A debate over arming city of Kamloops bylaw officers is going on the back burner until 2017. Corporate services and community safety director David Duckworth said the city wants to complete a review of the bylaw department’s priorities before it returns to the issue.

“There are too many variables to consider at this point until we complete a service level and priority review for the entire bylaw division,” Duckworth told KTW via email. “This review will look at many things including priorities, resources, et cetera. “If foot patrols, transient camps, et cetera, are still deemed a high priority, then the defensive tools will be considered further.”

Earlier this year, Duckworth told Kamloops city council officers had asked to carry pepper spray, batons and handcuffs — equipment used in Vernon and Kelowna, but otherwise

uncommon for B.C. bylaw services. Duckworth said officers’ duties have changed in recent years, putting them in more volatile situations. “We patrol riverbanks,

we take down homeless shelters, we deal with transient people, panhandlers in the downtown core,” he told council at the time. “Those people can be suffering from addictions issues, from mental-health issues, and a lot of them that do live on the streets have their own self-protection.” The services review will take six to eight months to complete, Duckworth said.

CRIME

Police targeting gangsters Eight people were arrested and 130 vehicles were checked as anti-gang police officers descended on Kamloops over the weekend in what the local detachment’s spokeswoman is calling a proactive measure. Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said officers from the Uniform Gang Enforcement Team were in the Tournament Capital to help stop criminal activity and prevent organized crime groups from further establishing a presence in the community. “The joint efforts over the weekend targeted those individuals participating in illegal activities and resulted in both enforcement and disruptive measures being taken,” she said. Shelkie said 23 residences were checked and gang officers conducted 15 curfew checks. She also said three vehicles were impounded. “The elimination of all organized criminal activity from the city of Kamloops remains a priority,” Shelkie said.
