The City of Kamloops will finish the year down in overall construction activity, but it’s been a good year for homebuilders, particularly those building multifamily units.

While the final tally is not yet complete, city officials expect about $158-million worth of building permits issued for 2016.

That compares to $179.4 million in 2015, which was driven by stronger commercial and industrial numbers.

That included the new Cascades

Casino in Aberdeen.

“We saw a big increase in the number of residential units created [in 2016],” said Jason Dixon, the city’s building and engineering development manager.

The city recorded 589 permits for new homes, up about 27 per cent over 2015.

That growth came largely in multifamily units.

Values increased to $126.4 million in 2016 from 120.6 million in 2015.

“We did see an increase in values and that lines up with the increase in units.”

Looking ahead for 2017, Dixon said he expects to see a rebound in commercial and industrial construction

following the ebb in 2016.

The latest rental survey by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation found the vacancy rate for apartment buildings in Kamloops at 1.1 per cent.

Another area of growth in 2017 is expected to be a boom in apartment construction, following decades of inactivity.

“People are realizing that and projects are coming to fruition,” Dixon said.

Cross Developments plans to build 375 rental units across from Thompson Rivers University, while Kelson Group is building 110 units on Summit Drive in Sahali. The latter project is expected to be under construction in 2017.

At least 360 people have been immunized in response to an alert issued by the Interior Health Authority after an employee at the Dairy Queen restaurant in Clearwater was diagnosed with hepatitis A. Immunization clinics were held in Clearwater, where 336 people were vaccinated, and in Kamloops, where 23 people were vaccinated.

One person in Williams Lake was immunized.

No additional cases have been confirmed and Interior Health said there is no ongoing source of infection as the infected employee is not working at the restaurant.

According to Interior Health, all food handlers are undergoing vaccination to ensure there is no further spread of the virus.

The last immunization clinic was held Friday at Dr. Helmcken Memorial Hospital in Clearwater.

The health authority said the vaccine can prevent the disease, but only if given within 14 days of exposure. It is advising anyone who feels they are at risk and haven’t been vaccinated to visit the hospital for testing.

According to a press release issued by the health authority, hepatitis A is a virus that affects the liver.

“Symptoms usually develop 15 to 50 days after exposure and include nausea, abdominal cramps, fever, dark urine and/or yellowing of the skin,” it stated.

The illness can last for several weeks, but Interior Health said the virus goes away on its own in most cases. People can only contract the hepatitis A virus once, after which your body builds up a defence.

The health authority said the virus is spread through personal contact or contaminated food handled by an infected person.

Anyone who ate at Clearwater Dairy Queen between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Dec. 8 and Dec. 9, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Dec. 10, between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Dec. 11, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Dec. 15, between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Dec. 16 and between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Dec. 17 and Dec. 18 should be vaccinated, according to Interior Health.

Police are on the hunt for a killer after an apparent fight on a North Kamloops street left one man dead — and investigators are asking anyone with video of the incident to hand it over.

Emergency crews were called to an area on Wood Street near Tranquille Road just before 3 a.m. on Friday for a report of a fight in progress.

Paramedics and Mounties found an unconscious 42-year-old man on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

For much of Friday morning, the body remained under blankets on the snowy sidewalk as investigators scoured the area. A two-block portion of Wood Street between Tranquille Road and Hilltop Avenue was taped off.

Police are keeping tight-lipped about the inci-

dent, saying only that two “recently acquainted” men became involved in an argument at a local bar that eventually escalated to violence outside.

The Duchess is less than a block from where the victim was found, but RCMP Cpl. Jody Neuls refused to name the “local licensed establishment” in which the men had been arguing.

Neuls said no weapons were involved and that the incident was isolated. She also said investigators believe there were multiple witnesses and asked for anyone with video evidence to come forward.

“If anyone has video of this event, please consider turning it over to police,” she said.

Hayley Anderson, who lives in the Thompson Court apartment building across the street from where the victim was found, said she was awoken around the time of the slaying by the sound of people running.

“We heard running and that’s it,” she told KTW. “The running went past our living room window. Next thing you know, there’s police everywhere.”

Anderson said she wasn’t sure at first if something had happened.

“You get a little bit desensitized to the noise,” she said. “You’re always hearing noises and sounds, but this is a little startling. But I’m almost glad we were oblivious to the fact of what was going on, because then you feel the need to get involved and who knows what can happen.”

The victim is from Kamloops, which is the only information about him released by police.

The homicide is the fourth of 2016 in Kamloops.

Charges have been laid in the previous three deaths and the accused are in various stages of the court process.

A Hyundai Sonata collided with another vehicle at Summit Drive and McGill Road at about 10 a.m.

The Sonata was not insured and had a stolen licence plate on it at the time of the accident.

iki Edgeworth wouldn’t let two visa rejections and a significant lack of funding keep Steven Kega from studying in Canada.

The Rwandan has dreamt of continuing his education in natural resource management in hopes of taking his knowledge home to improve the country’s agriculture practices.

For two years, Kega has been looking forward to his first day of class at Thompson Rivers University — finally coming in January.

The 27-year-old made a significant impression on Edgeworth who in 2014 travelled to the community of Gashora on a volunteer trip with Developing World Connections (DWC).

Kega was working as an intern with DWC’s partner organization in Rwanda for the chance to learn more about food security.

Since then, Edgeworth has moved mountains to help Kega enrol at TRU, overcoming several obstacles to bring him to Kamloops this fall.

“It was a natural connection,” Edgeworth said. “He is my son. I now have three daughters and a son. That comes from within the heart and whatever comes from within the heart is real. How do you explain that? It’s really hard to explain.”

Kega’s family fled Rwanda during the 1994 genocide, but his father was determined to return and help rebuild his country.

That passionate commitment to the homeland also drives Kega’s ambitions. His desire to pursue higher education overseas came in high school.

“I grew up in a community where most of the people are farmers,” Kega said. “I feel sorry for them, I feel sad because the traditional way they do agriculture, it’s sad to see how they use the effort . . .

“What they spend on growing their crops is not equal to what they harvest — not because of the soil, not because of the climate, because of the knowledge they have, which pushed me to say ‘OK. Why not study agriculture and come back to help this community?’”

Kega completed his undergraduate degree in Rwanda, but knew he would need to travel to Europe or North America for higher calibre master’s and doctorate studies.

Inspired by his story, Edgeworth pledged to raise money to pay for Kega’s Canadian education. It’s only one of the challenges she faced in helping him realize his dream.

Kega’s student visa was denied twice, partly because of his lack of travel history and questions of whether he would return home. He was at one point labelled a “flight risk.”

Kega once travelled 28 hours by bus to the Canadian embassy in Nairobi just to submit his application.

Edgeworth eventually made the trip back to Rwanda and reunited with Kega in August.

Without word on his third visa attempt, she boarded her return flight heartbroken, unable to bring him with her.

“We cried for two hours,”

Edgeworth said. “My dream was to bring him home. It was extremely disappointing.”

Just as they were beginning to consider American universities, the reward for many hours of paperwork and travel finally came. Kega learned he was approved to study in Kamloops and, in November, he boarded the first flight he had ever taken.

“We couldn’t book it fast enough,” Edgeworth said.

Kega will begin upgrading requirements in January before starting his master’s degree in September — sooner than expected. Now Edgeworth has the mountainous task of fasttracking the tuition fundraising for his graduate studies. She has already raised $32,000, but will need several thousand more.

“He is a unique individual with all this talent and skill that just needs to broaden and help his country,” Edgeworth said.

“Helping Steven helps 20, helps 50, helps 100. You help one, you are helping the whole country because he will take it back and he will help rebuild.”

Kega is splitting his time living with Edgeworth and fellow DWC volunteers Rick and Sandi Heney, who met Kega on their volunteer trip in 2013 He left his parents and seven siblings behind, but is happy to have joined his second family in Canada for the opportunity of a lifetime and the chance for a better future in Rwanda.

“How can my dad go back when he doesn’t have anything, and go back to say ‘Whatever I have, anyway I can help, I’m going to help?’” Kega said.

“Me, how can I not help when I have that chance, that knowledge and everything to help?”

Kamloops recorded four homicides in 2016, which is about average given the numbers in recent years.

Local RCMP serious-crimes investigators were kept busy in January looking into two slayings — the deaths of Joshua Southwell on Jan. 22 and Dennis Adolph four days later.

Eric Charlie was arrested in March and charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of Southwell, who was stabbed outside a

restaurant on Tranquille Road on the North Shore.

Gordon Paul Camille is facing the same charge in relation to the death of Adolph, who was found dead in a Valleyview motel room.

In August, the body of Debra Novacluse was discovered in a motel room in Aberdeen.

David Albert Miller was arrested in Ontario in September and charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death.

His charge has since been upgraded to first-degree murder.

The final homicide of 2016 in Kamloops took place early Friday morning.

Local birders find 75 species in count CAM FORTEMS

A lone gyrfalcon tops the list of birds spotted by volunteers in the Kamloops area as part of the annual Christmas bird count.

Organizer Rick Howie said volunteers recorded about 75 species of birds, from chickadees and eagles to pygmy nuthatches and swans.

“Species-wise, it’s pretty much bang on average,” he said. “It’s pretty good with the weather so cold.”

That cold snap experienced earlier in December likely killed or drove some birds from the region, as can deeper-than-usual snowpack.

Those temperatures likely pushed gull-like birds from the area.

While the overall count is not yet available, Howie expects it to come in at an average level.

Volunteers fan out to count birds and species in a 12-kilometre radius of Mount Dufferin. They are dispatched to a number of key areas minutes off repeatedly observed each that are year.

This year, volunteers also counted 160 chukars, an introduced game bird. A number of years ago, a local count of 90 chukars was a Canadawide high.

Howie said when the numbers are totalled across the country, it could produce another Canadian hot spot for the Eurasian native.

Another introduced Eurasian native, the incessantly cooing Eurasian collared dove, reached a count of 150.

A smaller number of Clark’s nutcrackers were spotted.

Howie said that could be a result of the loss of ponderosa pine in the city due to the mountain pine beetle epidemic that peaked a decade ago, killing 90 per cent of those trees in Kamloops.

Learning about learning

ast spring, Premier Christy Clark announced that under the new B.C. school curriculum, all students would receive at least 15 hours of “coding” during the middle school years.

If you are my age, you may have wondered what this meant.

I know I did — and I went searching for answers.

I visited Tracy Poelzer, our district technology co-ordinator, who showed me some of the robot project kits she has acquired and developed to support computer coding as part of the new curriculum.

Teachers are now using robots and coding exercises to increase students’ computational thinking and problem-solving skills.

Project kits include the equipment and programing instructions (coding) for the robot to carry out a function, such as movement or travel.

Considerable trial and error is involved in the programming of robots and careful calculation and co-operation between student groups is required.

Students also draw on logic, math and problem-solving skills to undertake successful programing exercises.

While intended for students in grades 6 through 9, primary teachers are also introducing simple coding opportunities to their students and Poelzer has also created kits for that age group.

Even primary students must employ logical and simple mathematical thinking to program their robot to move on a grid or follow an obstacle course.

This can be challenging.

For example, when using Sphero robots, which are small plexi-glass spheres, students use an iPad to access a coding app that displays a list of actions related to their task.

This, in itself, does not seem too hard.

However, students must also determine the distance between obstacles, the required speed of the sphere and the time each distance travelled will take before they can successfully move their sphere — multi-step processes with different kinds of thinking involved.

Yet Poelzer has received feedback from teachers who say students who traditionally lose interest during regular instruction tend to work patiently for longer periods of time when faced with coding challenges.

Students seem engaged and experience success. They may even find a hidden talent.

In early October, I was among audience members who watched demonstrations of programming and ingenuity in technology

teacher Darren Seibel’s Grade 9 class at Chase elementary.

Each group of students managed to program their robot to go through a number of tasks.

One group of students went a step further and replaced the treads on their robot with Lego wheels and were controlling the robot with a cellphone.

On my next visit to the school, all robots had been modified with wheels, cellphone controllers and more sophisticated programming. I should mention the unit had long ago been completed, but these students were so interested in the opportunity that they continued to work on their own time.

During recent visits to schools, several Kamloops-Thompson trustees have been treated to a variety of examples in which students are learning sophisticated programming and have similar stories to share.

Regardless of whether students continue with their programming interests or end up making it an eventual career or not, these skills are highly beneficial for learners.

As a trustee, it’s exciting to see how teachers are introducing and guiding their students through coding challenges as our district continues to embrace the redesigned BC Education Plan.

BEWARE FOREIGN WE CANNOT LET THEM DIE OWNERSHIP IN HEALTH CARE Editor: Did you know a Chinese company has made an application to purchase a chain of retirement homes across Canada, a chain that includes Kamloops Seniors Village (‘Kamloops seniors’ care home part of proposed sale to Chinese company,’ Dec. 1)?

Do you think a Chinese company will not hire staff that is not Canadian?

Look what happened in Fort McMurray.

After the fire, South African workers were used to replace Canadian workers and put families out of work. I know of such a family.

I wonder if the Chinese businessman who attended Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s fundraising dinner and gave $200,000 to the Trudeau Foundation is an owner or partner in this firm that wants to buy Retirement Concepts?

If so, it’s a done deal.

Kristy Anderson, director of media relations for the B.C. Ministry of Health, said government expects the transition to be seamless and that the patients residing in the facilities will continue to receive the same quality of care.

She has to be kidding.

Health Minister Terry Lake said, “Cedar Tree has assured patients’ families and staff that if does not intend to make any change to day-today operations.”

Lake is gullible.

Editor: I really get a good laugh reading letters to the editor about the opioid crisis in this province.

It would seem a great number of people in Kamloops have the opinion that drug users make bad choices, shouldn’t have access to medical services and should essentially be left to die because of their choices.

If we apply this logic to other personal choices, we can list a few others that deserve an unofficial death penalty.

Every year, many Canadians are treated for smoking-related diseases such as lung cancer and emphysema. They made a

personal choice by smoking and yet we continue to treat their medical issues.

Every year, the medical system treats people with alcohol-related illnesses, such as cirrhosis of the liver, gout and pancreatitis, and many die of alcohol poisoning.

Should people who are injured in drunk-driving accidents in which they are at fault also be left to suffer without support of the medical system?

In Canada, 25.4 per cent of adults are listed as obese.

Sure, people attribute some of this to genetics, but for the most part, obesity is caused by people eating too much food.

Obese people are at risk

of suffering from cardiovascular problems, diabetes and hypertension. They are more likely to suffer from a stroke than other people.

All these health problems can be traced back to personal choices (although many opioid addicts started their addiction from a doctor’s prescription).

If we refuse to help addicts, we should refuse to help smokers, alcoholics and obese people.

If you have a friend or loved one who smokes, drinks too much or eats more than they should, would you be OK with letting them die?

Probably not.

Kamloops council at halfway point of term The Tournament Capital’s nine elected local-government officials reflect on the last two years and look ahead ANDREA KLASSEN

Mayor Peter Milobar rattles off a quick list of big ticket projects when asked what he feels council has accomplished in the past two years: refurbishing Overlanders Bridge, widening Columbia Street and a $10-million PETER MILOBAR emergency water intake on the North Thompson River council agreed to fund this year.

They are all projects with a political component in common — they were passed with a strong majority or unanimous votes from council, not via 5-4 splits.

“It’s certainly a challenging group in terms of strong personalities and diverse personalities,” Milobar said of the current group of councillors.

“That’s not to say it’s a bad thing, it’s just a reality with the makeup of the council. When you look at the final votes in the direction we’re trying to take, conversation may take a little while, but typically it’s majority votes heading in the right direction more often than not.”

Milobar shrugs off some of the city’s split votes, including its debate on cosmetic-pesticide use. While he’s still not convinced a ban was a good idea, he said it likely hasn’t changed daily life for most residents.

“Those aren’t the biggest issues going on in the city that I’m going to worry about,” he said. “If council had voted against doing the Overlanders Bridge deck until it couldn’t be used and we didn’t have a bridge, that would be a much bigger concern.”

When he looks at the halfway point of his first term compared to the halfway point in his second stint at Kamloops City Hall, Donovan Cavers said he is startled by how much faster the latDONOVAN CAVERS ter has been.

Whether wine should be on the shelves of Save-On Foods in Sahali was a hotly contested issue for Kamloops city council in 2016. Ultimately, the decision was made to allow the grocery store to stock B.C. VQA bottles.

“Thinking back to when it was three year terms, we would be one year from the next election, which is crazy,” he said.

One difference Cavers thinks may have contributed to that is KGHM Ajax filing its application for environmental review of its proposed copper and gold mine south of Aberdeen.

The application sparked the city’s own independent review of the project and the issue has popped up at meetings ever since.

Workload aside, Cavers feels council hasn’t changed dramatically from his first term, which he noted also included councillors with a wide range of viewpoints.

“The previous term, there was a lot of 5-4 votes as well. I don’t think it’s any more split than previous terms or than other councils around the province,” he said. “I think it’s healthier to have that than slates where there’s 9-0 or 8-1 votes all the time.”

Cavers believes some of the biggest changes council has made have been around changes to tax-exemption bylaws and developmentcost charges, which will give developers more incentives to densify the down-

town and North Shore.

Tina Lange has plenty of praise for her fellow councillors, even when they disagree — perhaps especially when they disagree.

“Because we’re so freaking diverse, and we really are, we cover the opinions of the whole city,” she said. TINA LANGE “I learn something every day from my colleagues there. They represent a different group of people than me, or their views are different than mine, and it gives me a different view of what we should be looking at.”

Lange said council has made some bold decisions in the first half of its term, including its move to ban cosmetic pesticides and its work with the city’s social agencies.

“Things like that are pretty hard to do and take a council that’s got real strength,” she said. “It’s a bold move — at least for us to do it was very bold. We’ve done some amazing work.”

While a wide range of

views means more arguing over issues, Lange believes that is preferable to councils that march in sync on every issue.

“If we don’t sit there and disagree, why are we even there? We might as well let staff make the decisions,” she said.

Lange said she also appreciates the work councillors have done on Ajax, even those who don’t share her opinion that the mine should not proceed.

Coun. Arjun Singh

In some ways, Arjun Singh doesn’t think the current term is much different from others he has served on council.

Yes, there have been some controversial issues.

But, the thirdterm councillor said, that’s nothing new.

“Every ARJUN term of SINGH council has difficult emotional issues,” he said. “In my first term, it was backyard fires, last term was the pay raise and Ajax was getting its feet.

“I think having Ajax as kind of a overall contextual

issue that’s always there, it’s challenging for us to sometimes remind ourselves we don’t disagree on that much.”

Singh, like many other councillors, believes the current council is one of the most ideologically diverse to come to city hall, but he noted councillors have been able to remain friendly when they disagree over issues.

“I think that serves the community well because Kamloops is a very diverse community,” he said. “And I think sometimes people might say there’s fighting, there’s arguments — I don’t see that. I see robust discussion.”

Singh said he’s pleased to see the city making progress on its official community plan, which could see the city promoting higher density and more eco-friendly living.

Coun. Ken Christian

When Ken Christian peers at the remainder of the term, one issue he’d like to deal with isn’t just a municipal responsibility.

“If there were any other thing in Kamloops that had ended 32 lives this year, we would be all over it — if it

was a crosswalk, or had it been something to do with a disease outbreak, or a fire or something, action would have been taken,” Christian said, referring KEN CHRISTIAN to the ongoing fentanyl crisis, which has spiked overdose numbers across the province this year.

Christian said there are places where council can look to help on the issue, such as an increase of support for the Car 40 program, which pairs RCMP officers and mental-health workers.

Getting naloxone kits — which include the antidote that temporarily counteract the effects of an opioid overdose — into the hands of firefighters was another step.

At times, Christian said, council debates seem to drag on. He referenced a recent lengthy debate about the cost of tulip bulbs, but noted they do tend to represent a wide range of residents’ views.

“I don’t think there’s a voice that goes unheard in the positions people take around the council table,” he said. “Sometimes it’s cumbersome, but it certainly is democratic.”

Coun. Dieter Dudy

As the only councillor this term with no previous city hall experience, getting fully up to speed on how the city works is one accomplishment Dieter Dudy points to this term.

Overall, the rookie politician said he feels good about council’s performance so far.

“What I like about this council is it’s extremely diverse. If we had everybody the same and we agreed with one segment of society, I guess they’d DIETER DUDY all be happy, but I think we’re trying to address the needs of everybody in our city,” he said.

While some councillors share certain philosophies, Dudy noted he and Denis Walsh — who ran together as part of a group of candidates called Vision Kamloops — don’t vote

together every time an issue divides councillors.

Asked what he sees for the term ahead, Dudy said that, after votes on pesticides, wine in grocery stores and similarly heated issues, “I think we had all our contentious issues in the first two years. I don’t know what else we could possibly get at.”

Dudy said council has done a good job of taking in views from a wide swath of the community and not letting issues drag on for long periods of time (a certain proposed copper and gold mine notwithstanding).

Coun. Marg Spina

Marg Spina, who is taking leave as the new year begins to fight breast cancer, said her third term on council has been her busiest.

Spina believes this council has the strongest individual views of the three with which she has sat, but noted the city is also dealing with larger MARG issues — the SPINA proposed Ajax mine, questions about adapting to climate change and supporting social services.

“Our world has changed so quickly,” she said.

“Council of 2004 didn’t have to worry about GHGs and carbon neutral. They didn’t have to pay a tax to the provincial government

if they put out too many emissions.”

Spina feels council has worked together well, though noted individual councillors don’t agree on everything.

“I think we all appreciate that we come from different places, we have difference constituents and we try to be respectful of other people’s opinions, even if we don’t agree with them,” she said. “I think that’s the best that you can have in a democracy. Are there different opinions? Yes. Are there many times a split vote? Yes. But that’s who elected us.”

She counts council’s consultation on the future of pools on the North Shore, which included public meetings in every neighbourhood after it was revealed Westsyde Pool would need millions of dollars in repairs, as one proud moment this term.

“I really think that what we did reflected the will of the taxpayers,” she said of the term so far.

Coun. Denis Walsh

While talking to KTW, Denis Walsh was in the midst of launching a campaign he believes will improve council’s relationship with the public.

Currently, council agendas go out to the public at 4 p.m. on the Friday before DENIS WALSH the next

council meeting.

Walsh doesn’t think that leaves the public or the media enough time to get familiar with issues up for debate, or for councillors to research issues while city staffers are at work and available for questions.

Walsh said councillors usually aren’t aware of what’s coming up ahead of time, adding researching issues by speaking to staff and politicians in other communities is challenging outside of business days, “And sometimes these agendas are so heavy,” he said. “We have the weekend basically to absorb and dig into it and research it . . . I think to improve city council requires earlier access to the issues coming before council.”

He’s hoping to see the city release its agenda up to a week ahead of time, which he believes would also allow for more community debate on matters of the day.

That change aside, count Walsh as a fan of the current group around the council table.

“The last council I was on I felt didn’t really represent our diversity at all,” said Walsh, who was elected to a term on council in 2011 before leaving politics for three years.

Coun. Pat Wallace

Pat Wallace is blunt about the year she’s had on council.

“I don’t know that this has been the best year I’ve

spent,” she said.

“We seem to be debating things like chickens in PAT the city. I felt WALLACE we should perhaps think about the future and longterm planning and things that we can do. To my mind, we’ve spent a bit of time

on showmanship, which is maybe not the best place to have that.”

Wallace feels grandstanding and philosophical debates over issues, including the proposed Ajax mine, have been a problem this term.

“I think we’re picking agenda issues and they’re going through on a 5-4 vote,” she said. “A lot of peo-

ple have asked me, what’s wrong? I don’t know. I know the way I vote.”

With the Ajax process still in suspended animation, Wallace believes council needs to take a step back from the issue until there is new information or until the company requests a meeting to discuss a benefit agreement proposed by the city this summer.

2017 a year to shape Canada, governor general says in final New Year’s message THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA — Governor General David Johnston is marking the start of what’s likely his last few months as the Queen’s representative in Canada by urging all Canadians to make 2017, Canada’s 150th birthday, a legacy year.

“This year we celebrate, and we stand at a threshold. We have a rare, oncein-a-generation opportunity to think about Canada, and to look to the future,’’ Johnston said in his annual New Year’s message.

“We have a chance to reflect, to reaffirm, to look ahead and say: We love this country. We’ve come so far.

Let’s make it even better.’’

Johnston’s term is up in September, but how

his replacement will be selected has yet to be determined.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told The Canadian Press in a year-end interview that he hasn’t given much thought yet on how the next governor general will be appointed.

But he said whatever the process, it will likely be in keeping with what he characterized as his government’s approach to appointments in general.

governor general didn’t put a tremendous emphasis on bringing in a broad range of perspectives and voices for me to choose from.”

Johnston, Canada’s 28th governor general, was appointed in 2010 after a

committee proposed a list of names to then-prime minister Stephen Harper.

Two years later, Harper struck a formal panel to advise on future vice-regal appointments and Trudeau said he’ll review that system before deciding on how he’ll go forward.

“I’m not going to change things just to reinvent the wheel,’’ he said.

“If there is a good process that we can improve by making more open and transparent and more diverse, that I will probably do.’’

Johnston’s term should have ended in 2015 but it was extended by Harper ahead of that year’s election.

Among the projects he’s worked on during his time in office has been expanding the reach of the country’s honours system, including the Order of Canada, which celebrates its own 50th anniversary in 2017.

The motto for that award — they desire a better country — is a fitting motto for the nation’s birthday celebrations as all

Canadians desire a better country, Johnston said.

“We’re so fortunate to live in Canada, but there’s so much more work to do,” he said.

“Let’s ensure this is a country of both excellence and equality of opportunity for all.

“Let’s work towards achieving reconciliation with Aboriginal peoples.

“Let’s continue to celebrate diversity. It’s a strength, one that has allowed us to build a society that is the envy of the world.’’

2016: The year of the new industrial revolution

T

he main message of 2016 was that we are entering a period of economic and political upheaval comparable to the industrial revolution of 1780 to 1850 — and nothing expressed that message more clearly than Donald Trump’s appointment of Andrew Puzder as secretary of labour.

But it’s clear neither man understands the message.

Puzder bears a large part of the responsibility for fulfilling Trump’s election promise to “bring back” America’s lost industrial jobs: seven million in the past 35 years.

That’s what created the Rust Belt and the popular anger that put Trump in power. But Puzder is a fast-food magnate who got rich by shrinking his costs — and he has never met a computer he didn’t like.

“They’re always polite, they always upsell, they never take a vacation, they never show up late, there’s never a slip-and-fall or an age-, sex-, or racediscrimination case,” he rhapsodized.

They also never take lunch or toilet breaks, they’ll work 24 hours a day and they don’t have to be paid.

So, out with the workers and in with the robots.

It was not evil foreigners who “stole” most of those seven-million American jobs and will probably eliminate up to 50-million more in the next 20 years.

It’s the “intelligent machines” that did most of the damage, starting with simple assemblyline robots and ATMs (every automated teller machine contains the ghosts of three bank tellers).

But the automation keeps moving up the skill sets.

The first self-driving cars are now on the road in the United States.

A 2013 study concluded 47 per cent of existing jobs in the U.S. are vulnerable to automation in the next 20 years and the numbers are as bad or worse for other developed countries.

This is what is really driving the populist revolution that caused two of the world’s oldest democracies to make bizarre, self-harming political choices in the past year.

First Brexit, then Trump.

Leaving the European Union will hurt Britain’s economy badly and putting a man like Trump in the White House is a serious mistake.

Yet half the voters in each country were so angry they didn’t care about the likely negative consequences of their vote.

There is more to come.

Beppe Grillo’s populist Five-Star Movement may win the next election in Italy. Marine Le Pen’s National Front (no longer openly antiSemitic, but still basically neo-fascist) could win the French presidential election next spring.

The Netherlands and Germany may see hardright, anti-immigrant parties in governing coalitions after their

forthcoming elections.

Some people fear we are seeing a re-run of the 1930s.

Economic growth has slowed since the crash of 2008 and unemployment is much higher than it looks.

The official U.S. unemployment figure is only five per cent, but almost one-third of American men between the ages of 25 and 54 are economically inactive, as the statisticians describe that grey area between working and not working.

So, angry populist leaders are popping up again all across the developed world.

The Dirty Thirties ended in the Second World War and there are obvious parallels today.

The European Union is fraying at the edges and Trump has talked about curtailing U.S. support of NATO. He has also threatened to slap huge tariffs on Chinese exports to the U.S. and it’s probably a bad idea to push China too hard when it is already in grave economic trouble.

But this is not the 1930s.

There are no ranting dictators promising revenge for lost wars and government benefits mean unemployment is no longer a catastrophe for most people in Western countries.

The old white working class (and some of the middle class) are angry because jobs are disappearing and because immigration is changing the ethnic balance in their countries, but they are not angry enough to want a war.

Trump’s election means we are in for a wild ride during the next four years, but he will ultimately disappoint his supporters because he is barking up the

wrong tree.

Trump cannot bring back the jobs that were lost because most of them were not lost to his favourite culprits: free trade and uncontrolled immigration.

Even if Trump understood this, he could not admit it in public because there is nothing he can do about it.

He might ban immigrants from coming in to “steal American jobs” and he can tear up freetrade deals to his heart’s content, but his own cabinet contains people who have built their careers on eliminating jobs through automation.

This is change on the scale of the first industrial revolution and you can’t fight it.

Then again, you really don’t need to.

American industry has shed seven-million jobs since 1979, but the value of U.S. factory production has more than doubled (in constant dollars).

Jobs are being destroyed, not wealth.

It is not a disaster for a rich society to reach a point where the same goods are being produced and the same services are being provided, but most people no longer have to work 40 or 50 hours a week (in jobs most of them hate).

Rather, it’s not a disaster unless having no work means having no money nor selfrespect.

The main political task for the next generation (post-Trump) in the developed countries will be to ensure those without work have an income they can live on and don’t lose their selfrespect.

Other ways will doubtless be suggested, but one way of achieving this that is already getting attention is a universal basic income

(UBI).

The UBI would provide everybody with enough on which to live.

Since everybody got it, there would be no stigma involved in living on it. And 53 per cent of today’s jobs will still be there in 2033, so those who really wanted to work could top up their UBI with earned income.

There would still be millionaires.

The first national referendum on UBI was held in Switzerland in June. It was a radical new idea, so of course it was overwhelmingly rejected.

But this idea will not go away and there will be more like it.

Rich countries can stay rich and stable if they understand the nature of the task, but developing countries may face a grim future.

No UBI for them as they are not rich enough, not even China.

But automation is also eating into their newly gained industrial jobs.

A recent Citibank report estimated 77 per cent of Chinese jobs are at risk from automation.

In India, there is talk of premature deindustrialization, which means industrial jobs in India may be peaking now and will then go into decline.

That would not just mean continuing poverty for many, but huge political turmoil — populist revolutions and super-Trumps.

The future (including the near future) will be quite interesting.

The BIG business of health care in B.C. DALE BASS • STAFF REPORTER • DALE@KAMLOOPSTHISWEEK.COM With a budget of more than $2 billion and roughly 20,000 employees doing the work, sitting on the board of directors for Interior Health Authority brings with it a lot of work.

Just ask Frank Quinn.

The Kamloops lawyer just finished a six-year appointment to the board, putting in, on average, about a week’s worth of his time every month on the many aspects of running the business and providing health care to the Interior region.

“It’s an extremely complex industry,” Quinn said, one that took him a bit of time to understand.

Erwin Malzer, who also saw his term end in December after serving for a decade, the last two years as its chair, considers “the health-care sector the most complex industry there is — and it will soon be the fastest-changing one.”

To provide the oversight the board must do, it is essential to have members who bring a varied skill set to the job, Malzer said.

Quinn, for example, a lawyer in Kamloops with plenty of experience in development, brought those skills to the work, as did Malzer with his background as a management consultant.

Like most of the board members, the two men have other similar experience.

Quinn, for example, has served on the board of the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce, B.C. Housing Management Committee, Ponderosa Lodge Seniors Home, University College of the Cariboo and Thompson Rivers University.

Malzer is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors of B.C. and is a managing partner of Executive Advisory Services, which focuses on governance and advisory board consulting and coaching.

Quinn said he approached the work with four key areas in focus: the cost of providing health care, the quality of patient care, capital projects required and human relations.

Board members receive a sti-

pend for the work they do, which includes more than the monthly board meetings.

Everyone is on a committee, and there is always ongoing discussion that takes place on issues.

“Dozens of emails almost daily,” Quinn said.

He has always donated the money he receives to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation and the Kamloops Food Bank and said many others on the board also quietly donate the money back or to a charity of their choice.

While he wouldn’t describe the work as enjoyable, Quinn said it has been rewarding.

“I understood little on health care before and I like to think I understand it better,” he said.

Quinn has learned, for example, that while providing health care is a business, in another way it’s not because it’s something that must be provided and comes at a cost.

He quipped that when Tommy Douglas “established the idea of universal health care, he didn’t

think we’d be paying for parking.”

Nor did Douglas likely envision the need for facilities such as the new clinical services building that opened last fall at Royal Inland Hospital — but such is the shift in caring for people.

“The size of the demographic demanding care goes up every year because of the aging population,” Quinn said, noting that means a need for more money to keep the system running.

Malzer agreed, saying it’s time to look at health care in a different way.

“We just can’t do what we’ve done the way we’ve done it,” he said. “We just can’t do it.

“We’re spending tons of capital to build acute-care facilities that can’t sustain the system. There are too many at the ERs in hospitals who shouldn’t be there.”

They both see the need for more team-based care going forward, something about which new board chair John O’Fee has also spoken.

Earlier this year, O’Fee, a lawyer

and former Kamloops councillor, said two new primary-care clinics scheduled to open in 2017 on the North Shore exemplify how health-care provision is changing.

Each will be a turn-key operation and will have doctors and other medical professionals on staff who can provide care in specific areas.

Both aspects provide relief for the primary-care doctors; they don’t have to spend money to buy necessary equipment, which is a challenge for new doctors, and they won’t have to see patients for issues that others on staff can address.

“There are times a physician needs to see you, but not all the time,” Malzer said.

He also wants to see other aspects of health care reviewed.

“We have designed systems for the convenience of those in it,” he said. “It’s no coincidence hospitals are lightly staffed on holidays and weekends. We need to change that. It all has to change, massive change.”

The banking industry is heading in the same direction.

We are already seeing what you might call virtual branches being tested in a few markets.

Walk into your bank and you find a half-dozen machines

that will not only dispense cash and allow you to pay your bills, but also give you foreign currency and renew your mortgage up your credit limit.

There are no tellers. There are perhaps two people roaming the space with a tablet, there to answer your questions or point you in the right direction.

If you need to see someone about a new mortgage or other more detailed

banking matters, you will most likely have to make an appointment online or talk with one of the happy tablet-wielding attendants at your virtual branch.

I would imagine these personal financial managers will be in an office somewhere close by.

From a banking perspective, the company will save a great deal of capital with a reduction in labour costs and much lower

real-estate needs and expenses.

How will you feel about not really having a branch? Some will embrace it and others will find it challenging.

I know I might be in a bank once or twice a year and that is usually to get foreign currency. I do 95 per cent of my banking online.

Whether you like it or not, always remember the banking industry makes

up around 30 per cent of the Toronto Stock Market.

If these changes make the banks more profitable, your equity funds or positions should go up.

Where I find this point interesting is that, as we continually use technology to enhance our lives, we do it with less labour.

More and more goods and services are being produced and delivered with fewer people.

As soon as Logan Stankoven broke over the blue line, Kyle Allan knew it was over.

The head coach of the Kamloops Junior Blazers, Allan had already watched his star centre score three goals and notch two assists in the championship game of the Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

So, with the game knotted at five and the Sherwood Park Flyers pressing in the Kamloops zone, as Stankoven picked up a pass from Jarrod Semchuk, turned on the jets

to rush over the Flyers’ blue line on a breakaway, Allan knew his team was about to become only the third local club to win the city’s biggest minor hockey tournament.

Stankoven put a high wrist shot past Sherwood Park goaltender Brady Roblin, ending the final in double-overtime and giving Kamloops its first KIBIHT tier 1 title since 2011.

“Its pretty special,” Allan said, standing amidst his players’ sticks, helmets and mouthguards as the club mauled Stankoven in celebration nearby.

“This is the third time a Kamloops team has won it.

kids and they really battled hard. It’s pretty easy to give up when they come back in the third like that so this team showed a lot of heart.”

Kamloops led for the duration of Sunday’s game on McArthur Island, with the hometown club taking a 3-0 lead in the early moments of the first period, in front of a sellout crowd.

But the Flyers didn’t go away quietly. The visitors scored a shorthanded goal to head into the first intermission trailing 3-1. After Semchuk scored in the second to give Kamloops a 4-1 lead, Sherwood Park made it 4-2 to start the third period.

Sherwood Park tallied three goals in 12 minutes to send the game to overtime.

The Junior Blazers were forced to kill of a five-minute major penalty to Luke Bateman in extra time, the defender ejected from the game for checking from behind, which set the stage for Stankoven’s fourth goal and sixth point of the game in double overtime.

“It was awesome. My linemate Semchuk made a nice pass out of the zone, I came down and just put it over the goalie’s glove,” Stankoven said.

“I just tried to see what was open and I picked the corner.”

The B.C. junior title is coming back to Kamloops.

Corryn Brown and her Kamloops Curling Club rink, which includes third Marika Van Osch, second Dezaray Hawes and lead Samantha Fisher, was undefeated at the 2017 B.C. Junior Women’s Curling Championships in New Westminster on the weekend, capturing the provincial title.

Brown and company won the championship game 7-4 over the hometown Daniels rink and will now represent the province at the 2017 Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Esquimalt later this month.

“It feels really great,” Brown told KTW on Sunday.

“Obviously, we had a disappointing season last year and it just feels awesome. We had a great week here and we had faith that we were going to win it. We pulled it off.”

Brown cruised through round-robin play at the provincial championship, which was held at the Royal City Curling Club. The Kamloops rink was the only group to finish undefeated, with a 7-0 record in the prelimi-

nary round.

Once in the playoffs, Team Brown defeated Team Daniels twice to win the B.C. title.

The Kamloops rink cruised in New Westminster — only once all week was a team able to finish a game within a point of Team Brown.

“We played really well, really solid, especially in that last game,” Brown said. “I knew that if we had a threepoint lead going into 10, there was no one that could touch us.

“We never doubted.

We were playing with lots of confidence and we knew we were the best team here and we ended up coming out with the wins so we’re very happy.”

Brown captured a Canadian junior championship in 2013, when the tournament was held in Fort McMurray.

Now, with the event set to be held in their home province, the foursome is looking to become Team Canada in front of a hometown crowd in this, their final year of junior eligibility.

“We know its not going to be a cakewalk,” Brown said.

“It’s always hard at nationals — everyone tries to bring their A game. We just have to play like we did this week and we should have a good chance.”

It was on Facebook that Phil and Grace first learned they had won a 2016 Golden Shoe Award.

Away for the holidays, the Kamloops couple was contacted by one of their connections at The North Face, who had reached out via the socialmedia website to congratulate them on the honour.

As odd as the notification method was, it was somewhat fitting — when the couple first moved from Calgary to Kamloops and toyed with the idea of starting the Dirty Feet Trail Series, it was The North Face that had been among the first companies to support them.

So, what did it mean to the pair to receive the Community Pillar Award from Canadian Running Magazine?

“It mean’s a lot,” Grace told KTW last week, before joking: “It’s neat to be in Canadian Running Magazine in an article that we didn’t have to pay for or advertise for, just being recognized for what we do. That’s pretty neat.”

Phil and Grace moved to Kamloops in 2009 and it was a year later that they started the Dirty Feet Trail Series.

At the time, they had envisioned the series growing as it has — the 2017 calendar of events features 13 races — though writing a vision down on paper and reality are two different things, Phil said.

More than six years after the first trail race in September of 2010, the inclusivity of the series stands out as a highlight for the couple.

“Seeing families come out — that was one of the things we had wanted to do from the start, we wanted to be able to work on getting families to be active, creating an environment where everybody can come out and everybody can have fun at the events,” Phil said.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re a top calibre runner or a complete beginner to running and trail running.”

The couple has travelled the world running and has been racing for more than 15 years.

They both completed 100mile races in Sacramento and the Canadian Death Race in Grande Cache, Alta. They ran a 140-kilometre stretch down the

southwest corner of Australia, went from rim to rim of the Grand Canyon and ran for five days across Scotland.

And the series they started in Kamloops has borne the same love for running in residents of the Tournament Capital.

“When they first moved here, there wasn’t, to my knowledge, really a trail-running community at all. They recognized that,” said Jon Shephard, who ran his first race with the Hioms in late 2010 and has been a regular since.

“I don’t know if I would have continued running as much as I have if not for Phil and Grace and the Dirty Feet community.”

Still, despite having had a wide-ranging impact in Kamloops, being recognized with a Golden Shoe Award was an unexpected honour for the Hioms.

What a way to finish off 2016.

“Obviously, on Facebook it has been overwhelming to see everybody who has been sharing it and everybody who has been congratulating us and saying, ‘It’s well deserved. You two have done a great job. Thanks for everything you have done in our community,’” Phil said.

“It has been really nice.”

Stankoven and Junior Blazers’ goaltender Bailey Monteith were named the co-MVPs of the final, with Monteith stopping more than 40 saves in the victory.

Allan said that, to a man, Kamloops stuck together on Sunday, even when it seemed like the championship might be

getting away from them.

And though Stankoven had six points in a 6-5 victory, the championship was about more than an individual effort in the 49th annual KIBIHT. “He’s an exceptional hockey player,” Allan said of Stankoven.

“The nice thing for him, he’s got some pretty good hockey players around him.”

In tier 2 division action, both the tier 2 and tier 3 Kamloops Junior Blazers were bounced from playoff action on Saturday.

The tier 2 Junior Blazers lost to the Campbell River Tyees 3-2 in their final playoff game, while the tier 3 Junior Blazers fell 5-1 to the Prince George Cougars.

Pursuit of Excellence Varsity won the championship in tier 2 play.

While the NHL played its Winter Classic yesterday afternoon, Sun Peaks Resort was having an outdoor hockey game of its own.

The new outdoor ice rink at Kamloops’ nearby mountain resort is open for business and the holiday season has seen a flood of skaters utilizing the NHL-sized sheet.

Sun Peaks Mayor Al Raine said he’s happy with how the project has turned out.

“I haven’t seen the numbers, but the people who have been following it from last year to this year are saying we’ve at least doubled the number of people who have been skating and playing hockey,” he said.

The new rink has been a long time in the making, with KTW reporting in May of 2015 the resort’s intent to build the new venue at Sun Peaks, replacing the worn-out sheet measuring 50 feet by 100 feet, just steps from the Morrisey Express chairlift.

But the project faced a number of delays, with indecision about its location and poor weather pushing

back the opening date. The resort eventually settled on a site east of the village, behind the Sports and Aquatic Centre.

The rink opened for business shortly before Christmas, though there are still a few finishing touches in the works. Lines for hockey will be painted in the near future and, though the ice is currently being frozen by atmospheric

temperatures, a refrigeration plant purchased from a disassembled arena in Indiana will be installed toward the end of January.

The ice plant will allow the rink to stay open, with a consistent surface, through the end of March.

“We don’t need it right now,” Arne Fevang, public works and special projects assistant, said of the plant.

“The ice conditions are really good.”

The new surface measures 85 feet wide and 200 feet long — the size of a rink in the NHL — and is enclosed by boards purchased from Portland’s Moda Centre (formerly known as the Rose Garden), the primary home of the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks and the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers.

Lights come on at 4 p.m. and the surface remains lit until close.

Hours are noon to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, noon to 9 p.m. on Fridays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays.

The most popular ice times have been those reserved for public skating.

“It just builds. Tons of people come,” said Fevang, who also noted organizers are working to start the inaugural Sun Peaks Hockey League in January.

“Drop-in hockey hasn’t been as busy, but that’s a day-to-day thing, too. Some days, there’s 30 people out there, other days there’s five guys out there. But public skating has been really consistent.”

Financially, Raine said the cost of the project, including the land purchased to house the rink, totals a little more than $1 million, with between 85 and 90 per cent of the bills paid for by government grants and funds.

This is a part-time contract position with services to be provided on an “as-needed” basis. The role will encompass all areas of accounting from financial accounting to forecasting and include specific project work. Working alongside the Administrator and department managers, the successful candidate will be required to advise on budget forecasting and budget management issues, as well as on financial management aspects of specific projects. In addition, the Financial Advisor will help to develop the business case for various land development projects, business ventures, acquisitions and business decisions made by LSLIB and its affiliated companies. The candidate will also provide advice as needed to Chief and Council, and will assist the Finance Department in ensuring that the LSLIB financial management systems meet a high standard of efficiency and accountability.

Candidates should have professional accounting designation, preferably with substantial prior experience in financial management in a First Nation context.

Wolfgang Arndt (Manne) Salle of Kamloops, BC (formally of Barriere, BC) passed away peacefully at Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice early December 23rd, three days short of his 103rd birthday surrounded by wife Georgina (Geordie) and family. Born on the family homestead at Boulder Mountain in Chinook Cove, BC on the 26th of December, 1913 to Ernst and Emma Salle, who were new immigrants from Germany. The family was booked to come across the ocean on the SS Titanic in 1912. Fortunately, their luggage was late arriving so they changed their departure to the next ship called the Corsica.

Manne leaves behind his loving wife Georgina (Geordie) of 44 year of marriage, step-daughters Diane (Gary) Bloomfield, Dodie (John) Lysak, Leslie (Jody) Kennedy, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings; Volkmar, Uli, Bruno, Herta and Inge as well as his step-daughter Pat (Len) Jenkins. Manne is survived by many relatives as well as a close nephew Karl (Debbie) Rainer and family in Darfield.

Manne acquired a variety of jobs throughout his life. Starting with farming the family farmlands, moving on to hewing and skidding trees, repairing farm equipment, filing saws and working in sawmills, running a trucking business, building Cahilty School and adding on the 4th classroom to Barriere High School. His main profession was an electrician. He wired many homes when electricity came to Barriere and the North Thompson Valley as well as installing electrical water pumps and irrigation.

Over his lifetime Manne was involved in a medley of organizations; Barriere United Church, Yellowhead Pioneer Residence, North Thompson Fall Fair, Darfield Community Hall, Barriere Curling Club and many more. He was a tremendous example of what a kind heart and willing hands can accomplish.

After spending the majority of his life in Barriere and summers at East Barriere Lake, Manne and Geordie moved to Kamloops to live at the Chartwell Ridgepointe Residence. Manne celebrated his 100th Birthday with many family and friends joining him at the Barriere Fall Fair Hall in 2013.

On December 23, 2016 John Kirkland Noël of Kamloops, BC passed away peacefully with his family by his side and in his heart. John was born on August 19, 1933 in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. He married Deloris in 1956 in Saskatoon, Sask., where they lived until 1965 at which time they moved to Kamloops, BC. John started working for the City of Kamloops shortly after they moved to Kamloops and continued his long career working in road construction department until his retirement in 1995. He was well respected by his crew and co-workers whom always had kind words to say about John.

John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Deloris, sons Leslie (Lonnie) and Terry (Karen); grandchildren Lindsay O’Hearn (Sean), Stephanie (Andrew), Brett, Jonathan, Brooklyn, Cassidy, Nicole and precious little great-grandchildren Madison and Peyton O’Hearn. He is also survived by his sister Lucille and brother Bert (Dot) from Corner Brook and many other relatives and friends in Newfoundland, Saskatoon and Kamloops.

Predeceased by his parents Mary and Emile Noël; brothers Marcel, Valmore, Emile; sisters Simone Campbell, Peggy Sparrow, Marcheta Dunphy, all from Newfoundland, as well as other relatives and friends from Newfoundland, Saskatoon and Kamloops.

John enjoyed playing baseball in his younger days on the Katts ball team, fishing at Badger Lake and listening to his Newfie tunes! We will never forget how fun it was listening to his many stories of his life back home in Newfoundland….”Stay where you’re at and I’ll come where you’re to”…..he would say this with a big smile on his face and a little chuckle too!

John was a quiet man of few words and chose his words wisely. He was a wonderful and kind husband, father and grandfather “papa” and great grandfather and he will be dearly missed by all of us; especially his crazy dog “Padro”.

The family would like to especially thank their Aunties Shelley Capostinsky and Alice Haugen for their love and support over the last year and for always being there when we need them. Also thank you to the doctors and nurses at RIH and Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice House for their kindness and care. In lieu of flowers, donations to the B.C. Cancer Foundation in memory of John would be greatly appreciated. There will be no service at this time.
