A 56-year-old man has been charged with murder after a resident of an east Kamloops RV park was found dead on Saturday.

George Stephen Fraser is being held in custody facing one count of second-degree murder. He is expected to appear in Kamloops provincial court today.

RCMP Sgt. Darren Michels said emergency crews were called to the 9000-block of Dallas Drive, near the BC Wildlife Park, at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday for a report of a disturbance.

“Upon arrival, police located a male that was being held down by several witnesses and the male was subsequently taken into custody,” Michels said.

“Police then discovered the body of a deceased male who had succumbed to his injuries.”

A park resident who

asked to remain anonymous said she had been speaking with police.

“One of the residents was murdered last night,” she told KTW, adding that the slaying took place in a trailer.

On Sunday morning, investigators could be seen focusing on an area in the Kamloops RV Park, 9225 Dallas Dr., where two stalls were cordoned off by police tape.

The RV park’s shower and bathroom was also surrounded by tape.

Just before 1:30 p.m., three forensic investigators could be seen leaving a taped off travel trailer in the park.

Plainclothes detectives and uniformed officers also roamed the RV park, speaking to potential witnesses.

Michels said the death is being treated as a homicide. The name of the 26-year-old victim has not yet become public.

The investigation is ongoing.

Delay in hearing to see if police can keep Jeep longer Vehicle was seized as part of investigation into fatal hit-and-run TIM PETRUK STAFF REPORTER tim@kamloopsthisweek.com

It will be at least two more weeks before police will get in front of a judge to ask for more time to hold onto evidence in the case of a Kamloops teen who died following a hit-andrun crash in Aberdeen late last year.

Jennifer Gatey died on Nov. 4 while walking across Pacific Way behind her family’s Aberdeen home. The Grade 11 South Kamloops student was one day shy of her 17th birthday.

The vehicle that hit Gatey did not stop. Four days later, police seized a Jeep in relation to the investigation into the incident.

Earlier this month, a Kamloops RCMP constable told a provincial court judge police want more time to hold on to the Jeep and potentially other evidence. A lawyer representing the Jeep’s owner opposes the extension.

The United Way Thompson-NicolaCariboo took a big step forward last year in its three-year goal to raise $6.5 million.

At a campaign celebration on Thursday, about 125 people heard the fundraising drive hit $2.2 million last year, the second of the three-year plan. That amount brings

the total collected to $4.5 million.

Executive director Danalee Baker said she and her staff were a bit anxious about the 2016 drive, given layoffs in many sectors and “uncertainty in the resource sector.”

She credited the agency’s strategy of excellent customer and donor service and diversifying its revenue sources for helping it top the

$20-million mark.

Highland Valley Copper again had the top regional workplace campaign, raising $430,000.

Baker noted that came even though the mine’s workers and owners were bargaining a new collective agreement “but they put their differences aside and came together to do this.”

This year’s campaign theme is We Need A Hero — and it will be reflected

in this year’s RCMPsponsored Jail and Bail, with the local police being sent out to arrest “costumed villains” in the city.

It will be held in conjunction with a new event — a drive-through breakfast at Cascades Casino, which also hosted the campaign celebration — with proceeds raised going to programs that feed children, Baker said.

Some of the breakfast bags will have surprise

gifts inside, including WestJet tickets.

The breakfast is planned for May 5.

Baker also announced New Gold has committed $30,000 to the new community food centre hub at Mount Paul United Church.

It is now home to a variety of programs focused on nutrition, health, sustainability, social change and growing community capacity.

A unique real estate proposal slated for the South Shore has been scrapped and the property sold to another developer.

City realtor Eric Putoto confirmed the Ninth Avenue property, across from South Kamloops secondary school, has changed hands.

In August 2014, Vancouverbased LionRock Developments said it would offer 52 one- and two-bedroom condos ranging

from 500 to 840 square feet.

The developer was partnering with a Lower Mainland church and the development had a social housing aspect.

Along with the condos, Shiloh Place was to feature just under 2,000 square feet of church and community meeting space, including a daycare and coffee shop. The small units were targeted at empty nesters and firsttime buyers, with an entry price of $150,000.

“We had pre-sales,” said Putoto, who marketed the proj-

ect. “They just didn’t design a building they could do on a budget and make any money selling.”

The property has been sold to a local developer, who intends to offer a more traditional and lower-density project. Putoto said it will likely be in the range of 15 to 18 units and will not require a rezoning.

Shiloh Place was opposed by a number of residents in the area, where single-family homes built in the 1950s dominate the landscape.

Mother dies following crash

A respected city criminal defence lawyer died suddenly on Friday.

Ken Tessovitch practiced law in Kamloops beginning in the 1970s. He was skiing with family at Sun Peaks Resort when he collapsed from suspected heart failure.

Tessovitch was a generalist defence lawyer, something required at a regional courthouse. He defended everyone from those accused of murder to a recent case when he represented a man accused of strangling a cat. He was known for his booming voice and jovial nature and respected for his intellect and skills in the courtroom.

Defence lawyer Chris Thompson said he considered Tessovitch a mentor and a close friend.

“He’s the best lawyer I’ve ever seen,” Thompson said. “When I started, I’d see him winning all the time and I thought that’s how it worked — I thought you just went out and won everything.”

Thompson said he will miss Tessovitch both personally and as a colleague.

“He was larger than life and very kind,” he said. “He was a good guy — a very good guy.”

Lawyer Ken Sommerfeld said Tessovitch was a friend and colleague who will be missed at the courthouse. A cancer survivor, Tessovitch had been practising law part-time in the past five years.

“His willingness to assist, either by example or by instruction, was always there,” Sommerfeld said. “He

In recent years, Tessovitch had set up a de facto office in the library at the Kamloops courtKEN TESSOVITCH house. He could often be seen — and heard — counselling other lawyers.

Lawyer Carman Kane said he will miss Tessovitch’s presence at the Kamloops Law Courts.

“He would have comments of wisdom and collegial banter,” he said.

“He was a staple in the Kamloops courthouse. Ken was a loved figure in the Kamloops law community.”

One of Tessovitch’s final trials resulted in an acquittal in lateJanuary for a client who was facing multiple firearms charges.

“The judge found that the Crown failed to prove possession of the firearm,” he told KTW after the notguilty verdict was handed down.

Crown prosecutor Sarah Firestone said Tessovich will be missed by prosecutors as well as his defence colleagues.

“He’s been a vibrant member of the Kamloops legal community for a long time and he will definitely be missed,” she said.

Tessovitch was 69. He is survived by his wife Delda, daughters Suzanne and Tina and son Stephen. A memorial service is expected to take place on March 25.

A Kamloops woman has died from her injuries following a crash last week on the Coquihalla Highway.

Anna Grandia and her husband, Matthew, were pulled over on the highway helping at the scene of an accident when they were struck by a vehicle after another driver lost control.

In a statement released Friday by pastor David Fields, the family said Anna died on Thursday night.

Matthew remains in critical condition following the accident.

“With deeply saddened hearts, we regret to inform everyone that our dear, sweet Anna succumbed to her injuries and peacefully passed away late last night with her family by her side,” the family said on Friday.

“Thank you for all your continued support through thoughts and prayers for Matthew, their children and all their family and friends. At this time, we are optimistic that Matt will make a full recovery. The family respectfully asks for privacy during this difficult time.”

The children remained in the vehicle while the couple went outside to assist.

While they were moving debris, a car spun out of control, hitting

them both. A Go Fund Me campaign to raise money for the family was launched by Jenell Kornelson, who said Matthew and Anna were rushed to hospital in New Westminster.

“According to police, they did everything perfectly, including pulling their truck ahead of the accident and to the side of the

highway,” the family said in a statement last week.

Fields said the family is involved with the community at Summit Drive Church in Sahali and “much loved.”

Prosecutor Adrienne Murphy said Olson’s former spouse called police after he showed up outside her house.

He produced a knife with a six-inch blade and demanded money from her.

“They had formerly been in a relationship and weren’t anymore.”

Murphy said after Olson

demanded money, his former girlfriend threw $140 out the window of her car, asking if he was high on drugs.

Olson has previous convictions for robbery.

Judge Roy Dickie sentenced Olson to four months in jail along with 18 months of probation. He was given two months credit for time already served in jail.

Four-year sentence for grandfather who sexually assaulted girl TIM PETRUK

A grandfather will spend the next four years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting his daughter in the 1980s.

The 67-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the complainant, was released from jail last summer after serving 15 months for molesting his granddaughter — the young daughter of his original victim.

Court heard the offences against his daughter occurred in Alberta between 1986 and 1990, when the girl was between 10 and 14 years old.

The attacker and the girl’s mother had recently separated when the assaults began.

The victim, who has since moved to B.C.’s Interior, told investigators she was sexually

assaulted each time she visited her father — every other weekend and for extended periods on holidays.

Now 40, the victim only came forward after her daughter made allegations against her grandfather.

He pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting his granddaughter in Salmon Arm in December 2014.

The offender told a psychiatrist he looks forward to taking sex-offender counselling in prison.

In addition to a four-year prison sentence handed down

by Salmon Arm provincial court Judge Dennis Morgan, the offender has also been ordered to submit a sample of his DNA to a national criminal database and register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

In addition, he is also prohibited from going to any parks, swimming pools or schools for life.

MORE AID WELCOME ON OPIOIDS

T

he provincial government announced a boost in funding this week for one of the organizations trying to aid addicts.

Health Minister Terry Lake announced $5 million of extra funding for the BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) and an additional $1.9 million for ongoing operations funding.

It’s that last that will be key going forward.

The BCCSU has developed new clinical treatment guidelines for opioid addicts, to go into effect later this spring. The use of opioids — heroin and related prescription drugs — has been the gateway for drug dealers to mix fentanyl and carfentanil into their product. Even tiny doses of fentanyl can prove fatal, and hundreds of addicts and casual drug users have died in the last year in B.C. The BCCSU does the high-level work, academic work that helps support and train the medical professionals who combat drug addiction on a daily basis.

The province has also expanded access to naloxone, which can save people in an overdose, and expanded access to addiction supports.

But, as always, there is more that could be done. Drug treatment needs to be widely expanded. Naloxone can save lives — but it does little to get people clear of the tainted heroin that almost killed them.

As usual with a provincial government in the run-up to an election, the Liberals are flinging money at multiple targets. Also as usual, they prefer large, empty structures — bridges and highways — to ones that will require staff, like hospitals and clinics.

Unfortunately, there’s likely no way out of B.C.’s addiction crisis without spending some money on hiring more doctors, nurses, counsellors, and other professionals to staff the front lines.

Election budget sets the stage

T

he B.C. legislature has resumed, with a pre-election budget to be revealed on Feb. 21.

This throne speech and budget are basically campaign events, the platform of a party looking to reach the dynasty level with five majority governments in a row.

Here’s a preview of some of the issues that will stoke the sound and fury in the weeks ahead.

• Education: The B.C. Teachers’ Federation has issued its typically modest demands in the wake of the Supreme Court of Canada’s casual dismissal of the BC Liberal effort to rein in public sector unions.

The BCTF wants $300 million a year more to restore the utopian public school conditions that allegedly existed before 2001.

And that’s not all. They want private schools de-funded, to solidify their monopoly over education and slow the exodus of parents who don’t want their kids run through a far-left indoctrination program.

I must say things have been calmer since Glen Hansman took over as BCTF president.

Unlike many of his predecessors, Hansman seems to understand his main job is leading a Canadian trade union, not reshaping global society by issuing manifestos and marching in anti-Trump rallies.

• Health care: Premier Christy Clark has started the rhetoric about “cuts” to federal health transfers. This is one of those “alternative facts” that we often hear from the NDP, which habitu-

The evil Stephen Harper “cut” that Justin Trudeau decided to keep is that instead of increasing six per cent every year, health transfers will go up three or four per cent.

This is to force provinces to move past the post-war acute care hospital model and into home care, the only practical way to cope with the decline and death of the Baby Boom.

• Mental health: The BC Liberal plan so far is expanding homeless shelters and singleroom-occupancy containment facilities for continuous street drug binges.

This is popular with drug abusers across the country, as we have seen.

Housing czar Rich Coleman will likely announce his latest plan to do something with the Riverview Hospital property.

The NDP will cling to its Soviet-era demand for a five-year plan for poverty reduction.

• Energy: Clark wants to stop talking about the Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion. It’s a fed-

eral decision, you know.

All she did was shake down the oil producers for a cut of the profit, in exchange for her government’s “approval” of this federal project.

Clark got a pass from the media for this apparently unconstitutional demand, part of her “five conditions” for issuing provincial permits she could have held hostage.

The NDP and Green Party will carry on with dramatic disaster talking points about what is really a six-per-cent increase in shipping traffic on the B.C. coast, coupled with substantial and longoverdue marine rescue assets.

• Youth in care: B.C.’s new Representative for Children and Youth carries on the tradition of highlighting the worst cases, most recently the flagrant neglect by a subcontractor paid $8,000 a month to supervise troubled teenager Alex Gervais in Abbotsford.

Gervais was on his own in a hotel for 10 days before jumping through a window to his death.

Calls for the resignation of Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux will again be rebuffed, and work will continue on a growing problem of family breakdown that no B.C. government has had much success in dealing with.

Short-term contractors will continue to be employed, because there aren’t enough foster parents to cope with the current epidemic of failed parenting.

WHERE IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR TEACHERS? Editor: In light of the controversial debate over spring break, I think now is a good time to bring up another issue affecting the education of our children.

It’s the big grey elephant in the middle of the room that people don’t want to talk about: The lack of accountability for

poor performance from some of our teachers.

We all know the ones. However our current system has no way of plucking the ‘bad apples’ from the basket and our children’s education suffers because of it.

Perhaps if the teachers were graded as the students

are, we would be left with the ones who truly want to be there to educate our children, not the ones who kick back, throw on a movie and ask students to do a lunch run for them.

Hearing the stories out of my kids mouths about how little they actually learn from certain

problematic educators infuriates me.

Not only do I now have to teach my kids what they are supposed to learn from their actual teachers (which I am not qualified to do), but my kids have no respect for these persons they should look up too.

So many times we hear of our youth

having a lack of respect.

Well, respect is earned and it’s about time some of our educators learned this. I highly respect the teachers that go that extra mile and care about the education of these kids, but it’s about time the teachers who don’t care and are just there for the

three months off a year, a great wage and nice pension are given consequences for their poor performance, which essentially impacts the future of our kids.

I see this solely resting on the shoulders of the minister of education and the BCTF. Fix it.

Governments at all levels: This problem requires more than just money. Take action.

Blizzard slams Atlantic Canada THE CANADIAN PRESS

HALIFAX — Atlantic Canada was being blasted by a powerful winter storm yesterday that cancelled flights and shuttered everything from schools and municipal offices to businesses and hospital services throughout the region.

In Nova Scotia, Environment Canada meteorologist Tracey Talbot said winds were gusting to 110 kilometres per hour in Osborne Head, just outside of Halifax, and up to 20 centimetres of snow had already fallen with the storm not expected to move out until today.

“With the reduced visibilities and the heavy snow and the strong winds, it’s a pretty intense storm,’’ she said. “This is definitely a very intense storm for this winter and even for last winter.’’

VICTORIA — Romance is not in the cards for B.C. News British Columbia’s politicians who return to the legislature on this Valentine’s Day for a throne speech that sets the stage for a provincial budget and a scrappy spring election, say political experts.

Premier Christy Clark’s Liberals are coming back rattled over a website hacking affair of their own making, while the New Democrats are looking to raise the profile of their leader, John Horgan, say political scientists Hamish Telford and Michael Prince.

Green party leader Andrew Weaver is expected to continue offering his party as the alternative to the feuding Liberals and New Democrats.

“I don’t know who’s going to get roses or chocolates,’’ said Prince, a public policy expert at University of Victoria. “This brouhaha of this [past] week is just an example of the kind of edge people are on.’’

Clark apologized to Horgan for alleging the New Democrats illegally hacked a Liberal party website.

She made the apology Friday after Vicki Huntington, an Independent member of the legislature, said she and her staff easily accessed personal information of people who responded to a party survey on the website.

The dust-up could cloud Liberal plans to highlight the government’s economic and policy agenda, which culminates with its budget on Feb. 21, said Prince.

The budget is widely expected to be the government’s fifth consecutive balanced budget.

Ministry of Finance quarterly reports tracking the province’s bottom line point towards a budget surplus in the range of $2 billion.

Prince said the government has money to spend but remains vulnerable on issues connected to education, homelessness and low-income residents.

“Maybe there’s a fiscal surplus, but has there been a compassion surplus?’’ he said. “Some people I’ve talked to on the left think they could be vulnerable on what might be called compassion or meanness issues.’’

Petition calls for B.C. Family Day change VANCOUVER — As British Columbians enjoy the long weekend, thousands say the province is celebrating Family Day at the wrong time.

A petition on Change.org is calling for B.C. to align its Family Day holiday with six other provinces, including Alberta and Ontario, which hold it a week later on the third Monday of February.

The petition argues that having the holiday on the second Monday of the month makes it redundant for many workers who still have to do business with parts of the country that don’t have the day off.

The call to “Unite Family Day’’ is supported

by B.C.’s Green party leader Andrew Weaver, New Democrat MLA David Eby and a number of investment professionals.

B.C.’s Family Day has been in place since 2013 after public consultations that favoured the earlier weekend for better skiing conditions and reduced traffic over the border into the U.S., which celebrates President’s Day the following week.

As of Monday morning, the petition had over 18,000 signatures.

KSA has Kamloops-area snowmobile updates Local club has advocated for organized riding for more than 20 years The Kamloops Snowmobile Association (KSA) has been around for upwards of 20 years, helping advocate for organized snowmobiling in the Thompson Valley.

The local club is a member of the B.C. Snowmobile

Federation, the provincial body that overseas regional groups, and manages several riding areas in the region.

Membership director Brian Reeves posts regular updates on riding conditions and club events and on the group’s Facebook page.

The association

holds a number of family events throughout the year as well as poker runs and safety information sessions.

It has about 151 members and an active social media following.

For those interested in touring the valley, the Tod Mountain (Sun Peaks) area

Tips: Riding without incident Remember these tips from the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organization when out of the trails: • Choose your time and place: A designated area or a defined, organized trail may be available, but it’s your choice whether to ride there or not.

In a non-engineered setting, conditions change rapidly due to varying temperature, sudden storms, snow quality, terrain, heavy usage or variables like drifts and fallen trees.

Do your homework before heading out and decide if, when and how to ride based on the conditions.

If your decision is to go snowmobiling after carefully evaluating all factors and variables, you willingly assume any risks and all responsibility for what happens on trip.

• Spread out: Too often a group of snowmobilers ride so close together that it looks as if their sleds are linked together like a freight train.

Whether you’re trail riding or backcountry riding, keeping a safe distance from other riders is the smart choice.

Driving too close on the road is called tailgating and is against the law because of the associated dangers.

When tailgating, you are at the mercy of the person in front of you — how fast that rider can react to whatever’s ahead and how fast you can react to that reaction.

Tailgating jeopardizes your own ability to make a quick choices and cuts your reaction time, leaving you vulnerable to the actions of others.

• Be vigilant: While riding, it’s important to practice 360-degree awareness. Simply put, you always need to know what’s going on around you to be able to properly assess your position and your next move.

Target fixation occurs when a rider’s eyes become locked on one object ahead, to the exclusion of everything else.

This semi-hypnotic state happens while tailgating, staring too long at one thing ahead or when everything in view is white on white.

Being tired or impaired can play a role, too.

Stay alert by moving your eyes around constantly and always checking around you.

If fixation persists, take a break. When trail riding, you’re also responsible for the rider behind you, and the easiest way to keep track is using mirrors.

The main conclusion of the forensic report is this line: “It is not possible to properly determine what the impact on the teams individually or as a whole would be if they had to pay the players

minimum wage.”

So, not a terribly successful exercise so far. Smith Forensics says there isn’t enough information to properly assess the true earnings of the teams, or their actual expenses.

There is also a subtle indication that the league, and its teams, weren’t all that interested in providing a complete picture.

“It appears that the skill-set of KPMG was greatly under-utilized due to the inherent limitations associated with the assignment that they were asked to complete,” the report says.

I am no accountant, but that sounds like accountant trash talk.

There are other curiosities raised by the numbers provided.

If the teams on average lose money every year, why is it that five of them — two OHL and three WHL — have been sold in the past few years for between $6 million and $10 million? Why would money-losing teams not show a decline in value over several years of reported losses?

There’s another question that the forensic report doesn’t ask: If the major-junior system is as financially strained as the teams seem to indicate, why aren’t the leagues desperately trying to fix it?

Obituaries & In Memoriam Norval Guy Taylor It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Norval G. Taylor on January 8, 2017 at his home in Kamloops, BC. Norval was born in Lacombe, Alberta, on April 8, 1926. He grew up on a farm near Lacombe and when he was 15 the family moved north to a farm outside of Edson.

In 1946 he married his sweetheart of 4 years Vivian Ramisch. They were married 68 years until Vivian’s passing in October 2014.

Norval worked many jobs over the years..... a farmer, a sawyer, a trucker, a heavy duty mechanic, a manager of the service department at Finning in Whitehorse, Yukon and ending with Finning in Kamloops as a technical consultant. Norval and Vivian retired to their acreage outside of Kamloops in 1982. There they enjoyed their retirement years going back to their roots....farming, gardening and raising Morgan horses.

Norval is survived by his daughters Marilyn Phillips of Kamloops, Lorna (Brad) Eliason of Kamloops and his son Raymond (Lea) Taylor of Abbotsford. He is also survived by his grandchildren Luke Eliason, Justin (Cara) Eliason and family, Drew Eliason, Lisa (Steve) Foottit and family, Tim (Angela) Taylor and family and Andrew Taylor. Norval is also survived by his sister Mayme Henning of Edson, Alberta and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on February 18, 2017 at Schoenings Funeral Service, 513 Seymour Street, Kamloops.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Shriner’s.

James Robert Oscar James Oscar passed away peacefully at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC on February 4th, 2017 at 4:00 pm at the age of 77 years after a lengthy illness, with his loving wife Clara by his side.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Clara and her son Terrance Lampereau, Jim’s children Clifford, Crystal, Carmayne, Cheryl and Christine, Jim’s sister Rita (Edward) Day, his brother Charles “Bob” (Rose) Oscar as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jim is predeceased by his parents Lucy and Wally Oscar, Bob’s twin baby brother, Ruth Damel (Oscar) and Nora Tweedie (Oscar).

Jim will be sadly missed by many.

First Memorial Funeral Service Cleo Williams On Tuesday, January 24, 2017 Cleo passed away peacefully at Royal Inland Hospital at the age of 94.

She was born on May 16, 1922 in Bassano, Alberta and was predeceased by her parents Elmer and Lavina Williams, her brother Jack Williams, her brother-in-law Bill Williams and her beloved sister Lorna Williams.

Left to mourn are her nieces and nephews spanning three generations, Joanne Townie, Gwen and Wayne English, Gwen Townie, Sean and Erin English, Erin and Marcel Legros, Joshua English, Quentin English, Harrison English and Jack Westwood.

Auntie Cleo was someone that everyone loved to talk to, no matter where we went people were drawn to her kindness and her sense of humour. Although she never had children of her own, she helped raise her nieces and was an older sister, aunt and friend to many.

She will be dearly missed.

Streamlining transportation with tech

Arrow Transportation’s offshoot company gaining momentum in field of navigation, data gathering CAM FORTEMS

A transportation company with a long history in Kamloops is the latest success in the city’s emerging technology sector.

Community leaders gathered Friday at Kamloops Innovation Centre to celebrate the growth of an offshoot of Arrow Transportation Systems Inc., whose signature yellow rigs are a common sight on B.C. highways.

Streamline Transportation Technologies is a decade-old company gathering momentum in the field of truck transportation navigation and data gathering, leading to an increasingly automated system that can slow a truck down to 30 km/h in a school zone, for example. The company’s main product is called Navistream and is making an impact in a crowded field, what it calls the “Internet of moving things.”

Dan De Palma, the company’s vicepresident of sales and marketing, said development of the growing technology firm grew out of Arrow’s use of competing systems in its fleet of several hundred trucks.

Its supplier went bankrupt, causing Arrow to decide to develop its own system.

That system, tried and tested on its own fleet, is now available to partnering companies. De Palma said one of the key aspects is driver logs, which

are traditionally kept on paper. That recordkeeping is now kept electronically, allowing a driver to more easily understand how many more hours he is

allowed to drive before required rest, for example. It also allows better compliance with other government regulations for trucking.

The company has

located in the floor of the Kamloops Innovation Centre on Tranquille Road, where about 25 employees are located.

chased two competing firms and is using those acquisitions to gain momentum.

De Palma said the Kamloops office is the centre of the techno-

logical development.

“You have an idea and they make it happen.”

About 2,300 trucks are now using the technology and De Palma said the company is exceeding its targets for growth.

Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone said Streamline is another example of a growing technology sector, which now has an estimated 100,000 employees in B.C. Calling Streamline “one of the success stories,” Stone, who founded a tech firm before going into politics four years ago, said the local sector has growth from 12 to 15 companies in Kamloops to an estimated 160.

Mayor Peter Milobar said he was pleased to see Streamline take up the space vacated by ITel, another local technological success that recently moved to the former Weyerhaeuser head office building in Mission Flats.

“There was a worry we were losing jobs and energy from the North Shore,” he said.

De Palma said transportation technology is moving from recording and gathering data technologies to automation that allows control by algorithms stored in the cloud in two-way communication with transport trucks.

Not a day has gone by in eight years of owning Erwin’s Fine Baking and Delicatessen that Shawn Haley hasn’t heard about parking.

“Some people quite loudly,” he said. “They get a ticket, they come in, they’re screaming at me. I didn’t put my money in the meter, but they take it out on you because they’re coming in here.”

It’s one of the reasons why, after about 30 years in downtown

Kamloops, the scratch bakery closed its doors on St. Paul Street Saturday to reopen across the Red Bridge later this month.

Haley and wife Robyn bought it from Erwin and Elisabeth Nyfeler, who formerly owned multiple bakeries in the area since the early 1970s.

“There’s a lot more opportunity we feel in the other location,” Haley told KTW. “We think it’s a nicer space, it’s going to have easy access, free parking.”

closures, including the Kamloops Daily News, which remains shuttered across the street.

“Unfortunately, through the years we’ve seen a lot less people working in downtown Kamloops and the lunch rush that we used to see keeps getting thinner and thinner,” Haley said.

At one point, Erwin’s had 20 employees.

Today, it employs half that, all of whom will be heading with the Haleys to the new location, including longtime baker Darrell Ranger, who started as an apprentice with Erwin decades ago.

Erwin’s is expected to reopen at 419C Mount Paul Way at the end of the month — Feb. 27 is the tentative opening date — and Haley is looking forward to serving lunch to businesses in the industrial park and offering a convenience store to surrounding communities like Sun Rivers.

Dee’s Country Kitchen and Mount Paul Golf Course offer lunch nearby.

“They’re fundamentally different than us in the sense they’re more of a sit-down place and we’re more of a take and go,” Shawn said.

The new location is roughly the same square footage as the St. Paul Street building, but the layout is better, Haley said. It will have seating, a lunch counter and offer the same sandwiches, creme horns, wrapped hams and grocery items customers have come to know over the years.

Catering and delivery, free when ordering more than $25 worth of items, will continue and they’ll still be at the Kamloops Farmers’ Market and Royal Inland Hospital on Tuesdays.

The charitable token program, which allows customers to purchase stipends for breakfast buns at a discounted rate to be given to those in need, will continue but could change if tokens are no longer turned in.

“It’s going to be the same thing we do now,” Haley said. “We’re just going to do it over there.”

There have been mixed responses. Some have expressed disappointment online, while others have praised the decision and new parking. Haley said regulars have called who “weren’t very happy” but hopes the quality they strive for draws people over the bridge, noting the span from front door to front door is just two kilometres.

“The surest way to fail is please everybody,” he said.

It’s unclear whether any businesses will be filling the vacant location on St. Paul Street.

Do you have a customer or prospect who treats you like some sort of sales poodle?

A sales poodle believes his job is to satisfy the customer.

The customer is king is a core belief.

When push comes to shove, the sales poodle acts in a manner that reinforces the customers belief he is more important.

Furthermore, a sales poodle is: • not respected by his customer; • expected to run and fetch; • expected to wag his tale after given the run around; • not considered a business equal; • can never be a trusted advisor.

Take this test to identify whether you are a sales poodle. Score one point for each true statement.

• Are you willing to drop everything to meet with a prospect (usually at the first date and time they suggest)?

• Do you invest time writing sales proposals you didn’t create?

• Do you allow your prospects to determine the rules of your selling interactions (whom you can speak to, what you can discuss, etc.)?

• When you bring up the topic of money, and your prospect fobs you off with a “we don’t discuss money with vendors,” do you just continue?

• Do you thank your prospect for their time at the start of a call or meeting?

• Do you work hard for your customer, only to never have them return your calls or emails?

• Do you consider their money more important than your time?

• Do you take work home?

• Do you check your emails when on holidays?

• Do you accept behaviour (i.e. showing up late) from a prospect they would not accept from you?

Doll based on transgender teen to debut at New York Toy Fair WASHINGTON — A New York doll maker says it will be selling what it believes is the first transgender doll on the market. The doll is based on Jazz Jennings, the teenage transgender subject of the TLC documentary series I am Jazz. It will make its debut at the New York Toy Fair next week and be available on the Tonner Doll Co.’s website and in

specialty stores in July.

A spokesman for the company said the 18-inch doll, which has a genderless plastic mould typical of most dolls, is being tested for kids aged eight years and older and is expected to retail for $89.99.
