Across the street, Ribfest brings the heat to Riverside Park Ribfest is back for its fifth edition this summer, running from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Organizers co-ordinate with Hot Nite to give guests a way to hit up both events at once, with a pancake breakfast and some Hot Nite wheels on display to round out the weekend festivities on Sunday.

The event brings about 60,000 people from across the province for a weekend of live music and rib-tasting.

Six champion ribbers hail from across Canada, competing for titles including Best Ribs, Best Sauce and People’s Choice. Vegetarians can enjoy corn on the cob and salad options.

Ribfest is the Daybreak Rotary Club of Kamloops’ biggest fundraising event of the year.

The 2012 inaugural Ribfest was a resounding success, raising $40,000 for Kamloops charities.

Last year, it raised a record $95,000 for various youth organizations.

There will be live music from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. ever day. A large kid zone will be set up with bouncy castles, booths and special entertainment for children.

The kid zone is free, but donations to the Rotary Club are encouraged so it can bring money back into the community.

Charles Stuart bought this truck two years ago.

As a rebuilder, he is running a 6.9 diesel with an ATS turbo kit.

RAT X 4: Cam and Deb Tedford’s DBX Holdings 1940 Ford pickup project started in 2011 with the cab sitting on a 1973 Bronco frame, an old Dodge box and the front fenders bobbed for the tire clearance. A broken small block was in the box, with the 1973 three-speed and transfer case.Five winter seasons (and a couple of donor trucks) later, here it is.Powered by a 1970 302 Ford, the original Bronco three-speed is mated to a twin-sticked Dana T-case, with a nine-inch out back and a little Dana up front. We left the bronze body repair showing — to look like gold nuggets — and made some gun-related mods to go with the “shotgun” dual exhaust. A leather gold and flat black interior with a vintage licence plate headliner finish the old “rat rod” look.

Dave Akehurst and his wife had a 1967 Nova about 35 years ago, but he had to sell the car and a dirt bike to buy their first house.“I cried for about 10 years after that,” Akehurst said. “But the wife said we can always get another car, but not a first house.”

Years passed and it was time to find another car — and this 1966 Chevy II post car was discovered at the naval base in Bremerton, Wash. They bought the rolling shell, got it home and the seven-year build began, including a new floor pan, a new truck pan, four new fenders, new glass and four-wheel disc brakes. Drivetrain: GM 350 small block, 280 comp cam, alum heads, Edelbrock manifold, Holly 650 double pump. HOT NITE IN THE CITY STREET ROD FIRE TRUCK

Kamloops firefighter Jeff Bell purchased the truck in the spring of 2011 from a man in Lumsden, Sask., who did not know much about its history, as the vehicle was his father’s.

The truck was not running, but it had less than 10,000 miles on the odometer.

Bell got the truck home and began the slow process of taking it apart and cleaning up the bits and pieces. Being a three- tonne truck, it had an 85-HP flathead motor and two-speed rear end that was geared very low. The speedometer only went to 60 m.p.h., but the truck probably never crested 40 m.p.h. “That wasn’t going to do as I wanted to drive this truck to work,” Bell said. “I live 35 kilometres from my station, so I was going to have to change the drivetrain to make the commute bearable.” Bell bought a donor one-tonne GMC cube van and used the drivetrain, front and rear suspension, transmission, steering and brakes. He spent the next four winters and some of the summers putting the truck together. “I did all the welding, bodywork, painting, wiring, assembling, bleeding, swearing and spending money,” Bell said. “The goal was to have a truck I can take to shows and cruises, as well as use for parades and fundraising events for some of the Kamloops Firefighters charities.”

HOT NITE IN THE CITY 1984 CADILLAC HEARSE

Scott Tasker became owner of this 1984 Cadillac Hearse in 2014. It was a dream of his since he was a teen as Tasker wanted something different because everybody had a Chevy or a ‘Vette or a Mustang. “I wanted something that nobody had, something that was going to turn heads — and boy does it ever,” Tasker said.

The hearse had 65,000 original miles on it and Tasker put mags and tires on it. In July 2015, he installed a highperformance 454 motor.

Scott and Tammie Williams will be bringing their 1961 Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia to Hot Nite. The body is by Karmann of Germany and the design is by Ghia of Italy. It had one exterior and interior restoration 20 years ago, but retains the original engine and transmission, with only 60,000 miles on both. It gets 37 miles to the gallon and, the Williams say, is “lots of fun to drive!”

Roland Del Guidice first purchased the car in 2011. It was sitting in a Kamloops backyard, wrapped in a tarp: a 1969 Road Runner 383 Magnum four-speed. The car had some rust, but overall was pretty solid. Roland and friend Terry Burkatsky started to strip the car in Burkatsky’s shop and worked on it there for about a year until it was time to do the body work and paint. During that year, the motor was pulled, the interior was removed and the car was stripped to a shell. Then it was off to the body shop for sandblasting, bodywork and paint. At Kamloops Upholstery, Peter and Rudy did a terrific job. The motor went to Jared and Jake Martens at Mister Transmission, where a fantastic job on the engine was completed. Eighteen months later, when the body work and paint job were complete, the car went back to Kamloops Upholstery for a new vinyl top and interior installation. Then it was back to Mister Transmission, where the assembly of the ‘Beeper’ took place, the motor was installed and electrical front to back was done by Steve Derby. “Finally, the day came when we fired up the motor for the first time,” Del Guidice said. “It’s a feeling that everyone should experience. Listening to the roar of a big block Mopar is incredible.” Last minute touch ups included the installation of bumpers, chrome mouldings, etc.

HOT NITE IN THE CITY 1970 BUICK SKYLARK

Cole Mayes bought this 1970 Buick Skylark four years ago with a body-off restoration started on it. The Skylark became the car to scratch another automotive itch he had — a big block Buick four-speed car, so the body-off restoration continued.

The Buick was treated to a GS/ GSX hood, front and rear spoilers, grill, sport mirrors and 15-inch road wheels. The body work was handled by Bill at Apollo Auto Body in Kamloops and painted in GM inferno orange. The sandalwood interior is all new, with a nod to Wallace Upholstery for its work on the seats and head liner. The drivetrain consists of a 1970 vintage Buick 455 cid engine with stage 1 heads, Edelbrock B4B intake and Mikey Thompson super scavenger headers. The transmission is a Muncie M21 four-speed and the rear differential is a GM 12 bolt posi with 3:55 gears.

The Buick stops with frontwheel disc and rear-wheel drum brakes and handles nicely with its factory F41 rally suspension and sway bars.

HOT NITE IN THE CITY 1964-1/2 FORD MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE

Justin Scharien of Kamloops is the proud owner of this 1964-1/2 Ford Mustang convertible, which has 44,000 original miles on her. The car has been in Kamloops for nearly its entire life, leading to some great conversations with people that not only recognize the car, but have even worked on it in the past. Justin inherited the car from his father, Gerry, in the summer of 2014. Gerry acquired it in 2011.

Justin convinced his father to show the Mustang at the 2014 Hot Nite show, paying no mind to the grumblings from the old man over the heat.

In retrospect, it was a wise decision as Gerry passed away four weeks after that year’s Hot Nite. Justin looks forward to showing the car at Hot Nite every year in his father’s honour, as well as sharing old and creating new memories with his children, family and friends for years to come.

HOT NITE IN THE CITY 1951 FORD TWODOOR SEDAN (SHOEBOX)

Tim Vink got the car a few years ago from a fellow car lover in Langley. When he was 12 or 13 years old, Vink’s neighbour owned the coolest vehicle around — a 1949 or 1950 Mercury twodoor sedan, with a chopped roof and fender skirts. It was painted a beautiful dark green. Vink searched for such a car for some time before finding his second choice in this 1951 Ford two-door sedan. The engine/transmission is a Smallblock Chevy 327/turbo 350 transmission, Rochester fourbarrel carb and three-inch exhaust through Smitty’s glasspacks. The body had been de-chromed and some 1949 parts installed. The rear was lowered another inch with threeinch blocks and Vink installed three-inch wide whitewall tires on the front and added some Mooneyes three-bar hubcaps on which he put Cadillac Dome centres. Lake pipes were put under the rockers and Vink installed a sound system, which he said adds to the enjoyment of driving a vintage car on all the long road trips
