People of all faiths have reached out to their Muslim neighbours in the wake of the fatal shootings at a Quebec City mosque on Sunday night. Faisal Siddiqui, president of the Kamloops Islamic Association, said his community “is in shock since we have heard of recent attacks on places of worship and their attendees. “In particular, the event in Quebec is very difficult to believe that such an odium exists in our beloved country of Canada.” This Friday, at the end of the noon service at the Ayesha Mosque in Knutsford, a session will be held to offer prayers for the victims and their families. It’s expected to begin at about 1:30 p.m. and anyone can attend. The mosque is at 2805 Highway 5A South. The victims of the mass shooting at the Quebec City mosque were fathers, businessmen, a university professor and others who had gathered for evening prayers, a Muslim community leader said yesterday as he recalled through tears the horror of the attack that killed six and injured 19 others. “It’s a very, very big tragedy for us,’’ said Mohamed Labidi, vice-president of the Centre Culturel Islamique de Quebec, the mosque where the attack happened. “We have a sadness we cannot express.’’ Labidi said the victims, all men, were shot in the back as they prayed. SEIZED ITEMS RETURNED TO GYM
LAWYER ARGUES ‘UNLAWFUL’ AND ‘EGREGIOUS’ ACTIONS BY POLICE TIM PETRUK STAFF REPORTER @kamloopsthisweek.com
Police will return items seized earlier this month during a high-profile raid of a North Shore gym — a search described by the lawyer for the business owner as “egregious” and “unlawful.” Heavily armed Kamloops Mounties and RCMP tactical officers descended on
Heavy Metal Gym on Jan. 13. According to City of Kamloops licensing documents, the gym is owned by Konaam Shirzad — described as a cofounder of the Red Scorpions gang last decade. Jeremy Jensen, Shirzad’s lawyer, said police found nothing incriminating at the gym and alleged police were specifically forbidden from seizing what they did.
TRYING TO FILL EMPTY SPACES
Jensen said investigators made off with computers and other office equipment. “The things they seized, they were not lawfully entitled to seize them,” he said. “There are obviously significant privacy issues at play when a computer is seized, which makes the unlawful seizure even more egregious.” See OWNER, A4
