Mayor Arjun Singh?

Some city councillors say they could see it, should Mayor Peter Milobar capture the Kamloops-North Thompson provincial seat in the May 9 election and leave municipal politics.

Coun. Tina Lange said discussions over who could replace Milobar, and how the process would work, have not begun in earnest.

But she thinks Coun.

Arjun Singh is a strong contender for the job if council looks to avoid a byelection.

has spoken with some of his colleagues about becoming interim mayor if Milobar is successful in his bid to become a B.C. Liberal MLA. Already on track to become president of the Union of B.C. Municipalities in 2019, Singh said he has no plans to run as mayor in the next general civic election in 2018.

Lange said while Singh isn’t the only councillor who could lead in Milobar’s absence, she believes councillors with serious mayoral ambitions may want to avoid the appointment, which could be perceived as having an unfair advantage in the next election.

Lange said Singh may

also make sense for the role because of his high level of public support.

After Coun. Ken Christian, who has said he will run for mayor if a byelection is called, Singh had the secondhighest vote tally in the 2014 civic elections.

Lange also cited Singh’s position as one of council’s swing voters.

“He really, truly does hear both sides and he listens and he researches and he talks to the public,” she said.

“To me, the person who’s down the middle would be a good choice for the person who only has to look after things for a year-and-a-half.”

Coun. Denis Walsh said holding a byelection would be “irresponsible”

because of the cost (estimated at $160,000) and the proximity to the next civic election.

If Milobar is elected, in May, a byelection, if decided upon, would likely be held in September, just over a year before the October 2018 municipal election.

“Traditionally, the last year is light,” Walsh said.

“You try to do everything in the first three years. We try to get the really big issues out of the way before the last year of the election. The election has this tendency — they call it silly season for a reason.”

As with Lange, Walsh noted Singh’s high vote count in 2014 as a possible qualifier for the job.

“Arjun’s a good rep-

resentative for the city,” he said.

“I have no qualms about it. If that’s the name that comes up as mid-term mayor, I would definitely support him.”

Though he considered a mayoral run in 2014, Walsh said the interim mayor’s job isn’t a good fit for him right now.

Christian declined to speculate about the interim mayor’s position.

Coun. Pat Wallace told KTW she favours a byelection, should Milobar require replacing.

The mayor could not be reached for comment by press deadline yesterday.

Highland Valley Copper and the union representing more than 1,000 of its employees are bringing in a mediator in an attempt to get through an impasse in contract talks.

A company official said the two sides have not met this month. The contract between Highland Valley Copper and United Steelworkers Local 7619 expired at the end of September.

“Vince Ready [B.C. Labour Relations Board mediator] is coming in on Jan. 9,” company spokesman Peter Martel said.

“It’s fair to say the two parties haven’t met in December for negotiation.”

Martel otherwise declined to comment on negotiations.

Union president Kyle Wolff could not be

reached for comment.

In an update to members published on its website at the end of November, Wolff accused the company of costcutting and running down its plant in a bid to boost profits.

The union also alleged the company is attempting to contract out jobs and hire casual employees.

“Over the last three years, we have cut over 200 jobs, putting more stress on each employee, ensuring they are overworked; all in a long-term plan to get the language they are proposing right now,” Wolff wrote to members.

“It all comes back to respect.

They do not respect you, or the work you do.”

Industrial vacancy rate in city at historic lows CAM FORTEMS

Commercial, industrial and office vacancy rates in Kamloops remained stable in the most recent quarter, according to the latest reports from Colliers International.

The real-estate firm released statistics from the second quarter of the year showing little change in the three sectors: • retail vacancies increased to 7.8 per cent compared to the end of 2015; • office vacancy rate fell slightly, to 4.92 per cent from five per cent, in the fourth quarter of 2015; • industrial vacancy rate dipped to what Colliers called one the lowest in the city’s history, at 3.78 per cent.

Colliers said healthy interest in industrial space stems in part from the city’s location in the province.

“The city has historically always experienced a high tenant demand due to its location at the intersect of several highways and

we expect this trend to continue,” the report states.

Over the past six months, builders have added 35,000 square feet of industrial space, including the Noremac Group of Companies’ building in Gateway Industrial Park in Dallas.

Cummins Canada recently purchased a lot in Gateway, with plans to relocate from Southgate Industrial Park next to Sahali.

On the retail side, Colliers noted the Target’s former 128,0000-square-foot space at Sahali Mall remaining empty is

keeping the vacancy rate at higher-than-normal levels.

The only new retail building under construction is at Landmark Place on McGill Road.

The office vacancy rate is down slightly in the most recent quarter and Colliers said it remains stable.

Two new office buildings were recently constructed, at 520 St. Paul St. downtown and in Cityview Shopping Centre in Aberdeen.

Colliers expects the office vacancy rate to decline slightly, with downtown lease rates forecasted to rise.

Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn?

Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there.

Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart.

Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond.

Is it all real?

Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus!

Thank God he lives!

TRUMP-HITLER CARTOON HITS THE MARK Editor: Thank you for publishing Ingrid Rice’s editorial cartoon of Dec. 13 comparing Donald Trump with Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.

While those tyrants had much longer political careers leading to their dictatorships (and, some would say, were therefore more “qualified”), the aspects of Trump’s rise, such as demonizing specific groups, exaggerated or invented claims (lies) and (to some of us) preposterous tough-guy

talk, sound a lot like our history lessons.

Trump made a point of encouraging bad behaviour (roughing up protesters, etc.) at his rallies.

Chris Alexander, a Conservative Party of Canada leadership contender, first said he was “uncomfortable” with “lock her up!” chants when he mentioned Alberta Premier Rachel Notley during a speech to party faithful.

But he was still shown smiling and nodding to the beat of the

chant that was far too loud and went on far too long.

I hope the several worst (most extreme) of Conservative candidates will not be given undue attention in the coming months while they cater to the hard right (and please don’t call them alt-right, for they are not benign nor cute).

They would distinguish themselves from a large field by strong candidates, as Trump did.

The team of volunteers behind Operation Red Nose were kept busy last weekend as the program had its busiest one in the 20 years it has been operating.

Twenty rides were given last Thursday, 146 on Friday and 184 on Saturday — 350 in total provided by 149 volunteers.

The weekend’s donation total came to $7,694.73, money that goest to PacificSport Interior B.C. to help area athletes.

Program co-ordinator Katie Klassen said an extra night — tonight — is being added to the schedule, with rides available from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Kettle Campaign nearing 70 per cent of goal

By Tuesday, the Salvation Army kettle campaign had hit about $132,000 — about the same amount it had raised at a comparable date last year.

Campaign co-ordinator Christine Kirby said she’s happy with that, but doesn’t expect the fundraiser that helps the church with its many projects in the community to hit the goal of $200,000.

Among services provided are food hampers, vouchers to buy items at its thrift store, bus tickets, job support, a mobile kitchen and emergency services when required in the community.

With just a couple of days left for the campaign, some additional volunteers would be helpful, Kirby said.

Another bust of breast-enhancement scammer STAFF REPORTER

A Kamloops woman who was jailed last year after scamming a senior to pay for fake breasts is back behind bars.

Brandie Bloor made a brief in-custody appearance in Kamloops provincial court yesterday.

Last month, a warrant was issued for the

40-year-old, who is facing 14 new fraudrelated charges.

According to court documents, Bloor is facing six counts of fraudulent personation relating to six separate individuals, three counts of fraud, two counts each of uttering forged documents and possessing identity documents and a single count of forgery.

The fraud charges

Bloor is facing relate to allegations involving Scotiabank, Dearborn Ford and an individual listed as a complainant on one of her personation charges.

In June 2015, a Kamloops judge sentenced Bloor to nine months in jail and ordered she repay more than $17,000 to an 83-year-old man she bilked in her bid for bigger breasts.

Court heard Bloor was arrested after the man received a call from a medical clinic telling him he was in arrears.

The man had never met Bloor, court heard, but she used his stolen driver’s licence to obtain a loan for breast-enhancement surgery.

Bloor initially denied the fraud, but police found a tattoo on her

stomach that matched the description provided by the doctor who performed her surgery.

She eventually pleaded guilty.

Bloor will return to court on Dec. 29.

Hip’s Downie named CP Newsmaker of the Year DAVID FRIEND

TORONTO — Gord Downie’s spirited fight with terminal brain cancer struck a chord with Canadians in 2016.

Whether he was packing arenas for the Tragically Hip’s summer tour or igniting a renewed dialogue on reconciliation with aboriginals, the poetic singer-songwriter’s relentless energy offered hope in the starkest of circumstances.

His widespread impact on Canadian culture inspired news editors and directors across the country, including Kamloops This Week’s Chris Foulds, to name him the Canadian Press Newsmaker of the Year.

Downie received 26 votes (39 per cent) in the annual survey, marking the first time in the Newsmaker’s 70-year history that an entertainer has been selected for the title.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was second with 18 votes (27 per cent), while Fort McMurray fire Chief Darby Allen and fourtime Olympic medallist Penny Oleksiak tied with eight votes each (12 per cent).

It was Downie’s public struggle with mortality that seemed to connect most deeply with voters.

His stage performance, captured vividly during the Hip’s televised final tour stop in Kingston, Ont., was a celebration of life juxtaposed against the looming promise of death.

“The outpouring of support and grief for Downie was unprecedented, and the kind of shared cultural experience that doesn’t happen often,’’ wrote Treena Wood, program director at CKWX News 1130 in Vancouver.

“Everyone will remember where they were when they watched that final concert.’’

filling arenas. Their perseverance earned a loyal fan base, particularly with working-class Canadians, who made anthems out of the band’s biggest hits like Ahead by a Century and Bobcaygeon.

When Downie’s health condition was revealed in May — only a few weeks after the Fort McMurray wildfires left many Canadians heartbroken — it felt like another kick in the gut for the nation.

“He represents all those dealing with carnage in their lives,’’ said Dori Modney, news director at CHLB and CJBZ Radio in Lethbridge, Alta.

“Whether it’s the wildfire or the downturn in the economy, many people have soldiered on, in spite of their world crashing around them.’’

Downie’s situation was unique in that he was still healthy enough to perform. That gave him an opportunity to shape his own final act.

When the Hip’s managers sat alongside Downie’s neurooncologist Dr. James Perry at a press conference in May — absent the band — it became clear that Downie had a plan. Despite battling glioblastoma, an incurable and rare form of cancer, the 52-year-old father of four was going to stick with the longstanding adage of the entertainment industry: The show must go on.

The Man Machine Poem tour became Canada’s hottest summer ticket. Fans jostled for seats but many were left disappointed when they sold out almost immediately.

But the Hip struck an agreement with the CBC to air the band’s climactic final show in Kingston — their hometown. The concert was a TV ratings hit, drawing an estimated audience of more than four million Canadians. In all, 11.7 million Canadians tuned in for at least a portion of the broadcast on TV, radio or online and thousands more gathered across the country for public screenings.

Many of them, not even Hip fans necessarily, got swept up in Downie’s story as a can-

cer fighter who refused to surrender quietly.

At the show, an impassioned Downie led the band through a nearly three-hour set that included most of the Hip’s biggest songs. He also used the national platform to call for more attention to the inequities faced by indigenous people, particularly in the North.

As he pointed out the prime minister, who sat in the audience wearing a Hip T-shirt, he sent a message.

“He cares about the people way up North that we were trained our entire lives to ignore, trained our entire lives to hear not a word of what’s going on up there,’’ Downie said.

“And what’s going on up there ain’t good.’’

His words hinted where Downie would shift his energy next.

Less than a month later, the singer-song-

writer lifted the veil on Secret Path, a solo multimedia project that recounts the life of 12-year-old Chanie Wenjack, who died in 1966 after running away from a residential school. Spread across a full-length album, a graphic novel and animated film, Downie’s interpretation of the child’s final hours brought a fresh urgency to a story many never heard.

Earlier this month, an emotional Downie was recognized during the Assembly of First Nations special assembly in Gatineau, Que., and was anointed the Man Who Walks Among the Stars.

“It will take 150 years, or seven generations, to heal the wound of the residential school, to become a country that can truly call ourselves Canada,’’ Downie said.

A Shuswap educational group will provide training for aboriginal security personnel at construction sites — including pipelines — through a new federal-provincial program.

The Secwepemc Cultural Education Society will run a basic security-training program for aboriginal people.

The Brown rink couldn’t have asked for a better warm-up for the 2017 B.C. Junior Curling Championships.

With the rink’s final shot at a provincial junior championship on the horizon — the competition will get underway on Dec. 27 at the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster — Team Brown was already taking advantage of every opportunity to get in a little extra work in this winter.

So, when Curling Canada approached the foursome — which includes skip Corryn Brown and lead Samantha Fisher, both of Kamloops, Nanaimo’s Marika Van Osch at third and New Westminster’s Dezaray Hawes at second — wondering if it would be willing to represent Canada at the 2016 Qinghai China Women’s International, the group only had one question: “Why us?”

“She kind of just said that she could see potential in us and we were up-and-coming,” Brown told KTW earlier this week.

“We weren’t really sure why she picked us, but we’re definitely glad she did.”

The International featured eight teams — Canada, China, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland and the United States — and was the perfect precursor for the 2017 B.C. juniors. It was a seven-game round-robin. Games were 10 ends each. There was the opportunity for two playoff contests.

The Brown rink took advantage of both elimination games, defeating Scotland 9-4 in the championship contest to win gold, bringing home a purse of US$10,000.

[China] was a long trip and winning definitely made it much more tolerable to sit on that 11-hour plane ride,” Brown said, noting some nations sent their top women’s team to China, while others sent junior competitors the Brown rink could see if they made it to the world junior stage.

“This is basically going to be our second provincials when we go to Royal City on the 26th,” she continued, remarking on the similarities between the two tournaments.

“We have definitely had some

really good games leading up to it.”

The Brown rink will travel to the B.C. Junior Championships on Boxing Day, getting set for their first contest against Delta’s Bourassa rink on Dec. 27, with a potential gold-medal game set for Jan. 1.

The team’s coach, Kamloops’ Allison MacInnes, feels the foursome is right on track and is peaking at perfect time.

“I think we’ve done the work this year,” she said.

do what we can to put ourselves in the best position possible — sometimes it’s just not your year at the end of the year. But we also know championships aren’t won in September, October, November.

“I think we have as good a shot as anybody else does to win it.”

The goal has always been to get back to representing Canada on the world junior stage one more time.

“It has been a season of a lifetime, to be honest,” Brown said.

“If you would have told me at the beginning of the year that I’d have the chance to play at a Grand Slam and go to China, all before provincials, I’d have been pretty flabbergasted.

“Looking back on our season, we’ve had a pretty incredible run so far and I hope it’s not over.”

MONTREAL — Playing on home ice with a team built for speed and tenacity could be a winning combination for Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship.

While Canada is missing teenage stars like Connor McDavid and Mitch Marner, who have already graduated to the National Hockey League, their closest rivals will also be without top talent at the tournament, which runs from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Toronto and Montreal.

Coach Dominique Ducharme brings a team four lines deep in scoring ability with a decent defence and what they expect will be better goaltending with Carter Hart and Connor Ingram than the Canadian side that was eliminated by Finland in the quarter-finals of last year’s world juniors in Helsinki.

Canada has five players back from that team: Forwards Dylan Strome, Julien Gauthier, Mitchell Stephens and Mathew Barzal and defenceman Thomas Chabot. Forwards like Quebec league goals leader Mathieu Joseph, 2016 third-overall NHL draft pick Pierre-Luc Dubois, Ontario Hockey League scoring ace Taylor Raddysh and University of North Dakota sniper Tyson Jost should meafour lines that can provide offence.

“Our pace and our skill and how hard we work, we put those three things together and it really works well,’’ Jost said this week.

The United States, learning that scoring ace and Vancouver Canucks prospect Brock Boeser will sit out with a wrist injury, should also be in the hunt along with Finland, Russia and Sweden.

Strome, a rangy scorer and faceoff ace picked third overall in 2015 by Arizona, is expected to centre Canada’s top line and first power-play unit. New York Islanders’ 2015 first-rounder Barzal will be looked to for scoring, particularly if Ducharme keeps him on a line with Joseph and Raddysh.

But mostly, it will be teamwork and effort that will be Canada’s motor, rather than the elite skill of any individual.

“We’re coming together,’’ Strome said. “We’re close.

“We’re all happy when anyone scores. The chemistry’s building and that’s a good thing for this tournament.’’

Much of the pre-tournament talk has been about who will not play, and that list is certainly impressive.

Besides McDavid and Marner, Canadians who are eligible but weren’t loaned for the tournament include defence-

man Jacob Chychrun and forwards Travis Konecny, Anthony Beauvillier and Lawson Crouse.

But the Americans are missing Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, Matt Tkachuk, Zach Werenski and Noah Hanifin, while Finland is without the top three scorers from last year’s tournament — Patrik Laine, Jesse Puljujarvi and Sebastian Aho. Others out are Russian defenceman Ivan Provorov, Switzerland’s Denis Malgin and the Czech Republic’s big centre Pavel Zacha.

Canada will play the preliminary round in Group B at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto with the U.S., Russia, Slovakia and Latvia. The semifinals and final will be in Montreal.

Play opens Dec. 26 with Canada against Russia, Denmark vs. Sweden, Finland vs. Czech and Latvia vs. the U.S. Canada has won the event 16 times since its inception in 1977, but gold has been elusive since losing the 2010 final to the U.S. The 2015 gold with a team that included McDavid, Sam Reinhart, Curtis Lazar and Kamloops product Joe Hicketts was their first in six years.

Request for Proposals: Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band (LSLIB) Financial Advisor Expressions of interest are requested for the position of Financial Advisor.

This is a part-time contract position with services to be provided on an “as-needed” basis. The role will encompass all areas of accounting from financial accounting to forecasting and include specific project work. Working alongside the Administrator and department managers, the successful candidate will be required to advise on budget forecasting and budget management issues, as well as on financial management aspects of specific projects. In addition, the Financial Advisor will help to develop the business case for various land development projects, business ventures, acquisitions and business decisions made by LSLIB and its affiliated companies. The candidate will also provide advice as needed to Chief and Council, and will assist the Finance Department in ensuring that the LSLIB financial management systems meet a high standard of efficiency and accountability.

Candidates should have professional accounting designation, preferably with substantial prior experience in financial management in a First Nation context.

Obituaries & In Memoriam In Loving Memory of Janet Norah Wallace March 1, 1937 – December 24, 2011

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of our Wife, Mom and Nannie at the age of 70 on December 19, 2016 after a short illness.

Lynn will be greatly missed by Lorne her loving husband of 48 years, her six children Michael (Kelly), David (Lisa), Kathy, Amanda, Valerie (Russell) and Stephanie (Simon), ten grandchildren Matthew, Alora, Tate, Reegan, Rebecca, Zachary, Beth, Benjamin, Samantha and Eli, as well as many relatives and friends. Her eleventh grandchild is expected any day. She was predeceased by her parents Patrick and Evelyn McKernan of Montréal, QC. Lynn was born in Montréal, QC on November 13, 1946. In 1955, her family moved to Two Mountains, QC where she met and married her husband Lorne. Lynn left Two Mountains in 1968, raising her family with her geologist husband in the Northern Canadian communities of Lynn Lake, MB, Ft. St. James, BC, Yellowknife and Pine Point, NWT before settling in Kamloops in 1981. When the children were older, she enjoyed volunteering with Kamloops Community Policing and the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. In all that she did, family was first and foremost in her thoughts.

Five years have gone by since you left us all.

Christmas was always an exciting time for you.

We are all coming together to celebrate and relive memories at our home of over fifty years.

The care and compassion shown by the staff at the Royal Inland Hospital ICU was much appreciated during this difficult time, as were the services of her family doctor and specialists.

Should friends desire, the family would appreciate donations made to the Easter Seal House in Vancouver, BC for their support in the past.

Never to be forgotten.

Melanie Laureen McIntosh March 12, 1965 – December 15, 2016

Surrounded by family members and a steady stream of friends, Melanie McIntosh died on the evening of Thursday, December 15, 2016.

The strength of her resolve and the depth of her hope for recovery were inspirational during her three year health struggle. Her death has left a great void for her family, colleagues and her many friends.

Melanie is survived by her devoted husband Donald Dalgleish, her three adored sons Curtis (Allison), Gavin (Katrina) and Russell (Paige) and her beloved grandsons Heath and Archer.

Despite her untimely death, Melanie accomplished much during her lifetime. Moving to Kamloops in 1992, she wasted no time in achieving her RN designation. She became a proud and committed member of Royal Inland Hospital. She touched many lives professionally and personally working mainly in the ICU and PAR units.

Although committed to working at RIH, her first priority was always being a mother. Melanie was continually providing counsel and creating opportunities for her boys in their many activities - Melanie was always present, cheering the loudest! She became a “second mom” to many. She was a devoted caregiver to her sons and others and always reminded them “I want you guys to feel loved.” Melanie loved animals, adventures and cooking. She entertained often – Sunday dinners were of great importance to her. She was known for her sense of humour (oh, those jokes), wit and contagious laughter. Melanie never wanted to miss anything - she took part in everything that she could. She will be intensely missed and never forgotten.

Family and friends will be welcomed at a Memorial Service and reception in the New Year.

LARRY WAYNE MALOSKI December 31, 1935 - December 15, 2016

On Thursday morning, December 15th, 2016 Larry Maloski, 80 years, peacefully passed away at Overlander Extended Care Home. He was the only son of Lewis and Margaret Maloski both of Brandon, Manitoba.

Larry married the love of his life Dolores (Sitter) on March 2, 1957 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Their journey to Kamloops came through the Prairies with stops in Saskatoon and Calgary, eventually residing in North Kamloops. It was here that they became the proud parents of Ladd Louis Maloski, and Lisa Katherine Fontaine. Larry always lived modestly, paid in cash and followed a clear line between ‘needs’ and ‘wants’.

In the early 1960s, a local business, B&M Automatic Transmissions Ltd. was born. It was built upon strong customer service, quality workmanship and an honest day’s work, six days/week for the next 35+ years. It afforded him the means to provide for his family, and build strong community connections.

Larry enjoyed time in the outdoors and the beauty of the surrounding Kamloops landscape. An avid fisherman, hunter and nature lover, he became a long standing Boy Scout Leader, who enjoyed sharing the experience of weekend canoe excursions and overnight camping trips with the youth of our community. Importantly, Larry held a hand in the initial construction of Ruckell Point Camp through the 70s on the Shuswap Lake. In addition, Larry and Dolores were long standing billet parents supporting the Kamloops Junior Oilers and Blazers Hockey Clubs. They were season ticket holders from their early beginnings through the 80s, and took turns joining the team to Memorial Cup Championships in Portland and Hamilton.

On July 14, 1989 Larry became a widower and he would retire from B&M on his birthday December 31, 1999. Retirement was highlighted with some travel excursions, watching

sporting events and academic accomplishments of his active grandchildren, socializing with close friends and sharing quality companionship with ‘Mooch’ our golden retriever-Jack.

Grandpa Larry devoted himself unconditionally to help support his family, spread kindness and generosity to his grandchildren, and touch those whom he crossed paths as a straight shooting, kind, old soul. ~ ALWAYS REMEMBERED ~ Larry is survived by his son Ladd (Monica) and grandchildren Nicolas, Madison and Connor, daughter Lisa Fontaine and her daughter Alexandria.

Additionally, brother-in-law Don (Leona) their children/grandchildren Karen (Darren), Amanda and Kayla, Blaine, Rhea (Sam), Brittany, predeceased cousin (Arlene Rostron) daughter Janine-Nicole, extended family/daughter Elizabeth, sons Ryan, Mark, Robbie, predeceased brother-in-law (Ken Sitter) sons Howie and Cory, predeceased sister (Luella Joy) children Susan and Doug, predeceased business partner and forever brother (Robert Burns). ~ NEVER FORGOTTEN ~ An intimate service will be arranged for Larry at Hillside Cemetery on July 14, 2017.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sharon Louise Frampton (nee Breen) of Kamloops, BC on December 4, 2016, at 57 years of age, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Vancouver, BC on March 14, 1959. Sharon is survived by her husband of 25 years David and son Craig, both of Kamloops, grandson Linden of Kelowna, brothers Victor (Brunella), Michael (Diane) and David (Dale Ann) and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends and coworkers. Sharon was predeceased by her father Robert, mother Shirley and brother Bob, all from Vancouver, BC.

Thank You to the residents of Glenfair Seniors Complex.

Our Dad, Frank Anderson died in his suite on December 13, 2016.

Glenfair was his home for the last 10 years and he considered many of you a part of his extended family.

Sharon graduated from high school in Vancouver in 1977, and worked briefly at Vancouver Fisheries. She began working at Canada Post in Vancouver full time in 1988 and later transferred to Kamloops, where she remained employed until her untimely passing. Sharon enjoyed watching her son Craig participating in many sports growing up. She was a dedicated fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and Vancouver Canucks. Sharon was a kind, giving person who always had a joke and a smile to share. She was a very dedicated and hardworker who will be sadly missed by all that had the honour of being a part of her life.

Thank you for the friendship and love you showed him over the years.

A special thank you to Sharon Langland and Drake Smith and to her many co-workers for the help and support at this difficult time.

A Celebration of Sharon’s Life will be held in Mission, BC and Kamloops, BC. Notification will be posted at a later date.

Shirley graduated from UBC with a degree in Science.

She received her Laboratory Tech papers and moved to Toronto to work at the Toronto General Hospital.

While in Toronto, on a blind date, she met the love of her life Robert Gray and they were married in Vancouver in 1954. Bob and Shirley enjoyed a fantastic and exciting life together with their four daughters and spent summers at Shuswap Lake and winters at Tod Mountain. They travelled extensively and made friends wherever they went. After Bob died Shirley travelled with her daughters or on her own and ventured to Machu Picchu, the Galapagos Islands and a cruise around Cape Horn.

Family meant everything to Shirley. She was loving, generous, involved and supportive. She loved volunteering as a Girl Guide Leader, sewing costumes for dance recitals, helping with homework or music

Pedro was a social, passionate and private man, who loved to travel, make new friends, and eat and drink well! He was always quick and generous in extending a helping hand and could never resist a good deal. He had a great sense of adventure and was always open to new experiences, like taking a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, attending ZZ Top and Nazareth concerts, or even flying a glider in Hawaii for his 75th birthday! He lived life by his own rules and, right to the end, admitted having no great regrets in his life.

A special thank you to Mary-Ann and Frank Etchart, Doug, Al, Frank and Ian for the love and valued friendship they each brought to his life for many decades. The numerous trips made by many great family and friends to the hospital in White Rock, were also a true gift which brought much light, laughter, hope and love during a very difficult time.

Shirley was born in 1930 at Vancouver General Hospital to Henry Geoffrey Malcolmson and nee Geraldine Charlotte Fowler.

Pedro was born in Urdax, Navarra in the Basque region of Spain, and immigrated to Canada in 1964. He was proud of his heritage but even more proud to be a Canadian. He settled in Kamloops, BC in 1968, where he worked primarily as a welder, but he also had experience as a blacksmith, plumber, logger, carpenter, mason and mechanic. In the early 1980’s, he started ET Air, a heavyduty equipment rental and repair shop. He had an amazing can-do attitude, was extremely hardworking and very resourceful; qualities that served him well, in business, for over 30 years.

She is survived by her daughters Susan (Paul) Devick, Sandy Devick, Cindy Stewart, Robyn (Cam) Mackenzie, her eleven grandchildren Alex (Sandra) Devick, David (Lyndsay) Devick, Michael (Krystal) Devick, William (Donnelle) Devick, Lindsay (Aaron) Devick Newman, Blair Stewart, Robert (Chelsea) Stewart, Margo (Cody) Stewart Cartwright, Karli Mackenzie, Christine Mackenzie, Claire Mackenzie, great-grandchildren William, Arabella, Madilyn, Ashton, Arya, Keegan, Jax, Luke and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her loving husband Robert Gray.

Pedro will be deeply missed by his four children Carmen, Nancy, Lynda and Pedro, their respective partners, three grandchildren James, Spencer and Theo and extended family members. He is predeceased by his parents Pedro Etchart and Francisca Maritorena, brothers Joe (Jose) and Joaquin and second wife Filo Rodriguez.

He was diagnosed with leukemia in early September and spent his last months fighting like a true warrior, all the while maintaining his sense of hope, humour and feistiness, with a twinkle in his beautiful clear blue eyes. He was greatly loved by many and will never be forgotten.

Shirley was passionate about so many things and a willing participant. She had a great love for the outdoors and all sports. She was an avid downhill skier, golfer and tennis player. Culture was a huge part of her life and she regularly attended the Vancouver Opera, Kamloops Symphony, Western Canada Theatre and Kamloops Art Gallery.

Shirley loved to play Bridge. It kept her mind active and it was sociable. Shirley was very social and was genuinely interested in people. She had so many friends and had a way of making each one feel uniquely special. She was beautiful, elegant and a very classy dresser. She loved to entertain and was a very talented and graceful hostess. Her dinner parties were legendary.

Shirley’s love for life and learning never slowed down and she kept up with all the latest technology especially checking Facebook on her iPhone. It kept her connected to family and friends.

A Tea Party in memory of Shirley will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Italian Culture Centre (Colombo Hall), 814 Lorne Street at 2:00 pm.

Ronald “Ron” Coxon

February 23, 1945 – December 20, 2016 Ronald Coxon of Kamloops passed away on December 20, 2016 at 71 years of age.

Predeceased by his loving wife Audrey Coxon and survived by his children Paul and Michael (Wanda) of Kamloops and grandchildren Alex, Devyn, Ayla, Madisen, Gavin, Matthiew and Mitchell greatgrandchildren Ryder, Jaxyn and Fynn, brothers and sisters, Karen (Joe) Salt, sister-in-law Christine (Graeme) and brother-in-law Alan (Sophie) all of Engand, with numerous nieces nephews and cousins in the UK. Predeceased by his parents Henry and Edna May, brothers William, Henry, Allan, Michael and George and sisters Jean, Violet and Edna.

Ron was born in Seaham, County Durham, England where he met Audrey, his flower, and they were married in 1966 for 49 wonderful years. They immigrated to Canada in 1977, first to Leaf Rapids, Manitoba then to Logan Lake, British Columbia then finally settling in Kamloops with his family. Ron worked his whole life mining, starting in the coal mines of England, a short stint in Leaf Rapids, Manitoba and finally Highland Valley Copper, where he retired from after almost 30 years there.

Ron will eternally be missed by the many people’s lives he touched both on a social and professional level.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 30, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, 285 Fortune Drive, with Brian Arnold officiating.

Spontaneity, joy among favourite holiday activities Submitted by reader Joan Dozlaw of Kamloops

H

eading for the shopping mall, I told myself this has got to be my favourite Christmas activity.

However, when I stood in line for hours at the tills, I told myself there’s got to be a better Christmas activity than this.

In the kitchen with new recipes and inspiration to bake up a storm for the holidays, I told myself this is wonderful — until the gingerbread house

‘I joined in the sing-along with the bunch of strangers who knew how to warble the beautiful carols’ came crashing down along with my patience to get it all done before the 25th.

I dragged out the old Christmas tree and the even-older ornaments.

Looking over each sentimental remembrance of Christmases past, I told myself this is my passion — decorating the tree.

Then, I saw a fabulous tree in the garden centre. It was a masterpiece compared to my

Charlie Brown makeover.

The morning that pristine white snow blanketed the yard, I told myself, yay, it’s time for my snowshoes to come out of storage.

I was hyped, but down I went. I couldn’t get back up!

Off they came and I ran to the car in my sock feet. My icy toes throbbed inside my sopping wet socks.

In front of the fire-

place, frozen feet up on a deep comfy footstool, I told myself you can’t beat the atmosphere of a blazing fire with crackling logs.

But, since I hadn’t cleaned the darn chimney out for who knows how long, smoke filled the room.

Guests arrived for the Christmas Eve potluck supper.

As luck would have it, there were no pots.

Only cookies and

cakes. I told myself, I can do without potlucks.

Gathered in the living room to sing carols, everyone stood around me at the piano, but I had no sheet music.

A capella wasn’t such a good alternative for over-the-hill choristers who sound flat and off key without accompaniment.

Saying goodbye to the gang felt like I was finally getting close to

identifying what my favourite Christmas activity is — waving goodbye.

As they got into their cars, real carolers strolled up the walk.

This is the ultimate, I told myself, but a mighty wind blasted my Santa cap off my head and pounded the frigid ice storm smack in my face.

Fighting the elements, the carolers’ held on to their scarves and toques and we were all forced inside like too many bodies squeezed in an elevator.

Now what?

Crumbly cookies, including happy face gingerbread boys with broken limbs and a shattered gingerbread house were delicious with our hot cocoa.

I joined in the singalong with the bunch of strangers who knew how to warble the beautiful carols.

Warm drafts circulated around us from the furnace and my shaggy Christmas tree glowed like our faces.

Caught up in the joy and spontaneity of it all, I told myself these were my favourite activities of Christmas.

The grand mansion holds more than 1,000 stunning objets d’art: rosewood chairs inlaid with mother-of-pearl designs, needlepoint counterpanes in gold thread, an entire room filled with showcases of Venetian crystal goblets, vases and china, delicate jewelry, satin embroidered shoes, brocade tunics and heavy, ornate bridal head dresses and many more rare collectibles.

The Chinese wedding bedchamber — used for one night only by bridal couples in the Kapitan’s family — has an immense bed with satin bolsters under a silken canopy.

Custom dictates a basket containing a cockerel and a hen is placed near the foot of the bed. On opening the lid after the wedding night, the one that flies out first determines the sex of the couple’s first baby.

“What if they both fly out together?” I asked Amin, my guide.

“Ah, then — twins!” he said. “If birds stay inside basket, means no children.”

He grinned impishly.

“Then, the man can marry another wife!”

Amin said the building adjunct to the main mansion — which has a shrine to the Kapitan’s deceased descendents — is haunted.

“You can hear something or someone moving around, turning on a bathroom shower, rattling dishes in the kitchen,” he said.

“But, when you go to look, nobody is there.”

Amin shivered slightly and said a voice in an empty room across the hallway whispered terima kasih (thank you) in a visitor’s ear the previous week.

“It scared her like anything,” he said.

On my last evening, as I drove through her city streets, Penang glittered with thousands of tiny bulbs, looped like jewelled necklaces across her throat.

Sidewalks and Gurney Drive’s outdoor cafes thronged with families and friends chatting, laughing and enjoying the cooler evening breezes off the ocean.

Waves whispered secrets against the seawall.

Shadows deepened and the lady drew the cloak of night about her shoulders.

Police step up drunk-driving enforcement Police CounterAttack roadblocks have begun and will continue through the Christmas season.

“It doesn’t take much alcohol or many drugs to impair your driving,” Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said.

“Just because you’ve only had a couple of drinks doesn’t mean you’re OK to drive.”

Shelkie said the program means extra officers on the road looking for impaired drivers for the next month.

Through three weekend, local Mounties are finding them, with 38 drivers having been relieved of their vehicles.

Shelkie noted British Columbia’s drinking-driving laws are tough on impaired drivers.

The vehicle can be immediately taken off the road and impounded for between three and 30 days.

Costs related to the offences can be between $600 and $4,000.

“And, a person who is found to be impaired while driving is subject to criminal charges,” Shelkie said.

Police recommend planning ahead before imbibing.

That can include securing a designated driver, having money for a taxi, knowing when the buses are running or deciding to use a ride-service like Operation Red Nose, which drives customers home in their own vehicles in exchange for a donation to PacificSport.

Kamloops residents urged to give blood in new year Canadian Blood Services is reminding donors and potential donors in Kamloops of the importance of booking an appointment to give blood right, noting clinics are open over the Christmas holiday.

As a result of poor weather across the country, Canadian Blood Services has had to cancel a number of clinics and has also seen a decline in the number of donors able to attend clinics.

Upcoming clinics in Kamloops include the following at Calvary Community Church,

JUMP in and lend a hand Jubilee Urban Movement Partners (JUMP) is serving up two Christmas meals this weekend and is looking for volunteers and donations.

The dinners tomorrow and on Christmas Day will take place at 185 Royal Ave., at the corner of Tranquille Road on the North Shore, starting at 5 p.m.

Co-ordinator Glenn Hilke is hoping to have turkeys, warm clothing, sleeping bags, boots, hats, gloves, toys and games donated.

Volunteers are needed for food preparation and serving, gift wrapping and gift giving.

An apocalyptic view of Christmas

W

hat is Christ­ mas?

Is the event important at all in 2016 AD? To begin with, there’s certainly noth­ ing important about the date, Dec. 25.

It came from the pagan birthday obser­ vance of a young con­ quered sun.

It certainly isn’t biblical.

During that period, the pagans held two weeks of feast, featur­ ing parades, special music, gift­giving and lighting candles on green trees.

Some ambitious church members living in that culture decided to Christianize the holiday.

In 336 AD, Emperor Constantine declared Christ’s birthday an official Roman holiday.

There were some protesters, such as Bishop John Chrysostom, who rebuked Christians for adopting this pagan thing.

But it stuck.

We really don’t know when Jesus was born.

Dates such as Jan. 6, March 29, April 20, May 20, and even Sept. 29 have been thrown around.

But nobody really knows.

Dec. 25 is strictly a grab­bag day dedicat­ ed to a pagan festival that has nothing to do with Scriptures.

So, it isn’t really the date that has any historical significance (unlike like July 1 or Nov.11).

If it isn’t the day, what about the name “Christmas?”

Well, it’s a short form of Christ’s mass, which grew out of a specific feast day called Christos Masse. which was established in 1038 AD — which also has nothing to do with Scriptures.

Christmas is not a holy day, not a divinely prescribed day at least.

In fact, it was only in 1224 AD that St. Francis of Assisi really started the baby man­ ger thing when he started a new tradition

by surrounding Mary in a manger with a baby.

What about Christmas rituals that might make it Christian?

None of it.

None of it is com­ manded by the Lord, none of it is apostolic, none of it was ever observed by the early church.

In fact, the Puritans in early America called Christmas “Romish Rags.”

They deliberately worked on Dec. 25 to express their disdain for a pagan holiday.

As a matter of fact, the English Puritans passed a law in 1644 AD making Christmas a working day.

If all of the above is just a bit too much, what exactly is Christmas? Strip off the date, the name, the cards, the trees, the presents and what have we got?

Nothing.

Worse than that, at times it sort of turns into bedlam (the very word bedlam comes from Bethlehem, but that’s a different story).

What about the birth of Christ ,then?

That is indeed some event, but it’s not something to be cel­ ebrated only once a year, but every day.

Secondly, we enjoy time with family and friends — sharing our love and being together is impor­ tant because it gives Christians the oppor­ tunity to catch a world at least aware of Jesus and give them the truth.

In fact, Christmas is a depressing time for many people.

Department of Mental Hygiene has said the Christmas season is marked by greater emotional stress and more acts of violence than any other time of the year.

The question is always asked: “Who is Jesus Christ?”

At the end of the book of Revelation we read Jesus’ own word: “I, Jesus, have sent my angels to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David.”

If anyone wonders who the offspring is, the answer is: the One who was born in Bethlehem of the lin­ eage of David.

Lord Jesus Christ, whose birth we cel­ ebrate this month, is not just a baby in a manger. He is not just the subject of a chil­ dren’s story. He is far more.

The first time he came veiled in the form of a child and not too many people really knew about him.

But the second time he will come unveiled, without the robe of human flesh.

And when he comes, it would be abundantly clear to all the world just who he really is.

The first time a star marked his arrival.

The next time he comes, the whole heaven would roll up like a scroll and all the stars would fall out of the sky.

He himself will light them.

The first time he came, wise men and shepherds brought

him gifts. The next time he would bring gifts and rewards for his own The first time there was no room for him in the inn.

The next time the whole world won’t be able to contain his glory.

Only a few attended his arrival the first time. The next time every eye shall see him.

The first time, it was a baby. Soon he comes as the sovereign King and Lord.

In the Old Testament, prophet Isaiah portrayed Jesus as the Messiah, the Wonderful Counsellor, the Mighty God and the Prince of Peace.

We can look up all these pictures and study him as co­equal with God. But I am convinced that there is no more powerful and nor more vivid portraits of Christ than those found in the last book of the Bible, the Revelation, a book of apocalyptic events indeed.

Come back soon, Lord Jesus, the true Lord of Christmas.
