A Message from CEO, A Message from CEO, Heidi Coleman I knew when I looked up “community” in the dictionary I would find Kamloops! I have been a part of this community for 4 years now, and I continue to be overwhelmed by the love and support that people offer to our hospital. Whenever we are in need of a new piece of equipment, require help for an event, are looking for volunteers, you are always here for us and eager to help. Thank you! It has been a monumental year at the hospital with the completion of the Clinical Services Building (CSB). We’ve heard numerous people express their surprise at how beautiful the building is – they were expecting “just a parkade”. But it is so much more than that. With new and improved spaces for our UBC Family Practice Residency Program including a state-of-the-art simulation lab and the Ken Lepin Lecture Theatre it will be a place of learning for all our healthcare professionals. The new Rae Fawcett Breast Health Clinic, made possible through the wonderful partnership of Interior Health, hospital administrators, physicians, and a generous donation by Rae Fawcett and other donors (see story page 11), will change the face of women’s breast health in our region – and significantly reduce the wait time for diagnosis. And let’s not forget the many patients who have struggled for years walking up the stairs from Columbia Street who will now have elevator access through the CSB into the hospital.

A New Transport Ventilator for RIH’s High Acuity Response Team The High Acuity Response Team (HART) is a groundbased patient transportation model that involves both BC Ambulance Service and Interior Health. Speciallytrained RIH nurses and respiratory therapists are members of the HART team who provide patient care during the transfer of patients from rural sites to higher level facilities like RIH. This service ensures high standards of care for any high acuity patient transfer in our region.

determined that Elaine was in heart failure – she had only 20% heart function. She was not responding to typical treatment measures for her RIH FOUNDATION –heart COMMUNITY CONNECTION 2015/16 condition, and due to the delicate nature of also carrying twins she would need to be airlifted immediately to Vancouver.

Working Together to Save Three Lives Last summer, Elaine began experiencing shortness of breath, but figured it was simply a side effect of being pregnant with twins. To err on the side of caution, she decided to consult with a doctor at Royal Inland Hospital. It was weeks before Elaine returned home. Elaine was assured that her babies were fine, but she was sent immediately for further testing. “The doctors and nurses did such a remarkable job of keeping me calm.” The cardiologist on call, Dr. Stephen Chow, determined that Elaine was in heart failure – she had only 20% heart function. She was not responding to typical treatment measures for her heart condition, and due to the delicate nature of also carrying twins she would need to be airlifted immediately to Vancouver. In the meantime, Dr. Chow had been communicating with physicians in Vancouver. When she arrived, Elaine was greeted by a team of 12 medical professionals. “My husband, Brent, had been keeping me calm, but the seriousness of my condition sunk in for both of us when we were met by such a specialized team. They knew I needed to deliver the babies, but they didn’t know if I had the strength to survive doing so.” After steroid treatments, the next morning Elaine delivered 2 tiny twin boys at just 30 weeks gestation. Due to her heart failure and delivery via C-section, Elaine developed another serious complication – a blood clot in her lung. She wasn’t able to snuggle her newborns until 24 hours after they were born. Her babies were doing well, but she was fighting for her life. They spent 5 weeks in Vancouver until 2 beds became available in the RIH NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and an infant transport team airlifted them back to Kamloops. “When we finally arrived at the NICU, we were greeted with the most loving group of nurses who had been anxiously awaiting our arrival.” “I cannot say enough good things about the staff in the NICU. The nurses would cuddle my babies when I couldn’t – I knew they were being loved and cared for in the best possible way. If you need to put your newborn

Elaine with sons Thomas and Jack. babies in the care of someone else, these are the people you want!” Elaine rested at home, where she was monitored through Royal Inland Hospital’s VIP Clinic (Vascular Improvement Clinic). Her heart function and other vitals could be monitored via a home health monitoring system – the results sent daily to the VIP clinic at RIH. If anything looked alarming, she would receive a call from a nurse immediately. “Dr. Chow and the staff of the VIP clinic are phenomenal. They are all so communicative and knowledgeable. I

was a very unexpected and complex patient, and Dr. Chow in particular was amazing at explaining my circumstances without causing me alarm. I always felt confident that I was in great hands.” After a month at RIH, Elaine and Brent were able to take their babies home for the first time. Today, the boys are thriving and things are looking up for Elaine. She recently had an echocardiogram – a test to check her heart function. It is up to 50% and is expected to continue increasing. She will continue to be monitored by the VIP clinic and Dr. Chow.

RIH Foundation’s Give & Grow Scholarships

RIH Foundation’s Give and Grow Scholarship program, now in its second year, biannually awards bursaries up to $1,000 to staff members for participation in courses, conferences, and workshops. The resulting advanced job knowledge, skills, and qualifications ultimately contribute to excellence in patient care.

Ashley-Rae, 25, an employee at Royal Inland Hospital since May, 2012 was a recent scholarship recipient. Currently, Ashley works in both the Health Information Management and Staffing Services departments at RIH while going to school full-time for a Human Service Diploma. Her goal is to get her Bachelor of Social Work and become a social worker at our hospital. This scholarship will create a positive impact on Ashley’s personal and professional development by helping her to develop

a new career within our hospital. Ashley would like to express her appreciation for the opportunity she has been given to focus less on financially supporting her education and more on her courses. The Scholarship program is partially funded by RIH staff donations and private support including the Chaney Family Foundation. Our generous donors are helping Ashley advance her career, and give back by supporting others in the community.

Volunteers Critical to Event Success With the construction of the Clinical Services Building, we knew we had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hold the Royal Affair here at the hospital. The Royal Affair is a top secret event, and is always held in a non-traditional space. But planning it in an ever-changing construction zone was unlike anything else we had experienced before! Interior Health and Bird Construction were incredibly supportive in allowing us to hold the event in the parkade, although we’re pretty sure they must have been questioning our choice of venue along the way. But, they had not met our incredible volunteer committee who can seemingly make anything possible! The event is not a typical gala. Each year the theme and location are kept top secret,

and guests do not know what to expect. Its set-up is designed for mingling and moving The Royal Affair is only throughout the venue to enjoy elements of made possible because of surprise as the guests please.
