City buys two North Shore homes for $560K ANOTHER $120,000 WILL BE SPENT DEMOLISHING THE STRUCTURES NEAR SPIRIT SQUARE The City of Kamloops is hoping that tearing down two houses on the northeast side of Spirit Square on the North Shore will improve the atmosphere of the public area. According to minutes of an in-camera meeting from Sept. 13, released in the agenda for today’s council meeting, the city purchased two homes at 103 and 107 Yew St. for $560,000 and will spend up to $120,000 more to demolish them. The city hopes removing the homes will cre-
ate better sight lines to the public square from Tranquille Road and improve the use of the space, said development and engineering services director Marvin Kwiatkowski. “It’s really to revitalize that area, open it up,” he said. According to BC Assessment, the 107 Yew St. property was valued at $206,100 as of July 1, 2015, while the 103 Yew St. property was valued at $154,900. But real estate manager Dave Freeman said the market value for the two properties is higher than assessment because they generated rental income for their former owner, Maxwell
Enterprises Inc., a company headed by pharmacist Missagh Manshadi. Land title documents show Maxwell Enterprises purchased 107 Yew St. for $166,500 and 103 Yew St. for $120,000. Both properties were acquired in 2007, as council was debating potential locations for Spirit Square. Freeman said the rental income, which could be as high as $2,600 for the two properties combined, isn’t captured by BC Assessment. “It’s a tight rental market,” said Freeman. “Residential rental is very tight and people are paying.” See LANGE, A2

Emergency crews were on standby yesterday morning for landing of a Kelowna Flightcraft airplane at Kamloops Airport after a landing gear indicator failed. Kamloops Airport manager Fred Legace said the crew of the CV-580 notified the airport they deployed landing gear, but the indicator did not show the nose gear was properly in the locked position. The aircraft flew over the airport for a visual and staff on the ground confirmed it was deployed. “It’s not unusual that would happen,” Legace said of the indicator, noting the changing humidity and temperature. The aircraft landed without incident shortly after 9 a.m. The airport’s emergency services were ready and the Kamloops Fire Rescue was notified and en route.
