdog says nearly $3 billion in planned government spending that

had been approved

by Parliament will go unspent this fiscal year.

The parliamentary budget officer says the government’s most-recent spending projections indicate

that this money has been administratively frozen.

The analysis said these sums can no longer be spent by federal organizations in 2016-17 and will lapse

at the end of the 20162017 fiscal year.

The budget office report says the Treasury Board of Canada could decide to change the years in which the approved

Supreme Court clarifies expert evidence in drugged-driving cases OTTAWA — The Supreme Court of Canada says expert testimony can be admitted in drugged-driving trials without a preliminary examination of the evidence. The high court decision in the case of an Ottawa motorist yesterday will pave the way for speedier justice in cases involving suspected drug impairment at the wheel.

In May 2009, Carson Bingley cut off a driver, crossed the centre line and drove into the

opposite lane, nearly striking oncoming traffic, and soon after he bumped a car in a parking lot.

He failed sobriety tests administered by a drug-recognition expert and admitted to smoking marijuana, but was acquitted of driving while drug-impaired despite the expert’s evidence, which the judge found could be admitted without a voir dire or preliminary examination of the evidence.

An appeal led to a second trial, where a judge found the evidence must be vetted in a voir dire and the subsequent preliminary examination led the judge to rule the expert evidence inadmissible, resulting in a second acquittal. The Crown successfully appealed again, a third trial was ordered and the Supreme Court ruling means that trial will go ahead.

Appeal granted in airline policy case OTTAWA — The Supreme Court of Canada has granted Delta Air Lines leave to appeal a ruling that found a Halifax passenger rights advocate should be able to stand up for obese people

even though he isn’t overweight himself.

The court ruled yesterday it would look at a Federal Court of Appeal ruling involving Gabor Lukacs and a Canadian Transportation Agency complaint in 2014.

The complaint was over Delta bumping obese travellers or making them buy two seats on a plane, which Lukacs argued was discriminatory.

Accused claims sexual acts were consensual TIM PETRUK

A former Thompson Rivers University student accused of raping an 18-year-old woman and aggressively fondling her 19-yearold friend following a New Year’s party two years ago said his sexual encounters with both women were completely consensual.

Matthew Rittinger is standing trial in B.C. Supreme Court in Kamloops on two counts of sexual assault.

The 25-year-old was charged in connection to his alleged actions

in the early-morning hours of Jan. 1, 2015.

According to the Crown, Rittinger invited the women — who he met for the first time at a New Year’s Eve party at an Aberdeen house — to his offcampus residence after they had trouble finding a ride home.

Crown prosecutor Camille Cook said Rittinger aggressively grabbed the genitals of the 19-year-old woman in his bedroom. When she rebuffed him, Cook said, Rittinger crawled into bed with the passed-out 18-yearold woman and began having sex with her.

Both women have testified at Rittinger’s trial and both were adamant they did not consent to the sexual acts.

The woman who was 19 at the time admitted to having kissed Rittinger in his bed, but said she told him she wanted to go to sleep.

She said he then forcefully rolled her on top of him and began touching her genitals.

She described a wrestling-like struggle on Rittinger’s bed that ended with her escaping to the living room, where she eventually went to sleep on a futon.

The woman who was 18 at the time said she awoke to find

Rittinger having sex with her.

She said he then stopped, left the room and returned a few minutes later and began having sex with her again.

According to the woman, Rittinger only stopped when her friend called to say he was outside to pick her up.

Taking the stand in his own defence, Rittinger admitted he had sexual interactions with both women, but maintained both were with consent.

He said the first woman performed oral sex on him for a brief time before stopping suddenly.

He said he was confused and

left the room, eventually asking the second woman if there was room for him to get into bed with her.

Rittinger said she replied yes, and said they began to make out, eventually engaging in sexual intercourse.

“We were both taking part in the activity,” he said. “We were both touching each other.”

Court has heard Rittinger was a TRU student at the time. He was a member of the school’s varsity golf team until it was disbanded prior to the 2014-2015 school year.

The trial is scheduled to end on Friday.

Lower student loan interest rates in budget CAM FORTEMS STAFF REPORTER cam@kamloopsthisweek.com

Students still in school and those already graduated will pay less in loan repayments with a change announced in Tuesday’s provincial budget.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong said the B.C. Liberal government will lower interest rates from today’s prime plus 2.5 per cent to straight prime.

“So, for example, with prime at 2.7 per cent right now, those in repayment would have to pay 5.2 per cent today,” de Jong told the legislature. “After August 1, they will just pay that prime amount.”

union has long pushed for reform of the loan system, most recently advocating for a needs-based grant system.

Vice-president external Amber Storvold said the measure will help those graduating with student debt.

“We’re very happy to see a reduction in the interest rate. It’s a good step in making post-secondary education more affordable,” she said.

While the rate that students pay once they are out of school will fall by half with the measure, federal student loans remain in the five per cent range.

Storvold noted the announcement puts B.C. in line with many other provinces.

The province currently has the

highest rates in Canada.

The average debt for students who carry a loan in Canada is about $25,000 a year.

Doug Thode, a insolvency trustee in Kamloops, acknowledged the rate cut will help those with debt, noting it would reduce payments on $10,000 by about $250 a year, for example.

He said through his 27 years in assisting those in dire financial trouble, he has noticed increasingly higher levels of student debt. Unlike many other forms of debt, however, student loan debt is generally not dischargeable until a student is out of school for at least seven years.

“For people who come see me, it doesn’t matter if their student debt is $140 a month

or $150. They can’t pay it anyway.”

Thode also said he’s seeing a trend of people coming through his door who have obtained student loans to attend private colleges. Even if they find a job, it’s often at no higher a wage than they were making before they went to school.

“The biggest issue is people are led astray at the start,” he said.

De Jong estimated the measure will cost the provincial treasury about $17 million a year.

While the announcement is an improvement for B.C. students, the new rate pales compared to Newfoundland and Manitoba, where the provinces do not charge any interest.

‘GLUE GUY’ TOLEDO REACHES 1,500 WHL FACEOFF GAME #63

odd McLellan called him glue, essential to the makeup of a Swift Current Broncos team mired in the Graham James sexual-assault tragedy that first came to light in the

mid-1990s.

McLellan was speaking about Colin Robinson, then a young, fledgling WHL trainer, now a grizzled veteran with the Kamloops Blazers.

“We had gone through a lot in Swift Current throughout those years and there was a lot of stress on a lot of players, the organization and even the community,” said McLellan, then head coach of the Broncos, now Edmonton Oilers’ bench boss. “He always had a way of lightening things up.

I thought it was a skillset he should use as much as he possibly could.”

McLellan encouraged Robinson to use his personality to convey perpetual positivity. That advice has brought Robinson through 1,499 WHL games and made him one of the most respected trainers in the league.

Standing in the Blazers’ dressing room, the interview had barely begun when the frog crept into Robinson’s throat.

“I’m an emotional guy,” he said, fighting back tears. “This isn’t on radio, thank God.” Robinson, who goes by Toledo (we’ll get to that later), was asked to reflect on his journey so far, which continues tonight with his 1,500th regular-season game.

The Blazers will square off against the Kelowna Rockets in an important B.C. Division showdown. Game time is 7 p.m. at Sandman Centre.

“Everybody wants to say winning is the best part, and that’s obviously a huge part of it, but the one thing that stands out the most is after you’ve had a player for a significant time and their parents come to you and say, ‘Thank you for raising my son.’ That makes an impact.”

Former Blazers’ defenceman Ryan Rehill recently sent Robinson a text that brought him to tears, thanking him for five years of service.

“Those are the things you can’t put a value on,” Robinson said.

“When you’re at a player’s wedding and they thank you and say that you’ve made an impact, that’s more than I could ask for.”

He is a certified athletic trainer with a diploma in massage therapy. He also has EMT, Red Cross and Sports First Responder training and is a registered home-care nurse.

He tapes ankles. He sharpens skates. He folds laundry. He bandages wounds.

But that’s not why players love Toledo.

“He’s a glue guy and he cares about the players,” McLellan said. “I think it’s one of the most important hires a team makes at any level.

“They’re around the players more than anybody. They’re confided in more than we even know as management and coaches.

“They have to be supportive, yet they have to have a dose of honesty serum in them, so the players hear it the way they need to hear it.

“They’re the hardest-working, mostunderpaid position in our game, yet they

probably have as big an influence on the game as anybody.”

Robinson is a counsellor, a therapist, a comedian, a mentor and a friend, an organizer of team-building events and pre-game rituals.

“A lot of that comes from Todd McLellan,” said Robinson, who nearly pursued a career in theatre before going the hockey route. “He just said the guys have enough pressure on them and enough going on that you really need to try to be the most positive guy and make sure the rink is always a place to have fun and to be safe. I took that to heart.”

Twenty-plus years worth of exhausting road trips, on which the latest of nights and earliest of mornings are often reserved for trainers, don’t get any easier with age.

Robinson, 43, misses his family — wife Tracy, daughters Haylee and Lahney and son Ty — and said being away from home is the hardest part of the job.

“It’s something I just can’t be thankful enough for, great support from my family and all the teams I’ve been with,” he said.

“And the bonds with the players, they’re close.

He left the Broncos to join the Vancouver Giants in time for the 2001-2002 campaign and spent four seasons there before coming to Kamloops in 2005-2006.

Among his accomplishments are two trips to the World Junior Hockey Championship, including one as Canada’s head trainer in 2002.

He’s been to two WHL conference finals, one with the Blazers and one with the Broncos, but has never won a league championship.

“This might be the year,” he said. “That’s the thing that’s so unique about this job, the highs and the lows, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

“It’s a great league and it’s been a wonderful, wonderful experience.”

Oh, and as for the nickname, Toledo . . .

When the chant came, he knew it was showtime.

It echoed throughout the bus: “HEY-OH, TOLEDO! HEY-OH, TOLEDO!” Long in advance of the iPad era, well before movies were shown to lull hockey players to sleep, Robinson was the entertainment.

He would grab the mic and tell fictitious fables of a character dreamed into existence, an alter-ego forged, sculpted and perfected during long nights on the road.

“The guys would start chanting — “HEYOH, TOLEDO! — for me to tell them fabrications of being a heavyweight in the East Coast League, scoring eight goals a night and picking up a hot girl after,” Robinson said.

One day at the rink in 1995, for the first time outside of drama-bus hours, Broncos’ forward Brad Larsen called him Toledo.

The name stuck. So did Robinson.

With five wins in eight games against the 100 Mile House Wranglers, and points in six of those contests, the Kamloops Storm should be confident heading into Round 1 of the playoffs.

But the regular season headto-head record is not what’s giving Storm head coach Ed Patterson a good feeling about the best-of-seven Kootenay International Junior Hockey League series.

“All that gets thrown out the window in the playoffs,” Patterson said. “I like the direction our guys have come throughout the season, with all the ups and downs and adversity with all the injuries.

“We’ve seen a lot of mental strength and composure the whole season, which is going to help us out in the playoffs.”

Games 1 and 2 will be played in 100 Mile House tonight and tomorrow, respectively. Games 3 and 4 will be played at Memorial Arena on Monday and Tuesday, with puck-drop scheduled for 7:35 p.m. both nights.

Wranglers’ head coach Dale Hladun is not on Patterson’s Christmas list, but the Storm’s head coach respects what the

opposition’s bench boss has done in 100 Mile, which won the Western Canadian junior B championship last season after dumping Kimberley 4-1 in the KIJHL final.

“They compete hard, they’re physical and they bang for 60 minutes,” Patterson said. “They have one or two top lines that are pretty decent. If we take care of our own end and don’t get caught with our D watching, we’re in great shape.”

The Storm (23-17-1-6) began the 2016-2017 campaign with 18 rookies and endured a rash of injuries, but still managed to finish second in the Doug Birks Division, nine points behind the second-place Wranglers (27-123-5).

Kamloops caught the injury bug before the playoffs last season and was bounced in Round 1 by the Chase Heat, an early exit that still weighs on Patterson’s mind.

“We’ve done well, gotten to the final four out of five years, but never actually won the thing,” he said. “We collapse as a group because we haven’t had the right amount of adversity throughout the season.”

Tre Sales was among those hurt when his Storm were ousted in the first round last season, having broken his leg in Game 1 against Chase.

He’s healthy now, along with the rest of the Storm’s scoreby-committee group up front, outside of Nate Pelletier, who is out with mono, and Brett Mero, who is expected to miss a week or two.

Defenceman Garrett Ewert, the squad’s scoring leader with 42 points this season, will lead from the back, flanked by a healthy D-corps.

“We haven’t been this healthy since the third week of the season,” Patterson said, noting goaltender Jason Sandhu will get the nod between the pipes.

“Confidence is high. This year, if we can get a series or two under our belt, we could skyrocket.”

WolfPack to wrap regular season in Saskatoon With a playoff spot secured, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women’s volleyball team is gearing up to head to Saskatoon for its final Canada West regular-season weekend.

The WolfPack (13-9) will square off against the 6-16 Saskatchewan Huskies, who have lost six straight matches.

“I think our group is excited to head into our final week of the regular season and fine tune some things we need to work on before the playoffs,” TRU head coach Chad Grimm said.

TRU split a pair of matches with the UBC Okanagan Heat of Kelowna last week, falling 3-1 at the Tournament Capital Centre on Thursday before winning 3-1 in Kelowna on Saturday.

The WolfPack and Heat have matching records and sit tied for fifth in the conference.

“In my opinion, our match Saturday saw us come up with our best maintained level of intensity and focus of the year,” Grimm said.

“We made a couple of subtle changes to how we were going to attack against UBCO and the girls did a good job of sticking to the game plan.

Saskatchewan should not be overlooked.

“We have been preaching all year that we need to get better each time out and focus on our jobs in the moment,” Grimm said.

“I definitely see progress in that area. We can still put some pressure on UBCO in the battle for fifth if we have a good weekend in Saskatchewan. We obviously want to be playing well heading into the post-season, so that should be motivation enough to be ready to go.”

The 2-20 WolfPack men’s volleyball team will wrap its season with two matches against the Huskies this weekend.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity for us to close out the season on a positive note,” TRU interim coach Mike Hawkins said.

RESIDENCE BROKEN INTO On February 20th a residence was broken into on Glenwood road and a number of items were taken. The owners were away at the time but they had a neighbour checking on the house daily.

The suspect forced open a rear sliding door, then had full access to the entire house. The suspect did take some jewelry and a very small amount of cash. The Kamloops RCMP Forensic unit will be very interested in what was left behind.

The owners did the right thing in advising the neighbour that they would be away. This could have prevented this suspect from coming back knowing the home was being watched. If you see something suspicious, contact the Police right away, they will attend to determine what the problem is.

The male is described as Caucasian, late 40’s, his hair has a very distinctive look with the hair coming to a sharp point in the front and a receding hair line. He was also wearing a long dark coat and may be similar to the western style “Duster Coats”.

The Blue Jays’ catcher, who was born in Toronto but raised in Montreal, has trained alongside Longueuil, Que., native Benoit Huot for two straight off-seasons at the Institut National du Sport du Quebec (INS).

“I never really practised swimming in my life, I was never really that interested in it, but as I got older, my body was changing and I felt I needed to do some different things to stay in shape,’’ the 34-year-old Martin said on Tuesday at the Blue Jays’ spring training facility.

“I just wanted to find ways to balance out my body a little bit better and turns out Ben is a really good coach — in one session I got a lot better with just a couple techniques he showed me. And he’s a tremendous competitor.’’

Huot, who was born with a disability in his right leg commonly known as club foot, won three gold medals in his first Paralympic Games in Sydney in 2000 and followed that up with five more in Athens in 2004. He has a total of 20 Paralympic medals, including a bronze from the Rio Games last summer.

Martin first met Huot years ago through a mutual friend. The two had spoken about training together in the pool, but Martin didn’t take Huot up on his offer until last year when Huot took him to INS Quebec for the first time.

Martin said he was amazed at the Montreal facility, which helps develop a number of

“That guy [Hamelin] is a stud, too,’’ Martin said while pulling up a photo on his Instagram of the three athletes posing together in the INS weight room.

“Charles just happened to be there one day. And Ben knows everybody, he’s the nicest guy in the world, so he introduced us. I met him and I was like ‘hey, you’re pretty cool, you won three gold medals, can I take a picture?’

And he was like ‘hey you’re pretty cool too.’’’

Martin played 137 games last season — and nine more in the playoffs — batting .231 with 20 homers and 74 RBIs while dealing with a left knee issue for most of the year.

He underwent arthroscopic surgery in November to remove floating torn cartilage from the knee, a procedure he said he’s fully recovered from now.

While Martin’s knee had “mostly healed’’ by the time he got in

the pool with Huot, he did say that swimming helped in his rehab process and he worked with his physiotherapist to come up with a workout plan he could do underwater.

“I’d start with very easy stuff and I would do them and get back to (my physiotherapist) and tell him it felt good or it felt worse and we’d work together from there,’’ Martin said.

“We got more aggressive each time and the next thing you know the knee just started to feel awesome.’’

The exercises, which are listed on a chart Martin still keeps in his locker, consisted mostly of different types of squats sandwiched between a warmup and cooldown of walking in waist-deep water.

Martin said it was easy to train and do his pool-based rehab while surrounded by Olympic-grade athletes.

“In that environment, they’re all really dedicated to what they do so we all have that in common,’’ he said.

“We all take care of our bodies, we all want to perform. It’s just really easy to get along with people when you share those kinds of similarities.’’

WALTHAM, Mass. — The Boston Celtics went into yesterday’s trade deadline armed with the assets needed to make a major deal and put pressure on the Eastern Conference favourite Cleveland Cavaliers.

But any potential deal will have to wait until another day.

For the second straight year, Boston’s roster will go unchanged heading into the second half of the season, despite what president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said were tempting discussions with several teams.

“We had a lot of conversations, there’s things that we could do to improve our team, but nothing that is good enough to do,’’ Ainge said.

Ainge entered the day in an enviable position thanks to a roster loaded with young talent and two first-round draft picks he holds from Brooklyn over the next two drafts.

Boston has the right to swap first-round picks with the Nets this summer. Brooklyn currently has the worst record in the NBA. If it remains there, that pick would hold the highest odds of becoming No. 1 overall in the draft lottery.

While he wouldn’t discuss specifics of what deals were on the table, Ainge said the potential of having the top draft pick this summer played a role in discussions with teams yesterday.

“We’re trying to upgrade our team. But it is a delicate balance of short term goals and long term goals,’’ he said. “Obviously both are important.’’

All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas, who set the Twitter world and

“I don’t think that when you’re in a position where you’re playing at a pretty good level that you should anticipate much change,’’ Stevens said after his team practised early yesterday afternoon. “At the end of the day I think that my job is try to focus on the 15 guys that are here.’’

He has yet to see what a fully healthy group can truly do.

Boston’s starting lineup of Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley, Al Horford, Jae Crowder and Amir Johnson has played in just 21 of 57 games this season. They are 16-5 in those games, but will begin the second half Friday in Toronto still not injuryfree.

“We won’t put a ceiling on this team, but we haven’t seen the best of this team,’’ Ainge said.

Obituaries & In Memoriam William Christopher Watters January 2, 1963 - February 16, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Christopher Watters.

Chris is survived by his wife Susan Watters, his sister Dawn and her daughter Marysha, all his step-children and grandchildren and of course his many other relatives and friends.

Chris was born in Glendale, California. He lived in Burbank, California until the age of 9 and then moved to the San Fernando Valley. His mother had a small cottage on the beach in Mexico that he would visit a few times over the summer and he loved the ocean and the times spent there with his family.

Chris was a concrete finisher by trade and took great pride in what he did. As a child he was very inquisitive and loved to do things with his hands. He would often take things apart just to put them back together again.

Chris loved music, and it was at a music festival where he met the love of his life Susan. They were together for over ten years and still in love to the end.

A Funeral Service will be held on February 25, 2017 at 1:00 pm in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, 285 Fortune Drive with Pastor Darrell Hellquist officiating.

A potluck and gathering will be held after the service at 253 Ferry Rd, in McLure.

Harriet Engberg (nee Jackson) Harriet (nee Jackson) Engberg was born on February 12, 1920 in Vancouver, BC and passed away peacefully on February 10, 2017 surrounded by her loving family and her caring staff from Kamloops Seniors Village which had been her home for almost two years.

Harriet was many good things in a very small package, Wonderful wife to Roy for 67 years (predeceased in 2008), Mother to her three daughters, Grandma to her six grandchildren and GG to two great-grandsons.

Mum was a great homemaker and so loved her garden, sewing and knitting. She was a wonderful cook as well.

Mum was a Lifetime Member of Native Daughters of BC and so very proud of being a “BC Girl”.

Mum was a very devoted fan of the Canucks and she referred to them as “Her Boys”, as she had none of her own.

Dad and Mum had many happy family years at Cluculz Lake in Prince George. After leaving Prince George they resided in Kelowna for 27 years watching two of their youngest grandchildren grow up there, before moving to Kamloops. In retirement years, they together did much travelling both here and abroad, and also made many endearing friends in their motorhome travels as well.

Mum’s beautiful smile and her love for her family will be missed but never forgotten as she leaves behind her daughters Margaret (Ken) Weaver, Bev (Murray) McCurdy in Kamloops, Lynn (Len) Vigar in Kelowna, her grandchildren Brenda (Kevin) Pattinson, Janine McCurdy, Brent (Rosanna) Weaver, Maureen McCurdy, Neal (Laura) Vigar, Cathy Vigar (Sean Hubbard), great-grandsons Vann Weaver and Stirling Vigar, her sister Jean Bruno, (predeceased by sister Beth Clare) and nieces and nephews.

Our family extends heartfelt thanks and love to the caregivers who became Mum’s extended family at Kamloops Seniors Village and she so loved them all. Thanks also to Dr. John Reid and Dr. Wynn for the care given to Mum. No service was Mum’s wishes. Mum will be interred with Dad in Kelowna at a later date.

First Memorial Funeral Service Anna Maria Teresa Grandia Anna Maria Teresa Grandia, 31, died on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC. She sustained traumatic injuries after being struck by an out of control vehicle while helping at the scene of another accident on Highway one near Hope, BC on February 5th, 2017. It was a direct result of these injuries that Anna did succumb.

She did not set out that terrible day to be a hero or a victim, she was just stepping out to help a fellow traveller.

She was born on September 23, 1985 in Vancouver, BC, the beautiful daughter of Antonio and Gail Coriale.

Anna grew up in the community of Rayleigh in Kamloops, graduating from NorKam Secondary School with the Class of 2003. She went on to Thompson Rivers University for a year of post-secondary studies.

On August 5, 2005 she married Matthew Grandia, also from Kamloops. Soon after, they moved to Calgary so Anna could attend the University of Calgary where she attained her BA with a Major in dance.

Wanting to go from being “shot by a jealous young husband”, it was probably the disappointment of learning that hospitals were not licensed.

His greatest achievements were discovering “where the bear s***in the buckwheat”, finding the Sasquatch, and above all, raising his loving family. Continuing his legacy of honour and integrity are his immediate surviving family, Trevor (Missy) Lusk, Alana (Todd) Lorenz, Leigh-Ann (Joe) Hooley, & grandchildren Sheldon, Spencer, Allie, Rachel, Cayden and Grace.

There’s a party in heaven now as Trev Sr. has been reunited with his son Dennis, wife Shirley, sister, brothers, parents, and friends for which he was always willing to share a beer and a story. His authenticity, sharp wit, sage advice, and extraordinary love for his family will never be forgotten.

There will be no funeral at his request, but rather a Celebration of Life (kegger) in Kamloops tentatively set for May 13, 2017 to honour a larger than life personality and an all-around great man.

Friends wishing to make a memorial donation may opt to support the Kamloops Hospice Association in his honour.

You could not have had a better sister or friend than Anna; she was always up for a new adventure; climbing mountains, zip-lining, trying her hand at painting.

She loved to travel; Scotland, Italy, Greece, Barbados, Cuba, Maui, California and always enjoyed relaxing on a good beach.

She will forever be missed by all those she left behind.

Her husband Matthew Grandia and her two beautiful children, Nico and Skyla, her parents Tony and Gail Coriale, her siblings who adored her Lisa Coriale, Laura Coriale and Andrew Coriale, neices and nephews Milla, Kris, Leo and Carmen, Auntie Sheila and Uncle Byron, her in-laws the Grandia’s, the Bates’ and the Willms’ families.

Anna was preceded in death by her brother Dome (Nico) and her Grandparents Barbara and Stanley Middleton and her grandfather Domenico Coriale.

Returning to Kamloops, the city she loved, Anna worked alongside her sister Laura at Sista’s Love to Dance Studio. Anna also taught for The City of Kamloops’ dance program and The Dance Academy at Brock Middle School. Anna was much loved and respected by all of her students and will be sadly missed.

A “Celebration of Anna” will be held on Saturday, March 4th, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Summit Drive Church, 1975 Summit Drive, Kamloops with Pastor Harry Bicknel and Pastor Dave Fields officiating.

Anna will be remembered dearly as a loving, kindhearted, adoring Mom who cherished her children and as a devoted wife.

At this time the Family would like to thank everyone who stopped to help on that fateful day, the strangers, the police, the paramedics, the Doctor and the extended family who took care of her children. Finally, to the Royal Columbian Trauma/ICU teams, whose efforts to save Anna were utterly valiant- you are all true champions.

Anna was a day brightener with that smile and those eyes, a little girl who grew up to be a genuine friend.

A daughter who was a true “pearl of great price” to her parents.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Gary Apted It is with great sadness and respect we say “so long” to a one of a kind gentleman.

Donald (“Papa”) passed away peacefully with his family by his side in the early morning of February 20, 2017.

He will be lovingly remembered by his loving wife, brothers, children, extended family and friends and will be remembered as our village barber for many years.

Anyone that knew Gary knew he loved golf and made a point of getting out weekly. He had a passion for life and for playing the drums and he cherished the strong bond he had with all his musician buddies.

Always received with a smile by his friends, Gary could make the best of any circumstance, lighting the mood with ease. Gary was a treat to all that knew him. He will be sadly missed.

A donation to the Lung Association of Canada would be what Gary wants us all to do.

On February 20th, 2017 in the early morning, Gary Apted of Chase, BC passed away.

Gary was quick to offer you a smile and a few kind words because it was the fellowship of his community members he cherished. We would all have our spirits bolstered by this one of a kind man when you were in his barber’s chair. He had a great ability to make you feel good about yourself and to look sharp. As a barber, Gary was a real Man’s man, sporting his famous “Elvis” haircut and if you were lucky enough, you’d catch him humming a tune from the legend himself.

Alma Joyce Jaeger (nee Allen) of Kamloops, BC passed away suddenly at Royal Inland Hospital on February 20, 2017.

She was 89 years of age.

Born on February 23, 1927 in Lestock, Saskatchewan, Alma is survived by her son Jim (Gail) Clarke of Westwold, BC and Bob (Judi) Clarke of Kamloops and by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alma loved to garden and to make crafts, especially wooden bowls. She’ll be remembered as always being positive and cheerful.

om Cochrane remembers playing hooky from high school so he could be at the front of the line to buy tickets to a Bruce Cockburn concert.

The iconic Canadian musician was performing at the Riverview in Winnipeg at the time and

That was a quarter-century ago — and Cochrane is reissuing it in a remastered edition that includes an unreleased original demo of the precursor to the song, Love Is A Highway, and a 1992 concert performance that also had songs from his previous band, Red Rider.

Get Smart with School of Arts In new production, students recreate slapstick espionage based on Mel Brooks’ 1960s hit television series JESSICA WALLACE

A

few rows of chairs is all it takes to prepare a classroom for an audience.

Drama teacher Katrina Melan called the Kamloops School of the Arts blackbox theatre — which can seat about 100 people — one of the best in School District 73.

“A blackbox theatre is actually what they use at TRU as well,” she said.

“The idea is that all of these walls can move at any point, so we can change where the audience is and where the lighting is, etc.”

When KTW visited, Grade 8 and Grade 9 theatre students were rehearsing their upcoming production Get Smart.

The play was written

by Christopher Sergel and is based on the television series by Mel Brooks. The comedy pokes fun at secret agent espionage.

The show was later followed by movies, most recently starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway.

Asked whether a few of the young cast members had heard of the comedy that first aired in the 1960s, Lucy Matchim said she’s seen the movie. No, not the reboot, she insisted.

Get Smart wasn’t necessarily chosen for its story, but rather to ensure all 19 students had an acting role.

“Because they are all drama majors, it is my belief that they should all, at least, have a small chance on the stage because the reason they have chosen drama is because they want to act,” Melan said.

In pursuing a drama major, students are immersed in theatre every other day yearround. Students are also responsible for stage management, set building and sound design.

“If they’ve been here since elementary

school, they’ve had arts integrated into everything, so they’d be very used to performing,” Melan said.

“So they come in here pretty skilled already with what they can do.”

Scripts were handed out before Christmas and the class got to work in January.

Grade 9 student Nolan Grover, who plays professor Dante in Get Smart, said he chose a drama major following the success of another school play.

Johnny Dunn recently received accolades after Trinity College London came to judge the students as part of its performingarts examinations.

dents receiving the college’s North American Exhibition Award for excellence.

“I’m really passionate about this now,” Grover said.

“That was a real confidence booster.”

Grade 9 student Ivan Vutev, who plays the lead Maxwell Smart, has performed outside of the classroom. He has acted in three Laughing Stock Theatre Society pantos: Aladdin, Snow White and Treasure Island.

“I come from a very musical family,” he said. “When I first started music, it fed into choir. Choir fed into musical theatre and musical theatre sort of fed into drama.”

als are going, the students admitted some students have yet to memorize their lines.

The show runs from March 14 to March 16.

“We feel like the pressure’s going to get us there,” Melan said.

Vutev, who is in about 90 per cent of the scenes in the hour-and45-minute production, is confident it will all come together.

“This is mostly educational,” he said.

Tickets are $5 and can be picked up from the school office, located in the former JP campus at 1390 Ninth Ave. The show — two evening and one morning — is open to the public.

He’s also heading on the road to share in the celebration of the album, with a stop in Kamloops on March 4 at Sandman Centre.

It kicked off in Cranbrook on Feb. 24 and wraps up on Aug. 19 in Saskatoon.

Cochrane said returning to the album led to some new discoveries, nuances in the lyrics, different interpretations, particularly as he’s been rehearsing for the tour with Red Rider.

“They weren’t on this record,” he said, “so they’ve brought some new interpretations to it.”

The concert won’t be restricted to Mad Mad World, however.

There will be Red Rider songs on the set list — including some that have renewed meaning for Cochrane given the world we live in now.

Lunatic Fringe, for example, “is an anti-racist song,” he said, “something that specifically speaks out about racism.

“You know, people are smug in Canada and in the U.S. They think freedom is an entitlement but it isn’t.

You have to protect it.”

John Lennon had an influence on Cochrane as he wrote Lunatic Fringe, he said, both musically and personally.

said there are some guitar licks in the song that derive from Lennon’s music.

And then there’s the reality that, as Cochrane and the band gathered in the studio on Dec. 8, 1980 to record a demo of the song, word came to them the former Beatle had been killed.

“We talked about doing it,” Cochrane said of the goal that night, “and I thought we had to. He was a guy who wore his heart on his sleeve and we needed to do that, too.”

He never expected the song to become the hit it was, the most popular Cochrane song before he recorded Highway.

The word is connected to him in another way, as well; a 3220-kilometre stretch of Provincial Road 391 near his hometown of Lynn Lake in Manitoba is now known as Tom Cochrane’s Life Is A Highway.

Cochrane’s eager to hit the highway again, sharing his music with fans and the stage with musicians he loves to work with, including Ken Greer and Jeff Jones, along with Bill Bell and Davide Direnzo.

He promised a hitfilled, full-on concert that will have a few surprises.

“It will be a great show. I just hope Kamloops doesn’t have a curfew.”

Scholarship concert returns March 2 in memory of Dickens Proceeds from event fund $8,000 bursary to music student The Kamloops Community Band presents the Richard Dickens Memorial Scholarship Concert on March 2 at Southwest Community Church, 700 Hugh Allan Dr. The band was founded by Dickens in 2001 to provide a place for young people,

teachers, retirees and other community members to play their instruments.

Dickens died in 2009 and proceeds from this event will go toward the scholarship named for him, which provides $2,000 a year for four years to a student who has shown exemplary

aptitude and achievement in music and is continuing in full-time music studies at the post-secondary level.

Create picture-perfect paintings of local scenery

U

sing photography for an aid in painting is something I have been doing for years. It is a good way to develop images and connections to the world.

The above acrylic painting was inspired by a photograph I took of a tree just above Valleyview, on the way to Juniper. Iconic Peter and Paul mountains sing in the background.

I have broken down the creation of this piece into six steps. Acrylic paint colours used are cyan blue, magenta, cadmium yellow, black and white. I paint on a 16 by 20 canvas with small, medium and large brushes.

In my classes, I call them papa, momma and baby brushes.

1. Using baby brush, sketch in the background using thinnedout black paint.

If you make mistakes, paint over them with white and start over.

Sometimes I will develop an entire painting with black and white before I use any colour.

That way, you get a firm handle on how you want the composition of the painting to look without wasting time or paint.

2. Using papa brush, paint in the sky using white and a smidge of cyan blue. Add clouds with a hint of magenta and white, creating warm tones. Then, add a splash of warm tones with a couple of loose brush strokes of yellow and white.

3. Still using papa brush, take that warm yellow mixture used in the sky and block in the foreground.

Don’t bother put-

ting any detail. Leave the grass until the end.

I made the part of the foreground that recedes a bit lighter by adding white.

4. Switching to mama brush, use black and white to mix a light grey tone. You will use this grey to soften the background colours of Peter and Paul.

Using blue and grey, block in all of the areas of the mountains that are in shadow.

Clean the brush.

Mix the grey tone with magenta and fill in the warm tones of the mountains. Using yellow and white, highlight areas of the mountains you want to stand out.

If the paint is still wet, blend the colours, but be careful not to over work them.

5. Carry some of the colours you used in the mountains into the foreground. The technique is called carrying the colour through.

We will paint over most of it, but some of it will show through and will create a sense of depth in the painting.

6. Time to use the baby brush. Mix black with some water and, using the tip of the brush, paint in the tree trunk.

Add branches.

Each branch you paint should get smaller and smaller until you are at the top of the tree. With the yellow and white mixture, add highlights to the top branches of the tree.

7. Still using your baby brush, paint in blades of long grass into the foreground.

Try not to create pattern, instead, paint the grass in clumps so they look more natural. You can also use thinned down black if the grass looks like it needs some dark areas.

Look at your painting. This part is important. If there is anything that bothers you, now is the time to fix it.

Dandelion Gala helps to make wishes come true The Kamloops Child Development Centre (KCDC) will host its second annual Dandelion Gala on Saturday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m. at The Dunes at Kamloops Golf Course in Westsyde.

The event will benefit the non-profit early childhood education centre, with funds going to support the creation of its naturebased Forest Playground.

The playground will include technologies that will give kids at the centre a greater

quality of independence.

The evening will begin with an open bar cocktail reception where guests will have a chance to mingle, bid on the silent auction and use the photo booth to express themselves and create some memories.

The cocktail reception will be followed by dinner, a live auction and an evening of dancing to the sounds emitted by Stan Bailly DJ Services.

Special guests at the Dandelion Gala will be Tangie Genshorek and

Cam MacQuarrie of Scaled Space Design.

Their company has created a design overview of the new Forest Playground space.

“Scaled Space Studio is excited to work with the dynamic people at KCDC to create a forest playground,” MacQuarrie said. “The natural design includes a tree house and water feature inspired by our local surroundings.”

There is a worldwide movement to increase children’s experiences with nature, something with

which KCDC education director Helen Blair is familiar.

“Science has shown that when we connect with nature, we’re smarter, healthier and even more generous,” Blaie said. “Our Forest Playground is a dream come true for our centre. It’s the space where our vision becomes a reality.”

In keeping with its history and dedication to inclusivity, the children at the Kamloops Child Development Centre include typical children and those with special needs, behaviours and traumas.

The KCDC provides a naturebased network of support and care for children at all stages of development.

Regional district survey says: La La Land betting favourite Fill it out and you could win The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is conducting a survey to get feedback from residents about their garbage and recycling services and what the would like to see in the future.

The survey is part of the regional solid waste management plan review process now underway.

The survey, which is open to all residents of the TNRD and its member municipalities, features a chance for anyone who fills it out

to be entered into a draw to win one of two prizes — a $100 VISA card or a home composting kit.

A link to the online survey can be found online at tnrd.ca and physical copies are available at TNRD libraries, member municipalities’ offices and at regional district waste sites.

The survey closes on Tuesday, Feb. 28, and winners are expected to be announced and contacted in mid-March.

B.C. residents who like to bet on the various winners while watching the Oscars can do so legally.

The B.C. Lottery Corporation’s playnow.com website offers an array of wagers connected to the 89th Academy Awards, which will take place on Sunday night.

With more than 26 bets and an Oscars Pool, bettors can wager on dozens of categories, from Best Picture to Best Makeup to Best Hairstyling.

The toxic spirituality of temptation

E

ven before my next scheduled Faith column appears, the month of Lent will be upon us, reminding the faithful of the purpose of weaning ourselves away from worldly temptations.

Hopefully, the victory aspired would help believers, not just for this season, but throughout the year ahead.

As far back as 2,000 years ago, James, the halfbrother of Jesus, reminded the persecuted and the scattered Christians of the godly privilege of believers undergoing temptations with these words: “Blessed (or, happy) is the man that endures temptation” (James 1:12).

Temptation is one of the inescapable facts of life. It was in operation even in the life of the holy Son of God when he was on Earth.

It is a fact to be reck-

oned with in the life of every man or woman who seeks to serve the Lord.

As we read the record of the temptations of Jesus and if we try to explain them away only as allegories, we would do away the inspiration that leads people to victory by using the Word of God. It was not only during the 40 days in the wilderness that Jesus suffered being tempted of Satan.

There was at least one occasion when, discours-

ing with his disciples, he told them to be aware lest they fall into temptations.

It is not possible for any one of us to go far through life blind to the awful, insidious force of temptation.

There have been times in all of our lives when sometimes we felt that escape from temptations is almost unavoidable.

At Jesus’ baptism, after the Spirit of God had descended upon him, he was driven into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Again, as he faced Jerusalem for the last time, who could realize the awful agony as he cried out to one of his own beloved disciples who tried to dissuade him from all that the cross meant to him?

Then, at Gethsemane, in that awful paroxysm of the fury of the evil one, there was the awful experience of pain and loneliness of Jesus.

At times we too face our version of Gethsemane. Let us remember then that we shall also have the angels of God standing by to support and strengthen us.

We would not feel alone then.

Sometimes there is a danger that we think of Christian life far too much in terms of some catchy hymns. Whereas it is a contest in which we should feel that we are in a real battle and cannot afford to let our guards fall.

It was not for the purpose of reclining on couches of scented rose petals that we were bidden to take on “the whole armour of God.” No matter how fierce, how overwhelming the forces that are arrayed against us, they are not greater than the forces that lead us on to victories.

Right into the very heat of the furnace there

stands besides us, One like unto the Son of God and says, “I, too, have felt the scorching flames. I know what it means. I, too, have suffered being tempted, yet I did not sin.”

Let us blot out forever from our mind the thought that because Jesus was God, therefore in some mysterious way temptations did not have the same power as they have for us.

It means that Jesus, when he was only a boy, was tempted just as we were when we were boys.

Then, as he grew up to be a young man, those temptations that attack us attacked him too.

But here is the glory of it for us to learn — he came through victorious, without sinning.

So, to every child of God we can say: Take these words for strength, consolation, and encouragement — the words of power — and just hold on to them in the hours

of temptation. They are the words of God. And not only he suffers with us, he is able also to succor them that are tempted. That is the crux of the whole thing for us.

He overcame. His power is available for us if we want to overcome.

What does it all mean?

First of all, it is true that we are being tempted more than ever before these days. The devil would not easily part with his slaves, even though the redemption money has been paid by Jesus.

Also, before we gave our life to Christ, we were drifting. We were going easily down the stream and were not conscious of the terrific force of the current that held us in its grip.

Now we have begun to pull against the stream and are realizing how strong the current is.

We cannot drift against the stream.

But, perhaps this is the most encouraging fact of all that God has allowed us to go into the wilderness to be tempted because He knows we are going to win.

Again, listen to the Word of God: “When he is tried, he shall receive a crown of life.”

That crown is promised to the person who is tried and tested and who triumphs.

Here is then the promise of victory: “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able.

“But with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”

That means every temptation carries with it its own way of escape.
