Health Minister Terry Lake is hoping two new walk-in clinics will be open for patients by January.

The clinics — one in the North Shore Health Centre at 370 Tranquille Rd. and the other in the former YMCA/YWCA space in Northills Centre — will be turn-key operations, Lake said, ready for medical staff to start work and not have to set up their clinic.

It’s part of a four-point strategy Lake announced at the mall yesterday, one designed to address the lack of family physicians in the city and, in particular, on the North Shore.

It’s anticipated the two clinics will bring from five to seven doctors to Kamloops.

Other steps include enhanced targeted recruitment of family doctors and a new nurse-inpractice program to increase capacity at existing offices and clinics. There will also be recruitment of doctors from the province’s practice-ready

primary-care centres.

The recruitment plan would see the program altered from the way it works now. It was designed to link doctors trained and certified in other countries with B.C. doctors until they’re familiar with the system in the province. They are then set up in rural areas that need more general practitioners.

For Kamloops, Lake said, the plan is to recruit five from the program and bring them to the city.

Nurse-practitioners will also be recruited.

Community-care teams will also be established to focus on frail elderly patients with complex medical conditions and for those with mental-health and substance-use concerns. The clinic for seniors will be at the mall location; the mental-health and substance abuse clinic will be at the Tranquille location.

Lake said the issue of seniors and their health concerns will be addressed immediately as work begins on the new clinics.

The Interior Health Authority will be establishing a protocol for them to get linked to the ser-

vices they require quickly.

A special HealthLink BC phone number will also be established for Kamloops.

Seniors and other people looking for a family doctor can call it. Those looking for a doctor will be put on a wait list and, once a primary-care practice opens, be referred.

Seniors will be triaged over the phone by the nurses answering the line and given referrals to services.

It’s expected phone number will be in place by the end of the month.

Calling the situation in Kamloops unique, Lake said the plan is the result of collaboration between his ministry, Doctors of B.C., the Interior Health Authority and the Kamloops Division of Family Practice.

If the program works here, Lake said, it could provide a template for other larger communities struggling with a declining number of family physicians.

It could also see a similar clinic opened on the South Shore next year.

Changing ways of practising medicine Would-be doctors are learning to practise medicine in a way that is different from past generations of graduates, said Chris Mazurkewich, CEO of the Interior Health Authority — and it’s helping define how the provision of medicine will move forward.

Two general practitioners — doctors Wayne Dong and Sher Muhammad — are closing their Tranquille Medical Centre practices this month and the likelihood is that interdisciplinary care will fill the gap.

Mazurkewich said, and it’s what many of the graduates of UBC want to do when they complete their studies and begin their careers.

Dr. Chip Bantock, chairman of the Kamloops Division of Family Practice board, outlined his own work day at yesterday’s press conference to announce changes to the health care in Kamloops.

His day started with rounds at Royal Inland Hospital, then he headed to his practice to see patients. He left at 9:45 a.m. to take part in the 10 a.m. press conference and, once it was completed, would return to his

practice, seeing patients during his lunch hour due to the break in the morning, attend a meeting tonight and, eventually, go home.

New doctors see other benefits in the interdisciplinary team approach, Mazurkewich said.

It provides one point of contact for several health resources, shares the costs — which is important because many graduate with substantial student-loan debt — and gives balance in the amount of time they must put into seeing each patient.

Mark Fromberg, told the province’s Select Standing Committee on Health that the province needs to make it easier for general practitioners to create interdisciplinary teams of medical professionals.

Fromberg said there are too many barriers.

If that could be resolved, the team approach could help resolve the doctor crisis, he said, because other medical professionals could deal with their own specific area of health care with patients, leaving the GP free to deal with those who really need to see a doctor.

EFFECT OF A SEPARATION ON SPOUSAL WILLS Have you and your spouse ever separated and then reconciled? If you answered “Yes”, then you may need to revise/update your Wills.

In a typical spousal relationship, the husband and wife make Wills, appointing the other as Executor and bequeathing the estate to the surviving spouse.

However, the law recently changed to say that separation invalidates/cancels the gift to the spouse and the appointment of the spouse as Executor. The arraignment of a former highprofile Kamloops police officer accused of trafficking cocaine while employed by the RCMP has again been delayed — this time at the request of the Crown.

Randi Love did not appear personally in Kamloops provincial court yesterday morning for a brief hearing adjourning her arraignment

to next week.

The 40-year-old is facing three counts of trafficking cocaine stemming from a trio of alleged incidents on separate dates in June 2015.

At the time, Love was on injury leave from her job as an RCMP constable.

Police launched an investigation into Love’s actions in the weeks that followed.

She submitted her resignation to the RCMP in October 2015.

Love made headlines in 2013 when she

testified at the fraud trial of her former boyfriend.

Trent Wessner, also an RCMP constable, was convicted of bilking Costco out of $400 based largely

on Love’s testimony.

Wessner left policing following the conviction.

In 2008, Love worked as the mediarelations officer at the Kamloops RCMP detachment, acting as the de facto face of the city’s police.

Charges were laid against Love in May. To this point, she has had a lawyer appear on her behalf for each of her court dates.

Love is not in custody. She is due back in court on Oct. 13.

Mounties stamp out mini-crime spree In the end, the Mounties got their man and woman — signed, sealed and delivered.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, the Clearwater Canada Post office was burgled, with several items stolen, including a large variety of stamps.

On Wednesday, Kamloops RCMP received a report of a woman attempting to sell stamps in Savona.

Police responded and arrested a man and woman while recovering a variety of stamps that were traced to the Clearwater post office break and enter.

Police also connected the couple’s rental car to the attempted burglary on Tuesday at the Clinton government liquor store.

Cpl. Steven Schenkeveld said the woman initially gave police a false name and was eventually identified. She had an outstanding warrant for her arrest. Schenkeveld said the man also had a warrant for his arrest as he failed to attend court earlier that morning.

Both remain in custody and are facing charges related to the crime spree that spread from Clearwater to Clinton.

Not surprisingly this law is catching people off guard as they attempt to deal with their deceased spouse’s estate, only to find out that a temporary separation years ago has now excluded them from their spouse’s Will.

SD73 chair questions ministry’s responses DALE BASS

While the province’s education minister has raised the idea of firing the Vancouver School Board (VSB), a local trustee is wondering why it hasn’t happened already.

Denise Harper, chair of the Kamloops-Thompson board of education, said she would be “heartsick” if senior administration in School District 73 all took sick or stress leave at the same time, as has happened in Vancouver.

The Vancouver board is being investigated by WorkSafeBC after allegations were raised about a toxic work environment.

Six senior administrators are on medical leave and the ministry has been told one of the factors is the way they are being treated by some of the board’s trustees.

Harper wondered why Education Minister Mike Bernier has not taken action given the Vancouver board has been the source of ongoing issues between itself and the government.

Earlier this year, it rejected a proposal from Bernier’s office to help it balance its budget, which is a legislative requirement.

At that time in June, Bernier said he wouldn’t

immediately fire the board, instead ordering a full forensic audit.

Bernier has also questioned the board’s recent decision to suspend a process that would see 11 schools closed.

That move came one week after the Vancouver board voted to go forward with public consultations.

Harper wondered why Bernier has not taken action yet when, after the NorthOkanagan-Shuswap school board — School District 83 — got into financial difficulty and asked the ministry for help, the response was to fire the board and appoint a new single trustee.

She said that board “got into a pickle” when it transferred more than $10 million from its operating fund to pay for the cost of a new administration building.

At that time, the NorthOkanagan-Shuswap board was also cutting programs and discussing school closures.

Bernier fired the board after receiving a report from a special advisor who looked at the board’s governance.

“Why the difference in treatment?” Harper asked.

“It’s confusing to me and it’s unsettling to trustees because there seems to be such a huge difference in how this is being handled.

“Certainly, there were deficiencies in Salmon Arm [SD83], but the fact is they asked for help. It startles me they were replaced.”

The Vancouver school board is not a member of the B.C. School Trustees Association.

SD73 is a member.

Harper said she can’t imagine SD73 senior staff taking an en masse medical leave “because we have so much respect for them.”

SD73 superintendent Alison Sidow echoed Harper’s sentiment, saying she is grateful “to be working in a district where there are such positive relations between senior management and the school board.”

A spokesman for Bernier told KTW the NorthOkanagan-Shuswap school board was replaced with the administrator because the report he received highlighted that “this board is not functioning well and the situation would appear to be deteriorating rapidly.

“Remember that the special-advisor report was conducted at the request of the board, and after a number of trustees had resigned,” the spokesman said.

He also noted the Vancouver school board forensic audit is not complete.

The union representing workers at Highland Valley is angry some of its members have been threatened with discipline for volunteering at the Kamloops Food Bank.

United Steelworkers Local 7619 president Kyle Wolff said the group went on a union leave — which means the Steelworkers would reimburse Highland Valley for the lost time so they could do the volunteer work.

“Some of them were also there on some of their own time, too,” Wolff said.

“But we’re in bargaining and this is just petty bullying tactics by a mega corporation.”

Peter Martell, Teck Highland Valley’s environment and community affairs manager, could not be reached for comment by KTW press deadline.

“It’s silly,” Wolff said, adding his union representative asked him to write down all the charitable work the union members do “and it’s a long list.”

“This bullying may be effective in threatening workers in developing countries where Teck operates copper mines, but it won’t work here,” said Wolff.

“Teck may believe this is the way big global corporations are supposed to act, but it’s fundamentally un-Canadian.

“Whether it’s through our contributions to local food banks, the United Way or through our Steelworkers Humanity Fund, our commitment to our neighbours is steadfast and unwavering,” noted Wolff.

“It’s sad we can’t say the same for Teck Corporation.”

Wolff pointed to another disagreement between the union and employer — who began bargaining a new contract in August — that has seen two union bargaining committee members docked pay for leaving bargaining for a few hours.

Again, Wolff said, Steelworkers reimburses the wages to Teck for bargaining time.

Eriksonn gave his notice in August after finding his run-down two-bedroom apartment in Sahali, where he was splitting the $1,000 monthly cost, too expensive. But his search for a more affordable place turned up little.

That’s when he looked in his friend’s

closet — and decided it would make a bedroom.

“I live in that,” Eriksonn said of his new digs. “I couldn’t find a place.”

While the closet is a little cosy, the rent ,at $300 a month, is a good deal. He shares the suite in the downtown house with three friends.

The NDP is hoping to tap into stories like those told by Eriksonn yesterday at a small housing round table hosted by the party.

critic Shane Simpson said renters are being pushed into desperate situations in many markets.

“It might be students, seniors or others with modest incomes,” Simpson said of the party’s focus on affordability in its election platform.

“They’re looking for a place to live. The most glaring thing is we’re not supplying that.”

Simpson expects the tight turnaround — before the May 9 election — will be satisfied by government purchasing pre-sale condominium units.

But he said the rush is not good planning.

“I worry about bad decisions when you’re trying to do this in six months,” he said.

The NDP Opposition under leader John Horgan is making hous-

ing affordability a major issue in the election campaign.

The party has yet to announce its concrete housing plan, however.

Simpson said his party will take the $500 million designated by the Liberals and use it “in a different way.”

He also said raising minimum wage to $15 a hour — about $30,000 annually versus today’s $22,000 — is part of the solution.

“That’s about $700 a month. Think about where that could go,” Simpson said, adding the vast majority of it will be spent in local markets helping boost economic growth.

Various provincial governments have tried myriad ways to fix what ails the health-care system and yesterday’s announcement of two team-based clinics coming to the North Shore is the latest idea.

Trumped-up connection

I

wonder if Paul Lyons is still in Kamloops.

If he is, I wonder how he feels about the remarkable hot mess that is the Donald Trump presidential campaign.

Lyons, after all, is perhaps the one Kamloopsian with the closest connection to the Republican presidential candidate.

In 2007, The Donald read a story by Dave Eagles in Kamloops This Week. The story led to Trump giving Lyons a $1,000 gift.

Eagles, the longtime KTW photographer, had taken an interesting snapshot of life on the Kamloops streets.

There was Lyons sitting on a sidewalk with his back against a wall, which also supported his metal crutches.

On his right were two bags of belongings. On his left were three stuffed animals.

In his hand was a book he was devouring: Trump’s The Art of the Deal. Lyons had scooped it out of a “free” bin at the nowclosed and much-missed At Second Glance secondhand book store.

The contrast of a homeless man reading a book of advice from a multimillionaire caught Eagles’ eye and made for a striking photo and short profile.

KTW reader Audrey Karpuk then clipped out the story and mailed it to Trump headquarters in New York City.

Soon thereafter, the man who could be president mailed a cheque for a thousand bucks to KTW, to be passed on to Lyons.

Trump was then on the phone, talking to KTW reporter Dale Bass about why he felt the

Trump said Lyons’ story touched him — and not just because of his choice in reading material.

“Sure, I like the book,” Trump quipped.

“The writer wrote beautifully.

But, to be honest, I just wanted to help him out. You know, you work hard and it’s not easy sometimes.

“This guy seemed to me to be trying so hard. It was really interesting, he really seemed to be trying to figure out life.

“He looked like a really good guy.”

Trump was all complimentary and encouraging back in 2007, which is an obvious contrast to his bombast and agitation of this campaign.

He mentioned Lyons was trying hard, reading the book, trying to figure out life.

“He looked like a really good guy, and Dave Eagles took a great picture, and it all added up, and I just wanted to do this. And it’s a good paper.”

Fast forward to 2016 and we get this from Trump: • “I’ve said if Ivanka weren’t

my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her.”

• “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”

• “It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep.” (quoting Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini).

• “We won with poorly educated. I love the poorly educated.”

• “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters, OK? It’s, like, incredible.”

Back in 2007, Trump was still boastful, but his shocking arrogance wasn’t as front and centre.

His claims of extravagant wealth have long been called into question, which may be why some readers of KTW nine years ago were wondering why he sent Lyons a measly $1,000 when he was a self-proclaimed billionaire.

Perhaps last week’s bombshell New York Times exposé of Trump’s tax returns answers the question.

This Sunday, many eyes will be glued to the TV as Trump and Hillary Clinton square off in the second of three presidential debates.

Trump was impressive in the first 20 minutes of the inaugural debate, then crashed badly.

It will again be a train wreck and it will again produce big ratings — as watching a disaster unfold is irresistible.

BEARS WERE KILLED BY HUMAN STUPIDITY Editor: On the morning of Sept 22, I watched, with much sadness, as a cub fell dead from a nearby evergreen tree. Soon to follow was a sibling and the mother.

They died needlessly.

A reported bear means a dead bear. The conservation officers were responding to a complaint or complaints.

I have lived in Rayleigh for many years and the bears have came down from the hills every fall, as have other wildlife.

After all, this is their range and has been long before houses were built. To my knowl-

edge, there has never been a safety issue arise in more than 30 years.

Normally, bears are naturally averse to human contact.

Ultimately, it is not a bear problem. It is actually a human problem. What causes the problem is the lack of intellect of people who leave attractants out.

The Kamloops Bear Aware Program tells us not to put garbage cans out until pickup day, to pick our fruit, to not leave any attractants out.

So, three bears lost their lives because people did not secure their garbage until pickup

day and some brilliant person had a freezer full of food stored outside.

Those people invite the bears, then make a panic call to conservation officers when the bears show up.

You have to be kidding me.

Too many people have the mindset that wildlife is disposable. We all must realize it falls to us humans to care for our valuable wildlife.

Wildlife need our compassion, not overreaction.

COLLEGE PRINCIPLES ALLOW PHYSICIAN FLEXIBILITY Editor: Re: Linda Davidson’s letter of Sept. 14 (‘College policy makes patients suffer’) regarding the College’s new standard entitled Safe Prescribing of Drugs with Potential for Misuse/Diversion.

The situation described by Davidson regarding her husband is distressing and we regret he has had such a challenging time trying

to manage his pain.

It might be helpful for Davidson, her husband and other patients to know the College’s standard acknowledges the appropriate role of pharmacotherapy in the context of active cancer, palliative, nursing home and end-of-life care.

All of the principles contained in the standard were deliberately written in general terms, allow-

ing flexibility so physicians can use their own bedside clinical judgment and determine the best course of action for their patient.

Nothing in the standard prohibits or interferes with the ability of pain specialists or other physicians to safely and effectively care for their patients.

As the regulator, the College’s mandate is to investigate any

report of physicians misapplying the standard to the detriment of patients.

Patients who have concerns about the care they have received by physicians are encouraged to contact the College directly.

WESTERN CANADA THEATRE REMAINS IN GOOD HANDS Editor: I have spent my life in theatre and one major highlight was as founding artistic director of Western Canada Theatre.

people who have supported Western Canada Theatre and the Sagebrush.

James MacDonald is an excellent choice to succeed him. James is a man of the theatre, experienced on all aspects, intelligent and friendly.

LOCAL NEWS Graham Clarke Roofing workers scale the steep roof of St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral as new shingles are added to the landmark building. The work will help protect pricless artifacts inside the church at Fourth Avenue and Nicola Street. The church was originally built in 1888 across from city hall. In 1924, it was moved, piece by piece, to its current location.

he skeleton of wooden beams beneath the ceiling above the nave of St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in downtown Kamloops is more than 125 years old.

What’s on top of it, though, will soon be shiny and new.

The old church with a congregation of about 400 at Fourth Avenue and Nicola Street is in the process of getting a new roof. Ken Gray, the church’s dean, said the work was urgent.

“We’ve had a lot of damage that’s occurred over recent years,” he said.

“We’ve taken appropriate mitigating measures up to this point, but the roof had to be replaced before the snow flies.”

Workers have been replacing the

roof since Sept. 26. Contractor Graham Maclaughlin with Clarke Roofing Services said it’s a unique job.

“We don’t usually have jobs where we work with the public so much, closing down alleyways,” he said.

“And it’s a steep roof. There are steep roofs out there, but this is a particularly steep roof.”

Gray has only been dean at St. Paul’s for a few months, following an 11-year stint at a church on Vancouver Island, but he has a special connection to the building itself.

“It’s a strong sense of intimacy — a very intimate building,” he said. “My wife and I were married in this church 29 years ago.”

The building is also special to Elaine Parkes, who has been a member of St. Paul’s congregation since childhood.

She, too, was married in St. Paul’s and spends time filling in for parish staff when they are away.

Parkes is familiar with the history of the building.

It was built in 1888 about 10 blocks to the northwest.

“It was down on Victoria Street West,” Parkes said. “In 1924, it was moved to this location. I think they pulled it up by horses.

Back in that day, it would have been a major project.”

The 1888 structure makes up what is today the nave — the main body of the church filled with pews — but St. Paul’s Cathedral is a deceptively large facility.

In 1954, an extensive addition was built onto the church.

chapel, offices and a hall, with a large basement of rooms underneath.

The addition also changed something fundamental for churchgoers to St. Paul’s — it flipped the nave around.

With extra space, church leaders decided to expand the altar area and move it to the west end of the nave. What is now the entrance lobby used to be the altar.

Sitting in the parish office, Gray said financial support from the community has been key to replacing the church’s roof.

“It’s surpassed our goals so far,” he said.

“We are very encouraged by the support.

It’s about a $90,000 job and we have about half of that just from personal contributions.”

Maclaughlin said he expects the job to be done by mid-October.

‘What’s best in a pilot is when you listen’

Chase’s mayor is confident golf carts will be on the road next spring despite a freeze on the program announced by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Minister and KamloopsSouth Thompson MLA Todd Stone announced a two-year pilot program in the summer to allow properly equipped golf carts on residential streets in Chase and Qualicum. Motor Vehicle Act regulations were amended to allow the pilot.

But accompanying the pilot program was a reduced 30 km/h speed limit on designated streets

for all motor vehicles — something that rankled residents in automobiles.

“We’re not pausing because of negativity,” said Chase Mayor Rick Berigan, who is a proponent of the program for his village. “We do listen to the community, negative and positive.

What’s best in a pilot is when you listen.”

In a statement, Stone said the ministry was reacting to concern about reduced speeds on some roads.

“We have received a number of ideas and some concerns, most notably with respect to set-

ting 30 km/h maximum speeds on roads where these vehicles would travel,” he said.

Berigan said under the pilot, carts could only have traversed village streets for another three weeks before a winter prohibition on use of the electric vehicles. The winter period gives time to consider changes, including the 30 km/h maximum.

“The province has said they’re seriously looking at the 30 km/h limit and adjusting it to accommodate everyone,” he said. “I personally feel they can co-exist.”

RECORD-SETTING STUDIES APPROVED A record 73 research-study applications were approved

by Interior Health Authority in its last fiscal year, the majority of them at the University of British Columbia.

per cent more than the previous record set in the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

Teary RCMP commissioner apologizes, announces harassment suit settlement JIM BRONSKILL

OTTAWA — RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson delivered an abject apology yesterday to hundreds of current and former female officers and employees who were subjected to alleged incidents of bullying, discrimination and harassment dating back 42 years.

Paulson made the apology as he announced the settlement of two class-action lawsuits stemming from the harassment allegations, some of which date back to September 1974. He said the federal government has earmarked $100 million for payouts.

“To all the women, I stand humbly before you today and solemnly offer our sincere apology,’’ an emotional Paulson told a news conference in Ottawa.

“You came to the RCMP wanting to personally contribute to your community and we failed you. We hurt you.

For that, I am truly sorry.’’

Paulson said the settlements would provide financial compensation for the women and pave the way to end potential class-action lawsuits brought forward by former RCMP members Janet Merlo and Linda Gillis Davidson.

There is no cap on the potential cost of the payouts, he added.

Paulson was joined at the news conference by the plaintiffs, as well as Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale and Labour Minister MaryAnn Mihychuk.

“The impact this has had on those who have experienced this shameful conduct cannot — must not — be solely understood as an adverse workplace condition for which they must be compensated,’’ Paulson said.

“For many of our women, this harassment has hurt them mentally and physically. It has destroyed relationships and marriages, and even whole families have suffered as a result. Their very lives have been affected.’’

Merlo took the podium

after Paulson was finished, calling it “a great day for the RCMP’’ and thanking the commissioner on behalf of the other female members represented in the lawsuits.

“They just wanted it to be a better place to work,’’ Merlo said. “For them, I’m really thankful that today finally arrived.’’

As she left the podium, she embraced Paulson, who wiped tears from his eyes as he sat back down.

“I love my flag, I love my country and I loved my job; I left way too early,’’ added Davidson, who also extended her thanks to the commissioner.

“I will continue to stand up and right the wrongs if I can,’’ she said. “We are, we were and we always will be your greatest asset.’’

Hundreds of former and serving female Mounties and civilian members have said they were victims of harassment, bullying and assault dating back to when women first joined the force.

The settlement likely marks

the beginning of the end to a difficult episode in the force’s history, one that has haunted Paulson’s tenure as commissioner.

“Today’s announcement . . . closes the door on a deeply troubling and unfortunate period in the history of our national police force,’’ Goodale said.

“It is an encouraging moment, demonstrating a deep desire on the part of all parties to move forward in a positive and constructive manner — starting immediately.’’

Though neither of the two class actions has been certified, the settlement agreements will be submitted to the courts, paving the way for approval. There will be a deadline for signing on to the actions, which means it is too early to tell how many members might be compensated.

Merlo, whose proposed class-action suit was filed in B.C., said she experienced many instances of sexual harassment that left her with post-traumatic stress disorder.

OTTAWA — A report by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. says home sales in Vancouver were already slowing before the plunge in recent months in the wake of a new tax on foreign buyers.

In its housing market insight report into the preliminary impact of the foreign buyers tax, CMHC said it’s too early to

The housing agency says the drop in sales in August and September continued an already established trend, particularly at the higher end of the price range.

OTTAWA — A group of Iranian-Canadians is calling on the government to add a tough new element to its annual United Nations resolution on Iran’s dubious human rights record — a call for an international war crimes investigation.

The group, which calls itself Canadian Friends for a Democratic Iran, made the request yesterday at a news conference on Parliament Hill.

The group presented what it says is new evidence that shows complicity by senior Iranian government officials in a mass killing of 30,000

political prisoners in 1988 at the end of the Iran-Iraq war.

An audio recording from the era surfaced in August that implicates high-level members of the current Iranian regime, including the country’s justice minister, said Shahram Golestaneh, the group’s director.

Canada has taken the lead each year since 2003 in sponsoring a resolution at the UN condemning Iran’s humanrights record.

That was the year that Iranian-born, Canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi was tortured and killed in a Tehran prison after she was arrested for photographing a demonstration.

Now, Golestaneh’s group wants the government to up the ante by asking the UN to launch an investigation into the 1988 massacre as part of that annual resolution.

A trio of Conservative MPs joined Golestaneh’s group at the news conference and urged the government not to re-establish diplomatic relations with Iran.

The former Conservative government broke off ties with Iran in 2012, citing a lack of security for embassy staff, the country’s poor human-rights record and its support of terrorism.

“Normalizing relations with Iran before these individuals are held accountable is

completely unacceptable,’’ said Conservative MP Candice Bergen.

She said it’s unwise foreign policy on the part of Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion and Liberals.

The government has yet to re-open Canada’s embassy or allow Iranian diplomats back into Canada, but has said engaging countries that it disagrees with is not a sign that it approves of their nondemocratic policies.

Shahin Gobadi, a Parisbased dissident with the National Council of Resistance of Iran, acknowledged any call for a war crimes investigation would likely fall on deaf ears in Tehran.

About 200 assisted deaths under new law COLIN PERKEL

TORONTO — About 200 Canadians have received help killing themselves since legislation authorizing medically assisted suicide came into force in June, new figures obtained by The Canadian Press show, but those numbers do not paint the whole picture.

To date, 87 people have taken advantage of the law in Ontario, while the total in B.C. is 66, the provinces’ coroner’s

offices reported yesterday.

Alberta has tracked at least 23 deaths, Manitoba has had 12, while Saskatchewan has had fewer than five cases.

Figures from elsewhere were not immediately available.

But if an outline is beginning to emerge of demand across Canada for help in dying, a dearth of even basic information still exists.

For example, there are little data on how many people have requested help but have been refused, the medical conditions prompting such

requests, those who have made requests but changed their minds, and the number of people who have died before the request could be granted.

Even statistics on gender, age and where the deaths have occurred are elusive.

Shanaaz Gokool, CEO of Dying with Dignity Canada, said it’s impossible to discern clearly what’s happening across the country, or how the legislation is being applied.

“It’s very difficult to assess what is going on,’’ Gokool

said. “No one’s doing this in a very systematic way.

“The numbers don’t tell us enough.’’

In Manitoba, more than 60 people have requested assisted death, a spokeswoman for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said.

Most were turned down, although it was not clear why.

The latest Alberta figures show 23 people have been refused for reasons including a mental-health diagnosis or death “not reasonably foreseeable.’’

The campaign has built in more rehearsal time ahead of Sunday’s showdown in St. Louis.

Trump has also listened to the counsel of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who excelled at the town hall format during his failed presidential run.

Presidential town hall debates are typically serious affairs and lack the liveliness of campaign trail events.

Still, Trump advisor Peter Navarro said he believes his candidate will be energized by engaging with voters.

“Everything about that first

debate environment was alien to the Trump culture of high energy interaction with people,’’ said Navarro, who has advised Trump on economic issues.

“I think he’ll feel much more comfortable.’’

Clinton is far more practiced at town halls and prefers smaller events with more direct voter engagement.

Aides said she won’t shy away from raising recent revelations about Trump’s tax history or reminding voters of his predawn Twitter attacks on a Miss Universe winner, but will aim to keep her focus more on the voters sitting on stage.

Seeking to raise the bar for the businessman, Clinton advisers said they do expect Trump to be more measured than in the last debate.

aden Cook of the South Kamloops Titans has set the tone for a new high school football season.

“Valleyview and Westsyde, those will be easy,” Cook said at practice on Tuesday. “I’m calling those Ws, for sure.

“Vernon is the biggest competition. Valleyview is not on the charts, really.”

Cook and his teammates can back up the smack-talk today at Hillside Stadium, where the Valleyview Vikings and Titans will begin B.C. High School Football AA Okanagan Conference regular-season play at 5 p.m.

The Westsyde Blue Wave are in Vernon today to kick off their campaign against the Clarence Fulton Maroons.

South Kam should be confident, having posted a 3-1 record in conference play last season to qualify for the playoffs, while Westsyde (1-3) and Valleyview (2-2) fell short.

Vernon, which finished 4-0 last season, is expected to be the class of the conference again in 2016.

The Titans will be led

by Grade 12 quarterback Ben MacDonald, part of a group of players that helped keep the senior program

alive three years ago, when it came perilously close to folding due to a lack of numbers.

“It was hard, going to the games and facing the best grade 12s in the province and you’re in Grade 9,” said MacDonald, who’s been starting under centre since Grade 10. “It was hard because the kids knew they were going to get pounded and pounded. Now, it’s our year.”

Added Cook: “Grade 10 we had to play seniors and we got our asses kicked, but it’s worth it because we’ve been good since.”

Lineman Tyson McNeil and utility player Tak Cox are expected to contribute on a Titans’ senior team that will be coached by JP Lancaster, Dean MacDonald and Pete Mercuri.

“We’re hungry this year,” Lancaster said. “Without them [the seniors], I don’t know if there would be South Kam football right now. For them to go through that and go through all the tough losses, that speaks to these guys’ mental toughness.”

The Titans were eliminated from the playoffs in Round 1 last season, suffering a 38-21 defeat to hometown G.W. Graham of Chilliwack.

Numbers-wise, both South Kam and Westsyde seem to be in good shape.

The Titans have 30-plus players on both their junior varsity and senior teams.

While folks in the Gateway to the North are celebrating a 6-0 start and the potential arrival of the New Ice Age that was promised by a new ownership group in 2014, the Kamloops Blazers have fallen into an earlyseason crevasse.

Kamloops dropped to 2-4 after blowing a three-goal lead in Red Deer on Wednesday, surrendering five straight goals in a 5-4 loss to the Rebels.

“It’s hard to explain what happened,” said Deven Sideroff, who scored twice in the first period to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead. “All the guys thought we had it in the bag. After they scored one, we all kind of shut it down.

“We’re putting it behind us and focusing on Calgary.”

Head coach Don Hay certainly wasn’t verbose in a conversation with KTW yesterday morning, not thrilled with his club’s second straight defeat the night before, but he highlighted a need for his charges to stop giving up odd-man rushes.

“They’re really hurting us,” Hay said. “I thought we played 30 minutes of really good hockey, probably our best of the year, then they scored a couple quick goals and we never recovered.”

The Blazers will play the Hitmen tonight in Cowtown, the local WHL club’s sixth consecutive road game and its second stop on a three-game Central Division swing that ends tomorrow with a tilt against the Tigers in Medicine Hat. Kamloops has not seen home ice since opening the season on Sept. 23 with a 9-2 drubbing of the Kelowna Rockets at Sandman Centre.

After starting 0-6 last season and recovering to make the playoffs, being two games under .500 is no reason to panic, but Sideroff and company want to end the mini-slide tonight.

“All the guys, we need to work together and everybody has to be on the same page,” the Summerland product said. “We’re getting guys back from pro camps, we’re starting to settle in and we’re going to start rolling here.”

For his first 86 minutes and 47 seconds in a Kamloops Storm jersey, Aris Anagnostopoulos was perfect.

The 18-year-old netminder put up a shutout in his first start for the junior B club, a 6-0 victory over the Sicamous Eagles, and made it through nearly two periods against the Osoyoos Coyotes without a puck getting by him.

“It was nice, actually. I haven’t had a shutout since second-year bantam, which was four years ago almost,” Anagnostopoulos told KTW. “It was a big change. Definitely threw the monkey off my back with that one.”

In six games with the Storm, he has a 2-3 record with a .922 save percentage and a 2.37 goals-against average.

For Anagnostopoulos, it has been a tough couple years of hockey.

Following a successful minor hockey career in his hometown of Kelowna, the netminder graduated to academy hockey and made stops in Penticton with the Okanagan Hockey Academy and Wilcox, Sask., with the Notre Dame Hounds. He won the Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament with OHA. Then Anagnostopoulos made

the jump to the B.C. Major Midget League, taking over the crease for the Thompson Blazers. The problems with the Thompson program have been well documented and, for more than two years, Anagnostopoulos lived them.

With two wins in a Storm uniform this season, he already has a third as many wins as he amassed in two years with Thompson (six).

“Being from Kelowna, I didn’t lose a game, a regular-season game, from atom to first-year bantam,” he said. “So then, going to OHA, didn’t lose many games, going to Notre Dame, our team didn’t lose many games.

“Then coming to Thompson was just mind-blowing. I won one game my first year and it didn’t come until after Christmastime. It was definitely hard to get used to — still not used to it. I’m still not a fan of losing.”

Anagnostopoulos is an aggressive goalie, his play, in part, making up for his size, he said. At 5-foot-10, he’s not the biggest goalie in the KIJHL, but he compensates with his athleticism, his fiery demeanour. He’s a strong puck handler — he scored a goal from between the pipes in his final season with the Blazers.

Sometimes his fire burns a little too hot, as it did last weekend when he

was handed a one-game suspension for fighting a North Okanagan Knights player who ran him in the final minutes of the contest. But emotion is a big part of his game.

“I love it,” Storm head coach Ed Patterson said.

“When he learns to show his teammates that emotion, but keep an inward calmness . . . when Aris finds that fine line between composure and intensity, he’ll be unstoppable.”

Anagnostopoulos starts tonight as the Storm take on the Revelstoke Grizzlies at Memorial Arena at 7:35 p.m.

Through the ups and downs, the Storm netminder said he has never lost his love of hockey. He first strapped on the pads in atom, but he has been playing goal since he was in diapers — ping pong balls flying off his forehead as his brother and dad played ministick hockey in the basement.

He said Storm fans haven’t seen the best of him yet.

“I haven’t done even close to what I’ve wanted to do here, yet,” Anagnostopoulos said.

“You’ve got to dominate in one spot before you can dominate in the next spot. You can’t just be thinking, ‘I’m going to go to the next spot and be that star tendy.’”

“We knew we were going to take our lumps and bruises going into this season,” Broncos’ head coach Brad Yamaoka said.

“I don’t know if there’s any reason to be upset. With the progression and with the way things are looking, next year is going to be a pretty solid year.”

None of that matters anymore. The goal was to start from the ground up, take a few beatings, improve and look to next year. Mission accomplished.

“We were hoping to get a few more wins out of the year, but we were a young team and we had to get a lot of young guys in key positions up to snuff,” Yamaoka said.

One of those young guys is starting quarterback Colby Henkel, a 19-year-old from Stony Plain, Alta., who took the reins and is in the conversation for B.C. Football Conference rookie of the year.

He is expected to return next season, along with a strong core of players who will have one year under their belts when the 2017 slate begins next summer.

Stage 1 — revamp — is done with.

Falling short of the playoffs next season would be a disappointment, especially considering Broncos’ president Dino Bernardo’s aspirations to contend for the league title in 2018.

“There will be good things happening in the next couple years,” Yamaoka said.

The Kamloops Blazers’ Nolan Kneen was one of 52 WHL players on the NHL Central Scouting Service’s players to watch list this week, the only member of the Blue and Orange to make the cut.

In 52 games last season, the 17-year-old tallied seven points, including a goal.

Kneen was given a C-rating, indicating he is expected to be a candidate for a fourth-, fifth-, or sixth-round selection in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft in Chicago next year.

Police confident they’ve identified tallboy tosser DIANA MEHTA

Toronto police say they are confident they’ve identified the correct person as the fan who tossed a beer can at a Baltimore outfielder during a dramatic Blue Jays playoff game, as rampant speculation raged on social media over whether they had the right man.

The incident took place on Tuesday, when a can hurled from the stands narrowly missed Baltimore Orioles’ player Hyun Soo Kim as he made a catch during the seventh inning of the game at the Rogers Centre.

In the confusion that ensued, Orioles player Adam Jones said he and Kim were taunted with racial slurs.

After announcing they were investigating the tallboy toss by an “unsportsmanlike fan,’’ police released a photograph on Wednesday night of a man they alleged was the one who threw the can.

They did not name the man, but encouraged him to turn himself in.

“We are confident we have made a positive ID,’’ said Const.

Jenifferjit Sidhu. “We will continue to work with Rogers Centre for further investigation.’’

The incident, however, has captivated many baseball fans and online amateur detectives, sparking frame-by-frame analy-

sis of photographs and video footage from the game.

The man in the photograph has come forward, identifying himself as Ken Pagan, an employee of Postmedia. He said he has contacted police.

But in a report published by the Toronto Sun, which is owned by Postmedia, Pagan suggested police may be wrong.

Pagan told the Toronto Sun he was “drinking out of a cup’’ during the game. He also said photos posted on Twitter that show him after the can was tossed clearly indicate he had a cup in his hand.

A spokeswoman with Postmedia, who confirmed Pagan was an employee with the company, said the organiza-

tion was conducting an internal investigation, but had “reached no conclusions.’’

Pagan’s lawyer was not immediately available for comment.

Online, however, theories abounded on just who was actually the tallboy tosser.

“Ken Pagan is totally innocent and this proves it,’’ said one person on Twitter.

“Wait it was definitely Ken Pagan. He chucks it sidearm to make it look like it came from the gap in fans,’’ tweeted another.

The Blue Jays apologized to the Orioles for the incident and Major League Baseball vowed to tighten security and alcohol policies at its games.

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Lightning plan to honour franchise scoring leader Martin St. Louis by retiring the No. 26 he wore over 13 seasons with the team he helped win its only Stanley Cup championship in 2004.

The club announced yester-

day that the six-time all-star, who scored 365 goals from 2000 until March 2014 — when he was traded to the New York Rangers — will have his jersey retired on Jan. 13.

St. Louis is the Lightning’s career leader with 953 points, 588 assists, 28 short-handed goals, 64 game-winning goals and 300 power-play points.

He’s tied with Steven Stamkos with eight hat tricks and second in goals behind Vincent Lecavalier’s 383.

The league’s most valuable player in 2004, St. Louis also was a two-time winner of the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s points leader.

He retired after the 20142015 season with the Rangers.

Guardian angels providing a watchful eye

A

n American pastor was driving with his wife to visit family in northern

Michigan.

They had just passed by the entrance to a state park when he had an overwhelming urge to turn around.

He resisted at first because they were in a hurry to get to their destination. But he relented.

Upon entering the park, he noticed only one other vehicle in the parking lot (it was early December).

There was a young man standing on the viewpoint, atop a tall cliff.

Uncertain, he approached the man, who seemed like he was expecting him.

The young man said he had driven to the park to kill himself, as his life was in shambles.

But, as he was standing on the brink of the precipice, a man he hadn’t noticed before approached

him, urging him to wait.

He said someone would be there soon to talk to him.

Then he simply vanished. Soon afterward, the pastor showed up.

The young man could not explain the mystery man, as the park was fairly remote and there were no other vehicles in the park.

And it was simply impossible that he could appear and disappear like he did.

The pastor suggested that it was his guardian angel and God had specially sent the angel and influ-

enced the pastor to turn around in order to save his life.

Another story suggesting guardian angels comes from a missionary working at a medical mission in Africa.

He had walked to the neighbouring town along a jungle path to get cash from a bank and purchase various supplies.

On his way back, he came across two men who were fighting; one was seriously injured.

He tended to the man’s wounds, told him about Jesus, and went on his way.

The next month he had to make the same trip and it passed without incident.

Later, the same young man he had treated became a convert.

He told him he had been part of a gang of robbers and, because they knew he was carrying money and expensive medicines, they had intended to rob him and kill him while he slept.

But they were dissuaded by the 26 armed guards

surrounding his camp. The missionary laughed and assured the young man he had been completely alone.

The man insisted both he and his robber companions saw the guards and counted them.

The missionary had been telling this story at his home church in Michigan.

At this point, a man jumped up and asked what day this had all happened.

He said he had been intending to go to the golf course that day but was struck by a powerful urge to go to the church to pray for the missionary instead.

It was so strong he called several other men in the church to join him. He asked the men in the congregation who came to pray to stand up — there were 26 of them.

The concept of guardian angels comes from several passages in scripture. Psalm 91 assures believers of their protection from all kinds of perils: He will keep you safe from all hidden dangers, He will cover you with his

wings, you will be safe in his care, God will put his angels in charge of you to protect you wherever you go.

In fact, even Satan quotes this verse when tempting Jesus to prove he was the Son of God by throwing himself off the roof of the temple, saying the angels would protect him from harm.

Psalm 34 seems to confirm the concept of guardian angels: The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.

Jesus echoes the same sentiment and suggests that children are especially protected: See that you don’t despise any of these little ones. Their angels in heaven, I tell you, are always in the presence of my Father in heaven.

The most dramatic example is Peter’s miraculous deliverance from prison.

King Herod has arrested him, intending to put him on trial in the morning.

Peter was bound by chains, sleeping between two guards, with sentries posted outside the locked door. Since Herod had already executed James, the church was extremely worried for Peter and was “earnestly praying to God for him.”

An angel appeared, causing the chains to fall off his wrists and the prison doors to open of their own accord.

The guards were oblivious to the whole escape (Herod had them all executed afterward).

Peter said, “The Lord sent his angel to rescue me from Herod’s power . . . ” While not all Christians believe that these passages means that every person has an assigned guardian angel, it is generally agreed that angels are God’s way of supernaturally protecting those he loves from disaster.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Myrtle Westfall

December 22, 1929 - September 23, 2016 It is with deep sadness that the family of Myrtle Ellen Westfall (nee Partridge) announces her passing on September 23, 2016 at the age of 86.

She was predeceased by her husband Frederick and her parents Pevril and Ellen. She is survived by her brother Bob (Julie), son Gary (Frida), daughters Linda (Barry), Donna (Michael) and Laurie (Ron). Also grandchildren Mark and Colin, Darcy, Angie, Lindsay, Shay, Scott, Corey, Sean, Jennifer, Ashley and all spouses. Myrtle also had sixteen great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.

Myrtle was born in Saltcoats, Saskatchewan, she grew up in Naramata, schooled and worked in Penticton, where she met and then married Fred in 1951. They raised four children in Nelson, Prince George and finally Kamloops. Mom worked in the hospitality industry and finally as a Homemaker for Kamloops Home Support before retiring. She enjoyed travelling, camping, crafting and gardening.

The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses, who cared for Mom at Royal Inland Hospital and Kamloops Hospice Society.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 08, 2016, at 2:00 pm at Kamloops Funeral Home, 285 Fortune Drive, Kamloops.

In lieu of flowers, moms’ charity wishes were, Gideon Bible Society, Dystonia Medical Research, New Life Mission, Crossroads or charitable organization of choice.

David Robin Lee Landstad February, 19 1934 - September 28, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Robin Lee Landstad.

Born on February 19th, 1934 on a farm near Rama, Saskatchewan.

Deceased on September 28th, 2016 at Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House, Kamloops, BC. He is survived by his loving children Lorelee (Randy Ruygrok) and Todd (Laura). His granddaughters Nadia (Paul Davis), Alayna (Jesse Steele), Elizabeth and Lindsay and his greatgranddaughter Mariah.

He will also be deeply missed by his dear friend, Barbara “Bunny” Chudyk.

He was born to Andrew and Beatrice Landstad. They immigrated to Canada from Norway. Dad was fiercely proud of his Norwegian Heritage. David was the fourth oldest of five children. He had one sister Muriel and three brothers Alden “Bud”, Carroll “Colly” and Jerome “Jerry” and who have all passed away.

He married Yvonne “Bonnie” Landstad on June 30th, 1958 (deceased from A.L.S. October 2006).

They had four children – Lorelee (married to Randy and lives in Kamloops), Lorraine (deceased June 1961 at one month old), Christopher (deceased June 2011 from Leukemia) and Todd (married to Laura and lives in Redmond, Washington).

David will be remembered by sisters-in-law and brotherin-law - Lila Landstad, Gwen Ellingson, Joyce and Hugh Calder as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

David was a logger for most of his life – He built logging roads and was really good at it. Before logging he ran

First Memorial Funeral Service Edmond Paul Adkin July 8, 1989 - September 28, 2016

It is with great sadness we announce that after three days in the Intensive Care Unit of the Kelowna General Hospital, Paul died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on the morning of September 28, 2016. He was only 27 years old.

Paul is lovingly remembered by his girlfriend Talyn Bertrand, Dad Tom, brother Matt, Mom Paula (Jim) Lowen, his Grandmother Audrey Cameron, uncle and aunt Rob and Karen Adkin, cousins Ryan (Kim) Adkin, Corey (Bria) Adkin, uncle Cameron Murray, aunt Nicola Murray, cousin Hope, aunt Erica Murray, cousin Brandon Caspar, Nana and Papa Ruth and Leon and a legion of friends. He was predeceased by his Grandmother and Grandfather Claire and Ted Adkin, his uncle Phil Murray and his Grandfather Stan (Marg) Murray.

Paul was born in Vancouver and moved to Kamloops with his family in 1992. He attended Albert McGowan Elementary and Sahali High School. His wide circle of friends was initiated during his early school days.

Paulifrog was active in sports, spending much of his childhood playing hockey and lacrosse. He added rugby to his repertoire in high school. Golf was a new found passion that he hoped to improve in the next few years. He was short of stature but had the heart of a lion. One was always struck by the strength in his legs, chest, shoulders and arms.

Paul graduated from Sahali and went on to get his business degree from TRU in 2013. He worked in construction for several years with his brother Matt.

He had just recently started a career in the financial management and insurance industry with the Investors Group. He tackled his new career with his usual enthusiasm. He was very proud to call his friends and family to inform them of his new job and start the process of establishing his clientele. It is a tough industry, especially for someone as young as Paul, but

Gardening was a huge passion of Dave’s. His yard always looked like another room of the house. His favourite flowers were Rhododendrons and Clematis.

Sports were Dave’s favourite, especially watching baseball and hockey. He played slow pitch and was the pitcher. His first team was the Balco Bushwhackers. He played slow pitch into his mid-70’s. He was an avid skier, both downhill and cross-country. He built many of the original ski runs at Tod Mountain (now Sun Peaks). Golf was also a passion of dads.

Dave and Bonnie loved to travel. They saw many countries in the world before she passed away.

A few years after Bonnie passed away, Dave met a lovely lady, Barbara “Bunny” Chudyk. They loved to travel to Yuma, Arizona for the winters. However, due to his diagnosis with Alzheimer/Dementia they had to stop travelling. Bunny took good care of Dave before he moved into a full care facility.

We would like to thank all of the caregivers, nurses and doctors that took such good care of Dave. Ridgeview Lodge, Royal Inland Hospital – Especially the staff of 6 South and Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House.

he was undaunted. He took pleasure in putting on his “suit” and going to work each day. There is not a doubt that he would have succeeded in this endeavour.

Paul had a special nature. He had a boyish twinkle in his eye and his face always seemed to be in full smile mode. Rarely did you see Paul without a smile, or rather a grin, on his face. His hugs were legendary. He wrapped his arms around you and you felt as though he could break you in two – but instead you received a warm solid hug. You could feel his real love for you radiate from the strength in his arms. He always had a good word for everyone – even those he hadn’t seen for a while or knew only slightly.

Paul had a great sense of humour. Practical jokes were not uncommon. Hanging out with his friends and special lake stays at the Shuswap and East Barriere were a big part of his life. He loved music and was even known to pick up the “air guitar” to entertain the crowd on occasion - most recently at his cousin’s wedding in Mexico on a day cruise to Yelapa. He was extremely loyal and had a host of close, close friends who will miss him deeply – but will never forget him.

Tom, Paula, Matt and Talyn would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the emergency personnel in Kelowna, the staff at the Four Points Hotel in Kelowna and especially all of the staff in the Intensive Care Unit in Kelowna and Kelowna Victim Services for the kind and loving care they gave to Paul, family and friends.

Paul could not have been in better hands throughout this ordeal. In addition, special thanks to the multitude of friends and family who made their way to Kelowna from all over BC and Alberta to say goodbye to Paul.

Your support was, and continues to be, overwhelming.

If love alone could have saved Paul he would be here with us today sharing a chuckle.

A Celebration of Paul’s Life will be held at 2:00 pm at the Calvary Community Church, 1205 Rogers Way, Kamloops on Saturday, October 8, 2016. A reception will follow in the gym at the Church.

Joyce Magdalene Thompson August 10, 1931 - October 4, 2016

It is with great sadness that we must share the passing of our beloved Mom, Auntie, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother Joyce Magdalene Thompson. Joyce passed away on October 4, 2016 at Kamloops Hospice House surrounded by her loved ones.

Mom was born August 10, 1931 in Kenora, Ontario. She was the 5th of 6 rambunctious siblings.

Mom met our Dad Ken as a young girl and quickly agreed to marry him. They married on May 7, 1949 and spent the next 36 years together in Richmond and Kamloops. Together, they raised five children Cal (Wendy) Larry (Hennie), Sandy (Bill), Cindi and Ross (Brenda). She was blessed with seven grandchildren Ambika, Derek, Trevor, Carly, Taylor, Alyssa and Jocelyn, as well as five great-grandchildren Alanie, Hope, Maggie, Yuri and Antonin.

A few years after Ken’s passing in 1985, she met Wally, who became her new love and they spent 17 glorious years together until Wally’s death in 2005. Together they loved puttering in the garden, travelling around the US and Canada, cheering loudly for their beloved Kamloops Blazers and loving their golden lab Missie.

Joyce is also predeceased by her parents Eric and Helga, brothers Cliff, Larry, Leonard and her sister Mildred.

The family would like to send special thanks to Dr. Thomasse and his staff, as well as the amazing staff at Kamloops Hospice House, who made Mom’s last week’s bearable for not only her, but all of us who loved her so very much.

Dolores Nixon It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Dolores Nixon on September 29th, 2016 at the age of 88.

Dolores (Grandnan) will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with close relatives and friends.

A prairie girl at heart and a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, her passions in life included reading, curling, crocheting, music and dancing. Dolores had a great love of animals and possessed a green thumb when it came to plants and gardens.

She also enjoyed cooking and baking for all of her family to gather around and enjoy.

Her kindheartedness and goodwill towards others touched many and she will always be with us.

THE LITTLE UNICORN

There lived a little unicorn (From when the earth was new), His coat so white it glistened, His eyes a sparkling blue.

He learned that there are shadows In spite of shining sun.

The more he grew, he found that life Was never always fun.

The unicorn tried tirelessly, And gave the climb his best; But he felt it was not good enough, He felt he’d failed the test.

In innocence and beauty, He danced through woods and streams.

The animals danced with him, His heart aglow with dreams.

For now he’d learn of feelings That come from deep within; No longer in the “dream world” Where (for so long) he’d been.

He could not understand it When he felt himself rejected – When all his gentle being asked Was but to be accepted.

He laughed and played with rainbows, So happy all day through, He loved to kiss the flowers As their petals shone with dew.

His gentle heart desired But to know the pleasure of To give and to receive The very precious gift of love.

All this was just too much for him, He knew not what to do.

That he was special as himself, Somehow, he never knew.

He wandered through the meadows In the moon’s soft, silver light.

He loved to gaze at all the stars That lightened up the night.

To love meant to be happy, And yet it also brought him pain; For those he loved could hurt him Again.. and yet again.

His spirit crushed, he felt defeated, And lonely tears would start.

Not understanding how to love, It simply broke his heart.

He listened to the music Of the birds that graced the trees.

He frolicked with the butterflies And raced the gentle breeze.

His mother held him lovingly And tried to ease his fears About the sadness life could bring...

The lonely, bitter tears.

But now he’s in a loving place Where all his pain has ceased, Where all accepted him and his love, Where all he knows is peace.

But, as he grew and learned of life, The sparkle in his eye Grew misty as he realized Just what it means to cry.

She said, “Life is like a mountain, (And surely this is true) That we must climb as best we can.

There’s no ‘around or ‘through.’”

A loving Being tells him, “You’re delightful as you are.”

His spirit free, his brilliance now Outshines the brightest star!

Throw in rehearsals for the first play in the Actors’ Workshop Theatre season and it can be a bit of a juggling act.

But, when your passion is theatre, students make it work, said Erik Hagar, one of the six-member cast of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which opens on Thursday, Oct. 13, in the Black

COMING UP: ART IN THE DARK | OCT. 15

The second annual Art in the Dark fundraiser for the Kamloops Arts Festival is on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Lansdowne Village.

Last year, Michael and Jennifer OBrien (above) of 4Cats Art Studio got in the spirit with glow-in-the-dark paint. This year’s schedule includes performances by Bees and the Bare Bones, Studio 423 and other bands, an ultra-violet art battle, glowin-the-dark clay with Amanda Eccleston, a glow-in-the-dark painting session with Ken Farrar and bodypainting by airbrush artist Kelly Wright. The event starts at 7 p.m. and continues to midnight. Tickets are $40, $30 for students and council members, and are available at kamloopsarts.ca. “It’s very specific, but entirely universal, too. We are all Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike and Nina and Cassandra at some point. We are all searching for meaning and our place in the world, even though we go about it in different and, to others, often strange ways.

“The theme suits my life’s mantra — that we are all put here for a purpose, and that purpose is to love one another as hard as we can. This theme has run through all my shows, apparently; I’m just realizing that recently.”

While it is a work that comes

with themes reminiscent of Anton Chekhov’s plays — right down to the names of some of the main characters — it’s not necessary to have familiarity with the Russsian playwright’s work to enjoy the production, Tulliani said.

Simply put, it’s the story of a dysfunctional family confronting — in a comedic way — issues of jealousy, lust, revenge and aging.

Vanya and Sonia (names taken from Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya) are middle-aged unemployed siblings living together and dependent on their movie-star sister Masha (a character in Chekhov’s Three Sisters play) for everything.

Sonia was adopted, depressed

and depressing; Vanya is gay and morose.

Cassandra, who does the cleaning in the house, has the gift of prophecy — much like the Greek legend character from whom her name comes — although no one ever believes her.

Into this comes Masha (another name drawn from Three Sisters) along with her new and muchyounger boyfriend Spike. Their issues and attitudes lead to arguments that eventually see Masha telling her siblings she’s selling the house.

Add in some secret affairs, a voodoo doll and the appearance of Nina, a young actress whose

very existence and potential talent upsets the vain Masha, and there’s plenty of humour — sometimes dark.

But, in the end, the family is intact and optimistic.

Third-year theatre-arts student Shannon Cooper plays Sonia and said rehearsals have been fun.

Hagar, who plays Vanya, added that, while the work has its challenges, rehearsals have been a great time to discover new things about each character.

For Tulliani, the role of Masha is an opportunity to take on a character much different than the one she had last year in The Mail Order Bride, where she played a

gentle, nice woman.

Rounding out the cast are Berlin Msiska as Spike, Nina Elizabeth King as Cassandra and Mariana Makulkina as Nina.

Verwey said she had to cut the script back — just a reading took 2.5 hours — but the pared-back version still carries Durang’s message about the human condition.

The play runs from Oct. 13 to Oct. 16 and from Oct. 20 to Oct. 22. Tickets are available at the campus box office next to the theatre or at the Kamloops Live box office, 1025 Lorne St., 250-3745483, kamloopslive.ca.

Collective begins as market wraps up

T

he Kamloops Artisan Market had an amazing first year.

We set up right in front of the library, on the 400-block of Victoria Street.

Artists from all over the area, some as far away as the Kootenays, came to Kamloops to show and sell their unique artwork at our little market; 56 different artists participated from May to the end of September this year.

The artwork ranged from painting, fibre, glass, carving, painted object, photography, sculpture and sewing to handmade clothing.

ists at once, so we created a time-sharing opportunity to benefit everyone. Each artisan member displays and sells their work one day a week.

Two artists work in the space daily. The best part is we rotate the art every day, so visitors can interact with

new artists and artwork each visit.

The hours of operation are Monday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except holidays.

The Kamloops Artisan Collective is taking applications for membership.

Local band to launch new album At Mission Dolores is hosting a listening party on Saturday at Padlock Studio, 175 Second Ave., to mark the release of the band’s self-titled debut album.

Fronted by JP Lancaster, the band is inspired by the music of the 1970s, with Lancaster recording multi-layered demos, working out the instrumentals and then bringing in musicians to see the project through.

The longest serving restaurant in Kamloops has been dishing some of the tastiest Chinese food to their customers and it's no fluke they've been around so long.

After all, she’s just 14.

But, Nicole Bruce acknowledged, it’s likely her daughter will have an extensive song catalogue by the time she graduates from South Kamloops secondary, where she’s in Grade 9 — and there’s a shelf somewhere collecting a lot of hardware as the teen singersongwriter continues to win competitions.

The most recent was the Shuswap Idol held during the Salmon Arm Fall Fair.

She won it three years ago and took first place again last month.

In August, she took the top three awards in The Star Experience Canada, a B.C. songwriting competition for youth offered annually by philanthropist Ria Jade.

At that contest, Ruby won first place, best song for Lifeboat and audience favourite.

The win means she’ll be heading to Blue Light Studio, owned by Kaj FalchNielsen, at some point to record her song.

The studio has worked with acts including Swollen Members, Kyprios and The Boom Booms.

The Trews are coming back to Kamloops for a show on Nov. 8 at Cactus Jack’s Night Club, 130 Fifth Ave. The group played at the same venue two years ago to a packed house (above). This year’s tour is a celebration of the band’s 13 years of making music, with 16 Top 10 rock radio singles, two gold-certified albums and several shelves-worth of awards.

The band, with lead vocalist and guitarist Colin MacDonald, lead guitarist John-Angus MacDonald, bassist Jack Syperek and drummer Gavin Moure, has performed more than 1,000 shows worldwide on its own and opened for many other bands. The Canadian Music Class Challenge, formerly called Canada’s Greatest Music Class, accepts submissions from music classes in elementary and secondary schools in six categories: instrumental and vocal/choral (a cappella or band) at the elementary, junior high or secondary levels.

Winners receive a high-tech classroom recording kit that includes a laptop, recording software, speakers, a keyboard, microphones and more, as well as a commemorative plaque.

With just a couple of weeks to go, the campaign to raise $28,000 to create a legacy fund at the Kamloops Art Gallery is still accepting donations.

The Kamloops Power Choir has started for another year and is welcoming new members.

The choir, which covers songs by the likes of Prince, David Bowie and The Beatles, is open to all ages and abilities.

St. Ann’s students take to streets Annual Walkathon hopes to raise $30,000 for private school Students from all 12 grades at St. Ann’s Academy will be taking to the streets of Kamloops today for the annual SAA Walkathon.

More than 400 students will take part in the walk, which will start at 8:30 a.m. from the school grounds next to Royal Inland Hospital.

The walkathon is the single-largest fundraising event held by the school, which is the oldest, continuously operating independent school in the province of B.C. The goal this year is to raise $30,000 to cover various capital expenses, including the continued expansion of mobile-technology resources for use

by students in all grades in the school.

School officials are asking drivers on Columbia Street, in the downtown core and on Overlanders Bridge to be careful as the groups of students, teachers and parents supervisors make their way through several areas of the city.

Students in the early elementary grades will be walking east along Columbia Street to Prince Charles Park, with some going from there farther north to Pioneer Park. Older students will be following a 20-kilometre route that will take them across Overlanders Bridge and around areas of the North Shore before returning to the school.

Gary Hunt will speak to the Kamloops Naturalist Club on Thursday, Oct. 20, on mushrooms.

The professor emeritus at Thompson Rivers University

PLENTY TO DO AT SCIENCE CENTRE It’s another busy month at the Big Little Science Centre.

Each Saturday, there is a featured show at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The schedule includes; Oct. 8, the Amazing Magnetism Show; Oct. 15, the Forces and Motion Show; Oct. 22, the Super Static Electricity Show and, on Saturday, Oct. 29, in honour of Halloween, the centre will host Gross Science from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a chance for children of all ages to make some slime and try out some Halloween favourites.

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, Robert Atwood, Michael Sullivan and Stuart Richey from Hummingbird Drones will be at the centre for a 7 p.m. talk about practical uses of drones and how they work.

Admission is free and the session is suitable for older children and adults.

On Sunday, Nov. 6, centre staff is hosting a fundraiser at Duffy’s Pub, 1797 Pacific Way, in Dufferin.

There are dinner seatings at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. for the steak, chicken or vegetarian pasta dinner.

don’t know about you, but whenever I’m doing something active and exciting, I hear the James Bond musical score playing in my head.

Such is the case today, as I drive the narrow, winding switchbacks and cliff-hugging roads in Switzerland.

I suddenly imagine my rental car is an Aston Martin. I push the pedal down and make squealing tire noises with my mouth as we swerve around the tight curves.

My wife, who is accompanying me, begins to feel shaken, not stirred and the Bond theme is replaced by a certain ringing in my ears.

But you know the secret agent drill — sharply dressed, daring mission, chic travel companion (in this case my angry wife).

THE JUMP: The Verzaska Dam can be reached from Gordola via a very busy two-kilometre road. The world’s highest stationary bungee station is in the middle of the dam wall and, as I discovered, a reservation is absolutely essential for those planning to take the 007 Jump. I conveniently forgot to make one. Do something not totally unique and take the leap in a tuxedo.

BLOFELD’S LAIR — PIZ GLORIA: We stayed in Interlaken, drove to Stechelberg and took the cable car in three sections via Gimmelwald, Mürren and Birg to the Schilthorn. Reservations are recommended for the restaurant.

Take time on the way down to explore the charming, vehicle-free alpine village of Mürren. May I also recommend a stop at nearby Trümmelbach Falls near Lauterbrunnen, a wild glacier ravine with ten waterfalls hidden within the rock. early to get ahead of the crowds and cruising along the serpentine mountain roads of

the Jungfrau region in search of the ultimate Bond movie villain’s lair.

Our destination, Piz Gloria, is located on top of Schilthorn peak, a 2,970-metre high summit in the Bernese Oberland, above the charming Swiss alpine village of Mürren.

It appeared in the 1969 Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, as the mountaintop hideout of 007’s nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

Looking for a location to film, the producers found a lift company in Mürren that needed funds to complete a cable car to the top of the Schilthorn and a restaurant they were building there.

The film company helped with the financing in return for the right to use the complex.

In the movie, Bond spends some time here with a bevy of beautiful ladies, takes off down the mountain on the obligatory ski chase and then returns by helicopter to destroy the whole place.

We access the peak via three cable lifts, the final stretch being the longest aerial cableway

walk hugs the sheer mountainside beneath the tram, affording spectacular views down the Lauterbrunnen Valley, one of the most beautiful waterfall and glacier canyons anywhere.

In the movie, several bad guys plummet off these sheer 800-metre cliffs into the valley.

In the real world, people pay to do that in tandem paragliders.

Though we could have stayed and watched the paragliders and skiers all day, we have to be off to our next Bond location, skirting Geneva and the 2,429-metre Furka Pass, which was used as a location in Goldfinger, onward to the southern Swiss city of Locarno.

It has been called one of the best stunts in film history, when the Pierce Brosnan Bond era arrived in style with a bungeejump off the 220-metre high Verzasca Dam in the opening sequence of the 1995 movie Goldeneye.

Reminders of the building’s storied history are everywhere.

The souvenir shop sells everything Bond, hallways are decorated with large stills from the movie and outside is the viewing deck where helicopters landed in the film.

A just completed, hair-raising, glass sky-

get some shots of the enormous dam where the famous leap took place, but it is also the ultimate adrenaline rush for tourists willing to shell out 255 francs ($300 Cdn.) to emulate their favourite spy on a 7.5 second freefall.

Fortunately for me, the jumping card is full on this sunny afternoon, with Swiss military recruits using the leap as a training exercise.

So, as the sensible 007 actor Brosnan did in the film, I decide to use a stunt double.

The Bond films have long proved a compelling inspiration for travel, the super-spy’s duty to Queen and Country flinging him from one exotic location to another.

So grab your passport, hum the 007 tune, and go off chasing Bond, without any obligation to wrestle your foes at the edge of a cliff in the Swiss Alps.
