A former elementary teacher is suing the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kamloops and a retired priest, alleging sexual abuse at his hands while she taught at Our Lady of Perpetual Help four decades ago.

Rosemary Anderson has filed an eight-page notice of claim in B.C. Supreme Court, claiming sexual abuse at the hands of Father Lindo Molon and an apparent coverup by thenBishop Adam Exner.

In the document, Anderson claims to have been vulnerable when she began teaching at the North Shore school in 1976.

Her claim describes Molon as her superior at the school.

The claim states Anderson went to Molon for help after the death of her father.

“Commencing in or around September 1976 and continuing for approximately eight months, Father Molon — approximately 20 years older than the plaintiff and in a position of superior spiritual, religious, moral and vocational power and/or authority — exploited the plaintiff and repeatedly performed sexual acts upon the plaintiff innumerable times, including intercourse,” the document reads.

Anderson claims in the document to have reported the incidents to the bishop of the Kamloops diocese in the spring of 1977, after which Molon was transferred to an Ontario parish.

The claim also states Anderson was ordered to leave the Kamloops diocese “by the close of the school year, under threat of slander and/or harassment by the OLPH education committee.”

In the document, Anderson claims to have suffered a loss of potential earnings.

She is also seeking aggravated damages, punitive damages and special damages, though no dollar figure is set out.

“The defendant, Father Molon, exploited the plaintiff’s vulnerability, religious devotion and obedience to manipulate her into submitting to the sexual assaults,” the claim reads, also accusing Exner of wrongdoing.

“The bishop intimidated the plaintiff and demanded that she leave the diocese under threat of slander and harassment by the education committee that governed the plaintiff’s employer, the OLPH elementary school.”

KTW called the diocese, which was unavailable to comment as its spokesman is away. The diocese has not filed a response.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Attendance at the annual Wildlights Festival has been negatively impacted by cold weather and the temporary closure of the Wildlife Express.

The popular miniature train has been out of commission since Dec. 11.

B.C. Wildlife Park general manager Glenn Grant said the train was unable to operate during the cold snap that lasted until Dec. 18. Transmission issues have since prevented it from resuming nightly rides.

Repair parts are being ordered from Kansas — where the train was manufactured — but it will not run again until the park opens for its regular season in March.

Grant said the specialty train part is $10,000.

“It affected the attendance a little bit,” Grant said.

“It’s a great feature and a lot of folks want to come out to the park to ride the train. It’s not the

only reason attendance is a lot lower this year, but it is a factor.”

The leading hindrance was the extreme weather that saw temperatures drop below -20 C with the wind chill.

Grant said nightly attendance was significantly lower when the mercury dropped over a 10-day period before Christmas.

Wildlights is down about 4,000 visitors.

The average this week is 680 people per night, on par with last year’s numbers.

However, between Dec. 9 and Dec. 18, nightly attendance fell to as low as 50 people from a seasonal average of more than 900.

“People will not come out to the park when it’s that cold,” Grant said.

“The last time we had a big snap like that for an extended period was 2008. Once you lose attendance like that at the beginning, it’s very difficult to recover from it.”

Despite Mother Nature’s meddling, Grant said park attendance for the fiscal year will

remain high.

Last year the park set an attendance record, with more than 100,000 visitors passing through the gates.

Grant expects this year’s numbers to be similar.

“Overall, we’ll still have a great year,” he said.

The park will celebrate its 20th annual Wildlights Festival in 2017, with many of this year’s new attractions returning next December.

Grant said the plan is to add more lights and propane heaters to the amphitheatre area, where 20-minute seasonal movies aired this year.

The log cabin — formerly a storage area — was a huge hit, with festive music and a fireplace for people to enjoy. Grant hopes to have more interactive outdoor activities for kids next year.

There are still a few nights left to catch this year’s Wildlights display.

It is open nightly from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and continues through Monday, Jan. 2.

A desire to protect Interior grasslands is among hundreds of comments received by the province as it develops its species at risk plan.

Nearly 5,000 visits were made to a website that received input on ways to protect the province’s species at risk.

Comments were made through a sixweek consultation that closed at the end of November. More than 450 comments were posted on the website, including from local government, First Nations, industry and citizens.

Among them was a plea for the Interior’s grasslands: “In B.C., 30 per cent of species at risk are

found in areas of native grasslands, such as the Thompson-Nicola and Okanagan valleys,” the submission stated in part, citing burrowing owls, badgers, spadefoot toads and mariposa lilies.

“The native grasslands of B.C. are at great risk. These are fragile ecologies and need to be protected.

“They should be no-go zones for industrial development, such as mining.”

B.C.’s Ministry of Environment said about 12 per cent of comments came from the Thompson-Okanagan.

The feedback is intended to be used to update B.C.’s five-year plan for species at risk.

It was last completed in 2014.

The days of wine and votes After several months of residents, winery owners and the city’s MLAs putting the corkscrews to city council, councillors on July 12 reversed a controversial decision to prohibit wine sales at the Sahali Save-OnFoods.

The request was blocked after private liquor store owners in the area argued SaveOn’s request would hurt their businesses and likely lead to extended alcohol sales in city grocery stores.

Councillors were concerned wine sales could lead to increased alcohol consumption and addictions issues.

Local winery owners said selling their products in Save-On would giver their businesses additional visibility and help expand the industry.

In a reversal of their first vote, councillors agreed to allow the store to sell B.C. VQA wines only.

Other enterprising fans used the craze to try to earn a few bucks.

After discovering the game drained smartphone batteries, Shane Ziggy rented a generator for a week and set up a cellphone charging station.

Other business owners set up lures to attract more Pokemon to their locations or became stops where players could virtually collect more supplies for the game.

Lafarge will shut its doors in city

It was another blow to Kamloops’ heavy industry sector as Lafarge Canada Inc. announced on Oct. 20 it would close its cement plant for the foreseeable future.

Milobar to carry B.C. Liberal flag

On Nov. 19, Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar emerged victorious in the nomination race to succeed MLA Terry Lake as B.C. Liberal candidate in Kamloops-North Thompson.

Milobar was challenging North Shore Business Improvement Association executive director Steven Puhallo and Tobiano founder Mike Grenier for the right to carry the party flag in the May 9 provincial election.

While party officials would not release official voting results, a source told KTW Milobar won on the first ballot with 53 per cent of votes cast.

About 60 per cent of the riding’s 880 members cast ballots at one of four locations: McArthur Island in Kamloops, Sun Peaks, Barriere and Clearwater.

“It’s been a hardfought nomination,” Milobar told reporters after the announcement by the party.

“It’s been very respectful and teambuilding for the whole party and riding.”

With Milobar’s nomination, all three parties in the legislature have named candidates for both city ridings.

Milobar will face the NDP’s Barb Nederpel and the Green’s Dan Hines.

Also running is Peter Kerek of the B.C. Communist Party.

Milobar said nothing will change shortterm in his approach as city mayor.

“There’s a city budget we’re working on,” he said.

“That’s not interrelated with the province in any way, shape or form.”

He said he expects to “step away” from the mayor’s job at some point before the writ is dropped on April 11 for the May 9 election.

“That’s historically what happens,” he said.

Teenager killed in hit and run

Jennifer Gatey’s life came to a tragic end on the evening of Nov. 6 when she was struck by a vehicle and killed while walking to the bus stop on Pacific Way, just south of Aberdeen Drive.

It was the day before the South Kamloops Secondary student was due to celebrate her 17th birthday.

Police investigated a dark-coloured jeep at a Dufferin home a few days after the collision and are awaiting forensic results.

Jennifer’s father, Cameron, remembers her as shy, but fun-loving, a girl who enjoyed playing guitar and piano, skiing and spending quality time on the golf course with her dad.

Gatey’s family is setting up a scholarship in her memory through the Urban Systems Foundation.

A poll by CIBC has found 48 per cent of respondents do not plan to cut back spending on non-essential items in order to meet goals that include eliminating debt, keeping up with bills and refining their investments.

Among those who incurred new debt over the past 12 months, almost one-third of those surveyed said the primary reason for overspending was day-to-day expenses beyond their monthly income.

Yet the poll also found that only 26 per cent of the respondents said they will actually set a household budget to help them stay on track with a financial plan.

t has again fallen upon my shoulders to prepare you, dear reader, for what to expect in the Kamloops as 2017 makes its grand entrance: • Feeling the force of a hurricane of complaints after changing the way visitors to Royal Inland Hospital pay for parking, the great minds at the Interior Health Authority hold a press conference to boast of what they call a revolutionary way to ensure parking revenue is stable while offering the fairest method of payment for drivers.

The brand-new parkade on Columbia Street opened with a pay-upon-exit system, which was universally embraced.

The IHA then reverted to its former, much-loathed payin-advance method, but was adamant such a switch was not connected to a dramatic 30 per cent decline in revenue during the first three months of the new parkade’s operation.

At the press conference, the IHA announces that, while it is retaining its pay-in-advance system in the parkade, it is rolling out a reservation system for those visiting the hospital’s emergency room, with all parking stalls to be available for a flat fee by advance bookings only.

When asked how a person can possibly know in advance when they will need to visit the ER, reporters are reminded that discussing personal health-care matters of patients is prohibited.

The campaign led to a new slogan — “Find Your TRU” — and tweaking of the school’s logo and font, for which Will Creative Inc. of Vancouver was paid $100,000.

The review of the new slogan comes amid reports of numerous incoming university students using voice-activated GPS systems en route to campus and winding up on the doorsteps of various members of a certain Atlantic Canada rock band.

• Mayor Peter Milobar is elected MLA of KamloopsNorth Thompson in the May 9 provincial election and immediately offers to take an unpaid leave of absence until Jan. 1, 2018, at which time, under the Community Charter, city council can carry on with one fewer member until the October 2018 civic election.

However, council — among which there are a few eyes coveting Milobar’s empty chair — opts instead for an election that will cost more than

$160,000 to conduct.

Council is asked why it would spend so much money to elect a mayor who will serve little more than a year.

Council defends its stand, pointing out it has wasted far more taxpayers’ dollars in far more frivolous ways, citing the expenditure of $180,000 to host budget meetings for dozens of empty chairs in 2014 and spending $200,000 to have its consultant complete a study on a proposed mining application over which council has zero say.

• After failing to deliver on its 2010 promise to have a doctor for every resident of the province by 2015 (the GP for Me program), and with up to 30,000 Kamloopsians still without a family doctor, the B.C. Liberals unveil their first promise of the 2017 election campaign.

Standing outside the Starbuds medical-marijuana dispensary, outgoing Health Minister Terry Lake outlines the Weed for Thee initiative, which promises a legal joint for every British Columbian forced to stand in line for hours outside a walk-clinic.

“Sure, the long wait may seem longer, but it won’t be as dull,” Lake said.

Interestingly, the NDP’s strategic campaign response — “Fentanyl for All” — is cited by political pundits as the primary reason the party is trounced at the polls.

IS SOMEBODY TRAPPING CATS IN KAMLOOPS? Editor: Where are Cledus and Cali?

My two cats mysteriously vanished a dayand-a-half apart — one on Nov. 23 and the other on Nov. 25.

I live on Larch Avenue on the North Shore.

These two cats do not wander more than two doors on either side of us. I usually see them running back and forth from the two houses across from me.

They are 12 years old and I have had them since they were born. I know my cats and I know someone has trapped them.

There are cats being found way up Red Lake Road, in the hills above Batchelor Heights and in Cooney Bay. It is legal to humanely trap and take cats to the BC SPCA or the Humane Society, but it is illegal to trap and dump them outside of city limits, where they cannot defend themselves.

Such actions are cruel and constitute animal abuse.

I have done everything possible to try to

find my cats. I have contacted the police, I have put up posters, I have knocked on doors and I have searched areas near the North Thompson River, but have found not a trace of them.

Someone has literally picked them up or they have walked into a trap.

The calico is very skittish and it would not be easy to grab her, so it makes me think a trap was used.

Apparently, a few other cats have gone missing in my neighbourhood, which encompasses Larch Avenue, Beach Avenue, Fairview Avenue and Tamarack Avenue along Schubert Drive.

I am offering a $500 reward for information leading me to my cats. Anybody with information is urged to call me at 250-2998975. The Kamloops RCMP and City of Kamloops bylaw department can also be contacted.

The election may be over, but Steve Powrie’s life continues at a frenetic pace.

“I’ve re-engaged with community organizations and I’m playing with lots of different groups,” said Powrie, who teaches band and other subjects at Aberdeen elementary and education courses at Thompson Rivers University.

Oh, there was also that book — a text for the new social studies curriculum that will introduce 12- and 13-year-olds to the

global economic and political community “without overwhelming them with all the doom and gloom they get barraged with on the news,” as Powrie puts it.

“The day after election night, I was back at school at 8 a.m. and that night we were on a bus with 50 kids off to a Me to We thing,” Powrie recalled.

“They warn you, when you go to Ottawa and get these clinics, that there’s a major letdown if you don’t win because you put all this stuff into it for a yearand-a-half and all of a sudden it’s over.

appointing, but I think the best thing was just get right back involved in other things.”

A late-in-the-campaign surge of support that propelled Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal party to an unexpected majority didn’t fully manifest in Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo.

Powrie finished third behind incumbent Conservative MP Cathy McLeod and the NDP’s Bill Sundhu, but the 30 per cent of the vote he secured repre-

sents a major inroad for a party that polled less than 10 per cent in 2008 and 2006.

While Powrie isn’t sure whether he will run again, he believes the next person to take the Liberal mantle will have a confidence boost.

“Right off the bat, people will take the party seriously in this riding,” he said.

Some, including Powrie’s former opponent Sundhu, have criticized the government over its handling of electoral reform.

Earlier this month, the minister responsible for the file was forced to apologize to the Commons committee struck to handle the issue for saying it had not done its job after it recommended putting a proportional system to referendum.

Liberal members of the committee urged the Trudeau government to abandon plans to change the country’s voting system before the next election.

Powrie thinks the Liberals may be grappling with timing issues more than a lack of commitment to the issue.

“There are less than three years left before the next election. Is that time enough — and I don’t know the answer to that question — is that time to restructure your entire system of voting?” he said. “I don’t think it’s for ideological reasons that they’ve moderated their tone.

“I think it’s more practical reasons.”

Don’t call 911 about a spider Those who answer 911 calls in B.C. have revealed the annual list of top reasons to not call the emergency number.

Call-takers Jim Beland and Chris Faris had the top two 911 nuisance calls of the year: a broken gym locker and someone enquiring about job opportunities with the police.

“I’d like to be able to say that calls such as the ones on our top 10 list are rare, but unfortunately this isn’t the case,” Beland said.

“As call-takers, our job is to treat each call like an emergency until we can determine otherwise, and this takes time. We want our time reserved for people who need help because they have a legitimate emergency.”

Faris agrees.

“Unfortunately, we do get a lot of people who call 911 think-

ing it can be used as an information hotline. We get a lot of calls that start off with, ‘This is not an emergency but . . .’ and that’s a concern when we know there are other people out there who need our help.”

E-Comm receives more than one-million calls every year to 911.

Bloor to plead guilty to new charges TIM PETRUK

A Kamloops woman who was jailed last year after scamming a senior to pay for fake breasts will plead guilty to more than a dozen new charges filed against her.

That’s what Brandie Bloor said during a brief hearing in Kamloops provincial court yesterday.

The 40-year-old has been behind bars at a

women’s prison in the Lower Mainland since her arrest in Vancouver on Dec. 17.

“I do not want to have a bail hearing at this time,” Bloor said via video from jail. “I’m going to actually plead out when I can.”

Bloor is facing 14 charges relating to alleged frauds, forgeries and thefts of identity in Kamloops over a 20-month period between 2012 and 2014.

She said she also

intends to plead guilty to outstanding charges out of Surrey and Vancouver.

In June 2015, a Kamloops judge sentenced Bloor to nine months in jail and ordered she repay more than $17,000 to an 83-year-old man she bilked in her bid for bigger breasts.

Bloor was arrested after the man received a call from a clinic telling him his payments were in arrears. The man had never met

Bloor, but she used his stolen driver’s licence to obtain a loan for breast-enhancement surgery.

Bloor initially denied the fraud, but police found a tattoo on her stomach that matched the description given by the doctor who performed the surgery. She later pleaded guilty.

In court yesterday, Bloor said she hopes to hire a lawyer before her next court appearance on Jan. 12.

CHEER FUND RAISES MORE THAN $52,000 FOR LOCAL CHARITIES

Campaign wrapping up but still time to give given for donations greater than $20.

Gregg Drinnan started the fund in Regina in 1992 and brought it to Kamloops when he became sports editor at the Kamloops Daily News.

When that paper shut down, KTW continued the tradition with help from the United Way ThompsonNicola-Cariboo.

This year’s campaign kicked off on Nov. 1.

Last year, the fund raised more than $57,000.

Since KTW took over the campaign in 2014, it has raised more than $150,000.

With the impending start of a new year, the KTW Christmas Cheer Fund is drawing to an end.

The final day to donate to the fund, which raises money for local charities, is tomorrow.

To date, it has raised $52,503.90.

The money will be distributed to five charities: the Y Women’s Emergency Shelter, Family Tree Family Centre, Sensational Soups, Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre and New Life Community Kamloops.

The 18-year-old goaltender from Lantzville continued his excellent play in a 5-1 victory over the Kelowna Rockets at Sandman Centre on Wednesday, making 46 saves to earn first-star honours.

“It’s been a big confidence booster for me and the guys on the team have given me support,” Ferguson said. “But this was just another game for me. I’m just focused on Vancouver now.”

Davoren loving life despite terminal illness KTW

Bob Davoren hasn’t changed.

It was in August of 2015 that KTW published The Davoren Legacy, a feature on the then-71-year-old and a life that has led to him being known as Kamloops’ unofficial sports historian.

his diagnosis, the man they called “Bullet Bob” in his baseball days hasn’t changed.

He still has the same infectiously optimistic attitude, still loves to tell a good story.

Always the collector, he’s giving away more items than he’s picking up nowadays, but in almost every other way, the 73-year-old seems the same.

“I don’t quit,” Davoren told KTW. “You have days you think about it, but then there’s so much support — family and friends — it’s just incredible.”

Since speaking with KTW in 2015, life has gone on relatively normally for Davoren.

Of course, there have been the chemotherapy treatments at Royal Inland Hospital, but he still managed to get out for another hunting season and has been at Sandman Centre, an ever-faithful season ticket holder for the Kamloops Blazers.

He and his wife, Peggy, made a trip south to celebrate their 50th anniversary — making it to the milestone had been a goal when he was first diagnosed — and the two hosted Christmas for the family this month at their Sun Rivers home.

Life goes on.

“I just turned my 73, Peg and I did our cruise, got our 50th anniversary in, which was fantastic. Life’s not bad,” Davoren said, his face alight-

ing with a smile, his hands still jumping with excitement as he spoke.

But there have been down moments, too. There are days Bob feels unwell and struggles with the idea he can only make plans a month or two in advance. Once avid travellers, he and Peggy miss their trips to Mexico.

But they have 25 years of memories from those trips to fall back on, he said.

He has been thankful to have this time to bring some closure to his life, to hand out his bits and pieces of Kamloops sports history, memorabilia, to people he knows will appreciate them.

And, though it’s no secret the treatments he’s receiving are getting less and less effective, he’s grateful they worked at all.

Always the lucky man, Bob’s latest stroke of good fortune has been the therapy, which only works on 40 per cent of MDS patients and has given him nearly two more years with his family.

Life won’t last forever, but he’s going to squeeze the joy out of every last moment, as he always has.

“Like I said a yearand-a-half ago, I was going to fight to get out and chase some big bucks around and get to Christmas and now I’m going to fight for the next one,” he said.

“Why not? There’s no quitting. You don’t quit.”

He was 64.

His funeral and a celebration of life were held yesterday in Kamloops.

TORONTO — Tom Renney is stepping down as president of Hockey Canada in a move he hopes will make the organization more “diverse.’’

Scott Smith, Hockey Canada’s chief operating officer, will replace Renney as president as of July 1, while Renney will remain as CEO and continue to lead and set the direction for the organization.

“We make ourselves more diverse and put ourselves in a position to show necessary cache that’s required in the different elements that we work in,’’ Renney said of the change in roles. “[My job] is that of a vision, of inspiration to the masses, helping divide and conquer as much as anything. “[Scott’s] job is from an operations perspective primarily making sure that on a daily basis from coast-to-coast-tocoast our staff is functioning as they need to.’’

Renney said the move to promote Smith will allow the organization to more effectively deliver on its mandate to grow the game within Canada, and abroad.

“My hope is that I get to be out there more and evolve with the branches specifically where I get into the communities across the country,’’ said Renney.

“Whether you’re a player, coach or an official — whatever the case may be — I think the message needs to be not just heard and seen, but you’ve got

Smith initially joined Hockey Canada in 1995 and was named COO in 2007. He was considered for the presidency before Renney was hired in July of 2014. He’ll continue to oversee all day-to-day operations of the organization, but will take on a more public role for the organization as part of his duties as president.

“We have about 675,000 registered players across the country and we want to grow that number. We want to give more kids a better experience.

“Ultimately, they’ll grow up and maybe have opportunities

like the players who are (at the world juniors),’’ Smith said.

“To do that, it takes a significant amount of time and effort.

I can tell you over the last two and a half years of working alongside Tom, there’s not many things that we don’t cooperate on and we don’t discuss in great detail.’’

Renney was not made available to address the growing concern of empty seats at Air Canada Centre through the first three days of competition at the world juniors.

Attendance and ticket pricing at both the 2015 and 2017 world juniors in Toronto and Montreal has been an issue in Renney’s tenure as president of Hockey Canada.

Gemma Valentinuzzi Gemma Valentinuzzi passed away in Victoria, BC on December 23, 2016 at the age of 87 years. She is survived by her sons Joseph Valentinuzzi of Kamloops, BC and Valter (Sharon) Valentinuzzi of Victoria, BC, her grandchildren Cristina (Grayson) Doyle, Stephanie (Craig) Valentinuzzi and Emma Valentinuzzi, her great-grandchildren Matteo and Cristiano Doyle. She is also survived by her sisters Luigia Brignoli, Evelina Rovere and Nella Puppin as well as nieces, nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband Luigi Valentinuzzi.

On Boxing Day 2016 at 97 years of age, Gordon peacefully passed away at his home at Berwick in Kamloops.

Gordon was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan growing up, the middle child of nine children. He left Regina at the start of WWII with the RCAF and served a little over six years, then settled in Vancouver after the war and met and married Edna. In 1958, the young family moved to Kamloops – and lived in one of the first houses in the east end of Valleyview. Gord’s pool was a neighbourhood favourite and his annual mid-summer birthday parties are fond memories for many family and friends – always a great rendition of A-T-K-I-N-S-O-N rounding out the afternoon.

Gordon and Edna were great square dancers and enjoyed many special events (including their 25th Wedding Anniversary party) and lots of world-wide travels. Gordon never sat still for long and over the years took up skiing, golfing, curling and lawn bowling. He was a member of Branch 52 Royal Canadian Legion.

Gordon was predeceased by his wife Edna in 1970, his son David in 1984 and his daughter Susan in 2015. He was also predeceased by his loving companion of many years Gerry Carney.

Gordon is survived by his grandsons in Edmonton, Shane Boorse and Ryan Boorse and their families and by his sister Vera (Phoenix) and his brother and sister-in-law Norman and Grace (Kamloops).

Gordon’s nephews and nieces, and great- nephews and nieces, and great-great nephews and nieces will miss our Uncle’s sparkle and facing life with a smile.

While Uncle Gord hasn’t been buying green bananas for quite some time, he was feeling quite well up until the last few days. We are so pleased that he was able to be singing Christmas carols with us and his friends at Berwick, just a week before he died.

Gemma was born on August 20th, 1929 in San Giovanni Di Casarsa, Italy. She married Luigi Valentinuzzi in Casarsa on November of 1951. They worked side by side on their family farms, but wanting more opportunities for their family they decided to immigrate to Canada. In 1956, Luigi arrived in Prince Rupert and was followed by Gemma with their young son Joseph in 1958 to begin a new life. In 1963, their son Valter was born. Gemma was a homemaker for her husband and two sons, while her husband worked at the pulp mill. They felt a great sense of community in Prince Rupert and had many friends.

Gemma’s faith sustained her throughout her life.

In 1990, Gemma and Luigi retired and decided to move back to San Giovanni, Italy.

Luigi built their new home in Italy in the country side surrounded by vineyards and cornfields next to Gemma’s sisters and brother.

Gemma was happiest when her children and grandchildren visited them in Italy.

She loved when everyone was gathered together at the kitchen table enjoying meals together. The house was filled with pictures of her three granddaughters, Cristina, Stephanie and Emma. They were the joy of her life and she always loved when they were close to her. Gemma enjoyed baking, sewing and cooking. She always took pride in making all her own clothes. She leaves behind a family who will always treasure her and will never forget her.

The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to all the wonderful nurses, care givers and staff at St. Mary’s Nursing Home Hospital in Victoria for their care of mom over the past 2 years.

Gordon’s extended family wishes to express our sincere appreciation for the wonderful care from all at Berwick, his last home on earth.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 2, 2017 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church with Father Andrew L’Heureux Celebrant.

Entombment will follow at Sage Valley Mausoleum.

There is no service at Gord’s request, but we expect there will be lots of stories shared in his memory.

Should friends desire, donations to Mount St. Mary’s Nursing Home Hospital, Victoria, BC would be appreciated in her memory.

We thank, from the bottom of our hearts, all the friends who came to say their final goodbyes to Paul in Kelowna. Please continue to take the message forward so this tragedy does not occur again.

Thank you to Archdeacon Don Wootten, for bringing kind words and comfort to everyone during Paul’s Celebration of Life, to Paul’s Uncle Rob for a loving eulogy, to good friends Cheryl and Fred for compiling a memorable slideshow in a short period of time, for songs and singers, to sister Nicola for creating stunning flower arrangements, and to countless others who assisted the family.

A special thank you to all the young people who spoke about Paul in such a kind and humorous way.

Pauly truly did not realize how much love and joy he brought to each of his friends.

ristina Benson has been a working artist for more than a decade,

but her ah-ha moment came just a few months ago.

An idea to integrate her passions for painting and yoga — and ultimately launch her line of wearable-art leg-

hile falling asleep on the couch before midnight is a perfectly good way to celebrate New Year’s Eve, KTW has compiled a few ideas for those looking to venture out of the house.

Here are some events happening in our community: • Fraternal Order of Eagles has a buffet dinner at 755 Tranquille Rd., starting at 6 p.m.

The evening includes dancing, champagne and party favours. Tickets are $40 for members and $50 for non-members from the venue.

• The Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre celebrates the New Year’s

arrival with a buffet dinner and dance featuring Shattered Blue.

Cocktails are at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. and dancing at 9 p.m.

Tickets are $67 and include dinner, table wine, champagne at midnight and party favours. Tickets can be bought online at eventbrite.ca. Search for the venue name.

• The Plaza Hotel is preparing a special dinner to celebrate New Year’s Eve. For $59 per person (a second person in a pair can be added for $25), enjoy a fourcourse dinner and glass of B.C. bubbly wine.

Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. Dinner-ticket holders also get a reduced

room rate at the hotel, which includes breakfast for two.

• Take in a fourcourse meal to live music or rock out to a DJ with a champagne toast at The Dunes this New Year’s Eve. The Dunes is hosting dinner from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cost is $45 per person. Once dinner is over, the party begins, with a live DJ, party favours, door prizes and appetizers.

Tickets are $30 for the dance portion of the evening. Guests are invited to one or both parts of the celebration.

• Fire dancers and a kids’ glowstick parade

are part of additional festivities up at Sun Peaks Resort this year.

The village is hopping from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the Torchlight Parade at 8:15 p.m. and fireworks at 8:30 p.m.

The best location to take in the festivities is at the base of the Sundance Express chairlift, just outside the Village Day Lodge.

The Royal BC Museum has curious request First Nations members invited to submit stories of belonging for publication The Royal BC Entertainment Museum and Archives is inviting First Nations members from across the province to submit to its quarterly publication, Curious.

The theme of the 2017 spring edition is belonging — what does it mean to find yourself, family and community in the Royal BC Museum and Archives collections?

Museum frequenters and those yet to visit the museum, which is located in Victoria, are encouraged to participate and help showcase First Nations family history. Staff are available online and in person to provide research assistance.

Contributions to the issue can be in a digital format: article, personal narrative, interview, creative non-fiction, poetry, visual art, digital art, sound or video.

Those interested are asked to email cunningham.curious@gmail.com by Jan. 15, including your name, contact information and a brief description of the idea.

The museum is accepting up to 20 submissions and will provide a small honorarium. All, regardless of experience, are welcome to submit.

Having been immersed in her graphic design business for the last 10 years, Benson let painting fall by the wayside.

In early 2016, she felt an overwhelming desire to pick up the brush again — to the point it was keeping her awake at night.

Benson resumed painting, built up a recent portfolio and registered her canvas work in the Kamloops Arts Council’s Art Exposed exhibit in March.

leggings were manufactured in California but, in turning the idea into a business, she was adamant the products be made in Canada.

She found a supplier based in Montreal.

“As soon as that happened, the floodgates opened for me creatively,” Benson said.

“We talk about artists having a medium — it’s pottery or it’s canvas . . . Leggings are now my medium — and fabric is.

“Not only that, the girls who wear it are

actually my medium and that’s just a really neat concept.”

Designing leggings has altered Benson’s creative process.

She visualizes her paintings vertically now, rather than horizontally.

The legs of the garment are painted individually and Benson has developed a knack for shapes and lines that flatter the lower body.

But, perhaps the most powerful aspect of Benson’s work is the

message she attaches to each design — her 2016 collection includes more than 35 unique prints.

Benson’s inspiration often originates from a word or a feeling: overcome, serenity, surrender, for example.

The message is printed on the fabric, and becomes the namesake of the design.

The words often resonate strongly with customers, who feel a connection to the clothing like they would other artwork, Benson said.

“For the last 10 years I’ve had this welled up inside of me, where I could create in sort of a

different way,” Benson said.

“It’s this trifecta of this perfect moment in time where this is where I need to be and this is where other people need to be to be able to connect with my artwork.”

Benson’s wearable art designs also come in beanies, scarves and kimonos.

The Kamloops Interior Summer School of Music (KISSM) is known for its three-week all-day music camp every year — but there’s much more to KISSM. The most recent initiative, Whole Note, has seen its first set of young musicians

Lessons, mentorships included in recent KISSM initiative approved for a series of lessons, mentorship and performance opportunities and introduced to the public at an event at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre.

The group includes Brock Middle School students Pandora Sims (violin), Jorja KingJones (clarinet), Aiden

Antoine (clarinet), Edric Antoine (trumpet), Jessica Savoy (flute), Mandy Maher (voice) and Hanna Gerard (drum kit), Kamloops School of the Arts student Isaac Grigg (tenor saxophone) and NorKam secondary student Regan Schultz (voice).

In its first year, the

program is restricted to students in grades 7 to 10 who have shown an interest in improving their musical talents.

There’s the Kamloops Community band, which it oversees and uses to connect students with mentors.

The band has about 40 members between the ages of 18 and 80

who perform at events throughout the city with set lists that range from movie themes to big band to jazz to works by local composers.

It meets Sundays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the South Kamloops secondary band room.

All can paint, be creative

P

ainting has always been my first love.

I have worked in many mediums but always come back to painting. I think it’s the immediacy of the medium I enjoy the most.

That and working with colour.

Sometimes, creating can take up a lot of energy, but with painting, I find the opposite.

It gives me energy while I’m doing it. It’s like a creative high that drives out negativity and fills me with joy.

I believe anyone has the ability to paint and be creative. All you have to do is try.

The following is an example of my creative process and a step-bystep guide to create a snowy landscape.

• Start simple and sketch out a composition using your paint brush.

• Pick colours you want to use in your painting. I generally start with the sky and carry some of the colour into

the landscape.

• Create contrast and drama. Make dark areas in the painting to set up light areas.

I used violet instead of black, mainly because I love colour and, as artists, we get to paint the world the way we want it.

• Put in light areas.

I often call this the push and pull of a painting. I will use light colour to bring areas forward and dark areas to push them back.

• Put in the foreground. I gently drew

in the trees with a small paint brush and covered them liberally with white paint creating snow.

• Add snow and finishing touches.

For the end of the painting, I generally do more looking than painting.

Fix anything that is bugging you.

I put in dabs of falling snow to give the piece a feeling of movement.

Classes are two hours long, with a painting completed from start to finish in that time.

one are the days of busking downtown, singing for passersby at the annual Live At Lunch events in the summer.

But the one thing that remains is Ben Bermiller is still making music.

The Kamloops School of the Arts graduate headed east shortly after receiving his Dogwood certificate, first stopping in Toronto for a while but eventually landing in Montreal.

Bermiller says life is great there, “mainly because of the energy of my bandmates but also the artsy nature of Lower Canada makes me feel at rest with the weirdos. Would you believe I can speak some French now, too?”

recently, recording a four-song extended play with his band, Michigan, in The Mothership Studios.

It is located one floor above the Freq Shop in the industrial north area of Montreal, its own unique place filled with retro 1960s decor, vintage gear and a space that has been used for film screenings and as a live venue.

am humming a tune that has been playing in my head.

“In Dublin’s fair city, where the girls are so pretty.”

Today, however, as I walk along the busy sidewalks of the city, there’s no sign of sweet Molly Malone and no cries of “cockles and mussels, alive, alive-o” wafting on the mild summer air.

But there’s plenty else to grab my attention.

The city’s architectural curiosities, for example.

The Samuel Beckett Bridge across the Liffey River is a graceful asymmetric harp-like structure (the harp being Ireland’s national symbol) as sleek and contemporary as its urban surroundings.

Further along the banks is the city’s convention centre, which, ‘punnily’ enough, is decidedly un-convention-al.

Popularly dubbed “The Cube with the Tube” the glass-fronted cylindrical structure seems to lean drunkenly backwards into a cardboard-coloured box.

And then, there are the Doors of Dublin.

All across the city, and particularly in upscale residential areas, Georgian-style buildings stand four-

square: brick facades with regularly spaced windows, all uniformly bland — except for their front doors: electric blue, blazing orange, royal purple, scarlet, parrot green, ice-cream pink and canary yellow doors.

Doors framed by white columns and surmounted by fan-lights in whimsical designs.

Doors with brass knockers and doors with intricately carved handles.

Doors with latticed side panels and doors with multi-colored checkered panels.

How did they come about?

An urban legend says two eccentric and often tipsy neighbours painted their front doors in green and red to prevent one barging into the other’s house by mistake when in their cups.

However, the actual story is Georgian architects built these monotonously staid houses to a strict design code, which allowed just one exception — owners could choose the design and colour of their entrance doors.

Dubliners did so with flamboyant gusto — and the tradition continues today.

For me, no trip to

Dublin would have been complete without a visit to Trinity College, where the fabled Book of Kells is on display in the great library building.

For the better part of 90 minutes, I am reduced to dumb awe as I pore over these medieval illuminated vellum folios of the Gospels — flamboyant curlicues of text and biblical scenes in brilliant greens, vibrant blues and glowing crimson.

One floor up and attracting about 500,000 visitors a year is the magnificent Long Room with more than

200,000 rare volumes stacked in shelves under the vaulted ceiling of the gallery and guarded by marble busts of eminent philosophers — Aristotle, Cicero and Burke, to name a few.

Breathtaking.

It leads me to explore Dublin’s rich literary heritage.

Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, Bernard Shaw, Jonathan Swift and Bram Stoker all called the city home at one point or another in their lives.

I stumble on an exhibition of the life and work of William Butler Yeats at the

National Library, an inconspicuous little building off Kildare Street, and I spend an enjoyable hour browsing through memorabilia, photographs and watching a documentary of recitations from several of his well-loved poems like The Lake Isle of Innisfree.

The independent Republic of Ireland came into being in 1922 and was formally ratified on Easter Monday 1949.

This year, however, marks the Centenary of the Easter Uprising in 1916, the rebellion and fight for freedom from England’s imperial fist.

Ceremonies and exhibitions celebrating the milestone are part of this year’s events and a visit to the grim Kilmainham Gaol, is on my agenda.

It makes my skin crawl — narrow stone passages, grimy walls and dark cells.

In a barren courtyard, wreaths are placed on a cross in memory of those who were executed there a century earlier.

The words of the

song, Grace echo in my mind and brings a lump to my throat as I stand before a cell where 28-year-old Edward Plunkett was incarcerated.

Plunkett was the youngest of the group of rebels sentenced to death.

His last wish was to marry his beloved fiancée, Grace Gifford, and the ceremony took place in his prison cell under the gaze of armed guards.

The poignant chorus of the song goes: “Oh Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger. They’ll take me out at dawn and I will die.

“With all my love, I place this wedding ring upon your finger.

“There won’t be time to share our love for we must say goodbye.”

Dublin, with all it’s history of blood and glory, compels and fires the imagination.

I’d love to be back again someday.

Netanyahu, Obama and the United Nations

I

srael Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is very, very cross about the United Nations Security Council resolution condemning the creation of illegal Jewish settlements all over the occupied West Bank and in East Jerusalem.

He called in the ambassadors of all Western countries that voted for the resolution to tell them off: Britain, France, Spain, even New Zealand. He also had the U.S. ambassador on the carpet, although Washington merely abstained in the Security Council vote.

But, Netanyahu said, Donald Trump’s incoming administration has promised to fight “an all-out war” against the resolution.

The resolution is only words, of course, but they are words that have not found their way into any UN Security Council resolution since 1979

WATCH because the United States always used its veto to kill any resolution that contained them.

The words describe the settlements as having “no legal validity” and constituting a “flagrant violation under international law and a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-state solution.”

This is a restatement of a truth that was once almost universally accepted — even in Israel.

When Israel’s aston-

ishing victory in the 1967 war put the entire remaining area that had been granted to the Palestinians by the UN partition agreement of 1948 under Israeli control, most Israelis initially saw it as an opportunity for peace.

Israel now had a powerful bargaining card. If the Arabs wanted their lost territories back, they would have to sign peace treaties with Israel — and probably agree to demilitarise those territories into the bargain.

To a generation of Israelis who had lived in permanent, existential fear of losing a war, that looked like a good bargain. Even then, a minority of Israelis wanted to keep the conquered territories forever and repopulate them with Jewish settlers.

Some of these expansionists were motivated by religion, others by security concerns, but they all understood the

way to thwart any giveaway of these territories was to fill them with Jewish settlers.

The settler movement began slowly: 15 years after the conquest, there were still only 100,000 Jews living in the occupied territories, but the number doubled to 200,000 by 1990 and doubled again to 400,000 by 2002. It is now at least 600,000, and may be as high as 750,000.

If the settler population continues to grow at the current rate, there could be as many as a million Jews in the occupied territories by 2030.

At that point, the longterm prospect of a Jewish majority heaves above the horizon.

And that is what the current confrontation between President Barack Obama Netanyahu is really about.

Netanyahu avoids any actual peace talks with the Palestinians because

a peace deal (if it could be achieved) would mean the end of the settlement project.

He can’t say that out loud, of course, but it is the openly expressed view of the settler leaders whose support has been essential to Netanyahu’s various coalition governments.

This is why Netanyahu has to lie all the time, and it drives Obama crazy.

In a conversation caught on an open mike in 2011, France’s then-president Nicolas Sarkozy told Obama: “I can’t stand him [Netanyahu]. He’s a liar.”

And Obama replied: “You’re tired of him?

What about me? I have to deal with him every day.”

But Obama’s decision to abstain on the Security Council vote condemning Israeli settlement policy in the Palestinian occupied territories was not just a childish last slap at Netanyahu.

Obama has a fundamentally different view of what constitutes longterm security for Israel — one he shares with most other outside observers, but a shrinking proportion of Israelis.

Long term does mean long term. It cannot be assumed Arab states will always be relatively poor and incompetently led, and that Israel will always be the unchallengeable military superpower of the region.

So, in the view of Obama and other outsiders, Israel’s long-term security still depends on making a fair and lasting peace with its Arab neighbours — including the Palestinians.

The settlements fatally undermine the prospects for such a deal.

For a growing number of Israelis, that is irrelevant because they have a fundamentally demonic view of the Arabs and do not believe a lasting peace with them

is possible.

In which case, of course, Israel might as well grab all of East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

The Jewish settlements are indeed illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention and there is not a single government outside Israel that believes they are legitimate.

But the recent Security Council resolution will have no effect on Israeli policy, nor will the state of Israel suffer grave consequences as a result.

Trump will stop any further such resolutions with the U.S. veto, although he is unlikely to be able to undo this one.

And we will all have to wait a long time to know whether it is the perspective of Netanyahu and Trump, or that of Obama and almost all other world leaders, that ultimately defines Israel’s future. gwynnedyer.com
