A health care worker and union leader will run for the NDP in Kamloops-North Thompson in next year’s provincial election. Barb Nederpel announced her candidacy yesterday during an event at McDonald Park. “Terry Lake broke his promise to provide everyone with a physician by 2015,” she told reporters. In 2013, Lake picked up more than 50 per cent of the popular vote in the riding, widely held to be a bellwether electoral area that predicts the wider provincial outcome. KamloopsNorth Thompson has traditionally been a swing riding and a rejigging of boundaries made it more favourable to the NDP. Lake, B.C.’s health minister, is expected to announce next month whether he will run for a third time or return to his position as a veterinary instructor at Thompson Rivers University.

hen Colin McGaffin looks back on the hundreds of kilometres of driving and 14 concerts along the way, it’s an early moment that stands out. The owner of Fresh is Best Salsa was in Victoria on July 22, waiting for Tragically Hip lead singer Gord Downie to come onstage for the first show of a monthlong Canadian tour. Months earlier, Downie had announced he’d been diagnosed with a terminal form of brain cancer. The 14 shows ahead of him could well be the band’s last. “At the very start of the tour, you didn’t know how Gord was going to look and sound and his energy levels,” McGaffin recalled. “It was kind of up in the air, so it was great to see that show and how great he sounded and how focused the whole band was. It was pretty special to see that right out of the gate.” For the next month McGaffin followed the band through four provinces and 10 cities, attending every

ALLEN DOUGLAS/KTW A beautiful, greasy jungle of people gathered to toast dying front man Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip one last time at Riverside Park on Saturday. The Hip’s final concert on its farewell Man Machine Poem tour was staged in the band’s hometown of Kingston, Ont., and CBC aired the captivating, gut-wrenching, breathtaking, emotion-filled swan song. Nearly 12 million viewers tuned in across the country, a few thousand of them watching, cheering, dancing, sweating and crying together in downtown Kamloops.
More Inside Turn to A13 for more on the Hip’s final show concert along the way. It’s a feat he’s not sure anyone else accomplished — while
he met other fans who scored tickets for multiple shows, McGaffin said there didn’t seem to be anyone else with his ambitious plans. So, what do you get out of 14 Tragically Hip shows? More music, for one.
“They’ve been playing so many different sets and so many different songs that you just wouldn’t see if you saw one or two shows. Seeing their whole catalogue of songs this trip has been pretty special,” he said.
While there have been emotional moments, McGaffin said they’re hard to pinpoint — a lyric, or even just a few notes in a familiar song. See NETWORK, A12
