Christmas in Kamloops

Christmas Cheer Campaign The KTW Christmas Cheer Fund campaign is back again this winter, raising money for five local organizations that provide much-needed services in the community.

Thanks to the generous people of Kamloops, more than $100,000 has been raised since KTW adopted the fund in 2014.

Funds raised through the Cheer Fund this year will support the Y Women’s Emergency Shelter, New Life Community Kamloops, Family Tree Family Centre, Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre and Sensational Soups.

Who you are helping • New Life Community Kamloops expanded its meal program and resource centre hours last year, opening daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It also added another full-time outreach worker to help it provide a safe and welcoming environment and meet with people to help identify and then meet their needs.

New Life serves upwards of 45,000 meals a year.

This year, the organization has partnered with Emerald Centre on its cold-weather shelter program, which is staying open every day until March. New Life will provide an additional 25 beds and, together, the two organizations have pledged to turn no one away.

Money from the Christmas Cheer Fund helps New Life continue providing that access.

• The Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre helps people who have experienced trauma overcome and move forward. Its clients come from all walks of life and the violence can be sexual, battering or criminal-harassing.

They come from all age groups, from children to seniors.

The centre uses Christmas Cheer funds for toys and supplies to be used in therapy sessions with children.

Funds have also been used to provide snacks and meals to children and youth clients who often attend appointments malnourished.

Funds have also been used to expand its outreach services.

• The Family Tree Family Centre works with families living in isolation, feeling judged and not connected to their com-

munity. Many are living in poverty, experiencing violence and have mental-health or addiction issues.

Through a daily drop-in program, families can access social and professional support, educational workshops, case management, advocacy, a healthy lunch, a child-development consultant, referrals and access to its large donation room.

Money from the Christmas Cheer Fund helps it expand those programs.

• Sensational Soups is run out of Mt. Paul United Church, a program created by several retired Kamloopsians who volunteer to provide healthy lunches in a safe environment every Monday and Thursday.

It is completely reliant on donations and the two-dozen volunteers have often used their own money to finance it.

Until last year, the program received non-perishable and canned items from FoodShare to supplement the ingredients it uses to prepare soups, sandwiches, coffee, tea and juice.

Christmas Cheer Fund money goes toward buying food or equipment that might be needed in the kitchen.

• The Y Women’s Emergency Shelter provides shelter to women and children fleeing violence. Every year, several hundred of them will come to the shelter and several hundred more will receive non-residential care and counselling. In 2014, for example, 173 children lived in the shelter for a period of time.

How you can help Donations to the KTW Christmas Cheer Fund can be made online. Go to kamloopsthisweek.com and look for the penguin icon to be taken to a secure online portal. An email address is required. Donations can also be made at the KTW office, 1365B Dalhousie Dr., Mondays to Fridays between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Donations can also be dropped off at the United Way Thompson-Nicola-Cariboo at 177 Victoria St. Online donations greater than $20 receive a tax receipt via email; cash and cheque donations won’t generate a receipt until January.

Operation Red Nose Operation Red Nose is in need of volunteers to make its 20th annual campaign a success.

The designated driver service kicked off the holiday season Nov. 25 and is running every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from Dec. 3 to Dec. 17. It is also operating on Dec. 26, Dec. 30 and Dec. 31.

Red Nose offers a safe ride home for anyone who doesn’t feel fit to get behind the wheel. The by-donation service provides a team of three volunteers to drive impaired passengers home in their own vehicle. Volunteer positions include designated drivers, escort drivers, navigators and phone operators.

Red Nose has been operating nationally since 1984 and was introduced in Kamloops 20 years ago. All donations go to PacificSport, which supports amateur athletes and coaches in Kamloops.

PacificSport general manager Carolynn Boomer, who introduced Operation Red Nose locally, said the campaign has seen tremendous progress since beginning in 1997.

In its first year, Operation Red Nose raised $6,988. Last year, it pulled in close to $31,000, with 220 volunteers driving 24,810 kilometres over the course of the campaign.

Boomer said donations from this year’s campaign will go toward PacificSport’s efforts to increase physical literacy in youth and expanding sport programming to include families with autistic children.

Making Spirits Bright Campaign Kamloops-based Developing World Connections has some opportunities for giving this holiday season.

Its Making Spirits Bright Christmas campaign is focused on three initiatives: purchasing bricks for schools in Nepal, feeding special-needs children in Kenya and providing families in Guatemala with eco-stoves.

To donate to any of DWC’s causes, go online to developingworldconnections.org/fundraising/campaigns/

How it helps Families in Gorkha, Nepal, lost lives, loved ones and homes in the April 2015 earthquake and recovery efforts are ongoing.

DWC is hoping to finish a second school — the first was completed in 2016 — in the coming year. Donate $25 to purchase a brick to help complete the build.

A centre in the community of Maaii Mahu in Kenya is helping special-needs children find acceptance and get an education, while mothers are offered training to earn money and support their family. For $50, donors can help provide food for these children so they can thrive in school each day.

In San Miguel Duenas, Guatemala, families are relying

on an unstable income from agricultural work and use open fires in their homes for cooking and heat. The smoke fills the rooms and harms the lungs of those who live there.

A donation of $250 can make a Guatemalan family’s home healthier this Christmas, providing an eco-stove that vents smoke outside and uses less firewood. It can dramatically decrease the risk of respiratory illness.

Last year, DWC raised $41,360 for the Light Up Guatemala campaign. This year, it is hoping to reach at least $40,000 again.

DWC has several other ways donors can help, from donating Aeroplan miles and supporting a volunteer’s trip to joining DWC’s monthly giving program. For more information, go online to developingworldconnections.org.

Snow Angel Program The Snow Angel Program provides snow-removal services to seniors and residents with limited mobility.

It is a collaborative effort, organized by the Seniors Outreach Society, Volunteer Kamloops, TRU and the City of Kamloops.

Volunteers are matched with a resident in their neighbourhood and will remove snow from their driveway, stairs and walkways for safe use.

Secret Santa for seniors The Centre for Seniors Information is collecting donations for its Secret Santa project for low-income, high-risk seniors.

Trees are located at London Drugs, Independent Grocer and Sahali Mall with gift-suggestion tags on them.

Donations are also being collected at Brock Activity Centre, All Aboard Games, Schoening and First Memorial funeral services. Among suggestions are shampoo, lotion, soap, razors, socks coffee, gift cards, kitchen items, scarfs, slippers, gloves, books, coffee mugs, picture frames, large-piece puzzles, crossword books and bath products.
