Mayor Peter Milobar freely admits Movember’s main challenge isn’t his strong suit.

“I think this speaks for itself,” the mayor joked, gesturing to his week-old beard during last week’s city council meeting.

While growing facial hair is central to the annual fundraiser for men’s health concerns, “it’s never been something that I do well,” Milobar said.

However, until the end of the month, the mayor’s beard and moustache will remain as the City of Kamloops looks to raise more money for the cause than a team from Prince George led by Mayor Lyn Hall.

According to the bet, the mayor of the losing city will have to wear the opposing city’s WHL team jersey and drop the puck at an upcoming Blazers versus Cougars tilt.

As of yesterday, Prince George was in the lead with $865 in donations, while Kamloops had collected $308.

Milobar said he’s confident the city can catch up in the coming weeks and raise awareness for men’s health issues.

“Men’s health issues typically don’t get as much profile and men in general, statistics show they tend to not address things in a timely fashion

with themselves,” Milobar said.

“We seem to be raised with the belief that if we ignore it, it just won’t actually happen, or suck it up and just get on with it. That’s not a healthy way.”

Movember, which runs throughout the month of November, first started as a fundraiser to tackle prostate cancer.

Jeff Conners, a counsellor and men’s health advocate who convinced the two mayors to set up the bristly battle, said it’s expanded well beyond that scope to become one of the top funders for a variety of male health concerns.

“When they started looking at men’s health issues, mental health popped right up, so they said ‘we have to deal with that,’” Conners said, noting that while men are far less likely to be diagnosed with depression than women, they account of the majority of B.C.’s suicides.

“When we look at men’s health, we live less longer than women although we’re very socially privileged compared to women, and our last years are in poor health,” he said.

“About 95 per cent of workplace deaths are men. There are a lot of health issues that need to be raised for men and boys.”

Milobar isn’t the only city politician leaving the razor behind this month.

Coun. Arjun Singh is also trying his hand at a beard. Like Milobar, he doesn’t claim to be enjoying the endeavour.

“I haven’t grown a beard for five or six years and I remember why now,” Singh said. “It hurts. It’s itchy.”

Defence lawyers for a couple charged with weapons offences argued yesterday Mounties made so many errors in a raid on their home that guns and stolen electronics should not be allowed as evidence.

This week, defence and Crown lawyers will make final arguments in a special hearing to determine whether RCMP breached Jason and Sarah Robertson’s rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The couple together faces 18 criminal charges for possession of weapons and illegal property following a police raid of homes in Sahali, Westsyde and Batchelor Heights in May 2014.

Police believed Jason Robertson was selling large quantities of cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin and was linked to a Prince George gang known as The Crew.

Following the raid in May 2014, Kamloops RCMP Supt. Brad Mueller showed reporters 40

firearms, bags of marijuana and cocaine and what police alleged were thousands of dollars in stolen electronics.

They also seized $50,000 cash.

Drug charges were subsequently dropped by the Crown.

The defence entered as evidence extensive video surveillance of the RCMP’s raid. The couple installed a sophisticated system in every room in the house and police had no access to it.

“Videos don’t lie,” defence lawyer Julian van der Walle told Justice Jeanne Watchuk during his closing arguments.

The defence compared statements made by RCMP to what was seen in the video.

In one segment shown yesterday, defence lawyer Jeremy Jensen asked one of the Mounties involved in the raid, Cpl. Trent Johnson, whether police were authorized to make seizures on behalf of Canada Revenue Agency or for civil forfeiture.

“Under the authorization [search warrant],

it’s not specifically listed on there,” Johnson said of gathering evidence for civil action against the couple.

But in the video shown in court, Johnson can be heard asking another member whether a photo of the surveillance system “would be good for civil forfeiture.”

Police are allowed some errors in carrying out seizures and executing warrants, particularly when firearms are alleged. But the defence argues there are so many they add up to a serious breach of the couple’s Charter rights.

Those allegations include that police did not wait long enough before bashing down the door of the Sahali home; that many items, including fishing equipment, passports, luggage and even a silver bar, were seized when those items weren’t listed on the search warrant; that the scene wasn’t adequately supervised; and that police failed in their duty to allow Sarah Robertson opportunity to speak with a lawyer.

If the evidence is allowed, a trial date has been set aside in January.

Dangerous offender hearing ends A convicted killer the Crown wants locked up for an indefinite period would be more likely to receive “intensive psychiatric behaviour modification programming” if he were given a fixed sentence, a judge has been told.

Michael Tom’s dangerous offender hearing wrapped up yesterday with closing arguments from lawyers.

Tom, 39, has a lengthy and violent criminal record. The Crown applied in 2014 to have him labelled a dangerous offender — a tag that could result in an indefinite prison term.

Defence lawyer Ken Sommerfeld, however, is asking that Tom be given a sentence in the range of eight to 10 years, to be followed by a decade of supervision in the community.

Sommerfeld urged B.C. Supreme Court Justice Sheri Donegan to impose the sentence, in part because it would increase the likelihood Tom would receive behaviourmodification therapy while behind bars.

“It’s likelier to be available to him and likelier to be available to someone whose time in the penitentiary is finite,” Sommerfeld said, noting an indefinite incarceration would be

bad for Tom emotionally.

“Dangerous offender simpliciter [an indefinite prison term] brings with it an emotional component,” he said.

“It makes him think that he’ll be forgotten — that he’ll die in jail.”

Sommerfeld said a defined sentence would give Tom the hope he needs to be a contributing member of society once he is released.

“That will allow Mr. Tom to remain a person,” he said.

Tom’s most recent conviction, unlawful confinement, followed a violent confrontation with his thengirlfriend in the Lillooet area.

When Tom was 20, he killed his uncle and was convicted of manslaughter. Crown prosecutor Adrienne Murphy has referred to Tom as “a versatile” and “underprosecuted” offender.

At an earlier hearing, she filed a book of 28 police reports — some unprosecuted, some prosecuted and some partially prosecuted — to boost her claim that “shortcomings in Lillooet for the justice system” allowed Tom to continue his offending.

A date for Tom’s sentencing will be set on Nov. 28.

He remains in custody.

Kamloops’ first budget meeting of the year could be busier than in recent years, as residents backing an outdoor ice rink look to drum up support.

James Gordon, an organizer with the Kamloops Outdoor Ice Skating Association, said the group plans to take its pitch for a refrigerated outdoor rink to councillors at 7 p.m. tonight at Sandman Centre.

“We’re trying to get as many people as we can who support the idea to show,” Gordon said. ”We’ve got some pictures we want to show the councillors and just have some conversations with them.”

The group, also led by former councillor and Kamloops-South Thompson NDP candidate Nancy Bepple and former NHLer Steve Gainey, doesn’t have a concrete location pinned down. That would require help from the city, Gordon said, but the group wants it to be centrally located.

In 2014, parks staff asked council for $20,000 to conduct a feasibility study for an artificial ice rink, but councillors declined to fund the project.

“I just think there was not enough support,” Gordon said, noting he is hoping those interested in a rink can follow the lead of Kamloops’ pickleball and rugby players, who have successfully petitioned the city for new courts and other improvements.

So far, the group has hosted a ball hockey day at Riverside Park with Kamloops Blazers and Kamloops Storm players and has launched an email petition to city hall.

Gordon said city staffers are enthused about revisiting the plan, so it’s councillors who will still need to be convinced.

Twenty-nine data loggers will be placed in city vehicles for the next year, gathering information to help decide what types of vehicles the city should purchase in the future, whether electric,

Last year, the city’s first meetings brought out a handful of residents who were outnumbered by staffers and councillors.

Finance director Kathy Humphrey said she’s hoping residents will come to the meeting with a long-term view.

Humphrey said the city is looking for suggestions not just for this year’s budget, but for the next five so the city can plan with more consistency.

“We don’t want it to be a huge increase one year and then nothing, and then a huge increase,” she said. “We’d rather just plan for everything.”

Staff will also have updates on initial tax and utilities rates for 2017.

On the tax side, Humphrey said residents can expect “modest increases” to fund infrastructure work, wage increases for RCMP and firefighters, higher hydro rates and transit costs.

“Basically, a lot of the stuff that the city can’t control,” Humphrey said.

A Kamloops high-school student has been banned from having any contact with three family members after allegedly sexually touching a three-year-old cousin while babysitting her at church.

The boy, who is now 18 but was 17 at the time of the alleged incident, agreed to enter into a peace bond with conditions barring him from contacting his aunt, uncle and their three-year-old daughter.

Court heard the boy was looking after the toddler on March 20.

The boy later told his parents he touched her before pulling her pants up.

“He said he had an intention for a brief moment to take advantage of her,” Fras said.

“This was after the threeyear-old cousin disclosed it to her parents.”

Defence lawyer Brad Smith said his client regrets the incident.

“He described it as a

moment of impulse which was purely stupid and spur of the moment,” he said.

“There has been an immediate sense of taking responsibility from the getgo and through to today.”

In addition to having no contact with his relatives, the boy will also be banned from accessing pornography and visiting playgrounds, as well as being in the unsupervised company of anyone under 10.

The terms of the peace bond will last 12 months.

City finds millions in savings ANDREA KLASSEN

The City of Kamloops will have trimmed more than $2 million from its budget by speeding up and trimming the costs of its operations.

“Lots of these are really small things which would have necessarily come to council as a project,” finance director Kathy Humphrey said.

Monetary savings include $10,000 from renegotiating the city’s Telus contract, $15,000 in every city rink where the city has installed new ice-resurfacing technology and $290,000 in expected savings when the remainder of the bus fleet converts to natural gas in 2017.

Humphrey said the city has also found a number of time savings by bringing more of its billing and services online and is looking for ways to improve how staff are conducting day-to-day business.

CAO David Trawin said the savings mean the city’s operating budget in 2017 should be virtually flat from 2016, but noted there are additional costs in next year’s budget over 2016 “due to other things and contracts outside of our control.”

Trawin said staff time improvements mean requests for new employees have dropped compared to previous years, with only one part-time staffer on the wish list so far. New energy savings have also allowed the city to maintain the amount it’s paying as hydro rates rise.

Coun. Arjun Singh questioned if the city could look at a tax cut thanks to its trimming, but Mayor Peter Milobar said he expects the reality is a smaller tax hike rather than no increase.

“If you want to give people a tax drop, you have to find cost-efficiencies and then also find a way to reduce your service levels,” he said. “I think we have to be careful not just to lose sight of that.”

Murder prelim begins Two weeks of hearings for a 65-yearold Kamloops man facing a seconddegree murder charge have begun.

Gordon Camille’s preliminary inquiry got underway in Kamloops provincial court yesterday.

Camille was arrested and charged after Dennis Adolph’s lifeless body was found in a room at the 4 Seasons Motel in Valleyview on Jan. 26.

The nature of the relationship between Adolph, 49, and Camille has

not been made public.

Preliminary inquiries are hearings at which a judge decides whether there is enough evidence for an accused person to stand trial.

Evidence heard at preliminary inquiries is bound by a publication ban.

Camille has been in custody since his arrest in early February.

His preliminary inquiry is expected to conclude on Nov. 24.

Another last chance?

A Kamloops man who was given “one last chance” this past summer to turn his life around by a B.C. Supreme Court judge is back in custody, expected to plead guilty later this month to a breach charge.

Jimmy Rossetti was given a suspended sentence in August after pleading guilty to a string of charges stemming

from a violent crime spree that included break-and-enter and assault after he peppersprayed a homeowner.

The Crown wanted the 31-year-old to serve between seven and 11 months behind bars.

Instead, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Sewell ordered Rossetti to spend a year in a treatment facility to deal with his drug addiction.

“I’ve decided to give you one last chance to make something of your life,” Sewell said at the time.

That was on Aug. 26.

According to court documents, he breached his probation the following day and has been in custody since September.

Rossetti is slated to plead guilty to the breach charge in court this Thursday.

When he was sentenced, court heard Hobal’s blood-alcohol level was 0.089 at the time of the crash.

The charges Hobal was in court for yesterday stem from two separate incidents — one in May and the other last month.

On May 31, court heard, Hobal was spotted by police revving the engine of a vehicle loudly at 3:40 a.m. before pulling into a parking spot on St. Paul Street. He approached police, shirtless, and said he had just run out to buy cigarettes.

The officer ran his name and determined he was a prohibited driver. Hobal refused to provide an adequate breath sample when asked by the officer.

“Mr. Hobal got upset,” Crown prosecutor Andrew Duncan said.

“He jumped into the back of the patrol car stating, effectively, ‘Take me to jail.’”

Hobal was arrested and released.

On Oct. 9, a Kamloops Mountie spotted an SUV speeding on Battle Street and blowing through a stop sign at 4:15 a.m. The vehicle was eventually pulled over and Hobal was identified as the driver.

He refused to provide a breath sample and was arrested.

In addition to the jail term, Duncan also asked for a probation term barring Hobal from consuming alcohol and a $1,000 fine.

“One would think a conviction for dangerous driving causing death would be a wake-up call to any individual,” Duncan said.

“In these circumstances, it doesn’t appear to be for Mr. Hobal. He continues to drive and be under the influence of alcohol while he’s driving.”

Defence lawyer Don Campbell said Hobal suffers from crippling agoraphobia and anxiety and is enrolled in computer courses through the Academy of Learning.

“He essentially does his school work and stays home,” Campbell said. “That’s what he does.”

Campbell said Hobal would be kicked out of his school program if he was sent to jail and would be out a significant amount of tuition.

When asked if he had anything to say, Hobal launched into a rambling 10-minute talk.

“There’s absolutely no way I’ll ever touch a vehicle again,” he said.

“I know that now. In my mind, I didn’t grasp the potential consequences. I fully know now.

There’s no way I would drive a vehicle — period.”

It’s not the first time Hobal has been busted violating the driving ban he was placed on after killing Pengelly.

Last year, Hobal was jailed for 30 days and banned from driving for a further three years after being convicted on charges of driving while disqualified and failing to stop at an accident.

Father, musician killed by fentanyl

Last April, Tyler Laybolt was one of several local musicians to take part in a fundraiser for the Phoenix Centre.

A hip-hop artist who performed under the name Guck, he wanted to share his music and do some good with it as well, said his mom, Valdine Wilbur.

She knew he dabbled in recreational drugs now and then, Wilbur said, and they had talked about being safe. They talked about his music, something he was going to give up when his son was born.

They talked about following his passion.

Now, all Wilbur wants to talk about is fentanyl, the drug that killed her son in Kamloops on Nov. 6.

Like many of those who have died of overdoses from the drug — one the province’s medical officers of health has declared to be a medical emergency — he likely didn’t know the cocaine he was using was laced with it, Wilbur said.

She’s angry.

Her anger is directed at those who were with her 23-year-old son, the father of a four-year-old boy, when they were using the drug. It’s directed at them for leaving him there to die, she said.

stopped to help, had called for help, she might not be on the quest she now follows.

Wilbur wants people to know how dangerous any street drug is now that it appears much of it is laced with the deadly opioid, one that, as of Aug. 31 this year, had taken 302 lives, almost double the 152 who died in the entire 2015 year in B.C. “My big focus now is on making people aware,” Wilbur said as she headed back to her Edmonton home after coming to Kamloops.

She learned of her son’s death on Nov. 6 when a family dinner was interrupted by a phone call from her ex-husband — not Laybolt’s biological father, but the man who was dad to him — telling her of his death.

She also wants to complete his musical dream and Phil Roy is helping her with that.

Roy, who owns Hit ReCord Studio in

Kamloops, was expecting Laybolt to come in and work on the last of seven tracks that were destined for his album.

He didn’t show, but Roy wasn’t initially concerned because Laybolt wasn’t a morning person. He was the kind of guy who would suddenly show up in his sweat pants and a hoodie, still yawning, but ready to make some music.

They had been working together for the past few months.

“The first time I heard him, I thought ‘He’s got talent. He really does’,” Roy said.

Roy sent some demo recordings to The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada — commonly known as SOCAN — looking for feedback.

The reply he got, Roy said, was “‘this guy’s really talented.

I want to hear more from him.’”

of Mercury Artists had also heard some of Laybolt’s demos.

On learning of his death, Steffler wrote: “A few months ago I received a submission from a young Canadian rapper in his early 20s.

A natural talent with great flows, inspirational message . . . and the kid could sing! “. . . I knew from speaking with him and his family, what music and life meant to him.

His passing reminds me again about what is important in life . . . living and dreaming. It also reminds me that we live in a world where drugs continue to take too many of our children.”

Roy wants to complete Laybolt’s recording. Wilbur has suggested her son’s friend Ben Stevenson, who performs under the name Aphabetic.

They both want his music to be heard.

Laybolt asked for help, his mother said.

It’s why he had left Kamloops and moved to Alberta, taking a job in the oilfields near Lloydminster.

He was moving back and forth between the two cities to work and record.

“He said ‘Mom, don’t worry, I’m good to go,” Wilbur said. “And I told him just be careful.

“The worst thing is they’re lacing everything with fentanyl. I don’t understand it. It’s heartbreaking.”

LET THE 2017 CAMPAIGN BEGIN

T

he landscape for the campaign leading to the May 9, 2017, provincial election is rapidly being groomed.

In the two Kamloops ridings, all political parties but the Conservatives are ready, or almost set, with candidates ready to go.

The Greens have Donovan Cavers in the south and Dan Hines in the north.

The B.C. Communists have Peter Kerek in the north and Beat Klossner in the south.

The New Democrats have Nancy Bepple in the south and Barb Nederpel in the north.

The Liberals have incumbent MLA Todd Stone in the south and, this weekend, will hold a nomination meeting in the north that has created quite the buzz in political circles.

With Terry Lake not seeking re-election as MLA in Kamloops-North Thompson, a trio of well-known men are fighting for the right to carry the Grit banner.

North Shore Business Improvement Association executive director Steven Puhallo was first to declare, immediately after Lake made his long-expected announcement in early September.

Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar soon followed and Tobiano founder Mike Grenier then entered the race.

Barring any word from the silent Conservatives, who are again in a leadership void, the Liberal battle in Kamloops-North Thompson will be the only nomination race, with every other candidate in every other party arriving by acclamation.

Knocking off Stone will be a daunting task for Bepple, Cavers and Klossner, while Lake’s successor will inherit the luxury of stepping into comfortable incumbent shoes and all the support that comes with them.

After Saturday’s decision, Campaign 2017 will be fully underway.

Yes, Canadian culture exists

O

ur national fixation on the unlikely ascent of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency has taken Canadians back to a familiar place, where our southern neighbour’s business drowns out our own.

It’s been 45 years since Pierre Trudeau established the Metric Commission to convert this country to the world standard of scientific measurement and the job is nowhere near complete.

Two generations on, I’ve met few Canadians who know their own weight and height in kilograms and centimetres or could understand a police suspect description using metric measures.

Why? America won’t let us.

Their culture rules ours without even trying.

While Trump-mania and Trump-phobia fill Canadian news media, life here goes on quietly.

A gaggle of Conservative candidates held their first leadership debate amid the Trumpeting down south last week. I searched national media and there was basically one story reported: that nasty ex-cabinet minister Kellie Leitch is still talking about screening immigrants to Canada.

OMG, as the young people say. We have our very own racist demagogue.

This ambitious pediatric surgeon wants immigration candidates screened for “Canadian values,” a term that causes our city media to pounce.

Finally, a Trump angle!

Before you grab a torch and pitchfork, here’s a bit of background: Canada has one of the

VICTORIA highest immigration rates in the world. It increased under the Conservative government and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau aims to increase it some more.

That’s good, not just for cultural diversity, but for a population and economy that would be shrinking without it.

Currently, immigrants to Canada are screened for employment skills and given written tests of English or French proficiency.

Few are interviewed and certainly there is no systematic effort to determine if they favour throwing gay people off rooftops or treating women as livestock, to name two current immigration challenges.

Should we consider such screening? You’re not even allowed to bring that up in polite company.

It’s like questioning the extent and causes of climate change.

Shame on you.

In a December profile on Canada’s new prime minister, the New York Times Magazine recounted Trudeau’s thoughts on the country he now leads: “There is no core identity, no mainstream in Canada,”

Trudeau said. “There are shared values — openness, respect, compassion, willingness to work hard, to be there for each other, to search for equality and justice.

Those qualities are what make us the first post-national state.”

If there is no unique Canadian culture or identity, Canadian “values” can only consist of a generic niceness, as per Trudeau’s list.

We’re “post-national” now and that’s why we’re cool.

So forget about the Huron Carol, and Sudbury Saturday Night and Margaret Atwood and Leonard Cohen. Forget the art of Bill Reid, son of an American man and a Haida woman.

Forget Canada’s proud military history. We’re “peacekeepers” again, hall monitors to the world.

And whatever you do, don’t go trying to fashion some sort of “core identity” out of this oldstock Canadian stuff. That would be racist.

The younger Trudeau at least comes by this nonsense honestly.

It’s part of the DNA of the federal Liberal party, stemming from the elder Trudeau’s multiculturalism project.

Defending that project in 1995 was Sheila Finestone, multiculturalism and status of women minister in the Jean Chrétien government. “In my view, there isn’t any one Canadian identity,” Finestone said. “Canada has no national culture.”

NOT ENOUGH TO BE RIGHT — YOU HAVE TO WIN Editor: I have heard many people react to the U.S. election results with the lament, “What will we tell our daughters?”

Being a father, I haven’t had much soul searching in this regard.

Now that, according to my daughter Charlotte, “the man who is always on TV” has won, I know exactly what I’ll tell her.

I’ll tell her he didn’t win, but that the other side lost. And it wasn’t because their candidate was a woman or some other divisive excuse.

I’ll make sure she never allows herself to feel that way. I’ll tell her they lost because they failed to get out more than six-million votes their party got out in the last election. I’ll tell her the Democratic party candidate never even visited the state of Wisconsin and the hubris of such an oversight was at the heart of her loss.

I’ll make sure she sees through the excuses being made that Hillary lost because she was a woman or the other side was made up of 60-million racists desperate to maintain control of their country.

I’ll tell her if she wants to enter politics (and that she should), it won’t be enough to be right.

You have to win.

And no action should be taken that doesn’t further that goal until you have won.

I’ll tell her when they go low, don’t go high.

Get low, into the gutter and reach down to that person and lift them up, that the ignorant are ignorant because we failed to teach them.

That people hate because they are afraid and if you are right, change their mind.

Sell it to them.

Don’t demonize your enemies and never turn down a vote; there aren’t enough registered saints to vote you in.

I’ll tell her hubris is your only enemy; don’t plan a fireworks show until you’ve won.

I’ll tell her to craft her message not for those in the room who already agree with you, but for that guy in the stands at the football game, with nacho cheese on his fingertips and some idiotic T-shirt. Because if you can inspire that person to positive action, the day will be yours.

And to think you can’t is the worst kind of cynicism.

I’ll tell her it is not a winning strategy to make excuses and that, in her life, she will encounter misogyny and bigotry and all manner of ignorance. She’ll find that most human disorder comes from a wounded place.

I’ll tell her it’s not enough to be right.

She has to win.

We will see how this turns out.

However, Americans don’t fool around with politicians if they don’t like what they are doing — they assassinate them.

They have a track record of past presidents eliminated.

With Donald Trump, no reins are on this horse. However, with Hillary Clinton, big business held the reins, driving her whereever they wanted.

CP WON’T BEND ON NOV. 11 TO RESPECT THE DEAD Editor: As usual, I attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at Riverside Park.

The event was marred as usual by CP Rail, which contrived to have

two trains cross in the middle of the ceremony to remember Canadians who died for us.

Not only were the speeches and prayers drowned out by the noise of moving trains, but the

engineers saw fit to blow their klaxons.

By chance, I ran into MLA Todd Stone shortly afterwards and vented my feelings to him.

He revealed our municipal, provincial and federal

representatives have tried for years to prevent this, but CP will not bend from the pursuit of profit to respect our dead.

Mathematics lessons also inspire confidence From A1

Tiegane said he is succeeding “because of the way she explains it,” and from all the help everyone gets from McCormack as she works through the basics of mathematics.

“Grade 7 was hard,” Tiegane said. “But she makes it understandable.”

Those teaching skills and the dedication she puts into her classes are some of the reasons McCormack received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the British Columbia Association of Mathematics.

She’s not the first in School District 73 to receive the award. In past years, Brad Epp, Thor Fridriksson, Linda Dontramont and Sandy

Baird were honoured by the association for their teaching.

The criteria for the award includes showing evidence of significant positive impact on students, staff and parents, initiating innovative and effective programs in their classrooms, making contributions to mathematics education at various levels and demonstrating excellence Gail Seppala is a certified education assistant in McCormack’s classroom. She sums up McCormack’s success with the simple observation that “she doesn’t let them hide.”

Last September, McCormack said, about half the students in the class didn’t know what odd and even numbers

were. Now they know what a hypotenuse is and understand prime numbers.

They’ve learned not only the concepts, but the language of mathematics.

McCormack has passion for the subject, something Fridriksson said is important and which Epp added doesn’t apply only to math.

“You don’t even have to say math,” Epp said. “What makes a good teacher?”

It requires an engagement with the subject and the students, staying up to date, always learning and understanding students learn in different ways.

For Fridriksson, it includes more than just

a passion to teach.

“We all concentrated on asking questions or presenting problems that really made our students think. We all had a knack for encouraging deep thought. It became really rewarding to see our students understand the math and to demonstrate their intelligence in meaningful ways.”

Keegan Leblanc is in Tiegane’s class.

He said he finds it easier to learn math because McCormack “works slower so we can understand more.

“She teaches you how to do it and you keep doing it until you understand.”

Every day starts the same way.

Students come into class and immediately work on eight questions on one

of the whiteboards.

They also use smaller whiteboards, something McCormack said she started using years ago. It saves paper, gives them a chance to wipe out any mistakes and works well with the kids.

The questions always reinforce not just concepts taught yesterday, but those explained months ago, all to keep reinforcing the knowledge students already have received.

And they know if they don’t know the answer to one question, skip it and move on to the ones they do know.

“They’re not becoming mathematicians,” McCormack said. “They are here because, guess what?

You suck at math.”

Conversely, in her

honours math classes — which have wait lists and for which acceptance is based on having marks to show a deep understanding — she will have pupils believing they are ‘A’ students.

“Hmm, maybe not,” McCormack said. “I push them because they need to move forward, too.”

Czarina Choy is in one of the Grade 9 honours classes McCormack teaches.

She said she likes it because, unlike daily math, the level is fastpaced.

Both classes have something in common — there is no homework.

McCormack makes sure students are always working on math during class and gives them time to complete it so

they don’t have to do it after school.

She is also incorporating the new provincial curriculum being introduced in schools this year. Rather than just teach proportions, she had the honours class create something to show they understood the concept. It led to replicas of a giant pop can, a pencil, even a sandwich, all created to scale — and bigger.

Her students don’t just learn math, McCormack said.

“Their confidence grows. They come in here with a purpose.

There is huge growth.”

For Matthew Ciardullo, however, who is also in the honours class, his success is easy to explain.

“I love math — and she makes it so much more fun.”

Housing starts in British Columbia’s urban areas were trending at 37,772 units in October compared to 40,996 units in September, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

The trend is a six-month moving average of the monthly seasonally adjusted annual rates (SAAR) of housing starts.

“British Columbia housing starts trended lower in October with the slowdown in apartment construction contributing to most of this decline,” said Robyn Adamache, CMHC’s principal market analyst.

“This said, the trend measure of housing starts remains well above the five year average level.”

TORONTO — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau began a daylong pitch yesterday to some of the world’s most powerful institutional investors, urging them to invest in Canada — specifically in infrastructure.

Trudeau’s first brief meeting was with Ontario financial representatives at a swank downtown Toronto hotel where he talked about a $180-billion investment opportunity.

“Canada has a made very strong commitment to be investing in infrastructure over the next 12 years,’’ Trudeau told the group representing Canadian pension funds and financial institutions.

“We need to make sure that the investments we’re making are going to bring Canada in the right direction and done as efficiently as possible.”

He talked about leveraging private capital to make taxpayer dollars “go even further’’ — the aim being to put the country in the global vanguard when it comes to transit, green and other types of infrastructure.

“These are the things that we know are going to be a key part of Canada’s growth.’’

But in Ottawa, New Democrats vowed to fight “every step of the way’’ what they called Trudeau’s scheme to privatize public infrastructure.

NDP finance critic Guy Caron said private investors would wind up controlling about 80 per cent of roads, bridges, hospitals and other infrastructure built through Trudeau’s proposed infrastructure bank, designed to leverage $4-$5 in private dollars for every $1 invested by the federal government.

Those companies will want a return on their investment of as much as seven to nine per cent, which Caron said will only be realized by forcing Canadians to pay tolls and user fees and will wind up costing taxpayers more than twice as much.

“They won’t do it out of the goodness of their hearts; they will want a return,’’ Caron told a news conference.

“There’s not 1,000 ways to do it. It’s through tolls and it’s through user fees.’’

Trudeau never mentioned privatization during last year’s election campaign, he added.

“The Trudeau Liberals were supposed to be for the middle class, they

were supposed to be for the little guy.

“They are now showing their true colours, that of the party of wealthy private investors.’’

Others on hand for Monday’s meeting included top executives from the other big banks, insurance company giants such as Manulife and Sun Life, the country’s largest pension funds and asset management firms.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi also attended, as did their transport and natural resource colleagues.

Trudeau and many members of his cabinet were also to attend a second meeting later yesterday with two dozen representatives of large international pools of capital worth as much as $21 trillion.

Those at the table were expected to include representatives of central banks, sovereign wealth funds, insurers and pension funds.

The investors’ summit comes just two weeks after Morneau announced plans to launch an infrastructure bank next year, into which the government has promised to pump $35 billion over the coming decade.

In addition to the infrastructure bank, the government also intends to create a new Invest in Canada Hub for attracting foreign investment and relax some restrictions on investment from outside the country.

The summit is being hosted by the federal government but BlackRock Inc., the world’s largest asset manager, organized the event.

BlackRock’s legendary founder, Laurence Fink, was expected to be among the participants.

No specific projects have yet been identified for funding from the bank but Trudeau, Morneau and Sohi were expected to tell potential investors that toll bridges, energy grids and water systems could all be

Caron noted Morneau’s economic growth advisory council championed the infrastructure bank idea and at least three of its members — BlackRock’s Mark Wiseman, Dominic Barton, global managing partner of McKinsey and Company, and Michael Sabia, president of Quebec’s powerful pension fund manager, the Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec — are all in the business of finding good investments with big returns.

Their companies stand to make “hundreds of millions, maybe even billions out of the returns of this scheme,’’ Caron said.

“I’d like to ask you, is our moral compass so distorted that we don’t even care that people can be appointed into powerful government committees and stand to gain from their advice?’’

CREEMORE, Ont. — Federal Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch says she has been the victim of an apparent break-in attempt at her home in Creemore, Ont. In a statement Sunday night, Leitch says she was notified by a volunteer in her riding association that someone was purporting to know her address and was offering it up online to anyone who she says was “interested in doing me harm.”

Leitch, who has said she shares some ideas on immigration with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump, says the “threatening activity” was reported to Ontario provincial police on Friday night.

Police will also need more funding to learn how to recognize and investigate drugimpaired drivers, says the CAA. The Liberal government has promised to introduce legislation legalizing recreational marijuana next spring and a committee report on the process is expected at the end this month.

The CAA helped fund a study by the Ottawabased Traffic Injury Research Foundation that suggests legalization will pose “incredible challenges” for managing pot-impaired drivers.

The study is sure to inflame the escalating propaganda war over marijuana’s harms and benefits, because it is premised on the assumption that access to legal cannabis will increase traffic accidents.

The CAA commissioned a poll that found almost two thirds of respondents are worried roads will become more dangerous after legalization.

“There needs to be significant resources devoted to educating the public in the run-up to, and after, marijuana is legalized.’’

A Conservative senator has introduced legislation that would give police the power to obtain oral swabs or blood samples from drivers to detect THC, the active intoxicant in cannabis.

But pot activist Jodie Emery says the presence of THC can be detected up to a month after use and doesn’t indicate impairment.

“Of course I’m against impaired driving, but impairment is proven by performance,” Emery said in an interview.

“Police already have all the tools they need to detect impaired drivers on the road.”

The CAA-funded study notes there is a lack of good research data on what it calls the “magnitude of the rela-

The automobile association release refers to the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, which in turn has cited a 2012 meta study of other research that concluded “Acute cannabis consumption nearly doubles the risk of a collision resulting in serious injury or death.”

However a 2015 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — which the U.S. government agency called “the most precisely controlled study of its kind yet conducted’’ — found that marijuana smokers had only a minimally higher risk of being involved in a traffic accident than sober drivers.

The 20-month-long survey of more than 10,000 Virginia Beach, California, drivers found there was no “significant increased risk of crash involvement” from cannabis use.

The largest population-based study, involving nine European Union countries in 2010, also found the traffic accident risk from pot impairment was “not statistically significant.’’

“Drivers positive for THC were estimated to be at elevated risk (one to three times that of sober drivers),’’ said an NHTSA review of the research, while the same study found alcohol-impaired drivers had elevated crash risks of between 20 and 200 times that of sober drivers.

That’s not to say the risk is zero.

“Performance deficits (for drivers) have been found in tracking, reaction time, visual function, concentration, short-term memory, and divided attention,’’ says the 2012 research cited by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse.

But even though recreational marijuana is self-evidently an impairing substance, many Canadian youth aren’t getting the message.

The CAAcommissioned poll of 2,102 Canadians, conducted by Earnscliffe Strategy Group, found 26 per cent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 34 “believe a driver is the same or better on the road under the influence of marijuana.”

The online poll claims a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points, 19 times in 20, although the Market Research and Intelligence Association rules say online panels should not include error margins.

As the traffic foundation study observes: “the pervasive messages from pro-cannabis groups have made it more challenging for road safety messages to be heard.’’

A random sample of British Columbia drivers in 2013 found that 5.5 per cent tested positive for cannabis.

And Health Canada reports that its 2012 Canadian Alcohol and Drug Use Monitoring Survey found that 2.6 per cent of drivers in Canada admitted driving within two hours of using cannabis at least once in the previous 12 months.

Cannabis has a halflife of about two hours in the human body, which further complicates police efforts to accurately measure drivers’ THC levels in a timely fashion.

“To conclude, cannabis-impaired driving is complex and it will require a continuum of road safety strategies to complement the new legislative changes to cannabis regulation,’’ states the Traffic Injury Research Foundation report.

Cjs Nightclub was once decorated with bullhorns, cougars — you name it — a place where reallife cowboys visited on weekends from throughout the region to toss back Texas Teas mixed by bartenders in cowboy vests.

These days, flame-

“It’s sad that it’s no longer that, but again, you just kind of move with the times,” Tammy said.

A former Mountie turned businessman, Roy Baron founded the old western watering hole, which began its life as Jack Daniel’s. The name, often shortened to JD’s, lasted about six or seven years before

the Tennessee distillery sent a letter advising the name be changed due to copyright infringement, thus conceiving Cactus Jack’s Saloon.

Located in an old multi-storey building on Seymour Street — now the Rex Hall — Wednesday nights became popular and two-step lessons taught cowboys and

left-feet alike to keep up with the quickfooted rhythm of country music. The bar also became known for bull-riding nights and rodeo sponsorships.

Those days, however, are long gone.

If the old Cactus Jack’s was a country bar, today’s Cjs — shortened because, like JD’s, everyone just called it that anyway — is a much more diverse nightclub and concert venue.

“We’re trying to bring in acts that appeal to a broader spectrum,” said general manager Chuck Ferguson. “So, rather than being specifically country or

specifically rock and roll, we are bringing in people like Coleman Hell, we’re trying to do a reggae night.”

Cjs moved from that historic location on Seymour Street in 2009 after Roy got fed up during a landlord dispute. Just down the road, Fifth Avenue offered a venue at triple the capacity, paving the way for mid-sized acts.

That was the better part of a decade ago, a transition that was tricky to start and ultimately redefined the bar to what it is today.

Many people have come and gone from Cjs over the years: Geoff Smith, who went

on to own the since shuttered Thirsty Dog (now Red Collar), Teri Willey, now part-owner of the Blue Grotto — too many to name.

Roy died in 2013, a loss felt not only by the Barons, but also throughout the community.

Cjs, however, remained in the family.

Roy’s son and retired NHLer Murray Baron and wife Tammy help run the bar and Roy’s wife Joyce still attends the odd show at age 75.

“She drinks tequila more and better than anyone I know,” Murray said with a laugh.

Retirement Planning Risks

Many fail to plan beyond their 80s. The table confirms that half of Canadians will live past 83 and a prudent financial planner would never want half of their clients to run out of money. Furthermore, in 2016 the FPSC updated their forecasting as Canadians are living longer. According to their probability of survival table, it suggests a couple aged 50 today should plan for a life expectancy of age 93.

For many aspects of life, a good plan is the solid foundation to achieving success. Retirement planning is no different. Accordingly to the Financial Planning Standards Council of Canada (FPSC), 85% of Canadians who have engaged in comprehensive financial planning report feeling better off. Since 1999, we have had the privilege of helping clients enjoy the retirement they have envisioned. During this time, we have noticed some retirement planning risks:

Poor Returns in Early Years Most retirement projections are based on consistent or smooth returns; however, this is not realistic. One must plan and "stress test" for adverse conditions and build a contingency. As an example, an individual retiring in July 2008 just before the financial crisis would have had poor timing. If they began drawing their portfolio after the market dropped 50% this could severely impact their lifestyle. As such, we recommend that at least three years of funds be set aside to provide cash flow.

Why three years? Historically, when a bear market occurs (drop over 20%), it has taken up to three years for a full recovery.

Longevity Risk Because people are living longer, retirement portfolios must as well. The Canadian Institute of Actuaries recently projected the following: 50% Chance live to

Wrong Return Assumption Using long-term historical averages in planning has generally been advisable. However, the past is not likely a great predictor of the future because interest rates have dropped significantly and global economies are expected to grow slowly. Take a 5-year GIC for example: According to Morningstar®, the average return since 1950 has been 6.2%. Today, it is hard to find a 5-year GIC near 2.0%. As a result, we need to be more conservative in our forecasts, which typically mean investors will need to save more to maintain the same lifestyle.

Pre-tax versus After-tax Income Taxes are one’s largest expense over their lives. Given all the credits and income splitting opportunities for Canadians, many retirees pay little income tax. Statistics Canada last reported the median family income in 2010 was $76,000 which costs $14,837 in Federal and BC taxes for a net income of $61,163. A retired 65 year old BC couple earning $38,000 each would only pay $7,662 total in taxes. This analysis was done simply using employment income, and pension income. The results for retirees can further improve when certain tax credits, such as medical expenses, are factored in.

Incorrect Tax Assumptions Many financial planning programs assume a constant rate of tax throughout retirement. This should be adjusted and calculated to factor in age, income splitting, pension, tax credits, et cetera. Using the wrong tax rate is one of the most significant errors a planner can make and can greatly affect the accuracy of a retirement plan.

Invisible Tax An often overlooked risk is inflation, which erodes purchasing power. Using the Bank of Canada website inflation calculator, over the last 30-years (1986-2016) inflation averaged 2.25% or more importantly, a $100 basket of goods in 1986 would now cost $195! It is imperative that your retirement income keeps up to the ever-increasing cost of living.

These are just some of the common risks to be aware of and discuss with your advisor when drawing up a retirement plan.

“I think he’s [Roy] looking down going . . . ” Tammy said.

“What are they doing?” Murray interrupted.

“No!” Tammy said with a laugh. “What have they done to my bar?! No, I think he’s loving the fact that his son is getting involved in it.”

While they laugh at the thought of Roy seeing the place now, the reality is demand for a country bar in Kamloops isn’t what it used to be, say the Barons.

Ferguson ran the door at the old and new venue for years and has since taken over management duties.

On the front lines, he’s seen it all — but his lips are sealed.

“You could write a book,” Tammy said.

“But don’t!”

Ferguson succeeded Rob Medves in management. Medves worked at the bar for almost a decade before passing suddenly almost two years ago — one of the hardest times in the bar’s history.

“It was tough for the staff. It was tough for us,” Tammy said. “It was such a shock.

The nature of operating for 30 years in a smaller market means longtime staff become

connected and recognize faces of patrons in the community. That social environment carries through, with staff and patrons both commended for keeping the bar alive all these years.

“We’re actually getting to that point where there’s secondgeneration patrons,” Ferguson said. “Their parents partied here and now they are.”

New regulars cycle in every couple of years or so and, when drinks are flowing and the lights are down, cupid has been known to drop by the club.

Tammy noted a local massage therapist who met her husband at the bar.

“There’s been a handful of people who said we met at Cjs,” she said.

On Nov. 25, the club will celebrate its anniversary with a performance by Prism, a band that was touring and performing when the club first opened and one with a local connection, being that the group’s former lead singer, Henry Small, lives in Kamloops.

A plaque will also be unveiled on a wall in the lounge in memory of Roy. While Tammy will likely apologize more than once for putting the plaque on a wall that dons no bullhorns, the Barons are open to bringing back country, if one day it’s what the people want.

“I’m hoping that

every year is different and that maybe country will turn around and we’ll get more of the young people wanting to hear the country,” Tammy said.

Live music earns club kudos

While country is no longer the main focus of Cjs Nightclub, live country acts got it nominated for the British Columbia Country Music

Association awards for venue of the year.

The awards were held in Vancouver in late October.

“We lost out to the Roxy [in Vancouver], but that’s OK,” Tammy said.

The live music is something Tammy is particularly proud of, having moved the stage from the opposite corner of the room, opening it up on the east side of the building and adding tables

and seating to create a lounge atmosphere at the back where pool tables once were.

Outsourced sound services and a new stage have received kudos from performers.

Showtimes also changed, performances bumped up earlier so those who come out on a weeknight won’t be out all night. VIP areas with comfortable seating allow events like birthday and bach-

elorette parties to book the space, which has its own bar, but the hope is to hold more fundraiser events in the future, as well.

“Kind of just trying to make it welcoming to all of the ages,” Tammy said.

their long-term vision for Cjs is similar to their direction today.

“I want live acts,” Tammy said. “That would be my dream.”

Tammy said youngsters prefer DJs to live bands, but it’s just not the same as a group creating sounds together and telling stories between songs.

WHEN “One song runs into the other and yet we’ll fill the place,” Tammy said.

Operation Christmas Child ends this week The 2016 Operation Christmas Child shoebox campaign is nearing the end.

Last year, volunteers collected more than 2,500 boxes and have set a goal of 3,000 this year.

Operation Christmas Child Kamloops sees residents fill shoe boxes with toys, school supplies and other items. The shoeboxes are then delivered by volunteers to children around the world.

Past destinations have included Haiti, Costa Rica and various countries in Africa.

The Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society opened the city’s first supportive housing facility last year and is looking to continue growing the program.

The fifth annual Homes for Hearts gala, happening Thursday evening, will support the initiative that offers longterm transitional housing for women and children.

The fundraiser was introduced four years ago to get the program off the ground.

Through the success of the event, which has to date raised more than $50,000, it’s now operating.

The goal is to offer programming that meets the needs of residents, from addictions support and mental-health services to help accessing the food bank or continuing education. An onsite social worker connects them to a network of services.

“In terms of accessing housing, we have a ginormous waitlist,” King said. “The need is huge.”

Last spring, a fire in the building destroyed two of the units. The suites are being renovated, King said.

bby Spratt’s hands have never held her back. In fact, they have set her apart.

The freshman, who has started all six matches for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack this season, won the job as the club’s go-to setter coming out of exhibition play and, through the first quarter of the season, shows no signs of turning it over.

And while it might seem remarkable for an 18-year-old to be running the offence of a university club in her freshman year, even more impressive is her ascension to the ranks of Canada West sport.

Diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis as a toddler, Spratt has had to leap more than the usual hurdles on her road to elite athletics.

“I think about that every day, how some kids unfortunately feel the pain of arthritis. Same with seniors,” Spratt told KTW. “Me, playing volleyball at this level and not having any pain, wow, I really lucked out.”

Spratt was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at two years old. Her mother, who has rheumatoid arthritis herself, noticed the signs in her daughter — troubles getting up and sitting down, crying when her wrists were touched.

A quick diagnosis enabled Spratt to get immediate treatment. Two years later, as a four-year-old, she began taking Enbrel, a biopharmaceutical that now has her arthritis in remission.

She lives most days pain-free, though she can sometimes feel her joints starting to get warm or stiff — classic symptoms of the illness. For the most part, aside from the weekly injections she has to give herself, life feels normal.

Perhaps it’s because she has so little pain, but Spratt said she doesn’t think of herself as an arthritis patient. Maybe it’s because she has never been sidelined by what, for some, can be a debilitating condition.

“I don’t think of myself as a girl with

arthritis until I look at my fingers,” she said. Spratt has been setting since Grade 8, then already playing on the senior girls’ team.

“I just think, OK, I’m playing volleyball

and I have arthritis. This is great. Just keep doing it.”

While she hasn’t let the arthritis stop her from setting, it has affected her hands.

Spratt said a few of her joints, especially

those in her pinkie fingers, were fused when she was a child. The condition is starting to progress to all of her digits.

It hasn’t impacted her play. Spratt leads the Canada West in assists (215) and is fourth in the conference in assists per set (8.96), trailing Alessandra Gentile of the UBC Thunderbirds, Nikki Cornwall of the Trinity Western Spartans and Mariah Walsh of the Alberta Pandas. All three are fourth-year setters.

“For a first-year girl, [she] was excellent,” WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm said of Spratt following the WolfPack’s first weekend of the regular season.

“As a setter and having a condition such as arthritis, to me that’s a pretty big obstacle to overcome. Lots of people with that condition don’t have high function of their joints and in your hands, obviously, there are lots of joints. For her to be able to overuse that part of her body every day is pretty impressive.”

Spratt knows she has the ability to inspire others with her story, especially those who are diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis as kids.

She was asked to be a spokesperson for the condition before moving to Kamloops from Calgary and has talked with kids about what her life looks like.

“I think I almost gave them a little hope, like, ‘OK, this might not be so bad,’” Spratt said.

“It feels really good knowing that I could change kids’ lives.”

Spratt and the WolfPack, who split a pair of matches against the Mount Royal Cougars of Calgary in Kamloops on the weekend, will be back in action this weekend at the TCC. TRU and UBC will square off at 6 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The WolfPack are 3-3 on the season, while the T-Birds are 4-0.

Kamloops Long Blades sharp on the road Members of the Kamloops Long Blades had strong finishes on the weekend, racing in speedskating competitions in Abbotsford and Edmonton.

Four Long Blades were at the Edmonton fall classic, attendance at which is required to advance to the season-ending CanWest Championship.

Leah Turner set four personal bests and won a silver medal in the 800-m race and bronze in the 1,500-m in her age category.

Teagan Lawhead had three personal bests and Isaiah Jessie Uribe and Cameron Thomas each had two personal bests.

Meanwhile, two Long Blades attended their first meet outside of the Okanagan region at the annual Fraser Valley Challenge in Abbotsford.

Kayleigh Roberts and Jared Roberts skated strong in each of their races, combining for eight personalbest times.

Will NHLers play at 2018 Olympics?

TORONTO — The NHL hopes to inch closer to a decision on the 2018 Olympics later this week.

League officials will meet tomorrow with the International Ice Hockey Federation in New York.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the NHL hopes to learn if any traction has been made between the IIHF and the International Olympic Committee with regard to potential sticking points for participation at the Games in South Korea.

No decision with regard to the NHL’s position is expected.

But the league hopes to learn if the IOC has budged at all with respect to money issues currently clouding the process. The IOC is resisting covering out-ofpocket payments it took care of at the past five Olympics.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said those costs were upwards of US $10 million.

That, as well as the complete shutdown of the NHL season for two-plus weeks, could be a

bridge too far for the league.

“I can’t imagine the NHL owners are willing to pay for the privilege of shutting down for 17 days,’’ Bettman told attendees of the Prime Time Sports Management Conference in Toronto yesterday morning. “I just don’t see that.’’

Daly said he had no reason to think that the IOC’s position had changed. If that’s the case, the NHL and NHL players’ association will have to jointly determine whether to proceed with participation in a sixth consecutive Games.

Bettman said a decision would need to be made by early January at the latest. He couldn’t foresee it drifting into the spring.

The NHL needs to know whether its 2017-2018 schedule will include an Olympic break. It’s currently in the early stages of crafting that schedule.

The IOC has covered the outof-pocket costs it’s now resisting since the NHL began participating in the Games in 1998. Failure to do so again, Bettman hinted, could be a deal-breaker for the league’s owners. Bettman also took aim at the restrictive poli-

cies of the IOC with regard to the Olympics.

“We’re not allowed to be associated with the Olympics. We’re not allowed to promote that we’re there. We’re not allowed to use the trademarks and logos.

We’re not allowed to use the footage,’’ he said. “The IOC says this is the way we’re going to do it. We’re not going to pay. You can’t do this. You can’t do that. It doesn’t give you the warm and fuzzies.’’

NHL and NHLPA officials recently visited the Olympic site in Pyeongchang, believing it to be suitable for international competition. They saw that limited accommodations in the city could pose some issues.

The GM meetings today, meanwhile, will include some discussion about the place of blindside hits in the NHL. The item boiled into a topic of some public intensity after Maple Leafs centre Nazem Kadri faced no supplementary discipline for a hit on Canucks winger Daniel Sedin.

Blindside hits are only illegal if the head is the principle point of contact.

Walter died peacefully at his home in Kamloops following a courageous eight year struggle with Parkinsons disease.

Walter was born in Cumberland, BC, the only child of Olav and Bessie Neros. He grew up in Royston and graduated from Courtenay High School.

In 1959 he began a career with the B.C. Forest Service which took him too many locations all over the province. He retired in Salmon Arm in 1994.

Walter was a confident, skilled, unhurried and patient person. He liked working with wood, gardening, a good card game, hunting and trap shooting but his favourite pastime was fishing.

He enjoyed camping as long as it was beside a fishing lake and liked to visit family and friends.

Walter requested that there be no formal service.

If you wish a donation can be made to a charity of your choice or you might simply remember him with a walk in the forest that he loved.

Greg was born July 21st, 1945 in Victoria, BC and moved to Prince George in 1950, where his love of sports, and the outdoors, thrived.

Lana passed away on October 5, 2016 at the age of 49.

After Greg retired, he and Cindy moved to Powell River in 2007 to continue the adventure and enjoy life by the ocean. In 2013 they moved to Sorrento, BC and spent winters enjoying time in Arizona.

Lana is survived by her mother Eileen Winston and her sister Natasha of Kamloops, her sister Pamela of Rimouski, Quebec and brother Daniel of Keremeos and many nieces and nephews.

‘Deuce’ was truly ‘Greg’arious and made many friends in whatever activity or adventure he participated in! He loved his family and friends dearly, and will be truly missed by us all.

She is predeceased by her brother Tony and father Paul.

Celebration of life to be held late spring in Prince George and will be announced at a later date.

Lana loved children and dogs. She was happiest when cooking and entertaining for family and friends.

Greg spent most of his working years at CN Rail but he truly just worked to play and have fun. There is nothing he loved more in life than playing and spending time with family and friends!

Gregory John Frey passed away at his home in Sorrento, BC at the age of 71 on November 5th, 2016. He was a true fighter and showed his strength, bravery and dignity until his passing.

He was predeceased by his father John Frey and his mother Bertha Frey. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife Cindy; brother Chris; daughter Dana, Shane; son Curt, Tai and grandchildren Meila and Griffin; stepson James, Jess and grandchildren Cody and Thea; and stepson Jason, Amy and grandchildren Carter and Kayla; as well as numerous other close family and friends.
