Dan Hines freely admits his rivals in next year’s provincial election will have one advantage over him.

On Wednesday, a day before Hines was acclaimed the B.C. Green Party candidate for Kamloops-North Thompson, party leader and MLA Andrew Weaver said the party will refuse donations from corporations and unions, in line with the party’s call for a ban on all but individual donations.

But, Hines said, even on a far more limited budget than his B.C. Liberal and NDP counterparts, he’s optimistic the riding and the province are ready for something new.

“I feel it’s in the zeitgeist of the province right now, that something is happening,” Hines told supporters at Reubin’s Diner yesterday.

Hines, a facilitator and Anglican priest, said he plans to make up

for a smaller war chest with seven months of hard campaigning.

“I’ve got this body and I’ve got the bodies of some amazing volunteers,” he said.

“Elections are really won person-to-person, especially in a more intimate community like the North Thompson,” he said.

“It’s going to be one conversation at a time, one person that’s convinced that voting for the Green Party is in full alignment with their head and their heart.”

Hines said his campaign is driven by concern over man-made climate change, noting atmospheric carbon-dioxide levels are now above 400 parts per million — a symbolic level some climate groups have described as a tipping point in carbon pollution — even during the time of year when atmospheric carbon dioxide is typically at its lowest.

He also called for an improved environmental-assessment process for projects like the proposed Ajax mine, which both he and Kamloops-South Thompson Green candidate Donovan Cavers oppose.

The riding should also expect to see more of Weaver.

In an email read at yesterday’s announcement, the party leader said he plans to appear alongside Hines during the campaign.

In Kamloops-North Thompson, Hines joins a still-developing field of candidates, alongside the NDP’s Barb Nederpel and Communist Peter Kerek.

A three-way race between Mayor Peter Milobar, Steven Puhallo and Mike Grenier for the B.C. Liberal nomination is ongoing. Current MLA and Health Minister Terry Lake is not seeking re-election.

City of Kamloops CAO David Trawin has confirmed John Wilson, who served as the city’s community safety manager, is no longer in his role, but would not comment on whether he was fired or left the position.

Wilson was with the city for 10 years. His last day was Sept. 23.

Trawin said Wilson leaving “had nothing to do with the review of bylaws or vice-versa.”

The department is in the midst of a priority and service review, which is expected to wrap up in 2017. In an interview JON earlier this WILSON summer, Corporate Services and Community Safety director David Duckworth said the review would, among other subjects, examine whether using bylaw officers to break up transient camps and deal with aggressive panhandlers were still high priorities for the city.

“The review was already underway and we have covered off what is working well, what is not working well,” Trawin said via email.

The structure of the department is also up for review.

Bylaw supervisor John Ramsay will fill Wilson’s role on an acting basis.

As part of the review, Trawin said the city will review the community safety manager position to determine if it is still required.

A change in focus at Heroes Pub at the university is welcome — but students still would like to see more choice, one of their spokesmen said.

Michael Zaitlin, chair of the student caucus at Thompson Rivers University, said a survey last year showed a desire for the university to go away from one contractor providing all food services and open it to competition.

Heroes has been renamed The Den — referencing the athletic teams’ WolfPack identifier — and its licence is now foodprimary so it can welcome in the many students on campus who are younger than 19.

Zaitlin said it’s more like a family restaurant now, with different programming on the TV

screens, local craft beers now available and a menu being developed through feedback from students. It will also be open a bit later, closing the doors at 10 p.m.

Zaitlin said students feel the need for more competition to provide food services.

“If one team owns the whole league, why try to make it better?” he asked.

Zaitlin said he often eats at the cafeteria staffed by culinaryarts students at the university.

“You get a gourmet meal for $10 and there’s plenty of choice,” he said. “That’s the kind of thing we want more of.”

Glenn Read, TRU’s director of ancillary services, said there are many reasons why the university uses one contractor — Aramark — to provide food.

A major one is the requirement Aramark hire students if

possible, Read said.

About 68 per cent of the staff at the outlets are students and the company also employs 17 TRU graduates.

Aramark works with the university providing practicum placements for students in the education and skills training program, as well as those studying the culinary arts.

It would be difficult managing those placements, Read said, if he had to deal with several contractors.

“We’re not done,” Read said of reacting to student concerns about foods provided. “I know the students are impatient and want to see changes but we’re better off now than we were three years ago.”

Read said one of the considerations in the future will be making changes to reflect the student demographic.

No foul play in downtown death Police say foul play was not involved after a man’s body was found downtown on Wednesday.

Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said police and paramedics responded to a call at 5:40 p.m. of two males down between St. Paul and Seymour streets at Seventh Avenue.

One of the men, in his 50s, was dead.

The other, in his 40s, was taken to hospital.

Shelkie would not say whether there is any indication the incident was drug-related.

She said the file is now with the BC Coroners Service.

When Alexx Taishi arrived in Kamloops to start her high-school studies, she felt like there was too much distance between people.

She felt uncomfortable, was worried about breaking rules and was focused on her sense she was in Canada representing her homeland of China.

Taishi is one of 59 students at the Maple Leaf North America private high school which has partnered with Thompson Rivers University to offer a curriculum of grades 10 to 12 studies that includes both the B.C. and Chinese curriculum.

The students and their teachers occupy a few rooms on the second floor of the Old Main Building on campus. The students also have dormitory residences.

weeks since she arrived to start her Grade 11 studies, she’s started to relax and sees Kamloops not as a cold city but as one where people respect personal space.

She enjoys the campus, from the rainbow flag to how it accommodates students with disabilities.

“There is respect for all,” she told a gathering at the official opening of the school.

Although she’s far from home, she said, she likes her living situation.

Each student has a bedroom and they share common spaces.

“This design is great,” Taishi said because, while she enjoys spending time with her fellow stu-

dents, she values the time she can be on her own, time when she can do things she is interested in “or prep for my biology test.”

She’s also learned “there is a bigger world” and describes Kamloops as “warm, beautiful, with clean air and kind people.”

She has also developed a new understanding “of the meaning of home — and how good my dad can cook.”

TRU and China Maple Leaf Education Systems (CMLES) have been partners for about 20 years but this is the first time it has led to classes in Kamloops.

The agreement signed earlier this year anticipates building a private boarding school

for the students on the campus as part of the TRU university village plan.

Now, Maple Leaf is renting the space it needs.

CMLES is China’s largest private school system and was certified to provide B.C. curriculum by the province’s ministry of education in 1998.

The TRU school is the first CMLES has built in Canada.

Christopher Seguin, TRU’s vice-president academic, said the high school is not in competition with School District 73, which also brings international students into its secondary system, including many from China.

Seguin said students come to campus “through a confirmed and solid pipeline.

“We’re not going to China to recruit students. This is part of a long-time partnership and we’re not venturing into new ground looking for students.”

Red Bridge closed Sunday The Red Bridge will be closed to motor-vehicle traffic for almost 10 hours on Sunday, Oct. 2, as work is done to reinforce the wooden deck and repair a pothole at the south end of the span.

The work is scheduled to take place

Conservation officials say conflicts between humans and bears have increased drastically in recent weeks, especially in and around Kamloops, as the animals prepare for hibernation.

“Up until probably the first week in August, we were down with bear conflicts, considerably down for the five-year average,” B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) Sgt. Kevin Van Damme told KTW. “The number of bears we’ve had to put down in the last three weeks has brought that average back up, which is usually around 10 bears a year.”

“What we’ve seen lately is we’ve seen high numbers of bear encounters across the province,” Doyle said, pointing to a low yield of high-elevation berries.

“They’re searching for food.

Unfortunately, there’s some common attractants like fruit and garbage that are readily available.”

According to Van Damme, there have been about five reported bear encounters a day in recent weeks in and around Kamloops.

It’s problematic, he said, because the animals that venture into the city often have to be killed.

“They lose their fear of people,” he said, noting black bears cannot be relocated so close to hibernation season.

“That’s why there’s so much energy

put into prevention, education,” he said.

“That’s why we spend all of our energy on that.”

Doyle said caution has to be taken by residents with fruit trees, chicken coops and garbage.

He said leaving attractants out is actually a ticketable offence and asked people with high-value fruit trees and chicken coops to consider electric fences.

WildSafe B.C. provincial co-ordinator Frank Ritcey urged Kamloops residents to be careful with their garbage and fruit trees — at least for the next month or so, when the black bears will go to sleep for the winter.

“It’s been a busy fall so far, but now the numbers are starting to drop off,” he said.

“Bears are getting ready for hibernation this time of year.”

VIEWPOINT THE HOT AND NOT OF THE WEEK Kamloops This Week looks at the stories of the week — the good, the bad and all in-between:

HOT: The tour of British Columbia and the Yukon by the royal couple William and Kate.

In Victoria, the couple was presented with a Spirit Blanket created

by Kamloops artist Clarence Mills. In Kelowna, Riversong Guitars owner Mike Miltimore handed William a custom-made acoustic guitar made from B.C. wood.

There are those who scoff at the monarchy, dismissing it as an archaic and costly tradition.

And that it may be, but we’d bet Mills and Miltimore are over the moon with joy at having their creative passion embraced by the couple.

Anybody who has seen how giddy Miltimore is in a short video he posted to his Facebook page will know just how important the occasion was to him.

NOT: Those drug dealers who continue to lace their product with the deadly fentanyl drug, apparently to maximize profits.

Despite the provincial declaration of a health emergency in the spring, those selling continue to kill and those buying and using continue to die.

It is not only hard-core addicts who are succumbing. Recreational users, those deciding to periodically amp up a party, are also falling victim, as we learned this week with the death at a Kelowna wedding reception of a 27-year-old Kamloops man.

Four others overdosed after ingesting the same cocaine, but they were revived.

This epidemic seems to know no end and the only way to avoid becoming a statistic is to avoid taking any drugs that come from an unknown source.

Setting the record straight about their hero NAME MIXUP LEADS TO REFLECTION

W

hen Randy Tomlin opened a recent edition of KTW, a familiar name in a story caught his eye.

The story then caught his ire.

Randy’s son is Sean Tomlin, who four years ago crashed his truck while racing to get his critically injured friend medical help. Sean crashed en route, the accident killing his friend, Ben Kirkey, and seriously injuring Sean.

Two years after the crash, Sean agree to plead guilty to dangerous driving, with other charges dismissed.

His dad noted his son completed conditions of the court sentence without complaining and took responsibility for his actions. Family and friends rallied around him.

Tomlin said Sean thinks of Ben every day. The two were best of friends since kindergarten.

In that KTW article Randy Tomlin read, a man with the same first and last name as his son had been in court after breaching conditions related to a driving condition.

Unfortunately, the article erroneously referred to that Sean Tomlin as Randy Tomlin’s son.

Tomlin was understandably angry with the story, which he noted again raised misconceptions as to what really occurred.

But the article also prompted him to think about talking about his son’s justice-system ordeal, to perhaps set straight facts about the tragic accident and subsequent court case that may have been left in the minds of those who only know of his son through media coverage in 2012 and 2014.

“Everybody of importance knows and understands, except when that story went out, they understood that story,” Tomlin said of the mixup that linked a man with the same name to his son.

“He’s our hero and we are very proud of him.”

In October 2014, the Crown decided against seeking a jail sentence for Sean, calling the events of May 26, 2012 a “truly exceptional case.”

Tomlin takes it a step further, maintaining there should never have been a court case to begin

The family of the victim agree and was not in favour of prosecution.

A letter was submitted to court from Ben’s father, stating “Sean did what most friends would have done and a terrible accident resulted from the panic. We have no desire to add to Sean’s burden. He needs to get on with his life.”

The events of that day four years ago involved a stagette being held at Scuitto Lake, south of Barnhartvale. It was a private gathering on private property involving friends in the wedding party, including some parents.

“Basically, the guys were doing their thing and the girls were doing their thing,” Tomlin said.

“There wasn’t a lot of drinking involved. It was six o’clock at night. They weren’t going anywhere. It was like you having a party in your backyard.”

Among the events was skeet shooting, a target sport in which clay targets are mechanically flung into the air and shot at by a person wielding a shotgun.

“Ben was going down to operate the skeet thing and the kid turned around and shot him,” Tomlin said of the accident that set everything in motion.

Tomlin said the group there chose Sean to drive his critically injured childhood friend to the meet an ambulance that was en route.

“And it’s not just a kid that was there that got shot,” Tomlin said. “This is a kid that he grew up from kindergarten with.

“They [Kirkey family] considered him [Sean] a son. They were inseparable. Ben had Lyme disease and Sean was there to nurse him back to health.

“He sure as hell wasn’t going

to let his friend die in front of him.”

At trial, the Crown acknowledged had Ben survived the accident, he would have likely lost his arm below the elbow as a result of the shotgun injury.

So, Sean loaded a gravely injured Ben into his Dodge Ram 4X4 pickup truck and headed down Scuitto Lake Road, trying desperately to wave other drivers down as he drove.

An ambulance had been called, Tomlin said, but for some reason the paramedics were not aware of the urgency of the emergency.

In fact, Tomlin said, it wasn’t until the second call — the 911 call after Tomlin crashed — that the ambulance activated its lights and sirens and sped to the scene.

According to Tomlin, something happened when his son rounded a corner and drove over a cattle guard en route to the hospital.

The crash killed Ben and seriously injured Sean, who Tomlin said flew 80 feet from the truck, hitting a tree 10 feet above ground.

“Only because he’s a football player — he’s six-foot-two, 250 pounds — is probably the reason he’s alive now,” Tomlin said.

Now 30, Sean is a foreman in a concrete company and lives with a minor brain injury.

Tomlin noted his son’s postsentence actions were impeccable, including completing his court-ordered communityservice hours in half the time expected, attending physical rehab three times a week and maintaining his job despite having his licence suspended for two years.

“After watching his buddy almost die with Lyme disease — and these were as close to being brothers as you could get — he wasn’t going to let his brother die. That’s the way we brought him up,” Tomlin said.

“If somebody finds fault with this, put their name on a list.

“Those are the people I’m not going to go out in the bush with, I’m not going to go fishing with. I’m not going to put myself in any kind of situation because they’re not going to help.” editor@kamloopsthisweek.com Twitter:@ChrisJFoulds

WE CAN DO BETTER WITH CENOTAPH — MUCH BETTER Editor: I recently took a curious look around the publicized upgrade to the Kamloops Cenotaph, anticipating a marked improvement, not so much about the monument itself but with respect to its surroundings.

There is some sort of park around the Cenotaph, a grassy slope with a mixed stand of mature trees and an old stand-out but dying maple.

I remember calling upon the city’s parks department a while back requesting they intervene

And within the sobbing and the anguish, the mind cannot avoid dedicating a thought to the exultance and celebration of life and liberty.

I was hoping for a newly created garden with layered, multi-seasonal planting.

This was to be a garden for thoughtfulness, for contemplation but with a hint of reassuring comfort, with the hope to rise above the sorrow.

Instead, I encountered a few plants, strewn with disparaging, disconnected carelessness.

The Crown has dropped illegal hunting charges against a Nicola Valley trapper who argued the rules were unclear.

The provincial Court Services Online database shows a stay of proceedings has been entered on charges under the Wildlife Act against Kim Robinson.

Charges are stayed when there is not a substantial likelihood of conviction.

The charges stemmed from an incident in January 2015, when a conservation officer stopped to check on Robinson as he was pulled over on a Nicola Valley backroad.

The Crown alleged he targeted a bobcat without a special hunting tag and, instead, used hounds to track the fleeing animal under his trapping licence.

Robinson was charged with three counts under the Wildlife Act, one of

them for having an unrelated tag for a bear improperly marked.

Robinson testified in court he told the conservation officer, and had witnesses to back him up, that he was hunting a cougar using tracking dogs. He had a tag to hunt cougar.

But the conservation officer testified Robinson told him his hounds were “on a bobcat.”

Robinson has both trapping and hunting licences.

The Crown originally argued at trial that hunters — but not trappers — can use dogs to track prey.

Contacted this week, Robinson said knowledgable trappers have always known they can use dogs to track prey, but noted the province only recently changed the rules.

“The new regulations just came out in the summer,” he said.

A Kamloops man charged with murder in connection to a fatal stabbing in January outside a North Shore sushi restaurant will have a date set next month for a five-day preliminary hearing.

Eric Charlie has been in custody since January, when he was arrested on an unrelated breach charge. In March, he was charged with second-degree murder.

The 32-year-old is

accused of stabbing John Southwell, 30, in the 400block of Tranquille Road on Jan. 22.

Employees of Hatsuki Sushi told KTW the injured man briefly stumbled into their restaurant and asked for help before being rushed by ambulance to hospital.

Charlie had been released from prison two weeks before the stabbing.

On Jan. 8, a B.C. Supreme Court judge sentenced Charlie to a three-year probation term on a string of charges after he was pros-

ecuted six times under a false name.

The Crown had been seeking a jail sentence of just under two years.

Lawyers will return to court on Oct. 17 to set a date for a five-day preliminary inquiry for Charlie on the murder charge.

Preliminary inquiries are hearings after which a provincial court judge determines whether there is enough evidence against an accused for a trial to take place in B.C. Supreme Court.

Invader sentenced to time served A Kamloops man who pleaded guilty last week to charges stemming from a drug-related 2014 home invasion won’t spend any more time behind bars.

Steven Insua, 32, was sentenced yesterday to time served and two years of probation.

On March 16, 2014, Insua and three other men entered a York Avenue home and demanded a stash of missing drugs.

The residents of the North Kamloops home — a mother, her two adult sons and their grandmother — said they had no idea where the dope was.

Court previously heard a former tenant of the home had been a drug dealer and is believed to have moved after a $60,000 stash of drugs went missing.

Insua was arrested in November 2014 and spent 10 months in custody.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Hope Hyslop said that was enough, placing Insua on a two-year probation term with orders he abstain from drugs and alcohol and not possess any weapons.

Insua will also have to surrender a sample of his DNA to a national criminal database.

New rules state trappers cannot use dogs to pursue fur-bearing animals.

While Robinson said the rules are now clear, he argues they’re misguided.

He is still able to harvest a bobcat with a trap, but that trap doesn’t differentiate between a mature tomcat and a female or juvenile.

By using tracking dogs, however, Robinson said he is able to target the mature bobcat that is less important to sustainability of the population.

“When I look at the track, I can tell you what it is,” he said. “I can tell it’s a mature tom.”

Robinson came to fame nearly a decade ago when he found fugitive Allan Schoenborn, who was later found not criminal responsible by reason of a mental disorder for killing his three young children in a Merritt home.

From a very young age, Dr. Tara MacKay had a passion for animals and helping others, and for anyone who knows her, she has always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian.

Born and raised in Kamloops, Dr. MacKay received a degree in Animal Biology from Thompson Rivers University in 2011 before moving to Saskatoon to pursue her veterinary degree at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. MacKay graduated in 2015 and then worked for over a year at a small animal practice in Penticton, BC. It was here that she got to better develop her interests in preventative and wellness medicine. Her interests also include ophthalmology, oncology and internal medicine. She is very happy to be back working in Kamloops and excited to be joining the Kamloops Veterinary Clinic team.

Joining Dr. MacKay back in Kamloops is her boyfriend Charlie and their dog Mac, an 11 year old Cocker Spaniel, and Miley, a very sweet rescue cat. In what looked and sounded like a road-test of her 2017 election campaign, Premier Christy Clark used her annual speech to municipal leaders Wednesday to announce new funds for water systems and benefits for forest firefighters.

Speaking to a packed room of local politicians at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Victoria, Clark committed $148 million to a clean water and wastewater fund for communities. That funds a third of the costs, with federal contributions raised to 50 per cent, leaving local governments to raise the remainder.

Clark praised B.C. Government Employees’ Union president Stephanie Smith for pushing to extend her union’s benefits to seasonal forest firefighters, several of whom joined Clark and Smith to address the media after her speech.

Smith said about 200 firefighters will receive benefits this year, and more in future years.

Clark also announced an additional $10 million to support a drug addiction treatment centre, research and health care training in response to the growing opioid overdose epidemic that has spread from B.C. across the country.

She touted the benefits of the Pacific Northwest LNG project in northwestern B.C., which was given federal approval this week. Taking questions after the speech, she would not predict when the Petronas-led group of Asian investors would proceed with the $36-billion investment, but said China and India in particular are anxious to move to natural gas as a cleaner fuel.

NDP Leader John Horgan described Clark’s speech as a repackaging of her 2013 election campaign, with “B.C. first” replacing “families first” and a promise to eliminate operating debt replacing one to pay off all debt with natural gas revenues.

Horgan said the province needs to renew its focus on the forest industry.

The Tolko sawmill in Merritt has announced it’s closing in December due to a lack of logs, while record log exports are being shipped out from coastal forests, he said.

“If we can send raw logs to Asia, we can get them up the Coquihalla,” Horgan said.

Clark said the B.C. and federal governments are focused on reaching a new lumber trade agreement with the United States, which appears poised to impose new duties on Canadian lumber as the old agreement runs out in October.

Crash victim identified

Grace Clapperton turned 100 on Sept. 16. She recently moved in to the Chartwell Kamloops Retirement Residence in North Kamloops. When asked the secret to her longevity, the centenarian replied with a smile: “Hard work, potatoes and red meat.” Clapperton lived in Kamloops for 75 of her years, raising three girls and a boy with her husband, a logger-turned-scaler, The couple then spent time farming in Barnhartvale.

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a Kamloops woman who died after a motor-vehicle incident in Vernon last week.

She is 55-year-old Susan Louise Delrose.

Delrose was the rear-seat passenger in a Honda SUV that was in a collision with a Chevrolet pickup truck at the intersection of Highway 97 and Westside Road in Vernon at about 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 20.

Police say the SUV was turning left onto the highway from Westside Road when it was broadsided by the eastbound truck.

Delrose died at the scene.

The 18-year-old woman driving the SUV along with a 54-year-old female passenger, both Kamloops residents, were seriously injured. The male driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

The BC Coroners Service and RCMP Traffic Services continue to investigate.

Feds’ spending to start year hits highest mark in at least six years: report THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA — Federal spending under the Liberal government kicked off the fiscal year by hitting its highest mark in at least six years, says a new analysis by the budget watchdog.

But some of the spending came from leftover commitments made by the previous Conservative government, the parliamentary budget officer's report said yesterday.

Jean-Denis Frechette found that expenditures under the Trudeau government were 5.7 per cent higher — nearly $3.4 billion — in the first quarter of 20162017, compared with the same period from the previous year.

Ottawa's first-quarter spending reached $62.9 billion, while over the same threemonth period last year the government paid out about $59.5 billion, the analysis found.

A chunk of the increased spending, including an extra $1.22 billion for childbenefit cheques, came from the Liberal government's Tory predecessor.

However, an additional $1.22 billion was the result of a 19 per cent Liberal increase in infrastructure-related spending.

Frechette's

report said the hefty increase, which was categorized under grants and contributions to outside entities, was disbursed at an “unprecedented” rate compared to recent years.

The Liberals have committed $11.9 billion towards infrastructure spending over two years as a way to help lift the sluggish economy.

It's unclear, however, exactly how much federal infrastructure spending over the first three months of the fiscal year came from pledges made by the Liberals and how much of it was left over from older Conservative commitments.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau was asked yesterday at a news conference how much of the extra spending identified by Frechette had translated into economic growth.

In his reply, Morneau said the Liberals entered government last year following a decade of low growth and after informing Canadians they intended to make investments in the economy.

“That's what you're seeing. . . We will continue to make those investments,” Morneau said in Toronto.

“It will result in, we

believe, stronger economic activity.

“Obviously, the money actually has to flow into the economy for that increase in economic activity to happen and we think that we'll start to see the results of that now and through the course of the next several quarters.”

He also said the government's fall economic and fiscal update will show how Liberal investments have started to have an economic impact.

Morneau would not say whether the update will also include policy measures, nor would he reply to a question whether the government would use any leftover fiscal space in its $6-billion contingency reserve to provide additional help to the weaker-thanexpected economy.

“We'll continue to monitor the effectiveness of the programs we have in place and we will look at the effects on the economy and we remain ready to continue to create policies that will enhance our growth over the short, medium and long term,” said Morneau, who made an infrastructure funding announcement yesterday at Ryerson University.

Government spending on infra-

structure is difficult to track because of its disbursement over extended time frames, as well as the constant re-packaging and re-announcement of various funds and projects.

The 2016 infrastructure numbers won't be available for months, but a recent scan of government tables showed that just six of 862 approved projects so far this year were actually underway.

Still, with the aim of stimulating the economy, the Liberals have said they want to dole out infrastructure money more quickly than in the past.

There's a little more push to get the money out of the door,” said assistant parliamentary budget officer Mostafa Askari.

“So, there's a different approach to it in terms of how the government is managing these funds.”

Frechette's report also said federal operating spending increased 3.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2016-2017 compared to a year before, despite a decrease in employee costs.

His report found direct capital spending fell 10.5 per cent, largely due to lower procurement spending by National Defence as a result of project delays.

Emergency response unco-ordinated after man fell off party boat: TSB THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO — The Transportation Safety Board says emergency response efforts after a man fell off a party boat in Lake Ontario last year weren’t co-ordinated.

Search efforts failed to locate 34-year-old Keith White after he fell from the Northern Spirit in June last year and drowned.

His body was recovered off the

Toronto shore 18 days later.

In its final report on the incident, the safety board says the passenger’s unsafe behaviour and intoxication led to him falling overboard.

But it also notes the crew didn’t realize White had been drinking when they allowed him on board and also continued to serve him alcohol.

The report further says the crew’s response to the emergen-

cy wasn’t co-ordinated because the signal to initiate the manoverboard procedure was not sounded.

It adds the crew had never performed any man-overboard drills.

The board is an independent agency that investigates marine, pipeline, railway and aviation transportation incidents. It does not assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability.

BANFF — A British globalization expert said if Americans elect Donald Trump as president in November, it will set back world harmony and be especially harmful for Canada because it’s “joined at the hip’’ with the United States.

Oxford University professor Ian Goldin said the advances in world health and wealth of the past few decades have come about in large part because of growing connectivity between people and nations.

Trump, the Republican Party candidate, represents the contrary view that the connected world is responsible for problems in the U.S., Goldin said.

He added that if Trump is able to put those ideas into force, it will result in a much more dangerous world and likely in lower standards of living for Americans.

He said a Trump-led country would

be less able to respond to global threats including climate change, pandemics, cascading financial crises and cyberattacks.

Goldin told reporters after a speech at the Global Business Forum in Banff that Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton is less likely to disrupt world unity because she is more experienced and more “predictable.’’

Trump has promised to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico, and pull the U.S. out of a proposed Pacific trade pact with 11 other nations if elected.

Trump and Clinton held their first debate this past Monday.

They have two more debates scheduled before the November election.

They will square off on Oct. 9 and Oct. 19.

Priests to refuse funerals?

EDMONTON — Guidelines from the Catholic Bishops of Alberta and the Northwest Territories say priests should refuse funerals for some people who choose assisted suicide.

The document describes how physician-assisted death is a “grave sin’’ and contradicts the teachings of the Catholic church.

It says priests should weigh the circumstances of each funeral request, but highprofile assisted deaths can’t be celebrated.

“If the church were to refuse a funeral to someone, it is not to punish the person but to recognize his or her decision — a decision that has brought him or her to an action that is contrary to the Christian faith, that is somehow notorious and public and would do harm to the Christian community and the larger culture,’’ says the document.

It also says families should be supported, but those who want to celebrate the assisted deaths of their loved ones can’t do it at a church funeral.

“This would be truly scandalous, as it would be an encouragement to others to engage in the evil that is euthanasia and assisted suicide. Such a request for funeral rites must be gently but firmly denied.’’

Last year, the Supreme Court struck down a ban on medically assisted dying.

In June, the federal government enacted a law allowing it for those in an advanced state of irreversible decline from an incurable condition and for those facing a “reasonably foreseeable’’ natural death.

The Catholic church allows funerals for people who have committed other types of suicide, say the guidelines, because their reasoning may not be clear.

Edmonton Archbishop Richard Smith believes the guidelines are the first to be issued by a group of bishops in Canada.

Church officials in Alberta had questions about assisted death when legislation was in the works, Smith said, and many thought guidelines were needed for last rites and funerals.

The document was signed by six bishops in the region.

Smith said bishops from other regions have asked him about the guidelines, but he doesn’t know of any who are planning to issue their own in the near future.

He also said he hasn’t heard that any priests in Alberta have yet dealt with an assisted death.

When it happens, they will have to weigh several factors, Smith suggested, including whether the person is repentant.

“The general principles are clear. The various situations in which they apply can be highly nuanced and diverse,’’ he said in a phone interview yesterday at a meeting of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in Cornwall, Ont. “It’s going to be the role of the priest in these situations to say how best do we bring all of this together — the care of the person, the care for the family, respecting the integrity of the sacraments?’’

If there can’t be a funeral, priests may agree to hold prayers at a graveside or funeral home, he said. The guidelines say a memorial mass is another option.

Shanaaz Gokool of Dying with Dignity Canada said she’s heard of people in Catholic nursing homes and hospitals having difficulty arranging assisted deaths.

She believes the guidelines are a “thinly veiled threat’’ by the church to followers considering assisted death.

“You tell people in the most vulnerable time in their lives — people who are frail and who are suffering — that if you want to access your charter right, your human right to an assisted death . . . then you’re going to have to make a choice between relieving your suffering and everything you may have believed in for however many years.

“It’s just appalling.’’

3 cups cubed fully cooked ham 1 package (10 ounces) frozen chopped broccoli, thawed 1 can (103/4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted 1 jar (8 ounces) cheese sauce 1 can (8 ounces) sliced water chestnuts, drained 11/4 cups uncooked instant rice 1 cup milk 1 celery rib, chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon paprika In a three-quart slow cooker, combine all of the ingredients except the paprika. Cover and cook on high for two to three hours or until the rice is tender. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with paprika.

Serves six to eight people.

The Circus is in town.

Nine semi trucks and a crew of local labourers will parade into Hillside Stadium this afternoon, prepping the facility for the debut of Nitro Circus in the Tournament Capital.

Tomorrow’s show begins at 3 p.m., but before some of the

best athletes in freestyle motocross can perform, the local soccer pitch will be transformed into an action sports Mecca.

Tournament Capital co-ordinator Sean Smith said the surface at Hillside Stadium will be well cared for, despite being overtaken by 40-foot ramps, motocross bikes and roughly 4,500 additional seats.

“It’s all protected,” Smith said.

The bikes will never come into contact with the turf and all contraptions used by Nitro Circus will be placed on metal bases, ensuring even distribution of the additional weight.

“They perform in some of the biggest stadiums in the world,” Smith said.

“A lot more expensive than ours, I’m sure.”

One of the most notable addi-

tions to the facility will be in terms of seating. Nitro Circus is expecting more than 4,500 fans to be in attendance.

The 1,400-person permanent grandstand at Hillside is expected to be full and 1,500 portable seats and 3,000 individual chairs will be added to the venue.

As significant as the conversion will be, Hillside will be returned to normal just as quickly. Nitro

Circus will begin cleanup immediately after the two-hour show ends.

“They’ll probably pack up and be gone by the end of Oct. 1,” Smith said, estimating the fleet of big rigs will be pulling out of Kamloops by 11 p.m.

“I think teardown goes pretty quick.”

The two-hour show will include more than 30 athletes.

Bob Lenarduzzi was pulling for Thompson Rivers University.

As president of Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps, Lenarduzzi had written a letter of support for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack in the program’s quest to host the 2017 CIS Men’s Soccer Championship in Kamloops.

In the interests of transparency at yesterday morning’s third annual WolfPack Scholarship Breakfast, Lenarduzzi admitted he also penned two other letters of support for national championship bids — one would suspect for the UBC

“Inwardly, I was hoping TRU did get it,” Lenarduzzi told the room of roughly 400 supporters yesterday.

“UBC, they didn’t say it, but they kind of assumed they’d get it.”

The annual breakfast is one of TRU athletics’ largest fundraising efforts, an event that generates funds for scholarships for the

school’s more than 160 student athletes.

The university vowed to match donations yesterday to a maximum of $100,000 and the effort got a solid start when the Kamloops Blazers’ Sports Legacy Fund dropped $25,000 in the pot.

Lenarduzzi’s soccer career includes time as a North American Soccer League star, a player for Canada at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games and 1986 World Cup and extensive time as a coach.

He’s a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame and the Order of

Vancouver Whitecaps’ president Bob Lenarduzzi had plenty to say at the TRU WolfPack’s annual scholarship breakfast yesterday, including that the Whitecaps Football Club 2 (WFC2) hopes to play a match in Kamloops “some time this year.”

soccer team at TRU, was in the midst of his pro career.

Harkening back to when he left home at 14 to move to England and pursue a soccer career, Lenarduzzi reflected yesterday on his own days of balancing education and sport. When he left home, he did so with a promise to his parents that he would continue his education.

“I never opened the box of books,” he said.

“It was a huge, huge regret.

“What you’re doing is you’re providing opportunities to young athletes to pursue both their academics and their athletics.”

A few highlights

Lenarduzzi fielded questions from the audience and reporters following his opening remarks.

• On his fondest memories from playing sports: “Actually, I didn’t make the first team I tried out for. I was a year younger.

“I was absolutely devastated that I didn’t make that team. I persevered and played at the age level I was supposed to. I remember that simply because I was devastated, but as a result of good parenting, my mom and dad both said, ‘Look, you’re going to face adversity. If you choose to feel sorry for yourself and not look to try to rebound from that, it’s going to impact you in the long haul.’ That was a lesson well learned.”

• On his first

national team coaching experience: “We played against the South Korean national team and we won the game 2-0. I can remember the sense of pride I felt, having played for the national team and having been to a World Cup. The opportunity to guide our country as the national team coach was something that I had been striving toward. I finally got the opportunity.

“It almost seemed surreal. I had six years with the national team, but that first game was a very, very special moment.”

• On his first game in a Canadian jersey, against the Polish national team: “I almost can walk through everything that happened in that game.

“I remember a slide tackle that I won vividly. . . . The fact that I can remember that as vividly as I can now means that it must have been a special moment.”

• On if he can put a finger on why the Whitecaps are struggling: “If I could, then we wouldn’t be in the state we are right now.

“We weren’t the only ones who were optimistic about this season. The pundits around the league were all suggesting we could win an MLS championship. So the fact that it went so far wrong is very frustrating.”

• On who’s going to win the English Premier League: “My hope is that Man City

doesn’t continue the results that they’re getting. I think it would be anticlimactic is they’re so far ahead that it becomes a one-horse race.

“I don’t think that will be the case. I think Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man United have all got chances.

But, if I’m to hazard a guess, I would say that Man City will be the champions.”

• On the favourites in the MLS: “That’s just so difficult. Last year, Portland was on the verge of not making the playoffs. They made the playoffs, beat us in the playoffs and then won the championship.

“I really believe that it could be anyone.”

• On his thoughts on the state of the Canadian men’s national program: “If you look at the top end and you look at what’s the most visible aspect of our national team, you’d be disappointed.

But we need to be looking down at development.

“The fact that we’ve got a league that our better young players can aspire toward, the fact that there’s talk of a Canadian soccer league, that’s what the best players need.

They need to be able to perform at a high level, they need to get pushed and then we find out, are they capable or not?

“I think the future is bright when I look at some of the young players we have in the system.”

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS STOLEN Sometime overnight on Sunday, September 25th, thieves broke into a vehicle that had been parked on Lansdowne St. The suspects stole a Yamaha guitar and two Antonious violins that were all in black carrying cases. All of these items can be easily identified by the owner, please see attached photo of the violin.

try to sell these items at a pawn shop or to a private citizen. This is a good warning that, if the cost of the item seems too good to be true, it could be stolen. The buyer of the stolen property can be charged with possession of stolen property under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Blue Wave rolls in Vernon The Westsyde Blue Wave cruised to victory in their first league game of the junior bantam season this week, stomping the Fulton Maroons 45-0 in Vernon.

Running back Talon St. Jean led the Blue Wave, scampering for 276 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Carson Day also played a strong game, throwing for 291 yards and four touchdowns.

Adam Buholzer and AJ McGinnis each caught two TD passes.

Defensively, Brennan Ettinger had seven tackles and three sacks, while forcing and recovering a fumble.

The Blue Wave will host their annual Friday Night Lights game on Oct. 14.

Storm watch

The Kamloops Storm (3-3-1) will look to get back in the win column this weekend

in Armstrong to face the North Okanagan Knights (1-3-1)tomorrow.

The B.C. Lions’ defence has a different approach to giving and receiving.

When it comes to pressuring the quarterback, the Leos liberally dish it out, their season total of 39 sacks trailing only the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (41), a team that has played one more game than B.C. When it comes to take-aways by interception, however, the Lions adhere to a much more polite doctrine, never asking for too much and only taking what is given to them. After 12 games, they’ve been considerate to the point of obsequiousness.

When rookie cornerback Anthony Gaitor intercepted Mike Reilly’s pass in the second quarter of Friday’s 27-23 loss to the Edmonton Eskimos, the pick instantly vaulted Gaitor into a five-way tie for the team lead.

He joins Ryan Phillips, Loucheiz Purifoy, Eric Fraser and two linebackers — Solomon Elimimian and Adam Bighill — at a single pick this season. The Lions’ team total of six is as many picks as league-leader Maurice Leggett of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and ranks the Lions eighth in that statistical measure, behind only the 3-10 Saskatchewan Roughriders, who have five.

The Lions are close to the middle of the pack in average points allowed and they’ve given up 27 touchdowns, second only to Montreal (26) in the number of six-point tries scored against them.

Their two premier defensive players — Elimimian and Bighill — are second and third, respectively, in the individual tackles race.

Moreover, the Lions have allowed opponents 16 touchdowns on passing plays, tied with the Ottawa Redblacks — tomorrow’s opponent at B.C. Place Stadium — and second only to Montreal (14) leaguewide.

Bitten by the long ball from time to time, the defence bending a little, but never breaking, what’s it really matter that a collective show of steel hands on contested throws is mitigated by a good rush and relentless, intimidating play from their linebackers?

“I’m not dissatisfied with our pressure on the quarterback,” says coach Wally Buono. “My biggest dissatisfaction [last game] was our [lack of] aggressiveness and our inability to make a play on the ball. I don’t think we’ve been overly good when the ball’s in the air — deep. It’s not every game, every throw and it’s not on one individual. But it’s enough.

“I would just like to see us come down with the ball more. I can probably think of 15-16 occasions when we should have come down with the ball, say, eight times.

Turnovers are what turns a game around.”

With today’s CFL an aerial spectacle as never before — 69 per cent of plays are throws — it’s a little baffling, and concerning on Buono’s part, that the Lions haven’t been heading more teams off at the pass.

“It’s been — I don’t want to say it — our nemesis,” he said. “We’ve not created enough turnovers — or knock-downs.

That’s an area where we have to improve.

And we know Ottawa is going to go after us, deep.”

In last Friday’s game in Edmonton, Phillips had a bead on a pick after Reilly unloaded a deep throw to Derel Walker.

But the veteran B.C. halfback couldn’t

handle the overthrow, his vision partly obscured by Walker. Sitting on 47 career interceptions — he had 46 coming into the season — Phillips is reminded of another drop, July 7 against Toronto, when Ricky Ray gift-wrapped him a pick six, only to have the Lions’ most accomplished ballhawk fumble the opportunity.

“Those are just two plays out of 750 or so,” Phillips argues. “At the end of the day, I don’t hang my head on two plays. My expectation level is high. That being said, any time I get my hands on the ball, I feel that I should get it.”

Brandon Stewart, the 10-year CFL veteran cornerback, has heard the ribbing for a long time that defensive back is the fallback position for athletes who can’t make it as receivers. “R.P. [Phillips] had 12 picks one season [2007]. You can’t tell me DBs can’t catch the ball,” Stewart said, with a chuckle.

The truth is, defensive backs have everything stacked against them. With the percentage of plays trending to the pass at an all-time high, having to defend against taller and heavier receivers, and with officials seemingly itching to throw their flags for the inadvertent bump or illplaced hand past the five-yard bump area, DBs constantly operate in a pressurized danger zone.

All that said, Stewart still knows the Lions “have to do a better job of squeezing the ball.”

“We’ve had our hands on so many [potential picks],” Stewart said. “We’re all hard-luck guys right now. We do want to create more interceptions. In my experience, when they come, they come in bunches. And we still have six games left.”

At a news conference yesterday, the Englishman and defending Masters champion apologized for at least the third time for an article his brother, Pete, wrote in the National Club Golfer ripping American fans.

Pete Willett described them as “pudgy, basement-dwelling irritants . . . pausing between mouthfuls of hotdog so they can scream ‘Baba booey’ until their jelly faces turn red.’’

Danny Willett had already apologized a day earlier to U.S. team captain Davis Love and then to the members of the U.S. squad.

“Obviously, it put a bit of a downer on my first Ryder Cup,’’ he said.

A vocal heckler walked the walk after talking the talk during the practice round yesterday.

Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan took multiple cracks at a 12-foot putt on No. 8 and missed every time. David Johnson, of Mayville, North Dakota, let them know about it, saying he could make the putt. Henrik Stenson pulled Johnson from the gallery and Justin Rose laid a $100 bill right next to the ball, daring Johnson to make it.

After wisecracking that the putter he was handed was too short, Johnson muttered, “home soil, right?’’ Then he drilled the putt, eliciting a roar from the crowd. Johnson pumped his arms wildly and earned high fives from the entire Euro foursome as they exited the green.

Phil Mickelson is apologizing for using Hal Sutton as an example of how a Ryder Cup captain can put players in a position to fail.

Mickelson’s comment dominated Ryder Cup talk on Wednesday as he dredged up his two losses with Tiger Woods at Oakland Hills 12 years ago when Sutton was captain. Mickelson says he was ill-prepared because Sutton only told them they were playing together that week and he had to adjust to a different golf ball.

The blessing of the Jews

J

ews make up about 0.2 per cent of the world’s population.

Yet, of all the peoples of the world, Jews have won 22 per cent of the Nobel prizes awarded between 1903 and 2015.

The Nobel prizes — peace, literature, chemistry, physics, economics and medicine — recognize superlative lifetime achievements or discoveries of the leaders in each of these fields.

Jews have dominated in economics since its introduction as an award category in 1969 (41 per cent).

They impress in the other areas as well (medicine 28 per cent, physics 26 per cent, chemistry 19 per cent, literature 13 per cent and peace nine per cent).

Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Franz Kafka and Benjamin Disraeli were all giants in their fields.

In other words, in areas of knowledge, achievement and leadership which benefit the entire human race, Jews continue to play a positive role disproportionately far greater than their percentage of the human family.

And it is not just in our present era that their contributions have been exemplary.

The historian Josephus, a contemporary of Jesus Christ, wrote compelling and interesting accounts of the life and times of his day.

Philosophers Philo, Maimonides and Spinoza had huge impacts on how we see the world.

The various authors of the Bible — Moses, Isaiah, Solomon, David, Paul, etc. have had an incalculable influence on the history of the last 2,000 years.

Then there’s Jesus — more on him later.

But just why is that?

It certainly isn’t because the rest of us — the gentiles — have

made it easy for them to survive as a people.

Mass deportations, destruction and occupation of their homeland, repeated pogroms and massacres, severe restrictions on where they could live and what occupations they could hold and, most lethally, Adolph Hitler’s final solution.

Anti-Semitic acts are practically daily occurrences around the world to this day.

Yet they continue to thrive and make a positive impact wherever they are permitted to exist as a people.

Some have suggested it is because of their very high regard for education and literacy.

While they certainly learned the languages of the peoples they lived among, they made it a point of pride to retain their own language, Hebrew, and treated with great esteem those who were scholars in the language, traditions and religion of their past.

I encountered this personally when I was in high school in Brantford, Ont., in the early 1970s.

Several of my classmates were Jewish.

They never came out for school sports, with their afternoon practices. After spending all day in regular school, they spent another couple of hours in Hebrew school, learning the language of their original homeland.

The role of the Jews as a “chosen” people of God has certainly been controversial over the centuries.

Benjamin Disraeli were all giants in their fields.

In other words, in areas of knowledge, achievement and leadership which benefit the entire human race, Jews continue to play a positive role disproportionately far greater than their percentage of the human family.

Why them?

The answer may be found in three short verses in the Book of Genesis.

Abraham was especially called by God to leave his home and family in modern day Iraq and move to the land we now know as Israel. God is quoted as saying: “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.

“I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great and you will be a blessing.

“I will bless those who bless you and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on Earth will be blessed through you.”

The last phrase of God’s promise to Abraham is one that has resonated through the ages, in two distinctive ways.

That “all peoples on Earth will be blessed” through the descendants of Abraham is certainly evident in the many wonderful contributions Jews have made (and won Nobel prizes for).

But all of that pales in comparison to the primary blessing bestowed through Abraham’s lineage: Jesus of Nazareth.

Even those who vigorously deny his divinity (including, ironically, most Jews) acknowledge he was

a great moral teacher: Love your neighbour as yourself; forgive those who persecute you; don’t seek revenge, but turn the other cheek; practise purity and fidelity in your intimate relationships; show kindness to everyone, including strangers and even enemies in your power; be merciful; spread the good news of God’s love everywhere; be generous with your wealth to the less fortunate, be faithful to God even if it costs you your life; live in such a way to make God proud of making you; and enjoy your eternal reward in paradise.

These teachings are a blessing to everyone.

The greatest blessing of all, however, is Jesus’ personal sacrifice of his own life, so we might have a way to heaven despite our sins.

None of us deserve this, but he freely gave it because of his great love for us.

And that is the most beautiful blessing of all.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Myrtle Westfall

Thomas Crichton Campbell

December 22, 1929 - September 23, 2016 It is with deep sadness that the family of Myrtle Ellen Westfall (nee Partridge) announces her passing on September 23, 2016 at the age of 86.

She was predeceased by her husband Frederick and her parents Pevril and Ellen. She is survived by her brother Bob (Julie), son Gary (Frida), daughters Linda (Barry), Donna (Michael) and Laurie (Ron). Also grandchildren Mark and Colin, Darcy, Angie, Lindsay, Shay, Scott, Corey, Sean, Jennifer, Ashley and all spouses. Myrtle also had sixteen great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.

Myrtle was born in Saltcoats, Saskatchewan, she grew up in Naramata, schooled and worked in Penticton, where she met and then married Fred in 1951. They raised four children in Nelson, Prince George and finally Kamloops. Mom worked in the hospitality industry and finally as a Homemaker for Kamloops Home Support before retiring. She enjoyed travelling, camping, crafting and gardening.

The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses, who cared for Mom at Royal Inland Hospital and Kamloops Hospice Society.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 08, 2016, at 2:00 pm at Kamloops Funeral Home, 285 Fortune Drive, Kamloops.

In lieu of flowers, moms’ charity wishes were, Gideon Bible Society, Dystonia Medical Research, New Life Mission, Crossroads or charitable organization of choice.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tom Campbell at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC. Tom leaves behind his wife of 63 years Betty, son Crichton (Julie Ann), grandson Tommy, daughter Kathryn (Gardner). He will also be missed by caring cousins, nieces and nephews and many friends made over the years.

Special Memories include life on Big Shuswap Lake, fishing trips to Pender Harbour, then later at Quadra Island, 40 years of skiing and socializing at Silver Star Mountain Resort, hunting for elk and exploring southeastern BC, exploring and travelling in Canada and further afield.

Predeceased by his father Crichton, mother Lucy Anne and sister Faye, all of Kamloops, BC. A Memorial Gathering will be held when all our family can be together, probably early November.

Donations in memory of Thomas Campbell to the Intensive Care Unit at Royal Inland Hospital, 311 Columbia Street, Kamloops, BC V2C 2T1 would be appreciated.

Ray was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He lived and worked in Hong Kong, London, England, Toronto, Kamloops before retiring in Vancouver.

Deeply loved and sadly missed by his surviving wife Helen, sons Mark (Karen) and Franklin (Pamela) and beloved grandchildren Kamryn, Logan and Abigayle, two brothers and three sisters, twenty-eight nephews and nieces, many, many beautiful grandnephews and grandnieces, other relatives and numerous friends.

In memory of Ray, donations may be made to the Vancouver General Hospital (where Ray received a lot of treatments) or The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

It is with great shock and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Julianne (Juli) Rae Lion on September 24th, 2016 at the age of 19 while visiting at home in Kamloops, BC. Juli is survived by her parents Rob and Cyndi, brothers Robert (Christine) and Jason, grandparents (John and Anne Lion, Chris and Marc Johnson), as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. She leaves behind a strong network of friends, including her boyfriend (Kevin) and her beloved “fur siblings” Jackson and Zoe. Juli was predeceased by her Grandpa Jim, Uncle Russell, and cousin Darin to whom she had a strong connection.

Throughout high school, Juli played on the Sa-Hali Secondary rugby team and badminton team. She enjoyed zumba, kickboxing, and most recently roller derby.

As a child, Juli took acting classes and was very skilled at dramatizing TV shows this skill carried forward into her wonderful ability to recount daily stories from her work in customer service.

She loved gathering with her cousins and relatives at family reunions held across Canada and the US every other year. She was very close to her cousin Ciara and the two were inseparable as children.

Juli had recently started the Human Kinetics Degree Program at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna and was excited to become a healthcare professional. Her past volunteer work as a candy striper at Royal Inland Hospital helped form her decision to pursue education in a health profession.

A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, October 1st, 2016 at 3:30 pm in the Calvary Temple.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kamloops Raven program or Options Okanagan Treatment Centre in Kelowna. Juli also loved animals so a donation to the SPCA would be appropriate.

Allan (Al) Tassell Allan (Al) Tassell passed away peacefully on August 9th, 2016 at the age of 92, predeceased by his wife Kit in 2014.

Al was born in Vancouver, BC in 1923 and was lovingly raised by the Rennies and father Wilfred in the Okanagan. Al joined the Navy as a boy seaman, serving two tours of duty in the North Atlantic and two tours in the Pacific during the Korean conflict where rumour has it “my hair was shot off in the war”, according to our kids.

Mark (Teresa), ten grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren, as well as many friends.

We will all miss him dearly.

His final thoughts are captured in this poem he liked; he said “it said it all”.

Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little – but not too long And not with your head bowed low.

Remember the love that we once shared, Miss me – but let me go.

He retired from the navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1965. After his service, he took a job with IPEC Engineering working on the Peace River Dam project until landing a job at the Dockyard in Esquimalt where he finished his career in 1983.

For this is a journey that we all must take And each must go alone.

It’s all a part of the Master’s plan, A step on the road to home.

After 50 years in Victoria, raising their children, Al and Kit moved to Kamloops to carry on their adventures. Al was a boater for many years, enjoyed traveling, cruising, golfing and the company of family and friends. He seemed to know someone in every town he visited. He always knew their names and had a story to tell.

When you are lonely and sick of heart Go to the friends we know.

Laugh at all the things we used to do Miss me- But let me go!

Al’s true character showed through when someone needed help. A kind word, a story to ease the pain or his willingness to lend a hand to make life a little easier that was his trademark.

He was a kind, loving man with an appetite for books, a joke, a good steak and a dark beer.

Doreen Clark It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doreen Clark on September 16, 2016 at 82 years of age.

Doreen will be greatly missed by her sister Shirley, children Tracy, Bruce, Max, and grandchildren Robert (Lindsay), Valerie, Justin (Faith) and Alyssa.

Doreen is predeceased by her partner of 25 years Andre Couture, brother Ted, mother Doris and father Wallace.

Doreen was greatly involved with Anavets Ladies Auxilary #290 for the past 27 years and was honoured with a lifetime membership in 2015. Her passions in life were cooking and baking, her grandchildren and hockey. She will be remembered for her cookies and tarts and her buttered buns at the Anavets.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Anavets #290, 9-177 Tranquille Road, Kamloops at 10:30 am.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Rose Marie Lemieux (Bellemare) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rose Lemieux at the age of 68 at the Kamloops Hospice Association in Kamloops, BC following a short and courageous battle with cancer.

She left the world peacefully, with her husband Bob, close family members and friends at her side on Wednesday, September 28, 2016.

Rose was born Rose Bellemare on January 25, 1948 in Timmins, ON. She was the third child and the first girl in a family that would eventually be comprised of nine boys and three girls. Growing up in a large family, Rose had to take on responsibilities which contributed to her strong work ethics which stayed with her until her retirement at the age of 67. Rose held numerous positions throughout her working career that culminated with her many years of property management with the Kelson Group in Kamloops.

Having a love for travel, Rose enjoyed her many trips with their dear friends Ted and Laura to Mexico as well as numerous trips across Canada to visit family. Following her retirement in 2015, Rose and Bob embarked on a three months trip throughout the States and across Canada. As well, she enjoyed her weekends at the lake with their motorhome. Rose enjoyed life to the fullest and was always the shining light in the family.

Her sense of humour and practical jokes will be missed by all of her siblings.

Rose was always the Giver and the Caretaker. She never wanted to be praised for helping those

less fortunate and took great pleasure in offering a helping hand to those in need. The last couple of months saw a reversal where Rose was the one requiring care and this would have been really hard for her to accept.

Rose will be missed by her husband and best friend of 31 years Bob, her daughter Laurie Ann Watters (Grande Prairie), granddaughter Kyla Lynne Watters (Kamloops) and the pride of her life great-grandson Mathyus (Kamloops) and stepson Marc McNulty and family (Timmins, Ontario).

Rose was predeceased by parents Alfred and Jeanette Bellemare, brothers Roger and Claude, sister-in-law Lynne Bellemare, father-in-law Gilles Lemieux and brother-in-law Andy Chartrand. She is survived by brothers and sisters – Raymond (Donna), Donald, Ernest (Lynne), Robert (Joan), Suzanne, Ronald (Starr), Dennis, Richard (Sherri), and Rachelle (Mike Regan). She is also survived by her mother-in-law Jeanne Lemieux. Rose will be sadly missed by her numerous nephews and nieces and her many friends.

A special thank you to the Team on floor 5 North at the Royal Inland Hospital as well to the Staff at Kamloops Hospice Association for their compassionate care of Rose these last couple of months.

A Celebration of Life for Rose will be held in Kamloops at 1:00 PM on Monday, October 03, 2016 at Schoening Funeral Service. A further service and burial will be held in Timmins, ON at a later date.

Show a ‘celebration of high school life’

D

avid Paperny has always wanted to take a hard look at life in a Canadian high school.

The TV producer said when he plans documentaries, he likes “taking audiences into places they might not get to.”

The two goals came together when, after considering more than 250 potential schools, Paperny chose South Kamloops secondary to be the site of what became the six-episode This Is High School.

It premieres on Sunday on CBC and continues for five Sundays afterward at 8 p.m.

Each episode will tell the stories of two students, interwoven with general observations about life at the school.

The first episode, Grade 9 is the Worst Year, focuses on a young boy

being sent to the vice-principal’s office frequently and a teen girl who finds herself bullied.

Paperny said South Kamloops was chosen because it has a diverse range of students “and an outstanding calibre of teachers and administrators who would welcome us in.”

Earlier this year, the school was outfitted with 50 remote-controlled cameras that ran for eight weeks.

Staff, teachers, students and parents had to agree to allow recording of whatever happened in the classrooms, hallways, offices and even the detention area.

The students whose individual stories will be told have already seen their parts, Paperny said, and have said they’re “proud to have a snapshot of their lives.”

Telling their own stories brought a sense of empowerment, even though those stories come with scenes that aren’t always complimentary. The young boy, for exam-

ple, is in the vice-principal’s office often as he struggles with his behaviour and the administrator tries to find a way to connect and redirect the energy.

The solution comes on the sports field.

The girl is upset her former best friend has a new group of friends and, when she hears the friend has said nasty things about her, she spirals into a depression. School counsellors work with the two to clear up the issue and repair the friendship — but also the new reality that friends sometimes move on.

“They both felt it was a fair and honest and respectful portrayal of who they are,” Paperny said.

Some of the footage comes from direct interviews with students who knew they were miked, being recorded and were asked to explain themselves.

treatment,” Paperny said.

The series captures the world of the high-school student, he said, dealing with issues like fitting in, self-image, anxiety, autism, popular girls, the need to excel — “finding out what is going on in schools today when the key challenge is transition.

“I have some strong memories of my own high school years,” Paperny said. “It’s a great age but it’s a difficult age, too.”

There’s another message in the series beyond the challenges of the students, he added.

“At the end of the day, we felt the show is a celebration of high school life and students and a celebration of the key role of teachers.”

While the series will tell 12 stories during the six weeks, other stories culled from the many hours of footage will be available online.

On the Tuesday after each episode, students at South Kamloops secondary will be invited to talk about the issues the episode addressed through a Facebook Live online conversation.

Others can also take part and, said producer David Paperny, the hope is a national conversation can begin about the issues students face.

“A lot of effort went into it,” he said, “and we wanted to be part of starting a national conversation. We want people talking about it online, at water coolers, across the country, talking about high school life today.”

The sessions will begin at 4 p.m.

Young’s $6M digital music venture a dud Audition for

I

n 2011, Canadian musical legend Neil Young took up a crusade.

Young is rather well known for his advocacy of social and political causes, but this cause was for digital music. He founded Ponomusic in an effort to bring higher standards and quality to digital music.

Young claimed digital music was recorded at too low of a bit-rate and frequency.

Digital players were unable to bring the quality of CDs to a digital platform, so Young wanted to raise the quality of that music.

His idea was a new digital audio player, one that would play higher quality digital music and bring sonic excellence to the mp3 format.

Thus was launched the PonoPlayer, or Pono for short.

In 2015, Young raised $6 million for the PonoPlayer, much

EDIT more than he needed, and prototypes began appearing.

The Pono would sell for $400 and promised higher fidelity.

Today, the buzz around the Pono is all but gone.

Ponomusic.com is strangely devoid of a music download store.

Not even Neil Young’s music is available for download right now.

It’s looking more and more like Neil Young has become the modern-day equivalent of a snake oil salesman.

What happened?

Well, a combination of reasons have doomed the Pono.

First of all, the science behind Young’s claims about digital music doesn’t hold up.

Young claimed CD-quality digital music, which is recorded at 44.1 kHz and 16-bit sampling, is poor quality for headphone listening.

The Ponoplayer would play an even more rigorous standard of 192 kHz and 24-bit.

Pono claimed this format contained six times more information than a CD ripped file.

But audio science says the human ear simply can’t tell the difference between these two formats.

In fact, in an article published in the Journal of Audio Engineering Society, a double-blind test was done with “serious audiophiles,” which found even the most discriminating ears couldn’t tell the differ-

ence between a ripped CD file and a highquality audio file.

In addition, tech writer David Pogue did a similar test for Yahoo, showing in a YouTube video that average listeners couldn’t tell the difference between audio from an iPod and audio from a Pono.

In fact, more listeners picked the iPod as superior to the Pono.

Pogue also pointed out the Pono’s price of $400 was much more than an iPod of the same size and the Pono had a smaller storage capacity — 64 gigabytes — compared to similar iPods.

The touch screen on the ungainly triangular Pono broke easily.

And because the high resolution of the files on Pono took up to 24 times as much space, you had much less music taking up a lot more space for an audio quality that just couldn’t be heard by

the majority of human beings.

Itunes, in general, doesn’t offer audio below CD-quality standards.

In fact, most audio in digital formats is at least 128 kHz and 16 bits which is well above CD quality.

And CD quality is already a very good quality file.

So, what Pono offers is a high-quality audio experience that literally almost no one can hear.

Ponomusic.com claims its music catalogue is “temporarily offline while we move to a new partner.”

We’ll have to wait and see if anyone will buy into Young’s travelling snake oil show in the future.

Although the film is not being shot in the Kamloops area — production will be in Italy — the Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s film commission has released an audition opportunity for a movie directed by Steven Spielberg.

Specific information is online at castittalent. com/TKOEM in the search for a six- to nine-year old boy who appears to be a Jewish-Italian child (but need not speak Italian). The movie is based on the true story of Edgardo Mortara, a six-year-old Jewish boy secretly baptized by a maid and then seized by the Papal State and taken to the Vatican to be taught Catholicism. Deadline is today.

Arts Council funding available

New exhibit at KAG

All Membranes Are Porous, an exhibit that brings together works by six artists, recently opened at the Kamloops Art Gallery.

he Painted Pony Cafe is making its international debut as one of the stops featured on season two of Moosemeat & Marmalade, airing on the Aboriginal People’s Television Network (APTN).

The restaurant serving traditional aboriginal fare opened its doors in the city two years ago.

The Painted Pony is at Victoria Street and Seventh Avenue downtown.

Moosemeat & Marmalade is less YouGotta-Eat-Here and more of a demonstration of farm-to-table cooking by the series’ hosts, bush cook Art Napoleon and classically trained British chef Dan Hayes.

“There’s not a lot of indigenous restaurants, so luckily there’s one in the Okanagan and one in Kamloops, one in Vancouver,” Napoleon said. “It made sense to feature them in the show and to use their facilities for cooking and for dining.”

Moosemeat & Marmalade follows the pair as they explore “cultures and traditions through the way we access, cook and present our food.”

Hayes moved to Victoria from London

nine years ago, founding the cooking school and catering company The London Chef.

Napoleon is no stranger to the public eye, having found his calling as TV personality and Cree musician. He hails from the Saultieu First Nation in northeastern B.C. The pair met when Hayes catered an event for the APTN television series Tiga Talk featuring Napoleon.

“I think he was holding a toy rifle and we got talking about hunting and one thing lead to another and it all started, which was very fun,” Hayes said.

Moosemeat & Marmalade sees the pair travel the globe experiencing “classic and not-so-classic” cuisines, celebrating food sustainability, foraging, fishing, big-game hunting and food production ethics.

Both have a unique connection to the culinary arts — Napoleon having grown up on a remote reserve, spending much of his adolescence around smokehouses and hunting wild game. Hayes is a classically trained chef who introduces Napoleon to fine ingredients and French cooking terminology, but he insists the two men are not so different.

“The funny thing about the show, and the thing that actually makes it more inter-

esting, is it would be very straightforward if Art didn’t know what a kitchen looked like and I didn’t know what a gun looked like,” Hayes said.

“The fact of the matter is, Art is a fabulous cook and I’m a hunter. All my life I’ve hunted.

“Where it becomes interesting is he’s far more comfortable cooking over a fire, whereas I’m far more comfortable cooking in a kitchen.”

Hayes and Napoleon utilized the Painted Pony kitchen to prepare freshly caught rainbow trout. The crew visited Logan Lake’s Mile High Resort for an ice-fishing expedition on Face Lake to catch the main ingredient — a new experience for Hayes, who said his many years of fishing had never taken him to any frozen lakes.

Napoleon said they hoped to catch burbot (freshwater lingcod), which can be found in Kamloops Lake.

However, the lake wasn’t frozen over and they had to travel to a higher elevation to ice fish. The hosts also stopped at Sorrento’s Crannóg Ales — Canada’s first certified organic farmhouse microbrewery — for an Irish ale before visiting Kamloops.

wirling through the thick brush strokes and intense colours of Steve Coffey’s paintings are thoughts of a man deep in existential reflection.

He calls Paint Songs, his recent release of paired songs and oil paintings, somewhat of a midlife crisis album. But labelling it as such minimizes Coffey’s greater contribution to the Western Canadian art and music worlds. Always a bit of a stubborn hardnose (his words), Coffey’s defiance manifests in everything he does.

The Hampton Gallery’s fall art show Under Sun and Sky begins tomorrow, featuring original works

by Coffey and other artists. Located at 167 4th Ave., refreshments will be served throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the exhibit will be on display until Oct. 28.

The man who goes his own way trope is a little overdone, but in Coffey’s case, it’s true.

He’s always resisted conventional album release-promotion-tour routines, and avoids pushing hard at forcing an audience to appreciate his work, instead opting to accept gigs that happen to come his way.

Giving up city life in Calgary in the early 2000s for a sweet spot in Vulcan, Coffey became entranced by his surroundings — big skies and open fields — and oriented his output entirely around what he saw every day.

“I’ll never run out of information,” he says. “I’m always trying to get better, I’m always trying to improve.

“That’s my mission. At this time in my life, I’m so absorbed with this challenging palette with our landscapes, to try and portray light in such a way.”

Don’t expect a photographic replica of his external world, though.

Using what he calls memory Polaroids (snapshots he locks down in his mind for later use), Coffey takes advantage of the nebulous nature of memory to make surrealist works: “I don’t want it to have a photographic quality, I want something that’s a little more atmospheric.”

As the last few years of change and turmoil came rushing into his mind during a trip to Europe last summer, Coffey realized his next project had to merge visual art — in which he’s formally trained — with music.

Sorting through the point he was at in his career, with a huge art catalogue and several albums with a variety of groups (most recently The Lokels) with his own personal changes culminated in a set of songs and paintings that burst forth as

soon as he returned home.

The result is Paint Songs, a hardcover book that comes in two sizes and pairs lyrics with paintings inside to match each song.

The creative force Coffey experienced is immediately apparent: bold colours and thick lines contrast sharply against the stark white pages of lyrics.

While some of the pairings indicate stasis and contemplation, as in Paint by Number or All In, (where lyrics ask, “Do you have a place to rest?” beside a cozy, dark bedroom), others have an urgent quality to them.

Times like These features a turbulent sky above a mountainous backdrop, while car headlights flash through a dusky landscape in Ah Ha Ha Ya. My own favourite is So Nice. I love the leaning of the couple against a storm, one streak of lightning flashing down in front of them, while they think about The Band playing The Last Waltz on their way home.

Leaning, Coffey agrees, is the key to magic: “I really want to create something that is leaning into art, however it needs to be done.

We removed many of the rules and tried to create a physical thing that is reflecting whatever madness was going on in my brain, I guess.”

Also showing works at Hampton Gallery alongside Coffey are Peter Stuhlmann and Jane Armstrong.

Stuhlmann lives in Chase and came to art at the age of four, when being sidelined due to a broken leg led to an interest in drawing.

Opting for a career that had a reliable income, Stuhlmann decided to forego art and work in the culinary arts.

However, after moving from Ottawa to Chase, his interest in water colours and other art took hold again.

In 2007, he became a full-time artist creating works from sylized landscapes to narratives with surrealistic lines.

Armstrong lives and works in West Vancouver. She also works in water colour, but also in oils and acrylics.

Armstrong began her career in 1992 and became a full-time artist in 2003.

Her work is big, bold, colourful and textured.

Are you right for role in film?

The production team behind Indian Road Trip is casting four speaking roles for the film by Allan Hopkins.

Auditions are on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Green Room at Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, 415 Belshaw St., in Merritt. Auditions are for a female nine years of age, a male seven years old, mother and father, both around 30 years old and fit. All characters are blonde with fair complexions.

The four characters have up to four lines in the opening scene of the film.

Filming will be in Merritt on Oct. 11.

The comedy is about two bored First nations teenagers forced to drive a cranky elder to visit her dying sister. It becomes apparent a supernatural force is trying to stop the journey.

Hopkins, who will also direct the film, was chosen through the Whistler Aboriginal Filmmaker Fellowship Program.

arney Bethell’s newest project started with a pair of good walking shoes and a camera.

Bethell and partner Bill Barker would hike the draws and backroads of Knutsford, where the allure of grass and dreams of successful farming drew ranchers and homesteaders a century ago.

Today, the mostly collapsed wood structures are a testament to their determination running into the hard reality that Knutsford gets little rain; finding groundwater is like searching for a needle in a field of bunchgrass.

On Saturday, from noon to 4 p.m., Bethell will be at the Kamloops Chapters Bookstore, 1395 Hillside Dr., signing copies of her latest project: Knutsford Homesteads and Barns.

Buildings featured include a collapsed one-room schoolhouse shown in a series of photos as time ravages the structure, to historic buildings that have been maintained.

Nestled on the city’s south boundary, Knutsford remains largely undeveloped due to its climate and limited access to water.

While it is dotted with ranchettes, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District severely restricts development today due to the scarcity of groundwater.

“There’s no water up here to speak of,” Bethel told KTW. “It’s all dryland farming.”

With irrigation, many Interior farmers can cut as many as

four crops of hay. In Knutsford, it’s a single cut.

That economic reality squelched the dreams of many homesteaders. But their efforts remain visible on the range of bluebunch wheatgrass, much of it owned today by ranching giant Frolek Cattle Co. A retired teacher, Bethell used her experience creating books for classrooms for a series of photo-based projects she has produced.

Those include a children’s book based on the exploits of the couple’s border collie and a book and teaching guide based on images her physician father, Dr. Ernie Jarman, took when he was stationed in a remote Northwest

Territories community in the 1950s.

Bethell’s books are all produced with the familiar method she used in teaching, using heavy stock with a spiral binding that can be placed flat on a table without destroying the spine. She invested in a high-end printer, which she uses to produce her books. She binds them herself.

It is a more costeffective method of producing a book compared to the traditional route of a vanity press.

Bethell has registered Knutsford Homsteads and Barns with Library Archives Canada and it has been issued an ISBN number.

Knutsford Homesteads and Barns is a natural extension of Bethell living in the community.

Her partner has lived in Knutsford since the early 1960s and traces his roots to a grandfather who moved there in 1908

to homestead.

Despite that deep knowledge, the couple recently learned of a historic building neither had seen before.

They obtained permission from Frolek Cattle Co. and other landowners for access.

The photos, however, were the easy part.

“People were always asking, ‘Whose place was that?’ Bethell said.

“There’s not a lot of information available.”

She used anecdotal information from Knutsford residents, as well as area history recounted in locally produced Bunch Grass to Barbed Wire.

“I talked to people, did research, went online and followed family obituaries,” Bethell said, noting the project has produced enough interest that she is in the early stages of producing a followup book.

“Now I have people coming to me saying, ‘Why didn’t you have a picture of our barn?’”

nyone who has read Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods will have a certain appreciation for the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Mountains in

Georgia.

Yet, for all his humour, descriptions of his torturous hike never talked about the almost mystical beauty of the region where in spring, wild rhododendrons wash the forest floor with soft pink and honeysuckles scent the fresh, mountain air.

It’s one of the finest times of year to explore the Appalachian Trail.

The early-season hiking crowds have long gone and the heat and humidity of high summer have yet to come.

THE CHALLENGE

To Native Americans, the word Appalachian means endless, so the trail is aptly named.

This is the longest footpath in the world, winding through 14 states and, at times, over some of the most challenging terrain on the continent.

Although more than 2,500 people attempt the entire trail each year, fewer than 25 per cent actually complete it, and more than 500 hikers quit after the first 13 kilometres.

If you’re a thru-hiker — diehards and Bryson-style wannabes who have set aside six months of their lives to complete the 3,492-kilometre trek up to Maine — be sure to do your homework.

Plan your logistics around one of the many hiker-friendly towns along the way so pick-ups can be easily co-ordinated and supplies aren’t such an issue.

There are also rustic lean-tos spaced at approximately 16-kilometre intervals along the trail that are popular rest-havens, although they can get cosy with like-minded souls seeking refuge.

If you’re an enthusiastic trail-blazer, section hikes can take as many days or weeks as you can spare, and if you’re simply a casual hiker who needs a few hours to reconnect with nature, you won’t be disappointed.

THE JOURNEY

Springer Mountain, an easy two-hour drive from Atlanta, marks the southern terminus of the Appalachian.

Most thru-hikers stop at Gainesville for supplies and catch a shuttle or taxi to the trailhead.

As might be expected, the first section, Benton MacKaye Trail near Ellijay, Blue Ridge, is named for the man who, in 1921, dreamed up the idea of this mountain walkway; it runs for 290 miles to eastern Tennessee.

The 129-kilometre stretch through Georgia traverses the primitive areas of the Chattahoochee National Forest and consequently, features some pretty rugged wilderness hiking.

About 50 kilometres into the trail, you’ll come to Mountain Crossings, a tiny stonewalled store that offers all the supplies hikers realize they really need, plus cabin rentals, showers, real toilets and laundry services.

Here’s where to find the legendary shoe tree adorned with boots galore as well as the boot museum — its sole determination is to collect 2,170 pairs of worn and tattered hiking boots, one pair for each mile on the Appalachian Trail.

Boots must have at least 1,609 kilometres or more on the Appalachian Trail and boots with double that are greatly appreciated.

Although the Georgia part of the trail is lower than in nearby North Carolina and Tennessee (where peaks rise to some 6,000 feet), you can still expect many steep ascents (and descents) so packing a hoard of energy-boosting vitamins is a must.

The forested paths are beautiful with blossoming dogwoods and mountain laurel. As the spring rains give way to wildflowers such as trillium and wild azalea, the air becomes as fragrant as the scenery is stunning.

If you’re lucky, you’ll find tracks of black bears, bobcats and white-tailed deer or hear the high shrill of red tailed hawks, the melodic song of the whip-poor-will, or see an eagle gliding across an air current. Little wonder that the Cherokee once called this region their Enchanted Land.

And, in case you were wondering?
