Road to Adventure brings you a guide to the latest and greatest in off- and onroad models for touring the Thompson Valley this fall, from innovations in electric vehicles and heavy-duty trucks to the newest durable speedsters to rip through the mud.

Check in with the Kamloops 4X4 Club and the Kamloops Snowmobile Association for group runs, routes and backcountry cleanup days.

When the snow hits, make sure motorized toys are ready for harsh weather with Road to Adventure’s winterization tips.

Kamloops is home to breathtaking hoodoos, crisp flowing river water and a skyline that will take all your senses on a ride.

The area is known for some of the best highway routes in the province — quiet, well-maintained highway corridors with plentiful rest areas and scenic viewscapes.

Tourism Kamloops compiled these top routes starting and ending in Kamloops, guaranteed to showcase the best of the area:

Pursuit of the Gold Rush

A 513-kilometre route with lots of twisty mountain roads, great stopping points and incredible vistas along part of the original Gold Rush Trail.

This route will take approximately six-and-ahalf hours circling from Kamloops through to 100 Mile, Cache Creek, Merritt and back to the city centre.

Thompson Shuswap Expedition

A 270-kilometre trek featuring gently winding roads with views of pristine rivers and lakes, plus stops for the world-renowned

Armstrong cheese.

This journey is approximately three hours and 30 minutes travelling from Kamloops through the communities of Westwold, Armstrong and Salmon Arm, looping back to Kamloops.

Centre of the Universe Loop

Just under 200 kilometres of long stretches of canyon-carving roads and opportunities to explore the Balancing Rock, Deadman Falls and the Centre of the Universe.

This four-and-a-halfhour route is one of Tourism Kamloops’ dual sport routes and is also perfect for 4x4 vehicles.

Explorers will head out from Kamloops to Criss Creek, on to Vidette and back home with tonnes of awesome memories.

Hot Springs Adventure

For a longer weekend trip, try this 629-kilometre riding route looping through Vernon, Nakusp, Revelstoke and back through Salmon Arm to Kamloops.

The route totals nine hours and 40 minutes, but take some time to explore the hot spring stops in

Nakusp and at Halcyon Hot Springs along the way.

Road trip apps

Today’s drivers are conditioned to find the most affordable gas prices around.

The GasBuddy app makes it easy to do just that, as users can share gas prices in their community, which fellow drivers can then peruse to find the most affordable filling stations along their driving routes.

Drivers can even enter their city or postal code to find the cheapest gas in their vicinity.

The BCAA app gives you easy access to services, including roadside assistance, member savings TripTik mobile, insurance information and automotive information like CAA approved auto repair locations.

Both members and nonmembers can use TripTik for maps and directions to lodging, restaurants, local events and campgrounds.

Members get savings on everything from hotels to restaurants.

Winter conditions

Road and weather conditions change quickly during winter.

The Ministry of Transportation advises drivers be prepared to adjust their driving behaviour to match the conditions and address potential hazards.

On average, each year in B.C., the number of casualty crashes due to driving too fast for conditions doubles in December compared to October — approximately 236 crashes in December compared to approximately 117 in October, according to police reported data.

Drivers are likely to encounter winter weather in October on most B.C. highway passes.

Many sections of highway require winter tires from Oct. 1 to March 31.

Should drivers disobey winter tire regulations, they could be turned around by RCMP or CVSE. Slow down to a safe speed and obey posted speed limits are for ideal conditions.

Snowmobile club has advocated for organized riding for more than 20 years The Kamloops Snowmobile Association (KSA) has been around for upwards of 20 years, helping advocate for organized snowmobiling in the Thompson Valley.

The local club is a member of the B.C. Snowmobile Federation, the provincial body that overseas regional groups.

Membership director Brian Reeves said the KSA promotes safe and environmentally friendly practices and maintains a large trail network.

“We like to work with the government as far as land use, we take care of areas that are environmentally sensitive and regulate the times they can be used safely,” he said.

The Porcupine Meadows Provincial Park, for example, is a non-motorized area but the club is allowed to operate snowmobiles between December and April as long as certain criteria are met.

It’s just one example of the work the association is doing to keep trails properly respected and open.

“We manage a lot of areas around Kamloops and a lot of people don’t realize it’s because of the Kamloops Snowmobile Association that these areas are open to snowmobiling,” Reeves said.

“If ever they come under scrutiny to be foreclosures, whether it has to do with caribou or some sort of environmentally sensitive reason, we are there to monitor the situation and make sure there are good reasons behind it before it’s closed.”

Members become a voice for organized snowmobiling in B.C. The membership is sitting around 170, but

Reeves said many more people are active through social media.

He said it’s never been more important to become a member.

“You hear about all these closures that are happening. It’s because there is not enough representation for us to keep active in that,” Reeves said.

“There’s a lot happening right now with organized snowmobiling.

“There might be some big changes coming up in the next year or two with the provincial bodies so it’s never been more important than now to become a member of a club.”

The KSA meets monthly on the third Thursday at 7 p.m. at the North Shore Community Centre, 542-730 Cottonwood Ave. The club’s annual raffle fundraiser is underway.

Prizes include a 2016 Polaris 570 ATV, a $2,500 gift certificate for RTR Performance and $1,000 cash from the KSA. Tickets are $20 each and 1,000 will be sold.

They are available for purchase at monthly meetings and at RTR Performance and Outlaw Motorsports.

Reeves said the association holds a number of family events throughout the year as well as poker runs and safety information sessions.

For those interested in touring the valley, The Tod Mountain (Sun Peaks) area snowmobile trails, and the Tranquille Lake/Porcupine Ridge area snowmobile

trails both have shelters, groomed trails and designated staging areas.

They are just some of the snowmobile trails in the Kamloops area.

Riders are encouraged to contact the KSA prior to their trip for updated information on riding, forestry activities, avalanche risks and conditions.

For The Snow

Tranquille Lake/ Porcupine meadows

Porcupine Meadows Provincial Park is accessible by snowmobile only from Dec. 15 to April 15 annually.

No other motorized access is allowed at any time. The area is accessed (40-minute drive from Kamloops) from the KSA Chalet at 31.5 kilometres on Sawmill Main forest service road (FSR) and through the Tranquille Lake area on trails groomed by the KSA. Trails within the Porcupine Meadows Park are not groomed by agreement. This area is managed under agreement with the KSA, provincial government and BC Parks.

Trails outside of the Porcupine Meadows Park are comprised of unplowed forest industry roads and registered snowmobile trails.

Porcupine Meadows is the highest elevation between Kamloops and 100 Mile House on the west side of the North Thompson River. There are two shelters maintained by the KSA, one just outside the park on the southern edge and an historic forestry fire lookout at the highest elevation.

Snowmobile routes in the Thompson Valley From page 5

Jamieson Creek

Jamieson Creek is just 30 minutes north of Kamloops on the west side of the North Thompson River.

The area is accessed via active forest industry roads and snowmobilers gain access to trails made up of unplowed roads and recreation trails to

numerous meadow complexes and lakes.

The area is isolated but easy riding.

Tod Mountain

Public access to this snowmobile trail system is through the Sun Peaks ski area village, a 45-minute drive from Kamloops. This area is managed under agreement with the KSA and provincial government

in co-operation with Sun Peaks.

The trails system extends from McGillivray Lake (1,400 metres) to the south to Mt. Leslie (1,835 metres) to the north.

There is access to the summit of Tod Mountain (2,133 metres) from the Old Horse Trail on the north east corner of Tod Mountain.

Accessing the Tod

Mountain alpine requires at least intermediate mountain riding skills. There are boundaries marked in the southern alpine on Tod Mountain defining the operational area of the Sun Peaks ski area which must be respected. The KSA maintains a shelter on the western flanks of Cahilty Mountain.

Trails are groomed

Tours and are made up of unplowed forest industry roads and recreation trails.

Lac Le Jeune

Located 20 minutes south of Kamloops, the Lac Le Jeune area snowmobile trails run towards the south and east of Lac Le Jeune.

The elevation is 1,300 metres to 1,680 metres. There are many other users in

the immediate area of Lac Le Jeune that must be respected, such as cross country ski trail systems and local residents. This area is managed by agreement with the KSA and provincial government.

Once you are far enough south of Lac Le Jeune conflicts are less of an issue.

The ungroomed trail system runs through picturesque rolling

plateau terrain on unplowed forest industry and ranching roads, through numerous meadow complexes, lakes and old forest fire burns.

Sightings of moose are common in this area and ice fishing is also popular. This area is also accessed through Edith Lake and Rossmore Lake.

“We live in a fourwheel-drive paradise.

“There’s rock, mud and trails all over the place. There are so many logging roads and trails around you can go from Kamloops to 100 Mile House without touching pavement.”

The club tries to organize at least three major runs per year and occasional day trips. It also organizes clean-ups in areas of the backcountry that see a lot of dumping.

hevrolet promised to offer the first affordable electric vehicle with up to 320 kilometres of range.

That promise will not only be met, but also exceeded when the 2017 Bolt EV goes on sale later this year.

With the vehicle’s US EPA-estimated range of 383 kilometres, owners can expect to go beyond their average daily driving needs — with plenty of range to spare — in the 2017 Bolt EV when charging regularly.

“Chevrolet showed the world the produc-

tion version Bolt EV earlier this year and in a few short months we’ve moved from that vision to a reality,” said GM North America president Alan Batey.

“The Bolt EV is a game changer for the electric car segment and it will start to become available at (U.S.) Chevrolet dealerships later this year.”

Batey said Bolt EV buyers won’t be able to find a better value for an all-electric, thrill-inducing ride offering plenty of range, cargo space, technology and safety features that make the Bolt EV a great package for any driver.

“While range is important, we knew Bolt EV owners would want more — more space and more power — and the Bolt EV

delivers,” said Bolt EV chief engineer Josh Tavel.

“Our team took special pride in optimizing every aspect of this vehicle, especially its impressive range and ride dynamics.”

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price has been set at $42,795 plus a $1,600 destination freight charge.

Pricing could be in the low 30s (plus the freight charge), after provincial incentives are applied to the purchase price.

“Value is a hallmark for Chevrolet and the pricing of the Bolt EV proves we’re serious about delivering the first affordable EV with plenty of range for our customers,” said Batey.

Bolt EV buyers will find range, cargo space, technology and

safety features standard in a vehicle that has crossover proportions.

The DC fast charging provision and the tire inflator kit are standard equipment.

The base LT trim starts at $42,795 and comes with standard features that include, Regen on Demand steering wheel paddle, rear vision camera, 10.2” diagonal colour touch-screen and Michelin self-sealing tires.

The top trim Premier includes all LT equipment plus additional standard features such as leather-appointed seats, front and rear heated seats, surround camera and rear camera mirror.

Winterizing101 Prepare vehicles for harsh weather

A

s the seasons change, motorists must take steps to safeguard their vehicles, especially when the season changes from fall to winter.

Each winter, many vehicles are subjected to subzero temperatures, snowfall and icy roads, and such conditions can take their toll on vehicles over time.

Taking steps to prepare vehicles for winter weather is a vital step that can make cars and trucks safer for drivers and their passengers.

Battery

Old batteries should

be replaced before winter begins.

Without a strong, properly functioning battery, engines cannot turn over.

Most batteries last between three and five years.

However, extreme cold can compromise batteries, especially those that have been around awhile.

Batteries are made up of acid and water, and cold temperatures can freeze the water, thereby affecting battery performance.

According to AAA’s Automotive Research Center, at 0 C (32 F), the average battery loses 35 per cent of its strength.

Newer batteries can be protected by starting the

vehicle each day to warm up and recharge the battery.

Let the car run for at least 10 minutes if you cannot take an extended drive.

Exterior maintenance

Keeping a car waxed and sealed can help maintain a durable exterior finish.

This includes not only the paint, but the rubber and vinyl parts of the car’s exterior.

Winter is a good time to switch to a heavy-duty synthetic wax that can shield against water and road salts.

High-quality sealants can be used on bumpers, trim and rubber door seals as added protection.

Speak with an automotive retailer or even the car

dealership if you are unsure which products will make your car’s parts most durable for winter weather.

Do not stop washing your car just because the weather is cold.

Slushy, wet roads and snow-melting salts can speed up the formation of rust or other decay on the undercarriage of the vehicle.

These materials will need to be periodically cleaned off.

Flush the underside of the vehicle whenever possible, taking advantage of any dry, slightly warmer days.

Tire pressure

According to the automotive retailer Pep Boys, vehicle tires lose a pound

of air pressure for every 10-degree drop in temperature. Many modern cars will alert to changes in air pressure and drivers should be diligent in maintaining the proper tire pressure.

Fuel economy and handling ability can decline when tires are not inflated properly. Tires can be refilled at many gas stations for little cost.

Wipers

Visibility is key in hazardous weather conditions, and keeping the windshield clean is a priority.

This means ensuring there is enough windshield wiper fluid in the car and that it is a product that will not freeze.

Wiper blades can freeze and crack in the winter.

Older blades may be more susceptible to damage.

It’s a worthy investment to replace existing wiper blades at the start of each winter.

When vehicles are parked, pull the wipers off of the windshield to safeguard them from sticking and cracking.

Cold weather requires drivers to amp up their vehicle maintenance routines.

Consult with a mechanic or automotive retailer for more ideas and products that can help your vehicles operate safely and efficiently this winter.

Readying your RV for winter storage • Step 1: Drain the system Drain your black water and then your grey water at a sani-dump.

Next, drain your cold and hot water line drains. Be sure to put the plugs back on after draining or your antifreeze will drain out.

Now it’s time to drain your fresh water tank. Drain your hot water heater. First, alleviate pressure by opening up the hot tap in the kitchen or the relief valve on the water heater itself.

The two main brands of hot water heater are Atwood and Suburban. If you have an Atwood heater, you’ll need a 7/8” socket with an extension. If you have a Suburban, you’ll need to remove the anode rod with a 1” 1/16 socket. Let the water drain out.

• Step 2: Bypass your hot water heater.

First off, you don’t need to put antifreeze in the hot water heater, fresh water tank,or grey and black water holding tanks.

It’s the waterlines themselves you need to worry about because there’s no room to expand. Your heater will have a water line in the bottom — that’s the cold water going in. A hot water line comes out on the top, which fills your hot water pipes.

If there’s a middle pipe connecting those two water lines, that’s the bypass that prevents antifreeze from entering the water heater.

Most units have this bypass already installed -— usually a one-, two- or three-bypass valve system.

With a three-valve system, make sure the valves on the cold and hot water lines are turned perpendicular to the line itself. Then turn the valve on the bypass so it’s parallel to the bypass line. On a two-valve system, turn both valves to that they’re perpendicular to the cold and hot water lines, and parallel to the bypass line. With a one-valve system, all you need to do is close the valve so it appears perpendicular to the cold water line.

Step 3: Connect antifreeze to the water pump. You’ll need to set up a temporary water pump bypass to get the antifreeze into your plumbing system. Have a few towels handy in case of dribbles, and disconnect the water pump from the fresh water tank

on the water pump side.

Screw in the temporary bypass to the pump side, then put the other end into a jug of RV antifreeze. In total, you’ll probably need two jugs of antifreeze.

Step 4: Run all water outlets.

Make sure the outside drain plug and all water taps are closed, and then turn on the water pump.

Run everything individually.

Run your hot tap in the kitchen until you see antifreeze and let it run for a second. Do the same with the cold tap. Run the hot and cold in the bathroom sink, then run the hot and cold in the tub, and make sure you run the shower head until you see antifreeze.

Flush the toilet until you see antifreeze. Pour about a cup full of

antifreeze down all drains. If you have an outside shower or taps, make sure you run them on the hot and cold side until you see antifreeze.

Lastly, turn off your water pump.

Step 5: Fill check-valve line (where you hook up your RV to city water). It’s very important to make sure your water pump is in the off position. Remove the screen attached to your city water hookup.

Push in on the check valve inside (some water will spurt out) and hold it down until you see some antifreeze trickle back down that line.

The last step is a crucial one, or you’ll be kicking yourself come springtime. Go back to the water pump and reconnect it.

Polaris RZR recently introduced the RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS, declaring the release of the 2017 side-byside vehicles “another new standard in razorsharp performance.”

“Featuring a new ProStar Turbo H.O. engine that unleashes 168 horsepower — the most power ever offered on a factory side-by-side — the vehicles offer 15 per cent more power than last year’s models and 9 per cent more than anything else on the market,” the company announced.

To match the horsepower upgrade,

Polaris said the 2017 RZR XP Turbo models feature high-capacity cooling and a stronger driveline.

They also call the upgrades a significant improvement from 2016 models.

“The high-capacity cooling includes a new, more powerful, variable-speed, brushless fan coupled with a new, 40 per cent larger, high-flow front grill and a 20 per cent larger engine radiator.

“The new cooling ensures the engine can breathe for maximum power delivery.”

The RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS boast the

most premium suspension and, for agility, the vehicles feature front and re-tuned rear stabilizer bars to “virtually eliminate” body roll for flatter cornering.

For quicker steering, both vehicles have a new 1.5-turn steering rack, paired with standard electronic power steering (EPS).

The RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS’ braking performance ensures precision stopping.

BRP introducing new off-road vehicle every six months Can-Am Maverick X3 latest in company’s promise to release new side-by-side vehicles twice a year BRP unveiled its flagship performance side-by-side vehicle, the Can-Am Maverick X3, in August at its annual dealer meeting in Orlando.

Putting a heavy duty pickup truck through its paces

FCA’s 2017 lineup includes the Ram Power Wagon, which boasts a number of off-road specific enhancements.

Here’s the thing with writing about trucks — especially trucks from the extensive and exhausting lineup offered in FCA’s Ram family — there are literally, one million variations.

Between cab styles, powertrains, packages and trims, the Ram-fam has something to offer anyone who is serious about their work (and play) vehicles; with a list of selections and options that practically ensure that there will be no two exactly alike on the roads when the 2017 lineup becomes available this fall.

I got to drive a cross section of them at FCA’s proving grounds in Chelsea, Mich., on a variety of closedcourse roads and terrains (including a really entertaining off-road

course the company uses for testing all their 4×4 products, which would quickly weed out anything that isn’t up to the challenges of driving through water, or up a flight of wooden steps installed in the middle of the Michigan woods).

We’ll narrow it down to just a couple: the Power Wagon and OffRoad Package of the 2500 series.

What worked to be a good thing for me is that I put off driving the trucks until the afternoon portion of my day at the Chelsea facility; and just about lunchtime a cloudburst hit the grounds hard.

(Incidentally, have you ever experienced a true cloudburst?

I honestly never had, in fact I have never seen rain like that outside of maybe Haida Gwaii — one minute everything was fine, and the next it was like riot police had turned a firehose

on we, the assembled media. It was pretty hilarious, actually; everyone scrambling for cover and event staff frantically trying to close the sunroofs and get the tops of the convertible vehicles up).

Anyway, the rainblast only lasted a few minutes, and left the courses in a suitably wet-and-slippery condition that helped the vehicles show off their terrain-handling abilities in some truly challenging circumstances.

I used a 2500 4×4 heavy duty with offroad package on the backcountry course (FCA tells that what is new for the upcoming model year is that the package is available on the whole 2500 lineup, restricted only by cab style).

The offroad package basically adds cuttingedge Bilstein monotube shock absorbers and a limited-slip differential to the truck in

addition to its underbody skid plates and tow hooks.

I had one of FCA’s professionals with me for an orientation lap around the course, who was really helpful in instructing me on the use of the vehicles terrain-selection modes and demonstrating the downhilldescent control on steep declines.

It was also an opportunity to appreciate the interior of the mega cab of the 2500.

FCA boasts it is the largest cab in the segment, and it shows off excellent space throughout (I rode around in the back taking photos out the window for a while) along with excellent upholstery and attention to detail.

While it is a thoroughly capable truck in the rough, no question about it, but also does well on the highway and provides a ride that, while notice-

ably bouncier than the lower-slung Jeeps that were also on hand in Chelsea (particularly the smaller 2017 Cherokee) is all-round comfortable and suitably passenger-oriented.

The Power Wagon version of the 2500 brought a similar experience, as you might expect (neither truck struggled with any of the tests) with its very similar level of 4×4 equipment.

Bilstein shocks were also present, lockable front and rear axles and the addition of a

front-mounted winch rated to handle up to 12,000 lbs.

The crew cab version I used also brought a decent amount (although not ‘mega’) of interior roominess.

In fact, many of the overall specs for both vehicles are likewise identical — the ones I drove employed the company’s 6.4 litre, V8 Hemi engine, outputting 410 horses and 429 lb.-ft. of torque and equipped with a fuel-saving cylinder deactivation function that purports to shut

down four of the cylinders when the extra power isn’t required (i.e., when not carrying a load).

To my untrained eye, it almost appears that a buyer could select either Ram, just based on your preference in badging and decals, and expect it to serve extremely well as a work (or play) threequarter ton hauler.

There are a lot more, of course, in FCA’s 2017 stable.
