The provincial government is allocating $50 million to immediately hire teachers and improve student supports.

The move is the first the government has officially made after losing a protracted dispute with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation when the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in favour of the union on its right to bargain class-size limits and composition during contract talks.

That ruling, issued in November, restored contract language from 2002 that was removed from the collective agreement by then-education minister Christy Clark.

The funding, announced yesterday by Education Minister Mike Bernier, is for the current school year and represents enough compensation to hire 1,000 teachers.

The past and current chairs of the KamloopsThompson board of education praised the decision and agreed the challenge will be in deciding where to place more teachers.

Denise Harper, whose term as chair ended last month, said the district is also addressing an issue with crowding in many of its schools, noting where to place teachers and support staff will be impacted.

While the district has empty schools, “the trouble is they’re in the wrong place,” she said.

“Heffley, what’s the value in reopening there, for example?”

Board chair Meghan Wade agreed there are “some pressure points on the South Shore part of the district” in terms of finding space.

Wade added the agreement also includes using the new money for hiring non-enrolling teachers who might be brought in to work as a team for a period of time with a student who requires extra attention.

Each school district, in consultation with its union locals, will determine the number of teachers to be hired, as well as specialty teachers that include special-education teachers, speech-language pathologists, behaviourintervention specialists, school psychologists, aboriginal-support teachers, counsellors,

With the dispute still in the justice system during the last round of bargaining between the government and the BCTF, the two parties agreed they would reopen the agreement and renegotiate should the size and composition language be restored by the courts.

Bernier said the two sides are continuing to meet and review the old language, as well as current district-level information on classrooms and compositions.

“These negotiations will determine how to modernize the language so it reflects changes to classrooms that have taken place over the past 15 years,” Bernier said in a press release announcing the money allocation.

The agreement is only between the BCTF and the government. Nothing has been made public on additional money to hire more certified education assistants — formerly know as student- and, later, school-support workers — who are represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

Kamloops Mounties are on the hunt for a group of silent thieves who have been stealthily stealing valuable rims and tires from Tournament Capital trucks, usually leaving the vehicles on blocks.

RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said there have been eight such reports since the start of December, and others stretching back to the fall.

“It is an unusual thing to happen,” she told KTW. “Not unheard of, but definitely unusual.”

Shelkie said the thefts stand out because of their labourintensive nature and the fact they require some significant planning.

“Most thefts are crimes of opportunity, where the car door is open or items have been left in a vehicle — something that doesn’t have a big time

commitment,” she said.

The majority of the thefts have been from Ford pickups, Shelkie said, but one in December involved a GMC truck.

It can cost about $1,000 to outfit such trucks with four tires, not including the additional cost for rims.

Another theft last fall involved a Honda Civic in Aberdeen.

Investigators believe the wheel thefts are being done by the same person or group of people, though she added there is nothing linking them other than their unusual nature.

“This, we believe, has to be more than one person doing it,” Shelkie said.

“And because it’s very labourintensive, these are very motivated thieves. It’s a different level of theft than the guy or girl walking down the street trying car doors.”

“Follow preventative measures and don’t make it easy for them to remove the tires from your vehicle.”

Kamloops Mounties offer the following tips to help combat such crimes: • Always park in a garage if you have one; • If no garage is available, park in an area with plenty of traffic and lighting to deter thieves; • Install a car alarm that includes sensors attached to wheels; • Turn your wheels when parking. This makes the wheels harder to remove because they get stuck in the wheel well.

• Use wheel locks on each wheel. The locks fit on each wheel and make the lug nuts difficult to remove without a key.

Anybody with information on the identity of the wheel thief or thieves is asked to contact police at 250-828-3000.

Twice-convicted of assault, man avoids jail for breach TIM PETRUK

A former junior hockey player who was twice given breaks by judges after unleashing unprovoked steroidinduced beatings in 2015 has again avoided jail, this time after breaching his house arrest three separate times on Boxing Day. Isaac Willard pleaded guilty in Kamloops provincial court on Tuesday to breaching his conditional sentence order.

The 24-year-old Chase man was placed on a six-month house arrest term in October after pleading guilty to two counts of assault causing bodily harm stemming from attacks on relatives on May 2, 2015 — one of which forced his father to undergo reconstructive facial surgery and remain in hospital for more than a month.

Court heard the event happened at random and bore striking similarities to a beating Willard levelled on his thengirlfriend two weeks earlier.

In that case, Willard and his

then-girlfriend were walking home from a Chase pub when he grabbed her by the hair, forced her to the ground and began punching her in the face and kicking her in the ribs A neighbour heard screaming and called 911.

The woman was left with injuries to her nose and ear, as well as several broken teeth.

Later in 2015, he pleaded guilty to charges stemming from that attack and was placed on 75 days of house arrest and ordered to pay more than $6,000 in restitution to cover his ex’s dental bills.

Court has previously heard Willard’s rage stemmed from a combination of steroids and alcohol. He claims to have been sober since a short time after the incidents.

On Boxing Day, court heard, Willard violated his house arrest three times — once by being 20 minutes late for his 2 p.m. curfew and again for halfhour excursions later in the evening.

He is wearing an electronicmonitoring bracelet as part of his house arrest.

Crown prosecutor Catriona Elliott asked Kamloops provincial court Judge Roy Dickey to send Willard to jail for a month as a result of the breach.

Defence lawyer Don Campbell, however, pointed out Willard had never before breached a court-ordered condition.

Campbell said Willard was late because his vehicle was undergoing repairs.

He said the second breach was a trip to the store to get something for a sick uncle and the third was to shovel snow.

“You’re on the electronicmonitoring program,” Dickey told Willard. “If you breach your curfew, I’m not sure how you think you’re going to get away with it.”

But Dickey stopped short of punishing Willard.

“I’m satisfied there are exceptional circumstances in this case,” he said. “I’m not going to take any action.”

Between 2009 and 2012, Willard played for the Chase Heat and the Chase Chiefs in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

A North Thompson woman who was wounded by police in a 2014 shooting during which Mounties killed her father is set to return to court next week.

Shane Buehler’s five-day preliminary inquiry is slated to get underway in

Valemount provincial court on Monday.

Buehler is facing seven charges, including three relating to firearms, stemming from a series of incidents more than two years ago.

On Sept. 17, 2014, police converged on a remote cabin near Valemount, where Buehler and her father had been living.

Buehler’s father was wanted on a warrant after missing court and police knew him to be armed, according to a statement from B.C.’s criminal justice branch.

In the course of his arrest, John Robert Buehler was shot and killed. Shane Buehler was shot and suffered serious injuries, but has since recovered.

In October, the Crown announced the four RCMP officers involved in the shooting would not be charged.

One of Shanna Buehler’s charges — pointing a firearm — is related directly to the Sept. 17, 2014, shooting.

The others date to a separate arrest earlier in September.

Police are warning lazy snowmobilers in Sun Peaks to stay off public roads.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Doug Aird said Kamloops Mounties are investigating five reported incidents of snow machines being operated illegally on streets in the mountain village.

“In each case, owners are not trailering their machines to designated trails and are, in fact, driving them down municipal streets,” he said.

“Police advise not only is this dangerous, but it is illegal.”

Mounties want snowmobilers to stay off the roads and on trails.

Aird said snowmobilers caught on public roads could face stiff sanctions, including a $598 fine for driving with no insurance.

Aird also warned snowmobilers to stay off walking trails and the Sun Peaks Golf Course.

A man who was sentenced to spend more than six years in a federal prison after dragging a man to death beneath his car is back behind bars in Kamloops facing multiple charges, including an allegation he robbed a man at a downtown bank machine.

George Nicholas Young is

facing one charge of robbery and additional allegations of assault and failing to appear, as well as two driving charges.

The 36-year-old was arrested on Jan. 1 after allegedly robbing a man of a large amount of cash at the CIBC ATM on Victoria Street, according to police.

Young’s assault charge dates back to Halloween 2016 and the circumstances have not been made public.

In 2011, Young was sentenced to six-and-a-half years behind bars after pleading guilty to criminal negligence causing death. In the early-morning hours of New Year’s Day 2010, Young ran over and dragged to death an acquaintance, Joel Reimer, after leaving a house party in Kelowna.

Young is due back in Kamloops provincial court on Jan. 12.

DNA testing nabs burglar A serial break-in artist will spend the next 18 months behind bars after a drop of his blood left on a couch led to a DNA match — twoand-a-half years after he burgled a North Kamloops home.

Adam Douglas Hibbert, 25, pleaded guilty in Kamloops provincial court yesterday to break-and-enter.

Crown prosecutor Laura Drake said the charge stems from

an incident that was reported to police on April 15, 2014.

On that day, court heard, a woman was home sick at her house on Nicolani Drive when she ignored knocks on her front and back doors. When she heard someone attempting to get into the house, she went to investigate.

“The man fled and she chased him and actually got close enough to grab him by

the hand, but he got away,” Drake said.

The only thing missing was an iPod, court heard, but the woman noticed a few drops of blood on a white couch near the window through which the burglar had entered.

That blood was collected by police and sent for analysis, but results took more than two years to come back.

Drake said the delay was regrettable.

“The DNA report in this matter was not completed until some years after it was submitted,” she said.

Hibbert, who has more than 15 convictions for break-andenter, was charged and arrested in October.

In addition to the 18-month jail sentence, Hibbert was handed an additional month behind bars for a failing to comply conviction.

THE HOT AND NOT OF THE WEEK Kamloops This Week looks at the stories of the week — the good, the bad and all in-between:

HOT: Housing values (and prices) in Kamloops and beyond.

Homeowners received their assessment notices in the mail this week and many likely felt their eyes popping out just a bit more than usual.

While most Kamloops properties will see values rise between five and 10 per cent, that is more than in past years as the city’s realestate market remains strong.

Those five to 10 per cent increases in value are solid, but pale in comparison to some of the skyrocketing figures in the Lower Mainland, where assessment hikes of 30, 40 and 50 per cent are not uncommon.

Such numbers are great if one is selling; not so great come July, when property-tax bills are due.

NOT: Mother Nature’s decision to bless Kamloops with its second Arctic chill of the fall-winter season — and the fact this latest deep freeze has coincided with the peak of the influenza season.

Baby, it’s damn cold outside and will remain so for the foreseeable future as Kamloops experiences an old-fashioned winter.

All that cold means we are spending more time indoors, close to one another, leading to the spread of the flu virus, which is hitting the Tournament Capital hard.

Residential-care homes are reporting outbreaks in which the flu has contributed to a number of deaths, while workplaces and classrooms are a bit less crowded these days.

If you are not sick, count your blessings and keep washing your hands.

If you are ill, do everyone a favour and stay home.

Smile — spring is only 74 days away.

Patience is their virtue

I

n January 2014, 13 months after teenager CJ Fowler was murdered in Kamloops, police announced an arrest.

In custody was Fowler’s boyfriend at the time of her slaying, 24-year-old Damien Taylor, who was later convicted of second-degree murder and remains behind bars to this day.

To arrest a killer within 13 months of a murder is fast police work when the death is not as clear-cut as a domestic dispute in which the perpetrator’s identity is known.

Yet, in the months leading to Taylor’s arrest, Kamloops Mounties were being criticized from various quarters, most notably from activists who erroneously linked Fowler’s death to the unsolved Highway of Tears deaths and the call for a national inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.

At the time of Taylor’s arrest, I wrote a column that included these paragraphs: “Critics often point to the fact Mounties say virtually nothing when asked by media for updates on a murder file.

“Police will always note the investigation is active, but will decline to comment further, noting detectives are working on it day and night.

“It almost always works this way and is often followed by a news conference to announce an arrest.”

I am reminded of that misplaced criticism as we follow the tragic case involving Jennifer Gatey, the 16-year-old Aberdeen girl who was killed on Nov. 4 in a hit-and-run on Pacific Way. All we know so far is that Gatey was struck and killed as she went to catch a bus.

MUSINGS It was dark, about dinertime.

Police later released blurry images, taken from residential security video, of what appears to be a dark-coloured Jeep driving in the area at the time Gatey was struck and killed.

Three days after her death, police seized a black Jeep from a Dufferin home. The Jeep appeared to have minor damage to its driver’s side front end.

The latest story on the case appeared in yesterday’s edition of KTW and is online at kamloopsthisweek.com. The only “news” is that the Jeep remains in police custody as officials await forensic tests to be done.

Still we have critics online accusing Mounties of not doing their job, of “taking too long” to make an arrest, of “blundering” the investigation.

We in the media have been critical of the police in other areas, namely the RCMP’s sudden refusal to name victims of crimes and accidents and its occasional refusal to confirm or explain what has happened in high-profile operations witnessed by many in the public.

Such criticism is warranted.

But to cry incompetence in a

case that is only two months old is seriously offside.

Obviously, police have a suspect in the death of Gatey, namely the owner of the Jeep (or the person they believe was driving it when Gatey was killed).

Since the Mounties have confirmed there are no other vehicles being pursued, and since they are holding on to the Jeep 60-plus days after the hit-and-run, it stands to reason investigators are not concerned another possible perpetrator is getting away.

If police believe the Jeep is indeed the vehicle involved, there is no need to rush the case. On the contrary, it makes sense to go slow, methodically, and ensure the case is as airtight as possible if and when Crown approves charges.

I am sure police are keeping the Gatey family up to date. As for the public and media, I would argue Mounties have been as forthcoming as possible under the circumstances.

As a journalist who has covered far too many such cases, I am satisfied thus far with the Kamloops RCMP’s responses to our questions and the detachment’s response to the public.

If anything, criticism should be directed at the person who was driving the vehicle that killed a beautiful young girl.

List all the excuses — legal advice, trauma, working on a plea — and none are acceptable.

You are aware you killed a girl.

You have destroyed a family. And, two months later, you have yet to own up to it.

Editor: Every year, we decorate our yard for our grandchildren and the neighbourhood.

This requires a fair amount of time and help as we are seniors. We do it for fun and I love Christmas and all the lights.

Well, it has happened. Prancer and Vixen are gone. With their large red bows around their necks, they seem to have wandered away from our Windsor Avenue home, even with three security cameras watching.

The thief may have felt he or she was bundled up enough or perhaps they simply can’t read the signs, but something will click about their clothing or appearance.

It could take us some time to find those responsible, but in the meantime, if these two small, light-up reindeer have appeared on a street or in a yard and a KTW reader sees them, please return them. If Prancer and Vixen were taken as a prank, please return them, no questions asked. They obviously mean more to us than to the thief. They are old and decrepit, like us.

Karma is a funny thing. It doesn’t happen immediately. Instead, it boils, waiting for the right moment to strike. Will the thief’s moment come before he or she has a chance to do what’s right?

I do not need revenge as karma will be the payback.

Tk’emlups Indian Band Chief Fred Seymour hopes to see BC Transit buses on the reserve within the next two years, but he said it all depends on money.

The band looked at adding transit several years ago, but the service was deemed not cost-effective at the time, with then-chief Shane Gottfriedson skeptical the necessary ridership numbers would materialize.

Seymour, who raised the transit issue during a community-to-community forum with Kamloops city council last month, said conversations with BC Transit about a bus loop that would serve Sun Rivers and other reserve properties are ongoing.

TIB CHIEF Seymour said the loop FRED could also serve businesses SEYMOUR in the Mount Paul Industrial Park.

“We’ll see how feasible it is, the revenue and the costs, if we’re ready for it,” he said.

Seymour estimates it will cost $250,000 for bus service, which the band wants to fund with new revenue.

He wouldn’t comment on what options the band is considering to raise the cash.

“We’re going into strategic planning by the end of February and that’s an issue council is going to discuss,” he said.

eading a nutrition label is one thing — understanding it is another.

Learning to navigate the grocery store’s maze of junk food and preservatives is one of the main goals of MEND, a program offered through the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA that focuses on exercise and nutrition education for families.

(MEND stands for Mind, Exercice, Nutrition, Do It!) Program co-ordinator Kathryn Sharples said demystifying products found in a typical shopper’s grocery basket is an eye-opener for those who participate in the 10-week course.

“Once you learn how to know how much sugar and fat is good in a diet, they actually start to read stuff and are amazed at what they think they are eating that’s OK,” Sharples said, focusing particularly on granola bars, yogurts and cereals.

“There’s a bit of spin doctoring of advertising on there to show you are eating something healthy, but it’s so loaded with sugars and fats.”

Understanding labels is a key component, such as how to identify hidden sugars.

Homebuilders and suppliers are waiting to hear more regarding tariffs on drywall that pushed up the cost of building a new home by thousands of dollars beginning in September For now, higher prices will continue following a ruling by the Canadian International Trade Tribunal this week.

In its decision, the tribunal found American-made drywall dumped at less than normal prices into Western Canada over the past few years have injured the Canadian industry.

The ruling means preliminary duties of up to 276 per cent imposed by the Canada Border Services Agency on imports from the U.S. in September will end, but will be replaced by permanent variable duties on any imports that fall below a floor price established last month.

The preliminary duty “was pretty devastating to homebuilding,” said Matt McCurrach, operations manager for Homex Development Corp. in Kamloops.

“Not just homebuilding, but hospitals, commercial — any new construction,” he said.

“It’s a cost that someone has to pay for.”

The immediate spike in costs following the imposition of the temporary duty in September resulted in an extra $3,000 to $5,000 on some homes,” McCurrach estimated.

Kamloops Home Hardware’s Ryan Kurzac said drywall increases from its supplier increased by 60 per cent after the ruling.

There is uncertainty how the latest ruling and any action from the federal Liberal government will affect pricing.

Until then, he said, “everyone needs to push forward.

“Where or not there’s relief in the next two weeks or two months — it’s something that might come about,” Kurzak said.

“We’re just going day by day.”

Duties were imposed after a dumping complaint by Frenchowned CertainTeed Gypsum Canada, the last drywall manufacturer in Western Canada with plants in Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg, and two gypsum quarries, one in B.C. and one in Manitoba.

The company didn’t respond to a request for comment Wednesday, but Canadian manager Matt Walker has said previ-

ously that its plants and quarries could be closed, at the cost of 200 jobs, if the dumping of U.S. products for as little as half of the price south of the border continues.

It said it has hired 30 new employees since the duties were imposed.

In a separate report also released Wednesday, the tribunal found preliminary duties have been “substantially reducing competition’’ in Western Canada to the detriment of Canada’s economic interests and consumers of drywall.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau requested the accelerated report in October out of concern for the impact of higher prices on consumers, particularly in Fort McMurray, which lost 1,800 single-family homes and dozens of other structures in last spring’s devastating wildfire.

A spokesman said last week the minister will review the tribunal’s decision reasons and recommendations, expected to be published Jan. 19, before determining its next steps.

He declined to say what options are being considered.

Dust suspected in Domtar fire A Domtar official declined to speculate on the cause of a small fire at its Kamloops pulp mill Wednesday night, but initial reports from Kamloops Fire Rescue peg the cause to dust build-up.

Both Domtar’s emergency-response team and Kamloops Fire Rescue crews responded to the blaze, reported at about 8:45 p.m.

Steve Kilmartin, platoon captain with the city department, said it dispatched four trucks and 14 initial responders due to risks of an industrial fire.

Crews used saws to better access the blaze, he said.

“It was a build-up of dust between two metal-clad walls,” Kilmartin said.

“They had to open

it up and apply foam to the fire.”

Domtar spokeswoman Bonny Skene declined to comment on the cause, saying company staff will help determine the factors.

She said the core of the fire in the wall of the power boiler area was less than 25 square feet in size.

Pulp production was not affected and there

were no injuries.

“Both teams worked together to extinguish the fire,” she said. “It was very small.”

Investigators with Kamloops Fire Rescue returned to the site of the fire yesterday morning to better determine the cause.

Crews were on scene Wednesday night for about two hours.

Seven new cars will be parked on Thompson Rivers University’s campus when students return to classes on Monday, courtesy of a car-sharing program.

The small fleet is part of Zipcar, a program that, when based at universities, allows members to access a car for an hour or a week, paying an $8 hourly rate that includes insurance and a gas card, said Jim Gudjonson, director of sustainability at the university.

Zipcar began more than a decade ago with a goal to address the number of vehicles on the roads by providing alternative transportation.

Gudjonson said he expects the

program will appeal to students living in residence who might need a vehicle occasionally.

The program is open to all employees on campus, he said, but any Kamloopsian can apply for it.

Gudjonson said if it’s successful, there’s the possibility of more cars coming to Kamloops and being based at other community locations.

The cars are fuel-efficient, along the lines of the Toyota Prius.

While TRU is starting with seven, that number could also increase if warranted, Gudjonson said.

The program requires membership as an individual, company or, in the case of TRU, university. Applicants must be at least 18, if they are part of the university program, must

have a valid driver’s licence, must have a driving record that meets Zipcar’s requirements and must provide a credit card number.

Once approved, they receive a card in the mail that will allow them to access a vehicle in the fleet by tapping the card on the window.

They must reserve it first; the keys and gas card are kept in the vehicles.

According to Zipcar’s website, reservations include 200 kilometres at no charge; for one-day use over that amount, there is a 30-cent charge for each additional kilometre.

For those using a vehicle for more than one day, 200 kilometres is included for each 24-hour period, with other kilometre-based charges beyond that amount.

A clearer picture is emerging of the former soldier involved in an apparent murdersuicide in Nova Scotia, with his own words on social media revealing a man struggling with PTSD who was trying to get his life back.

“I’m truly sorry for freaking out at my wife/ daughter and people who know me . . . I’m not getting a lawyer. I’m getting my life back,’’ Lionel Desmond wrote in a Dec. 3 Facebook post that did not elaborate.

“I apologize for anything out [of] my control. I will fix it, if not I’ll live with it.”

Desmond, 33, was found dead on Tuesday night in a home in Upper Big Tracadie from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, RCMP say.

His wife Shanna Desmond, 31, their 10-year-old daughter Aaliyah and his mother Brenda Desmond, 52, also died of apparent gunshot wounds.

Friends and family say Desmond was a kind and funny person, who changed after a tour in Afghanistan in 2007.

In his Facebook posting last month, Desmond said he had hit his head on an light armoured vehicle and suffered back spasms after falling off a wall while in the Forces and had been told he now had post-concussion disorder as well as PTSD. “That [explains] my jealousy towards my wife and being over-controlling and [my] vulgar tongue towards my family,” he wrote.

Friends and family confirmed the Facebook page, attributed to a “Lionel Demon,’’ belonged to Lionel Desmond.

He wrote he had “ADD/ADHD from thrashing my head” and doctors told him he should seek neurological help in Halifax.

“I just hope there’s no brain damage . . . I will be going to Halifax to find out, wish me the best,’’ Desmond wrote.

Rev. Elaine Walcott, a relative of Desmond, said yesterday he got treatment last year in Montreal but was looking for more help.

She said Desmond recently tried to check himself into a mental health unit at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish and was told there were no beds. She said he was also told they didn’t have his files.

Walcott said Canadian soldiers are asked to put their life on the line in battle but not enough is done for them once they return home.

“How can we then have them cope with feelings of abandonment? How can we then have them question why they are not as nice as they used to be?

As kind as they used to be?” she asked.

Desmond served in Afghanistan in 2007 and received treatment from a joint personnel support unit for a year prior to his release from the military in July 2015.

Such units provide support to ill and

injured soldiers, including mental injuries.

A retired soldier who served in Afghanistan with Desmond said yesterday his friend had the classic symptoms of PTSD but appeared to be dealing with them.

“Every time I think about Lionel Desmond as a person, I smile, because he was the person that everyone wanted to be. He was quiet. He was funny. He was the joker. Everyone loved him. Not a harmful bone in his body,’’ Trev Bungay said.

“Lionel two days ago wasn’t Lionel. He fought hard for his country whenever he was asked to do it.

“He came home and needed help and he couldn’t get sufficient help to make him be able to live a normal life,’’ Bungay said.

Bungay was a master-corporal in charge of Desmond during their time in Afghanistan. He said Desmond was a great soldier who did his job well, but it was a difficult and stressful deployment.

‘There will be an ongoing process to make sure that the system responded’ Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil says an investigation has started into how the province’s health-care system dealt with an Afghan war veteran who died in an apparent murder-suicide that claimed the lives of his wife, daughter and mother.

McNeil said the “unspeakable loss’’ Tuesday in the closeknit community of Upper Big Tracadie, N.S., has prompted the Health Department and the province’s health authority to review what services were offered and whether protocols were followed.

The premier said it’s clear Lionel Desmond received treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder from the mili-

tary, but he says it’s unclear what level of care — if any — was provided by the province.

“There will be an ongoing process to make sure that the system responded,’’ McNeil said after a cabinet meeting yesterday.

“There are times when accessing services of any kind in this province are challenging . . . In this case, the department will be reviewing to make sure that the appropriate protocols and services were in place for this family.”

McNeil also said he will be speaking with the federal Veterans Affairs Department to determine how federal officials handled Desmond’s case.

Military sources have said Desmond received treatment for PTSD before he left the military 18 months ago and relatives have come forward to say he was unable to get help more recently when he went to a hospital in nearby Antigonish, N.S. The premier said the province will look into what happened at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, though it remains unclear when that will happen or if the province’s findings will be made public.

RCMP said autopsies were performed yesterday on the bodies and they hope to say more about the case today.

CALGARY — The case of a Sunwing Airlines pilot charged with being impaired in the cockpit has been put over until Jan. 25.

Miroslav Gronych, a 37-year-old Slovakian national, is accused of having care and control of an aircraft while impaired and with having a blood-alcohol level above .08.

Gronych did not appear in Calgary court Thursday, but the matter was addressed by a lawyer on his behalf.

Police allege Gronych, the captain, was found slumped over in his seat and then escorted off the plane.

Gronych was released on $1,000 bail and was ordered to turn in his passport.

He was also prohibited from flying a plane in Canada while on bail.

The allegations against Gronych have not been tested in court.

Airlines have until Feb. 15 to confirm their measures to ensure flight crew members are fit to fly, and procedures are strictly enforced, he wrote.

“The incident in Calgary reminds us all of the need to ensure that protocols are up to date and that they are being implemented with all the required resources, including measures designed to confirm pilots’ fitness to fly,” he wrote.

“While standard protocols and quick

crew action did address the recent incident, we all collectively have a responsibility to make sure our systems are robust enough to prevent such incidents in the future.”

Garneau also said department officials are putting together a workshop in the early spring “to bring companies, unions and medical experts together to consider further steps necessary to enhance aviation safety.”

Transport Canada says Canada’s largest passenger airlines have safety management systems in place to help them iden-

tify risks before they become bigger problems to ensure that safety is part of their everyday culture.

That includes having proper procedures in place to ensure pilots are competent and fit to fly.

The department has said it is reviewing Sunwing’s protocols to ensure the airline’s handling of Saturday’s incident complied with its safety management system and Canadian regulations.

It has also said it will not hesitate to take enforcement action if necessary, including issuing fines and revoking licences if

appropriate.

Under Canadian Aviation Regulations, members of a flight crew are prohibited from working within eight hours of consuming alcohol or while under the influence of alcohol.

It is up to each airline to ensure those regulations are followed.

Sunwing has said it has a zero tolerance policy on crew members consuming alcohol within 12 hours of going on duty.

The company said it also trains all employees to look for and report any unusual behaviour.

NEGOTIATIONS UNDERWAY IN SYRIA TO RECOVER BODY OF CANADIAN FIGHTER It’s not going to be a short process or an “easy process.”

TORONTO — Negotiations are underway to recover the body of a Canadian man killed while fighting Islamic State militants in Syria, a leader of Toronto’s Kurdish community said yesterday.

Nazzareno Tassone, 24, was killed in the city of Raqqa on Dec. 21 while fighting alongside Kurdish forces, according to the Kurdish People’s Defense Units, a U.S.-backed group also known as the YPG. His family only learned of his death this week when a letter from the YPG was delivered to their Niagara Falls, Ont., home by police and members of the Toronto Kurdish Community Centre.

In that letter, the family also learned Tassone’s body had been seized by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, known as ISIS or ISIL. Tassone’s sister, Giustina

Tassone, pleaded with the Canadian government on Wednesday to help repatriate her brother’s body so the family could have a funeral. The Toronto Kurdish Community Centre said negotiations had begun between the YPG and ISIL to retrieve the Canadian fighter’s body.

“We spoke to [the YPG] this morning and there’s still ongoing negotiations between them,’’ said centre co-president Ihsan Kaya.

Kaya said the YPG was also negotiating to recover the bodies of other fighters killed in combat on the same day as Nazzareno Tassone, including a British volunteer fighter named

Ryan Lock.

“It’s not going to be a short process or an easy process,’’ he said.

All costs related to retrieving and repatriating Tassone’s body will be covered by the YPG, Kaya said, and the cost of the man’s eventual funeral in Canada will be covered by the Toronto Kurdish Community Centre.

“We’re talking about a person that’s not even Kurdish that left his home country to fight against ISIS for the Kurds and for the name of humanity, so we wanted to show respect,” Kaya said.

Ed Patterson doesn’t take the Kamloops Storm’s road record at face value.

The head coach of the Storm, Patterson guided his team to the holiday break as one of the KIJHL’s hottest, the club boasting an 8-2 record in its last 10 games and a mark of 17-10-1-4 overall.

But buried in the numbers that have the club ranked second in the Doug Birks Division is a below-.500 road record. Kamloops has lost nine of 15 games away from Memorial Arena this season — five in regulation and four more in extra time.

So, with the Storm set to play six of nine games in January away from Kamloops, should fans of the junior B club be worried?

Full disclosure, the Storm’s road-heavy schedule in the new year was set at the team’s behest — ice time in the Tournament Capital is hard to come by in December and January.

But Patterson said it was more than scheduling that will drive Kamloops out of Memorial Arena for much of 2017’s first month.

“It’s good to — almost like the start of the season — be on the road a little bit so they can get

out, get a little bit of adversity and have to bond really quickly together on road trips and stuff,” he said.

“We had a two-week break.

They should be rejuvenated and energized, but also, a little bit rusty. So, it’s good to get rid of the rust away from home and that sort of pressure.”

The first game of 2017 will be played in Revelstoke tonight.

Kamloops has only played in the Revelstoke Forum once this season, winning 4-2.

After returning to Kamloops on Sunday for a game against the 100 Mile House Wranglers, the Storm will play in some of the conference’s toughest buildings throughout the remainder of January, including Chase’s Art Holding Memorial Arena, the Osoyoos Sun Bowl and 100 Mile House’s South Cariboo Rec Centre.

Players aren’t bothered by the prospect of a month spent largely on the road.

“I like playing in an away barn just because you can break them down in front of their own crowd,” said Storm forward Dallas Otto.

“I find that works in our favour.”

Asked what has led to the stark difference between Kamloops’ results at home and on the road, the 19-year-old pointed to a young club having issues with focus.

“Sometimes we’ll have our heads totally in it — when we show up here [Memorial], we’re all ready to go, we’re all clean,” he said.

“Sometimes it’s just little setbacks, like our heads aren’t in it on the road. We’ve got to overcome that.”

Despite a mixed bag of results away from the Tournament Capital this season, the Storm remain confident they can resume a stretch of play that saw them win six of seven games in the month of December, including three games on the road.

The key will be to shake off the holiday season as quickly as possible.

“Just mentally, coming back from the break, we can’t be off topic,” said forward Hayden Dick.

“We can’t be lazy like we were over the break, having two weeks of eating pizza, watching movies, messing around on the ice.

“It comes down to who’s more disciplined, who’s going to be in a little bit better condition.”

WHO IS THIS PERSON On Thursday, December 8th in the mid afternoon, a lone male entered a small business in the downtown area. The male walked around the store for a brief period of time. When the store employee was busy with another customer, the suspect grabbed an item from the shelf and walked out of the store. It was not until the male had left the store, the staff realize the male had stolen something.

This male is described in his mid 20’s, dark hair, slim build, at the time was wearing red track pants with a grey hoodie.

The Kamloops Blazers have added a point-per-game overage centre to their lineup and traded away a promising young defenceman.

Blazers’ general manager Stu MacGregor shipped 17-year-old rearguard Conner McDonald, a secondround pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft and a fifth-round pick in the 2018 bantam draft to the Edmonton Oil Kings yesterday in exchange for 20-year-old forward Lane Bauer and a seventh-round pick in the 2017 bantam draft.

“We found an opportunity to get one of the better 20-year-olds in the league,” MacGregor said. “You’re never comfortable in moving good players, but you have to move good players to get good players.”

MacGregor gave something to get <---Change something onthis Dec.date 27 when 18-yearold defenceman Dawson Davidson was sent to the Regina Pats in exchange for 18-year-old Luc Smith, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound bottom-six centre.

Bauer is a top-six forward, with 25 goals and 40 points in 40 games this season. The Anchorage, Alaska, product has 86 goals and 176 points in 231 WHL games.

With the Blazers having established one of the league’s best lines in centre Garrett Pilon between wingers Rudolfs Balcers and Deven Sideroff, Bauer will likely slot in on the second line alongside captain Collin Shirley, but those decisions will be up to head coach Don Hay. “You almost have two second lines and the coach will start fitting the pieces together through this weekend and as we move through the rest of the season,” MacGregor said.

On Dec. 11, MacGregor acquired 19-year-old forward Nic Holowko from the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for a conditional sixthround pick in the 2018 bantam draft.

With the WHL’s Jan. 10 trade deadline looming, the Blazers’ GM has addressed a lack of depth up front, but is he OK with the defence corps going forward, having parted ways with two good, young blue liners?

“Yes, we are,” MacGregor said bluntly when the question was posed.

Kamloops called up 17-year-old defenceman Tylor Ludwar yesterday from the midget AAA Regina Pat Canadians, with whom the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Regina product had 14 goals and 22 points this season.

“He’ll come in and be with us for the rest of the year,” MacGregor said.

“He’s had a tremendous season with the Canadians and he was their captain. We think he’s ready to come in and contribute.”

“A very hard decision was made today, but we feel we had to make it just because of getting the quality player in Lane Bauer and the number of games we need to play to get into playoff position and make ourselves a viable contender,” MacGregor said.

“Matt will have an opportunity in the Western Hockey League, if he so chooses. Matt’s a great young man.”

The Thompson Rivers WolfPack have faced their share of adversity this season.

When training camp broke in the fall, the roster already looked a little different than head coach Scott Clark might have expected.

Nineteen-year-old guard Evan Helgason was expected to miss the season after suffering a wrist injury training in the offseason. Eighteen-year-old guard Jordan Komarniski would be red-shirting after a summer dealing with medical issues.

Jonathan Layne, a 22-year-old guard who had come to the Pack from Toronto, tore his ACL in workouts in September.

But the club persevered, putting together a .500 first half, going 5-5 in their first 10 games.

Now, with the season’s second half set to begin tonight with a game against the Victoria Vikes (2-6) at the Tournament Capital Centre at 8 p.m., they’ll have to overcome another hurdle — the loss of second-year and former

all-rookie guard Jeff Tubbs.

Tubbs, who was among this season’s leaders in minutes per game (27.8) and assists per game (2.4), has the left the Pack for personal reasons.

It’s another void Thompson Rivers will look to fill.

“It’s kind of by committee,” Clark said, asked how the WolfPack expects to handle Tubbs’ loss.

“It was good we got to play down in California and try to figure things out. These are usually things you figure out at the beginning of the year, but we tried to sort that out over a twogame stretch in California.”

Clark’s clubs have often done well handling adversity. Last season, the WolfPack finished second at the Canada West Final Four and qualified for the CIS nationals, despite the team admittedly not having the same sort of depth as some of the other top contenders.

Now, the Wolves will look to navigate a second-half schedule — which, in addition to the Vikes, includes contests against

the Winnipeg Wesmen (6-4), the Fraser Valley Cascades (3-5), the Calgary Dinos (7-1) and the Regina Cougars (5-3) — with a shortened bench.

“I’ve been happy with how we have handled things,” Clark said.

“As a group, we control the factors that are under our control and those things that aren’t, we don’t really tend to pay much attention to.

“That’s this year, but it’s really previous years as well. We’ve had a core group of guys that have been able to focus on what’s important and what you have control over.”

In California, the WolfPack won games on both Dec. 29 and Dec. 30, defeating the West Coast Baptist Eagles 97-94 and the Antelope Valley Pioneers 76-75.

Clark expects the action over the break will have his team ready for a Vikes club that had a tough first-half schedule.

“Their backs are up against the wall right now. I would expect you’re going to see a desperate team,” he said.

Ingram started in the crease against Sweden in semifinal play on Wednesday at the Bell Centre, but was pulled after allowing two goals on three shots and replaced

by Everett Silvertips’ netminder Carter Hart at 8:05 of the first period.

Hart made 28 saves without allowing a goal and Canada downed Sweden 5-2. The Silvertips’ backstop got the nod against the Americans last night.

Ingram endured boos from the crowd on his way to the bench and took a few moments to sit down and gather himself.

“It’s a game,” Ingram’s father, Brent, told KTW yesterday morning. “People pay money, it’s an entertainment factor and they certainly have the right to do

Ingram’s name was trending No. 1 nationwide on twitter in the minutes following Sweden’s second goal, once again proving playing goalie for Canada is a scrutinized task and the Internet is rife with trolls.

Joni Ingram, Connor’s mother, has a tough time watching her son play at the best of times, so watching what transpired on Wednesday night and listening to

the crowd’s reaction must have been gut-wrenching.

“It’s never easy on her in any game and that game was a little tougher than most, but she has bounced back and recovered,” Brent said.

Ingram visited with family and friends at a Wednesday night reception, signed autographs and talked over the game with teammates.

“It will have taken him halfan-hour after the game to process all that went on and digest it, but for the event and what’s gone on, he handled it very well,” Brent said.

Eriksson Ek scored shorthanded for Sweden at 6:05 of the first period, a wrist shot down his off wing that Ingram will want back.

Mitchell Stephens banged in a rebound to tie the game, but Sweden took the lead again at 8:05 when Carl Grundstrom lost control of the puck on a drive to the net and it squeaked through Ingram.

Hart took over from there and Canada played well in front of him.

“It certainly wasn’t the start he was going for, but he kept positive on the bench for all those guys and the team played well and fought back,” Brent said. “He was just as excited about winning as everybody else, so we were very proud of the way he handled that.”

“You move on and tomorrow’s a better a day.”

KTW has made multiple requests through Hockey Canada to speak with Ingram throughout the tournament, but he has not been made available.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Elizabeth Nunn McCormack It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Elizabeth “Liz” McCormack on December 31, 2016 at her home in Kamloops, BC. Liz was born in Columbia, Missouri in 1948 and moved with her family to Vancouver in 1958 where her father was employed as a Professor in the Commerce Department at UBC. After graduating from high school in 1966, she attended the University of British Columbia for two years where she met her future husband Jim McCormack. They married in November 1968 and flew to Kalulushi, Zambia where Jim began his career as a Mining Engineer. Liz worked as a clerk at a pharmacy and later as a stock clerk for a heavy equipment dealership in Kitwe until her daughter Dana was born in 1971 followed by her son Sean in 1972.

Liz and her new family returned to Canada in August 1972 and moved to Stewart, B.C. where Jim was employed at the Granduc Copper Mine.

In May 1973, they relocated to Pine Point in the NWT where her third child Ryan was born and where she became a naturalized Canadian of which she was very proud. In 1976 the family moved to Yellowknife when Jim was transferred to the Con Gold Mine.

In 1980, the family settled in Kamloops. With the children in school, Liz enrolled at Cariboo College where she earned a diploma in Drafting Technology.

In 1987 the family was on the move again: Ladner, B.C., Flin Flon, Manitoba; North Bay, Ontario, back to Kamloops in 1990, on to Dawson City in 1996, back to Kamloops in 1998, Thunder Bay, Ontario in 2000 and back to Kamloops again in 2001. While in Kamloops between 1990 and 1996 Liz took computer courses at Thompson Rivers University and when she returned in 2001 she worked for Convergys until she left to join Jim for a two year project in Argentina. In 2010, Jim and Liz returned to Kamloops and took up retirement.

As may be assumed, Liz was an expert in moving and

making strange places into a home. She was the glue that held the family together. She loved to travel and visited all the world’s continents with the exception of Antarctica, albeit that Asia was accomplished by setting foot on the east side of the Bosporus in Turkey.

While living in North Bay, Liz joined the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and subsequently transferred to her chapter in Kamloops with whom she maintained membership for many years. Liz was very active in both the sorority, the Kamloops CanGo Grannies and the Kamloops RCMP Victim Services. Liz was a bookworm, it would be hard to find a book she hasn’t read. She enjoyed arts and was an expert craftswoman (knitting, sewing, etc.).

Liz is survived by her husband Jim, her daughter Dana McCormack, her sons Ryan and Sean McCormack with their spouses Wendy and Carianne, her four grandchildren Molly, Nolan, Eamon and Maisie all of whom she was very proud and her two brothers Gordon and John Chapman.

Her passing has left a hole in all our hearts.

A Memorial Service will be held for Liz at the Schoening Funeral Home in Kamloops on January 11, 2017 at 1:00 pm.

Obituaries & In Memoriam E. Joan Clapham

November 23, 1942 – December 30, 2016 Joan’s family is heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend after a short but gracefully endured illness. Joan was predeceased by her parents Josh and May Simpson, in-laws Isabel and Harry Clapham, brother-in-law Bill Karr and sister-in-law Cathy Cox. Left to miss her are her husband of 56 years Herb, who was with her until the bitter end, daughter Barb and her children Karoline and Callia, daughter Kim and her children Isabella, Mika and Emma, all four of her sisters Jocelyn, Pat, Noreen and Judy and their families, brother-in-law Tom Clapham, sister-in-law Rebecca Barnard and their families.

Joan was born in Chilliwack and grew up in Clinton, BC where she met and married her young banker husband Herb. They were transferred many times throughout BC and made many friends and memories along the way before settling and retiring in Penticton. She loved the holidays and would have been annoyed to be ruining everyone’s Christmas time by her being sick. But from her work in accounting, she would have been pleased to have “wrapped up” before the end of the tax year.

The family would like to thank Dr. Paisley and the nurses on SP3 at Penticton Hospital, especially Kimberley and Kyla, for their kind care of Joan and of Herb during the difficult past few weeks.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of

Lesley Jewison on New Year’s Eve. Lesley bravely fought serious breathing issues for many years before finally succumbing to respiratory failure just a month after her 70th birthday. Her courage and strength have always been an inspiration to her family and friends.

Lesley is survived by her beloved husband Norm, and they would have celebrated 50 years of marriage this August.

She is also survived by her loving daughters Trish and Sarah, along with her sister Terry and her brother Campbell.

Lesley is predeceased by her parents, Campbell Sr. and Norah, and her sister Robin.

Lesley was born in Montreal, QC and grew up in suburban Hudson, QC. She met Norm while the two worked a summer job together and they married in 1967.

The family moved to Vancouver in 1977 to pursue Norm’s career in the hockey business and where Lesley enjoyed a lengthy career working with the doctors at the UBC Sports Medicine Clinic. In their spare time, they were avid boaters and made many friends in that fraternity. Through it all, Lesley lovingly raised her girls in the family home in Lynn Valley, North Vancouver.

In 2007, Lesley and Norm retired from the hustle and bustle of the city and moved to the North Okanagan just west of Savona to their, “little house in the country” overlooking the Thompson River. Lesley loved to entertain the many guests that would visit each summer, and also cherished trips south each winter to Yuma, Arizona where many of our “snowbird” friends gathered.

Shortly after arriving in Savona, Lesley joined the Savona Heritage Society where she busily assisted other local volunteers in helping preserve the local history and artifacts in the Savona Museum.

A voracious reader, Lesley could always be found with a book in her hand and her library was a source of great pride.

The family would like to salute the incredible staff in the RIH ICU for its tireless care and compassion, as well as her family doctor during this difficult period.

A Celebration of Lesley’s Life with family and friends will be held in late spring when the sun is shining and the weather is warm.

August 29, 1928 – December 20, 2016 We regret to announce the passing of Ken Spiers, an easygoing, courageous man full of laughter and spirit.

Ken was born in East Sheffield, England to William and Edith Spiers. He was the third of three children and often shared stories of growing up with his mates in Rotherham on Albion Road. Ken met his wife Norma when he was 13 years old. She lived a few doors down the road and they were married in Rotherham England in 1952.

At 18, Ken joined the British Army at the end of WWII as a combat engineer and was part of the German occupation and peacekeeping force. He often joked about his gunnery squad that had the quietest guns – they had no shells to shoot. After two years in Germany, he returned to England to complete his military service. Upon discharge, he was hired by Mappins Brewery as an apprentice millwright, which started him to his lifelong career as a millwright.

Ken and Norma emigrated to Toronto, Ontario in 1953 but returned to England five years later to have children. In 1966, they emigrated back to Canada, with Ken taking a position at the Alcan Aluminium Smelter in Kitimat, BC. In 1968 they moved to Prince George, BC where he worked the remainder of his millwright career at Canfor Pulp and Paper.

Never one to stop moving, Ken was always dreaming, planning and building things.

He enjoyed cycling to work in the summer, Nordic skiing in the winter and loved to collect tools and build up his workshop. Ken was a doting grandfather and lived for his grandchildren, eventually moving to Kamloops to live closer. He loved to spend hours visiting the stores around town, and his cheerful, outgoing nature made him welcome wherever he visited. His offbeat English humour brightened everyone’s day.

Predeceased by his sister Betty and brother Bill, Ken leaves behind his wife Norma, his daughter Debbie (Cam), son Greg (Anne) and his grandchildren Jillian, Christopher and Matthew, as well as his many relatives in England.

In his later years, Ken struggled with Alzheimer’s and was crippled by spinal stenosis. Never one to complain, he soldiered on through life with a ready joke and a positive, optimistic attitude. A true champion, no matter his condition, he never stopped moving and making the world a happier, sunnier place for others.

He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed but has moved on to a better place.

Ann Catherine Jeffrey May 23, 1941 – January 2, 2017

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Ann on Monday, January 2, 2017 at the age of 75 years.

Ann will be lovingly remembered by her brother Frederick Edward Jeffrey, her sister-in-law Dorothy Pauline Jeffrey (Parsons), nieces Stacey Leigh Gallays (Jeffrey) and Christine Ann Jeffrey and great nieces Jordyn Leigh Jeffrey, Taylor Leigh Gallays, Madisen Christine Gallays and Jamie Leslie Clark.

She was predeceased by her parents Margaret and Frederick Jeffrey.

Ann spent 30 years with NBTel before settling in Kamloops. She was very active with CWL in the Church and enjoyed playing cards with her friends several times a week. Ann loved to travel, bake and she would put on giant Sunday brunches for her family.

A special thanks to the staff at the Kamloops Hospice for their care of Ann in her final days.

Prayers will be recited on Monday, January 9th, 2017 at 7:00 pm at the St. John Vianney Parish, 2826 Bank Rd, Kamloops, BC. Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, January 10th, 2017 at 11:00 am with Monsignor Jerry Desmond Celebrant.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Grace Margaret Swanton.

Warren James Albiston of Kamloops, BC passed away on December 29, 2016 at the age of 81 years.

Mom died in her sleep on the evening of December 23, 2016. She was 93 years old. Her passing marks the end of an era; she was the last living child of Oliver and Cora Holmes family of six. She was pre-deceased by our father Richard (Dick) Arthur Swanton.

Predeceased by one brother and three sister. Warren is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 53 years Norah, daughters Karen, Cathy (Neil) Farber, Norma (Bryan) Koll, grandchildren Clayton, Tanner, Bailey and Jesse, all of Kamloops and brother Stan (Marilyn) of Kaysville, Utah.

Warren was born on December 11, 1935 in Kamloops.

He grew up in Walhachin, the youngest of the five children of John and Gladys. He married Norah in 1963 and they raised their family on Dominion Street, next to good neighbours the MacKinders and the Gasparins, while Warren worked at the BC Land Titles office. He retired from there in 1995 after 36 years of service.

Dad loved to fish and enjoyed tying flies and keeping detailed journals of his day on the lakes with his good fishing friend Bob New. He also enjoyed hockey and spent many years following, travelling with and watching the Blazers.

We would like to thank the wonderful staff of Ponderosa Lodge that cared for Dad. Private family arrangements have been made.

She leaves to mourn her passing her six children Margaret Carleton (Ross), Maureen Pytela (Martin), Denise Harper (John), Charles Swanton, Michael Swanton (Celina) and Brian Swanton (Joanne). Her grandchildren Stephanie, Rebecca, Connor, Ari, Susanne, Elisabeth Pytela, Karen, Brenda, Kathleen, Martin, Cheryl, Dexter, Krina, Andrew, Brendan, Kaelan and Rhianna, plus twenty four great and greatgreatgrandchildren. Also mourning her passing are two former daughters-in-law Ineke and Pam Swanton.

Mom was born in Benson, Saskatchewan. She attended Normal School in Regina and taught for several years at small schools in south eastern Saskatchewan before moving to Mission, BC. Following his return from service in WWII Mom met and married our father Dick Swanton.

Both Dad and Mom were teachers and together with their growing family they lived and taught in many towns in BC including Mission, 100 Mile House, Squamish, Clinton, Vanderhoof, Terrace and finally Lillooet. As they travelled, they met many people and gathered many friends. At the end of their teaching careers they retired to Chase, BC where, as was their practice, they became very involved in the community.

For their tireless hours of volunteer work Mom and Dad were named jointly Citizens of the Year.

Mom enjoyed her teaching career and the people she met in each community. She was a lifelong learner and taught each of her children the importance to think critically and always do our research. Mom is fondly remembered by many of her former students – some

who still call her Miss Holmes.

A teacher ahead of her time she encouraged her students to read, even if it was a comic book, believing in instilling the passion now and encouraging prescribed reading later.

Mom believed in working to make life better for others and we have memories of the wellknown and not so well known people who joined our dinner table while performing in our small communities.

Bringing classical performances to the people of our small town was just one of mother’s many endeavours.

It was only in the past few years that Mom retired from organizing group trips for her friends and asking one of her daughters to provide the transportation. Mom loved attending the Kamloops Symphony and Western Canada Theatre performances and attended both when she could.

Following Dad’s death in 1995, Mom stayed in Chase for another nine years before moving to Berwick on the Park in 2006 where she lived out the rest of her life. While there she was active in the many activities offered residents and gathering groups to attend choir or musical performances. As her hearing diminished so did those activities.

The family would like to thank the remarkable staff at Berwick on the Park for her wonderful years there and for the kind and loving care each of you showed to Mom during her recent decline in health. We would also like to thank Dr. Victor DeKock and the staff at Summit Medical Clinic.

Despite her growing health issues Mom passed in comfort and without pain or fear. We are truly grateful for that.

A Celebration of Life for Grace will be held later in the Spring.

Sean Patrick Dunn Sean Patrick Dunn (Dunner to all his friends) was born in Prince George, BC on October 10, 1974 to Tom and Kathie Dunn.

Sean passed away suddenly and tragically on December 30, 2016. He is survived by his parents Tom and Kathie and baby sister Lindsay (Ryan) Laffrenere, grandfather and best friend Keith Brown, uncles and aunts Jim and Sally Brown, Denis and Diane Dunn, Mike and Leslie Dunn and cousins Alison, Ryan, Allison, Kevin, Colin and Kelly. Sean also leaves his 15 year companion Elizabeth Bigg, with whom he shared life and travel.

Elizabeth’s young niece Faith was very dear to Sean and he loved her immensely. Sean was predeceased by grandfather and grandmothers Mickey and Marge Dunn and Margaret (Bubs) Brown as well as his aunt Leslie Muir.

Sean lived in Prince George until 1981 when we moved to Kamloops, BC. He attended Bert Edwards Elementary School then NorKam Secondary School upon his graduation. He met friends in Bert Edwards that carried on all through school as well as up to the time of his passing. Brad, George and Ken were his best buddies and still are to this day.

Sean started working in the bush with his grandpa Keith and this led to his career in the forest industry. He worked and studied hard to achieve his Registered Practical Forester certificate which he was very proud of. He worked for Integrated Woods, (which evolved into the IPAC Consulting) for 25 years and he truly loved his job. Sean was project manager for the Southern Interior around the Grand Forks area. He loved being out in the bush and took so much pride in his work.

He loved going to Adams Lake from birth to his passing. This was one of his favourite places to launch his boat with family, friends, the dogs and just cruise, naming small beaches around the lake Hawaii and Tahiti where we would all water ski and tube.

But his most adored place was Zihuatanejo, Mexico where he traveled with Elizabeth and his parents for many years. The locals just loved him and look forward to seeing him each year. He and Liz took the time and effort at night school to learn Spanish and he could converse with the Mexicans at length. He would always bail us out of botched Spanish conversation.

Sean also had passion for animals, especially dogs and their safety and well-being. He was very unselfish with his time and went down to Saints Rescue in the Lower Mainland to help out at a fundraiser. He also donated his Ford pickup to Angel’s Rescue in Merritt. He loved his dogs Spike and Hawk. He generously gave to the local Humane Society in Zihuatanejo and would help walk and play with the dogs. Money raised would go towards spaying and neutering.

Sean was the NFL Philadelphia Eagles biggest fan and would be glued to the TV when they were on. He has so much memorabilia of his team and even attended a home game in Philly with Elizabeth that was a highlight of his life. We just wish we could’ve seen them win a Super Bowl.

Everything Shawn touched concerning sports turned to gold. He was an excellent golfer, skier on both snow and water, rugby and rep hockey player to only name a few. He really enjoyed being an associate member of the Kamloops Golf Club and playing with his father, sister Lindsay, brother-in-law Ryan, Jeremy McCrae and Ryan’s uncle Tom Charles.

Sean also enjoyed music, everything from Johnny Cash in the fifties, British Invasion in the sixties, classic rock in the seventies, glam and hair in the eighties and grunge in the nineties. He was very fond of the metal scene with some of his favourite bands being Metallica, The Who, Pantera, Anthrax, Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Guns and Roses and especially Megadeth. From birth there was constant ringing in his ears of Eagles and John Fogerty tunes and managed to see both live. He attended many, many concerts of all genres and had future tickets to see a Johnny Cash tribute and Roger Waters in Vancouver. He was also an accomplished musician in the past, playing guitar and being in the high school band.

We were so proud when Sean was asked to play lead trumpet at NorKam in his grad year. Sean was an extremely good looking man with impeccable neatness and was a very sharp dresser. He will always be remembered with his Eagles ball cap glued to his head. Sean was very happy, considerate, compassionate person with a great sense of humour and a lot of life left to live. Sadly that opportunity was taken from him senselessly and he will be missed by all who knew him.

At Sean’s request, he wished only for an informal gathering of family and friends. The date for that will be April 15, 2017 at the CEP Hall on Lansdowne Street in Kamloops, which is a more suitable time for travel outside of winter.

Largest comedy tour in Canada began to pay for a snowboarding trip

S

hovelling the sidewalk is a gruelling task after being snowed in, but this tour may put a smile back on your face during snowy, winter months.

The Snowed In Comedy Tour is back for another year and will stop in Kamloops for a performance on Jan. 20 at the Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre, 1250 Rogers Way. The tour features Canadian comedians

and snowboarders who combine comedy performances with vacation time.

The cross-Canada tour started nine years ago with Just for Laughs winner Dan Quinn, who decided one snowy evening in a Fernie bar he would do stand-up to pay for his snowboarding trip.

Quinn grabbed a powder map and was amazed how many ski hills were in B.C. Once other comedians heard the idea, they asked to join.

The idea became “if we lose money, we lose money. But if we make money, we split it,” he said.

The comedians managed to pay for their vacation and earned extra. The tour was so successful, Quinn did it again.

What started off as a two-week snowboarding trip expanded into a six-week adventure featuring 32 tour dates across Canada.

“People just kept showing up and coming back. [This year] most of our shows are almost sold out,” he said.

The trip is still based on snowboarding, which the comedians do for about five days a week after basing the shows on ski-hill locations.

This year, three new dates were added in Quesnel, Silver Star and Big White.

The tour mixes big and small venues and features: Wild man MC Craig Campbell, Canadian Comedian of the Year nominee Pete Zedlacher, Canadian laugh off winner Paul Myrehaug, Quinn, Flight of the Conchords’ Aji Barker and Seattle Comedy Competition winner Damonde Tschritter.

Quinn said Barker, who is famous in Australia and worldwide, performs because it’s one of his favourite tours.

New KAG exhibit to focus on sustainable energy A new exhibit at the Kamloops Art Gallery (KAG) will feature public submissions depicting ways people use sustainable energy on a regular basis.

The Kamloops Chapter of the B.C. Sustainable Energy Association will showcase Everyday Sustainable Energy

Superheroes Exhibition at the Kamloops Art Gallery from Jan. 14 through March 25.

Submissions focus on transportation, food sourcing, consumer behaviour, managing waste, lifestyle choices and conservation and production.

Vaughn Warren has submitted a recycled wood piece and other submissions include photographs, paintings, collages, books and posters.

Explore rocks, gems at BLSC Geologist Don Bouffard will talk about the science he’s spent his life researching when he presents an interactive lecture at The Big Little Science Centre on Jan. 25.

Bouffard will bring some of his treasure chest of rocks and gems he’s found along the way.

The Snowed In Comedy Tour started in Prince Rupert on Jan. 4 and ends in Saskatoon on March 11.

It has become the largest comedy tour in Canada.

As a young boy, he watched Steven Wright with his mother, but it wasn’t until he saw an ad in the newspaper for a comedian that he decided to give it a shot.

Quinn has done numerous appearances on TV and radio and won the Canadian Comedy Competition at Just for Laughs in Montreal.

He has done Comedy Now on CTV, The Debaters, Sirius XM radio and won Best of the Fest at the Hubcap Comedy Festival in Moncton.

He travels around the world performing in England, the U.S. Australia, Switzerland and France.

Fourteen students were huddled around the table in a university creativewriting workshop.

As was the custom, we were analyzing one of the students’ pieces of writing — what was working well, what wasn’t and how it could be improved.

We’d gone around the room, each offering comments on what was in front of us.

Now the professor — a respected, awardwinning author — was telling us what he thought.

He didn’t think much. The dialogue was all wrong. The metaphors were terrible.

And the work he was referring to was mine.

You’d think after five years of writing workshops, I’d have thicker skin. Nope.

I’d received plenty of feedback before, but it always included a little bit of positive.

(Hey, “nice font” counts.)

Though I managed to keep it together for the rest of class, a subsequent wallop of selfdoubt had me seriously considering dropping out.

OF THE CITY ers, musicians, actors, filmmakers — or, let’s face it, simply humans — at some point, we’ve posted our photo on Facebook, played a tune for friends or shown choreography to a dance hero and asked those five little words: “So, what do you think?”

Some of us only want encouragement and compliments; others prefer directness, even when it’s not entirely positive.

In my experience, the best feedback is constructive and incisive, yet still encouraging and helps us get better.

“From a colleague or someone who knows the discipline, feedback is highly valued and I am grateful that they care to give it,” says local pianist and teach-

er Daniela O’Fee. “And, of course, any compliments from anyone makes me feel like I made a difference in a small way.”

Singer-songwriter Caitlin Goulet agrees.

“Honest and direct feedback is a great way to build trust,” she says.

“While I always consider the source, I do appreciate it. It motivates me to focus on areas that need improvement.

“If someone cares enough to say something directly to me, that means a lot to me.”

Clement Yeh is a local visual artist who feels strongly that creatives need feedback, especially after they’ve left art school: “The top three reasons people stop doing art are because they no longer have the community, constructive feedback or a space to work in . . . you have to have that outside opinion.

“Feedback is not just for getting advice; it forces the artist to verbalize their intention [artist statement]

— and work to achieve it if it’s not coming through.”

Need to give or receive feedback?

Theatre artist Heather Cant recommends Liz Lermahn’s Critical Response Process, which provides a framework for critiques, with the end goal to motivate the creator to get back to work.

“Studying it really changed how I approach and articulate my own thoughts and also how I hear and facilitate those of others,” Cant says.

Context, too, is key.

“I think people who are giving feedback need to reveal through which lens they are viewing the piece and giving the feedback, and what feedback you are looking for,” says local visual artist Solange Belleforte.

“For example, is it marketable? Is it well composed?”

For visual art, the use of colour, perspective and texture may be examined.

As for the feedback I received on that piece of university writing, I swallowed my pride, went back to my desk and began the rewrite process.

I finished school.

And I learned some valuable lessons: though feedback is valuable, art is subjective, and someone’s opinion may be just that.

“I laughed, yes, out loud, and finally knew I really didn’t care whether people liked my work or not.

“I make it for my own pleasure and, if I am satisfied, then I met my own objectives.”

DIY peacock painting

T

he other day at the Artisan Market, I was talking to a client about painting and she told me she painted like a sevenyear-old.

I thought it was wonderful because seven-year-olds are some of the most talented artists I know.

It seems when we get a bit older we can lose that child-like vision of the world and forget how to paint.

I think artists never really grow up because we are very good at playing.

Here is a fun colourful piece to get those creative energies going again. We are using acrylic paint colours: black, white, cyan blue, cadmium yellow and magenta and a small, medium and large brush.

• I sketch my painting before I start.

It creates a map of where you want to take the painting.

I normally use a small brush and thin the paint out to a watery consistency to draw on the canvas.

If you make a mistake, paint over it with white paint and redraw it with black. This way you have many of your colour values sketched in before you start.

• Using white with a hint of yellow and blue, fill in the background and a few of the feathers to carry the colour

• Using blue with a hint of magenta, paint in the body and head of the peacock. Outline the feathers to create strong shapes that stand out.

• Using the mediumsized brush, fill in the feathers on the underside of the bird — yellow with some white mixed in with it.

Fill in the back part of the peacock’s body with magenta and carry the colour down into the cascading feathers.

You can blend the yellow mixture with magenta to create beautiful oranges. Add those colours into the feathers as well. Don’t worry about getting the colours exactly correct as in the photo.

This is your painting — express yourself how you like.

• At this point, draw circles in the feathers using the blue mixed for the body. Using the small brush, paint in three curly strands on

the top of the peacock’s head.

Add a bit of white to the magenta and paint the bottom section of the feathers with hot pink.

• We are nearly complete. Put a tree in the background using a thinned out black and magenta mixture.

Add a few green leaves, mixing blue and yellow together.

Add an eye and the beak.

• At this point, I tell students to have a good look at their painting.

Fix anything that bothers you by painting it over.

The beautiful thing about acrylic is that it dries in 15 minutes, so if you don’t like something, you can change it at any time.

I added a bit more blue and yellow to the feathers to make them pop out more.

Congratulations, you have created your own peacock painting.

Always remember to keep it light.

The best part of painting isn’t always the finished piece — it’s the act of staying creative and giving yourself a chance to have some fun.

‘A lot of it is based on fear’

I

n 2008, a New York mother was criticized for allowing her nine-year-old son to ride the subway alone.

Labelled “America’s worst mom,” Lenore Skenazy, spent time on The Daily Show and CBC and was interviewed by the New York Times and Washington Post among other news outlets as she argued for “free-range kids.”

“I have focused for the last eight years on how we got so afraid for our kids . . . that fascinates me, the fact that somehow we believe that our kids are incapable of doing the same things we did as children and surviving,” Skenazy said.

She’s providing presentations in Kamloops and surrounding areas this month about freerange parenting.

Skenazy will speak at Sandman Centre on Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m.

She will also be in Kelowna on Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Centre for Arts and at Salmon Arm’s Sullivan campus on Jan. 25, at 6:30 p.m.

Skenazy will ask parents questions like why won’t they allow their children to do the same things they

did when they were young?

“We talk about how come that is. There’s something in the culture that has made it almost impossible to raise our kids the way we were raised,” she said. “A lot of it is based on fear.”

Skenazy’s reasoning comes from the 24-hour news cycle, saying it exaggerates the likelihood of child abductions.

“It’s not like I hate the media,” she said.

“I just hate what the media feels like it sometimes has to do, which is show us the worst, scariest picture of the world so we’ll keep watching.”

Part of the reason for parental fear also comes from a litigious society, she said.

“When you live in a litigious society, you start thinking like a lawyer. Like, oh my god, I found a dime in my soup and I could’ve choked, and sued the place for a million dollars.”

Marketing plays another role, she said.

She used the example of the published list, of 10 of the most dangerous toys for children, noting how ridiculous the reasons were.

“I never present myself as a parenting expert . . . but you don’t need to be an expert to raise your kids,” she said.

“I can’t get your kid to take a nap or eat his broccoli, but I guess I’m an expert on fear.”

After eight years of talks and spreading her philosophy, she said people have

split opinions.

“At first when I started my blog, twice in a row my one was the most controversial of the mommy blogs,” Skenazy said.

“It was so radical what I was saying.

‘Maybe we should get a grip on the fact that the stranger danger, for the most part, is a myth.

“Certainly, it’s pre-

sented to us out of proportion with the reality.”

At first, the label of America’s worst mother bothered her and she worried for her children. But as time continued and the attention grew, she became accustomed to it and people began to accept the idea of freerange parenting.

“It’s [become] sort

of who I am,” Skenazy said.

Children are happier when they’re left to discover things on their own, she said.

“People feel happy when they have some control over their lives,” Skenazy said.

ost people come to Costa Rica for its tropical climes, secluded beaches and endless eco adventures.

For those who think they know the landscapes, or prefer a less trodden path, here are some gems to discover.

San Lucas Island

This one-time penal island — Costa Rica’s Alcatraz — has been transformed into a national wildlife refuge where howler monkeys, snakes, deer, pheasants and at least eight bat species are as abundant as its marine life.

Against such beauty, though, is a cruel history.

First, Spanish conquistadors imprisoned and slaughtered hundreds of the local Chara people on their sacred burial grounds. Then, it became a brutal prison where incarceration was a virtual death sentence.

Remnants of buildings, including cells embellished with graffiti, the church and infirmary, make for an evocative tour.

With its pastoral location on the Cartago mountainside, en route to the Irazu Volcano,

it’s hard to believe this is the country’s most haunted building.

Most people mistake this former hospital for mental and tuberculosis patients for a farm.

Since closing in the 1960s, the complex has lain abandoned and only recently became a visitor attraction.

Today, wander the property and its rather spooky, derelict buildings with their barred windows and feel its sudden cold breezes — even on a hot, sunny day.

The hallway full of children’s handprints is especially eerie.

Cabuya Island

Another ghostly spot is Cabuya Island at Cabo Blanco Park, perhaps because the

entire island has been a cemetery since time immemorial.

It is one of Costa Rica’s most remote areas.

Graves aside, discover terrific snorkeling for everything rainbowhued, as well as puffers, lobsters and plentiful, albeit evasive, seahorses.

Hiking, too, is magical because when the tide is low, you can cross over to the island from the mainland, as if walking on water.

For those looking for off-the-beaten-track destinations, where tourism hasn’t turned paradise into a commodity, Cabuya township also delivers.

Fuselage Fantasy

Finding a broken fuselage in the jungle is

somewhat disconcerting but the bright red vintage airplane (circa 1965) has morphed into one of the world’s most unusual hotels.

Tucked into Costa Verde’s rainforest canopy, overlooking a spectacular oceanfront, this luxurious spot is for those looking for a ‘lost’ experience.

If both Boeing 727 suites are booked, get a fuselage fix at El Avion.

Converted into a funky restaurant and bar, this is the CIA sister aircraft to the C-123 Provider shot down during the Iran-Contra affair in the 1980s.

must-see stop. Look for the church — a Gothic Renaissance style gem in its own right and you’ll find greenery shaped into arches, animals, Christ on the cross, an ox-drawn cart, a monkey on a motorcycle and even a helicopter.

The big white balls hanging from roadside stands and pulperias (small stores) are homemade cheeses, a specialty of the region, as are cajetas (caramel candy).

Totuguero Island

Accessible only by plane or boat, this beautiful island has the country’s most unique wildlife. It also has one

Since most arrive at night — and it’s an amazing spectacle to behold — beach access after 6 p.m. is only permitted with an official guide.

Although you can see individual turtles year round, the green sea and hawksbill turtle’s nesting season runs July to October (peaking in August) and leatherback turtles nest from February to April.

WHEN ANIMALS TALK

A

woman ended up caring for two female parrots belonging to her father, who had to enter a nursing home and couldn’t take them with him.

But he was kind of a rascal and taught them to say some rude phrases whenever anyone new walked into the room.

Their favourite was, “Hi, we’re hookers.

Want to have some fun?”

The lady was quite embarrassed by these two birds and was at her wit’s end.

However, because her father was so fond of them, she was reluctant get rid of them.

Then she remembered her priest raised parrots. In fact, he had two male parrots that were quite remarkable — they could even say the rosary.

So she asked his advice.

He suggested putting the two rude birds in with his birds on the chance they could teach them some better language.

So, she brought the birds over and placed them in the cage with the priest’s birds.

Of course, the first thing they said was, “Hi, we’re hookers. Want to have some fun?”

One of the priest’s parrots looked over at the other and said, “You can put away the rosary beads, Larry,

our prayers have been answered.”

While some birds are known to be able to mimic human language, speech is something uniquely human.

But there are two instances in the Bible in which animals miraculously speak.

One example is in the Book of Numbers.

Balak, the king of the Moabites, is terrified that the approaching Israelites will destroy his kingdom as they had already done with the Amorites and the Ammonites.

He sends messengers to Balaam, a powerful diviner, urging him to curse the Israelites.

Even though Balaam is a pagan priest, God speaks to him and commands him not to go with the messengers, as the Israelites are blessed.

So, Balaam refuses to go.

Balak, desperate, sends a second delegation with a huge bribe to persuade Balaam to change his mind.

This time, God authorizes Balaam to go with the delegation, but only on the condition he says what God tells him to say.

What follows is a little puzzling.

Scripture says God was “very angry” that Balaam went with the princes of Moab, even though He authorized him to go.

One explanation is that God knew Balaam’s heart.

He likely perceived Balaam would succumb to Balak’s bribery and tell him what he wanted to hear.

God had to employ a miracle to convince Balaam with whom who he was really dealing. So, he sent an angel to block the donkey’s path.

The donkey perceived the angel in his path, balked, pressed Balaam’s leg up against a wall, then finally laid down underneath him.

Balaam became enraged and beat the poor donkey three times.

Finally, the donkey said, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times? Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?”

Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes to the angel and he finally agreed to say only what the Lord told him to say. The painting of the scene

by Rembrandt is quite remarkable.

Obviously, the talking donkey is a miraculous event meant to illustrate the power of God over his creation — and his special love for the people of Israel.

The most prominent example is in the Book of Genesis, however.

The serpent is described as “more crafty than any of the wild animals” and successfully persuades Eve to eat the forbidden fruit.

He says, “God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

The serpent in the Garden of Eden can be seen as a metaphor for Satan/Lucifer, the enemy of God and all of God’s people.

The Hebrew word for serpent, “nahash,” also means shiny.

Interestingly, the name Lucifer means “the shining one.”

Later, in the Book of Revelation, Satan is called “the great dragon”, and “that ancient serpent.”

Satan’s portrayal as a deadly snake is framed in the first and last books of the Bible.

Other cultures also associate the word snake with “enemy.”

For example, the Objiwa called their Dakota enemies “Sioux,” which means “snakes” in their language Significantly, Jesus

calls his Pharisee opponents “vipers.”

Non-Christians find such stories literally incredible, in the original sense of the word.

At face value, they are.

But faith means a suspension of disbelief.

There is nothing impossible with God and accepting that God can do miracles is an integral part of the Christian faith.

And that includes endowing an animal with the power of speech.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.

The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
