SANDMAN HIP TO FINAL CONCERT?

Kamloops Mounties bag a shotgun found in an alley behind a home at 900 13th Street on the North Shore. Police were called to investigate a report of shots fired. There were no injuries and as of KTW press deadline yesterday, no arrests or charges. The home has been in police crosshairds at least twice this year, including a May 6 raid that led the seizure of thousands of dollars worth of drugs.

Those who attended the Tragically Hip concert in Kamloops in September could not have known it would be their last chance to see the band play live in the Tournament Capital. Lead singer Gord Downie has since been diagnosed with incurable brain cancer and the Hip are in the midst of their farewell tour, the Man Machine Poem Tour. The South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton will broadcast the Hip’s final show, a gig on Aug. 20 in the band’s hometown of Kingston, Ont., that will be aired live on the CBC. KTW asked Jeff Putnam, parks and civic facilities manager for the City of Kamloops, if a screening at Sandman Centre is in the cards. “At this time, I have nothing to announce formally, but there has been lots of internal discussion and we hope to come forward with more information in the near future,” Putnam said. An announcement is expected soon.

Shots fired at address familiar to Mounties TIM PETRUK STAFF REPORTER tim@kamloopsthisweek.com

Kamloops Mounties are investigating after shots were fired early yesterday morning at a Brocklehurst home believed to have ties to organized crime. RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said police received multiple reports of shots fired in the area of 13th Street and Tranquille Road at about 7:30 a.m. Shelkie said witnesses saw three suspects running from the residence just after the shots were fired. “The only definite description available at this time is that all three were wearing hoodies,” she said. “We attended and we found that the shots had been fired at a residence on 13th Street.”

See footage at kamloopsthisweek.com Shelkie said no one was injured, but three people were detained and later released. No arrests have been made. Police seized a shotgun that was apparently found in an alley behind the home, which is at 900 13th St. “The residence was previously known to police and we believe it was a targeted incident,” Shelkie said, adding there is no danger to the general public. On May 6, police executed a search warrant at the home. At that time, a 41-year-old man with

ties to organized crime was arrested, according to police, and investigators seized thousands of dollars worth of drugs. A week earlier, police were called to the home for a report of shots fired. It turned out the shots were actually fireworks being set off on the home’s balcony. In May, KTW spoke to neighbours living in the area of the home. Rob, who asked that his last name not be published out of concerns for his safety, said he noticed issues with the residence in the last two years. “Young fellows moved in, had nice cars, never seemed to work,” he said. “Then cameras started going up. It’s always a concern, especially when you see in the news that these idiots also carry weapons.”
