Citing police work she said “defies any reasonable explanation,” a Kamloops judge has acquitted on all counts a trio of men facing more than a dozen firearm- and property-related charges.

William Hill, Mark Pauls and Andrew Shreenan were arrested on May 4 after being found hiding beneath fallen trees in a wooded area near Little Fort, a community an hour north of Kamloops on Highway 5 North.

The three men had been in custody since their arrest.

During a B.C. Supreme Court trial in December, court heard Mounties from Barriere and Clearwater launched an investigation after two cars sped past a police vehicle on Highway 5 North near Little Fort and took off at speeds reaching 150 km/h.

Police lost track of the vehicles and offi-

cers began to look for the vehicles on logging roads and turnoffs.

About an hour later, an officer found two cars on a trail off a logging road. One of them was rammed by an unmarked RCMP SUV and three men — Hill, Pauls and Shreenan — ran from the vehicles into the woods.

When they were found, four hours later, the men were wet and shivering. It had been raining in the area, but they told police they were fishing when they fell out of a canoe and into a nearby lake.

In the vehicles, police found two shotguns — one of them stolen — ammunition, a white powder and drug paraphernalia.

Based on distinct clothing seen in a dash-cam recording, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Sheri Donegan found that the men were the same trio that fled police.

But she failed to convict them on any of the 14 charges they had been facing.

Donegan said she suspects the men were guilty, but she could not convict them

because of sloppy police work.

“None of the items were forensically tested,” Donegan said, adding that the white powder was also never analyzed to determine if it was a drug.

“In a procedure that defies any reasonable explanation, the police officers removed items [from the vehicles] and placed them on the grass and dirt outside the Clearwater [RCMP]detachment to photograph them.”

Donegan noted the shotguns were never tested for fingerprints or DNA, nor were various other items found in the vehicles.

Donegan said there is no evidence proving any of the men had possession of anything in the vehicles or the vehicles themselves — one of which was stolen.

“Why none of these tests were performed has not been explained,” she said.

“Suspicion falls short of proof that is required. . . . There is no forensic evidence tying any of the three accused to the items.”

Bevin Avilier’s son Ocean is sad he can no longer visit McDonald’s, but understands why.

The seven-year-old has a peanut allergy and, following the fast-food chain’s announcement it is no longer nut-safe, Avilier said a meal there is no longer on the menu.

Avilier is not alone. From the Twitter hashtag #NotLovinIt to petitions and calls to the corporate office, people have expressed their anger about the decision.

The change was sparked by the addition of a new McFlurry that contains almonds — and those nuts won’t be kept in a separate package as has been the case in the past at the restaurant chain.

Avilier called McDonald’s to express her concerns and said she was told the company was taking names of callers.

Local franchise owner Al Gozda referred questions to the corporate office. He said he couldn’t predict if the change would impact his restaurants.

Food Allergy Canada, a national organization that provides education and advocacy for people with food allergies, has issued a letter to John Betts, the CEO of McDonald’s Restaurants of

Canada, calling on him “to reconfirm his commitment of offering a safer dining experience for all his guests.”

It is also collecting names on a petition it will send to the company.

McDonald’s has issued a statement that it won’t be changing its mind and ”shouldn’t be held to a different standard from other restaurants.”

Amanda Cosburn takes issue with that stance.

The mother of a 10-month-old daughter, she said McDonald’s has targeted families in its marketing.

“It has kids’ menus and play areas and the first thing you think of when you think of McD’s is child-friendly by reputation — and now it’s not,” she said.

Cosburn’s pediatrician recommended she slowly expose her daughter to potential food allergies, including peanuts. She gave Madelyn a pea-sized amount after she reached six months of age and said a rash broke out.

“We are supposed to wait and then try putting some on her cheek or hands to see if her skin goes red,” Cosburn said. “If she does it again, she could potentially be allergic and we have to follow up with an allergist.”

Linda Kirste is an allergy nutrition service dietitian with HealthLine B.C. She said it’s important to note there is a dif-

ference between peanut and tree nut allergies — noting almonds come from trees.

Both account for most severe reactions. Studies have indicated about two per cent of the population has a peanut allergy and up to seven per cent has tree nut allergies.

Kirste said it’s possible to be allergic to both allergens.

Exposure can come in various ways, she said. For example, steam could release the proteins in the allergens that can trigger a reaction. Peanut-shell dust can also contain that protein and, if that dust is on an object that someone touches, they could transfer it to their mouth.

Older children can be taught to keep their fingers out of their mouths, Kirste said, but it’s not as easy for toddlers to learn.

That is why, Cosburn said, other mothers she knows won’t take their children to McDonald’s for fear of contamination from a slide or toy or table that could be potentially dangerous for someone with a nut allergy.

“Skin to skin contact with a contaminated surface puts them at risk,” she said. “Something as simple as opening a door after someone walks out with their food or leaving from eating is enough to trigger anaphylaxis in a severe case.”

Kirste said experts are now recommending people “get away from peanut-free and create peanut-aware.”

That’s why some doctors now recommend the pattern of exposure after six months that Cosburn is doing.

Kirste said early exposure can lead to training the child’s intestinal track to learn to tolerate those potential allergens.

udy Moore stands in the eastern corner of the Kamloops Library, describing the 880-square-foot cafe she hopes will soon be housed in the building on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Victoria Street downtown.

“That’s really with an intention of creating a friendlier people space,” the chief librarian of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District library system told KTW. “The cafe would open on to the library during all hours of library operation, I’m imagining.”

The cafe is a big part of the $350,000 modernization the downtown library is on the verge of undertaking, but it’s only one of what will be a number of changes.

Moore hits on all the renovation’s objectives as she tours the

space — relevant, convenient, consolidated, functional, modern.

“The genesis of this was the fact that I think the library is looking a little bit drab,” she said.

More than paint and a little carpet is needed to update the 19,000-square-foot space that opened in 1998.

“Technology is really playing a role in this, too,” Moore said.

“Technology, to some extent, is driving this project.”

The modernization will bring with it a great deal of cosmetic changes, in addition to functional ones.

The main floor of the library will be reorganized to feature magazine, newspaper, audio/ visual, teen and children’s collections.

It will be built around a revamped customer-service desk, parked adjacent to the new information commons, where all of the library’s public computers

will be consolidated.

The first floor is also expected to include an updated children’s space and self-checkout units.

The cafe, which is already being pitched to potential tenants — who will foot the bill for that portion of the renovation — will open on to the plaza, with courtyard seating and another entrance to the library.

The second floor of the building will be zoned for quieter activities, with bookable publicmeeting and group-use rooms.

Adult print collections will be consolidated and an area has been earmarked for Kamloops Makerspace.

Increased study and softseating areas will be enhanced by removing the library’s lowhanging wooden window coverings, opening views to Mount Peter and Mount Paul on the horizon.

Externally, a stronger visual identity will be established with branding and signage.

“Underscoring all of this is relevance, we need to be a much stronger people place than ever before,” Moore said.

“People are deciding how it is they want to spend their limited time and, certainly, we want to offer library services that are in step with how people spend that time.”

It is expected the library will experience a sixweek closure during the modernization.

Ideally, the project will be finished in its entirety by mid-year.

This weekend, Moore and her colleagues will play host to a coffeehouse, giving the public an opportunity to weigh in on any potential changes and get a first-hand look at what the TNRD has planned for the space.

The event will run from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday at the library.

THE HOT AND NOT OF THE WEEK Kamloops This Week looks at the stories of the week — the good, the bad and all in-between:

HOT: Plans to modernize the library in downtown Kamloops.

For a facility that opened back in 1998, it has a remarkably current open-air design as is, though changes planned will only improve what is a gem of a place.

Adding a cafe and second entrance off the plaza will enhance the library and, hopefully, serve to deter some of the ne’er-do-wells who hang out there now, causing grief for passersby.

If you have some thoughts on a new-look library, you are welcome to attend an information session at the library on Sunday at 2 p.m.

NOT: The latest news to come from the construction site that is the building housing Westsyde Pool.

Residents of the neighbourhood have been without a pool since June 2015. Due to a mistake by the contractor replacing the building’s roof, the wait to wade will be a bit longer.

Had the job gone smoothly, the pool would have reopened next month. However, with roof decking installed without a protective coating as required in D and T Developments Ltd.’s contract with the city, reopening day remains a mystery.

Release and repeat

T

he provincial government heralded the latest changes in liquor rules this week by sending out a press release it had sent out a few weeks ago.

Government often does that, sending out a release announcing it is making a change, then sending out another release announcing the date those changes will take place, then sending out a press release the day before the date those changes will take place, then sending out a press release the day of the changes taking place, reminding us that the changes it had repeatedly announced are now in effect.

The number of press releases repeating good news is directly related to the proximity of the next provincial election.

By late March, we will be inundated with press releases reminding us the Coquihalla Highway toll booth has been levelled, Sunday shopping is now legal and SkyTrain is a nifty new way to get around downtown Vancouver.

Such announcements are not the exclusive domain of any one political party, though it seems the B.C. Liberals have ramped up the practise of release-and-repeat beyond that imagined by previous New Democrat and Social Credit governments.

It can be annoying, but it is understandable and can be effective for the party in power.

Think of it as a conquer-byexhaustion strategy.

Repeat something again and again and, eventually, it becomes solidified as fact in the minds of

MUSINGS the weary on the receiving end.

This is why we know with certainty the 1.5-million people blanketing the U.S. Capitol lawn and National Mall on Jan. 20 constituted the largest presidentialinauguration crowd of all time.

This is also why we know the rain stopped the very second President Donald Trump began speaking.

This is also why we know the extra 2.9-million votes Hillary Clinton received in the November election were cast by illegal immigrants.

But I digress lest facts infiltrate the alternative facts now accepted as fact in this age of alternative fact-checking the facts.

The election silly season is a boon for communications officers and Internet providers that charge by the email.

Rosy announcements are usually trumpeted to the masses as the work week begins — the better to get the story into newspapers and onto television and radio newscasts when voters are not distracted by weekend leisure pursuits.

The aforementioned announcement of relaxed liquor laws, for example, were strategically sent to media outlets on Sunday night, just in time to have stories ready for voters on Monday morning.

Who wouldn’t be buoyed by breaking news that a beer can now be taken from the golf course clubhouse to the patio outside, or that complimentary drinks when checking into your hotel are now legal?

Less upbeat announcements are generally sent out at 4:59 p.m. or later on a Friday afternoon, just as voters’ minds are on a bottle of wine and 48 hours of thinking about anything but politics.

This is why Premier Christy Clark’s decision to ditch her extra $50,000 annual paycheque (funded by voters via tax-deductible donations to her party) amid heavy criticism was announced, whisper-like, last Friday as afternoon greeted evening.

Not surprisingly, press releases of the latter variety are not part of the release-and-repeat strategy.

They are more of the releaseand-hope-like-hell-the-media-istoo-busy-or-too-understaffed-tofollow-up type because they are connected to controversy.

Prepare to be papered with announcements from all political parties as the race to the May 9 election hits the home stretch.

Right about now, the weekend and wine are calling.

STUDENTS HAD ONCE-IN-LIFETIME EXPERIENCE Editor: Over the past few years, I’ve been involved in the outdoor education program at a local high school in Kamloops. We have sought to broaden the program through connection with families in our school community.

On a recent weekend, I had the opportunity to witness the immense generosity of some people in our community and would like to thank the Vitoratos family for giving a group of students the experience of a lifetime.

They found a way to make it work so our students could experience the outdoors in a way many of them never had before. If that wasn’t enough, they provided extra snacks, hot chocolate, disposable

hand and foot warmers and even an extra space heater — none of which were asked for nor expected.

On behalf of the students, parents, myself and my family, thank you for stepping up to provide these young people with such an amazing (and, for some, once-in-a-lifetime) opportunity.

Editor: There have been women’s marches taking place in many cities and I am puzzled.

What is the main message from those gatherings?

Is President Trump going to take their jobs (if they have any) away? Perhaps their kids will be taken?

Will they lose the right to vote, the right

to have an abortion or the right of same-sex marriage?

Who financed the expenses associated with the marches, such as transportation and food? Was it George Soros, the Saudis or China?

Where were those protesters when million of people in Iraq and Libya died in wars based on lies? What

about the horrible killings done by ISIS in Syria? Where were the protests against the killings of hundreds by radical Muslims around the globe?

It has been said these marches have been the largest since the Vietnam War. Well, those marches had a cause and I don’t see one today.

THEFT OF MAIL Early Thursday morning at approximately 2:00 am a lone male broke in an apartment building on the 1100 block of Hugh Allan Drive. The suspect used a crowbar to force his way into the building then used the same crow bar to open up numerous mail boxes. This has not been the first time the mail boxes have been broken into, it is unknown if this is the same suspect who broke into the mail boxes the last time. A video surveillance photo caught the suspect in the lobby. The suspect is Caucasian, late 20’s, slim build, he was wearing a winter jacket that had a hood with fake fur around it. The male is clearly seen holding the mail from the mail boxes.

There was also a newer black SUV seen leaving the parking lot of the building that may be associated to this suspect.

SUSPECT CAUGHT ON CAMERA Early on Saturday, January 21st a suspect entered a business in the Sahali area and walked out with a couple of items. This male really did not care about who was in the store as he walked around the store for a brief period of time. The suspect grabbed the items and calmly walked out of the store without making any attempts to pay for the items. The suspect would have gotten away with the theft, except a staff member found an empty spot on the shelf, then

reviewed the security video. After looking through the video, a suspect came to light, a Caucasian male, early 50’s, bald, with a dark coloured goatee, he had on a dark coloured jacket with a light-coloured lining.

He may have left in a small green Hyundai car, the direction of travel for this vehicle is unknown.

Causes of Domtar fires likely linked Investigators believe back-to-back fires at Domtar’s Kamloops pulp mill earlier this month were linked, but such a theory is not conclusive.

Crews from Kamloops Fire Rescue were called to the mill late in the evening on both Jan. 17 and 18 for similar small fires in the steam plant area.

Ray Webster, an investigator with Kamloops Fire Rescue, said the cause of the first fire can be traced to a leak in a six-inch hydraulic hose. That leak in the pressured line sprayed fuel on a nearby steam pipe, causing the fire.

“The second one we’re not 100 per cent sure,” Webster said, adding investigators believe oil from the earlier leak entered the metal-clad wall and later caught fire.

“Both fires literally happened six feet away and a day apart.”

Webster said follow up will be conducted by Domtar officials. That includes sending the burst hydraulic hose to the manufacturer to better determine the cause.

A long-unfinished condo complex on the Summit Connector may finally be completed, according to the city’s planning department.

At council’s regular Tuesday meeting, Peter Thornhill, an artist whose home overlooks the Mission Hill development, said he wants to see the city take action on the partly constructed building, which has remained a steel and concrete skeleton for years.

“It looks like some bombedout Third World city,” Thornhill said, asking why the city has not forced the property’s owners to get to work or tear down the structure.

Director of development and

engineering services Marvin Kwiatkowski said the city has options to try to force action on the building, adding he is optimistic the owner is on track to resume construction.

Kwiatkowski said the city has spoken with Brentwood Developments, which was hired to complete the condo after an Ontario creditor foreclosed on the property in late 2010, and expects to see new development applications some time this spring.

“We’re all hopeful they’ll be coming in short order with the plans,” he said.

Asked if the building can be safely completed, Kwiatkowski said portions of the structure are still usable, but not all.

“They have done an engineering report on that and, yes,

some of the materials will be replaced, including the windows,” he said.

Mission Hill was originally developed by New Future group, headed by Kamloops developer Mike Rink. The group of companies filed for creditor protection in 2010.

In 2014, Brentwood Developments development manager Kyle Braithwaite told KTW the company wanted to sell off the remaining 24 units in its completed 54-unit development before moving on.

Kwiatkowski said it is his understanding most of those units are now sold.

Attempts by KTW to contact Brentwood about its plans for the project, which have been ongoing since October, have gone unanswered.

Five projects funded with climate cash The City of Kamloops wants to find out if it can generate something new from what residents flush away.

At its Tuesday meeting, city council agreed to spend $55,000 from its climate-action reserve fund to look at using its steeper sewer pipes to generate hydroelectric power.

The sewage microhydro study is one of five projects being funded using climateaction cash, which the city receives from the province because it is

a BC Climate Action Charter signatory.

The grants are intended to fund projects that reduce greenhouse gases or otherwise make Kamloops more sustainable.

Sustainability supervisor Glen Cheetham said the hydro study will get the city to the point where the program could be rolled out on a large scale if other government grants were available.

The city could generate about 325,000 kilowatt hours of power a year, which it

would sell back to the grid. That many hours could power 32 average homes for a year.

Other projects council agreed to fund include: • a $9,000 test of two idling-reduction technologies for city vehicles; • an ice-making retrofit at McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre, which will eliminate the need for hot water (the system, which costs $76,500 for two units, is already in place at Brock Arena); • two parking-stall

bike racks shaped like cars, which will hold 10 or more bicycles, at a cost of $17,000.

The last item was approved with the rest, but not before it was questioned by a perplexed Coun. Denis Walsh.

“I know we have our own shop and I find it hard to believe they couldn’t put a bike rack together,” he said.

Cheetham said the goal is to promote cycling and its role in the reduction of greenhouse gasses.

A few days ago, a student Chris Rose taught in a 1964 Vancouver kindergarten class called him up.

The man’s mother had died and he thought she would have wanted Rose to know.

Though the longtime educator never had the opportunity to teach the children of his former pupil’s, Rose said he became lifelong friends with parents of the kids who sat in his classroom, children whose weddings he would eventually attend.

“I think that kind of relationship is something I’ve really enjoyed,” Rose said.

It speaks to his devotion to students and their education, for which he has been recognized by the Kamloops school district.

Rose is the recipient of the 2016-2017 Owl Award for Excellence in Public Education.

He retired from teaching in 1996, but spent the better part of 35 years in the Kamloops district as a principal, then as a trustee, and has dedicated much of his retirement to helping children with special needs.

He is the founder of the Chris Rose Centre for Autism and continues to play a significant role in fundraising for the organization.

“I think I would be just as happy to have my life over again, to start or continue with what I’m doing,” said Rose, who has been happily married to Gine for 57 years and has seven adult grandchildren.

“It’s been my passion.”

Rose was honoured with the Order of B.C. in 2010 and continues to credit people around him for his fulfilling career — fellow teachers, principals, school staff and parents.

“I think if one shows an interest in children, parents will recognize that and go the extra mile in providing what they can offer because I think it becomes almost like a family affair, which is something you can’t replicate in a system where there isn’t that close relationship,” Rose said.

“With anything like education or social work, it can’t become a job. It’s got to be more.”

Rose began his teaching career in his home country of Northern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, but left when the southern Africa nation gained independence. He then spent a short period of time in England, where he had earlier undergone training to work with deaf children.

“There was a job advertised in North Vancouver, so that was it,” Rose said. “Although I didn’t know much about Canada, it just sounded like that would be a wonderful opportunity. It could have been disastrous.

“We came across by train and every day we got a little further away from everything we knew. We were a long way from home. But people were very hospitable and friendly and that was the best part of coming here.”

Rose’s job brought him to Kamloops in 1970 after a period as principal at Jericho Hills School for the Deaf. He was principal at Fitzwater School for the Handicapped, then went to Overlander secondary, now the Henry Grube Education Centre.

He was principal at Happyvale elementary and ended his in-school career at Beattie.

Upon retirement, Rose was asked to help revive the autism program, Giant Steps West, which was in 2002 renamed the Chris Rose Centre for Autism.

Opportunity has taken him to other countries, but Rose rarely thought of leaving Kamloops. He wouldn’t have gained more meaningful experience in any larger districts, he said.

“I couldn’t have done better. The opportunities I’ve had, the opportunities that have been

given to me through the school district, they’ve allowed me to try different things and I don’t think anyone could have had a better experience,” Rose said.

Much has changed in education since the mid-1960s, particularly the integration of special-needs students in public schools. It’s what led Rose to elementary education because he could see that was the direction in which the system was moving.

“I think it was certainly a necessary step, but I think the problem was they didn’t have enough funding to really see it through properly,” Rose said.

“I think a lot of the children really miss out and, you know, that’s the good thing about the Chris Rose Centre, is they have the opportunity to also be in a regular school as well as a special-needs school.

I think there needs to be a continuum of service.”

Rose has worked with special-needs students since the early stages of his career, inspired by one child who struggled with speech that led Rose to seek special education training in Manchester.

In coming to Canada, Rose was impressed with the resources available and the opportunity to test new technology and strategies, something he would have missed out on had he stayed in Zimbabwe.

He has also devoted his efforts to aiding homeless youth, sitting on the board of the ASK Wellness Society, working with Out of the Cold and donating to Covenant House Vancouver, which works with street youth.

Through his work with Rotary, Rose has also fundraised for rural schools in Zimbabwe.

“I think any child that has a need is one that is of interest to me,” Rose said, “And, beyond that, any child and any way I can help improve their lot in life.”

New Year’s Day was the most exciting time of year for Dali Li. As a young boy growing up in Harbin, a city of roughly fourmillion people in northern China, it was a day spent with family.

Li would make dumplings with his parents and grandparents for family dinner that night.

His father would take him outside to set off firecrackers at night, scaring away evil and ridding the family of

any bad luck entering the new year. Red envelopes filled with money would be passed from parents and grandparents to children.

With Chinese New Year arriving tomorrow, all those memories are flooding back for Li. “It’s like Christmas in Western culture,” said Li, president of the Kamloops Chinese Cultural Association.

“Families get together and celebrate the new year. When I was growing up, it was the most exciting time of the year. I was looking forward to it.”

Tomorrow, the

association will host a celebration at the Lotus Inn Restaurant, 512 Tranquille Rd. on the North Shore, with happy hour at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m.

The celebration is open to the public.

Tickets are $30 and can be purchased by calling 250-376-2611.

It is the Year of the Rooster, with those born this year expected to be trustworthy, with a strong sense of timekeeping and responsibility in their work.

The Chinese zodiac includes 12 animals that rotate every 12 years. Past Rooster

years include 2005, 1993, 1981, 1969, 1957 and 1945.

Festivities at the Lotus Inn Restaurant will include dancers and Chinese folk singers, along with a traditional dinner including dumplings, spring rolls and roasted pork.

“It’s a little like what will be happening back home in Harbin,” Li said. “Families gather together and make dumplings. It’s more like a family reunion.

“A lot of people are working away from home. It’s the time of year they go back home and see their families.”

The family of Roderick HaigBrown has come out in favour of a proposal to give the iconic park that bears his name a Secwepemc moniker.

B.C. Parks acknowledged earlier this month it is in discussions to rename Roderick Haig-Brown park as part of its overall strategy to highlight First Nations culture and history.

Celia Haig-Brown, daughter of Roderick and a professor in the faculty of education at York University in Toronto, said her immediate reaction to the idea was positive. She then contacted her siblings for their input.

“We all immediately agreed — no question,” she said.

Renaming to reflect First Nations has become commonplace in Canada. A notable example are the former Queen Charlotte Islands, which are now known as Haida Gwaii.

Haig-Brown said in Toronto, where she lives, Anishinabe names are being added to street signs.

“I’m really aware of this move to recognize First Nations through naming,” she said.

Roderick Haig-Brown park was established in 1977 and given the moniker of the famed conservationist and author of nearly 30 books. During the dominant sockeye run every four years, the park is visited by hundreds of thousands of people from around the world.

Haig-Brown last lived in Kamloops in the mid-1980s and

her family maintains a cabin at Sabiston Lake. As part of her research, she has done extensive work with Secwepemc First Nations. She called Roderick Haig-Brown Park “a pilgrimage” for her family, but noted it is important for reconciliation and history to use First Nations names.

She said her father, who died shortly before the park was named after him, would be “delighted” at the idea of a Secwepemc name. While there have been suggestions of a hybrid compromise that would retain the current name and add a Secwepemc title, Haig-Brown said her family’s only wish is for the plaque with her father’s poem to remain.

“I’d like that to stay there,” she said.

Kamloops company claims it is owed $9 million for biofuel work COLE WAGNER ABERDEEN PUBLISHING newsroom@merrittherald.com

Two companies behind two biofuelenergy projects in Merritt and Fort St. James are the subject of millions of dollars in claims for outstanding invoices.

A Kamloops company, TVE Industrial Services Ltd., filed a civil claim last month, alleging it is owed it more than $9 million for work and materials provided to the two sites.

Since the start of 2016, Iberdrola Energy Projects Canada has been named as a defendant in nine different civil suits from subcontractors who worked on the projects in Merritt and Fort St. James, with $12 million-plus in allegedly unpaid bills to subcontractors who worked on the two plants.

Twelve defendants are listed on TVE’s civil claim, including the City of Merritt.

Despite the dispute between construction companies leading to a work stoppage at the Merritt Green Energy Project (MGEP) in November, a spokesman for the project said MGEP should be in operation by the end of the year.

John Turner is vice-president of operations in the B.C. region for Veolia North America, part of a pair of companies that partnered to finance the construction of the biofuel energy projects.

While Turner maintains a positive outlook on the projects, he said a series of different issues with the project’s engineering procurement and construction contractor (EPC), Iberdrola Energy Projects Canada, have plagued the co-generation plants.

Commercial operations were slated to begin last fall, but Turner said they are aiming for a fall 2017 start date.

As the EPC contractor, Iberdrola Energy Projects Canada sits one step below the Veolia/Fengate partnership — essentially, Iberdrola is contracted to ensure the construction of both plants, including subcontracting work to other companies for specific materials or labour, Turner explained.

Companies hired for specific technical work by Iberdrola — such as construction of the plants’ boilers — may also subcontract again to local companies for labour and materials.

When a payment dispute arises between a contractor at the bottom of this chain, a legal mechanism exists in Canada — called the Builders Lien Act — to ensure these contractors are paid for their work, even if they never directly signed a contract with the EPC contractor, who sits near the top of the chain. In B.C., a lien — the right to hold onto another person’s property until your debts have been paid — means subcontractors with outstanding debts from work on the Green Energy projects in Fort St. James and Merritt can claim the value of what they are owed against materials on the land, the land on which the plant is located and the plant itself.

However, another aspect of the Builders Lien Act requires companies hiring contractors for construction projects to retain a fund worth 10 per cent of the total value of the work originally agreed to in the contract, explained Chris Moore, the lawyer working on behalf of TVE.

This fund exists as a “holdback” to ensure company can still collect for the value of their work, in the event one subcontractor fails to pay another. Moore said in order to protect their interest in the holdback fund, TVE was forced to file a lien claim.

According to court documents, TVE is claiming $5.9 million in unpaid bills for work on the Merritt project and $3.6 million in Fort St. James.

Moore said he’s confident both projects will be completed, even given the string of civil suits filed against Iberdrola and a subcontracted construction company, FSE Energy.

But, as Moore explained, smaller contractors like TVE don’t have the same ability to deal with unexpected shortfalls that comes from unpaid bills on a major project.

“They’re struggling to deal with this,” said Moore. “It’s a large chunk of change.

The faster they get paid, the better for the company.”

Veolia’s vice-president echoed Moore’s concerns.

“I think it’s pretty safe to say that Veolia — being that we’re going to be in the community operating these plants for the next 30 years — is very concerned that contractors are treated fairly,” said Turner. “We’re going to count on, at this point, the contractual processes that are in place for Iberdrola and their contractors to sort out their differences.”

Once operational, the 40-megawatt plant will be able to generate 285,000 megawatt hours of electricity per year — enough to power about 30,000 homes per year, Turner said.

The 100-page Public Policy Forum report calls for a sales tax on foreign companies selling digital subscriptions in Canada and a $400-million Future of Journalism and Democracy Fund to help finance reliable news and information.

The dozen recommendations also include tax changes, a new local mandate for news agency The Canadian Press, providing free access to CBC news content and denying the public broadcaster the ability to sell digital ads.

Edward Greenspon, the report’s author, says Canada’s news industry is in deep crisis, brought on largely by a shift in advertising to digital media sites.

The veteran journalist says the recommendations are meant to ensure Canada’s democracy is well served by a strong, independent

and trustworthy news media.

Heritage Minister Melanie Joly ordered the study as part of an overall review of Canada’s media landscape, in particular how it has shifted to the Internet.

A Commons committee has also carried out its own study and is expected to report to Parliament by spring.

The report comes on the heels of what was just the latest in a series of layoffs by Postmedia, the country’s largest chain of daily-circulation newspapers.

The company issued layoff notices Tuesday to employees at the Ottawa Citizen, Montreal Gazette and Windsor Star after the company failed to reach a 20 per cent salary reduction target it set for itself last fall.

Other news giants, including the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail, have also cut staff-

consultation on media and Canadian content in a digital world that included town hall gatherings across the country.

Those forums heard a range of suggestions, including calls for new fees or taxes on foreignowned digital media players as a means of helping to prop up the domestic news industry.

Others, however, have pre-emptively scolded the government for even considering any kind of taxpayerfunded support for media outlets, arguing that audiences will ultimately turn toward new digital platforms to stay informed.

Internet freedom advocacy group OpenMedia has petitioned against what it calls an Internet tax, but has asked federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau to consider applying sales taxes evenly across foreign

online vendors operating in Canada.

In a report on Canada’s entertainment and media sector issued last summer, PricewaterhouseCoopers predicted steady growth in Internet advertising revenues, and an acceleration of the recent downturn in newspaper publishing.

Media firms have complained that, while their focus turns increasingly to online publishing, digital advertising revenues have not come anywhere close to replacing those previously generated from print ads.

Joly’s office has called the shifts in news revenue streams “significant,’’ and said the government hopes its Canadian content consultations can help it assess how to best support the production of local, credible and reliable news and information.

deal wouldn’t have had much effect either way on U.S. wages and jobs — but leaving the TPP will certainly have a big impact on U.S. power and influence in the world.

Xinhua was right: for Obama, the TPP was always more about the strategic rivalry with China than it was about economics. It still is, but Trump’s electoral strategy has obliged him to declare war on free trade.

The voters that Trump targeted most heavily were workingclass Americans who felt betrayed and abandoned as the wellpaying jobs in manufacturing disappeared.

However, there was no point in telling them automation was destroying their jobs (which it is), because he could not plausibly promise to stop automation.

But if he claimed the real problem was free trade, which allowed the Chinese and Mexicans and other sneaky foreigners to steal American jobs, well, he could certainly promise

to stop that.

He would build walls, cancel free-trade deals, even launch trade wars.

It all sounded pretty credible, if you didn’t know that the vast majority of the lost jobs were really being stolen by robots.

So once he was in office, Trump was obliged to un-sign the TPP deal, even though its main purpose, from Washington’s point of view, had been to perpetuate American economic and strategic dominance in Asia and freeze China out.

In the eyes of Trump’s supporters (and maybe even in his own), he was slaying a dragon.

It looks different through the eyes of America’s erstwhile partners. As Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in August, 11 other countries had to make big and politically painful concessions in return for access to the huge U.S. market.

It is already happening in the domain of climate change, where Trump’s decision to un-sign the 2015 Paris treaty to curb global warming has opened the door to a leadership role for China instead.

At the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos earlier this month, China’s President Xi Jinping said that “all signatories must stick to” the Paris deal: “walking away” from the pact would endanger future generations.

And while Trump is slashing U.S. spending on climate change, Xi has pledged to invest $360 billion in renewable energy in the next four years to reduce China’s greenhouse gas emissions.

It’s easy to look good in the eyes of the rest of the world when the standard of comparison is Trump’s administration. He is making China great again, even if that is not quite what he intended.

The biggest cost to the United States is the fact that America’s defection from the TPP doesn’t automatically kill the notion of an Asian free-trade bloc.

Australia is already talking about keeping the TPP going without the United States, but the likelier outcome is that the Asian members start trying to link up with China, Indonesia and even India in China’s proposed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

In that case, the United States could end up excluded from a free-trading bloc that includes half of the world economy.

The dominant economy in that bloc would be China’s, so the main practical effect of Trump’s action would be to give a major boost to China’s power and influence in the world.

roud mother Lori Miller posted a video on Facebook of her daughter wrestling, 40 seconds of tyranny inflicted on a helpless opponent.

“Knee to the back of the head! Knee to the back of the head!” yelled an onlooker, advice Georgia heeded, forcing the challenger’s mug into the mat, where it stayed for nearly the entirety of the short-lived gold-medal match.

The referee raised Georgia’s hand to declare her champion of the female 51-kilogram cadet (Grade 9 and 10) division at the Western Canada Age Class Wrestling Championships, which were held last weekend at the Tournament Capital Centre.

It was the type of domination that has become par for the course for Georgia, a Valleyview Viking, and Olympia Marra of Westsyde secondary.

Olympia is the No. 1- ranked female wrestler in the 75-kg cadet class in Canada and the No. 1-ranked female in her weight class in B.C. High School wrestling — a Grade 10 student with no superiors, not even among the

province’s Grade 12s.

She won gold at Westerns, attended by about 285 wrestlers, a relatively low number in comparison to recent years.

Tournament director Matthew Marra, Olympia’s father, said there were a few reasons for the decline, but opted to focus on the positives.

“The tournament went really well,” said Marra, a teacher at Westsyde. “It’s been a while since it’s been in Kamloops. It was hosted here for 20-something years, then we lost it to the Lower Mainland. We’re happy to have it back and to, hopefully, promote the sport more.”

For Olympia, there has already been an invitation to train for the 2020 Olympics and Simon Fraser University has shown interest in offering her a wrestling scholarship, but the overachiever — she will graduate a year early in 2018 — is not ready to make any decisions.

In fact, she is feeling a little overwhelmed.

“There’s definitely a weight that comes along with it,” said Olympia when asked about her national ranking and plans for the future. “Even just at tournaments, all the coaches know me and I’m expected to win.

“Honestly, it’s the pressure. Wrestling is so much of a head game. You don’t

have a team. You’re alone on the mat. You go in there and you’re alone.”

Wrestling on scholarship and competing at the Olympics are both on Olympia’s radar, but she is wary of the mental toll and commitment required to reach those levels.

“When it comes to the time, I’m not sure If I’ll be ready for that, but I do love wrestling and free education would be a double bonus,” she said.

The rigours of trying to graduate early, along with long hours training in the mat room at Westsyde and at the gym, caught up with Olympia. She took a short break from wrestling after Christmas.

“It’s a lot of stress actually. It got so stressful. There’s a lot of pressure on me,” Olympia said.

Georgia — the topranked female cadet in her weight class in B.C. and Canada — and Olympia were in fine form at the 2016 national championships in Calgary.

Rachel Windhorst has probably been hit harder than most by the Thompson Rivers WolfPack’s travel schedule this season.

The outside hitter, who is in her first season in the Canada West after playing her rookie and sophomore campaigns for the Saint Mary’s Huskies of Atlantic University Sport (AUS), is finding Western Canadian volleyball a different animal than that on the East Coast.

This weekend will mark Windhorst’s 15th and 16th regularseason matches for the WolfPack, while an entire campaign in the AUS is just 17 games.

And, with three AUS teams in Halifax, two in New Brunswick and one in Newfoundland, a season playing all 12 Canada West teams spread across three time zones is nothing like she’s used to.

“It’s pretty different because in the Canada West, we always play games on Fridays and Saturdays, whereas in the AUS, maybe you have a Wednesday game, a Sunday game and you never have back-toback games,” Windhorst told KTW. “In the Canada West, it’s a little more tiring in that way,

because it’s always you have to rebound next day, next day, next day, whereas in the AUS, maybe you have a few days off between games.

“But you drove everywhere in the AUS, whereas here [there’s] more flying, which is, in a way, nicer.”

The WolfPack (6-8) will be home to the Regina Cougars (3-13) tonight and tomorrow, two of five matches to be played at the TCC in the season’s second half.

Action begins at 6 p.m. tonight and 5 p.m. tomorrow.

Playing at the Tournament Capital Centre this weekend might feel a little unfamiliar for the Wolves. Thompson Rivers hasn’t played a regular-season match in Kamloops since a Nov. 19 loss to the UBC Thunderbirds.

Since then, the club has been to Edmonton, Calgary and Langley and sat through a Christmas break and two bye weekends.

So, while the pains of the regular season have been especially difficult for Windhorst, the entire team has struggled in one way or another.

“Being on the road kind of drains us a bit. It’s good to be back,” rookie setter Abby Spratt said.

“It has been a while, but I think these last couple weeks we’ve really found our mojo — especially against Trinity [Western Spartans].

I think our team is starting to come out of that shell and it’s good to get back into the last couple weeks of the season.”

The relief of returning home might be offset by the dangers of playing a team like the Cougars.

While Regina ranks 12th in the 13-team Canada West, expecting to win based on an opponent’s record can be a fatal mistake.

“I guess, in a sense, that’s the million-dollar question,” WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm said when asked how to avoid overconfidence heading into the weekend against Regina.

“Hopefully, our girls learned some lessons. Mount Royal dropped one against them [Regina] after easily winning the first night, winning the first two sets on the second night, then Regina came back and beat them three straight.

“They practise as much as we do. I think sometimes people forget that. ‘Oh, they have three wins.’ But they’re in the gym the same amount of time as us, so they can do some things well.”

It’s looking a lot like a playoff preview.

The Kamloops Storm (18-15-1-5) and the 100 Mile House Wranglers (21-9-3-5) are set to clash in a home-and-home series this weekend and, with both clubs in the final stretch of the regular season, it’s starting to look a lot like a preview to a Doug Birks divisional semifinal.

“We’ve been looking at situations for the last month from that perspective,” head coach Ed Patterson told KTW. “It’s just a matter of getting some guys back healthy and getting the right mentality in our dressing room.

Sometimes, you win some games, you lose some games . . . we don’t care where we start, if it’s home, away, second, third or whatever, we’re just looking at the playoffs as [part of] our season.”

Puck drop at Memorial Arena tonight is 7:35 p.m.

The Storm are third in the Doug Birks Division, eight points back of the Wranglers and 11 behind the division-leading Chase Heat (25-10-1-2).

With eight games remaining for Kamloops on the 2017-2018 season slate, it’s hard to imagine the club entering the playoffs as anything but the No. 3 seed.

The same goes for the

fourth-place Revelstoke Grizzlies (16-21-0-1) who, nine points behind the Storm, seemed destined for a playoff battle against the eventual division leaders.

But much is still up for grabs between the Wranglers and the Heat.

Just three points separated the clubs in their fight for No. 1 heading into tonight.

The result will weigh heavily on the Storm’s fortunes. Against 100 Mile House this season, Kamloops has three wins and three losses, one of each result coming in overtime. Each club has scored 18 goals in the head-to-head matchup.

Against the Heat, however, the numbers aren’t quite as rosy.

Kamloops has won just twice in seven meetings against Chase this season and has been outscored 29 to 21.

They lost to the Heat on Wednesday night, 2-1.

Still, Patterson said he has no preference for opponent.

In the locker room, players are keeping an eye on the standings.

“You totally look at who’s in front of you and who you can expect to play,” said captain Keaton Gordon, before turning his attention to potential playoff series against the Wranglers or the Heat.

“I think either team is beatable if we stick to our game plan.”

ward in 2017. Entering tonight’s action, they have lost six of their last 10 games and have just one win in the new year.

Part of the problem is the club’s abysmal road record — at 7-8-05, it hasn’t found much success away from Memorial Arena at any point this season and, with six of nine January games on the road, it has been a tough month.

“We just need to follow our game plan a little bit better and I think pucks will start going our way,” Gordon said.

“You’ve got to bear down in your defensive zone and stick to the gameplan on getting the puck out. Our breakouts need to be executed.

Stuff like that needs to be perfected before playoffs.”

As has been the case all season, experience has factored into results.

Gordon said last year’s Storm roster — which was in much the same position in January — was more consistent because of its veteran presence. This year’s group, on the other hand, might be more talented.

He’s hoping they can use this weekend to get a leg up on a potential post-season opponent.

“You look at the weaker players on teams and you try to expose them,” he said.

“If we can continue to play well together, I think we’ll go far in the playoffs.”

“I love having Georgia in the same city, to be able to go to tournaments with her,” Olympia said. “We can’t really train together. I’m a lot heavier. But we warm up at tournaments.”

Finding training partners in Kamloops similar in gender, age and size is next to impossible, said Olympia, noting the female wrestlers at Westsyde are “like a billion pounds” lighter than her.

“Last year, I trained all day every day with a Grade 12 guy,” Georgia said. “He was a lot better than me and he beat me every day, but it just made me better.”

The beatdowns certainly have paid off for Georgia, an avid golfer who will also have decisions to make when done with high school.

“I was thinking about getting a full-ride golf scholarship to Arizona State, but I’ve also had people look at me for wrestling,” she said.

Both girls plan to attend provincials and nationals, but were unsure about attending worlds, if they were to qualify. That’s an expensive trip.

For now, they’ll continue to grapple in dingy wrestling rooms that smell of sweat, tangling with ogre-odoured older boys, readying themselves for the gold hunt in Salmon Arm. “I just hope I’ll be able to keep up with it,” Olympia said.

“It does suck when it gets to be

too much because I know I love wrestling, no matter what, and it’s hard when it gets to be more than just purely wrestling, when everything else takes over.”

They will undergo body measurements prior to the start of the camp and be tested in speed, power, strength and endurance in front of coaches and officials from national sport organizations.

mance benchmarks will be invited to the RBC Training Ground Main Final in Richmond at the Olympic Oval on March 4.

The best of the best may receive financial support toward training and competition programs for up to three years and the winner of the B.C. regional final will be awarded a trip to the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

NEW YORK — Injuries in the NFL decreased this season, including concussions.

Emphasizing players are doing more self-reporting of head injuries, the league released data yesterday that show overall concussions for the pre-season and regular season were down from 275 in 2015 to 244 in 2016. That includes a drop of 16 in regular-season games to 167.

The 275 diagnosed concussions in 2015 were a high over the last five years and were an increase of 69 over the previous season. But the NFL enhanced its detection and examination protocols in that span.

“What we have to account for, too, are the additional protocols involved and the people involved in recognizing the injuries,’’ NFL executive Jeff Miller said.

“We have seen a significant culture change on those points [players themselves or teammates identifying what they suspect could be head injuries].

“The point of all of this . . . is the effort to identify the con-

cussions when they happen so players can get the treatment as quickly and comprehensively as they can. That is why we spend so much time on the protocols.’’

Dr. Robert Heyer, president of the NFL Physicians Society and team internist for the Carolina Panthers, cited the players’ willingness to report injuries as making a major difference in the numbers.

“I have been a team physician 22 years and in the past three years I think we’ve seen a cultural change regarding concussions,’’ Heyer said.

“As result of ongoing education, players are more likely to speak up if they believe they might have a concussion. I know what we are doing is making a difference, but we must continue to do more.’’

One unaffiliated neurological consultant working games is Dr. Mitchel Berger. His interactions with players on the sidelines have changed, he said.

“When we started the program, there was a significant amount of resistance from the players in terms of just being evaluated,’’ Berger said.

“But now, I would say uniformly this past season, none of

the players ever resisted. They are much, much more aware of the whole concussion situation and want to actively be engaged in the interview process on the sideline as well as in the locker room. They really are much more aware of, and interested in, their safety.’’

A rule change regarding player safety of moving the ball to the 25-yard line on touchbacks had little effect on diminishing concussions, with a drop from 20 to 17. That information will be presented to the league’s competition committee for evaluation, Miller said.

The NFL and players’ association worked with the health information research company QuintilesIMS in gathering the data.

The statistics also showed decreases in knee injuries from 2015-2016. Also of note was no conclusive evidence of more injuries on Thursday night games. The injury rate was less than games played Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

“Injuries don’t increase when teams have a shorter preparation time,’’ said Christina Mack, a director with Quintiles.

Adam Bighill won’t change the approach that made him a CFL star when he wears the jersey of the NFL’s New Orleans Saints.

The 5-foot-10, 230-pound linebacker will get his first NFL opportunity after signing a three-year deal with the Saints earlier this month. The former Central Washington star was bypassed in the league’s 2011 draft and instead signed with the B.C. Lions.

Under-sized by NFL standards, Bighill adjusted quickly to Canadian football, becoming a starter as a rookie.

He missed only nine games with B.C., and just three after the 2011 season, when the Lions won the Grey Cup. “I don’t see [cracking the Saints’ roster] too much different than if I were to evaluate myself up here,’’ Bighill said.

“Just be consistent, have trust in what you’re going to do on the field every snap and build trust within the coaching staff.

“It’s not really about making sure you get it right, it’s all about knowing where you’re going and are they going to be able to stop you? They [Saints coaches] will learn I’m going to give them everything I’ve got. Football is my life and I take it very seriously.’’

Bighill had six productive seasons with B.C., registering 489 tackles and 33 sacks in 99 games. Last year, he and fellow linebacker Solomon Elimimian became the first teammates to register 100 or more tackles in the same season.

“I’m going to miss [Elimimian], my teammates and the coaches and the friends I’ve made throughout the CFL,’’ he said.

“Leaving a legacy is something I really wanted to do, but at the same time, you realize you can only play this game for so long.

“This is really going to be the best opportunity for me and my family.’’

Bighill admits facing many challenges early in his CFL career. But six years later, he feels he’s better equipped now to battle for an NFL position than he was after university.

“When you’re playing professional football in your rookie year, things are moving pretty fast,’’ he said.

“Everything is new, you’ve never seen these things before, you’re used to playing [American] football and you come up here, more or less, to a completely different game.

“I’d say throughout my six years here, I’ve expanded my football knowledge immensely. The game is so much slower now, my eyes are able to see more and I can process more even before the snap. And when that happens for a player, it’s a big advantage.’’

Bighill doesn’t see encountering any difficulties having to now revert to American football.

“I think it’ll be easier going back just because of the cerebralness you need for the CFL game,’’ Bighill said.

“With receivers moving around, running backs getting out of the backfield, it [Canadian football] is the most organized chaos, that’s the best way I could put it.

“In the NFL, you have one guy that can motion or you’ll have three people move and set themselves, but there’s not a bunch of motion. When people line up, you can, for the most part, get a really good clue of what they’re going to do just based on their alignment.’’

Bighill can also shine on special teams, giving him more opportunities to impress the Saints’ brass.

“Special teams is going to be a huge part of the game,’’ he said.

“Even your starting linebackers down there are on one or two special teams.

“I think my athleticism and explosiveness are going to be a huge part of what I’m doing.’’

Obituaries & In Memoriam Erik Linde Gundersen March 31, 1925 – January 13, 2017

Erik was born on March 31, 1925 in Denmark, coming to Canada at an early age of 14 looking for work. Erik drove logging truck and helped with the family owned Sportsman Restaurant in Clearwater, BC. When he retired from that he sold the property on Dutch Lake and moved to Barriere.

He split his time being a commissionaire at the R.C.M.P. Detachment and looking after the family home.

Erik passed away peacefully at Royal Inland Hospital the morning of January 13, 2017 at the age of 91 years. He is survived by his wife Leona now residing in Pine Grove Care Home and his sons Ron and Rick Gundersen of Calgary and step-children Janet (Vic) of Kamloops, Dave (Holly) of Saanichton, Arthur (Carolyn) of Abbotsford, Danny (Doreen) of Mayne Island and Kathy (Stephen) of North Saanichton.

The family would like to give special thanks to Darren Underhill and Teresa Kirkwood for all the years of friendship and unrelenting help.

Doreen Stittle (Eckhart) On January 18, 2017, at Royal Inland Hospital, Doreen Stittle, mom, closed her eyes and gently gave her last breath. This world has lost a beautiful soul, but rest assured that elsewhere a grand reunion is taking place.

Doreen was predeceased by her loving husband Wilfred Stittle and their 1st born child Lydian, her parents Earl and Lillian Eckhart, her sisters Merle Donchi and Blanche (Don) McKenzie and her brother Billy.

Family remaining here to fondly remember her, are sons Lyle (Joanne) Stittle, Les (Carmel) Stittle and Len (Deb) Stittle and daughter Lorann (Dan) Makortoff. Also missing her greatly are her grandchildren Lindsay (Mike), Lisa (Doug), Lee, Jesse (Tessa), Jaret, Cole (Holly-Rose), Tyler (Melinda), Rylan, Drew (Michelle) and Dustyn; great-grandchildren Theron, Logan, Lochlan, Kelton, Kenzie, Abbey, Emilee and Aurora. Also left to cherish her memory are her siblings, Darell (Marie) Eckhart, Lorne (Cathy) Eckhart, Bruce (Sharon) Eckhart, brother-in-law Bernard Donchi, sister-in-law Betty Petersen, also many nieces, nephews and close friends.

Doreen was born May 15, 1931 in Willowbrook, Saskatchewan. She came out to BC with her family and settled in Heffley Creek. She met her love and married Wilfred (Bob) on July 12, 1952. They resided in Heffley Creek and raised their family. Doreen was a member of the Ladies Social Club. Bob and Doreen were life time members of the HCCC and OAP Club. They contributed many hours helping and volunteering at the Heffley Creek Hall.

All the family would like to extend a big thank you to the staff at RlH 3 West , Dr. Ben Anders and Tammy for all your help with mom. Doreen wanted to thank the staff at The Hamlets at Westsyde. This was her home for the last six years, thank you for keeping her comfortable and safe.

Bob (Robert) James Hubbard It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Bob Hubbard in Matanza, Cuba on January 19th, at the age of 73. He is survived by Jan, his wife of 48 years, daughter Shannon, son Jamie (Julie), grandchildren Madison and Nicolas, of Kamloops, sister Pat (Paul) Leloup of Richmond, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joan and Gerry Sheanh of Chilliwack, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Harry and Dorothea Hubbard of Kelowna, sister and brother-inlaw Aileen and Ken Dallas of Langley, niece Sheila Dallas, in-laws Walter and Jean Dyke and brother-in-law Bradley Dyke of Richmond.

Bob was born in Vancouver and raised and attended school in Richmond.

His first job was jockeying cars for Tilden Rent-a-Car, which he enjoyed because he got to drive hot cars. Following brief employment with Esso, he and a partner purchased a used Hayes cab-over truck and hauled loads around the province for British Pacific. While this endeavor only lasted a year he had many stories to tell of his adventures. In 1967, he decided to enroll in a first aid program and that was the beginning of his career in the ambulance service. Starting with Richmond Ambulance as a driver and attendant and ending with the BC Ambulance Service 39 years later in Kamloops in Dispatch Quality Improvement. In retirement, his interests included travel, photography, geocaching, fishing and researching his family ancestry.

Bob passed away while enjoying a wonderful vacation in Varadero, Cuba with his wife and daughter.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, February 3, 2017 at Schoening Funeral Service, 513 Seymour Street, Kamloops. Reception to follow.

John was predeceased by his wife Janet Yanchuk, father and mother Harry and Mary Yanchuk, brothers Joseph Yanchuk and Mathew Yanchuk, nephew Daniel Kazakoff, father-in-law and mother-in-law Jack and Mary Derraugh.

Dad was born on July 20, 1936 in West Bend, Saskatchewan and at the age of three the family moved to Vancouver. There young John enjoyed many sports but hockey was his passion. Hockey took Dad to many teams including the Prince Albert Mintos, Humbolt Indians, Clinton Comets, New Westminster Royals and the Victoria Cougars. It was in Victoria one evening, at a party held by Cougars boosters that John met Janet, fell head over heels in love and soon the two where married. In the spring of 1959, Dad signed a contract with the Brighton Tigers of the English National League and a short time later John, Janet and newborn son Harry boarded a Cunard steamship bound for England. The following year

Weller sent an email out last week listing some other links to the TNRD region, including Monster Trucks, which was released earlier this

month; Power Rangers: It’s Morphin Time, which will be released in March; Tomato Red, which will open at the Dublin Film Festival next month; and 1491: The Untold Story of the Americas Before Christopher Columbus, a TV mini-series that

will be broadcast on APTN. Weller has launched a new website and will be working on expanding crew development because having local people who can work on productions helps promote the area.

An interactive map on the website speaks to the popularity of the city and area for films, with icons marking where films, TV series, documentaries, music videos and commercials have been filmed

through the years.

Weller said the commission has been “really, really, really busy.”

Many who opt for the area do so because of the landscape.

Often, the scenery becomes as important a character as the actors, she said.

Other times, it’s because of the uniqueness of Kamloops.

Power Rangers chose the site for some scenes because it worked in the goal of creating the

small town of Angel Grove, Calif., where the superteens of the title live.

In the trailer alone for the movie, docks in the South Thompson River, Zacks Coffees, Teas and Gifts on Victoria Street, part of the Third Avenue streetscape and the exterior of the Continental Barber Shop can be seen, along with the iconic landscape and Mount Paul.

tell if the new U.S. president’s America First edict has any impact on film production in Canada but, laughing, she noted “California wants to leave [the U.S.] and that’s where the big companies are.”

She noted when actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor of that state, there was a bit of a dip in filming projects heading to Canada “but it’s hard to say right now. It’s all about the economy.”

onReal has been booed offstage, dislocated his shoulder while performing and received two Juno nominations — but it all pales in comparison to paving highway between Kamloops and Merritt.

“It was like the hardest job I’ve ever done,” he said.

The hip hop artist was working construction and living in the River City at the time, having left his hometown of Vernon after high school to make his way toward the Lower Mainland. From there, he would earn an audioengineering diploma, perform for handfuls of people at open-mic jams and, eventually, launch his hip hop career.

“You kind of just build yourself organically,” said Aaron Hoffman, who goes by the stage name SonReal.

KTW caught up with

Hoffman in Los Angeles by telephone. These days, the 31-year-old splits his time between the City of Angels and Vancouver, but still heads back to Vernon to visit his mom and step-dad. He’s looking forward to his next trip back to meet their new puppy.

“I was just there over the Christmas holidays,” he said.

Hoffman is recovering from shoulder surgery six months ago, the result of a skateboarding accident at age 17 that led to a series of dislocations over the years — including on stage and while shooting a music video.

“This week and last week is the first week I’ve been doing strength training,” he said.

“First time I feel really good.”

Hoffman will be back in Kamloops to perform at CJs Nightclub on Saturday, Feb. 4, a show he says will be a fun and energetic experience filled with heart.

“It’s going to be epic,” he said.

He’s promoting his latest

release, the five-song EP The Name, before his new album debuts this summer. He also just dropped a music video for the track No Warm Up, which tells of his early years rapping in the Okanagan.

Hoffman laughed when asked about lyrics referencing Kelowna: “I used to drive to Kelowna, get booed like a f--in’ loner; ‘Cause I was scared of myself and I showed it to everybody.”

He got a kick out of a Dutch producer, curious about the Little Apple reference, asking: “What is a Kelowna?”

“Only people from the Okanagan, maybe Vancouver, would know what Kelowna is, where Kelowna is,” he said.

Those lyrics speak to a time Hoffman was “just so bad.”

“I’m not one of those naturally gifted people,” he said. “I was like the worst rapper then.

I remember getting booed off stage many times.”

On one occasion, he recalled wearing a do-rag and oversized baseball cap,

Highlights from Sun Peaks wine festival

THE NAME SonReal is Aaron Hoffman’s stage name, one he came up with when he first started rapping at age 15 in Vernon. He wanted to sound like an East Coast hip hop artist.

“I wanted a name that sounded like I was from New York,” he said.

The only thing he got right, he said, was not giving up.

“Ultimately, I think it’s just a long journey,” he said, noting the booing stage is over.

Reflecting on his career so far — he has released six albums and EPs and a number of mixtapes and was nominated for Junos for rap recording of the year twice for The Closers and Everywhere We Go — Hoffman echoes that hardworking sentiment.

“I feel bad for artists who get a huge hit or huge single,” he said. “I’ve spent years and years and years being on stage and trying to figure it out.”

He said his new album will feature a different style of music than fans have come to know, with a lot more singing and instrumentals, even “straight up ukulele stuff.’

“I’m excited to show people a new chapter,” he said.

Since wine tasting and good taste are subjective, there are no right answers about what wine you should buy and what you will like. If you find someone with whom you agree in their choices of grape, vintage and year, then that’s a good wine critic for you. So, with that in mind, I’ll share the wines I think are worth trying this year and you can decide if it’s worth taking a crack at them.

I attended a few events at the Okanagan Winter Wine Festival at Sun Peaks this month and, just like other wine festivals I have been to, I left with no better idea of what wine to buy.

I prefer to attend smaller guided events at these festivals. The larger venues and tastings are fun, too, but I rarely walk away with a must-buy list.

And, really, after the first few booths, what’s the point of keeping track? By that time, your judgment is probably in no better shape than your lipstick.

After a decade of seminars and tastings and guided pairings, I am happy to report more research is required. Darn it, I’ll just have to keep going.

In case you didn’t make it up the mountain, but want to indulge in a few highlights from B.C. wineries this year, I compiled a list of some of the bettercrafted varieties I tried.

Festivals and tastings are a great way to try new wines, especially BC VQA wines that may be tricky to come across due to the relatively small lots our wineries produce each year.

uthor Elma Schemenauer is fascinated by history, but even more so by the mysterious quirks of Canada’s past.

After years of publishing about the bygone times of the country’s cities, the teacher turned writer has, in the pages of her 77th book, recounted some anecdotes that stuck with her through her career.

YesterCanada: Historical Tales of Mystery and Adventure features 30 true stories from as early as the 1200s, collected during her many years of research while working for a publishing house in Toronto.

“I was always interested in the human interest aspects of the history, not just the names and dates and the main politicians” Schemenauer said.

“I was always looking for the human

angle and the mystery and adventure. I was sort of not really a hardcore history writer because I was more interested in that kind of thing.”

The Saskatchewan native now resides in Kamloops and included a couple of the city’s stories in her latest release — how Robert Service once worked in a bank at the corner of First Avenue and Victoria Street, and the strange story that inspired him to write the famous poem The Cremation of Sam McGee. Also included is the tale behind the infamous Cariboo

camel herd.

Frank Laumeister came up with the idea to bring camels to the Cariboo in 1862 to help transport miners’ supplies to the goldfields, a plan which ultimately failed.

But Schemenauer highlights Laumeister’s attempt to wash the camels with perfumed water to cover their scent since the mules, horses and oxen would stampede whenever they caught the odour.

Other chapters include the mystery of the Vancouver-based ship Baychimo that went missing in the arctic but was spotted roaming the icy waters for many years afterward — it should be impossible, sailors say — and the perplexing chronology behind the disappearance of Canadian painter Tom Thomson.

“For years and years, I kept following the stories because I was interested in them and they develop as you go

along,” Schemenauer said. “I would hear them through other things and then I would follow them up. I did a lot of research, in some cases I actually interviewed people who were involved in the stories. In some cases, these people were still available.”

Schemenauer will be talking about YesterCanada and how authors capture a readers’ interest at an upcoming meeting of the Kamloopsbased Interior Authors Group, taking place on Feb. 9, at 6:30 p.m. at Chartwell Ridgepoint, 1789 Primrose Crt. Schemenauer’s book, as well as the works of other local authors, will be for sale at Royal Inland Hospital near the gift shop on Feb. 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

YesterCanada is also available locally at the Kamloops Art Gallery, The Book Place, St. Joseph’s Christian Book and Gift Supply and Legends.

eter Huang’s father has two desires in life: to assimilate his family as thoroughly as possible into their small, mostlywhite Ontario town, and to have a son.

But, in Kim Fu’s debut novel, For Today I Am A Boy, reality is more complex. Banning the Chinese language and culture from the Huang’s home can’t erase the family’s firstgeneration immigrant status. And, though the elder Huang has other expectations, Peter realizes she is really a girl.

Fu, originally from Vancouver and now living in Seattle, will read from her novel and poetry collection on Wednesday at the Kamloops Library’s downtown branch, 465 Victoria St., from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Vutev, Olds among winners at annual Mayor’s Gala for the Arts Kamloops Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Cvetozar Vutev was named artist of the year at the annual Mayor’s Award for the Arts gala on the weekend.

Vutev teaches violin, viola, chamber music and string orchestra with the Kamloops Symphony Music School, has also taught with the Kamloops Interior Summer School of Music, is first violist with the Okanagan Symphony and concertmaster for the Opera Kelowna Orchestra.

Also nominated were Cathi Marshall and Andrew Cooper.

Madison Olds won the award for emerging artist and was competing with herself as her band Bees and the

by Jan. 30 Provincial grants for local festivals Community arts and cultural organizations have until Jan. 30 to apply for provincial grants to stage local festivals in the coming year.

The grants are administered by the B.C. Arts Council and help cover fees of professional artists and technicians hired for local festivals. The council uses a peerreviewed adjudication process, with preference given to festivals that showcase B.C. and Canadian artists.

A separate program for youth participation in arts and culture has a grant deadline of Jan. 16.

Exploring Agatha Christie’s Riviera JAMIE ROSS

No seaside town in the south of England is, I think, as attractive as St. Loo — which reminds one forcibly of the Riviera.”

Such is the opening line of Agatha Christie’s Peril at End House.

The thoughts are from Hercule Poirot’s associate, Captain Hastings, the city of St. Loo is actually Torquay in South Devon, and the famous detective and his friend are sitting on the terrace of the Hotel Majestic, high on a headland, overlooking the sea.

My wife and I sit on the terrace of the Imperial Hotel taking in the same magnificent coastal view, whilst enjoying a Devon cream tea, an afternoon ritual which includes a rather surprising delicious pastry, a mixture of jam and clotted cream on a tasty scone.

The Majestic and Imperial are actually the same place.

We arrived in Torquay by train on a pleasant September afternoon and booked in at the Grand Hotel next door to the station.

The case we had undertaken was to snoop around this picturesque harbour town looking for clues about Christie’s life here.

Torquay was her birthplace in 1890 and, today, Sept. 15, was her birthday, a day when people travel from far and near to celebrate her legacy at the Agatha

Here, in South Devon on the sea, Christie spent many of the most important chapters of her life; the grand resorts, landmarks and local people inspired her writing, and provided a familiar backdrop

to her fictional world.

Christie honeymooned with Archie Christie at The Grand Hotel, where we will spend the first few days of our visit, and she socialized at the Imperial Hotel, where we would settle for our

final nights.

The heart of Torquay arcs around the town’s horseshoe harbour between the two prestigious hotels.

This stretch is also known as the Agatha Christie Mile, so we set off on a gentle stroll

along the seafront, with palm trees and late Victorian architecture on one side and the harbour on the other.

We wind our way past ancient Torre Abbey and Christie’s garden of poisonous plants to the Royal

Pavilion, a once-elegant concert hall, where Archie Christie had proposed to Agatha in 1913, and out onto Princess Pier, where she had spent countless evenings roller-skating by the sea.

The trail skirts Beacon Cove, the site of a near-drowning for teenage Agatha, and then climbs up to the Imperial.

The next day we hopped aboard the Paignton to Dartmouth Steam Railway for a tour along the spectacular Torbay coast and then inland through the wooded slopes bordering the Dart estuary.

Christie herself enjoyed this journey so much she insisted on Poirot taking it many times.

We jump off our carriage at Greenway Halt and follow a path through the woods to Greenway, Christie’s beautiful holiday home on the banks of the River Dart Greenway is a magical place, with its rich historical interior and wild gardens.

Now run by the National Trust, the house is just as Christie and family left it.

The many rooms of the home are filled with interesting collectables; book manuscripts, her old Remington typewriter and scrapbooks filled with stories and photographs.

Further south along the coast near Bigburyon-Sea, we encounter the mysterious case of the disappearing island.

Well, Burgh Island

doesn’t really vanish; it is just an island at high tide, when a unique water tractor provides access.

At low tide you can wander to the island across the sandy flats.

Christie would frequent the Burgh Island Hotel when it was a private home in the late 1920s.

Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and often shrouded in ominous mists, one can see why the island intrigued the author enough to set two of her mysteries here, Evil Under the Sun and And Then There Were None.

We don’t stay at the charming hotel, afraid perhaps its guests might start dropping off one by one.

If you have the chance, however, at least drop in at the island’s rustic and romantic Pilchard Inn, (established in 1336), for a pint. The coastal region of South Devon has been dubbed the English Riviera, popular because of it balmy climate and seaside location.

Yet it is in its steam trains, disappearing islands, clifftop walks and grand hotels the pervading presence of the Queen of Crime arrests the senses, so much so that you expect to be joined in your rail car, at any time, by a certain moustachioed, egg-headed, Belgian detective.

I once overheard some kids talking about something they did not like: “That (blanks),” they said, using a term made popular by a couple of raunchy late-night TV cartoon characters, a term once considered filthy enough to get kids kicked out of school for uttering.

So, what’s the big deal? Does it really matter, anyway?

Don’t we have more important things to consider than a few naughty and choice words?

In reality, I suppose we could just go along with it.

We could allow the screenplay writ-

ers, sitcom stars and others to colour our language with gutter talk.

Hours spent playing video and computer games by younger folks do not help in cultivating knowledge and skills to master good disciplines of private and public speaking.

The great American preacher of the 1700s, Jonathan Edwards, entered Yale University at age 13, graduated at age 17 and began preaching God’s good words before age 20.

William Pitt the Younger entered Cambridge University at age 14 and was a member of Parliament by age 20, where his unmatched oratory propelled him to the office of prime

minister of England at age 24.

It is true we could probably accomplish a lot more if we would control our tongues and use language for meaningful purposes and not be absorbed in meaningless activities.

Certainly everyone needs some time each day to unwind with conversations and activities that don’t take a lot of brainpower.

But many have made gutter words and other distractions their virtual obsessions.

We could just get over it and stop trying to hold back the tidal wave of vulgar language. After all, they’re just words, except for one little thing — God’s word.

We’d have to drop some of God’s teaching from the Bible.

We’d have to ignore verses like these: “It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret” (Ephesians 5:4).

“Keep your tongue from evil” (Psalm 34:13).

“Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be” (James 3:10).

“You must rid yourselves of . . . filthy language” (Colossians 3:8).

We may not always be able to avoid hearing bad language or taking part in timewasting frivolous activities.

But if we understand that filthy language dishonours God, we’ll begin to

see how important it is that we keep our own words clean.

We will avoid letting ourselves become so conditioned that bad words don’t bother us anymore.

The psalmist David declared that mankind has been made only a “little lower” than God (Psalm 8).

Humans are the vice-regents of God, rulers under God, with noble tasks to do for Him. We all have capacity, as people made in God’s image, to use our creativity and skill to accomplish great things.

So, while we are dawdling away our time speaking colourful words or indulging in meaningless activities, Satan is at his job of subverting God’s

work and plan.

Not only are we accomplishing nothing, but we’re permitting the Lord’s enemy to do his dastardly deeds.

Bottles for moving fund welcomed

A 29-year-old Kamloops woman with cerebral palsy is raising money to move to Toronto.

The woman is seeking bottle donations from the community to help reach her goal of raising $24,000 for the move. The money is needed for all the costs involved, including a moving van, a support worker and expenses related to finding an apartment to rent in Canada’s largest city.

The woman, who asked that her name not be published, has an account established at the South Shore General Grants bottle depot at 1395 Battle St. downtown.

Those who wish to help can donate their bottles to the Moving to Toronto Fund.
