or Kamloops’ poorest residents, even taking the bus can be too expensive, says Louise Richards.

That’s why she and other members of the Kamloops Poverty Reduction Strategy Committee are hoping to convince the city to offer more affordable options to residents in need.

When the committee, which includes representation from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the city of Kamloops, and non-profits including Richards’ Elizabeth Fry Society, surveyed social agencies in the city cost was among the top complaints they heard.

“Cost is always an issue for people in poverty,” said Richards, who notes income assistance in B.C. provides only $610 per month for living expenses, with $375 expected to go to shelter.

In a city like Kamloops, where rent that low is unlikely, even the cost of a bus pass can eat too far into a monthly budget, she said.

“If everyone’s using $475 of their $375 for rent that doesn’t leave you much money to do anything else, let alone take the bus.”

Richards said the committee’s suggesting the city look at models like those in place in

Cranbrook and Grand Prairie, Alta., where lowincome residents can apply for free monthly passes.

Both programs piggyback on the community’s affordable recreation programs, which offer discounts or credits for swimming, skating and other programs.

Kamloops already offers a similar recreation program, Affordable Recreation for Community Health (better known as ARCH).

Richards said using that program to offer free transit is one possible solution.

The committee also wants to explore ways to

make transit more affordable for everyone, up to and including universal free transit, Richards said.

Kamloops city council has talked about free transit as recently as April 2015, but found it would cost more than $3 million annually to extend the benefit to all residents.

Councillors instead chose to change the cost of a cash fare to $2 (an increase for seniors and students, but a decrease for other riders).

Richards said the committee got a warm reception when it shared its ideas with the city’s social planning council earlier this summer and will spend the fall conducting

more research to formalize its pitch, including cost estimates.

Beyond the price of bus passes, Richards said common complaints from low-income riders include scheduling and number of available routes.

“People who were working couldn’t get employment because as soon as the employer found out the person was relying on transit, they knew transit wouldn’t get there in time,” she said.

“Or there’s another scenario where if you’re working late at night and you can’t get a bus out to Westsyde you end up taking a cab, which eats up all of your earnings.”

A oil field consultant who failed to remit GST he collected for a decade and then absconded from his sentence hearing five years ago faces nearly $50,000 in fines and 90 days in jail.

James Kennedy pleaded guilty in 2010 for failure to remit $65,000 in GST, an offence under the Excise Tax Act. His sentencing was set for May 2011 but he did not show up. A warrant was issued and he was eventually arrested earlier this year at Vancouver Airport, returning from a job overseas.

The Crown argued for a 90-day jail sentence along with $49,000 in fines.

Kennedy faced a number of problems with Canada Revenue Agency. At one time, he owed $144,000 in income taxes.

The taxman seized his truck and boat and he has faced civil action. He also paid fines for failure to pay income tax.

But Kennedy, 58, complained he was unaware that he faced a sanction.

“I thought it was all sorted

out and done,” he told Kamloops provincial court judge Roy Dickey on Wednesday.

Dickey reserved judgment, likely for later in August.

Kennedy works extensively overseas, including in Libya and Vietnam in oil field and pipeline construction as a supervisor. His passport was seized when he was arrested in May. He told Dickey he needs to get back to work and has a potential offer in Kuwait. He said he supports a wife and daughter, who has Down syndrome, in Vietnam. Kennedy also claims to have lost $500,000 in a year.

‘I thought, there’s no way — this is going to be three weeks, tops’ When Brad Inman heard Donald Trump was running for president, he set out to get a hat and a bumper sticker ANDREA KLASSEN STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

hen reality TV star and real estate magnate Donald Trump announced his plans to run for president in June of 2015, Brad Inman had two thoughts.

“I thought, ‘There’s no way — this is going to be three weeks, tops,’” Inman said.

The second thought? He was going to need to get his hands on one of Trump’s signature Make America Great Again ball caps while he had a chance — it would make a ridiculous memento in a few months.

While snagging the hat wasn’t easy for someone with Canadian and Australian passports (at the time, it required a donation to the Trump campaign, which only takes money from U.S. citizens), Inman prevailed.

The Trump bumper sticker included in the package went on the back of his red Hyundai van, another reminder of what was sure to be a weird, brief moment in American history.

And then, Trump’s campaign began to pick up steam.

One year and several promises to ban Muslim immigrants and build a wall along the Mexican border later, Trump is the Republican party’s official nominee for the White House — and Inman’s bumper sticker is attracting some attention around Kamloops.

“There was a woman,

just now going up Columbia,” Inman told KTW earlier this week. “I passed by her and, as soon as I’m at the lights, there she is taking a picture of the bumper sticker.”

Over the past months, it’s become a common experience. If he has time to stop and talk to the picture takers, Inman often finds they’re in the process of making horrified posts on Facebook or other social media. Someone also keyed his van, though Inman said he isn’t sure if that’s related to the Trump sticker.

“It’s fine. I bought a used car for just such an emergency. It doesn’t bother me and no, I don’t regret it.”

Inman said most of the time, if he explains the sticker is a joke, people upset by the idea of a Kamloops Trump supporter will laugh along with him, but there have been a few times when the conversation’s swung the other way.

“There’s been a few uncomfortable guys that come up and go, ‘Hey, way to go buddy, we have to get the Muslims out of here.’

OTTAWA MUST ACT ON MARIJUANA ISSUE Sooke mom Kate Karassev began an online petition last week asking Sooke council to consider regulating medical marijuana dispensaries here.

Karassev’s concerns are well-founded.

The City of Victoria is moving toward regulating marijuana dispensaries that have popped up on city streets. There are 38 dispensaries known to operate in Victoria.

Karassev’s fear is that some — or many — of these dispensaries will move to Sooke. Since April, two marijuana operations have opened in Sooke and reportedly a third and fourth are on the way.

So far, council has not acted on regulating the business. The only regulation is the standard business licence bylaw.

One thing is clear: there won’t be any winners in the ongoing marijuana dispute until the federal government comes up with concrete answers on what the public is or is not allowed to access and who they’re allowed to get it from. We sympathize with people using marijuana as medicine for chronic issues.

Some say it’s the only relief they’ve found in years of trying different prescriptions or strategies to manage their pain or symptoms.

We understand that, for those people, the crackdown on dispensaries will drive them to find underground sources. In some ways, the unwillingness of the authorities to turn a blind eye to businesses selling controlled doses of the chemical in the form of tinctures, oils and consumables, actually supports the independent dealers and black market — the “real criminals,” some would call them.

On the other side of the coin, however, who gets to decide which laws the authorities should uphold? If a law is bad, we need to have the law changed, not complain that the authorities are upholding it.

The feds announced yesterday new rules that take effect later this month allowing private growing in medical marijuana cases. Perhaps now we can actually move forward in a productive manner instead of having everyone yelling at each other about whether it’s a waste of taxpayer dollars to enforce the law.

Witnessing marriage equality

S

ame-sex marriage has been legal in Canada for more than 10 years, but it wasn’t until last weekend I saw the weight of that decision in the flesh at a stunning ceremony overlooking Vancouver’s waterfront.

It was beautiful and, despite having only met the grooms hours earlier, I watched through tears as they shared their declaration of love.

That’s what I do at weddings.

Friends and family revelled in the happiness, sharing stories of two men who couldn’t be better suited for each other.

Proud parents welcomed new sons into their families.

We danced to Single Ladies and posed in the photo booth — mementos for the happy couple from their special day.

When Bill C-38 was passed by the House of Commons in 2005, I was barely in high school, naive and oblivious to the fact there were people fighting for marriage equality. I was probably vaguely aware that for decades laws had prohibited gay couples from making the same vows my parents did.

And, partly because Canada was on the forefront of legalizing same-sex marriage, I didn’t witness the homophobia of decades past.

I’m proud and happy to be part of a generation that knows no boundaries when it comes to love, that is shocked and outraged when people try to say otherwise.

TO NONE In June, after 49 people were killed and another 53 wounded at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orland, Fla., society rallied around actor and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda’s words: “Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside.”

Justin Trudeau last month became the first Canadian prime minister to march in a pride parade, first in Toronto and then in Vancouver.

Last year’s landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage was a proud moment — but also a reminder that, even in modern times, tradition seeps in. The decision was five votes to four.

Saturday’s newlyweds included part of this historical ruling in their ceremony, the final paragraph in the decision Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote confirming same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry.

The words echoed the final paragraph of a 1967 U.S. Supreme Court case that over-

turned laws banning interracial marriage.

Cue the tears: “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.”

It was a reminder we’ve come a long way and, in some places, the victory is fresh. In other places, the uphill battle is still unfathomable.

Even here at home, there are communities facing a similar plight. Last month, the provincial government passed amendments to its Human Rights Code to protect transgendered individuals from discrimination.

It specified protection for gender identity and gender expression, despite some politicians’ denial that gender is fluid.

I’d like to remind those people that, until just a quartercentury ago, homosexuality was treated as a mental illness and, until very recently, the wedding I attended on Saturday would have been prohibited in many American states.

Laws have been changed to create a more inclusive society and will continue to, so everyone can share the same freedom from prejudice two grooms shared with families and friends on a Saturday afternoon in Vancouver. jklymchuk@kamloopsthisweek.com Twitter: @jjklym

MINISTER OUT OF TOUCH ON HEALTH-CARE CRISIS Editor: (Re: ‘Health minister says teams are the future,’ July 15): I read MLA Terry Lake’s response to the published feedback on B.C.’s health-care crisis and was appalled at how out of touch and cold he appears in that response.

To me, it sounds like this concept of integrated health teams is a done deal, that British Columbians should just accept that fact and quit whining about it.

I disagree. Now is the time to speak up, to question, to participate in forums, to roar if necessary and to demand our politicians do not reduce our

ready access to continuity of care.

I read nothing in his letter about understanding the frustrations of patients (seniors, children, handicapped and, in fact, all patients without a family doctor) who cannot phone for an appointment and must cope with the stress of getting to the clinic early enough to have a hope of being seen that day, waiting outside in the inclement weather for the clinic to open and waiting some more in a crowded room with other patients, risking exposure to cold, flu or whatever.

I read also read Dr. Webster’s letter (‘Curing what ails health care —

with some ideas,’ July 14) and felt he offered some very positive suggestions that could and should be discussed further.

Our health-care system didn’t deteriorate overnight, so there will be no quick fix, regardless of the health-team approach.

We will have some growing pains in finding a workable solution that protects our health and our dignity.

Seniors can least cope with the disruption in service and the stress it causes.

I would like to see the cap on general practitioners (GP) lifted or, at least, raised to 75 patients per day.

Not every GP will seek that patient load, but treating patients at a GP office is more cost-effective than having those patients seek non-emergency care at the ER. There is a lot of wasted time and assets within our medical system.

Contracting out the meal-preparation, laundry services and housekeeping in our hospitals was done to save money.

But think back 20 years — our hospitals were much cleaner and more efficient then.

The aging population and the increased demand for health care is not the only reason we are in crisis.

I believe overhauling

our health system begins with having a clear idea of what aspects British Columbians are willing to give up or compromise on and what they deem as essential.

Then comes the harder choices on affordability.

Take politics out of the equation and let our doctors and nurses do their jobs.

Finally, I would like to thank all our hard-working doctors and nurses, technicians and support staff.

I have met some wonderful, dedicated and compassionate care givers in my 61 years.

STOP ARGUING RELIGION CAUSES VIOLENCE Editor: (Re: ‘Rational Thoughts: Send all gods to the scrap heap of history,’ July 20): Please just stop with the “religion causes violence” argument.

It is so tired.

You are very much aware that for every religious excuse for violence there are 50 non-religious excuses: money, power, mental illness, jealousy, lust, etc.

In addition, I am sure you are aware that supposed religious violence is largely a masquerade for non-religious motives.

We might even agree that, simply put, selfishness — group or individual — is the seed of all violence (with the occasional mental illness sprinkled in).

What we would not agree upon is the way to discourage this aggression.

I suspect you would argue for the subsequent dismantling of religion to unmask the selfishness of “righteous religious aggression,” exposing it to the light of human scrutiny.

However, consider that selflessness, in contrast, is something all

religions (at least of which I am aware) teach as a fundamental doctrine and something modeled by the greatest voices for peace and human rights in the past century, including the varied religious Shirin Ebadi, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Aung San Suu Kyi, Desmond Tutu — I could go on.

Bill, instead of imagining a world with less religion, imagine a world where individual accountability to an enlightened entity, empathy, “turn the other cheek” and “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” — in

other words compassionate religion — were planted and rooted in every soul on Earth. That, in my mind, would be a way to curb violence worth advocating — even by you.

P.S. “Ample verses in the Quran and in the Bible that advocate violence against the gay, lesbian and transgendered community.” I don’t know lots about the Quran but, as a Christian, I would love to see those ample verses advocating violence against LGBT in the Bible.

A man accused of beating a teen and putting him in a coma is scheduled to appear in court again next month to make a plea on a charge of attempted murder.

Kristopher Teichrieb, 39, is charged with attempted murder in connection to the June 19 assault of Jessie Simpson, 18.

Teichrieb is accused of beating Simpson with a baseball bat after finding the teen on or near his property. Simpson’s friends and family have said he was celebrating high school graduation with classmates on the night of June 18 and may have been trying to find a group of friends when he was beaten.

Teichrieb’s lawyer, Jeremy Jensen, said his client is scheduled to enter his plea Sept. 15. He was denied bail and remains in custody.

Simpson has been on life support since the incident.

The naloxone take-home program run by Interior Health Authority has expanded to 70 sites including all emergency departments, public-health centres, mental-health and substance-use offices.

In Kamloops, they are available at Ask Wellness, 433 Tranquille Rd., the Lansdowne Health Centre, 450 Lansdowne St., and the King Street Clinic, 126 King St., as well as at Royal Inland Hospital’s ER. At the ER, they are offered to patients being treated for an opioid overdose — naloxone can reverse those kinds of drug reactions — while at the other locations, they are available for anyone at risk of an opioid overdose.

Opioid drugs include oxycodone, morphine, heroin, fentanyl and others.

Pharmacies can also issue naloxone kits to anyone without a prescription.

“The program not only gives those at risk free naloxone kits, it also provides an opportunity to offer information on how to prevent an overdose from

occurring in the first place by educating clients about factors that can increase the risk of overdose,” said Dr. Silvina Mema, IHA’s Medical Health Officer.

“For example, one of the things we tell people is that if they haven’t used a drug for a while their tolerance or response to that drug can change and that puts them at greater risk of an overdose.”

In addition to making naloxone kits more accessible, the Take Home Naloxone program also provides training on how to prevent, recognize and respond to an overdose situation.

The training offers practical overdose-prevention tips such as always starting with a small amount of the drug, avoid mixing different drugs, and avoid using alone.

Crucial life-saving steps including recognizing the signs of an overdose, putting someone in the recovery position, how to perform rescue breathing and administering naloxone, as well as the importance of getting emergency medical help as soon as possible, are also covered.

A labourer who collected employment insurance while making undeclared income at the same time will pay $7,000 in fines in addition to paying back more than $9,000 in benefits.

Donald Connelly pleaded guilty yesterday to three counts of underreporting his income and four counts of

making false representation on employment insurance documents.

Charges were made under the Employment Insurance Act. In total, he collected about $9,300 in benefits, from underreporting income during pay periods in 2012 and 2013 while working as a labourer at Kamloops Wire Products.

“It’s fraud of the public purse,” said federal Crown prosecutor Anthony Varesi.

Over the period from June 2012 to August the next year, Connelly earned more than $27,000 at his job, which was topped up by $9,300 in employment insurance benefits he was not due.

Connelly has no criminal record but has been hit with administrative penalties in the past for dealings with employment insurance.

“It just seemed easy,” he told provincial court Judge Chris

Cleaveley. “I did it and regret it.”

Noting Connelly must also pay back overpayments on his limited income, Cleaveley declined to go with the maximum fine suggested by the Crown of $14,000, instead cutting it in half to $7,000.

“It sends a strong message to those individuals who might think it’s an easy way to defraud taxpayers,” Cleaveley said.

A B.C. Supreme Court justice called testimony of a floor layer who denied breaking into a North Shore home and stealing firearms “incredible.”

Justice Elliott Myers found Jason Teskey guilty of break and enter and theft of firearms following a three-day trial.

The conviction was based solely on four fingerprints found on duct tape placed on a window in order to gain entry to the Valdes Drive home in February 2014.

The homeowner returned from vacation to find the house ransacked and taps turned on to flood the home. About $12,000 worth of goods was missing.

Teskey testified he gave a former employee and roommate six strips of duct tape so he could fix a broken truck window.

“Mr Teskey’s evidence is so incredible it doesn’t leave me with a reasonable doubt,” Elliott said.

Teskey testified he only knew his former employee and tenant’s name as “Scott” and made no attempt to find him following the charges.

Elliott also said there is no valid reason why Teskey would not have simply given him a roll of duct tape, rather than ripping off strips.

The Crown also put to Teskey during cross-examination a post on his Facebook wall made in the days before the break-in, saying “duct tape can’t fix stupid but it can muffle the sound.”

“I don’t believe Mr. Teskey’s evidence,” Myers said.

“It’s hard to accept he wouldn’t give Scott a roll of duct tape.”

A sentencing hearing was set for late Thursday afternoon, after KTW’s press deadline.

An informal poll conducted

by MP Cathy McLeod’s office mirrors a countrywide survey that found Canadians want a referendum on electoral change, the Conservative politician said yesterday.

McLeod’s office issued a statement declaring 77 per cent of about 800 local residents who returned a survey indicated they want a referendum on changing the country’s current first-pastthe-post electoral system.

An Ipsos-Reid poll conducted in May found 73 per cent of people agreed the Liberal government should not make electoral change without a national referendum.

The Liberals were elected on a platform that promised the October election last year would be the last under the current system. Now the Liberals are pushing for change, including a preferential ballot system that critics say favours the party.

Under a preferential ballot, voters rank choices for local MP. That favours a centrist party like the Liberals, which is more likely to be a second-choice among voters.

“I’m glad to see residents in our riding are discussing the issue,” McLeod said in her statement. “However, I’m concerned Liberals are trying to rig the process.”

A non-partisan local group has been formed in Kamloops to discuss electoral reform, but McLeod noted it is headed by former Liberal candidate.

Bait car culprit identified due to distinctive tattoos A first-time offender picked the wrong car to make what seemed like an easy grab of sunglasses and cigarettes.

Tyler Norman, 34, pleaded guilty this week to a single count of theft under $5,000 after he was recorded stealing items from an RCMP bait car in June.

Bait cars are equipped with extensive camera systems.

Prosecutor Will Burrows said a Mountie was able to identify Norman by notable tattoos, particularly on his leg and arms.

He was later arrested.

Provincial court judge Stella Frame gave Norman a suspended sentence with one-year probation, including an evening curfew.

Norman told Frame he was addicted to opiates when he stole the items from the bait car.

He is now on a suboxone program.

The Fort McMurray resident has no criminal record.

“I’m free of drugs again,” Norman told Frame.

“I was homeless and going through a hard time in my life.”

HEALTH CANADA SETS RULES FOR PATIENTS WANTING TO GROW OWN POT THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA — Revamped federal rules to allow Canadians to grow their own medical marijuana are likely to form part of the government’s overall plan for legalization of the drug, the federal justice minister says.

The new rules will allow people who have been authorized by their doctor to use medicinal cannabis to grow a limited amount of marijuana for their personal use or designate someone else to grow it for them.

Those rules will be taken into account by a federal task force struck to craft recommendations on how to legalize recreational marijuana use, Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould said.

Rules and regulations around legalization are to be unveiled next spring.

“The regulations that were spoken today form part of the considerations that our task group on marijuana

Under the new rules unveiled yesterday by Health Canada, authorized patients will be able to grow a specific number of plants based on their prescriptions and whether they are growing the plants indoors or outdoors.

Indoors, patients will be able to grow five plants per gram of dried product and two plants per gram outdoors.

The new rules come into effect on Aug. 24.

The regulations are a response to a Federal Court decision earlier this year that found the

ban on patients growing medical marijuana to be a violation of their constitutional rights.

The court gave the federal government six months to come up with a new regulations that would let patients grown their own cannabis for personal use.

Health Canada officials told reporters the government believes the new regulations provide reasonable access for patients to medical marijuana and address the issues raised in the court decision.

They also repeatedly said dispensaries and compassion clubs that hand out marijuana are considered illegal operations and the only place to purchase medical marijuana is through one of the 34 licensed suppliers in Canada who serve some 70,000 clients.

Those licensed suppliers will, under the new rules, be a legal

source for marijuana plants and seeds.

The parent company for one of the country’s best-known marijuana producers said the new rules are good news for those who want to grow at home, but the government failed to address problems that existed under the old rules: elevated diversion risks, abuse of plant limits and the inability of law enforcement to know legal from illegal cannabis.

The Canadian Pharmacists Association said the government missed a chance to improve patient safety by not having its members be the sole dispensers of medical marijuana.

In a statement, the association said the Liberals should put their members at the centre of a new regime for legal access to recreational marijuana to “limit the emergence of a grey market and protect the medical system against abuse by recreational users.’’

TORONTO — A notorious video featuring late Toronto mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine has been made public.

The decision came during a court proceeding in a case involving Ford’s friend and driver Alexander (Sandro) Lisi.

Lisi had faced the charge in relation to efforts made to retrieve the infamous video of the controversial Ford apparently smoking crack cocaine in May 2013.

hours, they felt they had found their man: Aaron Driver, 24, a known terrorist sympathizer living in the southwestern Ontario town of Strathroy, under court-imposed conditions.

The tip included a screen shot of a video of Driver and a warning he was planning to detonate a homemade explosive device in an urban centre during morning or afternoon rush hour, said RCMP deputy commissioner Mike Cabana.

“It was a race against time,’’ Cabana told a news conference yesterday in Ottawa.

“We had no other information, other than the existence of a threat that could impact Canadians.’’

The warning was Canada-wide and made no mention of a specific city, said RCMP assistant commissioner Jennifer Strachan, who praised investigators for identifying Driver quickly enough to prevent him from carrying out the attack.

house into the back seat of a waiting taxi, where an improvised explosive device suddenly detonated, injuring the cab driver.

Driver himself was killed either by the explosion or police gunfire, Strachan said.

“If he had gotten out of that residence before we got there, the scenario would have ended a lot differently.’’

In the video, aired during the news conference, a masked Driver addresses the camera directly as he rails against western “enemies of Islam’’ and warns the only solution would be the “spilling of your blood.’’

Cabana also the ongoing investigation has led police to a “secondary location’’ in the city of London, not far from Strathroy, where Driver had been living with his sister.

Driver was under a court order not to associate with any terrorist organization, among other restrictions.

Transit agencies in Toronto say they warned of a security threat before Wednesday’s deadly confrontation, as were National Defence personnel in Ottawa.

The RCMP, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and other police and security agencies were also involved in the operation.

Yesterday morning, a spokesman for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) said the agency was made aware of a terror threat investigation early the previous day, but noted it had no specifics attached.

Brad Ross said as a precaution, a “vigilance notice’’ was issued to staff encouraging them to say something if they saw something of concern.

He said such notices are commonly issued after security incidents around the world or if the TTC is advised of threats closer to home.

He added the information the TTC was given Wednesday was “very general about a credible threat that was being investigated by police but it had no location, it didn’t even say a city as far as I know.’’

A spokeswoman for Metrolinx, the Ontario government agency which runs the Greater Toronto Area’s regional transit lines, said it was also advised of a security threat.

Anne Marie Aikins said the agency raised its level of vigilance and worked closely with national, provincial and local forces in response.

In tiny Strathroy, a neighbour of Driver’s said he couldn’t recall ever seeing the man around town.

But he said Wednesday’s incident — and the discovery a terror suspect lived only a stone’s throw away — hit “a little too close to home.’’

“For me, having two kids and my wife and a possible terrorist . . . sympathizer down the street, it’s kind of . . . it’s a little crazy.’’

Last year, federal authorities were so suspicious Driver might have ties to a terrorist group he bounced in and out of jails and courtrooms for months, all without actual charges ever being laid — and he had no criminal record at the time.

In June 2015, Driver was first picked up in Winnipeg.

Published reports at the time suggested Driver posted messages on social media praising terrorist activities, including the attack on Parliament Hill in October 2014 by Michael Zehaf Bibeau.

Amarnath Amarasingam, a postdoctoral fellow at Dalhousie University who studies radicalization and terrorism, maintained in 2015 Driver posted for several months on social media about disliking Canada and about a desire to move.

Mounties applied for a peace bond that could impose limits on Driver’s activities, alleging in provincial court documents that investigators believed he might help with terrorist group activities.

When Driver was released later that month, he was ordered to comply with 18 different conditions, including wearing a GPS tracking device.

“I was just thinking I need to put everything in front of the ball because in the game before I let two ground balls just like that get by me,” said Mitchell, the peewee AAA Kamloops Riverdogs’ first-baseman.

“I would have felt so bad to take it away from him.”

Mitchell avoided his very own Bill Buckner moment, snagged the grounder, tagged first base — and the party was on.

“It was just a really great atmosphere knowing we had just won the provincial championship and I had just thrown a nohitter, just having my teammates all around celebrating with me,” said Tyrelle, who finished the tournament with two wins, a save and a no-hitter.

“I started walking over to first base and hugged my firstbaseman because during that game he had about five ground balls

hit really hard at him.

He just picked them up and tagged the base every time.”

The fairytale ending to the B.C. Minor Baseball Championship in Duncan last weekend marked the Riverdogs’ second provincial championship of the season, with the Kamloops squad having won the peewee AAA Baseball BC championship on home soil on July 31.

Next up for the 13-and-under Riverdogs, thanks to their win in the Tournament Capital, is a trip to the Baseball Canada Nationals, which will be held in London, Ont., from Aug. 25 to Aug. 28.

Tyrelle and Mitchell — more on him later — will receive deserved praise for what they accomplished on the weekend, but coach Reine English was quick to make one thing clear: This dream season is all about team.

He said it’s about 11 players and friends who set high goals every time they trot onto the diamond and have the talent to reach them.

The provincial final’s hero echoed his manager’s sentiments.

“We don’t have a weak link on our team,” Tyrelle said. “Everybody can hit. Everybody can pitch. Everybody can play a position. We’re strong as a team.”

Kamloops posted a 3-1 record in roundrobin play on the weekend, with wins over Ladner, Cowichan Valley and Victoria, its only loss coming against Burnaby.

Look no further for proof of all-around contribution than the Dogs’ miraculous comeback in a semifinal contest against Richmond.

The Lower Mainland squad carried a 6-2 lead over Kamloops into the seventh and final inning, having pulled ahead on the back of a three-run dinger in the sixth. The bottom of the Kamloops order was due up.

Some parents, players and coaches, if they are being honest with themselves, might have thought that was it, a great run that was going to fall just short.

Mitchell finished the tournament with nine home runs in six games — including one in each game, four against Victoria and the heroic bomb in the final.

Tyrelle’s no-hitter was kept alive by the same strong defence that buoyed Kamloops throughout the season and at both provincial championships.

He knew he had something special going against Aldergrove in the title tilt after pitching two perfect innings — three up, three down — and had to refocus after plunking a batter.

“It’s something my dad told me when I started pitching,” Tyrelle said. “You start the game off, you have a perfect game. You walk somebody, you have a no hitter. If somebody gets a hit, then you need to go win the game. I work off whatever I have going.”

CRIMES OF THE WEEK THIEF CAUGHT ON CAMERA During the day on Monday, July 18th, a lone male had entered the Tournament Capital Centre and went into the men’s change room, then stole various items from the personal lockers. Once the staff were made aware of the thefts, they reviewed the security videos.

The male was caught on surveillance camera leaving the facility, pulling a grey and black hockey style bag that appeared to have wheels on it. The male is described as Caucasian, late 20’s, thin build, with dark hair and a dark beard, he was wearing a light blue tank top.

EXPENSIVE BIKE STOLEN On Monday, August 8th an expensive bike value over $10,000 was taken from a vehicle that had been parked over night at a Motel in Valleyview. The owner last saw the bike just before 7:30 am and left the Motel for only one hour.

During the absence, someone took the bike. These thieves knew what they were doing as the lock that secured the bike to the vehicle was of good quality. Although

These two thieves broke into a private liquor store in Valleyview on Thursday, July 14th at 4:05 am. These two smashed out the front with a rock to gain entry into the business, the suspects each had a black backpack. Once inside, the suspects loaded a number of liquor bottles into the backpacks before they left the store. Both males tried to cover their faces with bandanas but still most of their faces are clearly visible.

His father, Ray Chadwick, knows a thing or two about baseball. He is a former MLB pitcher and longtime coach, having managed the TRU WolfPack and Kamloops Sun Devils for more than a decade.

Ray is also familiar with white-knuckling it in the stands. His daughter, Sydney Leroux, won an Olympic gold medal with the U.S. national soccer team in 2012.

Being a bystander parent never gets easier and the nerves ramped up with every inning that passed, Tyrelle still clinging to a no-hitter.

“It was wrenching,” said Ray, who watched alongside Mitchell’s dad, the two parents mentioning nothing of the no-hitter, so as not to jinx it.

Tyrelle did his best to think only of the next pitch, but that became tougher with each trip back to the dugout.

“When you’re off the field sitting on the bench, it’s a little bit harder to do because you’re not really doing as much,” said Tyrelle, who finished with nine strikeouts and four hit batters, the only Aldergrove baserunners of the game.

Heading into the sixth inning, Tyrelle knew he had 14 pitches left to secure the 26th out of the game. If he could reach that point, he would have the opportunity to retire the next batter in as many pitches as it took.

“That’s funny. We never communicate pitch counts with our pitchers,” English said.

“We want them to concentrate on the task at hand. I didn’t know he knew what he was at.”

Nice plays on hardhit ground balls to first and second helped Tyrelle get out of the sixth inning in six pitches, leaving eight for the seventh inning.

He used seven pitches to oust the first two batters in the seventh inning and reached 26 outs with one pitch to spare.

Perhaps a kick in the pants was needed.

The midget AA Kamloops Riverdogs fell short of the playoffs at the B.C. Minor Baseball Championship in Prince George on the weekend, failing to repeat their goldmedal performance at the Baseball BC Championship in the Tournament Capital on July 31.

“The motivation level was a little bit low and I think they were riding that high from the weekend before,” said head coach Jason LaBonte, whose team had already qualified for the Western Canadian Championship on the back of its provincial championship victory on home soil.

“We just played poorly, there were lots of errors and we were missing about a third of our starting lineup.”

The vacationing players returned home in time to catch a charter bus to St. Albert, host city to the midget AA Westerns, which run from today to Sunday.

LaBonte doesn’t know much about the competition — the host St. Albert Cardinals, Oak River Bearcats, North Battleford Beavers and Lacombe Dodgers — and that’s just fine by him.

Local winners at Sunshine The Sunshine Open was held at the Kamloops Tennis Centre on the weekend with about 80 players from across the province in attendance.

In the men’s division, James Nering of Prince George won the singles A title, Jim Condon and Kristian Killand of Prince George claimed the doubles A crown, Peter Dosanjh and Amar Khunguira of Merritt were victorious in B doubles and Sahil Bansi of Merritt beat Eduardo Nunez of Kamloops to secure the singles B championship.

On the women’s side, Susie Walker downed Alyson Boone of Kamloops to win the singles A tournament, Kristina Lidster and Meryl Ogden of Kamloops won the A doubles, and Sharon Cadieux and Terry Mindel of Kamloops won the B doubles.

Ogden and Al Lincoln of Kamloops claimed the mixed doubles A title. Doug Goldade and Kristina Lidster won the mixed doubles B division.

Breathing fire on the water

The third annual Kamloops Dragon Boat Festival was held last weekend at Riverside Park in conjunction with Daybreak Rotary Ribfest and Hot Night in the City.

It doubled in size compared to the previous two years, bringing in about 650 participants on 32 teams from across the province.

Kamloops was represented by five teams — Kamloops Dragon Boat Club’s Extreme Currents and Extreme Curves, the Kamloops Interior Dragons (KIDS) women’s and mixed teams and the Spirit Warriors, a team comprised of breast cancer survivors.

Kelowna’s Rogue Dragons and DragonFire took the men’s and women’s gold medal races, respectively.

The KIDS mixed team had an excellent day, winning a silver medal in the mixed grand final.

Whitecaps running out of time

Patrick Roy has resigned as head coach and vicepresident of hockey operations of the Colorado Avalanche. Roy announced his decision in a statement, saying his vision for the team was not aligned with the Avalanche’s. The Hall of Fame goaltender won two Stanley Cups as a player with Colorado in 1996 and 2001. He became the Avalanche’s head coach and VP of hockey operations in May 2013. Roy won the Jack Adams award as the NHL’s top coach in his inaugural season.

VANCOUVER — The finish line is in sight but the Vancouver Whitecaps have some hills to climb to claim a spot in Major League Soccer’s playoffs.

The Whitecaps hope to gain some ground in the race for the post-season when they play the San Jose Earthquakes tonight at BC Place Stadium.

With 10 games remaining, the Whitecaps (8-10-6) enter the weekend seventh in the Western Conference with 30 points. They trail the Portland Timbers by two points for the sixth and final playoff spot in the West. The Earthquakes (6-6-10), who are 0-5-6 on the road this season, are eighth in the West, just two points behind the Whitecaps, and also hope to move up the ladder. Four points separate Vancouver from fifth place Sporting Kansas City.

“We knew it was going to be tight all along, even from the first game of the season,’’ Vancouver head coach Carl Robinson said. “We are in a position at the moment not where we would like to be, but we have to deal with it.

“It’s probably a fair position on how we performed in the first 24 games. It’s a challenge for us. It’s a great challenge to look forward to. There’s no point of being afraid.’’

Over the last three years, it has taken 50 or 51 points to claim a playoff spot. In that scenario, Vancouver needs 20 points in their final matches. Midfielder Andrew Jacobson agreed that’s a tall order, but not impossible.

“We’re in the thick of it,’’ he said. “We have 10 games left.

“What we are going to do is go out and try and collect as many points as possible.’’

Back in May, the Whitecaps were feeling good about themselves after putting together a three-game win streak.

In the 11 games since, Vancouver has managed just two victories and collected nine points in total.

“I don’t panic,’’ said Robinson. “I think we need to be better. I have said that across the board for the first 20-odd games of the season.

“We have to deal with it. My job as a coach is to fill them with confidence. There is no point taking a step back and getting scared. We have to meet this challenge head on.

There are times this season Robinson must have felt like the captain of a ship taking on water.

The Whitecaps are having trouble at both ends of the field. The team hasn’t scored a goal in three MLS matches, all on the road. Vancouver has also allowed two goals in each of five of the last seven games. On the season, the Whitecaps have given up 39 goals, the most of any team in the West.

The Earthquakes, who have played two less games than Vancouver, are riding a season-high, four-game unbeaten streak (1-03). They are also 0-1-3 in their last four road games.

“All we do every week is focus on ourselves. If we focus on ourselves and what we do . . . and cut out the individual errors that have been costing us, we have a good chance of winning the game,” Robinson said.

Canada’s women’s basketball team overcame a sluggish performance to beat Senegal 68-58, clinching a spot in the quarter-finals and winning three games for the first time in Olympic history.

“It’s a good thing, we always were kind of those underdogs,” said Kia Nurse, a 20-year-old from Hamilton.

“Well [the veterans] were.

They were in that position first and they told us about that. They have explained to us that now we have targets on our backs in a different way.

“People are not looking past us, people are not happy to play us sometimes, when they see us in their pool play. That’s exciting, that’s a position you want to be in. That’s just what our vets have done for us.”

Nurse scored 14 points, while Tamara Tatham added 13 points and eight rebounds to top the Canadians, who remain tied with the United States at the top of their group with identical 3-0 records.

The Canadians have to approach the mighty Americans, said Nurse, with the “mentality that you can win the game. There’s no other way to go into it.”

“Most of the time the game is won before you walk into the gym because they have that USA jersey on,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of experience with that, and you learn it’s not about the jersey you’ve got. If you play a good game anybody can win any day.”

Dr. Muriel A. Whitaker On Friday, August 5, 2016 Dr. Muriel A. Whitaker of Edmonton passed away at the age of 93 years.

Born on June 14, 1923 in Kamloops, BC, Muriel spent her early years as a teacher and Resort owner at Lac Le Jeune, BC. She earned a BA in English from the University of British Columbia, an MA from the University of Toronto, and completed a PhD in English from UBC while raising her five children.

Sadly we announce the passing of Roberta Ellen Hartman (nee Harrison) born on July 16, 1945 in Kamloops, BC.

On July 25, 2016 Bryan passed away on August 5 entered into rest 2015 inafter a brief illness at Kamloops, BC at thethe ageage of of 88 at Kamloops, 29 years.

In 1969 Muriel moved to Edmonton to take a position in the English Department at the University of Alberta. She became an internationallyknown scholar specializing in Medieval Literature, Arthurian Literature and Art and Children’s Literature. During her illustrious career she traveled extensively in Britain and Europe compiling information for her many academic publications. She was also the editor of several volumes of Canadian short stories. Although she retired in 1990, she continued to write, publish and also to teach on an informal basis until her death.

Muriel maintained a summer cottage at Lac Le Jeune, BC and took pride in never having missed a summer visit from the time she was two weeks old.

Muriel is mourned by her daughters Andrea (Don Fance) Easton of Blind Bay, BC and Mary Ellen Binder of Inuvik, NWT, her sons John (Kyung) Whitaker of Richmond, BC and Peter (Petr Simon) Whitaker of Royston, England, grandchildren Adam, Bernadette, Kristian, Ian and Karen, sisters Mary (Dick) Herman and Daisy McColl, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her daughter Allison Whitaker and her brothers Bill, Jim and Bud McDiarmid.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 15, 2016 at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 11111 - 57 Avenue, Edmonton .

t was supposed to be a one-off, just a brief foray into the iconic music of The Band.

“It took off,” said Ron Rault, long-time member of Front Porch Roots Revue (FPRR). “We brought others together from across the country, guys mostly from B.C. and Alberta but some from the east, too, and we thought it would be a one-off but it wasn’t.

“It turned out to be so much fun we wanted to keep going.”

FPRR is bringing its The Last Waltz Tribute to this month’s Salmon Arm Roots and Blues festival and, as in its creation, plenty of other performers booked for the event want to join in the tribute performance.

Peter North, festival artistic director and producer of FPRR’s recent CD, said Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett of Little Feat want to join in for some Band classics — Long Black Veil and The Weight. The Brothers

Breaking Away by Patrick O’Sullivan explores an NHL player’s childhood abuse.

Author and TRU lecturer Mervyn Nicholson gave it a read and reviewed the book.

Landreth are adding four of their own covers to the workshop, including The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Whitehorse will be doing the songs Neil Young performed during the concert that became The Last Waltz documentary and recording.

Rault said the FPRR membership roster has changed through the years but the four core members — Rault on bass and vocals, Thom Moon on drums, Dave (Crawdad) Cantera on harmonica and vocals and Gord Matthews on lead guitar, mandolin and backing vocals — will anchor the Sunday afternoon show at the barn stage on the festival grounds. It’s scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. and run for almost two hours.

Matthews spent a decade as lead guitarist in country singer Ian Tyson’s acoustic trio. He was an original member of K.D. Lang’s Reclines before joining Tyson.

David Rea and Rault played bass with John Lee Hooker on the road, Louisiana Red in the studio and wrote the Power Blues hit Jump Up. Rault grew up surrounded by music and last year marked 50 years of singing, performing and writing.

He said even as a kid, whenever family got together — sometimes including aunts, uncles, cousins and others — “we’d all sing.”

He and his brother performed in bands and still get together several times a year to share their love of music, Rault said.

He said The Band’s music inspired his own songwriting, not that he could achieve the kind of lyrics Robbie Robertson or Levon Helm created but by “scurrying off to find hillbilly music, blues, jazz, all kinds of music.”

His favourite song right now from The Band’s discography is Acadian Driftwood, the story of the expulsion of the Acadians

from what is now the Maritimes and most of Main during the French and Indian War of 1754 to 1763.

With a Scottish-French heritage, Rault said the song is “the story of my family too,” not so much in the reality of the expulsion but in the French migration across Canada.

“It touched a nerve in me,” he said.

“The story is mystic. When you start singing it you realize ‘I’m right in the middle of it’.”

After the Aug. 19 to Aug. 21 festival ends, FPRR is heading west to Kamloops for a Music in the Park gig. Raul said that set will basically be the dozen songs on its selftitled recent CD — “but we may throw some of The Band songs in, too.”

Music in the Park is at the Rotary Bandshell in Riverside Park. The music starts there at 7 p.m.

artin Harley remembers his first performance.

His dentist suggested the 16-year-old come and play a couple of blues songs for the people there.

“It was predictably terrifying and probably sounded terrible,” the Welsh slide guitarist said, “but it gave me something to work with and a taste for live music.”

While his career may have had an understated start, since then Roots Magazine has called him a life guitar master, he’s performed often at the legendary Glastonbury Festival, opened for Bruce Hornsby and Iron and Wine and toured throughout Europe

and North America.

But he’s never made it to Canada — until now.

“I’ve heard great things about Salmon Arm [Roots and Blues Festival] and I’m excited to meet the other musicians that are performing there . . . . I’m intrigued to see what magic the workshops produce.”

In addition to his solo concert on the blues stage on Aug. 19 — it starts just after 5 p.m. — Harley will be part of two workshops, Cafe a Go-Go on the blues stage on Aug. 20, a session led by David Gogo and including Steve Kozak and Daniel Kimbro and on Aug. 21 for From Gravestones to Touchstones at the shade stage, led by Brent Partkin and Paul Pigat and including Rob Becker Jesse Cahill and Kimbro.

Harley said “great music and people watching have always had a strong pull on me. Storytellers, security guards, barflies and old ladies at the bus stop have plenty to say about life and love.

“I’m pretty obsessed with the old American blues recordings of R.L Burnside, Robert Johnson, Howling Wolf and Mississippi Fred McDowell. They’re full of magic and suggestion. The English coffee shop guitar players like Davey Graham and Bert Jansch mixed American folk music with eastern and traditional British folk influences in a brilliant way. I love the fusion of those sounds.”

Of all his influences, he said, given the chance to share a stage with any one performer, it would have been Blind

Willie Johnson.

“He seems to have the fastest route between the heart and the fingers or voice,” Harley said.

“He was an emotional, elemental player whose music is dark and visceral.

Harley has worked with Kimbro before. His last album was just the two of them in a Nashville studio, playing for hours and creating Live at Southern Ground. In 2012, the pair recorded Mojo Fix. He said songwriting starts pretty basically for him.

“I boil the kettle, stare out of the window and sit down with the guitar if I’m at home.

“Quite often, I write when I’m travelling or driving. I dictate notes into my phone and then gather those ideas together later when I have a guitar at hand.”

Now in her 40s, the Woodstock, N.Y., native is no stranger to the stage, having started singing in bands at age 14. She said every musician decides whether or not to pursue the career.

Helm’s time came in her mid 20s when her dad, Grammy-award winning drummer Levon Helm, took her on the road.

“My family’s influence, it influenced me in that I think I was more afraid of it, of committing to it as a career because I knew too clearly how difficult it can be,” Helm said. “He saw it in me before I could really see it. He dragged me on the road and that was really a turning point for me and that’s when I knew I was going to do it.”

When Helm arrives in Salmon Arm later this month, she’ll have her two sons in tow. It has been more than three years since she toured in B.C. as a guest singer for Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. She’s making her way up the Pacific Northwest, but began her tour at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival.

It was there Helm met Canadian singer Sam Martin and her band Delta Sugar, who will join her on stage for a gospel workshop at The Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival.

“We have big plans, big plans for our collaboration,” Helm said. “It’s always really exciting to meet other musicians and collaborate and exchange ideas and stories and laughs and it feel like you are creating this larger community of your peers.”

Whether the song is a familiar old standard or a traditional hit, Helm said, bringing musicians together for an off-the-cuff rendition inspires new ideas. Collaboration has always been a big part of her career since, for most of her time on stage, she’s performed in bands — first with her dad, then with the alt-country collective Ollabelle.

It wasn’t until last year Helm made her solo debut with Didn’t It Rain. It has meant more vulnerable moments on stage.

“Really, singing the lead on two hours of music and singing those stories is a very, very different thing than stepping to the microphone, singing a couple lead songs and then pulling back and really tuning into the vibrational thing of singing background vocals, which I love to do as well,” she said.

“It’s required a much different intention on my part and I think I’ve kind of learned as I’m going.”

Helm’s set will draw from her record and include a handful of covers.

“It’s a very danceable set with a couple moments to catch your breath,” she said.

he Provincial Winter Fair Society would like to thank the community for their overwhelming support, and confirm that our fair will be held September 23-26th, 2016 at the North Thompson Agriplex in Barriere, BC. Our fair is well on its way to being a successful celebration of 4-H youth and local agriculture. The Provincial Winter Fair Society is a group of volunteers determined to host a great fair in a transparent, community minded manner. The majority of our group has been involved with PWF for many years, and represent 4-H clubs from the Kamloops, Barriere, Rock Creek, Westwold, Clearwater, Pritchard and Knutsford areas. Our group is based from a large geographical area and benefits from many members with multigenerational involvement in the fair.

We respect the long history of PWF, and our group is united in the goal to host a community event that celebrates agriculture and youth.

Recently, we have had considerable change in our relationship with the KXA. Historically, the PWF Committee was formed in 1939 and hosted the Annual Provincial Christmas Fat Stock Show and Sale in Kamloops. They continued to hold an annual fair and changed the name in 1961 to Provincial Winter Fair. In or about 1969, the PWF Committee entered into a lease agreement to hold the PWF at the KXA facilities. These facilities offered a great venue, and the fair enjoyed many successful years. During these years, the PWF Committee always planned, directed and operated the fair. In 2010, the KXA and the Kamloops Indian Band were unable to resolve a dispute over the lease of the facilities and payment of taxes. The KXA

was not able to provide a location for PWF, and the PWF Committee moved the fair to the North Thompson Agriplex in Barriere. The Barriere community has been very welcoming and we have enjoyed 5 successful fairs at this location.

Needless to say, the relationship between the KXA and the PWF Committee has become strained. The legal relationship between the two entities between about 1970 and present is currently a matter before the Courts. It is – as it always has been – our position that the PWF Committee was separate from the KXA and was never owned or controlled by the KXA. In the words of Mr. Justice Rogers: “The evidence is not at all clear as to how the business of the (PWF) Committee and the business of the (KXA) became entwined. There can be no doubt, however, that the (PWF) Committee existed as an entity with a distinct purpose prior to becoming involved with the (KXA). There can equally be no doubt that prior to that involvement, the plaintiff did not run the PWF.” Our position in regard to this dispute is a matter of public record; we do not believe it is necessary to summarize the issues between the parties that has resulted in need for the PWF Committee (and indeed six of our members personally) to defend itself in Court, nor do we feel that this would be fair to the 4-H clubs, participants, volunteers and sponsors whose time is properly spent focusing on the joys and benefits of the annual fair. For those interested, our Response to the KXA’s lawsuit and the decision of Justice Rogers quoted above can be obtained at the BC Court Registry under Action No 52840.

We remain confident that we will be successful in defending this lawsuit.

Irrespective of the KXA’s lawsuit, we are steadfast and committed to operating a fair on the traditional weekend for years to come, and will consider relocating the fair to Kamloops if, and when, suitable facilities become available. To this end, on July 7, 2016, Mr. Justice Rogers dismissed the KXA’s application to prevent the PWF Committee from holding a fair in Barriere.

We are pleased with Mr. Justice Roger’s interim decision and look forward to another successful year.

We have continued to plan the upcoming PWF as we have done for years with most of the same volunteers and community support we have appreciated in the past.

We understand the KXA will be hosting its own fair in Kamloops at Circle Creek Equestrian Center - we are sincere in our well-wishes to the KXA and are hopeful for their concurrent success.

Irrespective of any legal action, we strongly want to reassure the community that all sponsorship, entry monies and financial support is going directly to the fair events.

Our legal fees are being covered separately by the volunteers named in the suit and by supporters of our society who directly request to support our legal team.

It is our commitment to the PWF history, 4-H youth, and local community that drives our intent to continue hosting our fair.

We hope to provide a fair for the whole community to come together and celebrate our youth and local agriculture families.

rianne Sheppard and Calli Duncan know creative types don’t all work at an easel — they’re in business, tech, sales and customer service, too.

The founders of Makeshift, a new collective design studio in Kamloops, aim to build a community of artists who might not call themselves one.

Makeshift’s Pinterestinspired workshops cater to anyone with a desire to make things.

At one point, Sheppard favoured the name Makeshift sans the ‘F’ — a description she thought suited their idea well.

“This, I think, is perfect for people who are really into being creative,” Duncan said.

“I think nowadays with work and responsibilities, as we become adults we realize that lots of people need a creative outlet but either don’t have the space or the time or the energy or the money to create their own workshop.”

Both founders relate to such struggles, but have managed to find outlets to suit them.

house is the holy grail of vintage decor — a collection built through thrifting and refurbishing and available for rent.

Sheppard worked in corrections but now runs a photography business specializing in weddings and portraits.

She’s part of the local photographers collective Exposure Kamloops, where Makeshift has found its temporary home.

Duncan and Sheppard envision a similar model for their new business, a dynamic workspace for crafters and designers of all kinds and possibly a retail gallery.

For now, they’re focused on building that community through their party-style workshops, tackling gold leaf, block printing, weaving, wire sculptures, concrete jewelry,

knitting and more.

Eventually they hope to have guest instructors to introduce new techniques: embroidery, brush lettering, calligraphy or spray painting.

“We are going for the more old-school crafts, things that have been done in the past but modernizing them,” Sheppard said, adding all their workshops are test-run and the resulting piece is something they would both want in their homes.

“We see things online like reclaimed wood and pallet boards,” she said.

“But a lot of the skills are harder than they look. We’ve seen the Pinterest fails. It’s easy to mess up.

“We aren’t trying to rule out anyone who doesn’t consider themselves a crafter.”

Sheppard and Duncan are planning to host a crafters social this month, with a new lineup of workshops coming in September.

Costs are dependent on supplies, but have ranged from $40 per person to $55.

They also offer private events starting at $55 per person.

he author of Breaking Away, Patrick O’Sullivan, has given us something unusual.

A book about hockey — not unusual, O’Sullivan played for the NHL, after all.

It’s also about child abuse, a familiar crime.

It’s about sports, money in sports, but corruption is not unusual to hear about.

So what makes this book stand out?

Breaking Away opens with a father in a fist fight. He’s trying to kill his 16-year-old son on the front lawn.

This is the story of a crazed hockey dad who sadistically abused his son.

This is a father who made his boy eat his own vomit when he was displeased.

What kind of man would hate his young and growing son?

O’Sullivan shows us a father who had a nowhere career in hockey.

The result is a burning obsession to compensate for being a loser, making his son the hockey star he failed to be.

A man whose failure in hockey mirrored failure in every department — dismal marriage, nothing jobs, poverty only remedied by cash transfusions from his wife’s parents, who he despised even as he depended on them.

Pathetic.

Breaking Away was written by Patrick O’Sullivan about his experience growing up, playing hockey and facing extreme abuse at the hands of his father.

But few motivations are more potent for a man than the humiliation of failed ambition.

He was the one thing a man must never be — a loser.

This father took control of his boy’s life, beginning in pre–school: He would re-create himself in his son. A boy makeover, a makeover also for the father.

This magical transformation was by force, physical and emotional brutality toward a child.

The boy’s mother and grandparents (on both sides), meanwhile, did nothing.

If he was to com-

mit abuse, let it be his only son — not them — hence exposing the child to feelings of abandonment on top of the bizarre and cruel antics of his father, a stalker obsessed with one thing: making his son a winner.

“When I came off the ice after practice or a game, I never knew exactly what was next, but I knew it was going to be bad.

“While other kids went with their parents to grab a hamburger or ice cream, I’d be looking at an hour or two or more of . . . running the steps in the arena stands . . . or chasing

The stereotypical sports dad shouts at referees and acts like a jerk at games.

He is a man obsessed with competition who thinks winning is the way to heaven and losing is the way to hell.

O’Sullivan shows how scary and damaging this competitionobsessed type of man can be, yet how familiar.

The big question Patrick raises is the most troubling: Why didn’t anyone help him?

The abuse was plain to see.

This is the key point of this riveting account of abuse, survival and fantasy success: a culture that values winning over everything is a culture of abuse.

hen I think of robes and academia, the staff at Hogwarts comes to mind.

Snapes billowing down ancient corridors, bats passing through mournful apparitions and eclectic treasures appearing at every corner.

Then I discovered Portugal’s Coimbra University.

One of the world’s oldest universities (est. 1290 AD) may not offer moving staircases or turreted spires, but Coimbra is said to have inspired some of J.K. Rowling’s imaginings.

The medieval city is Portugal’s original capital and its university, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has traditions that relegate those of Oxford, Cambridge and other Ivy Leaguers to the sidelines.

Located midway between Lisbon and Porto, Viking Cruises has made it one of the most intriguing bus transfers for those on their way to a Douro River Valley cruise.

Robes and ribbons

Voluminous black robes are more than just a force de rigueur.

Understand the symbolism of the cape’s threads, colours and vertical rips and you’ll quickly learn about the wearer’s loves, losses, accolades and achievements.

Coimbra University (above and right) in Portugal is said to have inspired some of J.K. Rowling’s imaginings.

Students wear coloured robes to match their disciplines and bats roam freely in the library.

While badges and crests speak to memberships and interests, the ribbon colour denotes the student’s area of study such as red for law.

Every faculty has a different hue and it’s not unusual for students to wear two or three colours as they progress through multiple disciplines.

The robes’ state of disrepair is especially noteworthy — its thick fabric shredded as if by some wild animal attack. These tears though, are time-honoured imperatives.

Each must be made with hands or teeth — no cheating allowed — and tell the story of support and love.

Friends rip those on the left, family members chew up the right and those at the back show the wearer is in a relationship.

The longer the tear, the more involved the relationship and, should that love end, the rip is sewn up.

Since some cloaks bespoke popularity contests, it’s with relief students celebrate their graduation with a burning fiesta of ribbons and robes that attest to too many broken hearts.

Books and bats

The Biblioteca Joanin is an extraordinary place — three elaborately baroque rooms full of tropical woods, ornamental gilding, frescoed ceilings and about 250,000 books.

Portraits of deans follow you around, with their centuries-old gaze — all very Hogwarts.

Oh yes, and there’s a family of teeny-weeny bats.

With a UNESCO designation no pesticides are allowed, so these bats play a role in controlling pests from nibbling away on old paper and leather.

By day, the bats roost behind the rococo bookcases. By night, they may eat as many as 500 insects apiece.

By morning, they have left a thin layer of droppings over everything.

Before the doors open, floors are scrubbed and may the dean have mercy on anyone who forgot to cover the furniture the night before.

The Pride of Fado

You don’t have to understand Portuguese to know the sorrowful sounds of fado.

Performed by a lone singer accompanied by two guitars, one traditional and one Portuguese, is a teardrop shape with 12 strings. Fado embraces the concept of saudade, a bittersweet yearning for something that cannot exist.

King Afonso VI so disapproved of his son’s romance with Ines he had her murdered, supposedly next to the Fountain of Tears on what is now the Quinta das Lagrimas.

When Pedro succeeded his father to the throne, he took revenge by having the killers’ hearts torn out.

Revealing he had married Ines in secret, Pedro then had her corpse exhumed and crowned, forcing the court to acknowledge her as queen by kneeling before her on the throne and kissing her decomposed hand.

two lovers would immediately see each other.

Both tombs carry the inscription “Até ao fim do mundo” which means “until the end of the world.”

Their story of love, loss and heartfelt anguish is fado personified.

And in Coimbra, where it is only sung by men, fado is relished on street corners and public squares.

The university even has its own fado fraternity and like elsewhere in the country, the traditional costume, unchanged since the 19th century, consists of a black suit with that ubiquitous black cape.

Does God ever change his mind?

S

everal years ago, I was counselling a couple whose marriage was falling apart.

At one stage, I turned to the husband who had been unfaithful to her and asked him: “Do you remember the promise you made to your wife on your wedding day?”

“Of course I do,” he admitted.

“I’m wondering what those promises mean to you now?”

“I guess I have changed,” he said.

Just as a bride and groom stake their lives on a set of promises made at the altar, we can also place our lives in the hands of a God who promises to care for us forever.

How risky a gamble is this? What if God changes his mind?

Let’s apply this question to Prophet Jonah in the Old Testament.

It is one of the shorter

books packed with lessons in faith.

Jonah 3:10 says: “When God saw what the Ninevites did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he said he would bring upon them and he did not do it.”

That may sound straightforward, but it’s not that simple.

Jonah 3:1-9 shows what exactly happened to Jonah. He was a Jew, chosen by God for a specific task.

Like all his contemporaries, he believed

the Jews were the most blessed of all races.

This was one reason he rejected God’s call to go and preach to the people of Nineveh, a sinful gentile city.

It appears he ran away because he was frightened of the pagan Ninevites who would turn hostile to him and the message of God. Jonah could not bear the thought of God’s mercy being extended to the nasty pagans.

He tried to run from the situation, but couldn’t escape God’s hand. He landed in a big fish’s belly for three days and nights.

This story is not about fish, sharks or whales, whatever the large aquatic creature that might have swallowed Jonah. It teaches us about God. When we ask whether God changes his mind, we have to consider what we are asking. Are we wondering he might unexpectedly reject those whom he

had chosen earlier for salvation?

If God acts like that, our secure salvation would be in jeopardy.

How would we feel if we have to share our privilege in Christ with others, especially those we dislike?

Jonah’s story is a humorous way of showing what a mess we get into when we turn our back on God. It also shows how useless it is to try to flee from God. Jonah went to Nineveh, but what did he do there?

He delivered the world’s worst sermon (five words in Hebrew language and eight in English): “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be overthrown.”

No brilliant biblical exegesis. Just eight loaded words. It certainly makes it clear Jonah wasn’t chosen for this mission because he was eloquent.

We can almost see him rolling his eyes as he stood in the middle

of the city and spewed those words.

As soon as he finished, he threw on his backpack, turned from the Ninevites and went to find a seat to watch the imminent display of fire and brimstone to rain upon Nineveh.

For us today, those words would probably be too light, but the effect on the Ninevites was enormous.

“The people of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.”

Most preachers today are delighted if one or two respond to their sermons at the altar call. In Jonah’s case, the entire city turned to God. Does God change his mind today? Yes, he can, provided we change first.

God changed his heart only after the Ninevites changed theirs. He responded with compassion to

those who repented.

This means there must be at least one way to influence God so he lifts his judgmental hand over us.

It is to stop sinning and start repenting.

This should be good news, even today.

But where did Jonah end up?

The world’s worst preacher had just become the world’s most successful preacher. He should have been elated.

But there’s no dancing or praising God emanating from Jonah.

He was neither pleased with God or himself.

The repentance of the Ninevites “was very displeasing to Jonah and he became angry.”

This preacher had an attitude problem.

The only person who enjoyed God’s salvation at the beginning of the story is cursing God at the end.

There is a lesson for us from the life

of Jonah. We need to study the book of Jonah in today’s context.

We live in a world with enemy camps all around us. Tensions and terror are mounting between the good guys — who, by the way, are always “us” — and the bad guys, who are “they.”

We have a vested interest in ensuring our enemies remain enemies.

History has taught us having a common enemy energizes society. Hatred unites people and makes them feel righteous.

Such an attitude complicates our lifestyles, as well as our witness for God and Jesus Christ.

Perhaps the title of this article asks a wrong question. We shouldn’t be asking if God ever changes his mind.

It is a great team sport for boys and girls, from age 6 to 19, offering excellent conditioning, sportsmanship and teamwork. It is one of the least expensive team sports in BC. For younger ages, the season runs from September to November/December. For older ages, it runs from September to February, depending on playoff performance and qualification for provincial championships. There are also Team BC opportunities for the older ages.
