PROVINCIAL COURT
FIRE ON COLUMBIA
Driver fined for killing his former teacher in 2014 accident
Kamloops Fire Rescue crews made quick work of a blaze that broke out at about noon yesterday at the Travelodge Kamloops hotel downtown. Traffic headed westbound on Columbia Street was impacted for about an hour as firefighters mopped up the scene. KFR Assistant Fire Chief Dave McMahon said the fire likely started in the kitchen of the hotel’s restaurant, but the cause remains under investigation. There were no injuries reported.

A Kamloops driver who struck and killed his former teacher on a residential street in 2014 said he thinks about the incident every day. Jordan Jones, 26, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to driving without due care and attention, a Motor Vehicle Act offence. Robert Petersen, a popular city music teacher, died on Nov. 15, 2014, after the bicycle he was riding down Springhill Drive struck the rear quarter-panel of Jones’ car. Court heard Jones was travelling up Springhill Drive, his vision affected by the PETERSEN evening sun low in the sky. He saw two vehicles ahead and thought he could safely turn into a townhouse complex. He did not see Petersen. “He was a well-respected music teacher in Kamloops,” said provincial court judge Stephen Harrison. “It turns out he was tragically known to Mr. Jones and was a teacher to him.” Harrison levied an $1,800 fine, what he said was a large amount for the offence.

Trouble-making residents of problem Brocklehurst home are gone, police say House on 13th Street believed to be linked to gangs was shot at last month Tenants at a 13th Street home who RCMP allege were criminally involved no longer live there, police said yesterday. RCMP responded last month to a report of shots fired at the home in the 900block of 13th Street. A shotgun was found in an alley. Several months prior,
police responded to what was reported as shots fired at the home but was determined to be fireworks discharged from a balcony. One week later, a 41-yearold man was arrested and later released. RCMP said he has links to organized crime. In a statement, Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said “unlawful resi-
dents of a problem residence have moved on.” “Officers found that there were up to five people living in the house without lawful right,” she said. “As a result of the investigation and with the co-operation of the homeowner, it was determined the people causing problems in the home
were not tenants but people using an empty suite illegally.” RCMP visited the house this week to confirm its tenants left the house, owned by local used car dealer Raquel Hernandez-Lazo. No charges have been laid as a result of any police investigation related to the house.
