A special prosecutor has approved four criminal charges against a Kamloops deputy sheriff who allegedly tried to contact a minor for sex in what was in reality a vigilante sting.

Kevin Johnston is charged with three counts of communicating with an underage person for the purpose of sex and one count of an invitation to sexual touching. The minimum sentence on a conviction of luring an underage person is one year in prison.

The criminal justice branch appointed senior Vancouver lawyer Michael Tammen to oversee prosecution. Special prosecutors are utilized to avoid potential of bias when dealing with police or politicians, for example.

The branch said Johnston, a longtime sheriff at the Kamloops courthouse, “is no longer employed with the B.C. public service.”

involved with the vigilante group in a Kelowna parking lot.

A vehicle allegedly belonging to Johnston appears in the video to have been driven from Kamloops to Kelowna to meet a fictional teenager with whom the group claims he had been flirting online.

Another video uploaded by the group shows member Steph Cotts apparently talking on speakerphone with Johnston.

In the conversation, Johnston appears to admit a person he had been chatting with online described herself as a 14-year-old girl.

He also appears to admit to sending nude photographs to the person and offering instruction about how to perform lewd acts.

The branch said the allegations stem from Aug. 8 to Aug. 27. Tammen was appointed Sept. 2 and given a mandate to provide legal advice to Kelowna RCMP investigators and assume conduct of the prosecution.

Johnston is scheduled to appear in Kelowna provincial court on Oct. 20.

The former developer of Tobiano resort is expected to announce today a bid for the B.C. Liberal nomination in Kamloops-North Thompson.

Mike Grenier issued a press release yesterday indicating he will make an announcement Thursday morning during a press conference at Kamloops Airport.

Reached yesterday, Grenier said it’s “not an unfair expectation” that he will announce he is seeking the nomination. He otherwise declined to speak about a potential bid.

“It’s a political announcement and I’ll answer a lot of questions tomorrow,” Grenier said.

Grenier is a member of the B.C. Liberal and federal Conservative parties. He owns a home at Sun Peaks.

after a company controlled by his family purchased what was then Six Mile Ranch.

He gathered political and widespread support among business leaders and residents to take the ranchland out of the Agriculture Land Reserve for a housing development, which eventually became Tobiano, the residential development and golf course along Kamloops Lake, about 15

minutes west of the city, just before Savona.

The then-NDP government granted it a special exemption in what was a controversial move in the rest of the province.

Grenier lost control of the development five years ago, when it went into receivership. He had later involvement in management of Tobiano Golf Course.

Grenier’s entrance into the Kamloops-North Thompson Liberal race would bring to three the number of people seeking the nomination.

North Shore Business Improvement Association executive director Steven Puhallo and Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar are running to replace MLA Terry Lake, who announced on Sept. 1 he would not be seeking a third term in the May 9, 2017, provincial election.

A nomination date has yet to be set.

The race will boil down to whichever candidate can sign up the most members and ensure they attend the meeting and cast their ballots.

One potential home for a safeinjection centre in Kamloops has already taken itself out of the running.

ASK Wellness executive director Bob Hughes said his organization has told Interior Health it cannot house a supervised consumption program.

The Interior Health Authority hopes to apply to Health Canada for an exemption required to bring one or two safe-injection spaces to the city to deal with a rapid rise in overdose deaths in the region.

In the first six months of 2016, 22 people died of overdoses in Kamloops, compared to seven during the same period in all of 2015.

But Hughes told KTW he is skeptical a space for users to take their pre-obtained drugs with medical supervision will be much help unless better housing and detox options are also available.

“What we believe is really at the heart of this being effective is having direct access to detox facilities and direct access to housing, and what we’ve seen in our community is there’s been a dearth of housing investment in our community by the province,” he said.

“These people would remain homeless, they’d remain living outside and we would ghettoize.”

ASK’s announcement comes on the heels of a North Shore Business Improvement Association announcement that about 77 per cent of its members would not support a safe-injection site within the Tranquille Market area.

Of the 224 businesses canvassed by the association last week, 172 were against the site.

General manager Steven Puhallo said the concern stems from the “massing of services like this on the North Shore” and questions about Interior Health’s longterm strategy.

Hughes said the North Shore is already seeing the effects of greater police and bylaw enforcement downtown and on the riverbanks, which have pushed the city’s transient population into the Tranquille area.

“I think there’s really good evidence for the business association and the Friends of McDonald Park to look at this with significant skepticism and say we’ve been here before, we’ve been the dumping ground for all of the social ills,” he said.

Hughes said successful supervised consumption sites work with populations that are housed or have housing to offer their clients.

“Insite has a massive budget and they have access to detox and second-stage housing,” Hughes said of the safe-injection site in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

“And until those services are in place and applied to this project, we’re not prepared to provide the service in our facilities.”

Poll finds majority of NS businesses opposed to sites in their area A poll has found many North Shore businesses are opposed to a safeinjection site being located in their area.

In August, the North Shore Business Improvement Association asked businesses: “Would you support or approve of a supervised injection site being located within the North Shore business area, particularly in the Tranquille Market corridor?”

NSBIA executive director Steven Puhallo said 224 businesses responded, with 172 (77 per cent) opposed and 52 (23 per cent) in support.

“We reached out to as many businesses as we were able to over the course of August once we saw the media reports saying this was being considered for Kamloops,” Puhallo said. “Our business community is very concerned and worried about having a site like this on the North Shore, particularly in the Tranquille Market area.”

“We reviewed the results at our recent board of directors meeting and a lot of questions were raised.” he said.

“We’re in discussion with the Interior Health Authority about getting

more information on this controversial project. We will be working with them and other advocates around this service to bring information about it to our members.

“Our members’ primary concern is the massing of services like this on the North Shore and what the long-term strategy and game plan is around this form of harm reduction.”

Dr. Silvina Mema, a medical health officer with the IHA, appeared before council Tuesday to talk about the health authority’s efforts to deal with the rising number of

drug overdoses in the region.

Mema previously told KTW she hopes to see a safe-injection site — where users could take both prescription and street drugs they have obtained in advance under trained medical supervision — opened in the Tournament Capital before the end of the year.

She said Interior Health wants to locate the site alongside an existing service that works with people who could benefit from safe consumption services.

“It would not be a standalone consumption site,” she wrote.

A plan to bring at least one safe-injection site to Kamloops has early support from city council.

Councillors voted unanimously Tuesday to give support in principle to the Interior Health Authority’s proposal to set up as many as two supervised consumption sites in the city, in the face of mounting overdose deaths in Kamloops and across the province.

Dr. Silvina Mema, a medical health officer with the health authority, told council the centres could save lives and would help safely get drug use off of city streets and out of public places.

“Someone who injects in a supervised setting, they have access to talk to a nurse who can provide them with health information and refer them to the services they need — mainly mental-health and substance-abuse services, which could help get them out of their addiction,” she said.

Mema said Interior Health wants to pin down a site for the service first and will then begin consultation with business associations, police and the general public before making an application to Health Canada, which is required to legally operate the site.

Interior Health also plans to launch a

public survey and feedback form online.

Conversations with Ottawa have so far indicated the government is ready to help set up a number of supervised consumption sites around the province, where users could ingest or inject drugs they have previously acquired, Mema said.

Several councillors said they believe two sites would be necessary for the city to ensure support for drug users on both sides of the river.

“That’s critical to do it right here,” said Coun. Tina Lange, adding B.C. should be praised for its “world-leading” approach to the increase in overdose deaths.

While deaths are on the rise across the region, Kamloops saw the highest number in the first half of 2016, with 22 overdose deaths compared to 7 during the same time period in 2015.

By comparison, Kelowna’s statistics stayed relatively flat, according to Interior Health numbers, with 20 deaths in the first six months of 2015 and 19 in 2016.

Coun. Ken Christian, a former director of health protection for Interior Health, said he supports further investigation of a supervised consumption site, but is concerned there aren’t resources required to staff it round-the-clock.

“Are you talking about taking nurses away from kidney dialysis or, heaven forbid, emergency rooms and increasing wait times to service a relatively

small population?” he asked.

Mema said safe-injection sites can also use paramedics or other medical personnel.

Christian believes Interior Health might be as well served by expanding its Car 40 mental-health partnership with Kamloops RCMP, providing overdose kits to Kamloops Fire Rescue and expanding street nurses.

“I would hate to see us get too focused on one kind of event or facility,” he said.

Sherry Robinson and Sandra Tully, both of whom lost sons to overdoses, said they are worried those kind of comments could end up pitting drug users against other residents.

“Those are all people, we’re all people, we all deserve treatment,” Tully said.

“Please don’t say this person deserves treatment more than this person.”

Robinson agreed a safe-consumption centre would be only one step in dealing with drug use in Kamloops.

“I see that it’s the point where we reach the person, beyond the addiction, beyond the stigma, and they make that human connection,” she said.

“So then they can come back six hours later when they’re in pain and they want to use again and say, ‘Hey, I don’t want to do this any more. This sucks. I want to get into treatment.”

When School District 73 officials and Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone sit down to talk later this month, there will be one big agenda item — several schools are overflowing with students.

The problem isn’t limited to the secondary level, said superintendent Alison Sidow. Several elementary schools are over capacity and she plans to press that point at the Sept. 21 meeting with Stone.

With firm numbers not coming until the end of the month, Valleyview secondary is the biggest concern as its student body is at 137 per cent of capacity, with six portables on site. Sidow said ongoing housing development in the area is fuelling the growth there.

It’s anticipated Valleyview will hit 170 per cent of capacity in the next four years, she said.

At the elementary level, Dufferin is

the biggest concern as it is now at 145 per cent of capacity. The school board changed the catchment area for it, sending some students to McGowan elementary, but that has led to an over-capacity at McGowan, at 112 per cent.

There is concern Juniper Ridge will also start to head into an over-capacity situation, Sidow said.

On the North Shore, Westmount elementary is at 126 per cent of capacity, with four portables, and it is expected to increase to 138 per cent of capacity if nothing is done.

Sidow said Westmount needs an addition or another school needs to be built to deal with the body of students, growth also fuelled by construction in the Westsyde/Batchelor area.

Other schools are over-capacity; Sahali, with two portables, is at 102 per cent and South Kamloops secondary, with four portables, is at 107 per cent.

The new kindergarten to Grade 12 Kamloops School of the Arts, a school of

choice, has a wait list.

While Sidow anticipates South Kamloops to drop to somewhere between 94 and 100 per cent in the next five years, the age of the school remains a concern.

The district has asked the provincial government to replace the 1950s-era school, but has heard nothing back. The board envisions building a school that could accommodate 1,250 students.

Sidow said the district has made its case with both Stone and KamloopsNorth Thompson MLA Terry Lake.

“I know they’re doing their darnedest to help us,” she said. “We need more elementary schools, as well.”

The district owns empty lots throughout the city, including in Dallas, Barnhartvale, Batchelor Heights, Brocklehurst and Pineview Valley.

“All the [provincial government] capital funding is going to seismic on the mainland,” Sidow said.

“We need to raise awareness with the provincial government.”

Nearly two weeks into the new school year and there are 230 more students than expected.

In a report to trustees at Monday night’s board of education meeting, School District 73 superintendent Alison Sidow said the growth is spread over all grades.

The district had predicted 950 full- time kindergarten students; on Sept. 9, there were 1,065. On the same day, there were 7,378 elementary students, 88 more than expected, and 5,329 secondary students, an increase of 27.

Sidow told trustees the unexpected increase means staffing

adjustments are required.

The board of education approved adding seven teachers to meet the increased number of elementary students.

One teacher is needed for each of the following schools: Parkcrest, Haldane, Beattie, Arthur Stevenson, Logan Lake, Savona and Marion Schilling elementary schools.

Trustees expressed particular delight three rural schools are seeing increased enrolment.

Assistant superintendent Rob Schoen told the board many of the unexpected students come from families that have moved into

Kamloops, rather than from late repeat registrants. He said indications are families have moved to the River City from Alberta and northern and coastal B.C. Assistant superintendent Bill Hamblett said the board will continue to monitor enrolment through September before filing a firm count with the ministry at the end of the month.

Board chair Denise Harper described the news as a “trajectory that is in a positive direction,” as the board anticipates moving forward from past years of declining enrolment.

A CROWDED RACE WITH TRUE GRIT

T

he fight for the Kamloops-North Thompson B.C. Liberal nomination is getting more interesting by the day.

When incumbent MLA and Health Minister Terry Lake announced on Sept. 1 he would not be seeking a third term in Victoria, the news was not surprising as such a pronouncement had been expected for months.

The decision the very next day by North Shore Business Improvement Association executive director Steven Puhallo to seek the nomination was also not surprising, as that possibility had been reported on this past spring.

When Mayor Peter Milobar followed suit a few days later, it made sense, considering the man he is trying to succeed travelled the same path: city councillor to mayor to MLA candidate to elected MLA. Political pundits were settling back to watch a tough battle for the nomination pitting a man with deep roots in the North Thompson against a man with deep political connections through the region.

Yesterday brought news of a probable third challenger for the nomination as Tobiano founder Michael Grenier has scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. today at Kamloops Airport.

While he was tight-lipped when contacted by KTW, Grenier did say it is “not an unfair expectation” that he will announce he is seeking the nomination and did confirm it will be a political announcement.

Unlike a general election, there will be no splitting of the votes in this nomination contest. The winner will be the person who can sign up the most people to B.C. Liberal memberships and, more crucially, convince all those new members (and existing cardholders) to show up and vote on nomination day.

Federal Liberal candidate Steve Powrie did that successfully during last year’s battle for the Grit nomination in Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo.

Expect some solicitations soon.

Muzak to our ears . . .

W

e had to call a banking institution’s fraud line recently.

Someone had apparently made a purchase using a credit card that has not seen a swipe or tap — or even come out of the wallet — in years.

OK, my hubby and I were a bit skeptical when we listened to the message on the answering machine. Scam, we both immediately thought, even though the caller ended the message with the advisement that the call was not “a sales pitch.”

We debated for a bit, but hubby finally decided it was advisable to find out if the call was legitimate — and we entered into the world of call-centre hell.

Perhaps doing this at the same time we were waiting for pizza to be delivered was not wise. We were both hungry, I had just arrived home from work and one of the boys had been sick all day.

The environment was not conducive to a lot of patience.

He dialled the toll-free number and immediately went into the waiting queue. Every half-minute or so, the monotone male voice would come on advising that the centre was experiencing a larger than normal number of calls, but cautioning not to hang up or you’ll have to start again.

There was also the inane muzak in the background — not any full song, but the same few bars of blah blah blah set to some musical notes repeating.

And repeating.

And repeating.

Hubby wondered aloud if anyone realized how frustrating it is to sit on a phone listening to the same

LEVEL boring, annoying music over and over again, only to be interrupted by the dude with the “stay calm and hang on” message.

With the pizza nowhere in sight and, yes, egged on by the curious reporter wife, we set about to see how long this would last.

Fifteen minutes passed and he wanted to hang up. I won that part of the debate. Twenty minutes passed and we both wondered what was so horrifically wrong with this banking institution that it had obviously been overrun by what we could only assume were dozens and dozens of people who had been alerted to a potential fraud situation.

A half-hour went by and hubby, concerned the pizza had not yet arrived, handed the phone to me and set off to check on the pie’s status. I promised to summon him the minute I heard a real human being on the phone.

Foolish optimism there.

More of the mind-numbing repetitive bars of music and Jack — I had decided to give him a name to make the call at least feel slightly more human — popped back into my ear to assure me they were reallyreallyreally busy and would get

to our call as soon as they possibly could.

Forty-five minutes ticked off and still no response, which made me think: “There’s got to be a story in this somewhere. Either a whole lot of fraud going on with this bank or they’ve got the newbie teller handling all these calls to break them into the joy of the financial world.”

In the meantime, hubby had realized he forgot to hit the send button on our online pizza order and had taken to rummaging in the fridge for something he could heat up quickly. I persevered, determined to have a frank conversation once the human answered.

Finally, the sound of a phone ringing, signalling the wait was worth it.

“Your call cannot be completed as dialled. Please check the number and call again.”

Honestly, those are the only words I heard after the sound of a line ringing through. Someone explain to me how that could happen.

We gave up, determined to deal with it the next morning — and this time, hubby was truly smart.

He called the main toll-free line for this institution, told Chad why he was calling, learned from Chad — yes, a real person and not Jack — that he had to be transferred to another department and, presto, he was talking to the fraud squad.

Turns out the call was legit, the rarely used card cancelled — and neither one of us mentioned customer service could have been a whole lot better.

Of course we all know it is those damn, terminal cancer patients who are responsible for all the fentanyl deaths.

They crawl out of their death beds to sell it on the streets to innocent young people or, worse yet, they become addicts themselves.

It is better to let them suffer.

The College has succeeded in forcing those in severe, unbearable pain to medicate themselves or consider seeking drugs on the street, putting more money in drug dealers’ pockets.

The number of deaths among young people has steadily increased since this plan was implemented.

CAN WE AT LEAST GET A BENCH? Editor: It is a fact there is a shortage of doctors in Kamloops.

Ill people, people with mobility issues, line up every day, standing for hours outside medical clinics, for a chance to get a number so they can get a chance to see a doctor that day.

There is room for a skinny bench and there is a need for a seat for people to wait. This is hard to watch day after day, people standing in all types of weather from 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., when the clinic opens.

Knowing this happens daily, I find it hard to believe the city can’t provide a simple bench and shelter overhead for those who are distressed enough already.

Editor: The Sept. 13 letter from Scott Tupper, president of the Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo Conservative Electoral District Association (‘Government, democracy stable for 150 years’) advocated that electoral system change is not needed and reiterated his party’s official position that any such decision needs to go to a vote.

The history of referendums on electoral reform in Canada is that they have been short on in-depth discussion of issues and have ended as adversarial fights leading to defeat of poorly understood motions.

New Zealand’s contrasting experience of transitioning beyond the Westminster system used a two-question referendum preceded by a lengthy period of public education and consultation by that country’s electoral commission.

Nowhere has the Conservative party

suggested Elections Canada have a similar non-partisan educational role, nor has the party proposed what might be possible referendum questions.

It seems the strategy is to kill the idea of reform for another decade or so, without any quality discussion on whether there are merits to it.

While the Conservative position is that the current system is fine, many Liberals have mentioned the alternative vote. Both are strategic positions based on what would most likely respectively benefit each party.

We need to take the current electoral system review beyond such partisan strategies and focus on why there is discontentment with the current system and how we might address that.

RCMP officers will now patrol with naloxone kits Canada’s national police force is rolling out naloxone kits for officers across the country — and a Kamloops-based constable is part of a video to help educate Mounties about the potential dangers of fentanyl.

Naloxone is a medication used to block the effects of opioids and reverse overdoses.

In an RCMP video posted to YouTube this week, Const. Rob Dupuis describes an encounter he had with the deadly opioid during a traffic stop in the Tournament Capital.

Dupuis said he found a man slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle.

The man was arrested and Dupuis began to search the car.

He said he smelled chemicals and began to feel light-headed and dizzy, so he

“The traffic stop is one of the most dangerous things we will do in our career because of the unknown,” Dupuis says in the video.

“And now, adding fentanyl to the mixture, you are stopping a vehicle and you think it’s drugs and you’re looking at it and you think it’s cocaine or heroin — you just don’t know anymore.”

B.C. provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall has praised the RCMP’s decision to provide officers with

naloxone kits.

“Adding naloxone to the list of tools at their disposal means they are able to keep themselves and those they serve and protect safe,” he said in a statement.

“At the end of the day, that is what it is all about — keeping British Columbians safe. The RCMP police the vast majority of British Columbia and this positive step will impact many communities in the province.

“RCMP encountering a member of the public who has been contaminated either accidentally or in the course of using a drug contaminated with fentanyl will administer naloxone with the goal of saving a life.”

While the focus remains on education, Thompson Rivers University also has naloxone kits on campus.

Dean of students Chris Adam said security officers have the kits, as does TRU’s medical clinic.

“The most important thing is education on harm reduction,” Adam said, something the university does in partnership with other community organizations, including Royal Inland Hospital and ASK Wellness Centre.

The message the university promotes is “safe partying, understanding substance abuse and sexual health,” Adam said.

While the university has had no reported overdoses on campus in the past few years, Adam said the decision to add

naloxone kits to the tools available made sense because the wellness centre and safety and emergency staff want to “enhance our ability to respond to possible fentanyl-related overdoses.”

A $25,000 cost to continue lawsuit CAM FORTEMS

A junior mining company that alleges KGHM Ajax drilled its claim without permission — rendering it worthless — must pay a $25,000 deposit to continue its

lawsuit, a B.C. Supreme Court judge has ruled.

Cicada Ventures filed a statement of claim in May alleging unauthorized access by KGHM Ajax to claims it holds in the area of the historic Ajax pit. It also alleges the company breached

an agreement to pay it $1.3 million for mineral rights to what are known as the Iron Mask claims.

As part of planning to locate infrastructure for its proposed expansion of the historic Ajax mine south of Aberdeen, KGHM

drilled the claims in 2014 and found no mineral resources.

Such drilling is known as “condemnation drilling” and is done to ensure economic minerals aren’t trapped beneath mills or waste dumps,

for example.

KGHM filed an application this summer claiming that Cicada had no way to pay court costs in the event it lost the lawsuit. It asked the B.C. Supreme Court to require Cicada to post

$62,000 as security or abandon the lawsuit.

Master Robert McDiarmid ruled Cicada must post a lesser amount, $25,000, to continue the lawsuit.

While Cicada has no assets and considerable debt, McDiarmid said

Jeff Frame, the lawyer acting for Cicada, made an analogy to a scratch and win lottery ticket, claiming by drilling and finding no mineralization, KGHM Ajax scratched the window on the ticket.

“Once it is scratched and there is a determination that it is not a ‘winner’, it has no value,” McDiarmid wrote.

KGHM Ajax claims it did not make a deal with Cicada, adding the condemnation drilling was permitted by the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

A trial date has not been set.

Kamloops Mounties are hoping a tip from the public will help them track down a crook who burgled a downtown property earlier this month.

At about 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 5 (Labour Day), RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said, a man entered the backyard of a downtown home and stole numerous items before fleeing on foot.

Surveillance footage from the property shows the man (in photo above) to be about 5-foot-11 with a thin build, between 35 and 40 years old.

Thompson Rivers University has partnered with Calgary’s Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and Golden’s Kingsclere Ranch on a $1.1-million research project involving the use of drones in the ranching industry.

TRU’s John Church, the B.C. Innovation Chair in Cattle Industry Sustainability, is the lead researcher in the project. He has used drones in wildlife conservation and management, referring to them as “flying border collies.”

The three-year grant from the national Sciences and Engineering Research Council’s College-University Idea to Innovation program includes the actual grant of $663,940, along with other cash and in-kind contribution from partners that brings the package to almost $1.1 million.

Church and TRU associate professor of geography David Hill will work with Glen Kathler, a research chair in the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) research lab at SAIT, and Kingsclere Ranch, where the RFID tags are being used on cattle to monitor when the animals go to various parts of the pasture.

Hill said when he first began researching applications of drones, “some people though we were nuts and told us to grow up and stop playing with toys . . . but it’s things like this that keep the imagination alive.”

Jeff Braisher of Kingsclere Ranch said the technology attracted him to the project.

“B.C. ranchers collectively manage vast tracts of both private and public land, so having access to tools that enhance our ability to manage this land is what really attracted me to the project,” he said.

On Tuesday at TRU, Church showed the group — which included a classroom’s worth of students — video he took at his

family’s ranch using a drone to watch someone on a quad vehicle trying to get a herd of bison to move where he wanted them to go.

Suffice to say, the scientist noted, it didn’t work well. Church said he has used a drone to move a herd of cattle 10 kilometres.

“With the drones, together with the RFID tags, we can develop a tool for producers that allows us to take the initial investment and technology and find a good use for it,” he said.

“Much of the herd is homogenous — they’re all black cows — but with this tool, each animal becomes truly unique.”

Church also acknowledged the work of cowboys, drones and cow pastures can seem odd to the uninitiated.

When he Googled “weird uses of drones,” Church found a taxidermied cat on a drone, a flame-throwing, turkey-cooking drone — and himself, with his ranching research.

A trial continued yesterday in B.C. Supreme Court for a Kamloops man accused of raping his friend while she slept more than two years ago.

John Grant’s trial on one count of sexual assault began on Monday morning.

Crown prosecutor Don Mann said the incident took place after a chance encounter between Grant and the alleged victim at a mutual friend’s house on Feb. 23, 2014.

“They were good friends,” Mann said.

“They never had a romantic relationship.”

Court heard the woman eventually left the party and went home.

Mann said Grant

later texted her, asking for a place to stay, making references to concerns about his safety.

Mann said she offered Grant a spot in her king-siz’e bed and later woke up to him touching her, court heard.

According to Mann, Grant then followed the woman to a living room sofa and touched her again.

Later, court heard, the woman went to sleep in her bed, leaving Grant on the couch, but awoke to Grant having sex with her.

“The evidence will show [the woman] did not consent to the sexual activity,” Mann said.

The trial, in front of B.C. Supreme Court Justice Linda Loo, was scheduled to last three days and continued yesterday.

New trial after JP Hughes erred A B.C. Supreme Court judge has ordered a new trial for a woman charged with traffic offences after a Kamloops justice of the peace refused to allow a witness to testify at trial.

Dianne Greenwood was convicted of speeding and failing to stop after a hearing in May in front of Kamloops judicial justice of the peace Joan Hughes.

At the hearing, Hughes denied Greenwood’s right to call a witness — namely her eight-year-old daughter, a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the alleged infractions.

Greenwood appealed her convictions and the Crown conceded.

During a brief hearing on Monday, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Dev Dley ruled Hughes’ decision to bar Greenwood’s daughter from testifying was a violation of the Canada Evidence Act. Dley quashed both convictions, ordered a new trial for Greenwood and said it must be heard by a different judicial justice of the peace.

A date for that trial has not been set.

Savings for city in natural gas REMAINDER OF TRANSIT FLEET TO BE CONVERTED IN 2017 ANDREA KLASSEN STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

The City of Kamloops stands to save about $290,000 when it converts the remainder of its bus fleet to compressed natural gas in 2017, city council heard Tuesday.

Director of development and engineering services Marvin Kwiatkowski said the 25 CNG buses already in use in the city are less expensive than expected, even as the price of diesel slumped well below original estimates.

Kwiatkowski said maintenance costs for the buses had been pegged at just under 80 cents per kilometre, due to initial concerns about how they would hold up in the Kamloops climate, but are averaging at about 30 cents.

While the city expected to see savings from the buses four years after purchase, Kwiatkowski said the city saw savings of about $19,000 in their first full year of operation.

BC Transit offered the city another 19 buses earlier this year, which are expected to arrive in early 2017.

According to a government release, the vehicles will be equipped with security cameras. GPS technology to allow riders to track bus times is planned for the future.

Kwiatkowski said an announcement by Fortis BC that it will hike rates by 80 per cent for residential ratepayers will not affect the cost of the city’s fleet.

Lower costs for storm work Another drainage project related to 2014’s super storm will cost the city about half what it originally expected to pay.

At its Tuesday meeting, city council awarded a $942,000 tender for the project to Dawson Construction.

The full cost of the project, which includes installing storm-drainage pipes between Hillside Drive and Summit Drive and a wetland detention pond at the hairpin turn on the Summit Connector, is about $1.3 million.

That’s far less than the city’s initial estimate of nearly $2.7 million for the work.

Public works director Jen Fretz said the city decided to redesign the project after last year’s budget discussions.

The new version will flow over a smaller portion of the hill than the city’s previous drainage network, which Fretz said cut costs and also puts the system at a lower risk of new damage.

Work on the upgrades will begin this fall, with completion next spring.

During the fall sitting of Parliament, the NDP plans to challenge the Liberal government on climate change, health-care funding and indigenous affairs.

It intends to push for the repeal of Bill C-51, controversial anti-terrorism legislation passed by the previous government.

The Liberals have promised to amend the law, but New Democrats accuse the Trudeau government of moving too slowly on planned reforms.

Several internal issues are plaguing the NDP, including sliding poll numbers, shrinking fundraising figures and low morale after the devastating election results last October.

So far, there are no candidates seeking to replace Mulcair.

NEW YORK — Twenty former United Nations special human rights investigators added their voices yesterday to growing calls for Iran to release a jailed Canadian-Iranian academic.

They raised Homa Hoodfar’s case as the UN continued its general assembly in New York.

The 65-year-old, who taught at Montreal’s Concordia University, has been held at Tehran’s notorious Evin prison since June 6.

The former rapporteurs said Hoodfar’s academic work poses no threat to Iranian security and she should be released immediately.

“We stress that Iran is breaching its national constitutional principles by arbitrarily arresting and detaining people for simply expressing their opinion and conducting academic research, as is their professional right and duty,’’ they said in a statement.

Hoodfar’s family has said the Iranian probe into the retired anthropology professor centred on her “dabbling in feminism’’ and security matters.

The former UN investigators described Hoodfar as someone who has dedicated her career to improving the status of women in the Muslim world. They added Iran is violating its own laws by detaining her.

“It is unclear how ‘feminism’ is a threat to Iranian national security, given that Iran has committed itself to the Sustainable Development Goal #5, which is gender equality,’’ they wrote.

On Tuesday, Hoodfar’s relatives said the judge in the case had refused to accept her lawyer and had instead appointed one to his own liking.

Hoodfar suffers from a serious neurological condition and the family has also said requests for a check-up by an independent specialist doctor have been ignored.

Nearly 5,000 academics worldwide have signed a petition this summer in support of Hoodfar, with some rallying outside the Iranian Embassy in Dublin last week.

She has Irish citizenship through marriage.

Nine soldiers hurt in training THE CANADIAN PRESS

FREDERICTON — Nine Canadian soldiers have been injured in a training accident at 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in New Brunswick.

Five soldiers with minor injuries were being treated on the base yesterday, while four others were taken to hospital in Fredericton with serious injuries.

Base Public Affairs Officer Capt. Evelyn Lemire said all the soldiers are members of The Second Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment.

She said they were doing routine training when the light armoured vehicle they were travelling in hit an embankment around 10:30 a.m. yesterday in the training area of the sprawling base.

Lemire said she could not release any medical or personal information about the injured soldiers.

Coffee, wine, cruises: Newspapers look beyond journalism to boost revenue THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO — Newspapers crippled by declining advertising are increasingly turning to less traditional sources of revenue, such as hosting coffee and wine clubs, in an effort to boost profits.

The latest twist was unveiled this week, when the Toronto Star announced the launch of Headline Coffee, which delivers a new bag of ethically sourced coffee beans from different countries.

The coffee delivery service costs $20 a month and is not limited to Star subscribers.

“The newspaper business is going through a pretty turbulent time and people are throwing a lot of jelly at the wall, trying to see what sticks,’’ said Paul Knox, a professor emeritus at Ryerson University’s school of journalism in Toronto.

The Canadian newspaper industry has had one of its most bruising years in recent memory.

Last week, the Globe and Mail asked for about 40 of its employ-

ees to volunteer for buyouts.

About a month prior to that, Torstar announced it was laying off more than 50 people, most of whom are from the Toronto Star newsroom.

In January, Postmedia cut 90 jobs and merged newsrooms in four cities.

Julie Murtha, the Toronto Star’s director of audience development and innovation, said it’s premature to say how much Headline Coffee will contribute to TorStar’s profits, but it is expected to do so.

“We thought it’s an interesting way to extend the products and services that we can offer to consumers,’’ said Murtha.

Several publications operate similar subscription services.

The New York Times and Wall Street Journal both host wine clubs that ship curated bottles of vino to customers as frequently as once a month.

The Times also partnered with Chef’d this summer to sell meal kits filled with ingredients to make recipes

from its cooking section.

Customers can, for example, pay US$59 for a kit to make four servings of beef bourguignon by lead Times Magazine food writer Mark Bittman.

Other Canadian publications are testing different ways to find extra revenue.

The Globe and Mail plans to continue hosting Globe-branded events at its new office space in Toronto, as well as rent out a floor for conferences and other meetings, said publisher Phillip Crawley in an email.

Nearly 10 years ago, the national newspaper hosted a two-week Mediterranean cruise that featured events, like food and wine demonstrations, with some of its staff.

“We’re in an environment where the old system doesn’t work anymore and nobody quite knows what the new ways of raising revenue for journalism are going to be,’’ said Christopher Waddell, an associate professor at Carleton University’s school of journalism

and communication in Ottawa.

He is adamant the future doesn’t lie in advertising or subscriber revenue, as some people seem resistant to paying for news.

Online paywalls have only worked favourably for a number of organizations.

“The question becomes, ‘Can you find other ways of making money or bringing in revenue that allows you to support the news gathering and what you want to do?’’’ he said.

Aside from extra income, the other benefit from such ventures may be the ability to draw in new readership by exposing the news brand to new demographics, both Knox and Waddell said.

Alice Ting, vicepresident of brand development at the New York Times, said in a statement the company sees the potential for its wine club and meal kits to reach new audiences.

Knox and Waddell said they believe these types of alternative revenue sources will continue cropping up.

The Star is already thinking about expanding beyond coffee, said Murtha, though it’s first looking to gain a foothold in the market with the product.

But Waddell warns that what works for one organization may not be successful for another.

“People are going to try lots of different things,’’ he said. “Some of which will work and some of which won’t.”

NATIONAL NEWS Empty homes tax to be self declared, up to two per cent of value Vancouver is proposing homeowners be taxed as much as two per cent of assessed value for vacant units. Mayor Gregor Robertson announced details of the tax ahead of its introduction to city council next week, with the aim to have it in place in 2017.

He says a conservative estimate of what the tax could generate is $2 million. The purpose of the tax is to encourage owners to rent out empty homes in an effort to improve Vancouver’s vacancy rate, which has hovered near zero for years.

A study found as many as 10,800 homes were sitting empty in Vancouver, most of them condominiums.

TORONTO — A report by Sotheby’s International Realty Canada says sales of luxury homes in Vancouver cooled in July and August; however the high-end market picked up in the Toronto area.

The real estate firm says the new foreign buyer tax introduced in Vancouver in August has injected uncertainty into that city’s market, which is expected to moder-

ate headed into the fall.

Sotheby’s says escalating interest from foreign buyers as well as strong local market fundamentals are expected to boost the Toronto area market.

Sales of single-family homes over $1 million in Vancouver in July fell 30 per cent compared with a year ago to 193.

In August, sales were down 65 per cent compared with a year ago, falling to 95.

Vancouver condominium sales over $1 million in July totalled 93 — up 29 per cent from a year ago — but sales in August fell 49 per cent compared with the same month last year, dropping to 40.

Examining Korean rhetoric versus reality

J

apanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said North Korea is the “neighbourhood outlaw” after Pyongyang’s fifth nuclear weapons test last Friday.

U.S. President Barack Obama said “the United States does not, and never will, accept North Korea as a nuclear state.”

Even China voiced its “firm opposition to the test,” while South Korea’s president Park Gyeung-hye accused North Korea’s Dear Leader Kim Jong-un of “maniacal recklessness”.

So far, so restrained — in stark contrast to the berserk threats and fulminations that are the usual fare in North Korea. (Promising to obliterate Seoul, the South Korean capital, in a “sea of fire” is a familiar favourite.)

Then a military spokesman of the South Korean government promised Pyongyang “will be completely destroyed by ballistic missiles and highexplosive shells” if North Korea even thinks of launching a nuclear attack on the South.

The city will be “reduced to ashes and removed from the map,” said the official — and districts of Pyongyang thought to be hiding the North’s leadership will be particularly targeted in the attack.

So much for restraint.

WATCH Sixty-six years of intense hostility have bred an extreme brand of rhetoric on both sides of the border that sounds quite demented to the ears of outsiders.

Germany was divided for 44 years and hundreds were killed on the heavily fortified border between them, but you never heard this kind of invective coming out of the mouths of East or West German officials.

Maybe it’s just a stylistic thing, but it does suggest the possibility of a real war between the two Koreas is higher than it ever was between the two Germanies.

But why does North Korea need nuclear weapons to carry out its threats? It’s perfectly capable of destroying Seoul with “ballistic missiles and highexplosive shells,” too.

The centre of Seoul, a city of 11-million people, is only 50 kilometres from the North Korean border.

Ordinary artillery could take out the

northern half of the city, while short-range missiles could deal with the southern half. (North Korea has 21,000 artillery pieces and thousands of Scud missiles.)

Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons must be for something else.

North Korea’s strategic problem is that it has no allies, while South Korea is allied to the world’s leading nuclear power, the United States, which has never promised not to use its nuclear weapons first.

Pyongyang needs some means of deterring the use of American nuclear weapons in the Korean Peninsula if there is a war.

This does not justify what North Korea is doing — United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon denounced the latest nuclear test as a “brazen breach” of UN resolutions — but it does explain it.

So Jong-un, like his father and his grandfather before him, wants the ability to make nuclear attacks on America’s main Asian ally, Japan, for a start, and later the U.S. itself.

Regrettably, that’s how deterrence works.

The North Korean regime is almost uniquely awful, but the strategic logic would be exactly the same if it were run by much nicer people.

Although the regime is completely paranoid, it is not crazy.

It has not started a war in the past six decades and there is no reason to think it is planning one now.

North Korea’s paranoia is also misplaced because nobody in the South dreams of reunifying the peninsula by war, either. In fact, most people in South Korea would not welcome reunification now even if it happened nonviolently.

I happened to be in Seoul, interviewing somebody in the intelligence service headquarters on the day in 1996 when the death of North Korea’s founder, Kim Il-sung, was announced.

The scene that followed reminded me of the old naval adage: “When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout.”

But the dominant emotion was certainly not joy.

It was fear that the North Korean regime would collapse and that newly prosperous South Korea, having dragged itself out of poverty by two generations of sacrifice, would inherit 25-million impoverished North Koreans with few skills relevant to a modern economy, and have to start all over again.

Twenty years on, it’s almost certain a majority of South Koreans still feel like that about it.

So, there really is little risk of war — which is just as well because there is also

little chance of diverting Pyongyang from its course.

Another round of sanctions will not do the trick — on Sunday, Pyongyang said the threat of “meaningless sanctions” was “highly laughable” — because

the country is almost completely cut off from the global economy already.

Putting a Thaad anti-ballistic-missile unit in South Korea, as Washington has promised to do, will make the South Koreans and

the Japanese feel a bit safer, but everybody is just going to have to live with the problem.

They probably won’t die from it.

stablished in 1996, Tunkwa Provincial Park protects the grasslands, wetlands and forest ecosystems of the Southern Thompson Plateau.

The park also provides a home to a diverse selection of wildlife including marmots, waterfowl, snakes, squirrels, bald

eagles, mule deer, moose and a variety of birds.

Both Leighton and Tunkwa lakes are also stocked annually with rainbow trout.

More than a million eggs are collected every May. A small building is located at the end of Tunkwa Lake, making this a major provincial egg-collection site.

The area is also an important ranching area.

In the 1860s, cowboys discovered these

grasslands and drove their cattle north to feed the gold miners in the Cariboo.

From late May until mid-October, you can still see cattle grazing in the grasslands and forests of the surrounding areas.

It was ranching that created Tunkwa and Leighton lakes.

In the early 1900s, a dam was built on Tunkwa Lake. The dam turned the two shallow ponds into lakes.

oveted depth on the blue line brings with it tough decisions, calls the Kamloops Blazers’ brass will make over the next few weeks.

Ten capable rearguards remain on the roster. There isn’t room for all of them.

“In recent years, there’s been a decline in the quality of defencemen we’ve had, so seeing the competition this year is great,” said 17-year-old Blazers’ D-man Conner McDonald, a Delta product. “It brings out the best in everybody.

“For me, it’s about staying mentally stable and emotionally stable and doing what I can do, and having trust in the coaching staff.”

The top four seems set, with left-shot defencemen Dawson Davidson and Ondrej Vala, both 18, joining a pair of proven right shots in 20-year-old Dallas Valentine and 19-year-old Joe Gatenby.

Kamloops drafted Nolan Kneen and McDonald third and 24th overall, respectively, in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft.

Both 17-year-old right-handed defencemen are expected to crack the roster and compete for ice time this season.

Rounding out the group of 17-year-olds on the back end is Tylor Ludwar, a right-hand shot who has done nothing but improve his stock since training camp began.

Kamloops Blazers’ general manager Stu MacGregor will be working closely with head coach Don Hay on making roster decisions in the next few weeks.

“Ludwar has been the surprise of the group,” Blazers’ head coach Don Hay said of the 6-foot, 190pound D-man from Regina. “He played major midget last year as a 16-year-old and has come in here and handled himself very well.”

Cameron Reagan, 19, was no sure thing to crack the team in 2015-2016, but edged Travis Verveda in a position battle and went on to prove himself a serviceable WHL D-man.

When the Blazers shipped 18-year-old forward Jake Kryski to Kelowna last month, Joe Gatenby and younger brother Danny Gatenby, an 18-year-old blue liner, came to Kamloops in return.

When Devan Harrison was reassigned to the Moose Jaw Generals of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League on the weekend, Luke Zazula became the only remaining 16-year-old defenceman on the roster.

If the Blazers deem Zazula ready to play at least 40 games this season, the league minimum for a 16-year-old, he could sneak onto the team.

“We’re all still friends, but,

yeah, we all know we’re competing for a spot,” said Zazula, a Langley product. “It’s just who wants it more. It’s been a dream of mine ever since I was young. It would be an honour and would mean the world to make this team.”

The Blazers finish their preseason slate against the Cougars in Prince George tomorrow. With Davidson, Vala and Valentine away at NHL camps and prospects tournaments, there will be plenty of ice time available to the Blazers on the bubble.

“Everybody will raise their level up once they get back from NHL camps and we’ll be cutting down,” Hay said. “As they see people leave, they’ll notice the urgency to step up their game.

“It’s going to go down to eight, maybe seven.”

Hayden Dick smiled at the idea of being atop the Kamloops Storm’s scoring chart.

“I’m usually not a points guy,” he said, laughing.

Still, two games into the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season, Dick is tied for the team lead in points with five — all assists — along with his linemate Evan Walls and defenceman Garrett Ewert.

Not a bad start for the 17-year-old who, two weeks ago, was being cut by the Kamloops Blazers.

“We have a pretty fast forward group,” he said. “We all work hard. We’re pretty physical.

I think we’re going to come up with some offensive games this year.”

As often as they lit the lamp in their debut at Memorial Arena on the weekend, Storm head coach Ed Patterson said he doesn’t expect his team to continue scoring like it did in its first two contests. More than six goals per game is a hard pace to keep up.

“I think we just got fortunate,” he said. “It’s early on for lots of teams and no one’s

familiar with systems or being accountable this early.

“Throughout a whole season, we’ll be losing every single player by Christmastime if they keep that pace up.”

Though it may slow slightly, Kamloops’ offensive prowess was a welcome start for a club that, at times, struggled to score last season. The Storm had more scorers in the KIJHL’s Top 10 — three — than any other team after the first weekend of play.

Tuesday, the forward group got a little bit stronger, too, with the return of Tre Sales, who had been in Fort McMurray with the junior A Oil Barons to start the season.

The 18-year-old led the Storm in scoring for much of last season.

His addition became all the more important Tuesday, with news surfaced that 20-year-old and co-captain Keaton Gordon could miss an extended portion of the season after suffering an upper-body injury Saturday.

“It’s nice to be home,” Sales said.

“I need to play simple, good hockey and try to put up some points, use my speed to impress people.”

The Storm will be home to

the Osoyoos Coyotes tomorrow, the club’s last game in the Tournament Capital for the month of September.

Will Memorial Arena and the Storm forward corps continue to give opposition goaltenders fits?

“We’re very fast and we can move the puck pretty well, too,” Walls, who finished last weekend with five goals, said.

“We’ve got a lot of firepower on the front-end — the backend, too. We’ll be getting quite a few goals this year, I hope.”

NOTES: The KIJHL has eliminated cross-over play as discussed in the offseason. Clubs in the Okanagan/Shuswap Conference will not play teams in the Kootenay Conference until the playoffs, squaring off in the league championship.

The league has also shortened the regular season to 47 games.

Both the five-game reduction and elimination of interconference play were made in hopes of generating cost savings for teams. . . . There have been no developments on the topic of league expansion. Both Quesnel and Williams Lake have been rumoured as future homes for the KIJHL.

Kamloops’ next multi-sport event may be the 2017 Special Olympics B.C. (SOBC) Summer Games.

KTW learned last week that the Tournament Capital would be entering a bid for the 2017 Games, a report later confirmed by a city source.

On Tuesday, Tournament Capital co-ordinator Sean Smith said the city could be named host of the event as early as Sept. 20.

The Special Olympics aim to enrich the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, optimizing the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle through sport.

Organizers expect 1,280 athletes and 348 coaches would be in attendance at the Summer Games should they come to Kamloops.

Eleven sports — aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, golf, rhythmic gymnastics,

powerlifting, soccer, softball, fivepin bowling and tenpin bowling — are included in the Games.

The 2017 event would begin on Thursday, July 6, with the arrival of teams and the opening ceremony.

Competition would take place on Friday and Saturday, with the closing ceremony wrapping the event on Saturday night.

The SOBC Summer Games is a qualifier for the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, which will next take place in Nova Scotia in 2018.

“Multi-sport events are great for the community, bring a lot of different groups together,” Smith said. “Special Olympics B.C. has been great to work with in the past.

“If we can host those athletes in Kamloops next July, we’d sure like to do that.”

Kamloops played host to the 2015 SOBC Winter Games, which brought more than 700 athletes from across B.C. and the Yukon to compete in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, floor hockey, snowshoeing and speedskating.

TORONTO — Alex Cobb pitched solidly into the seventh inning and Corey Dickerson drove in four runs as the Tampa Bay Rays beat Toronto 8-1 yesterday afternoon to hand the scuffling Blue Jays their fourth straight series loss.

Cobb (1-0), in his third start since returning from Tommy John surgery, allowed one run on just two hits with three walks and four strikeouts through 6 2/3 innings.

He retired 11 straight between a third-inning walk and a seventhinning single.

Dickerson and Kevin Kiermaier each hit two-run homers for the Rays (62-83), who set a new club record with 200 long balls in one season. Dickerson added two more RBIs on a base hit and a force out, Logan Forsythe drove in one and Brad Miller hit a sacrifice fly.

Edwin Encarnacion had a sac fly for the Blue Jays (79-66), while Marco Estrada, despite a dominant first three innings, fell to 8-9 on the season.

Estrada retired the first nine Rays he faced and became the first Blue Jays pitcher in club history to strike out the first five batters of a game.

But he took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts through 5 1/3 innings.

Cathy Turnbull Spence is gauging the city’s appetite for ringette.

“I found out there wasn’t a league here a while ago and it’s always been in the back of my mind,” said Turnbull Spence, who is coaching co-ordinator for the Kamloops River City Racers Speed Skating Club.

“The plan is to run a few sessions this month and next month and, if we get enough interest, we’ll try to run a morestructured program this winter.”

There are two Come Try Ringette sessions planned this month, the first scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sunday at McArthur Island Sport

and Event Centre. The second will be held on Sept. 25.

Register for the free, co-ed sessions by calling the City of Kamloops at 250-8283500 and providing program No. 265532 or sign up online at cometryringette.ca.

“Ringette is not hockey for girls,” Turnbull Spence said.

“It has different rules, different equipment, different skills and is a different game than hockey.

“Maybe there are some male skaters who don’t like the heavy

contact of hockey, but they’re agile and like to move around fast on the ice and work on a team.”

Participants will be provided with sticks and rings, but must provide their own skates, gloves and helmets. Bike, hockey, snowboard and ringette helmets are OK. The Thompson Okanagan Ringette League has four teams — Kelowna, Salmon Arm-based Shuswap, Vernon and Westside, with more than 470 players registered on 40 teams.

“I asked the presidents in Salmon Arm and Vernon and they

were keen on helping me get something going in Kamloops,” Turnbull Spence said.

“It’s a very fast game and one of my underlying interests is crosstraining for speedskating. It would be a good fit between those sports.”

If there is enough

interest in the Come Try Ringette sessions this fall, Turnbull Spence will consider spearheading a more structured six- to eight-week program this winter.

“From there, we could perhaps look at a league or something for the fall of 2017, but it’s baby steps at first

to test the waters,”she said. “I’m thinking it will just be recreational to start.”

Ringette is among the sports that will be played at the 2018 B.C. Winter Games in Kamloops.

“I just thought I’d start inquiring,” Turnbull Spence said.

STRIKER SCHOOL This technical training is designed to build players into a goal scorer regardless of their position.

Participants are expected to be serious and hard working soccer players at an intermediate or advanced level of play. All sessions are led by KYSA Technical Director Ciaran McMahon.

Fit Findlay finds podium Peter Findlay of Kamloops continues to test his mettle and find the podium in longdistance running and mountain biking races.

Findlay, 57, had outstanding performances at the Kootenay Sufferfest, held on Sept.

3 and Sept. 4.

He completed the Milford Mountain 50-kilometre Ultra Trail Marathon on Sept. 3.

It started in the valley between Kaslo and New Denver and took runners on a 2,535-metre ascent and 3,160-m descent before finishing in Kaslo.

Findlay placed second overall with a time of 5:57:00. Vincent Pagot of Whistler won in a time of 5:43:15.

The next day, the ageless wonder won gold in the 40-kilometre mountain biking race, a technical single-track event that started and finished in New Denver.

He clocked in at 2:30:53, Ian Finke of Rossland was second with a time of 2:35:56 and Jamie Skinner of Kamloops won bronze in 2:47:30.

There was also a 7.5-kilometre children’s mountain-biking race in

Kaslo. Aedan Skinner, 11, of Kamloops placed first in 24:02.

On Sept. 10, a few Kamloops participants completed the Mt. Robson 50-kilometre Ultra, running along the Berg Lake Trail in wet, muddy, rainy conditions.

Marcus Allen was sixth overall and sixth in the 19- to 39-yearold division in 4:26:26, Findlay was ninth overall and first in the 40-plus division in 4:38:15 and Misty Palm was 73rd overall and 15th in the female 19- to 39-yearold division in 6:08:47.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Elisabeth Fischer

April 28, 1928 – September 9, 2016 A page has turned and a chapter has ended, but our family story continues. Our mom quietly closed her eyes and fell asleep at home last Friday night, September 9th, 2016 with her husband and children at her side. Another angel is in Heaven.

She was born in Wettringen, Germany on April 28, 1928. Our mom arrived in Canada in 1956, happy to leave a war-torn country for this wonderful new land, after being coaxed to come by her two sisters who were already here.

After meeting our dad Otto, they were married in 1958 - two had found each other. They spent their first six years in Saskatchewan and then decided to go west and make a home in Kamloops, where Dad began a successful plumbing contracting business. Mom was the glue that held things together in our family – really, it was a partnership - dad’s business flourished and mom held the home front together. Instinctively, she became ‘super-mom’, baking, preserving, cooking meals, sewing costumes for those many new (to her) Canadian occasions and always being available to supervise our homework – skills we took for granted but that sadly now often fall by the wayside in today’s families.

Education was very important to our parents and mom modeled that by acquiring her own Canadian High School equivalency. She ensured that we all pursued higher education and got into good professions. Mom was curious, interested

and wondered about things. She was a pacifist and was very adamant about Canada not becoming involved in international conflicts. She was engaged in current affairs until the day she left us. Mom was a news addict, a CBC listener and committed to the principle of a prosperous and free Canada – she was particularly satisfied that the Conservatives had not experienced success during the last federal election.

Our parents felt privileged to be able to acquire recreational property and our family get-away at Shuswap Lake became a paradise for her.

Although Mom wasn’t particularly religious despite being raised Catholic, she believed that God was everywhere in nature and especially at Magna Bay. She was the driving force behind many of the improvements there for which the rest of us are now extremely grateful.

Mom outlived all of her siblings and remained sad about having lost two of them during the Second World War. She provided our family with guidance and sober second thoughts as we started our own life chapters. Her pride and joy were her seven grandsons Kurt, Tristan, Adrian, Evan, Noah, Alex and Jordyn. She never stopped telling us how proud of us all she was and that she knew we felt the same.

Left behind to remember her are our dad and her husband of 58 years Otto, her four children Edna (Manfred), Esther (Norbert), Sue-Ann (Greg) and Paul (Josey).

Please join us in Celebrating our Mom’s Life on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Schoening Funeral Service, 513 Seymour Street, Kamloops at 2:00 pm.

Hannah Joy Perris 1973 - 2016

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce that Hannah Joy Perris of Savona, BC passed away peacefully on September 11, 2016 at 43 years of age.

She is survived by her loving husband Jason and their two children Elijah and Ebany, siblings Dameon Lorensen (Robyn) of Langley, Caleb Lorensen of Everett, WA, Abra Lorensen (predeceased) and Mother and Father Derril and Lynne Lorensen of Kamloops.

Born in Winchester, California, Hannah moved to Pink Mountain, BC at three months old with her parents and two other siblings at the time, and then moved to Savona in 1980. Hannah graduated from Kamloops Secondary School in 1991. Hannah met Jason in 1992 at the age of 19 and they never looked back. With the help of Elvis, they married at the Graceland Chapel in Las Vegas in 1995, enjoying over 21 years of marriage.

Her proudest achievement was raising her two children Elijah (22) and Ebany (19).

She was very active in the sports community, volunteering as needed with her kid’s numerous sports activities. She spent over 12 years on the Kamloops Minor Hockey Board in a variety of roles, including Vice-President.

Hannah faced her life challenges head on; sharing her kind, joyful spirit along the way. Her family is so grateful to have her in their life and anyone that knew her, would understand why. While her presence will be sorely missed, her joy and love she shared will continue through those whose lives she touched.

A Celebration of Hannah’s Life will take place at noon on Tuesday, September 20th, 2016 at St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral, 360 Nicola Street, Kamloops with The Very Reverend Kenneth J. Gray presiding, with a short reception to follow.

Special thanks to her many friends and family for their unwavering support as well her Health Care Team at RIH and the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House.

Harbhajan Kaur Gill passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Friday, September 9, 2016.

Harbhajan was born in Batalla, District Amritsar, India on October 1, 1932.

Harbhajan is predeceased by her parents Wazir Singh and Kartar Kaur Bal, three brothers Bhajan, Ajaib, Talvinder and her son-in-law Jack Adam in 2011.

She is survived by her husband Jaswant Gill, her loving children Paul, Kamla, Aman (Jim Greatbanks), Raj (Bob Neville) and Sonny, her grandchildren Kelsey and Jay (Adam) and her little Jake (Neville).

George Barron April 2nd, 1928 – September 11th, 2016

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of George Barron of Kamloops, BC on September 11th, 2016 at 88 years of age.

George is survived by his loving wife Jean, children Greg (Koraley) Barron, Joan Barron, Carol (John) Vermilyea and Brenda (Chris) Brookbank, all of Kamloops; grandchildren Dan, Nicole, Kyle, Justin, Mark, Matt, Miles and Marley and six and a half very special great-grandkids. He is also survived by his brother Bill and his sisters-in-law Ivy and Peggy. George was predeceased by his father, mother and brother Tim.

We would like to thank the doctors and nurses that cared for dad, your kindness was appreciated.

George lived his early life in Blue River. He worked around BC for CNR and was married to Jean in 1959. They moved to Kamloops in 1967 and George retired 1983. He spent much of his free time fishing, hunting and wood cutting.

His grandsons learned many of his skills during these years. George enjoyed being a grandpa and watching his grandkids grow up into great adults.

At dad’s request, there will be no service.

There will be no formal ceremony and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

We will miss our kind but cranky pops.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Marjorie Willoughby Hospice.

We are extremely devastated and heartbroken with the passing of our dear Ross on Monday, August 8, 2016. You are so missed every day and will remain in our hearts forever.

Ross has left behind a wonderful family, your loving and devoted wife Heather of 30 years; sister Eileen Bennett and her husband Howard of Richmond, BC and their daughter Carla (Sheldon), Paris and Jasmine of Calgary, Alberta; son Adam (Jennifer), grandsons Rylan and Cole of Sylvan Lake, Alberta and son Derek (Terine) of Red Deer, Alberta; sister-In-Law Elaine Forrester of Wetaskiwin, Alberta and her daughter Shelley (Alan) of Gwynne, Alberta and their sons Chad and Jared and son Rod (Chris) of Wetaskiwin, Alberta; brother-In-law Don Mark (Randi) and their son Randon (Jennifer) of Burnaby and many other relatives. Ross was predeceased by his Mother Thelma; Father Doug and Brother Gordon. Rylee our puppy, and your devoted companion, misses you horribly!

Ross was born in Vancouver on September 16, 1950 and started assisting his dad in his teens with HVAC work on the ships. That career would be with him throughout his entire life. He left Vancouver in 1974 and moved to Kamloops as he wanted to live in a smaller community and never looked back. After arriving in Kamloops he worked at Weyerhaeuser, Interior Plumbing & Heating, School District #73, Hotel 540 and J. Walsh & Sons. He retired from School District #73 after 20 years. He explored being a Pilot Truck Driver for a time and enjoyed seeing other parts of the country and creating many friendships on his travels.

Ross was an avid skier, went on various canoe trips with the guys including the Bowron Lakes and the Kettle Valley Railway bike trip, enjoyed golfing and loved to travel in our 5th wheel and see the country. He had started a “trailer fund” in the hopes of purchasing another 5th wheel to carry on with what we loved and explore the country. He loved to socialize with friends, neighbours and acquaintances and share his overstocked garage with anyone that needed anything. Ross loved life and lived life to the fullest until his health became an issue and it overcame him. Ross always had a smile on his face and had a very outgoing personality and never had any difficulty talking to anyone about anything. Family was of utmost importance to Ross. His presence is missed greatly.

Special thanks to Dr. J. O’Connell for his invaluable dedication; Dr. B. Proctor and the staff at the Cancer Clinic and everyone else that provided care to Ross throughout the years. Your dedication has been invaluable.

Donations will be gratefully accepted in Ross’ memory by the Canadian Cancer Society and Heart & Stroke Foundation.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 17th, 2016 at 2:00 pm at the Hotel 540, Rivers Room, 540 Victoria Street, in Kamloops. She is also survived by her uncle Harold Schultz (Donna) of Jasper, AB and brothers Wayne Hoffman (Karen) of Jasper, AB and Gerry Wols of Vernon, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jenny was predeceased by her father Henry and mother Elsie in 2014.

It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce

the passing of our beloved mother Doris Catherine Merkosky. Mom passed away on the morning of Saturday, September 10, 2016 with her children by her side.

Doris was born on September 7, 1936 in Regina, Saskatchewan where she lived her early years before moving to North Battleford to start her career in radio.

Later she moved to Edmonton where she met her future husband Martin. They started their family in Edmonton then moved to Humboldt, Saskatchewan for a few years prior to settling in Kamloops, BC in 1969.

Doris is survived by her four children Glenn (Jennifer) Merkosky, Doug (Melody) Merkosky, Sandra (John) Keyton, Carmen Moore and her eleven grandchildren Brandon, Kyle, Riley and Jack Merkosky; Kirsty, Shane and Brandie Merkosky; Joshua Keyton; Kelsey, Nicholas and Jordan Moore and five great-grandchildren Easton and Dawson Merkosky; Ryan, Reese and Kate Fisher.

Doris also leaves behind one brother and sister Frank (Jean) Roberts and Ann (Albert) Mizzi as well as many extended family and beloved friends.

Doris is pre-deceased by her loving husband Martin, who passed away in April 2013. She is also pre-deceased by her brother Fin and sister Sue. Doris’ proudest accomplishment was her family. She loved family gettogethers for barbeques and bocce tournaments. She enjoyed reading, spending time on her computer, playing cards and bowling. Our mother’s most precious moments were her evenings spent relaxing, telling stories and laughing with her children and friends. She had a great sense of humour and making someone smile or laugh was a goal each and everyday.

Prayers will be recited on Friday, September 16, 2016 at 7:00 pm and the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 11:00 am both at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 635 Tranquille Road, Kamloops, BC. Celebrant, Father Paul Simms.

Rolio Lombardi 1931 – 2016

Rolio Lombardi of Kamloops passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at 84 years of age. He is survived by his cousins Bruno (Elsie) Wojak of Kamloops, Leonard (Marian) Schmeichel of USA, Ruth (Sanford) Johnson of USA, Frank-Rudiger (Ursula) Zimmermann of Germany. He was predeceased by his father and mother Nazario and Elsi Lombardi, as well as many numerous relatives in BC, Alberta, USA and Germany.

Rolio was born in Kamloops on October 19, 1931.

He attended Kamloops High School and after graduation he worked as a clerk for CN until he retired in 1986. Rolio’s interests were singing and playing guitar.
