British Columbia’s unionized teachers have won a long-standing battle with the provincial government over the right to bargain class sizes in a ruling Thursday from the Supreme Court of Canada.

The court delivered a verbal decision in favour of the teachers by a vote of 7-2.

The court said it will release a written judgment within 48 hours of its decision.

The decision overturns a B.C. Court of Appeal ruling that found the province did not violate teachers’ rights to bargain class sizes and the number of special-needs children in each class in their contracts.

Under then-education minister Christy Clark, the province first imposed legislation that removed teachers’ ability to bargain class size and composition in 2002. After a B.C. Supreme Court judge deemed the law unconstitutional in 2011, the province imposed a new law the following year.

Similar to the previous legislation, it restricted school boards’ power to determine staffing levels and establish the size and composition of classes or how many teacher assistants can be hired per student in a school.

The move led to a labour dispute in 2014.

A B.C. Supreme Court judge ruled the legislation unconstitutional but the appeal court overturned that decision a year later. Four of five appeal court justices found the province consulted meaningfully with teachers and the legislation didn’t violate the charter.

Kamloops-Thompson Teachers’ Association president David Komljenovic said he was still in a state of disbelief after learning the highest court in the country had brought an end to the years-long fight between the B.C. government and its teachers.

It remains to be seen what impact the ruling has on the lower court order to the government to pay a $2 million fine to the B.C. Teachers Federation (BCTF).

BCTF president Glenn Hansman said the decision could cost the Clark government as much as $300 million a year.

The existing contract, ratified in 2014 for a six-year-period has language, backed by grievance rulings.

It provides a guideline on how the return to that language will be implemented.

He said since the ability to bargain size and composition was stripped, more than 3,000 teachers lost their jobs, about 1,600 of them speciality teachers.

Komljenovic said the decision means anywhere from 100 to 200 more teachers will be needed in School District 73 to meet the size and composition rules in place in 2002.

He could not estimate the number of speciality teachers and certified education assistants (formerly known as student support workers) who would be required.

Harper speculated taxes will have to increase.

School district superintendent Alison Sidow said a 2014 report prepared, based on the assumption the BCTF fight would win the day, estimated up to 20 more portables would be required at a cost of about $1.3 million.

About 29 elementary teachers would need to be hired at a cost of $2.5 million. About 23 secondary teachers would need to be hired at a cost of $1.9 million for a total of just under $6 million. At least $4.5 million of that would be an ongoing cost.

The report, prepared by former superintendent Karl deBruijn, did not estimate the numbers or cost of specialty teachers and certified educational assistants.

Sidow said it’s possible schools now closed might have to be reopened to accommodate smaller class sizes. She expressed concern about a return to no more than three children in a classroom on an individual education plan who require additional supports.

“What do we do if a fourth comes to that school, to that class? What happens?” Sidow asked.

“And what happens when you diagnose a student mid-year? Do we have to put them in another school?”

She noted the dollars and staffing estimates in 2014 were also made at a time of decreasing enrolment, a trend that appears to have ended.

This year, a majority of schools in Kamloops have more students than they were built to accommodate and some have had to add portables to handle bursting enrolment.

A crew of about 70 have transformed Tranquille Farm Fresh into a movie set as filming of Beautiful Voice continues into early December. Details of the movie shoot are scant, but it is known the set has been made to appear as though the scenes are in the Middle East and that a casting call last month at Sahali Mall called for people of all ages, with a Middle Eastern or Mediterranean look, along with Indian, Hispanic, African, native and mixed ethnicities. One of the feature film’s stars is actor Neel Sethi from The Jungle Book. The movie is being directed by Paul Ziller and produced by Jason Shepherd and Bill Marks.

Two inmates found dead at Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre were determined to have died of natural causes, while the RCMP continues to investigate a third fatality.

Daryl Belseck was found dead in his cell at Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre in January 2015.

Barbara McLintock, a spokeswoman for the B.C. Coroner’s Service, confirmed Belseck, 52, died of natural causes due to long standing cardiac disease.

Belseck had a lengthy criminal history, with assault, breach of probation, mischief under $5,000, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and assaulting a peace officer among the charges that brought him before courts in Kelowna and Penticton.

McLintock said that inmate, whom she declined to name, also appears to have died from natural causes.

That file remains open, but no change to the finding is expected.

The death of 20-year-old Dylan Levi Judd, however, remains outstanding.

The coroners service had set a date in November 2015 for an inquest, but it was cancelled and the file transferred to RCMP. Judd was facing charges out of Sicamous of being unlawfully in dwelling house and possession of stolen property.

He was awaiting completion of his bail hearing while in custody.

McLintock said RCMP continues investigation into the death of the Ontario man.

The BC Coroners Service makes decisions on whether to call a public inquest, commonly done when inmates die of something other than natural causes, at the end of investigations.

Thompson-Nicola Regional District representatives re-elected John Ranta as the chair of its board of directors yesterday afternoon, voting the 25-year mayor of Cache Creek in for his third-consecutive term.

Ranta, Area B (Thompson Headwaters) director Willow MacDonald and Area M (Beautiful Nicola Valley-North) director Randy Murray were also nominated.

The vote required two ballots, with none of the directors achieving a majority after the first ballot. Per TNRD policy, the director achieving the fewest votes, in this case MacDonald, was dropped from that ballot and a second vote between Ranta and Murray was held.

Ranta achieved a majority of the 25 eligible voters on the second ballot.

“I pledge to you to do my very best to work with each and every one of you to fulfill the hopes and dreams and desires of your constituents, wherever you live,” Ranta said.

“Let’s work together to make this region even better.”

Ranta was unchallenged in 2015, winning by acclamation.

He has served as chair of the TNRD numerous times throughout his tenure on the board, first taking the position in the late 1990s.

He served another term in

the early 2000s.

In his speech to the board before the vote, Ranta said a priority for his term would be continuing to improve relations with First Nations groups.

Following the vote for chair, the board elected its vice-chair, with incumbent vice-chair Ronaye Elliott of Area J (Copper Desert Country), Area I (Blue Sky Country) director Steven Rice and Kamloops Coun. Marg Spina receiving nominations.

Rice was elected on the second ballot.

Again, a majority was not received on the first ballot, with Elliot removed for the second round of voting.

“I do my best and I shoot straight from the heart,” Rice said.

“I’ll continue to do that.”

Ranta was nominated for chair by Clinton Mayor Jim Rivett, while Rice was nominated for vice-chair by Clearwater Mayor John Harwood.

A former NHL enforcer who last year was sentenced to 45 days in jail after pleading guilty to a string of criminal charges is back in court.

Rudy Poeschek is facing a new count of breach of probation, accused of missing

meetings with his probation officer in July and August.

The 49-year-old was late for his first appearance in Kamloops provincial court yesterday.

Outside court, Poeschek told KTW his memory is failing him.

He said he forgot to meet with his probation officer and almost forgot to show up for court.

In a series published in KTW in 2015, a Boston-based neurosurgeon suggested Poeschek may be suffering from CTE — a chronic brain disease found to have afflicted many former hockey and football players.

Robert Cantu described CTE as being similar to Alzheimer’s disease.

“It’s essentially

caused by rattling your brain around in your head — a lot,” he said.

Poeschek was a tough guy in the NHL over parts of 12 seasons.

He was selected by the New York Rangers in the 12th round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft while playing junior hockey in his hometown of Kamloops.

Poeschek is due back in court on Dec. 1.

Kamloops RCMP arrested a suspect Wednesday following a collision from which the driver of a stolen car ran from the wreckage.

Const. Jodi Shelkie said police were called just after 9 a.m. to a report of a collision between a car and truck at the intersection of Summit Drive and Notre Dame Drive in Sahali.

A witness told police the driver of the car, which rammed

into the back of the truck, left the scene running. Police determined the car was stolen in Kamloops on Nov. 6.

Shelkie said police found the fleeing suspect on nearby Thor Drive. He is from Kamloops and known to police.

Mounties are recommending a Criminal Code charge of possession of stolen property, as well as Motor Vehicle Act charges, against the 36-year-old man.

Watson might have won on Jeopardy!, but it could not have predicted the microphone would die three times yesterday during a presentation about the supercomputer.

Maybe if it had reviewed all the documentation about microphone usage and battery lives at Thompson Rivers University, it might have been able to anticipate the glitches.

Speaker Caroline Ong, analytics and cognitive leader at IBM Canada’s global business services, said it just showed that while the world of artificial intelligence (AI) is expanding exponentially, “batteries still matter.”

Ong was the first to present in the annual technology and innovation speaker series at the university, one offered in partnership with the B.C. Lottery Corporation.

She outlined some of the business uses Watson can provide in a variety of sectors.

Named for IBM’s first CEO, Thomas J. Watson, it is designed to think like a human, but is capable of reviewing more information faster than any human could.

For example, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Watson has been trained by doctors on what to look for as it reviews journals, textbooks and any other data on breast, lung, colon and rectal cancers.

“It’s not replacing doctors,” Ong said. “It’s given them access to information they can’t possibly read in a lifetime.”

One doctor at the cancer centre was skeptical of the ability of artificial intelligence and tested it, asking for a treatment plan for a specific situation for which a treatment wasn’t readily identifiable.

The system’s response after reviewing the information, analyzing it and applying it to the question was this reply: “See? I came up with this and I had not ever heard of it.”

Watson had found an obscure study of which the doctor was unaware, one he used to develop a valid treatment plan.

The Hilton Hotel group is using Watson technology to cre-

ate Connie, a robotic concierge that can answer questions connected to the location of the best Italian restaurant near the hotel where it is located and how to get more towels.

“It understands what people are looking for and answers them,” Ong said, noting the Toronto Raptors of the NBA uses Watson technology in player training.

Before, the room used by the team would have had post-it notes and other pieces of paper on the walls; now the Raptors use smart boards. More importantly, through having each player write a 3,000 word essay, Watson has been able to do personality profiles — who is aggressive, assertive and confident, for example — on each Raptor that coaches can use to determine the best way to communicate with them.

Ong spoke yesterday to a room full of business and computer-science students and teachers. The goal was to show how artificial intelligence can transform almost any industry, not by replacing workers, but by improving their expertise.

It has been 98 years since the First World War ended and 71 years since guns fell silent in the Second World War. We have had many wars since and they continue today.

Kevin McConnachie, a national representative for the union now serving as administrator of the local chapter, told KTW he expects to be in charge here for several months taking care of “procedural matters.”

Bringing in a national rep to run the union local seems like a major decision to address what McConnachie insists is not a serious issue.

A Trump presidency will have plenty of upside

T

uesday’s U.S. presidential election was certainly draining, the surprising result bringing many to tears — of fear, not joy.

A Donald Trump presidency is considered by some to be the precursor to the arrival of those four guys on horses, but I tend to adopt the great Avett Brothers’ view of our place among the various leaders.

As the Americana band from North Carolina sang on its landmark hit Head Full of Doubt: “When nothing is owed or deserved or expected, “And your life doesn’t change by the man that’s elected, “If you’re loved by someone, you’re never rejected, “Decide what to be and go be it.”

I generally adopt a glassempty-broken-and-beyondrepair outlook on life.

However, with so many people I know in personal crisis, panicking at the thought of the next four years, I figured it was my civic duty to find a glass-half-full view of life under President Donald J. Trump.

Sure, he may be a racist, sexist, misogynistic xenophobe with a penchant for groping women and stiffing contractors.

But there is a bright side to having our American cousins elect a bonafide reality star

• Students in schools across the land of the free and home of the brave will welcome the expected change in grammar and spelling rules by presidential decree. The new standards will result in a yuge difference in test results. Student grades will increase bigly.

• As the U.S. dollar drops a bit lower each time Trump speaks, Vegas will be a more affordable option for Canadians. That Trump’s ascension to power coin-

cides with the gambling capital of the world getting an NHL team further confirms the election result was pre-ordained — perhaps by Clarence Campbell.

• NASA, the Mayo Clinic and other prestigious institutions will be flooded with applications from people with no experience in seeking the job they desire, thereby boosting the general optimism of an entire nation.

• Trump’s ambitious southern border project will introduce a new generation to a certain Pink Floyd album and, hopefully, get the kids to spend less time with the autotuned dreck that plagues commercial radio and more time with the genius of Rogers Waters.

• Canada — and, in particular, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — will look that much better when the world compares the two countries side by side.

• Living in D.C. will expose a more understanding Trump to the hurt caused by the racist nickname of the city’s NFL team. He will buy the club from Dan Snyder and, in keeping with naming his possessions after himself, the Washington Redskins will be reborn as the Washington Orangefaces. Three Thompson Rivers University students are headed to Ottawa this weekend to promote the university’s Study Abroad ambassador program with innovators in international education.

Madison Ellis, Aaren Richie-Bonar and Tatiana Gilbert will present at the 50th-annual Canadian Bureau for International Education Conference, endorsing studentled initiatives that encourage other students to take advantage of exchange programs.

They were selected to present an hour-long session on “leveraging the student experience” and a two-minute video they produced during their time as ambassadors for TRU Study Abroad after returning from various countries.

All three studied overseas in 2014 and 2015: Gilbert spent two semesters in Australia, RichieBonar studied for one semester

in Belize and Ellis lived in France for one semester.

Each expressed their desire to explore other countries without putting their degree on hold, even amidst apprehension about what direction they wanted to take with their education.

“It was a great way to incorporate school and travelling and it’s a completely different experience than just travelling solo,” Richi-Bonar said.

Gilbert said they want other students to have the same opportunity they did and aimed to capture the inspiration of travel in their production.

“Really, the biggest takeaway we wanted people to get from it was just a motivational video where you get goosebumps at the end of it, where you say, ‘Wow I want to go do that,’” she said.

The Canadian Bureau for International Education is a non-profit organization that promotes study abroad exchanges, scholarships and internships for students in kindergarten to university. It also promotes the

interests of international students studying in Canada.

According to the Bureau, 97 per cent of Canadian universities offer education abroad, but only 3.1 per cent of full-time undergraduate students study abroad annually.

“We really want to give people the takeaway message that student-led initiatives can really benefit universities and their study abroad programs,” Richi-Bonar said. “This going out semester, we have the highest number of students studying abroad and the study abroad manager is saying it has a lot to do with the ambassadors.”

The trio will be accompanied by the cinematographer who filmed the promotional video, Japneet Singh. Co-presenting the hour-long session are program manager Karie Russell and Lian Dumouchel from the B.C. Council for International Education.

Kaitlyn O’Toole knows about the role harm reduction can play in the world of substance abuse.

She’s been involved in it at music festivals, explaining to attendees the negative consequences that could flow from using drugs.

It’s why she’s studying social work at Thompson Rivers University and one of the reasons why she and five others in the program are putting on a workshop that focuses on education and fun with the goal to teach youth about the specific danger of fentanyl.

The project is required for her program.

Students are put into groups and connected with other resources in the community.

Her group was linked with Dave Manuel and the T’Kemlups Indian Band. The result of their work together is Become Your

Own Superhero, which happens on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the Chief Louis Centre dining hall from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

It’s built around the concept of the medicine wheel and its role in health and healing for the First Nations.

The evening will have four concurrent workshops of 15 minutes each focused on mental, physical, emotional and spiritual themes brought to the basic message that fentanyl is causing so many overdose deaths that the province’s medical officer of health, Dr. Perry Kendall, has declared it a health crisis.

O’Toole said the messages being brought to the participants will address the fact some young people will still use drugs.

In the physical portion, the youth will learn what an overdose can look like and how to use a naloxone kit to stop an overdose long enough for medical help to arrive.

The spiritual component will address what it means to be healthy.

The mental part will look at resources and self-care.

The emotional segment, O’Tool said, “is designed to bring it home for them.”

The evening will be light and will include games, pizza and door prizes.

There are only 60 seats available and registration is required, although the event is free to attend. Registration can be done by emailing dave.manuel@kib.ca or by calling 250-372-5030.

O’Toole said the process has been an educational one for the group.

For her, working with the band has helped her learn about processes and protocols followed there, information she said is important to discover before they start their careers.

When it’s done, the group has to submit a lengthy paper on what was learned.

Trump presidency doesn’t change need for Canadian carbon price, Trudeau says THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is suggesting it’s full steam ahead for his government’s environmental plan — including a national carbon price — despite a Donald Trump presidency that could recast America’s climate-change priorities.

Trudeau said Canadians and the world understand failing to fight climate change has a big economic downside and he is defending carbon pricing as a means of fostering innovation and improving the economy.

Since coming to power a year ago, Trudeau’s Liberal government has been in lock-step with the climate agenda of U.S. President Barack Obama.

Obama and Trudeau jointly

announced major reductions in methane emissions last March during a state dinner at the White House and later joined forces with Mexico on a broader North American climate and clean energy strategy.

But the new president-elect has suggested climate change is a hoax, wants America out of the Paris climate accord and plans to promote the exploration and development of fossil fuels, including coal.

Trudeau announced last month that he would impose a national floor price on carbon dioxide emissions starting in 2018 and rising to $50 per tonne by 2022.

“One of the things people in Canada and indeed around the world understand is that there is tremendous economic disad-

vantage from not acting in the fight against climate change; for not pushing towards cleaner jobs and reducing emissions; towards not showing leadership at time where the world is looking for leadership,’’ the prime minister said yesterday in Sydney, N.S. “We know that putting a price on carbon pollution is a way to improve our response to economic challenges, to create good jobs going forward and to show leadership that quite frankly the entire world is looking for, along with the solutions that go with it.’’

Trudeau’s congratulatory press release Wednesday said the prime minister looked forward to working with the new Trump administration on a number of joint policy areas, but neglected to cite the environment.

Law prof says U.S. marijuana votes could bolster Canadian legalization THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA — Canada’s effort to craft a legalized marijuana regime could be boosted by the move of four more U.S. states to approve recreational use of the drug, says a Halifax law professor.

As it designs a new system, the Liberal government must address the fact Canada is a signatory to three international conventions that require criminalization of the production and possession of cannabis.

ers in California, Massachusetts and Nevada should give Canada more ammunition in the court of global legal opinion, said Archie Kaiser, a professor in the schools of law and medicine at Dalhousie University.

At last count, Maine voters were also leaning in favour of the idea, but it was still too close to call yesterday.

“It seems that Canada may be part of an emerging consensus,’’ Kaiser said.

The strength in numbers could make it easier for Canada argue that legalization is the

Amber Alert called off after police find body of seven-year-old girl NIPAWIN, Sask. — RCMP in Saskatchewan say they have found the body of a missing seven-year-old girl who had been the subject of an Amber Alert.

The alert was issued by police in Nipawin overnight after Nia Eastman was not returned to her mother.

Police said Nia’s father, Adam Jay Eastman, was found dead earlier in the day from self-inflicted injuries.

Officers found the girl’s body in a home in Choiceland, a small community not far from Nipawin, where residents say the father rented a home.

RCMP Insp. Jennifer Ebert struggled to maintain composure as she broke news of the girl’s death to reporters.

“All of us had hoped and prayed Nia would be located safely,’’ she said, choking back tears. “This was not the outcome any of us were hoping for and our thoughts are with her family and the communities.’’

Ebert said investigators were trying to piece together what happened after Nia’s father picked her up from school on Wednesday.

“Our investigators are working

diligently to determine exactly what took place,’’ Ebert said. “At this point in the investigation, there is no indication anyone else was involved in Nia’s death and we are not seeking any suspects.’’

A Facebook page belonging to a Jay Eastman features several photos of a little girl smiling happily with her father. People who knew Eastman say he went by his middle name “Jay.’’ On Tuesday afternoon, a day before Nia was to be returned to her mother, there was a photo posted of the girl and an unidentified woman with the super-imposed caption “My World.’’

On Wednesday, the page’s cover photo was changed to a picture of a skull and crossbones with the slogan: “Leave me alone. I’ve had enough.’’

There were no further posts after that.

A business owner in Choiceland said Eastman had been renting a house there and dropped in to talk to her pretty much every day.

The woman, who did not want her name used, said Eastman and his wife had separated about two months ago.

SYDNEY, N.S. — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has officially reopened a Veteran Affairs office in Sydney, N.S. The former Veteran Affairs office in the Cape Breton city was closed as a cost-saving measure under the Harper government, along with several others across the country.

In Sydney, protests were held to try to convince the Conservatives to reconsider the closure and the

Liberals promised to reverse it if they took power.

At a ceremony in Sydney yesterday morning, the prime minister promised all the country’s veterans offices will be properly staffed, and wait times will be lowered.

Ottawa said the new office will employ 15 staff who will serve approximately 2,200 veterans of the Canadian military.

Later yesterday, Trudeau met with veterans at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128 in Sydney.

Will Trump tear up the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico and repudiate the TransPacific Partnership (a free-trade deal linking most Pacific Rim countries except China) and the proposed TransAtlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (a similar deal between the U.S. and the European Union)?

Yes, yes and yes.

Destroying the current “globalized” trading arrangements was a key part of his platform.

Will he impose import duties on goods made in America’s trading partners in an attempt to “bring the jobs home”, including 35 per cent tariffs on Mexican-made goods and 45 per cent on Chinese exports?

If he does, he’ll be starting a global trade war and, in the case of China, a confrontation that could even involve the military.

How could almost half of American voters (47.5 per cent) support all this? Well, they didn’t, actually. They weren’t interested in the details.

They just hated the way the country was changing.

Many of them had lost out economically because of the changes and they were all very angry. It was driven by the same rage that fuelled the Brexit vote in

Those scapegoats are popular mainly because you can imagine doing something to solve the problem: close the doors to immigrants and rip up the free trade deals.

ot many things are certain in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, but FBI Director James Comey can rest assured his job is safe.

His prediction of a new investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails 11 days before the election (followed by a retraction only 36 hours before the vote) gave Trump the edge he needed to win in the close-run contests in battleground states.

Another sure bet is that Trump will not waste his time trying to send Clinton to jail, despite his many promises to “lock her up.”

But this brings us rapidly to the nub of the matter: how many of his promises does he really intend to keep? If he keeps them all, we are in for a wild ride in the next four years.

President Barack Obama, addressing his last rally before the election, said: “All that progress [we made] goes down the drain if we don’t win tomorrow.”

So down it goes: the promising climatechange deal signed in Paris last December, the Affordable Care Act that gave 20-million poorer Americans access to health insurance, the deal that persuaded Iran to stop working on nuclear weapons and, perhaps, the whole 68-year-old NATO alliance.

Trump is not just going to tear up the Paris climate accord, for example. At home, he’s going to dismantle all but a few “little tidbits” of the Environmental Protection Agency and, he says, revive the coal industry.

He’s not just going to restart a confrontation with Iran.

He has talked about closer co-operation with Russia in the fight against Islamic State — which, given Russia’s support for the Assad regime, might even give the government a decisive victory in the Syrian civil war.

antalizing on paper doesn’t always mean successful on ice.

The Kamloops Blazers’ line of centre Garrett Pilon between left-winger Rudolfs Balcers and right-winger Deven Sideroff was formed prior to a game against the Swift Current Broncos on Oct. 19 at Sandman Centre.

It looked great on the whiteboard in the scouts’ room prior to puck-drop — three NHL Draft picks, each of them high-end skill players with excellent speed — but all the flash in the world can’t buy chemistry.

After 10 games, it appears they

complement each other just fine.

Pilon, 18, Balcers, 19, and Sideroff, 19, have combined for 36 points and a plus-24 rating during their stint together.

“Sid is probably the fastest guy in the league and Pilon, when he puts the skill and speed together, he’s unstoppable,” said Balcers, a 19-year-old Latvian import.

“We’re getting to pucks fast and using our speed to make some plays. I hope the coach is not going to change our line.”

Smart money is on Blazers’ bench boss Don Hay keeping the unit together tonight against the Prince Albert Raiders at Sandman Centre. Game time is 5 p.m.

Balcers came to Canada looking to ink a contract with the San Jose Sharks, who drafted him 142nd overall in Round 5 of the 2015 NHL Draft.

He has 19 points, 10 of them goals, in 20 games this season, with seven goals and 13 points coming in the last 10 games.

“If we keep playing the way we are and keep building our chemistry, I feel like we could be a top line in this league,” said Sideroff, who signed with the Anaheim Ducks in August.

The line stole the show at the Blazers’ most-recent home game, combining for nine points in a 5-2 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers last Friday.

“At times, we want to do too much, but Don, he wants us to keep it simple,” said Pilon, the Saskatoon product who was nabbed 87th overall by the Washington Capitals at this year’s NHL Draft.

“With that in the back of our minds, we keep things simple, to a point, and that’s

one of the reasons why we’re having success.”

Pilon, still searching for his goal-scoring touch, has two goals and 13 points in 18 games this season, with nine of those points coming in the last 10 games.

Sideroff’s 10 goals leave him tied with Balcers for the team lead in that category.

Seven of the Summerland speedster’s markers have come since the line formed.

There doesn’t seem to be any clever monikers for the trio floating around. That is sure to change if they keep going at this pace.

“When you come to a new team, you hope to find some guys to get chemistry with,” Balcers said. “There are still a lot of things to work on, but it looks like I’ve found those guys.”

The 2016 season hasn’t worked out quite like Carmin Mazzotta had planned.

The head coach of the Thompson Rivers WolfPack’s crosscountry running team, Mazzotta embarked on his second season at the helm of the program with the goal of sending full contingents to the 2016 U Sports Cross Country Championships at the University of Laval.

But the reality of the season quickly set in. The travel to Quebec City, coupled with a host of hurdles — academic ineligibility, injuries, personal issues — has ended with the Pack deciding to send only one male and one female runner to the race tomorrow in Quebec City.

“For us right now, if we had a host of athletes that were ready to run and be in the top 50 at nationals, we’d take more,” Mazzotta told KTW. “But really, right now, we’ve only got a few athletes — the program’s still growing — that are at that level.”

Last year, the Wolves sent five runners — three men and two women — to nationals in Guelph, Ont. This season, two of those racers — Conlan Sprickerhoff and Rachel Lobay — will again don the WolfPack black and orange.

Lobay finished the six-kilometre in the 2015 championship in 22 minutes and 45.8 seconds, 63rd among women and seventh among rookie runners.

“She ran out of her head to place that high,” Mazzotta said of Lobay, who has had a stronger, healthier campaign in 2016. She could finish as high as top 50.

“She is such a fighter and a competitor.

She just puts herself out there in each race and just battles for every spot.”

Sprickerhoff, meanwhile, was 141st in the men’s 10-kilometre in

2015, crossing the line in a time of 35:39.3.

Speaking to KTW on Wednesday, the Williams Lake native said he’s heading to his fourth national championship — third at the university level — with a new level of confidence.

“I think, from that experience, trying not to get too focused on who I’m running against and more run my own race,” Sprickerhoff said, reflecting on 2015. He’s aiming to finish with a 33-minute time in Quebec City.

“Last year, I had not as good of a race as I wanted to and I think I got a little bit in over my head. This year I’m a little bit more relaxed, more calm and, honestly, more prepared to run against those higher runners.”

Mazzotta expects the WolfPack’s program to continue to make gains in the coming years. Kamloops boasts a strong cross-county running community both at the elementary and adult levels and Thompson Rivers has been involved in helping to grow the sport in high schools around the city.

Last weekend, Kamloops had two schools — South Kamloops secondary and Westsyde secondary — send teams to the B.C. High School Cross-Country Championships in West Kelowna and a runner finish second in the junior boys’ division at the event.

“I’m confident. Our group is growing in size. We have a deeper group,” Mazzotta said.

“I fully anticipate next year, when nationals are in Victoria, I’d like to bring seven guys and seven women.”

Seahawks’ D struggling TIM BOOTH

RENTON, Wash. — Just as the Seattle Seahawks are evolving offensively and appearing to find success, they have another problem emerging.

In the last few weeks, Seattle can’t get off the field on defence.

And it’s not the best time to be struggling on that side of the ball.

On a short week, the Seahawks will face Tom Brady in New England on Sunday night.

In the past two weeks, Seattle has started to display signs that maybe the wear of its overtime tie with Arizona on Oct. 23 is starting to impact its defence.

Combined with an offence that seems to be abandoning its attempt at running the ball and controlling time of possession, the Seahawks defence has been asked to be on the field for an inordinate amount of time lately.

“We’re playing a little bit more ball, but at the same time, I think we’re doing some good things,’’ Seattle defensive end Cliff Avril said.

not an issue and Seattle coach Pete Carroll is almost defiant that the amount of time the defence has spent on the field is a benefit, the statistics are telling a different story.

And the biggest indicator is on third downs.

“We’ve had 13 third-and-2 or less in the last two weeks. That’s really hard to win like you would like to on third down,’’ Carroll said. “We have to play better ball on earlier downs and then we have to get off when we have our chances.”

Over the past three weeks — games against Arizona, New Orleans and Buffalo — the Seahawks have allowed 31 of 53 third downs to be converted, a conversion rate of 58.4 per cent.

Buffalo was 12 of 17 against Seattle on Monday night and had 30 first downs, tied for the seventh-most ever against the Seahawks in the regular season.

The inability to get off the field on third down, combined with the Seahawks struggling to

run the ball and sustain drives, has led to three straight teams with 36 or more minutes of possession against the Seahawks.

Arizona got it started when it dominated possession in the 6-6 overtime tie. The Cardinals held the ball for 46:21 and ran 90 offensive plays. New Orleans followed up a week later with 72 plays and 36 minutes of possession and on Monday night, Buffalo ran 82 offensive plays and held the ball for 40 minutes.

It’s a recipe for exhaustion, even if Carroll doesn’t view it that way.

“I think we’re getting stronger,’’ he said. “If we’ve endured it, I think we’re in pretty good shape. If we can get a game of 60 or 70 plays, it’s going to seem like a lark. We’ll see if we can change it a little bit.’’

The timing of the struggles on defence is troubling because the Seahawks appear to be morphing offensively and potentially exposing their defenders to even more time on the field.

“We have a lot of improvement to make and we’re just going to keep banging away at it,’’ Carroll said. “We know where we’re going, we’re just not quite getting on that track yet.’’

Overnight on Sunday November 6th, suspects broke into a vehicle on the North Shore and stole items from the vehicle.

Among personal items taken, the victim had inadvertently left her engagement ring in the car. The ring is described as a gold ring with two bands of small diamonds and one large solitary diamond on top.

Although it is unlikely the suspects were looking for the ring, they will steal anything that may look like it could of value.

Commercial businesses and others who buy gold or rings will be aware of who is selling the property. If you are caught with stolen jewelry you could be charge with possession of stolen property.

Please remove any valuables from your vehicle as you do not want to become a victim to thieves. If you have any information on this theft, please contact Crime Stoppers. You will never have to go to court or given a statement.

UNUSUAL THEFT This is a different theft that took place sometime over night on Wednesday October 26th at a concrete company on the North Shore.

The items taken were three different styles of concrete “Gargoyles”, these are not only unusual items but weigh approximately 180 pounds each. The suspects cut through a chain link fence to remove the items. Due to the weight, it is likely there would have been more than one person involved

in this theft.

A vehicle would have been needed to move the items to a different location. It is possible that the Gargoyles will be on display in someone’s yard or in somone house.

If you have any information on this theft or know there whereabouts of these items please contact Crime Stoppers. You will receive a cash reward upon the arrest of these suspects or recovery these items.

Patrick Rawlings was admittedly overwhelmed by emotion when his son Matteo stood in for his first fight at the 2016 World Karate and Kickboxing Commission (WKC) World Championships in Dublin, Ireland, last week.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say I got a little teary-eyed,” Patrick told KTW from Calgary, as the family was making its return to Kamloops.

“You see everything going on with the Olympics, you see that and you don’t really capture how emotional that moment is. Seeing him compete on this world platform, the secondlargest kickboxing organization in the world . . . it was a great experience.”

Matteo, who is six months past his 11th birthday, captured a bronze medal in continuous sparring on his first trip to kickboxing worlds. He was one of 10 fighters in his division.

He was also named to Team Canada for the team sparring after arriving in Ireland, an event in which he had never competed. He helped the Maple Leaf to bronze for his second medal of the week.

“At the start I was kind of nervous, but as soon as I started fighting, I began to shake it off and do what I always do,” Matteo said.

“I went over there thinking I had a pretty good chance of coming home with a medal. I’m just happy I’m

actually coming home with an actual medal from the championships.”

Matteo is a successful multi-sport athlete, who trains in taekwondo, kickboxing and boxing and has previously won medals on provincial, national and world stages.

He won a bronze medal at the World Martial Arts Games in 2014, just six months after first being introduced to taekwondo.

His progression has been incredible, but the Rawlingses went to Ireland with the aim of seeing just how talented their son is.

They got their answer when Matteo won his first two fights of the single-elimination tournament, defeating fighters from Ireland and England.

“We were hoping he’d come home with something, but we weren’t expecting it,” Patrick said. Matteo lost his third fight against another Irish fighter, finishing in third place.

“So, for him to come home with two is pretty cool.”

Matteo said he will be focusing on his boxing in the coming months, an area he said “has always been a problem for me.”

Already, he has turned his attention to the 2017 WKC World Championships in Orlando, Fla. “He has already said he’s going to Orlando next year to compete again with the same circuit,” Patrick said with a laugh.

“He wants a rematch.”

THEFT OF RV An RV trailer was taken on Monday October 31st from a private residence in the Valleyview area. The RV trailer is a Skyline Koala Ecocamp, bumper pull style, 21 feet in length, white, brown and beige in colour.

The serial numbers have been recorded by the police and will remain on the police and ICBC’s

computer system until the RV is recovered.

Someone may have seen a pickup truck moving the RV trailer and may have thought this was unusual incident for this time of year.

The best way to stop this type of theft from occurring is to do a little crime prevention; place a good

quality lock on the trailer hitch or even remove a wheel from the RV unit.

SURREY — When the television cameras are switched off, a different Wally Buono emerges.

More at ease, the coach with the most wins in CFL history — and counting — will sometimes sit down with reporters in his office at the B.C. Lions’ practice facility to field questions, discuss strategy and even get out from behind his desk to diagram plays on a whiteboard to prove a point.

Every so often, Buono will take off his glasses and get almost playfully annoyed at a query, but it seems like on some level he enjoys it all — the backand-forth, the strategizing, the football banter.

The 66-year-old has had almost all the right answers in 2016 for the Lions, stepping back onto the sidelines to lead the resurgent club to a 12-6 regular season ahead of Sunday’s West Division semifinal at B.C. Place Stadium against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“I had no expectation,’’ Buono said this week. “In training camp, you could see certain things that were very optimistic, very positive. You could see the speed and the athleticism on defence.

“I felt coming out of training camp that we had a very athletic, very good team. They had to grow, which they did.’’

Citing fatigue and a desire to focus on his front-office duties, Buono retired from coaching after guiding the Lions to a victory in the 2011 Grey Cup, but the itch to teach and motivate remained.

As B.C.’s general manager and vice-president of football operations — two titles he still holds — Buono would often hang around practice during the coaching tenures of protege Mike Benevides and successor Jeff Tedford.

And when Tedford left following a solitary 7-11 campaign that culminated in the Lions’ fourth straight one-and-done playoff appearance, Buono kept a promise to owner David Braley that he would return to coach the team if there were no other viable options.

“The whole atmosphere has just been different,’’ said wide receiver Bryan Burnham, in his third CFL season. “Wally commands a different level of respect than other coaches. The way he treats his players, he’s always 100 per cent honest.’’

An inductee into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2014, Buono entered his 23rd season as a head coach with 254 wins. He added a dozen more to that total with an old-school

approach that has been tweaked for the modern athlete.

“The two main principles I feel like he brought back to our team were accountability and discipline,’’ said veteran defensive back Ryan Phillips, in his 12th season with the Lions. “We went through our growing pains, but now guys are buying in and we’re seeing results.’’

One example of the new Buono, who coached 13 years in Calgary before joining B.C. in 2003, is allowing music during certain portions of practice and often ending sessions early if he’s happy with the work that’s been done.

It’s a kinder, gentler Buono.

But if things aren’t going as planned, players can expect a blunt assessment.

“He doesn’t sugarcoat anything. He doesn’t care about your feelings,’’ said running back Jeremiah Johnson, who signed with this Lions in the off-season.

“You want coaches to shoot things straight. You don’t want to be guessing.’’

A five time-time Grey Cup winner as a coach, Buono put his faith in quarterback Jonathon Jennings this season, sticking with the second-year man despite some ups and downs.

Jennings repaid that belief by putting up more than 5,200 yards passing and 27 touchdowns in leading B.C. to second in the West and the club’s first home playoff game since 2012. “[Buono’s] encouraged an environment of competition,’’

said Jennings, whose team is on a three-game winning streak heading into Sunday. “Every coach expects to win, but something he instilled in us from the beginning was that we’ve got to come in here and compete every single day.’’

Apart from Jennings’ emergence, B.C.’s offence has been the benefactor of breakout seasons from Emmanuel Arceneaux and Burnham — two receivers Buono also stuck with — a solid ground game and a healthy and more mature offensive line.

Meanwhile, the defence withstood three key injuries in the secondary and tied for the league lead in sacks with 52.

“You look at our roster, it’s not drastically different from a year ago,’’ said Lions backup quarterback Travis Lulay, who has played for Buono on both sides of his coaching retirement. “We were the youngest team in the league a year ago, so we’ve grown up a bit, but a big part of that is Wally’s mindset and high expectations.

“That was a message early on: ‘We’re going to win, so either you get up to speed to the level we need you at on the field or we’ll win with other guys.’’’

It’s one formula the old-school coach has carried throughout his career and into 2016.

“I don’t care who you are,’’ Buono said during one of his office chats with the media. “If you’re a superstar and you’re not giving me what I want, I’ll sit your ass.’’

In dentistry an ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure; dental disease can easily be prevented but cannot be reversed.

To prevent dental disease you want to see a dentist before you experience any pain.

Many oral health problems don’t have noticeable signs or symptoms in the early stages. You may think you are fine until you experience pain. At this point you may have more complex issues and require more care.

Early detection of oral disease through a regular exam by a dentist can help to stop or slow the progression of oral disease and lead to better outcomes. It’s an important step in preventing disease.

Myth: It doesn’t matter what I do, one day I’ll lose my teeth.

While it’s true that your mouth ages too, more adults are keeping their natural teeth for a lifetime. This can bring great benefits to the quality of your life, enabling you to continue to eat the foods you love, and feel better overall. Celebrating life’s spiritual priorities

A

time-management expert carefully placed a dozen fist-sized rocks in a widemouthed glass jar and asked his audience of business professionals: “Is the jar full?”

“Yes,” they replied.

“Really?” he replied as he poured a pail full of gravel into the jar. As he shook the container, the gravel found spaces to lodge themselves.

“Is the jar full now?” he quizzed them.

Having caught on, they answered, “Probably not.”

“Good!” he replied. He brought out a bucket of sand and poured a handful into the jar. The sand went into the space left between the rocks and the gravel.

Once more he asked the question: “Is the jar full?”

“No!” the class barked.

Again he said, “Good!” He then poured a mug of water to fill the jar to the brim.

“What’s the lesson in this illustration?”

Someone immediately blurted the obvious: “No matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard, you can always fit some more things into it.”

“No,” the speaker replied.

“That’s not the point. This illustration teaches us that if you don’t put the big rocks in first, you’ll never get them in at all.”

That insight also holds true for our spiritual life. Life’s big rocks must first be in place in our life so the little rocks can find their rightful lodging.

After trusting in Christ as Lord, we now possess divine presence and power to prioritize, plan and place the rocks where they fit.

Throughout the rest of our life, we would need to constantly return to these rocks as the basic of our life. These include our passion, our mission and our vision.

We hear the word “passion” thrown about in myriad contexts — work, food, cars, sports, computers, whatever.

“Passion” seems to generate emotion, actually over-emotion, inside the heart.

The problem with understanding passion as “emotion” is that both the object and feelings can change at whim. We overemote over different objects at the same time and over the same object at different times.

If what we feel at any particular moment determines our passion, we easily retreat to a preJesus heartset.

It is very possible to return to “the evil desires we had when we lived in ignorance,” says Apostle Peter in 1 Peter 1:14.

Passion addresses the biblical question: “What have you set your heart upon?” The root meaning of the word is related to “suffering,” as in Passion Week.

That definition forces the real question: “What have we set our heart upon intensely enough that we are willing to sacrifice for it?”

Jesus set his heart upon us so intensely that he was willing

to die for us. He is passionate about us.

In return, because he first loved us, the believer’s passion must be his love for Jesus, an expectation clearly stated in the first commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength” (Mark 12:30).

Simply and straightforwardly, God wants our heart set upon Him whatever it takes. The first life-rock settles the question of our passion — to love Him for who He is with all we have got.

At this juncture, a natural question arises: Can I be passionate about other stuff in my life? My mate and family? What about sport and a team? And, for a business person, his work and deals?

Of course! We can possess many passions in life, but only one passion of life.

Taking any or many of those passions in life and turning them into the passion of our life causes spiritual dysfunction. We fall into idolatry.

If our passions are of equal weight, they will compete and weaken our spiritual vitality. If they are founded and flow from a singular passion — the Lord Jesus — we will experience his promise of life in all its fullness and dimensions.

The fact of the matter is simple: We can’t love all the other stuff rightly if we don’t love Jesus as we should.

Marriage illustrates this. If our relationship with our spouse is smooth, everything else is a little easier. If it isn’t, everything else is affected adversely.

Similarly, do not be afraid of loving God as your first love. For then we can experience everything else — our family, business, even our cars, rightly.

When we love and enjoy Him, we can love and enjoy those passions in life, whether persons or things, fully and rightly.

Alma Mable Dollman Voros, age 92 passed away peacefully, November 3, 2016 in Kamloops, B.C. She was born on March 3, 1924 in MacNutt, Saskatchewan. She was one of nine children born to parents Richard and Annie Brummund. She is survived by one sister Irean Milke of Kelowna, B.C. and one brother Ron Brummond of Medicine Hat, AB., and nine children, Linda Anderson (Don), Caroline Knox (Jim), Shirley Krusel,(Al) Rick Dollman (Diane), Marilyn Acheson (Randy), Elaine Tylor, Gord Dollman(Katrina), Danny Dollman (Shaun) and Gary Dollman. She is also survived by 34 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her first husband Leonard Dollman, her second husband Frank Voros, her sons David Dollman, Lenny Dollman, and her grandson Curtis Dollman. Five brothers and one sister, Albert Brummund, Leonard Brummond, Eddie Brummond and one sister Edna Brummund. As well as Mom and Dad Brummond, Richard and Annie. Mom’s greatest accomplishment was having babies and raising them to adulthood. She gave birth to 11 children six boys and five girls all in a span of 16 years. That was her vow to the Lord she would often declare. The Lord blessed that vow as she left quite a heritage behind, and there still coming in multiples. She Married her first husband Leonard Dollman on June 19, 1948 to whom all 11 children belonged. Dad passed away July 24, 1996 after 48 years of marriage. It was one year later that Frank Voros, a widower himself caught my mother’s eye and they were married a year and a half later December 14, 1997. That union lasted nine years as Frank passed away October 15, 2006 to be with the Lord. Mom later lived a number of years at Brock Housing Complex in her own apartment next door to her long time friend Vera Mertz. She later moved to the senior’s apartment complex “The Shores Retirement Residence” with awesome staff that took good care of mom in her self contained suite. Most of mom’s spiritual side comes from her Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and the church family she called home.

That is “Full Gospel Church” in Kamloops. Mother was one of the five families back in 1960 that church planted “Full Gospel” She moved to Vancouver for nine years but sent her tithes and offerings back home. Some of Mom’s favourite sayings were “It bears repeating” and “Forgive and love again” Mothers favourite colour was red, her favourite number was ten. To all her friends she leaves behind and loved so dearly, she doesn’t say goodbye but she says “Good night” Much thanks and appreciation goes out to the Kamloops Ponderosa Lodge where mom received expert care with gracious hands that really cared during her final months of her life.

David S. Woodruff (Woody) passed away peacefully in his sleep in his home at Overlander Extended Care Hospital on November 4, 2016 aged 82 years. Survived by his daughters Marilee (Greg) Hermiston, Marci (Alan) Henderson, his grandsons Jordan Hermiston, Daren (Lexi) Hermiston and Corey (Brooke Dennill) Hermiston, sisters Elnor (Finlay) McNaughton, Cheryl (Ralph) Wilkey, sister-in-law Doris Woodruff and many wonderful nieces and nephews, family and friends.

Pre-deceased by his wife Joyce, his father Merrill Woodruff, his mother and step-father Bernice and Walter Brown and his brother Emerson Woodruff and his sister-in-law Phyllis Bader.

Woody was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta on March 17, 1934. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1954 and served in the regular forces for 34 years and the reserve forces for five years before his retirement.

He was a lifelong hockey player and golfer. He and Joyce were married in June of 1956 and settled in Victoria where they raised their daughters. They retired to Vernon and then Kamloops and enjoyed a wonderful retirement with their daughters, sons-inlaw and grandsons.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Overlander Extended Care Hospital Auxiliary in Woody’s name.

The family would like to extend our deepest thanks, appreciation and love to the angels at Overlander, Blueberry Lane who took such wonderful care of our father and papa for the last year and a half.

January 8 1918 - October 27 2016 It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Marjorie Keene at Salmon Arm Hospital.

Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Lloyd in 2007.

She will be lovingly remembered by her three sons Jim (Julie), Doug (Mary), Bruce (Catharine), daughter inlaw Dee, youngest sister Nora Dixon, and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as well as the residents and staff at Parkside in Chase where she resided for her final years.

Marjorie Stewart was born in Sedgewick, Alberta. She later moved with her family to their new homestead at Last Lake near Brownvale, Alberta. She attended Blue Hawk School and Peace River High School, and later graduating from the McTavish Business college in Edmonton.

She began her business career with the Alberta Dairy Pool in Hardisty, and later the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Berwyn and at various locations in Alberta, then on to Yellowknife where she met her future husband Lloyd. They were married in Edmonton on September 30th, 1947.

They resided for a short time in Victoria - where Jim was born, then White Rock and then on to 150 Mile House and Williams Lake where Doug and Bruce were born.

They later moved to Dawson Creek, then retiring to Kamloops in 1978 where they spent many happy years on the river. Mom and Dad downsized in 2005 - moving to Chase, where Mom spent the last 3 years at Parkside assisted living.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 12, 2016 in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, 285 Fortune Drive. Should friends desire, a small donation in Marjorie’s name to the Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge Society, or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Dana Davies of Kamloops, BC, passed away on October 28, 2016 at 68 years of age. She is survived by her loving partner Brian Avery and her daughter Erin Torry of Kamloops, BC, brothers and sisters: Marina Davies, Lloyd (Janet) Davies and Allan Davies, nieces and nephews: Maralee (Jeff) Webber, Morgan (Emma) Webber, Melissa (Daniel) Page, Lidia (Derek) Davies, Brandon (Samantha) Davies, Trevor (Becky) Gorgichuk, great nieces and nephews: Darby, Adam, Jackson, Samuel, Angelina, Gabriel, William, Georgina, Olivia, Sullivan and Raegan.

She was predeceased by her brother Grant Davies.

When Dana was born on March 7, 1948, who could have imagined all the lives she would enrich and the many friends she would make in the too-short span of her life? Her love for others was reflected back at her and, as her life came to an end, on October 28, 2016, there was an outpouring of love for Dana.

Dana was a social person who found it easy to make friends. Anyone who went shopping with her, had better be prepared for a long stay in the store. She usually met a friend or two and had long, long conversations.

Sometimes, these conversations in person were not enough, and later in the day, she and her friends would spend an hour or two, or three, on the phone, catching up on what they did not cover earlier. Oh yes, she had the gift of gab, and was reputed to have the ability to talk to a post. Fortunate post.

Dana spent her first 18 years in Peachland, BC, developing a great love for the town, lake, and local friends and relatives. On graduating from high school she attended college in Nelson. From there she moved to Calgary where she worked in Grace Hospital. Then she moved to Kamloops where she worked in a doctor’s office. Later she became a forester. The work was hard but there were moments she cherished, such as flying over the forests in a helicopter.

Many of Dana’s friends still live in Peachland. Among her good friends is a group that call themselves the

“Princeton Avenue Girls”.

Whenever they met, it was a cue for their spouses to find sanctuary elsewhere, because it was “girl time”.

The guys were not totally ignored, though, and would be cheerfully welcomed when they returned, after the “girls” had talked themselves out. Well, that never quite happened.

This summer Dana and her high school graduating class attended their fiftieth high school graduating class reunion in Peachland. That was one of the events that capped off a life well-lived. The gardens at her home looked better than they had for a few years, with plenty of geraniums, her favourite flowers. Two events at North Barriere Lake made this summer memorable. First, a gathering of friends was a happy event, as usual. Later there was a gathering of family members which turned out to be one of the best.

We are left with memories of Dana. They are good memories, and will be shared over and over with friends and family in coming years. We shall begin with a Celebration of Dana’s Life in March, at the home where she lived in Kamloops for the last thirteen years with her partner, Brian Avery. This was Dana’s final wish.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Elizabeth Anne Hunter (nee Harris) June 18, 1920 - November 2, 2016

Wild roses were blooming when Elizabeth began her life on a prairie homestead in Patience, Alberta. Lib had a close and loving relationship with her parents Harry and Mabel, and her two sisters, Jaffrey and Patience. Life was not easy for many families after WWI and during the great Depression; Harry (a veteran) left the farm, while Mabel and the girls went back to England. After a brief sojourn there, and sadly leaving Jaffy to be raised by English relatives, Lib, with her younger sister Pay and mother, returned to Canada, to reside with Mabel’s brother Jack, in Woodbridge, Ontario. Lib received her education at St. Mildred’s College and developed a life-long interest in drawing and painting, a talent and gift bestowed by her mother.

During WWII, Lib worked as a typist in a factory where the first Lancaster bomber was built, then trained in Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto. It was while working as an OT at Queen Mary Veteran’s Hospital in Montreal that she met an eager young intern, Douglas Robert Hunter, who was immediately smitten by her beauty, gentle kindness and quick wit. They married May 14, 1949 and together they raised nine children.

Lib was a devoted sister, wife and mother who always put the needs of others ahead of her own. While living in various Ontario communities, Lib was very busy raising their growing young family and supporting Doug through his medical career. They had many family camping and canoe trips in Ontario, which started their tradition of month-long summer holidays in August. Rising to the challenges of camping in those early days with small children and babies, cloth diapers and canvas tents, was a testament to their determination to pursue an adventurous lifestyle. In 1964, they moved the family to Kamloops, BC, where they continued enjoying an active life, square dancing, skiing, sailing, canoeing and hiking.

Lib, ever resourceful, competently coordinated the increasingly complex family activities. Then, in 1974, pursuing a latent dream, Lib and Doug purchased Twin Creeks Ranch in Upper Hat Creek,

where they worked side by side for almost twenty years raising beef cattle. Lib loved sharing chores and activities with family and neighbours in the beautiful mountain valley and it was during this time that she reconnected with her long lost father.

Lib and Doug sold the ranch and retired to Kamloops, where they continued to square dance, paddle and cross-country ski into their late 80’s. She and Doug were familiar figures on the Stake Lake ski trails, on the Goose Lake Road or resting on their walkers nearer their home. Lib continued her daily walks until shortly before her death. Over the years, inspired by nature, Lib continued to draw and paint whenever she had the opportunity, and when blessed with grandchildren, wrote and illustrated treasured stories for them.

A Vanished Friend

September 15, 1936 - November 4, 2016 It is with great sadness that the family announces that Dr. Kenneth G. Taylor passed away peacefully in hospice on Friday, November 4, 2016 in the afternoon. He is survived by his wife Lily, his children Norman, Renee, Colin, Hillary, stepchildren Holly and Tony Chan, his grandchildren Kendalyn and Landon as well as many members of the family of his younger brother Len.

Ken was born in Winnipeg on September 15, 1936, and as a child moved with his father George, mother Eunice and Len to BC after the war. While living near the ocean in Deep Cove, he formed the first of his many lifelong passions, in this case, zoology (especially marine biology and entomology). He played rugby at high school, and became a member of the ski patrol at Mt. Seymour. While at UBC, he added bird-watching and hiking – usually in bad weather - to his interests. After working as a student entomologist at the Summerland Research Station, he graduated and became a high school teacher in 1962, working in the Kootenays. There he joined the local judo and rock-climbing clubs.

After completing his doctorate at Washington State University, he and his family moved to Kamloops in 1970 as a Pioneer Faculty Member of Cariboo College, one of the very first biology instructors. He helped lay the foundations for many of the programs that now exist at Thompson Rivers University, and is warmly remembered by many of his colleagues and students. He spent much of his time in extra-curricular activities with students, notably biology field trips to the Marine Station at Bamfield and other locations. Strangely enough, many of these excursions also occurred in bad weather, much like many of the camping and canoeing trips that his children – eventually – fondly remember. During this time, his first marriage ended in 1979, and he married Lily Chew in 1997. He retired from the University College of the Cariboo in 1998 after 28 years of teaching.

After retirement, he pursued his continuing passions for travel and bird-watching with Lily, as well as golf, reading and fiercely competitive bridge at the Kamloops Duplicate Bridge Club where he became a Life Master. Travel (especially involving birding) took him and Lily on many wonderful trips to at least 18 countries, several of them more than once. These included Australia, Borneo, Ecuador and Costa Rica. He was a member of the Kamloops Naturalists Club, going out on numerous bird counts for as long as he was able to do so.

The family wishes to thank all those who came to visit him in the last months of his life, especially his good friends at the bridge club. In lieu of cards and flowers, they ask that a voluntary donation be made to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice in his memory instead (72 Whiteshield Crescent South, Kamloops, BC V2E 2S9) At Ken’s request, there will be no formal memorial service.

amloops crowds eagerly awaited the latest news on Aug. 4, 1914, as Britain declared war on Germany, bringing Canada into a conflict that would alter romantic notions of war.

The universal sentiment is preserved in the 100-year-old pages of the city’s newspapers — an enthusiasm not matched 25 years later at the onset of the Second World War. But by 1918, more than 60,000 Canadians had lost their lives fighting in the First World War — 175 of them from Kamloops.

The Inland Sentinel, later the Kamloops Standard-Sentinel, like other newspapers of the early 20th century, were key resources during this globally pivotal time.

proclamation of martial law as a precursor of war, Kamloops was all agog with growing excitement. There were unusual throngs about, and groups discussing the situation at the principle resorts.

The Sentinel office in particular was a magnet which drew hundreds of people during the day to study its bulletins.

There was a general expectation that ominous news of a decisive character must come at any minute.

When at last the actual war news came through just before 5 o’clock, the first batches of papers off the press went like wildfire and the small boys became riotous in addition to their noisy enthusiasm.

As the evening wore on the excited interest was maintained, and our offices — inside and out — were the rendezvous for large numbers of people. *** At the onset of war, the local branch of the Rocky Mountain Rangers (R.M.R.) was immediately directed to be ready for active service, according to war history compiled by the Kamloops Museum.

The Standard reported record recruiting for the 172nd Battalion under the command of Col. John Richard Vicars — a prominent figure in the history of the R.M.R. regiment and the namesake of the Kamloops Armoury.

In less than three weeks, more than half the battalion had been enlisted and, by the 90-day mark, Vicars had recruited 1,250 men.

Two years after Britain declared war, the R.M.R. 172nd Battalion embarked for England.

Soldiers left from the training camp in Vernon to much fanfare and well wishes. *** Oct. 20, 1916 The Kamloops Standard LOCAL BATTALION NOW ON THE ROAD TO ENGLAND Every one who saw the Rocky Mountain Rangers swinging down the hill from the encampment felt

assured that the men from central British Columbia would worthily uphold the reputation already earned by the Western regiments in Canada’s overseas forces.

A well selected, splendidly set up body they appeared, and the very swing of the column as it marched in perfect unison showed the physical fitness of every man in the unit.

When the hour of departure drew near the entire garrison with bands and bugle bands paraded to give rousing farewell to the entraining regiment and the crowd of spectators gathered at the train would lead the onlookers to

believe that all of Vernon and half the surrounding district were on the spot.

Mothers, wives, sweethearts, relatives and friends were gathered about the departing soldiers in the hope of a last chance to wish their boys a last farewell and safe return when the work in hand was finished. *** Heavy fighting met members who embarked with the 172nd Battalion and,

by October 1917, the initial regiment had few living original members, according to the Kamloops Museum.

By this time, many of

them were in France.

The Red Cross Society played a significant role in providing food and clothing for soldiers overseas.

The Soldiers’ Comforts Club sent candy and tobacco which, the Standard reported, was a suitable gift for any departing soldier. *** Sept. 21, 1917 The Kamloops Standard LETTER FROM F. A. It is just a year today since I came to France.

I am in the line at the present time and we have a very good dug out this time, the best I have ever had. It’s about twenty-five to thirty feet underground and one that we took off the old Huns.

We have a sideboard, chair, spring beds and a table, which they had taken out of French houses.

We have all we want outside of white sheets for the beds. All we have is our overcoats but we can sleep anywhere now.

I’ve slept in chicken houses, stables, trenches and pretty near everything you could think of, so you can see your brother is a pretty tough kid.

George is still at Blightly but I expect he will soon be back again.

They are giving us leave again now, there is two a week going to Blightly. Some of the boys are going to Paris, but if I get leave I will go to England.

They seem to think the war will be over this fall.

I certainly hope they are right; it’s been going on long enough and all the men are fed up with it.

We lost three men on the trip in so far, three out of twelve. They have been in about three weeks now, but I’ve only been in about two days; had been just sent back from the base four days and was sent to help fill the place of the men lost.

Young Adams, who had been wounded soon after we got to France, has returned again, and we both came back to our old Company together and the machine gun.

Remember me to all the folks.

It left Vicars with the most carefully selected body of soldiers, the newspaper reported.

Jack Reed, one of our fellows, has won the V. C. — more power to his elbow.

But then he has gone to Blightly. Too bad the people abused Capt. Carter, for it was not his fault, as he had to return. There are others who deserved it a hundred times worse.

Kamloops after contracting trench fever — according to the history of the R.M.R. — and took up caring for soldiers returning from war.

He led the creation of The Great War Veteran’s Association in 1918 and collected the names of the Kamloops men who died overseas.

In the early years, Remembrance Day was celebrated with a parade and services in Riverside Park and a dance, according to the Kamloops Museum.

After 1925, Remembrance Day Services were held at the cenotaph.

Reporting from the city’s newspaper, now the Kamloops Sentinel, at the onset of the Second World War was not nearly as colourful as it was in 1914, and notably more serious in its enthusiasm given the memories of lives lost decades earlier.

Canada had also suffered during the Great Depression, which lasted

until the onset of the war in 1939.

Yet, Kamloops’ financial position was “considerably more encouraging” than it was at the outbreak of the First World War, the Sentinel reported in early 1940.

“But, there’s no telling what may happen in the war years to come,” the paper reads.

Canada began speeding up its war effort in the late months of 1939. The Sentinel relayed reports from Ottawa explaining the federal government’s plan to establish manufacturing plants for ammunition and supplies in co-operation with the British government.

Many members of the Rocky Mountain Rangers left for overseas shortly after war was declared, however not as a unit.

In early of 1940, another contingent of R.M.R. left to join various Canadian regiments. In June, The Sentinel reported the R.M.R. had been ordered to recruit war strength, and was to immediately enlist 28 officers and 968 other ranks.

The newspaper noted the news likely meant local Rangers would find their place among units assigned to overseas service.

On Dominion Day in 1940, mayor Charles E. Scanlan spoke to crowds gathered in Riverside Park, stating Canada had never faced such conditions as it currently was. *** July 4, 1940 The Kamloops Sentinel LET US CONSECRATE OURSELVES TODAY TO CAUSE OF FREEDOM “Of the commonwealth, Canada — our homeland — ranks a senior partner. Free people of the world look over in this hour to Canada to fulfill her role by the side of the motherland in the struggle to preserve for the present and future generations our civilized institutions.

“As Canadians, we cannot, we dare not, stand by idly by and watch our freedom disappear into the darkness of a dictator’s rule. . . .

“In cottage or mansion,” continued the mayor, “in high estate or low estate, there must be but one united effort.

One all-consuming purpose must dominate the minds of all to the exclusion of personal interest, sectional differences, or political advantage.

“We must have one outstanding all-dominating purpose: the preservation of human liberty through the defeat of fascism and naziism.” *** In August of 1940, the Sentinel estimated there were around 250 local men on active service, though no definite number was known.

The war efforts at home in Canada supported emergency needs on a national

level. News from Toronto in early 1940 noted $5,000,000 contributed voluntary in the year earlier had been spent meeting the emergency calls of the Red Cross, the Sentinel reported.

Four-million dollars had been dedicated to war work and $725,000 for peacetime services.

Kamloops Red Cross worked diligently to provide hospital supplies needed overseas, in addition to establishing home nursing classes. *** Jan. 12, 1940 The Kamloops Sentinel KAMLOOPS RED CROSS SENDS ITS FIRST SUPPLIES OVERSEAS

By Janet W. Hall, Red Cross Secretary: W.H.B. Linnell, chairman of the Red Cross transportation committee and, of course, his truck, have been busy lately making arrangements for the shipping of the first consignment of Red Cross hospital supplies for overseas.

These were packed in the Red Cross headquarters and were finally sent off yesterday — some 700 articles including socks, sweaters, hospital gowns, pneumonia jackets, bandages, pillow slips and towels.

That is not a bad showing, is it, when one considers that our sewing supplies, which had been delayed, did not arrive until the middle of October and that the Christmas holidays necessarily slowed up our activities?

Now, however, we have plenty of supplies, our sewing groups are well organized and everyone is putting Red Cross work days on their “must” list; you just watch the wool fly from now on! *** When the end of war was near, the Sentinel reported Mayor G. R. Williams had notified citizens such news would be announced over the radio, CFJC Kamloops, with a siren sounding three times.

Plans were established for storefronts to close when the news came. *** May 2, 1945 The Kamloops Sentinel KAMLOOPS SOLDIER WRITES: ‘HELP US TO HELP YOU GET YOUR DEAR ONES HOME SAFE’ Another interesting letter has been received from Spr. E. M. Bennett of Kamloops: “Just a line or so to say I’m fine and going strong and we are still after Jerry, and as you know the battle is going fine so far and if all goes well you can expect me for the lacrosse playoffs this fall even if I’m not able to play.

“As you know, we have reached our destination, Germany, and now we are on our main run for the big prize and hope all goes well as before.

“We have sure had some real tough battles this winter but we couldn’t let you folks down so we just kept going ahead from town to town until we cleaned this side of the river and now we are on the road home.

“I hope and the faster we get your help the faster we can finish the trip, although we had a long journey, and now we see the home front in our vision.

“There can be nothing to stop us now.” * ** When news of the war’s end came on May 7, 1945 the Sentinel published a special edition with the vibrant headline: Victory!

A service of “thanksgiving” was held in Riverside Park that afternoon, attended by upwards of 2,000 people, the newspaper reported.

“The big crowd was quiet, almost grave, both at the park and on dispersal,” the front page reads.

The following evening, the Legion hosted a torchlit parade through town, led by the band of the 2nd Battalion

The air raid siren was sounded at 7:40 and immediately following Mayor G.R. Williams was heard over station CFJC. The great news was received with restrained enthusiasm throughout the city. There was a tone of thanksgiving and good cheer which at no time during

the day reached the point of spontaneous or noisy celebration. The Sentinel published a victory extra Monday morning. It was a great day for the radio with station CFJC bringing to its listeners news, special bulletins, triumphant music and celebration broadcasts from far and near.

Loud speakers atop the Bank of Commerce building broadcast CFJC programs all day and added to the feeling of excitement and festivity in the downtown streets. *** On Nov. 11, 1945, Kamloops paid tribute to its fallen soldiers, gathering at the cenotaph for a solemn

service.

The Sentinel reported the city had lost 75 men in the Second World War. “We are resolved to see that the parents, widows or orphans of those who marched away but did not come back, shall never want,” said Rev. John McTurk.

“It is the hope of the Legion that every man who has ever worn the king’s uniform shall never want, and will be able to keep himself and his indecency until the end of life.”

Ceremonies at Riverside Park will start tomorrow just before 11 a.m. The Legion is encouraging all veterans, retired and currently serving, and Legion members and their families who would like to partake in the ceremonies to meet at the tent at the Heritage House entrance to the park no later than 10:30 a.m.

The stones have been cleaned, the rust removed, and the broken glass replaced. But when Kamloops residents gather at the Memorial Hill Park cenotaph today, they may notice one tiny detail missing from the restored monument.

While restored clock faces were installed in the cenotaph on Monday, the hands and mechanism that will see the longbroken timepiece finally count the hours won’t be ready for a few more weeks.

“It’s the most delicate part of the whole project and there’s a lot of components involved, so that’s why it’s taking a bit longer,” said Julia Cyr, supervisor at the Kamloops Museum and Archives.

Repairs to the clock, which has reportedly not worked since the cenotaph was first built in the 1920s, are ahead of

Cyr had initially expected the clock work to be completed in early 2017. Now, the mechanical work, as well as the installation of ground lights and the electrification of the monument site, are on track to finish before the end of the month.

Cyr said the clock project has taken longer than other work on the cenotaph due to its complexity, which required special pieces to be manufactured.

“It’s about the perfect measurements,” she said.

“The shaft of the clock has to fit through the glasswork so you can have the hands move, so it’s a lot of really detailed back and forth making sure that it’s perfect.”

At the same time the clockworks are installed, contractors will also finish work on four lights that will illuminate the cenotaph, finishing the project.

The federal government added another $25,000 for the works via a Heritage Canada Grant.

As part of the project, the concrete pad under the monument has been expanded and levelled, additional benches and pathways and decorative fencing have been added, as well as flower beds and improved landscaping.

The cenotaph itself has been washed and repaired, and its wooden door refurbished.

The door’s ironwork has been newly powdercoated — a donation from a local firm — to prevent rust, as have the clock’s hands.

“We want to make sure we get this right,” Cyr said of the remaining work.

“We are dealing with a really old cenotaph and I don’t want to cause any damage to it, so I’m happy we’ve taken our time with this project.”

hen ISIS fighters took control of Palmyra, a UNESCO world heritage site in Syria, earlier this year, they destroyed many of that city’s ancient artifacts.

The ARC/K Project, created in 2014, has the goal of creating a digital library to house art and artifacts in danger of destruction, using cameras and software that can create three-dimensional images.

Brian Pope, founder of the ARC/K project — “arch” for archives and the K added to create the image of an ark saving essential parts of the world — said his company gathered together any pho-

tographs of the artifacts they could find over an eight-year period and used software to create models he hopes can be used in coming years to restore or rebuild those destroyed by the jihadists.

Pope has brought that technology, along with several staff, to Kamloops to do some other creating, using the same software to develop three-dimensional images of the city’s heritage steam engine 2141, of pit houses on the T’kemlups Indian Band land and of some of the artifacts at the Secwepemc Museum and Heritage Gardens and the Kamloops Museum and Archives.

He’s doing it all on his own dime, said Vicci Weller, the film commissioner for the Thompson-Nicola Regional District and one of Pope’s friends.

The goal is not so much preservation as it is to help the society that keeps the 2141 in working condition to make money from its use in film productions.

Weller said in recent years, CN has not allowed the society to take the train onto the track for filming, citing the number of trains using the track and liability concerns.

The last time CN let the society use the train on its track was for the movie Gold in 2013 and, before that, the 2008 TV series Iron Road.

The images ARC/K is creating could be used by digital artists on film productions, Weller said.

She started playing violin at age nine. Then ballet lessons were added. At one point, she was learning ballroom dancing. She majored at university in visual arts with a theatre minor and was still studying and playing violin.

At some point, however, she knew she had to make a decision and focused on music — which eventually took her away from her violin and into a much more demanding job as a conductor.

“Being a conductor makes me feel alive and happy,” said Leonard, the first of four potential conductors for the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra to come to Kamloops and pick up the baton for performances on Saturday at Sagebrush Theatre and Sunday in Salmon Arm. “I love the human quality of being a conductor,” Leonard said. “I like to be part of building a vibrant community. Music is part of the greater ecosystem and it’s what creates a great city.

“For me, I get to live my passion.”

While she loves the art of conducting and finds her mindset is always reflective of the works being performed, one of her favourite pieces is Gurrelieder by Arnold Schoenberg. It is not on the program this weekend. The KSO chose works by Schumann and Haydn.

While she opted for music, Leonard said her love of the arts comes out in her conducting.

“I conduct with my whole body, my whole being,” she said. “I’m very connected to the music.

It speaks through my whole body and I completely abandon myself.”

KSO conductor Bruce Dunn is retiring after this season. Leonard was resident conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra from 2009 to 2012 and associate director for the 2012-2013 season. She is now music director of the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra.

Others who will guest conduct through this season before a new conductor is announced include Leslie Dala, Dina Gilbert and Martin MacDonald.

John Jenkins’ Smalltown Revival has played throughout the Interior, but the show at the Dirty Jersey, 1200 Eighth St., on Friday, Nov. 18, is the first time they’ve come to Kamloops. Entertainment called him back, landing Pope first with a television station in Honolulu and then with George Lucas’s Industrial Light and Magic, when he worked on visual effects for movies including Mercury Rising, Deep Impact, Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace (he helped create the chariot race), Wild Wild West and Planet of the Apes.

In 2011, he created Last Rocket Out Pictures and, in 2015, created Cognition, which he describes as a

way to combine “a passion for art, film and technology with a lifelong commitment to philanthropy.”

Pope said his Palmyra work came from seeing one too many headlines on the destruction in the Syrian city “and I just had enough.”

“I thought I have to do something. I felt helpless but I had tools for making movies that could help society and that could be more fulfilling,” he said.

“I was hoping to use some of what needs to be done in cultural preservation and what’s being done in Hollywood to do something better. The business of cultural heritage and preservation can’t just be left in

the hands of academia.”

Pope said his interest in shooting other parts of the area, including on TIB land, stem not only from his First Nations heritage but from the fact the “historical stories about Kamloops and Walhachin areas have captured my heart and imagination.”

He sees their potential as benefiting ARC/K as well, using the works they create to help market it.

Weller sees other possibilities that could use the technology of ARC/K with the needs of film production companies. The Macabee fossil lands, for example, are a protected area but which could be used in a virtual way in films.

By Jessica Wallace An elephant was in the room at Cjs Nightclub Tuesday night, when The Trews stopped in town for a show promoting its latest release.

That elephant was the United States election.

I was expecting round two after an electric show a couple years ago at the same venue, especially since their new greatest hits album Time Capsule would include many songs from that memorable performance.

The show didn’t live up to hype for me, however, and I blame Donald Trump.

The MacDonald brothers ripped it up on stage and the new drummer Gavin Maguire proved he is worthy of a place in the band, but it was hard to focus or appreciate the Canadian rockers when Trump was taking Pennsylvania.

Fullfilling the mantra of The Power of Positive Drinking couldn’t have changed things.

Every thump of the kick drum boomed “Trump, Trump, Trump” as Twitter updates rolled in via smartphone.

The band maybe felt it, too, because they rushed out pretty quickly after the show, which wrapped up around the time we learned Hillary Clinton would not be making her concession speech that night.

Top highlight was The Trews’ new song, Beautiful and Tragic, which was fun to dance to and got me excited for them to start working on a new album next year.

In flipping between the two live shows, the title also summed up my night, which felt mostly tragic.

Lesson learned?

Opt out of fun events that overlap historically significant ones.

Tom Cochrane coming

Twenty-five years after he released Mad Mad World, Tom Cochrane is hitting the highway again with his former Red Rider bandmates Kenny Greet and Jeff Jones to recreate the iconic album in concert, with a stop in Kamloops on March 4.

Tickets are $64.50 and $49.50 plus applicable service charges; they go on sale today at noon.

A deluxe two-CD edition was released this week, along with an original demo recording of Love Is A Highway — which led to the single Life Is A Highway — and a 1992 concert performance in Chicago.

Elephants focus of talk

Shorf Chowdhury will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, Nov. 17, meeting of the Kamloops Naturalist Club. The graduate student will talk about his work with Asian elephants.

University, who will talk about badgers and rattlesnakes.

ying on the Mediterranean Sea near the north end of the Costa Brava, Barcelona is more than Spain’s second largest city, its largest port and its chief commercial and industrial centre.

It is also Spain’s most user-friendly city, where walking is the only way to experience the birthplace of Antonio Gaudi, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro — three of many Barcelonans who have defined the world of Spanish romanticism and cultural flamboyance.

The Carthaginians founded the city and it flourished under the Romans and Visigoths before falling to the Moors and Charlemagne. Evidence of the past is everywhere — in its structures, overhead and under foot.

Today’s Barcelona is exactly what it always has been, the Spanish centre of anarchism and other radical political and intellectual movements and it’s that past that gives the city ongoing vitality with a population determined to prove its differences.

Easily immerse yourself in Barcelona’s charm and delights found in great cathedrals, ancient buildings, cosmopolitan attitudes, unique architecture, trendy nightspots, music and art.

Yet for many visitors, Barcelona’s identity can be summed up in a single word: Gaudi.

When they leave, the most vivid memory many take with them is work left behind by 19th- and early 20th-century architect, Antoni Gaudi, whose imprint on this city is enormous even though he left

relatively few examples of his style.

His impact on building flair was so powerful and his work so unique and overwhelming there is even an English language fashion insult named after him.

Overdress with flamboyant style and bright colours and someone might say, “Don’t you think that’s too Gaudi?”

Gaudi was as much an artist as he was a builder of structure.

You simply cannot mistake his work for someone else’s and that is probably why his personal style did not travel well in his day — although Gaudi’s style of few straight lines and barely any right angles is today’s architectural fashion.

It is easy to visit his major works with their wavy building fronts, rooftop sculptures that hide pipes and elaborate tile work since several are within easy walking distance of the Placa de Catalunya, the city centre.

The crown jewel of his talents is at the nearby Sagrada Familia, the massive cathedral still under construction, long after Gaudi’s death in 1926.

Park Guell, in the northern part of the city and easily accessible by tram, is both a cultural and entertaining experience with building shapes that deliver fun and delight to both children and adults. Visit Gaudi’s old home and museum at the edge of the park.

However, the city is too energetic and historically complex to be identified by only one person’s work.

It is the most cosmopolitan, modern and avant-garde city in Spain and a place where English is spoken almost as a second language.

from the plaza to the Mediterranean — is comparable to Paris’ Left Bank and it is where Barcelonans pass time at bookstalls, buy flowers, converse with artists, have their portraits painted in chalk, sit in cafes and watch the world walk by.

Lined with shops, cafes, flower stalls, street performers and a wonderful food market called Boqueria, it is one of the city’s most popular places.

On your walk, you will pass the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona’s circa 1848 opera house, gutted by a fire in 1994 and since rebuilt.

Close by is the Barrio Gothic (The Gothic Quarter) with its winding streets, busy squares, small cafes and ancient structures. The city began here as the Roman settlement, Barcino, and the old Roman main roads go through the area today. Most of the preserved monuments date from the 14th and 15 centuries, when Barcelona was a major maritime power.

It is easy to lose yourself in the Bario with its many narrow and winding streets, but once you locate the Cathedral of Santa Eulalia (13th to 15th centuries) everything makes sense. Boutiques, antique shops and artisan galleries are plentiful.

It’s best known attractions include the Picasso Museum and the Santa Maria del Mar cathedral, one of many cathedrals worth inspecting in Barcelona.

Built between 1329 and 1383, its simple lines and sophisticated elegance stands in contrast to Barcelona’s mostly ornate and Gaudi architecture.
