GOODNIGHT, HALF-MOON

It appears as though someone has stolen half the moon in this stunning photo captured by KTW photographer Allen Douglas. Earth’s only natural satellite will phase into a new moon (meaning it will not be visible) on Feb. 26, followed by a full moon on March 12.

Value Village on way to Sahali Mall? Value Village is expected to relocate to the former Target location in Sahali Mall on Aug. 29. Coun. Denis Walsh said staff at the Seymour Street store gave him the summer date for the mall opening. The move would leave the downtown store and the two parking lots bookending it vacant and

create a huge development potential, said Gay Pooler, general manager of Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association. Value Village is expected to occupy about two-thirds of the former Target space. Value Village’s parent company, Savers, had not responded to an interview request as of KTW press deadline yesterday.

Specifications on the Value Village corporate site under real estate spell out site requirements for the stores of 22,000 to 28,000 square feet at a free-standing location with on-site donation capabilities with a drive-thru or drive-up, as well as loading docks, being on a fronting street and near a retail shopping area.

The former fire chief of Barriere who resigned suddenly last year in the midst of a child-pornography investigation will plead guilty. A lawyer representing Al Kirkwood said as much on Monday in scheduling the 62-year-old’s sentencing for a date next month. Kirkwood, who also served as the publisher of the North Thompson Star Journal and Clearwater Times newspapers, is facing one count each of importing or distributing child pornography and possession of child pornography. Kirkwood was arrested on Oct. 4 following a police search of his home and offices. In all, four search warrants were executed at four locations. He was later released on a promise to appear in court and has been out of custody since. According to court documents, Kirkwood is accused of importing child pornography in June 2016 and of possessing it on the date he was arrested.

Police have said the investigation into Kirkwood’s activities began in August after the RCMP received information from U.S. law enforcement officials. Mounties have said there is nothing to indicate any local children were “directly victimized by the accused.” Kirkwood resigned from his post as Barriere’s fire chief on Oct. 7 after more than two decades in the position. Black Press, which owns the newspapers he published, has said Kirkwood is no longer with the company. Sentencing is set to take place on May 8.
