Kamloops bylaw services are waiting to see if the owner of 22 Labrador dogs and puppies will return to claim her animals, which were seized by RCMP on Tuesday night.

Bylaw supervisor John Ramsay said the city has had the dogs in its pound since they were seized from a van parked in front of a local hotel, despite early reports from RCMP that the dogs were being turned over to the B.C. SPCA.

Ramsay said there are also more dogs involved than originally stated by police, 16 puppies and six adult dogs, one of which is pregnant.

“We had the dogs assessed by the SPCA and they’re not under distress at all, which means that when they do the evaluation of the dogs they aren’t emaciated, wounded or injured,” Ramsay told KTW. The SPCA also looked at the dogs’ coats, to check for matting or other issues.

Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer with the B.C. SPCA, said while there is no legal jurisdiction for her organization to seize the dogs since they are not in ill health, it’s important pet owners take care when travelling with their animals.

“Transporting animals in vehicles, even one, during this type of heat, you have to make sure they’re properly confined and two, you’re not leaving them unattended in this heat,” she said.

Heat warning issued to workers WorkSafeBC urges caution given temps WorkSafeBC has issued a heat-stress alert for Kamloops as the temperature continues in the mid30s C. Media relations officer Scott Money said the alert is to remind employers and workers of the increased risk of heat stress and heat stroke when the temperature is high.

Last year, 24 people lost workdays in the province due to heat stress-related injuries, up from the historical average of 19 annually.

“The majority of workers suffering heat stress related symptoms in 2015 were in the construction sector, followed closely by primary resources and manufacturing workers. But we need to remember — all outside workers are potentially at risk,” said Patrick Davie, WorkSafeBC’s regional prevention manager in Kamloops.

The agency advises employers to have a heat stress mitigation plan that includes educating and training to recognize the symptoms of heat stroke and stress and for workers to monitor others during hightemperature workdays for the symptoms.

Canada Post negotiations hit ‘impasse’

Talks between Canada Post and its unionized workforce over the past six weeks have yielded little result, with a halt to service looming next week.

The Crown corporation said yesterday “talks have reached an impasse.”

Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) secured a strike vote from members that is now set to expire. The corporation has indicated it won’t support

an extension of the 60-day expiry date and the union doesn’t want to incur costs to hold a second vote.

That sets up the expiration of the strike vote for Aug. 25.

“After nine months of negotiations, there has been little progress on significant issues,” the corporation said in a statement.

“CUPW’s demands, worth more than a billion dollars, would make Canada Post products and services completely unaffordable.”

Grim forecasts for return of sockeye on the Fraser River have shut down the annual First Nations inland fishery at Kamloops Lake for the first time in a decade.

“We’ve had bad years when we’ve had to be careful,” said Murray Ross, who heads Secwepemc Fisheries Commission.

“This year I don’t think we should be fishing a single one.”

The decision to leave fishing boats on dry land this year comes after the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans has already shut down all sports and commercial fishing on the Lower Fraser River and Thompson areas.

The year marks a low-point in the fouryear cycle of returning sockeye. But test fisheries and forecasts have come in far below expected low numbers.

million sockeye salmon will return to the Fraser River system — potentially making it one of the worst returns in a century.

The agency also noted water temperatures in the Fraser at Hope are expected to reach more than 21 degrees this week.

“Sustained exposure of sockeye to Fraser River water temperatures in this range has been shown to cause severe stress and early mortality,” it noted in the most recent bulletin.

The inland fishery on Kamloops Lake started operation about a decade ago and is now linked to a successful private enterprise, RiverFresh.

Gillnets have been utilized in years of low sockeye returns in the past to allow the Kamloops Lake fishery to target otherwise healthy chinook populations. Those nets have larger mesh, which trap

chinook but allow sockeye to pass.

But Ross said any bycatch of sockeye this year is deemed unacceptable — resulting in no fishery and the jobs and sales that come with it.

“The in-season data is probably the worst I’ve ever seen it.”

Shuswap conservationist Jim Cooperman said the poor brood year combined with a weak return means there will be few or no sockeye returning in the Adams River this fall.

“The run has virtually collapsed,” he said.

RiverFresh has a storefront operation in Kamloops designed to sell product from the fishery. Ross said it will have to look outside to satisfy customer demand.

“We’re looking to see if there’s other B.C. seafood, sustainable and wild seafood. It will be tough to find.”

VANCOUVER — Predictions of an abysmal sockeye return has forced the closure of all salmon fishing on the Lower Fraser River, prompting an outcry from recreational users who say they are leading the way to preserve that fishery.

But Jennifer Nener, the Department of Fisheries and Ocean’s director of salmon for the Pacific region, says circumstances on the Lower Fraser are too severe to allow sport fishing, no matter what kind of salmon they are targeting.

“This is the lowest return we have on record, and so for that reason we really feel a need to be very precautionary,’’ she said.

The department issued notice yesterday one hour after sunset the fishery would close until further notice.

On Tuesday, the Fraser River Panel downgraded its estimate for the summer sockeye run from 992,000 fish to 700,000. The total run is only expected to be about one million, Nener said.

“The numbers of sockeye are just so low that it’s really critical at this time that we get as many as possible to the spawning grounds,’’ she said.

In 2009, the government launched an inquiry when only 1.4 million sockeye returned on a predicted run of 10 million.

The department’s notice says anglers are still permitted to fish for trout, steelhead and sturgeon.

A jury has found a former psychiatric nurse guilty of four charges stemming from theft of a truck and trailer from a city agricultural business.

Jurors deliberated for about two hours yesterday before finding Jonathan Phillips, 40, guilty of break and enter, possession of stolen property, evading police and dangerous driving. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of June 18 after a Mountie on patrol noticed the truck pulling a flat

deck trailer with a tractor.

Members followed the truck and trailer unit in a slowmotion chase from Dufferin and Sahali downtown. Police eventually used a spike belt to stop the truck, which ended its run at the Shark Club restaurant on Lorne Street.

Phillips represented himself at trial.

Phillips told jurors during his testimony that he broke into the office to steal keys and the truck, essentially pleading guilty on two counts. But he denied driving dangerously and evading police.

Caputo noted to jurors that while Phillips did not speed, he was seen driving the wrong way on two downtown streets at the same time bars were closing and patrons were flushing outside.

Phillips indicated during the trial he now intends to raise a defence of entrapment against police.

At a sentence hearing last year after pleading guilty to a crime spree and assaulting sheriffs, Phillips’ defence lawyer said he suffered a brain injury in an altercation with a nightclub bouncer.

The number of illicit drug overdose deaths to Kamloops did not increase in July.

A report from the B.C. Coroners Service notes a slight decrease provincially and the total for Kamloops remains at 22 for this year 12 linked to fentanyl at the end of July.

Provincially, there were 433 illicit drug overdose deaths in the first seven months of the year, a 73.9 per cent increase from the same period last year. The total in July was 52, down from 61 in June.

Coroner Barb McLintock said the number of deaths from overdoses remains significantly higher from previous years and, in particular those linked to fentanyl.

From January to June this year, there were 236 overdose deaths linked to the drug, a 250 per cent increase from the same period last year.

The Northern region has the highest proportion of fentanyl-related overdose deaths at 75 per cent.

Illicit drugs include street dogs like heroin, cocaine and methamphetamines, medications not prescribed for the deceased, a combination of those two categories or when the drug origin is not known.

Those ages 20 to 39 continue to have the highest incidence to date with 23.6 per cent in the 20 to 29 age bracket and 30.7 per cent in the 30 to 39 bracket.

Males account for 80.4 per cent of illicit drug overdose deaths to date.

POT DELAY IS WASTING MONEY Sometime in the next year or two, marijuana will be legal for personal consumption in Canada.

The federal government is currently working on the exact laws, but all indications so far point to it being produced, sold and taxed much like alcohol, i.e. not sold to kids, sold through special outlets, taxed heavily.

But the federal Liberals have, as yet, not touched the drug laws already on the books, which is wasting the time and money of police forces and courts across the country.

Men and woman are still charged with simple possession or for running small grow operations in sheds and garages.

This is surreal for the low-level drug offenders. The law of the land is about to change, but they’re stuck on the wrong side of a legislative process. The same behaviour that is criminal now will be a mere personal choice, or even considered entrepreneurial by 2018.

It also wastes the money and time of the police and courts.

The police have enough to do without worrying about processing pot as evidence or filling out the paperwork for simple possession charges.

Yet they’re sworn to uphold the law.

Although there is some looking the other way — our courts might collapse if police launched a blitz on casual pot users — they can’t look away from a dozen plants.

So, while the Liberals slowly work their way through the ramifications of the new law, we send people to court to pick up criminal records and police spend time investigating and testifying.

What we’re likely to see now is a year or so of foot dragging.

Anyone charged in the next 18 months has no incentive to go before a judge — after all, they won’t be lawbreakers, soon enough.

Rousing in Rio

I

’ll be honest — I’ve never found the Summer Olympic Games all that compelling.

Maybe it’s the fact Canada is often secondfiddle in summer sports — or third, or fourth, or outside the top 10, for that matter — or maybe it’s my all-too-Canadian preference for the likes of hockey, snowboarding or even curling.

But I’m often indifferent toward the Summer Olympics.

I remember relatively little about the 2012 Games in London. Canada’s bronze medal in women’s soccer was the highwater mark and I’m not sure I even watched the match that won them the medal.

Not since 1996 in Atlanta, when Donovan Bailey won gold in the 100-metre dash, setting a new world-record time of 9.84 seconds before anchoring Canada’s 4x100m relay team to another gold, can I remember myself tuning into the Summer Games with any regularity.

But the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro have been different.

Despite my lack of cable, I found myself tuning in to watch Penny Oleksiak’s thrilling goldmedal finish in the women’s 100metre freestyle from a table at the Fox’n Hounds.

I saw Andre De Grasse challenge Usain Bolt in the semifinal of the 200m from a computer screen at my kitchen table.

I even stole glances at the semifinal soccer match between Canada and Germany on a computer at work (shhhh don’t tell Chris Foulds).

now requires me to be a little more in touch with what’s happening in the largest sporting event in the world.

Maybe it’s that, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to truly appreciate how amazingly talented these athletes are.

Heck, I can’t even swim a length at the YMCA-YWCA pool without swallowing a mouthful of water.

But it has also had to do with the personalities in Rio. From Oleksiak’s shock at being the media darling, to De Grasse staring down Bolt as they crossed the finish line of the 200m neck and neck, Canada’s athletes have been a joy to watch in Brazil.

The men’s volleyball team soared to new and unexpected heights, the women’s rugby team medalled in the sport’s first-ever Games, high-jumper Derek Drouin won Canada’s first gold medal in a field sport in more than 80 years.

Canada had 15 medals — three golds, two silvers and 10 bronzes — when KTW went to press yesterday. Another handful

of athletes are favourites to hit the podium before the Games wrap on Sunday — De Grasse ran in the 200m last night, the women’s soccer team will get a stab at bronze today, 18-yearold Brooke Henderson was two strokes back of first place in women’s golf after the second round.

Team Canada went into the Games with the goal of a top-12 finish. Right now, they’re 12th.

Despite its medals, there have been questions of how truly successful Canada has been at the Olympics in Rio. A column in the Toronto Star this week challenged the nation’s achievements, noting that, in terms of medals measured against population, economy or size of their Olympic teams, the Maple Leaf isn’t stacking up all that well.

But, as I’m starting to learn, success at the Games isn’t always measured in medal count. Stories have been penned throughout the Games about young girls inspired by Oleksiak’s pool prowess or the strength of the women’s rugby team.

De Grasse may yet birth a new generation of track and field athletes, as Bailey once did.

Sure, I’d like to see Canada atop the medal table, challenging the likes of the United States or Great Britain for supremacy at the Games. But, leading the world or not, our athletes have made me want to watch this year.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR LACK OF HANDICAPPED PARKING DOWNTOWN AGGRAVATING Editor: I was a recent visitor to Kamloops and wanted to go out for dinner in downtown Kamloops.

Guess what?

There are no designated handicapped parking signs on Victoria Street (at least from Second Avenue to Fifth Avenue).

I contacted City Hall and was told that if I had a legal handicapped parking permit I could park in any available spot for free.

Yippee!

Where does it tell me that? This comment

was repeated numerous times by three different employees at City Hall.

I said if there was a designated spot for handicapped, others would not park there and therefore free up that spot.

I was told that maybe it would be taken by another handicapped car — bite my tongue.

I informed them I was not too slow to understand this could happen.

At least it would be occupied by a handicapped person.

Next, I was told, it was

decided at a meeting the city would lose revenue if designated spots were attributed.

Excuse me?

My pain due to having to walk for blocks if I wanted to eat or shop downtown is worth a lot more than the loss of revenue from four to six designated spots per block.

I am so embarrassed to call Kamloops my hometown. My parents lived there for more than 50 years.

Editor: Having just returned from what should have been a quick trip to Safeway on Fortune Drive — that turned into a lengthy wait at the only open checkout alongside several other frustrated shoppers — I feel compelled to express my opinion on the self checkouts being forced on shoppers in many stores.

These are a way for companies to reduce labour costs and make more profit.

We are doing the work of paid employees by using these self checkouts with no benefit to the customer.

Many people also find them difficult and frustrating to use.

The more they are utilized by shoppers, the more employees will lose their jobs, causing a ripple effect.

More people will be unemployed or underemployed.

Editor: I find it very disturbing that city staff salaries keep rising while so many citizens are finding it difficult to find employment.

Why do the people who raise our taxes have the authority to set their own salaries?

I think the criteria of taking the average of similar city staff in other cities does not make sense.

Kamloops taxes and salaries should reflect citizens’ ability to pay.

I cannot buy an expensive car or house because some of my neighbours have those items.

Anyone who makes $100,000 is

making enough.

If the job is that important, hire two people and give others a chance.

If you double a person’s salary, does that person do double the work?

I don’t think so.

How many toys do those staff members need?

A single mother with children has to pay the same price for a loaf of bread as that person making $200,000 or more.

This is not leadership It is simply greed.

It’s been talked about for years, but Gay Pooler thinks Kamloops’ downtown may finally be ready to stay up past 5 p.m.

“If somebody wants to eat, this is where they come and we also get the traffic for people going to Music in the Park,” said the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association general manager.

“Lots of times you come downtown in the evening and it’s hard to find a parking spot.”

With foot traffic on the rise and summer down to its last few weeks, the KCBIA is banding together with other tourism and business groups to launch an experiment that aims to prove just that.

From Aug. 22 to Sept. 2, downtown merchants will open their doors as late as 9 p.m. every night. The Alive After Five program will also feature street-side live music and other special activities, but Pooler said the focus is on those extended shopping hours.

Pooler said Rocky Mountain Rail Tours, which bring hundreds of tourists through the city six days per week, have been pushing hard to see more businesses open downtown.

“They do surveys of their guests all the time and the experience that their guests are having in Kamloops could be better, and one of the comments they do get is that there’s really not a lot open,” she said.

“So it’s a matter of saying let’s try being open.

Dickinson said a busy downtown can be marketed as a “distinctly Kamloops” experience to tourists who don’t come by rail, as well — people who are looking for a reason to stay in the city an extra day.

“We’re really encouraging merchants to get out and have a sidewalk presence and welcome people in to really build that great downtown summer vibe,” she said.

Regional district in line for $138K grant from provincial government The Thompson-Nicola Regional District received a grant of $138,351 from the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development in July, its Regional District Grant for 2016.

The grant is intended to be used for local government services.

Free disposal success

A total of 2,797 TNRD residents participated in free disposal days at their local facilities in April, bringing in 311 metric tons of material at scaled sites and 630 loads of material into non-scaled transfer stations in the district.

There were 174 cooling appliances and 372 tires on rims dropped off. The total tipping fees waived for all sites is valued at $50,480.60. The TNRD also paid Belkorp Environmental Services Inc. roughly $6,000 for additional staffing on event days.

period from Nov. 25, 2015 to Aug. 4, 2016.

Directors have access to funding that can be allocated for arts and cultural and general grant requests, at their discretion.

Near Kamloops, Electoral Area J director Ronaye Elliott allocated $2,000 to Savona’s Old Age Pensioners Organization for building renovations. She also awarded the Provincial Winter Fair Society $2,500 in sponsorship for the 4H Club Horse Competition at the fair.

Electoral Area L director Ken Gillis issued $1,200 for the patch and repair of the roof of the Westwold Community Hall and $1,900 for a encroachment survey for the same hall.

Electoral Area P director Mel Rothenburger doled out a total of $436.60 for fire danger rating signs and $1,680 for eco cards distributed to various residents.

VANCOUVER — After more than three decades, fashion retailer Aritzia is going public.

The Vancouver-based company announced yesterday that it plans on listing its shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The retailer says it wants to offer an undetermined number of shares at a price to be set later in the initial public offering process. The company will not receive any of the proceeds.

Founded in 1984, Aritzia designs and sells trendy clothing and accessories aimed at women between the ages of 15 to 45.

It opened its first store in Vancouver and now operates a network of 75 locations throughout Canada and the U.S. inside shopping malls and as stand-alone storefronts.

The company is co-owned by founder and chief executive Brian Hill and Boston-based investment firm Berkshire Partners, which has a majority interest. The two plan on controlling the company through multiple-vote shares.

In filings, Aritzia acknowledged that the Canadian retail industry is competitive but that it will achieve long-term profitability through a number of channels.

These include expanding and renovating its stores, growing its e-commerce business, innovating through its brands, and building its international presence.

“The difference is in the details,’’ Aritzia said in its preliminary prospectus.

“From the control that we maintain over the use of the Aritzia brand, to the highquality materials and fabrics we use in all of our products, to the investment we make in our aspirational stores, to the care that we take in interacting with our customers, all the way to the design of our shopping bags which have been recognized for their creativity and innovation.’’

Aritzia launched its e-commerce business in North America in late 2012, and plans on offering international shipping in the fall.

wants to grow to 25 per cent by 2021. Aritzia says it also plans on opening between 24 to 30 new stores by end of that year.

The company’s filing says it aims to grow annual revenue to between $1.1 billion and $1.2 billion by the end of its 2021 financial year — more than double the $542.4 million in its 2016 financial year.

It’s aiming for between $115 million and $130 million of adjusted earnings by the end of its 2021 financial year, up from $32.4 million of net income and $40.6 million of adjusted earnings in its 2016 financial year.

It has been a tough few years for clothing retailers in Canada.

In May, teen-clothing chain Aeropostale announced it was shuttering all 41 of its stores in Canada amid intense competition from fast-fashion retailers such as H&M, Forever 21 and Old Navy.

Several long-standing retailers have also recently announced they’re closing down or reducing their footprint in Canada in the past few years, including Le Chateau, Danier Leather, Mexx, Smart Set and Jacob.

Scientist says mine site change is ‘indefinite’ THE CANADIAN PRESS

YELLOWKNIFE — A study of lakes near Canada one of Canada’s most contaminated industrial sites suggests that the water immediately around Yellowknife’s Giant Mine won’t return to its natural state for generations — if ever.

The assessment comes despite a billion-dollar, taxpayer-funded plan to clean up thousands of tonnes of arsenic left by the shuttered gold mine on the outskirts of the Northwest Territories capital.

Jules Blais of the University of Ottawa said analysis of a small lake on the edge of the mine lease shows important plants and insects have been wiped out by arsenic contamination.

He said those parts of the ecosystem will never return, although the mine cut arsenic emissions decades ago and stopped producing entirely in 1999.

Blais estimated that 20,000 tonnes of the potent toxin were deposited on the ground in the mine’s early years — enough to alter the environment indefinitely.

Delinquency rates climb on Prairies OTTAWA — Delinquency rates in Alberta and Saskatchewan climbed higher in the second quarter due to the continued fallout from the drop in the price of oil.

Equifax Canada said the delinquency rate for Alberta stood at 1.4 per cent, up 40.3 per cent compared with a year ago. The rate in Saskatchewan climbed to 1.2 per cent, a gain of 22.7 per cent.

Newfoundland, which has also been hit by the downturn in oil, was up 19.4 per cent at 1.3 per cent.

The national delinquency rate was 1.1 per cent, up 4.1 per cent from a year ago.

The rise in delinquency came as the total amount Canadians owe increased in the second quarter to $1.66 trillion, up 6.3 per cent compared with a year ago, according to data compiled by Equifax.

The credit monitoring agency says the increase came due to growth in instalment loans, auto loans and mortgages. Excluding mortgages, consumers owed on average $21,878, up 3.4 per cent from a year ago.

Maple Bank given green light by CMHC TORONTO — Canada’s national housing agency gave Maple Bank GmbH’s Canadian branch the green light during a financial review, just one month before the federal banking watchdog seized the company’s assets amid a German tax investigation, documents show.

Documents obtained by The Canadian Press through an access-to-information request show that the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reviewed Maple Bank GmbH’s status as an issuer of mortgage-backed securities and a seller of Canada Mortgage Bonds in January 2016.

OTTAWA — With a fall deadline approaching, Canada’s chief negotiator in the softwood-lumber talks with the United States says the two sides remain far apart on several key issues.

Martin Moen told a parliamentary committee yesterday that negotiations for a new softwood deal have continued at an intensive pace with engagement reaching the highest levels between the countries.

But despite the efforts, Moen acknowledged that reaching a deal by the fall deadline will be a challenge.

Industry, he added, should prepare for the possibility that there will be no agreement and the risk Canada will be forced into litigation.

Failure to reach a deal by Oct. 15 — the one-year anniversary of the expiry of the old, nine-year pact — would allow U.S. producers to petition Washington to impose new duties.

Moen said without an agreement in place, Canadian officials are unsure what U.S. industry would actually do — and when.

“Although discussions have been constructive and have led to a better understanding of each party’s positions and concerns, Canada and the U.S. — I have to be honest — we do remain far apart on several key issues,’’ Moen told a special meeting of the all-party, international trade committee.

“There are considerable gaps that will need to be bridged in order for a new agreement to be concluded. Negotiations are continuing with the goal of reaching an agreement by the end of the standstill period.’’

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has spoken with U.S. President Barack Obama about the need to strike a new softwood lumber deal.

The leaders have expressed optimism that a compromise could stave off fresh battles in the long-running softwoodlumber war.

Officials from Canada and the U.S. have met 12 times faceto-face and have held numerous teleconferences to discuss the issue, Moen said. The next meeting, he added, is scheduled for next week.

He also mentioned a few of the sticking points around the bargaining table.

They include, he said, determining an appropriate structure, for example, on how to use some combination of export charges and export quotas. This structure, he added, should be designed to maintain Canadian exports at or below an agreed U.S. market share, which is still to be negotiated.

Moen also said there are talks on meaningful regional exclusions for Atlantic provinces and the territories as well as on provisions for company exclusions, including, for example, mills sourcing inputs from the U.S. or private lands.

He added that discussions are still underway about the

treatment of high-value products and re-manufacturers.

He described the talks as much different than other trade deals in the sense that Ottawa is seeking a deal in which American producers would have to forgo their rights under U.S. law to seek trade action against Canadian lumber and lumber products.

“Nonetheless, Canadian stakeholders continue to tell us very clearly that no deal is better than a bad deal,’’ Moen said.

“We’re continuing to be intensely engaged in trying to see if a good deal is possible, however, we are preparing for all eventualities and are prepared to vigorously protect and defend the interests of softwood-lumber producers if there is a return to trade action, to litigation.’’

The Conservatives proposed a motion to the committee yesterday that sought to call on International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland to establish a roundtable consisting of herself, government officials from each province and industry stakeholders.

The goal was to develop a national position on a new softwood lumber deal.

Tory MP Randy Hoback argued in favour of the motion, saying there’s confusion in the industry.

But the Liberal-dominated committee voted down the motion, with Liberal MP Kyle Peterson saying it would duplicate the ongoing process and slow things down.

NEW YORK — Gawker.com, the brash New York website that broke new ground with its gossipy, no-holds-barred coverage of media, culture and politics, is shutting down after 14 years, brought low by an unhappy, but deep-pocketed, subject.

The news — appropriately enough, broken by Gawker itself — follows the sale of the site’s parent company to Univision.

Founder Nick Denton reportedly told staffers yesterday afternoon that gawker.com will come to an end next week.

Twitter immediately went berserk in an unholy

melange of shock, sadness and Schadenfreude.

Univision, the Spanishlanguage broadcaster, is buying the parent company, Gawker Media, for $135 million; the sale follows Gawker’s loss in a major invasion-of-privacy case brought by the former pro wrestler Hulk Hogan. Gawker had published a video of Hogan having sex with a friend’s wife.

A Florida court awarded Hogan, whose lawsuit was secretly backed by an aggrieved Silicon Valley billionaire, $140 million in damages. Gawker Media went into bankruptcy protection after the verdict, and a judge had to approve the sale

at a hearing yesterday.

“The real shame is that Gawker gave Hogan a sledgehammer with which [to] pulverize it in state court,’’ New York University journalism professor Adam Penenberg tweeted.

“If you want to ascribe blame, blame Denton.’’

Other Gawker Media blogs may live on. The company currently publishes seven sites in addition to gawker.com, including the feminist-focused Jezebel, the tech site Gizmodo and the sports site Deadspin. Univision wants those properties to help build a more youthful audience than that commanded by broadcast TV.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazilian police said yesterday that swimmer Ryan Lochte and U.S. teammates were not robbed after a night of partying, and that the intoxicated athletes instead vandalized a gas station bathroom and were questioned by guards before they paid for the damage and left.

The robbery that was or wasn’t has become the biggest spectacle outside of the Olympic venues in Rio, and given American swimming a black eye in Brazil after an otherwise remarkable run at the Summer Games.

“No robbery was committed against these athletes. They were not victims of the crimes they claimed,’’ Civil Police Chief Fernando Veloso said during an afternoon news conference.

Lochte had initially said that he and teammates Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Jimmy Feigen were held at gunpoint and robbed after a night of partying on the final night of Olympic swimming.

Police said earlier this week that they couldn’t find evidence to substantiate the claim, and a judge ordered the swimmers’ passports held as the investigation continued. Lochte had already returned to the U.S. While some details in the official account of the story changed yesterday — police first said no guns were involved, then backtracked and said two guards pointed weapons in their direction — security video confirmed that the athletes vandalized parts of the gas station, leading to an encounter with station employees.

The closed-circuit video shows the four in

an alley walking toward a bathroom. At one point one of them pulls a sign off of a wall and drops it on the ground behind them. A gas station worker arrives, and other workers go to inspect the damage.

Another camera then shows the swimmers in a cab, when security guards arrive.

All four swimmers exit the cab and talk with the guards, who persuade them to walk to another section of the gas station. The cab they arrived in then leaves.

Seconds later, Lochte falls to the ground and is helped up. Then two of the swimmers put their hands up and all four sit down on a curb as they speak to multiple people standing in front of them. After several minutes of talking, they stand up and appear to exchange something — perhaps cash — with one of the men.

Veloso said the swimmers broke a door, a soap dispenser and a mirror.

A police official speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing said two guards pointed guns at the swimmers. The official also said the station manager asked a customer for help with translation, and asked for money to pay for the broken door, and the swimmers gave him an undetermined amount of cash, and then left.

Veloso declined to say whether the guards pulled their weapons,

but said they did not use excessive force and would have been justified in drawing their guns because the athletes were large, strong men who “were conducting themselves in a violent way.’’

The people at the gas station didn’t speak English and the athletes didn’t speak Portuguese, causing “confusion’’ in the situation. Veloso said.

Still, Veloso said he took issue with the way Lochte and the other athletes conducted themselves after the incident.

“Rio residents saw the name of their city sullied by this fantasy version [of events],’’ Veloso said. “It would be noble and worthy of them to apologize.’’

Lochte’s attorney, Jeff Ostrow, has maintained that there is no question the robbery occurred. He, as well as Lochte’s father and agent, did not return phone calls seeking comment.

After days of confusion, the situation escalated late Wednesday night when Conger and Bentz were pulled from a flight at Rio’s airport.

The official also said that Conger and Bentz said in interviews after they were taken off the plane that the story of the robbery had been fabricated.

Brazilian authorities pressed the American swimmers. Police said the swimmers failed to provide key details in early interviews and they found little evidence to support the robbery claim.

Bazian to make Rugby Canada debut ADAM WILLIAMS

he next time Canada wins an Olympic medal in sevens rugby, Brooke Bazian is counting on one of them being hung around her neck.

Bazian, a 17-year-old product of the South Kamloops Titans’ rugby program, will get her first crack at international competition later this year, when she travels to Vichy, France, for the Rugby Europe Women’s Under-18 Sevens Championship in September.

Bazian’s position on the U18 national team is just the first step in what she hopes will be a long career for the Maple Leaf.

“It was kind of a shock actually,” Bazian said of being named to the team.

“I was pretty confident in

myself, but mainly I just thought this is a big opportunity and I didn’t want to miss out.”

Rugby is a family sport for Bazian, whose mother, Pam Pickering, was a member of Canada’s first women’s national team in 1987, then a 22-year-old university student.

Pickering said her daughter’s play reminds her of her own at times, especially her never-quit attitude.

“She’ll chase someone down

from across the field and I sort of have that tendency as well,” Pickering said.

“She’s faster, I think, than I was.

She has no fear. She has never had an injury in all of her sports, so she has no fear and I think you need that to excel to the next level.”

Pickering said her daughter was “an animal” when she first tried out for the Titans as a Grade 10 student. From there, she went on to compete for B.C. at the Canadian national championship in March and was an integral part of a titlewinning team.

Previously a multi-sport athlete who excelled in soccer, basketball and field hockey, rugby was the new front-runner for Bazian.

The timing couldn’t be better, with sevens rugby reaching new heights of popularity with its debut at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro and Canada’s women winning a bronze medal.

“When we played at the national tournament . . . we only had five points scored on us the whole tournament and I would attribute that to Brooke, because she made three try-saving tackles on the 2-metre line before the try zone and she chased them down across the field,” said Darcy Patterson, Bazian’s coach with Team B.C. at nationals.

“Brooke’s work ethic is beyond anyone at this level. Her tenacity and her work ethic on the field is amazing. She never stops.”

Patterson said the championship in France gives Bazian the opportunity to impress the Team Canada brass. The 16-team tournament will see 13th-ranked Canada play in a pool with No. 4 Portugal, No. 5 Netherlands and No. 12 France.

The importance of the event isn’t lost on Bazian. After seeing Canada win its bronze in Rio, she is as motivated as ever to take her

game to the next level.

“It’s actually a realistic goal for me to go to the Olympics,” Bazian said. The U18 coaching staff has told its players they are the future for the Olympic program.

“Seeing Team Canada win bronze was really cool because the men didn’t even make it for Canada. So that was really cool that Canada represented in a female category.”

For Pickering, who played rugby at a time when she said men saw women as “bastardizing the sport,” there’s a mixture of pride and excitement in looking at the future for her daughter.

“The carrot is there. It’s all up to her if she seizes it,” Pickering said.

“If she works really hard, there’s a very good possibility she could get there. That was never even in my foresight, hindsight, at all when I played.

“Women and rugby have come a long way.”

SYDOR CAN SEE COACHING BLAZERS IN FUTURE MARTY HASTINGS STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com

Darryl Sydor can picture himself behind the bench in Kamloops in the not too distant future.

“Yeah, it could be getting there, a little bit closer to that,” said Sydor, part of the Blazers’ ownership group.

“My kids are getting to the age where a couple more years of high school and then it’s university. We love Kamloops. My son keeps on saying he’s going to go to TRU.” Bruce Boudreau took over as head coach of the Minnesota Wild in May, leaving Sydor and Rick Wilson out of work. They had served as assistant coaches under Mike Yeo before he was fired in February and replaced by interim head coach John Torchetti.

Sydor, who spent five years as an assistant in Minnesota, found a job with the Chicago Wolves in July after interviews with NHL teams didn’t pan out.

The Wolves are the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the St. Louis Blues. Sydor will serve as an assistant coach under head coach Craig Berube.

“It’s a different mindset. You’re back to teaching players at the

AHL level,” Sydor said. “Their eyes and ears are wide open. They want to learn and get to the next level.”

Sydor hit rock bottom when he was arrested for drunk driving with his 12-year-old son in the vehicle in Minnesota last summer. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail and spent two weekends at the Anoka County Workhouse, in addition to time served before the conviction.

He sought treatment in

California and the eye-opening stint at the inpatient centre changed his outlook on life — and coaching.

“I never really thought I would want to be a head coach, but I’m a different person now,” Sydor, 44, told KTW. “I like teaching the game and I like teaching kids, and head coach could be a possibility in a few years, who knows.”

Sydor capped a four-year

junior career in Kamloops with a Memorial Cup with the Blazers in 1992 and his family — wife Sharlene and their four sons, Parker, Braden, Dylan and Cooper — often summers in the Shuswap.

Sydor was drafted seventh overall in 1990 by the Los Angeles Kings, played 18 seasons with six NHL teams, ranks 18th all-time among defencemen with 1,291 regular-season games and won two Stanley Cups.

“We haven’t been in that jobsecurity-type atmosphere, just because of the profession I picked, but it’s been fun, interesting and you get to meet a lot of people,” Sydor said. “We’re just going to enjoy the next adventure.”

He started his coaching career in the AHL as an assistant under Yeo with the Houston Aeros in 2010-2011 and helped lead the team to a Western Conference championship before the duo joined the Wild in time for the 2011-2012 campaign.

Yeo was hired as an assistant with the Blues in June and has been pegged to take over from head coach Ken Hitchcock, who will likely relinquish the position after 2016-2017.

Given the history Sydor has with Yeo, it’s easy to speculate about a reunion in St.Louis, along with a return to Kamloops when the Don Hay era is over.

“We’ve got to enjoy the next year, re-evaluate as a family and see where we want to go,” Sydor said.

“This year was really eye-opening for me, with everything I’ve gone through. I just feel confident in myself. You take it all in and who knows what’s going to come about.”

An item on the shelf was missing, a review of the security video revealed that this couple was responsible for the theft. The male is described as First Nations, late 30’s, husky build, short hair and at the time was wearing a blue tank top with red and black shorts. This suspect must have thought he got away with this the crime but he was caught on the surveillance camera at

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, late 20’s, short light coloured hair, with a light coloured beard and was wearing a grey hoodie with a white full length zipper in the front. Six months ago, Marie-Philip Poulin was inspiring Kamloops’ female hockey players on the international stage.

Last week, she was doing it on a much smaller scale.

Poulin was in Kamloops for three days last week, coaching 30 local girls in the third-annual Future Stars ice hockey camp at Brock Arena.

“I’m really excited, but mixed feelings for sure,” a smiling Poulin said of her return to Kamloops.

Canada lost to the United States in overtime of the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Championship at Sandman Centre, 1-0.

“It was such an exciting moment when we came here,” she said. “Not the end result, for sure, but the crowd that was there, the people that came to support us, it was just amazing.

“Being back here with the girls on the ice and being able to teach, it’s quite awesome for sure.”

Future Stars camps began in 2010, when former Olympic runner George Short had the idea to give young high-performance athletes the opportunity to work with and learn from Canadian Olympians.

Since then, camps have been held in every province in Canada and have connected Olympians with hundreds of athletes — in athletics, basketball, figure skating, swimming, ice hockey, field hockey, volleyball, soccer, mountain biking and rowing — across the nation.

And, in a sense, the program got its start in Kamloops.

“Actually, our very first camp was at the TCC in swimming. That was our very first camp and we’ve just expanded from there,” said Short, whose personal Olympic career involved running in the 100-metre dash and the 4x100-metre relay for

Canada at the 1960 Games in Rome.

“The idea was really to bring to kids the idea of being an Olympic athlete because a lot of kids have that in their minds, but they don’t know what it means [to get there].”

Poulin said she focuses on teaching girls to push themselves out of their comfort zones in a camp situation like the one in Kamloops. She also tries to make sure the girls have fun, but work hard at the same time.

But speaking with camp participants Carsen Moffett, Dawson Benson and Sydney Clare following practice Friday, it was clear Poulin’s personal journey and the sacrifices she made to play hockey, the topic of the lecture portion of the weekend, was on most girls’ minds.

“She really had to push herself,” Moffett said.

“She’s French and she had to go to an English school and move away when she was only 15. That really stood out.”

Moffett also went to the Future Stars camp two years ago, when Meghan Agosta was in Kamloops.

“These are the girls you look up to and see on TV,” she said.

“It’s really cool getting to have that opportunity.”

Poulin will soon turn her attention to a new Canadian Women’s Hockey League season, with training camps beginning around the nation shortly and the professional league’s 10th season set to begin in October.

After Poulin’s Les Canadiennes de Montréal lost to the Calgary Inferno in last year’s Clarkson Cup final, the two-time Olympic gold medallist is looking to bring the women’s title back to Quebec in 2016-2017.

“I can’t believe summer is almost over but I’m really excited to start a new season,” the 25-year-old said.

Future Stars will return to Kamloops in 2017 with 2014 Olympic gold medallist and Calgary Inferno forward Brianne Jenner set to host.

Jones wins junior tour The final event of the Kamloops Junior Golf Tour was held at Rivershore Golf Links on Monday.

A lot was at stake, including the overall Order of Merit title, which went to Carter Jones of Rivershore.

The podium finishers were Jones, second-place finisher Brody Brook and bronze-medallist Zander Carnelley.

Joe Gatenby ran over Jake Kryski and broke his nose with a crunching hit at Sandman Centre on March 4.

Their WHL stories collided again yesterday afternoon.

The Kamloops Blazers traded Kryski, 18, to the Rockets in exchange for 19-yearold defenceman Joe Gatenby, 18-year-old D-man Daniel Gatenby and a conditional fifthround WHL Bantam Draft pick in 2019.

“We thought we had a talented defence, but we didn’t have the experience that Joe brings us,” Blazers’ general manager Stu MacGregor said.

“He’s a competitive, very high-end defenceman, moves the puck smartly and quickly and has played against everybody’s top players for the last two seasons.”

Kamloops lost its anchor on the back end when Ryan Rehill aged out of junior hockey last season and was in need of a veteran leader to fill the void.

Joe Gatenby, 6-foot and 185 pounds, has played 174 regularseason games with the Rockets over the past three seasons, has 44 points and is plus-64 over his career.

He has played 52 playoff games, including five at the Memorial Cup tournament.

Danny Gatenby, Joe’s younger brother, is 6-foot-3 and weighs 180 pounds. He played 22 games with Kelowna in 2015-2016 and 15 games for the Okanagan Rockets of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League.

“Daniel gives us some depth to have real competition for positions throughout the lineup and defence corps,” MacGregor said.

Dallas Valentine, 20, Cameron Reagan, 19, Ondrej Vala and Dawson Davidson,

both 18, Conner McDonald and Nolan Kneen, both 17, and 16-year-old prospect Luke Zazula are returning to the fold this season.

Former Blazers’ GM Craig Bonner acquired Kryski from the Prince Albert Raiders in a deal that sent goaltender Cole Cheveldave the other way in July of 2013.

Kryski, from Vancouver, was a highly touted forward, having been selected 13th overall in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. He compiled 65 points in 136 games with the blue and orange.

He often showed glimpses of the skill and vision he possesses and will have every chance to reach his potential in the Little Apple playing alongside the likes of Nick Merkley and Dillon Dube.

“When you get a player like this, you have to pay a price,” MacGregor said. “It’s a steep price, but we felt we needed to address a need and allow our younger group to develop properly.”

Rourke Chartier will likely play in the AHL this season and fellow overager Justin Kirkland — two of Kelowna’s top offensive weapons — might also play pro hockey in 2016-2017, so finding a top-six forward was high on the Rockets’ to-do list.

Kelowna also had four 1997-born defencemen on its roster — Joe Gatenby, Gordie Ballhorn, Lucas Johansen and Devante Stephens — and was looking to clear some room on the blue line.

“We have an abundance of defencemen and we had an opportunity to get a high-end 1998-born forward, which is a spot we had some room,” Rockets’ GM Bruce Hamilton said.

The Gatenby brothers are from Kelowna.

Reporting to the Director of Public Works, the Equipment Operator 3 is responsible for general duties assigned in the Public Works Department including manual labor and equipment operation.

The Equipment Operator 3 will also assist in all facets of the Public Works Department, including water and sewer repair, road maintenance and repair, parks maintenance and repair, and fence line repair. Other general duties may be required from time to time.

Working from our Kamloops Resource Centre, the Coordinator delivers the Society’s core programs including information, support services, and education.

Responsibilities include: delivering workshops for caregivers, people with early symptoms, and the public, developing/overseeing support groups for family/friend caregivers and people with early symptoms of dementia, volunteer management, develop/maintain relationships with health care professionals, managing the referral process, maintaining databases.

Candidates should have degree and up to 3 years’ experience in health/social services, knowledge of/experience with Alzheimer’s disease/dementia and caregiving issues.

Knowledge of MS Office, time management skills, ability to work independently w/strong attention to detail. Experience providing support/ education in human services environment, presentation skills, volunteer management, and development of community connections.

Some evening and weekend work required. Must be able to drive and have reliable transportation.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Celebration of Life

Phyllis Faye DeBoice The family of Phyllis Faye DeBoice must announce her passing on July 22, 2016. Mom was born in Edmonton, Alberta on September 23, 1937 to John and Anna Kornberger. She leaves behind many, many friends and her four loving children and their families: son Brian (Brenda) and their son Bradley; son Richard (Janet Yaremchuk), daughter Deborah Rowland (Kevin Heffernan) and her son Cy Rowland; daughter Cheryl (Dale Browett) and her son Joe Davis; Ted Rowland and Rob Davis. She is also survived by her brother Don (Anne) and their family. She was “Nana” to Kristie, Shane, Cherie and many more young people over the years. Her greatest, most treasured accomplishment was seeing that her family grew up big and strong.

Immediately after moving the family to Vernon from Alberta in 1968, Mom began her legacy as a community supporter and leader. You may have crossed paths with her as a volunteer at Vernon Racing Days, Boys Scouts, the Vernon Girls Trumpet Band, and Vernon Winter Carnival or perhaps on her run for Vernon City Council. As a pioneer of recycling in Vernon and the Okanagan in the 70’s and 80’s, she built the foundation of the recycling movement. After retiring from Swan Lake Nurseryland she moved to Kamloops to be closer to her daughters and continued her volunteer work at the Hospice thrift store there.

The care given to mom by her girls was with exemplary love. Furthermore, Brian, Richard, Deb and their families want to express our profound gratitude to Cheryl and Dale for their excellent caregiving right to the end. Mom did not a want a service, only to be cremated. Cremation was in the care of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation, Kamloops. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make a donation to their local Hospice.

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of John Laughlin (Bud) Whitfield on August 14, 2016 at 78 years of age.

Bud is survived by his wife of 40 years Kathy. Children John, Jason, Carlea and Christina (Elliott) and his grandchildren Ella, Landon and Easton.

Bud grew up on a dairy farm in Bellville, Ontario where he was the youngest of six children. He came out west to Vancouver and was there that he met the love of his life Kathy. Bud was passionate about nature and especially hiking. He instilled his love for the outdoors in his children by taking them on numerous hiking and camping trips. One place he fell in love with was Stein Valley.

One of Bud’s greatest joys later in his life were his grandchildren, he loved watching his “babies” grow and learn new things, they could do no wrong in his eyes.

There will be no formal service by his request.

Happiness in life is to love and be loved It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ross Waslenchuk our beloved husband, father, uncle and friend; just 11 days short of his 67th birthday. Forever remembered by his loving wife of 34 years Brenda, and his son Brent. Ross was predeceased by his mother Mickey (2008), his father Nick (2012) and his brother Dennis (2015).

He was born in Calgary but moved at a young age to Monte Creek where his parents ran the Chevron station. After graduating high school in Kamloops (1967) Ross worked at a number of different jobs including I.D.L. and Sears, but ultimately decided to return to school in 1976 earning an Electronics degree from Cariboo College. He took a job with BC Tel in Port Coquitlam but always dreamed of returning home to Kamloops which he did as an Installation & Repair supervisor in 1988, following the birth of his son. Ross spent 20 years in the telephone industry before deciding to be his own boss, taking on the challenges of running two successful Petro-Canada gas stations. Ross was also busy during this time coaching his son’s minor hockey teams. He especially enjoyed mentoring young minds while teaching the basic principles of life using sport as a model. He retired in August 2005 and was active doing some of his favorite things such as golfing, camping, fishing, playing pickleball and attending Blazer games. Ross was also fond of travelling south to Yuma, AZ. He had many “happy hours” in the dry desert heat, playing in the sun and meeting new friends.

Ross was an avid reader enjoying novels and using the internet as a tool to quench his constant thirst for knowledge. He was our “go to” guy; always there to support his friends and family with his enthusiastic spirit, excellent sense of humor, and well rounded advice. He never complained about what he had been dealt in life, always choosing to see the glass half full. There are no words to express the pain we feel. He will be greatly missed and in our hearts always. Special thanks to Dr.’s Stan Fike, Paul Farrell and Shailendra Prasad. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Kamloops Hospice Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC would be appreciated.

Paul Johannus Vos of Kamloops, BC passed away on August 5, 2016 at 86 years of age.

Ernie passed away peacefully on August 14th, 2016.

He leaves behind his wife Trudy of 60 years, and his four children Judy (Kevin) Laughington, Arnie (Linda) Budd, Amii (Mark) Spooner and Audrey (Brian) Hemelspeck. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren Alisa (Shayne), Jared (Lisa), Tasha, Lana (Brad), Theo, Erika, Cole, Quinn, Deavon (Samantha), Mason, Amy and his great-grandchildren Hannah, Emily, Ava, Madison, Zahria and Ty. Also left to cherish his memory are his siblings Adam (Marjorie), June and Joe. Born to Albert and Elizabeth Butwilofski in Tramping Lake, Saskatchewan on August 26, 1935, he lived his childhood on the family farm. His family relocated to Edmonton, Alberta where he met his wife Trudy in 1956, and then eventually moved to Kamloops, BC in 1977.

Ernie was a hardworking man and enjoyed a long career in the automotive industry. He had a talent for car sales due to his charismatic personality and an easy going manner. He loved cars and he loved people, so his choice of career was a perfect fit for him!

He enjoyed numerous family and friend gatherings and was always the life of the party!

Klondike Days in Edmonton was one of his favorite times and he celebrated by dressing up in traditional Klondike attire, hosting large outdoor neighbourhood breakfasts. The annual Grey Cup party was also a favorite event where he served his famous Ernie Balls (secret recipe meatballs). Ernie (affectionately nicknamed by many as Big Ern) also loved to dance and could swing his hips to the likes of Elvis!

Ernie’s greatest gift that he passed onto his family was teaching them the value and importance of family. Nightly family dinners were always a norm where the family gathered to share in the days’ events and reconnect. Throughout his life he was also very involved in his grandchildren’s activities spending countless hours watching soccer games, basketball games, hockey games, school plays and performances.

After retiring, Ernie enjoyed woodworking (especially making wooden cars) and made several wonderful pieces for his family that are still treasured today. He also showed a great interest in cooking and enjoyed making homemade perogies and sausages. He also had a passion for collectibles, mostly model cars both old and new.

He will be sadly missed, but the memories will be cherished in our hearts forever.

A Memorial Celebration of Life for Ernie will be held on Friday, August 26th at 11:00 a.m. at First Memorial Funeral Service, 8-177 Tranquille Rd., Kamloops, BC followed by a reception and inurnment at Hillside Cemetery.

Paul was born in Holland and came to Canada in 1953 with his wife and two children. Paul loved to fish, hunt, tend to his garden, especially his flowers. Paul worked for the Local 602 Union for many years.

The Venerable Gary Paterson 1939 - 2016 Gary Paterson died on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at Royal Inland Hospital as the result of a stroke.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, daughters Anne Paterson-Welsh (Warren), Sharon Paterson (Nick Heap) and Sarah Stratton (Len) and granddaughters, Isabel, Ella, Imogen and Genevieve. He is also survived by his sister Susan Hood (Graham) and brother-inlaw Peter DeVille (Dorothy) and seven nieces and nephews and their families.

Predeceased by nieces Pamela DeVille and Becky Halsey.

Gary was born in Smiths Falls, Ontario and spent his teen years in Brantford, where he met Barbara. After graduating from Huron College (London) he was ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada.

Gary served parishes in Windsor, Churchill, Prince Rupert and Regina.

After retirement in 2001, Gary and Barb moved to Kamloops where he enjoyed more time for travelling, canoeing, squash, swimming and cross-country skiing.

T

he house’s front door is open and the lights are on, but no one’s home. It looks like a lucky break to homeless widower Thomas — until he wakes up from a nap to find a loaded revolver in his lap and the house’s doors and windows inoperable and unbreakable from the inside.

That’s the setup for The Shelter, a new film starring Michael Pare (Eddie and the Cruisers, The Virgin Suicides)

from Montreal-based director John Fallon which features a special Kamloops connection, thanks to local musi-

cian and composer Shawn Seagal.

Seagal met Fallon several years ago after inviting him to screen some of the work he’d produced and written at Darkfest, the horrorthemed arm of the Kamloops Film Festival he co-organizes with fellow film-buff Jason Hewlett.

During discussion about the movie business one evening, Fallon complained good screenwriters and composers were in

short supply.

“I actually noticed Shawn playing the piano before Darkfest started in the auditorium and right away I picked up that he was incredibly talented,” Fallon recalled.

“I said, when I do my first film as a director, you’re going to write the music.”

When he prepared to make his directorial debut with The Shelter a few years later, Seagal got the call. It was a pleasant surprise.

“We knew he kind of meant it, but we didn’t know he really meant it,” he said.

Seagal has composed for hire before, including producing music for some of Fallon’s shorter works, but working on a full film score was a new challenge, in part because the two were collaborating with most of the country between them.

Eyes are a common theme among the many versions created for George Orwell’s 1984.

Covers for Jurassic Park and A Clockwork Orange were so effective film makers borrowed the artwork for branding.

As for book titles and bylines, black letter — think Old English font — was based on the handwriting of scribes and dates back to the invention of the printing press.

It was later when san-serifs paved the way for structured modern-looking typefaces like Helvetica, an ‘invisible’ font that

“Great example,” said McGarry, a local artist and teacher, noting a website (bancomicsans.com) dedicated to quashing the font.

“Apparently this graphic designer didn’t read the book,” McGarry said, pointing out another cover.

attended Art History Happy Hour, a new educational program at the Kamloops Art Gallery. The free lecture series features a different topic each month for people ages 19 and older.

The idea is to pop into the gallery right after work, have a drink — they’ve got a liquor license to sell beer and wine for the hour — and learn about art.

“If you know absolutely nothing about art but you’re just kind of curious, this program

is a gateway to kind of going, ‘Hey, this is how I can explore these ideas,’” said KAG interim executive director Margaret Chrumka.

“This is not freaky and scary. I’m holding a glass of wine.”

The lectures are connected to other things happening at the gallery.

The History of Book Covers, which KTW checked out, was linked to DIY Thursdays’ zine making workshop.

Only a couple sessions in, Chrumka hopes to tap into the success of another gallery program with a social element.

Drink and Draw started at the Noble Pig before outgrowing the space, since expanding to several locations.

“That’s enormous for us now,” she said.

“We started at one location and now we’re at three. Most of them get between 25 and 50 participants a session, which is wonderful for a community this size.”

Art History Happy Hour continues through December.

The gallery reevaluates programming every six months. While attendance is one thing they consider, Chrumka is looking for something else to determine whether Art History Happy Hour will be renewed.

“You feel the buzz.”

Lectures are free but beer and wine are $5. The next one is at 5 p.m. on Sept. 8, featuring Ryland Fortie’s artist talk and workshop.

By Dale Bass, KTW Sure, the headlining act won’t be there in person, but odds are when Greg Drummond takes the stage at Riverside Park tomorrow, he’ll still be facing one big crowd.

The B.C. musician will be performing immediately after the live streaming of the final Tragically Hip concert. That Kingston performance will also be shown live at McDonald Park.

Both are fundraisers for the Canadian Cancer Society in recognition of the terminal brain cancer of lead singer Gord Downie.

Drummond’s most recent recording, Drive — released last year — has been described as “a compelling exploration through the themes of redemption, companionship, struggle and perseverance, with dynamic instrumentation that transports the audience through the majestic, ambient expanse of B.C.’s wilderness, to the thumping pulse of a wharf pub on the coast of Newfoundland.”

He debuted in the country’s music world in 2011 with Walking Man and, since then, has been part of the CBC Searchlight Top 10, competed in the Peak Performance Project and made it to the Top 20 and received The Shore 104.3FM Best of B.C. Award. The Hip concert in the band’s Ontario hometown starts at 5:30 p.m. and will be streamed commercial-free on the CBC, CBC Radio One and Two, cbcmusic.ca and the national network’s YouTube channels.

Watch Zootopia in the park, help Big Brothers Big Sisters The annual Moonlight Movie Night will feature Zootopia on the big screen at Riverside Park.

It’s a fundraiser for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops, which will be given all donations received at the Aug. 26 screening.

Suggested donations are $3 per person or $10 for a family.

People will also be admitted if they donate a bag of used clothing to the agency’s Renew Crew.

There will be tug of war and sack races with members of the Kamloops Broncos, a giant Lego mat where everyone can help build, a putting green and a rubber chicken toss.

Popcorn and other movie treats will be available by donation.

The event starts at 7 p.m.

Play on ancient story

Savage Production Society will present The Boy Who Was Abandoned on Sept.

4 at the Lytton River Festival during a weekend of events celebrating the Fraser and Thompson rivers.

The play, based on an ancient story from the N’lakap’amux Nation, is about an ill-behaved boy whose family blinded his eyes

with pitch and left him tied to a tree in the forest.

He frees himself and, although unable to see, learns to hunt, fish and provide for himself with help from the animals.

It’s a story of redemption, a parable about how “you can’t throw people away just because you find them inconvenient,” said Kevin Loring, the society’s artistic director.

However, unlike most composers, he was able to see The Shelter’s script early on in the process.

“I’d do a scene of the movie and send it to him for his approval and he’d send me back notes of what he wanted, what he liked or didn’t like,” Seagal said.

“It was probably a little longer than the process normally is, but I think it worked out pretty good.”

It was also a new experience for Fallon, a new director who’d never overseen a film score either.

“It’s a fairly morose film so there’s not much in terms of chipper music. I would say the bulk of the movie is sombre and sad music, and weird, eerie, ominous music,” he said.

“It’s about going scene by scene and looking at what the scene is trying to say,

and then getting the music to amplify the themes.”

Fallon said he’s hoping this could be the

first of many Kamloops collaborations. He’s also working with Hewlett, a trained screenwriter, on other projects, and

was in Kamloops this month to location scout for his next film.

“It’s a very different kind of picture than The Shelter, which was a very intimate and cerebral film,” he said of the new work. “This one is more tough guys on horses having to go through a series of obstacles, and there’s a who-done-it.”

While it’s unclear if The Shelter will come to Kamloops, Seagal said he’s hopeful he’ll get a chance to have the full, big-screen experience with the film.

If it does make it here, Fallon said to expect a film that takes cues from filmmakers like David Lynch and Roman Polanski, rather than the typical horror blockbuster.

“Do not expect a movie that is one, two, three. It’s a movie that is one, around the block, then around here, then three. It’s an odd film,” he said.

July. The previous record was set in 2012, when 2,727 theatre-goers went to Prince Charles Park for the outdoor festival.

Fall’s the time to try something new.

Maybe you even say it.

“I’m no artist. Can’t even draw a straight line.”

“Play guitar? In my younger days, sure, but who has the time?”

“My sister’s always been the dancer in the family.”

We all know those lucky folks who were born holding a paintbrush but, for many of us, the natural desire to practise art gets squelched when we’re young.

A teacher tells us we can’t sing, so we voicelessly mouth the words.

The brother who gets all the praise for his writing, so we just give up — why try?

discover latent sculpting skills. Engineers become budding musicians. And corrections officers can transform into actors.

Learning an art form needn’t be highpressure — after all, it’s just a way to play.

Local artist, writer and creativity coach Janet Whitehead (musingsandmud.com) helps adults do just that.

“I’ve had a lot of clients start their creative careers over 50,” she says, “including one beautiful woman who started writing in her late 70s.”

It’s never too late.

But why wait?

Between City of Kamloops recreation classes and a number of studios, organizations and artists who offer classes, workshops or private lessons in painting, belly-

dance, hip hop, drumming or photography, to name a few, you’ve got lots of options.

If you’re nervous, little ones can be a great cover and the impetus to force you out of your shell.

(I’m convinced the Kamloops Children’s Arts Festival is a hit, in part, because the parents and grandparents have just as much fun as the kids.)

You may not become the next David Langevin, but learning an art form will enrich your life.

Learning a new skill is great for the brain as we age, too.

Last spring, I took a giant leap out of my comfort zone and signed up for dance classes (terrifying — major brain/body disconnect here, folks).

duo coming to festival this fall

Singer-songwriters Robyn Hardy and Lorraine Pond — better known as Bobs and LoLo — will perform at Sagebrush Theatre on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.

The creators and stars of the preschool series Sing, Dance and Play with Bobs and LoLo were recently named Canada’s Favourite Kids’ Entertainer in a nationwide poll by CBC Music.

“We are so excited to be bringing our music and programming to Sagebrush Theatre next month,” Pond said.

“Our live performances are definitely not just about us, though, and we encourage everyone — kids, parents and caregivers — to get on their feet and sing and dance along. Music is truly a universal language and such a magical tool for engaging young audiences.”

The show begins at 2 p.m. (doors 1:30 p.m.).

The show is part of the 2016 Kamloops Children’s Festival, which happens Sept. 17 and Sept. 18.

We all know William Shakespeare.

Four hundred years after he penned his classic plays, we are still attending their live performances, making movies of them and studying them in high schools and universities.

Clearly he was a brilliant artist with a pen, whose ideas and dramatic flair have inspired countless generations in a multitude of countries.

It is the same with Christian authors.

Obviously the Bible is the primary sourcebook of the faith, but it has inspired many writers over the centuries.

Like Shakespeare, a few have created enduring classics that continue to inspire the faithful to this day.

This column will look briefly at two, one from centuries past and one from our time.

One book that inspired me with its profound yet accessible ideas and simple love of God is Thomas à Kempis’ The Imitation of Christ.

Kempis (1380 to 1471) was a monk and priest from the town of Kempen, near modern day Dusseldorf in Germany.

He was sent to a school operated by the Brethren of the Common Life, an order of monks, in nearby Deventer, Holland.

He was so impressed by the sanctity and holiness of his teachers he joined the monastery of Mt. St. Agnes in Zwolle, Holland.

There he spent the rest of his life in prayer, meditation, servicing the spiritual needs of the community, copying the Bible and other works and in writing.

His most wellknown devotional classic has become, after the Bible, one of the most translated books in Christian literature.

Kempis was subprior of the monastery, responsible for the training of novices.

The devotional is clearly a summary of how novice monks needed to practice their holy calling.

Here is a brief taste of his spiritual advice: What good does it do, then, to debate about the trinity, if by a lack of humility you are displeasing to the trinity?

In truth, lofty words do not make a person holy and just, but a virtuous life makes one dear to God. I would much rather feel profound sorrow for my sins than be able to define the theological term for it.

If you knew the whole Bible by heart and the sayings of all the philosophers, what good would it all be without God’s love and grace?

Vanity of vanities and all is vanity, except to love God and to serve only him.

This is the highest wisdom: To see the world as it truly is, fallen and fleeting; to love the world not for its own sake, but for God’s; and to direct all our effort toward achieving the kingdom of heaven.

In my opinion, every Christian ought to read and meditate on this little book.

Aiden Wilson Tozer (1887 to 1963) was born into a poor family in rural Pennsylvania.

He accepted Christ as a teenager in Akron, Ohio and, though

he did not have the benefit of any formal education, including high school, Tozer went on to become one of the most influential preachers and writers of evangelical Christianity in the 20th century.

While he started as a Methodist, he soon became a preacher with the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church (started in New York City by Canadian A.B. Simpson).

He spent most of his career in Chicago at Southside Alliance Church, but finished his life’s work at Avenue Road Church in Toronto.

His prayer life was exemplary.

It was his habit to sprawl out face down in his study in the silent worship of God and pray for extended periods.

Tozer wrote more than 60 books, but the two most influential are The Pursuit of God (1948) and The Knowledge of the Holy (1961).

The Pursuit of God was written by Tozer during a long train trip from Chicago to Texas.

He wrote all night and when the train arrived at its destination he had a rough draft.

Tozer read deeply from the Christian

mystics of the past, a clear inspiration for Pursuit.

He writes: “Come near to the holy men and women of the past and you will soon feel the heat of their desire for God. “They mourned for Him, they prayed and wrestled and sought for him day and night, in season and out, and when they had found him the finding was all the sweeter for the long seeking . . . I want to deliberately encourage this mighty longing after God. “The stiff and wooden quality about our religious lives is a result of our lack of holy desire . . . Acute desire must be present or there will be no manifestation of Christ to his people. He waits to be wanted.”

Humping along the trail with paddles and fishing gear, I thought to myself, “I hope the fish are biting even half as much these mosquitos!”

I was part of a small group of outdoor enthusiasts portaging canoes from Lake Opeongo to tiny Minnow Lake in Ontario’s Algonquin Provincial Park, about to do something I’d never done before — if the mosquitos didn’t eat me alive, that is.

Algonquin Park is one of my favourite places in the world.

I’ve camped and canoed and hiked there on many occasions, dating back to my childhood.

The one thing I had never done there was go fishing and that was about to change.

We finally got to the small lake and started baiting the rods and getting the canoes ready to launch.

It was a beautiful sunny day, following on the heels of two days of rain, so I wouldn’t have to try as

Three of us piled into our canoe, a guide, myself and another fishing buddy, Darcy.

Unlike me, Darcy was an experienced fisherman, so our attempts at trying to land a brook trout or two looked promising.

We took turns trolling and spin casting, coasting along the shorelines trying to coax some nibbles from the trout.

Being out on the lake, away from the bush with a very light breeze, meant we wouldn’t have to play bait for any mosquitos.

Visions of battles with brookies danced through our heads.

Even if we didn’t catch any, we’d be able to tell fish tales about the ones that got away.

The park boasts more than 1,500 lakes and 1,200 kilometres of streams with as many as 54 recorded different species of fish.

The backcountry lakes are not fished heavily because of their remote nature and difficulty to access, while the lakes along Highway 60 — the band of asphalt that cuts through the southern portion of the park — are specially regulated to make sure they’re not overfished due to their ease of access.

It certainly seemed like we would not be contributing to any overfishing on that day.

There were four canoes in our group, but try as we might, only one or two of them got anything resembling a nibble.

Darcy and I were skunked.

But anyone who loves to spend time in the outdoors knows even if the fish are not biting, there are still many other ways to enjoy the experience, to take something away — even if it’s not a fish.
