How do I Choose a Funeral Home?

To some extent, the public does not always understand or appreciate the many tasks associated with arranging for the final dispostion of human remains and coordinating a meaningful ceremony for the deceased. A funeral director can be involved with completing numerous tasks which can occupy up to 80 hours of time. The services and human resources of a funeral home are continuously available 24 hours per day, answering calls that come at the ring of a telephone or the sound of a doorbell. When choosing a funeral home, there are guidelines to help you with your decision making.

•H ave you met the funeral director in your community?

• Is the funeral home locally owned or belong to a corporation?

• Do you know their personal and professional reputation?

• Do they provide free grief counseling?

• How long have they been serving their community?

• W hat has been the experience of relatives, friends and neighbours?

• Is the funeral home a full service facility and able to handle all of your needs (chapel, visitation room, reception and catering facilities, parking, licensed staff etc.)?

• Is the funeral home a member in good standing with the Funeral Service Association of BC?

UNDERSTANDING FUNERAL COSTS When a death occurs, the matter of funeral costs is often a consideration of the family and those making arrangements.

The majority of costs are represented by professional service, merchandise, final disposition and indirect costs. Services must conform to each individual family’s needs and their personal and religious desires.

All funeral providers are required by law to provide you with an itemized price list of the services and products they offer. They must also provide you with a copy of this price list upon request.

You can make inquiries in person or by telephone. Before you make a decision, however, it is a good idea to visit the funeral home to ensure that you feel comfortable with the services offered and the personnel in attendance.

1 Professional Service Fee:

Professional and personal staff services of a funeral director and staff typically include: Transfer from place of death, obtaining medical certificate of death, completing government forms, registering the death, obtaining necessary permits.

Basic sanitary care of the deceased; embalming, restoration and dressing of the deceased for viewing (if requested); and or as required (e.g. transportation by air). The funeral services contract must include a statement that embalming is not a legal requirement and, if embalming is requested, a space for the written acknowledgement of the purchaser must be on the contract. Note: Embalming may be required if being transported after 72 hours.

Complete personal supervision of all service arrangement details preceding, during and following the services which includes: arrangement conference with family; preparation and placing of obituary notice, consultation with clergy, cemetery and/or crematorium; arranging and caring for floral tributes.

Use of funeral home and all necessary facilities including: arrangement office, reception areas, chapel, selection room, preparation room, parking and services areas. Use of all specialized equipment required for either a church, chapel or other type of service. Use of funeral coach (hearse, limousine, pallbearers car).

Transfer of deceased to crematorium and/or cemetery.

The merchandise purchased for a cremation or burial can vary greatly depending on individual preferences and needs. Funeral providers that have containers and caskets on display are required by law to display their lowest price container and casket. They are also required to have a book or brochure illustrating the entire product line of caskets for sale.

The crops are picked at their peak, and farmstead products like cheeses are hand-crafted for best flavour. Livestock products are processed in nearby facilities and typically the farmer has direct relationship with processors, overseeing quality --— unlike animals processed in large industrial facilities.

The shorter the time between the farm and your table, the less likely it is that nutrients will be lost from fresh food.

Injury Prevention Tips for the Physically Active Physically active men and women come to expect a bump or bruise every so often. Such minor scrapes are often an accepted and inevitable byproduct of an active lifestyle. While broken fingernails or scraped knees are nothing to get worked up over, more serious injuries can sideline athletes and threaten their long-term health.

Though injuries can occur at any time, active men and women can emphasize several preventive techniques to greatly reduce their risk of injury, ensuring they can continue to live active lifestyles into their older adulthood.

Bookending your workout with some low-intensity cardiovascular exercise can reduce your risk of injury and aid in muscle recovery.

Warm up before beginning your workout. Warming up before you dive into your workout can loosen your muscles and increase blood flow. Light cardiovascular activity, such as five minutes of low-intensity walking or running on the treadmill, can be enough to loosen your muscles and get your blood flowing. Warming up may also improve your performance throughout the rest of your workout.

Athletes may also want to cool down at the end of their workouts. Some low-intensity exercise before you call it quits can help your muscles recover more quickly and reduce your risk of injury come your next workout.

Gradually increase intensity when returning to exercise after a layoff. Many men and women make the mistake of diving back into a high-intensity workout after a layoff. If you had to take some time off from working out because of an injury, a vacation or a busy schedule, then your return should begin with low-intensity exercises that gradually increase in difficulty as your body reacclimates itself to exercise. Reduce weight when strength training, gradually increasing weight as you get back into a groove, and make sure your first few cardiovascular or aerobic workouts are less intense than they would be otherwise.

Focus on form. Strength training exercises like weightlifting are a great way to promote long-term bone health and prevent or reduce the severity of osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become brittle and fragile from loss of tissue. But poor form when strength training can lead to injury, including muscle strains and backache. Such injuries can be quite painful and greatly compromise mobility. When strength training, focus on your form. If working out at a gym, ask a trainer or staff member to demonstrate how to use a machine correctly. If working out at home, employ the buddy system so you can have a spotter there to ensure your form is correct.

Stay hydrated. Dehydration can cause serious health problems, so athletes must stay hydrated when exercising regardless of the intensity of that exercise. Exerciseinduced dehydration reduces aerobic endurance and can cause an increase in body temperature and heart rate and even muscle cramping. Though it’s important to drink plenty of water during exercise, it’s also important to drink water prior to exercising. Hypohydration, which occurs when dehydration is induced prior to exercise, can reduce aerobic endurance, making it harder for men and women to achieve optimal results when working out.

Don’t overtrain. When working out, many men and women get into a groove, during which it can be easy to overtrain. But overtraining can easily lead to injury as your body and muscles are not given ample time to recover between workouts. Regular exercise is important, but don’t overdo it. Make sure your muscles have time to recover between workouts.

Accidents happen when living an active lifestyle.

But while there’s no way for active men and women to prevent accidents, they can take steps to reduce their risk of injury when working out.

What Makes a Great Dance School?

There are lots of extracurricular activities for children such as athletics, music and dance.

Because all parents want the best for their children, here are some things to consider when choosing the dance studio that will best fit your – and your child’s – needs.

• W hen you visit the school for the first time, ask a few students what they think.

Ask a few parents, too. Do they think they are getting their money’s worth?

• W hat are the fees? Are there fees in addition to the price of enrollment?

How much can you reasonably expect to pay for clothing and other extras?

• W hat is the philosophy of the dance studio? Is it to teach children how to enjoy dance? How to dance with correct technique? Is it to make the studio look good at competitions?

Teachers

Your child’s dance instructors should be positive, professional and experienced. They should have a rapport with their students that promotes not only technical growth but social and emotional growth as well.

Ask about the dance histories of teachers, including each teacher’s area of expertise, by whom they were trained and who choreographs their dances.

• W hat accomplishments have the teachers attained? Can they teach what they know to others? And are they especially good at working with children? By observing, you can learn whether or not a teacher has a genuine love for children and dance. All of these aspects of the teaching staff should be compatible with the expectations that you have for your children’s dance experience.

Classes

Decide in what type of class you would like to enroll your child. Classes can include ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, modern, lyrical, funk, hip-hop, gymnastics, tumbling, baton and musical theatre.

In addition, make sure that an appropriate skill-level class is offered to match the child’s abilities. Some classes require an audition to place a child where he or she will thrive.

You should also consider the amount of time you are willing to commit to dance. Because many classes culminate in group performances that require rehearsal, a dancer’s presence is imperative.

Look for a studio whose schedule is compatible with your family’s schedule. It is also wise to find out if classes are offered during summer, spring and winter school breaks. These interim sessions can provide an exciting experience for children when school is not in session.

Facility

Your child’s dance studio should be safe, clean, up-beat, student friendly and equipped with the following: • Mirrors to promote confidence and help students improve their technique.

• Suspended hardwood floors cushion and assist moves such as leaps and turns.

They prevent shin splints and alleviate impact to backs, knees and ankles.

• Ballet bars assist in balance when training and learning new moves.

• Age appropriate music.

Discipline

Personal discipline is essential in dance. Part of this discipline is displayed through attire. When studios enforce a dress code, it reinforces this principle.

Q&A with Kelly Eberts, Owner at Snap Fitness Q: Is the recent plethora of new gyms a sign people are concerned about their health?

A: “ I think so. I think it's good. For too long people were just thinking it would sort itself out. I think that really you can never have too many things in a community that ask people to move. I think it's a great sign. For so long Kamloops was so limited for fitness options. Now we have so many great yoga studios. We have two great pilates studios. We have tons of different gyms so people can choose rather than having to go somewhere they don't love because it's the only show in town.”

Q: What role does fitness play in overall health and wellness?

A: “ It's huge. I would say it's 90 per cent of it. Fitness has been shown to decrease symptoms of depression, anxiety, anti-social behaviour and the correlation between endorphins — your happy hormone going up when you move around. But, it's certainly not all of it.”

Q: What is the biggest fitness myth people should know about?

A: “ It's not just calories in and calories out. It's not just a matter of going and eating a Big Mac and then coming to the gym and running for an hour. There's much more to it than that.”

Q: What advice do you give clients about nutrition and dietary health?

A: “ Don’t be a afraid of food. Don’t be afraid to eat. Your body needs food. Your body needs nourishment. There are certainly foods out there that are better than others. Speaking to a professional or doing your own research to the best of your own ability and then having someone look over your meal ideas is a good place to start. But don’t be afraid to eat food!”

Q: What are the advantages of seeing a trainer and what will the results be?

A: “ Guidance and companionship. This is someone who becomes your built-in cheerleader. Just to have someone coach you through your movement, to make sure you are doing it correctly. The results are there because you have someone ensuring that you are consistent and tracking it with you.

A: “ You see yourself every day, so sometimes it's hard to see changes in yourself. But, for someone who has been working with you from the very beginning of your journey, they will see a bigger change in you than you will. It's often encouraging for people to hear that because we are pretty hard on ourselves.”

Q: How often should the average person work out?

A: “ It’s been shown that three days a week for 30 minutes of strength training or even something as simple as going for a 20 minute walk every day will help people improve overall health.”

Q: How do you try to keep people motivated about working out?

A: “ Getting them to focus on their performance rather than their aesthetic is helpful. Oftentimes people have these very unrealistic ideas about body image that the media gives us. Maybe you have been coming for three weeks and you feel nothing has changed and you don't look like Kim Kardashian all of a sudden. That's when people quit.

A: “ So, getting people to focus on their performance is important.

Maybe when you first came all you could lift were five-pound dumbbells and now you're lifting 15 pound dumbbells.

That's a huge accomplishment. Maybe when you first started running you could only run one kilometre and now you're up to three-and-a-half kilometres. Just giving people those performance milestones to work towards is huge.”

Q: What are the benefits of joining a 24-hour gym?

A: “ You can come anytime. If you work strange hours, you can still come to the gym. Statutory holidays — if you wanted to come work out, you're still able to. We're never closed to our members. Also, we don't have a rush of people trying to get in the gym before it closes so it does dissipate people. A good quarter of our members come between the hours of 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. That is 150 people who aren't coming during the day.”

Q: What role does fitness play in your own life?

A: “ It's huge. It's anti-anxiety. It's a stress reliever. It's a great reminder of what my body is capable of doing, not just what it's capable of looking like. It has provided me with a ton of confidence to try things that maybe I never would have done before.

A: “ If I hadn't been physically fit, I probably never would have gone to Thailand and done Muay Thai. I wouldn’t have backpacked around Vietnam. I wouldn't have backpacked around Italy.

I wouldn't have had the confidence in my own body to be able to trust that it would be OK to do those things.”

Q&A From the Expert Staff at Changes What would you recommend for low maintenance cuts, no heat?

What I would recommend for low maintenance cuts is to find a product that works well in your hair and is easy to use. After applying your prep product, I always tend to finger dry the hair so less tools are needed. Maintaining your haircut is important to keep your hairs length and density at it's best!

What product do you personally love and why?

The product I love the most from Aveda is our colour conditioners.

They are my favourite because they help to enhance the hair colour or diminish unwanted tones in hair, depending on which is selected, and to help keep colour fresh between services. Our Black Malva Colour Conditioner contains organically grown clove to help enhance your warm tones. It also uses organic coffee that intensifies brown shades and deeply conditions. It is ideal for brunette, sand and honey shades. Lastly, our Madder Root Colour Conditioner is used to enrich warm tones in chestnut, auburn and red hair. The formula contains madder root which helps purify scalp and hair, as well as henna and other natural colours that help intensify red hues. Conditioners are applied to cleansed hair for 2-5 minutes every 2-4 shampoos for consistent lasting colour enhancement.

What's your favourite thing about the hair industry?

There is so much to love about the hair industry! Not only is it super creative and fun, but you also get to work with so many incredible individuals on a daily basis. Every guest that sits in your chair trusts to your creativity and professionalism to give them the best haircut.

In the world of Aveda, we are given so many opportunities to advance our education and travel, keeping us satisfied, up-to-date, and to give that "best haircut in the world" feeling and experience. As a hairstylist, this is what we love the most - the fact that we get to continually learn to provide our guests with the best services we can offer.

What mistakes do you see happen most often, and how can people avoid them?

The mistake that I see most often is the use of thermal styling with temperatures too high without heat protection. To avoid unnecessary heat damage always set your iron to the appropriate temperature for your hair type. Make sure your iron has a temperature gauge and watch carefully - 450 degrees is excessive heat for someone with fine hair. To help prevent damage use a thermal protectant - I prefer products that go in damp hair like our Aveda Daily Damage Hair Repair. Leave it in and use a lower iron temperature to help prevent heat damage, especially if you use hot tools on a daily basis. To treat hair damaged from either heat or colour, the protein must be repaired. When the protein in hair is weakened gaps can form in the strand leading to a higher chance of breakage. I recommend a protein product that fills holes over time.

There are protein shampoos, conditioners and treatments that can add protein back into hair. My favourite is our Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair - it is a thermal protectant that uses quinoa protein to fill in damaged cuticles to instantly repair, as well as help protect against heat styling. It also contains soy oil to de-tangle and prevent breakage. It uses certified organic oils including bergamot, mandrain and ylang ylang.

Is there a recommended time between cuts and colour?

The recommended time between cuts and colours would typically be between 6-8 weeks. I would recommend about 4-5 weeks. The shorter your hair is, the quicker you will notice growth! With some of the more modern trends like balayage and ombre you may go longer between cuts and colour as these styles are meant to look 'lived in'.

Top 10 Consumer Questions Question: I always seem to get blisters. Why is that?

Answer: This is one of the top questions we get asked! Blisters are caused by friction or movement. The two most common causes we see are: 1) shoes that aren’t tied properly, and 2) cotton socks.

While cotton breathes well, it doesn’t wick moisture away. A foot that’s wet or damp is much more likely to blister.

Question: My toenails go black/ blue when I run. What’s with that?
