A Kamloops man accused of beating an 18-year-old high school student into a coma last month after finding him on or near his Brocklehurst property will have to wait another week to find out whether he will be granted bail.

Kristopher Teichrieb, 39, is charged with attempted murder in relation to the June 19 beating of Jessie Simpson.

His bail hearing began on Monday and wrapped up on Thursday.

Evidence presented at the hearing is protected by a court-ordered publication ban.

Kamloops provincial court Judge Stephen Harrison is expected to give his decision on Teichrieb’s bail on

Thursday, July 28.

Teichrieb is accused of beating Simpson with a baseball bat after finding the teen near or on his property.

Simpson’s friends and family have said he was celebrating high school graduation with classmates on June 18 and may have been trying to find a group of friends when he was beaten.

Simpson has been on life support since the incident. Defence lawyer Jeremy Jensen has suggested the charge against Teichrieb could be upgraded to murder if Simpson succumbs to his injuries.

Teichrieb was arrested just after 5 a.m. on Father’s Day after police were called to a reported altercation in the area of Holt Street and Clifford Avenue. Simpson’s friends and family have said he was beaten with a baseball bat.

Police initially said Teichrieb had confronted someone in the driveway of his Clifford Avenue home.

At a candlelight vigil on June 26, Simpson’s aunt described his condition as “grave” and said it had not changed since he was admitted to Royal Inland Hospital.

Police have said Simpson has not been able to verbalize anything to investigators. It is unclear if Mounties know why Simpson was on Teichrieb’s property, if he indeed was.

The altercation took place on Holt Street. Teichrieb’s home is on nearby Clifford Avenue.

Teichrieb is a father of three with no criminal record and the owner of at least two construction firms. Simpson lives in Savona and was graduating from South Kamloops secondary this year.

A charge against a Kamloops woman accused of killing her newborn son more than four years ago has been reduced as her preliminary inquiry approaches.

Courtney Fawn Saul had been charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of her son, George Carlos Saul, on Dec. 15, 2011. She is now charged with infanticide, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, as opposed to an automatic life sentence for a second-degree murder conviction.

Court has previously heard Saul’s son was killed within hours of his birth.

Saul was 19 at the time of her son’s death.

Last year, she was ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment under a specific section of the Criminal Code that deals with mothers alleged to have killed their newborns.

The goal of the assessment was to determine whether Saul was “disturbed” at the time of her son’s death.

The results of that assessment have not been made public, but Saul is slated to appear in Kamloops provincial court for a three-day preliminary inquiry beginning on Aug. 16.

Preliminary inquiries are hearings at which a judge determines whether there is enough evidence for a matter to proceed to trial.

Saul is not in custody.

Water Demand Modelling The City of Kamloops, in partnership with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Kamloops Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture and Community Futures Thompson Country, has conducted a water demand modelling exercise and soil analysis for the City’s agricultural land base.

This project is funded in part by the City of Kamloops, Community Futures Thompson Country, Yellowhead Community Services as well as Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the BC Ministry of Agriculture through federal-provincial programs delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC. The water demand model is a water management planning tool that calculates current and future agricultural water demands for areas within the Agricultural Land Reserve and areas zoned for agriculture within the City.

But the smell emanating from the site on Long Lake Road is not the foul stench of chicken manure — it’s the pungent aroma of a lot of green marijuana.

“We get lots of calls about it because you can smell it,” acknowledged RCMP Staff Sgt. Doug Aird.

On the exterior of the quonset hut building at 40 Edith Lake Road, at the corner with Long Lake Road, are at least 10 air conditioning units.

Next door, at 100 Edith Lake Rd., is a metal-clad barn that formerly housed

Floritto’s operations.

Today there are seven companies certified to grow medical marijuana in B.C. by Health Canada, part of 31 nationwide.

Through mail order, they supply patients who have a marijuana prescription from a physician. This is the only strictly legal way to obtain medical marijuana in Canada — though a grey market is flourishing under the eyes of police and governments.

Under the old rules,

in B.C. alone about 16,000 licences existed in 2013 for personal or designated-person production. The Knutsford operations exist under these now-defunct licences.

While they are no longer recognized under new law, the old production licences remain in limbo after a federal court judge struck down a prohibition earlier this year against patients growing for themselves.

But through property title and company searches, Kamloops This Week spoke to the owner of one property and a company that has an option to purchase the adjoining lot and is operating as the landlord.

100 EDITH LAKE ROAD Derrold Norgaard, chief financial officer at Green Sky Labs Inc., said it has a tenant at the 10,000-square-

foot metal-clad barn growing marijuana for two people under the MMAR rules. The company is acting as a landlord for the property, which it has a legal agreement to purchase.

According to land title documents, it is currently owned by AQ Holdings, registered to director Quan Anh Le. A phone number listed on AQ Holdings’ filings comes back to a Lower Mainland accounting firm. A person who answered at the accounting firm said it has no information on AQ Holdings and does not act as a mailing address for clients.

Green Sky said it is acting in an ownership capacity for the property, even though it is

not listed on title.

“The tenant provides us with information on what’s happening there,” Norgaard said.

“I know what we have: A tenant that’s adhering to the rules.”

Norgaard said Green Sky currently provides third-party testing for licensed growers and has extraction technology for cannabinoids, a process it licences and is conducting in Amsterdam.

He said Green Sky has a provisional licence with Health Canada as an accredited marijuana lab.

It wants to build on that accreditation by becoming the province’s eighth authorized producer under the

new rules instituted in 2013, with production at the Knutsford property as well as in Barriere.

“The town [Barriere] is quite comfortable with our program.

RCMP is quite comfortable. Health Canada, I believe, will be comfortable with who we are,” he said.

While Norgaard said he is unaware of any relationship to what appears to be the larger grow operation next door, KTW contacted Green Sky by speaking with a man who appeared to be residing in a trailer next door.

pany — which lists son Amyn as a director (he is also a director on the B.C. Egg Marketing Board) — sold the next door property at 100 Edith Lake Rd. several years ago.

He said his tenant has a production licence and is insured.

He acknowledged there is a connection with his tenant at Green Sky’s property next door but he does not know the exact nature.

“We don’t hide anything,” he said. “There is our building and we rent it out.”

The company still produces eggs at three other properties in Knutsford, but has moved its sorting, crating and packaging to the Lower Mainland.

‘AN OPEN SECRET’ Under the old

MMAR rules, a Health Canada representative said a designated producer can provide for up to four medical marijuana patients.

Courts have struck down any maximum per patient.

“It’s an open secret people get licences for way more than one human could possibly use,” said city lawyer Shawn Buckley.

“That was the police concern and drove the new regulations.”

Buckley said with as many as 16,000 licences still existing under the old rules, including for more than 2,000 designated producers, the obvious conclusion is they are supplying marijuana dispensaries.

“I think a lot of it is ending up in cannabis clubs,” he said.

Cheetie Malouin,

who operated Kamloops Dispensary Services before shutting down at the end of last month, said her supply came from “LPs” — licensed producers under the now defunct MMAR rules. Licensed producers include the two operations on Edith Lake Road.

“All my stuff was from licensed producers — they’re everywhere,” she said.

“Every single day I had someone [LP] at my shop: small, big, Vancouver and up North.”

The Knutsford operations do not require business licences within the ThompsonNicola Regional District.

The use is allowed under zoning because the parcels are within the Agricultural Land Reserve.

HOT: The province’s real-estate market.

The B.C. government took in more income tax, sales tax and property transfer tax than it budgeted last year, leading to an operating surplus of $730 million for the fiscal year ended March 31.

The focus is on the government’s windfall from a sizzling realestate market, with property transfer tax revenue up $468 million over the previous year, according to audited year-end figures released yesterday by Finance Minister Mike de Jong.

That’s good news for the province’s bottom line and not-so-good news for those poor souls in the Lower Mainland (and, increasingly, elsewhere) trying to vain to get into the housing market.

NOT: The cretin who walked into the PetroCanada gas station this week and robbed the place.

It wasn’t enough for the bandit to grab cash and lottery tickets. He had to prove his nastiness by hitting the poor clerk in the face with a baseball bat.

Based on the number of stalls (350) and the rejigging of various parking lots on the hospital site, the new facility is supposed to help ease the extremely congested situation that exists there.

We will take a wait and see attitude to determine if the round-andround circus of vehicles becomes a thing of the past.

That would be the camp on Lelu Island where a splinter group of Tsimshian tribal members and supporters maintain an effort to blockade and disrupt testing required for an environmental permit application to construct a liquefied natural-gas terminal.

Stanley tweeted a picture from the camp, looking past a Mohawk warrior flag at the coastline. “So inspired by these defenders of land, water and salmon,” she wrote.

Wilberforce, the Californiabased Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Hawaii-based Sustainable Fisheries Partnership and others have poured money into anti-LNG campaigns in B.C. as they funded opposition to oilsands development before them. Indeed, the record suggests the long project to establish what environmental front groups named the Great Bear Rainforest was a strategy to stop hydrocarbon exports from Western Canada, even as U.S. sources ramped up production.

So what’s been going on at this “science program” on Lelu Island?

Its own multi-media promotion material provides some glimpses, featuring sweeping allegations and efforts to block scientific evaluation with crude threats and intimidation.

One man, identified as Donald Wesley Jr., walks the island with a rifle over his shoulder. Among his claims is that the drilling isn’t for testing, but is actually the start of construction on the Pacific Northwest LNG terminal, which still awaits a decision from the Trudeau cabinet.

Wesley says that since crews didn’t present permits to him personally, “they’re the radicals.

They’re the extremists. They’re the terrorists.” Then he describes his preparations.

“We have a lot of stuff on the island to keep [away] helicopters and drillers, the geotech drillers that want to come onto the island and start borehole testing,” he says. “We have a lot of spikes put on this island.”

OK, who’s the extremist?

The video series is co-produced by a fellow named Tamo Campos, identified as representing Beyond Boarding, with a link to an expired website.

Campos came to prominence in B.C. protest circles during the

recent oil pipeline standoff at Burnaby Mountain. He appeared with his grandfather, David Suzuki, and other well-known protesters in a carefully choreographed show of entering a courtordered restraining zone and briefly being arrested.

Again, they were interfering with authorized scientific testing while attempting to create the impression for media of grassroots opposition.

Wesley, his father Donald Wesley Sr. and a supporter from Hartley Bay named Matthew Danes claim to represent hereditary chiefs. In June, a dozen Tsimshian hereditary chiefs and elders issued a letter stating that Wesley Sr. “took it upon himself to occupy Lelu Island solely on his own accord” and doesn’t represent the community.

“We do not appreciate Mr. Wesley inviting environmental militants and outsiders into our territory without the respect and manners dictated by the protocols of our ayaawyx [laws],” they wrote.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office required Pacific Northwest LNG to consult with five aboriginal communities. The Metlakatla, Kitselas, Kitsumkalum and Gitxaala bands have benefit agreements for the project. The lone holdout, Lax Kw’alaams, elected a new council last fall that embraced the project with conditions.

A WEEKEND INMATE’S EXPERIENCE IN KRCC Editor: Re: (‘Weekend inmate fails in bid to leave Kamloops prison,’ July 19): We have all heard the horror stories: prisoner thrown into an overcrowded cell and left there for days with little sustenance, no bed to sleep on, intimidated by guards — only in the Third World, right? Wrong. These are the conditions I was subjected to at Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre two weekends ago.

A sentence in the KTW story is incorrect and I would like to set the record straight.

I was sentenced to 14 days, to be served on weekends, as a result of a driving offense. As a result of my misspent youth, this was not my first time in jail and my expectations were based on my previous experience 20 years ago. At that time, I was placed in a regular unit with a cot, adequate bedding, a partitioned toilet and regular meals.

I had always gotten along with the guards, at no time felt intimidated and had never been placed in solitary confinement.

I reported to KRCC on Friday, July 8, at 6 p.m., but was soon horrified to find things were different at that facility. After a delay in processing, I was placed with other prisoners in lock-up, a temporary holding cell.

One inmate was in a state of drug-induced psychosis and was removed for medical treatment, leaving me with two others. The three of

us were left in this cell for the remainder of the weekend: a small, 10-foot by 10-foot cell with one bench and an open toilet.

We were each given thin mats and a blanket, but no pillow. We slept both nights on the floor.

At no time were we allowed out of the cell for exercise and, over the three days, we were given three cold and mushy meals. When I complained about the food, I was told by one of the guards I needed to “learn respect.”

An hour later, six guards entered the cell, handcuffed me and pushed my face into the corner of the wall, despite the fact I was not resisting and told them repeatedly I wanted to comply with their directions.

I was then strip-searched and thrown into solitary confinement. An hour later, their supervisor entered and apologized for his guards’ behaviour and I apologized for my comment about the food.

I was told that if I wanted to register an official complaint, I could get the paperwork from the guard against whom the complaint would be lodged. I declined this offer.

I want to explain the reason for my application to Crown counsel on July 15.

Unbeknownst to the sentencing judge, guards who restrained me or prisoners who shared the cell, I have had extensive reconstructive surgery on my face, leaving me vulnerable to further injury.

In fact, I was told by my surgeon to imagine

my face as glass, living in a world of rock. KRCC is, indeed, a world of rock, where the slightest misstep while I slept on the floor or a forceful push of my face against a wall could be fatal.

Please note I did not tell Crown counsel that guards had “smashed my face into the wall” as reported in KTW because if they had, I would be dead. Unfortunately, Crown counsel did not give me the opportunity to explain the overcrowding and resulting substandard conditions at KRCC, along with aggressive behaviour of the guards, caused me to fear for my life should I return for my second weekend.

In fact, Crown counsel cannot change a sentence imposed by another judge, which makes me wonder why I was even brought before him to request home arrest or probation. With no revision in my sentence, I chose to breach my conditions and did not report to KRCC that evening.

Instead I will turn myself in and expect a change in my sentence to consecutive days. As suggested by my lawyer, I will bring paperwork verifying my facial and other injuries and hope for placement in a regular cell.

As I stated in court, I am willing to atone for my driving infractions, but not serve a death sentence due to over-crowding and over-stressed guards at KRCC. Michael Walsh Kamloops

With the recent spate of vehicle breakins in Kamloops, RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie took local media on a tour of the downtown Thursday, checking parked vehicles to get the word out to Kamloopsians to do their part to stem such thefts.

Foot patrol constables Jason Epp and George Buttuls, along with members of the downtown Customer Care and Patrol Team, met to show how common it is to

spot vehicles left unlocked — including one with a wallet and backpack in full view on the front seat.

Shelkie said Mounties receive as many as eight to 10 reports of vehicle break-ins over a 24-hour period, with 80 per cent of those vehicles being unlocked.

“People with no source of income or who supplement their income by vehicle break-ins are mostly involved,” she said.

The message the RCMP wants to get out is for people to remove not only valuables from vehicles, but also the simplest

of items thieves will smash a window just to look into, believing there may be something of value.

Items like plastic bags, envelopes, loose change and blankets covering something on a rear seat will attract attention.

On the brief walkabout with media, Mounties found money, golf clubs and a gift left inside unlocked vehicles.

The message is to lock items out of sight or, better yet, remove them altogether.

Burglary, hit and run lead to arrest A 27-year-old Kelowna man is behind bars after being arrested early yesterday morning as the suspect in two crimes in Kamloops.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said the man is facing numerous charges stemming from a burglary of a drug store and a hit-and-run incident involving a pickup truck and a semi-truck.

“The driver of the pickup had hit a semi-truck, then struck a cement traffic barrier before departing the scene without stopping,” Shelkie said, noting the pickup truck was found a short time later in Aberdeen.

The man suspected of being the driver of the vehicle was found in a nearby home.

“Evidence found led police to believe that he was both the suspect in the hit and run and also the break and enter to Shoppers Drug Mart,” Shelkie said.

The man was arrested for break and enter and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

A former high-profile Kamloops Mountie accused of dealing drugs while a member of the national police force has yet to show up in person for a court appearance.

When Gracyn Sieracki heard first heard about Camp Got2Go, during one of his monthly rounds of treatment at the B.C. Children’s Hospital, it was an opportunity too good to pass up.

The Alberta-based summer camp brings together youth aged 12 to 17 from across Western Canada who live with Crohn’s disease — a chronic condition that can cause abdominal pain, fatigue, internal bleeding and diarrhea.

Though the disease is fairly common in Canada, with 1 in 150 people diagnosed, Gracyn hadn’t met many people with it in the two

years since he was first diagnosed, and no one his age.

“There’s an instructor — I do Taekwondo — but he’s 50. He has Crohn’s, but there’s no one in my age group,” Gracyn said.

Soon, he was shooting an application video in the hospital with an IV needle still in his arm. On Sunday, he will join more than 50 other teens for a week away from home.

“It’s not just a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity for him, it’s a chance to see other children who may be as sick as him, more sick, they may have colostomy bags, who knows?” said mom Carmen.

“I think it’s going to be a good eye-opener for him and a chance

to get some pen pals and make some lifelong friends.”

While Gracyn, 12, has spent two years in treatment for the disease, Carmen said he hasn’t gone into remission yet, meaning her son still often deals with pain and fatigue.

That can make camping hard, as can the increased bathroom trips common with Crohn’s.

“It takes a lot of extra attention to make sure he has everything he needs,” she said.

The trip will also be Gracyn’s first time away from home on his own for this many days.

While he admits he’s nervous, he’s also looking forward to the experience.

“I’m excited,” he said.

et us suppose it is July 2017. Let us suppose Donald Trump, nominated as the Republican candidate for the U.S. presidency exactly a year ago, won the November election (quite narrowly, perhaps, but the polls are certainly suggesting such a thing is possible).

So, he was inaugurated six months ago and has started to put his campaign promises into effect.

We may also assume the Republican Party retains control of both houses of Congress. If it doesn’t, then Trump’s ability to execute his plans would be seriously circumscribed, but the surge of support that gives Trump victory would probably also give the Republicans a win in some close Senate races.

The Republican majority in the House of Representatives, thanks to extensive gerrymandering, is practically fireproof.

Trump’s three most disruptive campaign promises were also the three that had the most appeal to his core voters and he is implementing them fast.

They are: a 40 per cent tariff on all foreign imports, an end to free trade deals and tight curbs on immigration — especially the famous “wall” on the Mexican border.

It won’t actually be a wall, of course. It will be the kind of hightech barrier countries build when they are really serious about closing a frontier. There will be a ditch about three metres deep and 10 metres wide extending for 3,000 kilometres along the U.S.-Mexican border.

It will have a three-metre-high razor-wire fence along the front edge of the ditch, facing Mexico, and another along the back edge.

The front fence has a highvoltage current running through it. The back fence carries the

There are also land mines down in the ditch. Why is it so lethal? Because long experience has shown the only way to really close a border is to kill people who try to cross it.

The “wall” is not yet finished in July 2017, of course. It will take several years to complete, at a cost of $30 to $50 billion. Already, however, there are daily deaths among the tens of thousands of Mexican protesters who gather at the construction sites — and a few among Mexican-American protesters on the other side of the fence.

The Mexican government, faced with economic disaster as the millions of manufacturing jobs created in Mexico to export back to the United States evaporate, has broken diplomatic relations with Washington, as have several other Latin American nations.

Negotiations for a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership between the U.S. and European Union have broken off and the Trans-Pacific Partnership will never be ratified by Congress. The legislation for a 40 per cent tariff on foreign imports is still making

its way through Congress, as is the bill to end the North American Free Trade Agreement (which is causing panic in Canada, 73 per cent of whose exports go to the U.S.).

The new laws will go through in the end and the most important casualty will be U.S.-China trade (as Trump fully intends it to be).

China is already in a thinly disguised recession and the impact of the new trade measures will turn it into a political crisis that threatens the survival of the Communist regime.

Beijing will certainly respond by pushing forward with the proposed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which would include sixteen nations of the Asia-Pacific region but exclude the U.S. However, it may also manufacture a military confrontation with America to distract popular discontent at home with a foreign threat. The dispute over the South China Sea would do nicely.

The European Union, still in shock after Britain’s Brexit vote in 2016, has been further shaken by the near-win of Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far right, anti-EU National Front, in the May run-off of the French presidential elections.

In the U.S., the economy is still chugging along despite the stock market crash of November 2016.

Trump’s big increase in the military budget, his huge expansion of infrastructure spending (with borrowed money) and the rise in the minimum wage have kept the machine turning over for the time being.

The effect of declaring a trade war on the rest of the world is not yet being felt at home — but it will be. And it’s only July 2017. Trump still has another three-and-a-half years in the White House. gwynnedyer.com

Strangers brought strength to Baillie’s family THE CANADIAN PRESS

CALGARY — The family of a mother and her five-year-old daughter slain last week says it is overwhelmed with the support it has received from Calgary and beyond.

Speaking before the funeral service for Sara Baillie and Taliyah Marsman on Thursday, Baillie’s mother said hundreds, if not thousands, of supportive strangers have taught the family how to be strong.

“We are, of course, overcome with grief by the unnecessary loss of two beautiful members of our family,’’ Janet Fredette read from a family statement.

“Despite our grief we are also overwhelmed by the strength that this community has given us.

The Calgary Police Service, our friends and hundreds, if not thousands, of unknown community members have shown us how to be strong.

“Thank you for your support Calgary, Alberta and Canada.’’

Baillie, 34, was found dead in her northwest Calgary home on July 11, but Taliyah was missing and an Amber Alert was issued.

The little girl’s body was found later in a rural area east of the city.

A Calgary man, Edward Downey, faces two counts of first-degree murder. Police said he knew both Baillie and Taliyah, but it’s not clear how.

An obituary said mother and daughter were inseparable and described Baillie as a dedicated mother who had an unflinching love for her daughter.

It said Taliyah, who recently finished kindergarten and had just learned to ride a bike, was a funny girl who never left home without her sparkly purse filled with lotions and lipsticks.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Missing Children’s Society of Canada.

CALGARY — The scale of work disruptions from the Fort McMurray wildfire is being born out in employment insurance numbers from Alberta that show a record level of applicants.

Statistics Canada says EI applications soared 70 per cent from April to May for a 22,800 increase in what it says is the largest monthly gain in any province since it started tracking the numbers in 1997.

Actual EI recipients jumped 12.1 per cent in May from a month earlier to 77,800, the largest increase since June 2009.

The Wood Buffalo area that was hardest hit by the wildfire made up a third of the increase after seeing a 142 per cent spike to 4,500 recipients, while Edmonton saw an 8.4 per cent jump and Calgary a 6.8 per cent rise.

Alberta’s numbers made up most of the national increase in EI claims, which were up 23,300 to 264,200 for May. Overall, 544,900 people received regular employment insurance in Canada in May, up by 0.9 per cent from April.

WINNIPEG — The trial of a Winnipeg woman accused of concealing the remains of six infants in a storage locker is on hold until the end of August.

The judge wants written submissions from both

sides on the issue of spousal privilege, and how much the husband of the accused can be required to disclose about communications with his wife.

Andrea Giesbrecht was arrested in October 2014 after the remains were found in plastic containers in a storage locker she rented.

Medical experts have testified the infants were at or near full term, and some of the remains were very decomposed.

Giesbrecht’s husband, Jeremy, testified this week that he was unaware of the storage locker and of the six pregnancies that the Crown says led to the infant remains

being hidden.

Spouses can agree to waive their right to privilege and testify about communications with their partner.

At issue is whether Jeremy Giesbrecht can agree to testify about only some discussions with his wife or whether that would open the door to all discussions.

OTTAWA — Canada weighed in yesterday in the ongoing South China Sea dispute, with a thinlyveiled call to China to abide by an international ruling that has angered Beijing.

While the statement from Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion doesn’t name China, it appears aimed at the country, which is angry after an international panel rejected much of its maritime claim. The Hague panel that administers the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea sided last week with the Philippines and rejected much of the legal basis of China’s claim.

The maritime dispute has implications for Sino-Canada relations at a time when the Trudeau government is seeking to make economic and political inroads with China.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is bound for China later this summer for the G20 leaders’ summit, after having appeared to reboot relations with China last fall during his first meeting with President Xi Jinping.

But Canada’s recent decision to side with G7 ally Japan on the maritime tensions, as well as disagreements with China over human rights, are complicating those aspirations. Dion reiterated Canada’s commitment to “the maintenance of international law and to an international rulesbased order for the oceans and seas’’ in helping resolve the six-country dispute.

“Whether one agrees or not with the ruling, Canada believes that the parties should comply with it,’’ Dion said Thursday.

“We are deeply concerned about regional tensions that have been escalating for a number of years and have the potential to undermine peace and stability,’’ he added.

The South China Sea is one of the world’s busiest trade routes, which is significant for Canada as it tries to deepen its economic footprint in the region through the 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership and other bilateral deals.

Halifax police are investigating a fifth sexual assault involving a cab driver and say the suspect’s description raises the possibility of a connection with other recent attacks.

“There’s some similarities in some of the suspect descriptions, so we’re looking at . . . the possibility that there could be the same individual in some of the instances, at least,’’ said Halifax Regional Police Const.

The most recent incident, reported on July 19, is the fifth alleged sexual assault since May in which a victim described being assaulted by a cab driver.

A woman told police she was picked up in Halifax between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on July 15 by a man driving a car with a roof light.

The vehicle was a white, older-model four-door car.

Upon arrival, the woman asked how much she owed and the driver said he was having problems with the meter that would take a few minutes to fix.

Then police say the man tried to kiss the woman, locked her door and touched her in a “sexual manner’’ over her clothing without her consent.

The woman was able to get out of the car and get to a friend’s home.

Police say the man spoke with an accent and wore strong cologne.

He was described as about

five-feet-seven-inches, with short dark hair and a pronounced nose.

Police also said the man was described as “possibly of Middle Eastern descent,’’ an identifier used to describe the suspect in three prior incidents. Critics have said police should avoid the label, as it perpetuates damaging stereotypes and is too vague to be of use as a descriptor.

Woodworth said investigators are following down every available lead, including trying to track down taxi locations at the times of the incidents, where possible.

“Some of the vehicles — I’m not saying the ones involved with this — have GPS, so we’re running all those angles, and working with the cab companies,’’ she said.

Feds look to keep criminals, spies out of travel programs THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA — A criminal conviction could make you ineligible for membership in a trusted traveller program like Nexus under planned new rules that clearly spell out what will stop people from joining — or get them kicked out.

The Canada Border Services Agency has launched a month-long consultation on the proposals to tighten eligibility.

Trusted traveller programs are intended to speed the flow of low-risk, known citizens across borders by steering them into express queues, giving security officers more time to focus limited resources on those who may pose a higher risk.

Nexus, with about 1.2 million members, is jointly administered by the Canadian and U.S. border agencies.

Currently, someone must be “of good character’’ to be a member.

Under the amendments, that provision would be appealed and replaced with a detailed list of eight criteria — from a drug smuggling conviction to espionage allegations — that could prevent membership.

MONTREAL — Air Transat’s president says the carrier will compensate all passengers booked on a flight disrupted when two pilots were arrested on suspicion of drunkenness.

European Union rules stipulate a passenger is enti-

tled to 600 euros in the event a flight longer than 3,500 kilometres is cancelled.

The airline confirmed the pilots arrested in Scotland have been suspended at least until the end of an internal investigation.

“The issue of the July 18 arrest of two Air Transat pilots

in Glasgow is a complex one and because the matter is the subject of judicial proceedings in Scotland, the airline will not comment at this point,’’ the statement said.

C

atharine Pendrel and Emily Batty will experience a dynamic few will ever understand, the quagmire of being teammates, friends and rivals at the Olympic Games.

They want the same thing — gold in Rio on Aug. 20 — and they might have to go through each other to get it.

“Both of us want to be the best in the world,” said Pendrel, who at 35 is seven years older than Batty. “We keep pushing each other and it’s motivating. Every year, it gets closer and closer.”

Pendrel, a Fredericton native who lives in Kamloops, and Batty, from Brooklin, Ont., make up Canada’s two-person female cross-country mountain biking team for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games and are seventh and ninth, respectively, in the Union Cycliste Internationale women’s elite rankings.

They are the best this nation has to offer and results this year — including Pendrel’s secondplace standing after four of six World Cup events and Batty’s bronze-medal finish at the world championship earlier this month — prove both are Olympic medal contenders.

The two are roommates once or twice a year at international

competitions, have had training camps together, are friendly with each other off the course at cycling events and get along just fine. But they might know each other better as competitors.

They’ve been going head-tohead at the elite women’s level for about six years.

“Being able to race against each other for so long, you kind of learn each others’ strengths and weaknesses,” said Batty, who was in Colorado training when she paused to speak with KTW. “It’s been to our advantage because we’re alway trying to . . . you know, you want to be national champion, so you have to work that much harder to get that title.

“But we’re pretty good at turning it off. We’re absolutely good friends off the bike.”

Both experienced wretched letdowns four years ago at the London Olympics.

Pendrel, ranked No. 1 in the world at the time, underperformed and finished ninth.

Three days before race day, Batty flipped over her handle bars in a training run, breaking her collarbone and a rib in the process.

Amazingly, she still managed a 24th-place finish.

“It was devastation and heartbreaking,” said Batty, knocking on wood and noting that was the first and only serious injury of her

career. “I’ve never really understood why that happened, but I’m a really strong athlete all-around because of that. It was a catastrophe. I hope Rio goes nothing like that.”

Pendrel has long since rebounded from the anguish of four years ago. She won her second world championship in 2014, placed second and fourth overall in the 2014 and 2015 World Cup standings, respectively, among many other accomplishments.

Batty has experienced unprecedented success in her career since the 2012 Games,

tions, enjoy the experience of being Canadian Olympians together once more and, yes, they will speak to each other on race-day morning, Batty said.

But 45 minutes before start time, each will become fixated on their own dream, which might only be reached at the costs of the other’s.

“Once we start warm-up, it’s full independence,” Batty said.

“It’s all about you in that moment. You’re going for a medal for the country, but it’s an individual race.”

“When it comes down to where you need to make your move based on your strengths, it’s kind of everyone to yourself at that point,” Pendrel said. “That’s what we train for. That’s what we race for. Mountain biking isn’t a team sport.”

There is one scenario all Canadians, including both riders, want to see.

“If it was her and I coming to the finish line, Jesus, that would be the perfect scenario,” Batty said. “If we got Canada gold and silver, that would be the dream come true.”

Pendrel has been in Kamloops training since July 11 and will remain here until Aug. 3.

The local hero’s regimen includes riding a stationary bike in front of her furnace to simulate blistering Rio heat.

The fifth World Cup race of the season, in Mont-Saint-Anne, Que., on Aug. 7, will act as the final major tuneup before the Games.

Pendrel will spend a few days riding in Ontario after that before hopping a flight to Brazil on Aug. 12.

“When you’re under high stress, it’s easy to start doubting yourself,” said Pendrel, who placed fourth at the 2008 Games in Beijing, nine seconds out of medal position. “It’s putting in the work to remind yourself of everything you’ve done, of how capable you are, so when you’re under high anxiety, you have all these experiences you can draw upon to enable you to get the job done when it matters.”

The plan for Pendrel this time around is to put much less pressure on herself than she did in the lead-up to 2012 — and she feels that goal has been accomplished.

Much of Batty’s mental strength comes from her husband and coach, Adam Morka, a former high-performance cyclist.

“He keeps me grounded,” she said.

Pendrel has been a role model of sorts to Batty, much as retired Canadian rider MarieHelene Premont, an Olympic silver medallist, was a role model to Pendrel.

Kelly Olynyk was bolting back and forth between courts inside the Tournament Capital Centre Fieldhouse, yelling instructions and passing on basketball knowledge he learned playing at the game’s highest level.

Westsyde secondary student Kyle Sandher was among those soaking in advice from the seven-foot Boston Celtics’ star, who will return for his fourth season in the fall after recovering from shoulder surgery.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Sandher said. “He’s a real good teacher and he’s good at explaining things.”

The fourth annual Olynyk Klynyk, a fourday basketball camp for students entering Grades 8 through 12, wraps up today at the TCC and TRU Gym. Olynyk, a crew of fellow pro players, including former South Kamloops Titans Josh Wolfram and John Bantock, along with family, friends and local coaches, have spent four days coaching about 82 campgoers.

Much like Sandher, most of the students want to come back next year.

“I’m taking away the new skills and moves, just the things he’s taught me this year,” Sandher said.

tion inside the JP Gym and South Kam’s main gym.

The camp moved to the TCC and TRU gyms last year and 90 students were in attendance, a touch too many, Olynyk said.

“We toned it down and went to about 80 or 82 this year,” Olynyk said.

“We think it’s almost a perfect number, to give the kids the best experience we can and the most one-on-one time, where they’re not standing around.

“You’d be hard pressed to find staff with this much experience and talent at any camp across Canada.”

The former Gonzaga Bulldogs’ standout seemed fully immersed on both the first and last days of the 2016 Klynyk, happy to be there giving back to the community.

“I couldn’t do any of this without my family and people like Emma Wolfram,” Olynyk said.

“They have done an unbelievable job running the camp, with registrations, being here early and we have a great package for the coaches and the kids, where they get stuff from sponsors.

“I kind of just show up and look like a hero.”

And the hero plans to be back for Year 5.

“I love it,” Olynyk said. “It’s really special to come back here and give back to this community that raised me.

VIOLENT ROBBERY On Tuesday, July 19th at approximately 7:30 pm a lone male entered the Petro Canada gas station on Sydney Ave and demanded the attendant open the cash register. The suspect then hit the attendant with a baseball bat in the face when he opened the register. The male then grabbed some cash, lottery tickets and fled the store.

TWO SUSPECTS INVOLVED IN THEFTS On Thursday, June 23rd, two suspects were involved in numerous thefts from a store on Victoria St. These two had a plan and took advantage of the businesses “sidewalk” sales event. They would wait until the store clerk was serving another customer, then they would help themselves to items on the clothing rack. What these thieves did not realize was they were caught on

and unshaven and was wearing a ball cap with the words “Blue Jays” on it, sun glasses, black jogging pants and had black gloves on.

The direction of travel is unknown, someone may have been around the store and have noticed this male, leaving the area or you may know who this person is.

There are more question marks surrounding the 2016 Kamloops Broncos than there are Pokemon milling about Vancouver Island.

The new-look junior Broncos, under secondyear head coach Brad Yamaoka, will provide a few answers tomorrow against the Raiders in Nanaimo in Week 1 of the B.C. Football Conference campaign.

“I feel good, but I’m obviously nervous,” said Yamaoka, who will get his first taste of life without the likes of graduated offensive standouts Stephen Schuweiler, Cameron Brown, Devin Csincsa and Derek Yachison.

“Week 1 is always tough. We don’t have any film. We’re basing things on what they did last year. It’s growing pains for us at this point. It’s going to take us a little bit to get going.”

There are two more season-opening BCFC matchups this weekend — the Westshore Rebels of Langford will play host to the Langley Rams and the Okanagan Sun of Kelowna will travel to Chilliwack to square off against the Valley Huskers.

The Broncos are searching for their quarterback of the future, with Schuweiler out of the mix.

Candidates include Colby Henkel and

Sebastian Bel, both of whom will likely see the field tomorrow.

“We really just have to see how the game goes,” Yamaoka said.

“It’s going to come down to who can handle the pressure and who can manage the football game well.

“They both do things really well in practice and both have hiccups.”

Henkel and Bel — and the rest of the Broncos’ roster — have a lot to prove and each player will be thrown into the fire tomorrow.

Can Anthony Arduini remain calm under pressure and launch pinpoint punts? How will defensive end Tevin McCarty and the Broncos’ defence look?

They’re supposed to be the strength of the team this year.

The Raiders have a new defensive co-ordinator in Doug Hocking, a former teammate and roommate of Yamaoka’s with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, so they might

look a touch different on that side of the ball.

“Offensively, they’re going to be fairly similar to last year, but you never know,” Yamaoka said. “We have to prepare for everything.”

Vancouver Island is usually a BCFC powerhouse and it posted a 7-3 mark in regularseason play last year.

The Raiders edged the Rams 28-27 in semifinal action before running into the Sun buzzsaw in the league championship.

Okanagan ran through Kamloops in the other semifinal, annihilating the local squad 75-7 in a laugher.

The Broncos finished the 2015 regular-season slate with a 5-5 record.

But the slate is blank now, at least for another day.

“The goal is to win and end up in the playoffs and to eventually host a national final here in Kamloops,” Yamaoka said. “Is that realistic? I’m not 100 per cent sure, but that’s what we’re aiming for.”

He learned that there are shadows In spite of shining sun.

The more he grew, he found that life Was never always fun.

The unicorn tried tirelessly, And gave the climb his best; But he felt it was not good enough, He felt he’d failed the test.

In innocence and beauty, He danced through woods and streams.

The animals danced with him, His heart aglow with dreams.

For now he’d learn of feelings That come from deep within; No longer in the “dream world” Where (for so long) he’d been.

He could not understand it When he felt himself rejected – When all his gentle being asked Was but to be accepted.

He laughed and played with rainbows, So happy all day through, He loved to kiss the flowers As their petals shone with dew.

His gentle heart desired But to know the pleasure of To give and to receive The very precious gift of love.

All this was just too much for him, He knew not what to do.

That he was special as himself, Somehow, he never knew.

He wandered through the meadows In the moon’s soft, silver light.

He loved to gaze at all the stars That lightened up the night.

To love meant to be happy, And yet it also brought him pain; For those he loved could hurt him Again.. and yet again.

His spirit crushed, he felt defeated, And lonely tears would start.

Not understanding how to love, It simply broke his heart.

He listened to the music Of the birds that graced the trees.

He frolicked with the butterflies And raced the gentle breeze.

His mother held him lovingly And tried to ease his fears About the sadness life could bring...

The lonely, bitter tears.

But now he’s in a loving place Where all his pain has ceased, Where all accepted him and his love, Where all he knows is peace.

But, as he grew and learned of life, The sparkle in his eye Grew misty as he realized Just what it means to cry.

She said, “Life is like a mountain, (And surely this is true) That we must climb as best we can.

Kirsten Atkins has up-cycled all her life.

“Mostly because, where do these things go otherwise?” she said.

Atkins tries to reduce how much heads to the landfill, but has other reasons to use used.

“These sweaters have been through a whole entire life. They’re not going to bleed, they’re not going to shrink, they’re not going to get holes in them,” she said.

The fabrics are easily manipulated and the quality of older garments is higher than what is mass-produced today, Atkins said.

“The quality of materials right now have gotten so bad,” she said. “Knits, T-shirt fabric, how thin they are.”

hen a friend brought over a couple of handme-down sweaters, Kirsten Atkins’ daughters weren’t interested in adding the pieces to their wardrobes.

As a seamstress, however, Atkins saw beauty in the pink and brown hues of the used garments and wanted to keep them for herself.

There was only one problem — they didn’t quite fit.

“So I thought, ‘Oh, it can’t hurt,’” Atkins said, “so I cut them up and I made this really funky cardigan with

long sleeves and uneven hem.”

She received many compliments on the sweater, a style she described as influenced by a mix between fairies, elves and hippies, and her daughter liked it so much she ended up stealing it, prompting Kirsten to focus her sewing skills on creating more like it.

She has never quite recreated the same cardigan — being made from used clothing, they turn out different every time — but she has been selling carrousel coats and pixie jackets under the label KLA Originals for about five years now: online, at festivals and at a gift shop

in Salmon Arm. In order to keep up her supply of materials, Atkins fostered a relationship with the local hospice and secured more hand-medowns.

“I’ve been trading,” she said. “I give them finished jackets for their fundraising and they’ve been saving me sweaters that they don’t have room for in their store, which is really nice.”

She runs them through a hot cycle with special products to take out “that thrift store smell.” Then the creating begins.

Each piece takes anywhere from four to 16 hours and Atkins works on one project at a time

until it’s finished.

“Sometimes they make themselves. Sometimes they go bang, bang, bang, they’re done,” she said.

“It’s like they have a personality, it’s crazy. Other times they fight me.”

Darby Mills, lead singer of the Canadian rock band The Headpins, bought one and Atkins nearly cleaned out her inventory at a recent Scandinavian festival in Burnaby. Visitors to Canada Day Art in the Park may have seen her work on display, as it has been for the last four years during the annual celebration.

to quit working for other people and set up shop in her Brocklehurst home, designing dresses and making alterations to round out her services.

Part inspiration for her work, Atkins’ daughters model her designs.

“They work for Slurpees,” Atkins said with a laugh.

Dressing the part Atkins learned to sew in high school, which led her to create Halloween costumes and eventually rent them out.

“I was getting a little bit of a tickle trunk and my friends started borrowing them,” she recalled.

“One day, somebody

said, ‘Hey, you should start renting these.’”

That led to the beginning of a 28-plus-year career that has since included creating costumes for theatre, designing up-cycled jean jackets, corsets and grad and wedding gowns.

Atkins hails from the Yukon and made costumes for the diamond tooth gurdies in Dawson City.

Her grandfather was a tailor. And, while she may have inherited his skills with a sewing machine, her grandmother said she has more imagination.

Atkins moved to Kamloops in 2008 because her partner needed medical care.

Review: Munsch not just for tots JESSICA KLYMCHUK

unsch Upon a Time is classified as children’s theatre. But, considering some of Robert Munsch’s classics date back to the 1980s, it’s not just tots who will enjoy watching his tales come to life.

I recently found myself reviewing the author’s catalog, reminiscing about some of my favourites — 50 Below Zero, Thomas’ Snowsuit, Mortimer and the tear-jerker I’ll Love You Forever.

None of those are included in playwright Debbie Patterson’s Munsch, which sees three characters from different decades come together to tell five of his best-known stories.

But being unfamiliar with a couple of books didn’t lessen the enjoyment — the author’s unmistakable tone makes each story a delight and there were many from which to choose.

Consistent with director Mack Gordon’s desire to keep things a surprise, I won’t tell you

which ones Patterson included.

The stories are woven together with the help of Prof. Pimm’s time-travel machine, hilariously portrayed by two porta-potties thanks to set designer Jared Raschke.

The kids howled with laughter at the flushing sound effects and Andrew Cooper’s Pimm was equally humorous. Cooper is quickly becoming a fan-favourite amongst Kamloops theatregoers for his animation on stage — and he didn’t disappoint.

He’s joined by Randi Edmundson as hippy-girl Patsy from 1976 and Melissa Thomas as germ-fearing Fullerton from 2046. They find a commonality in books — hence their desire to tell Munch’s stories — but this theme is reached a little late.

Early on, the link between the characters and the stories is a bit of a stretch.

The highlight, however, was puppets designed by Edmundson. The set for the play is minimal, but the various quirky props made for many laughs — from kids and parents alike.

Project X found unique, simple ways to illustrate Munsch’s words. One scene included two rolls of toilet paper and a blowdryer to make smoke, which I found incredibly amusing.

As is characteristic of children’s theatre, audience participation was included and the kids were eager to get involved.

The three cast members worked cohesively, multi-tasking on stage. They’re used to it, considering all three, plus Gordon, are also involved in X-Fest’s The Wizard of Oz. Edmundson’s puppets also make an appearance there.

My first attempt to see Munsch was cancelled due to rain, but with good weather in the forecast, X-Fest should see a full week of successful performances. Munsch Upon A Time and The Wizard of Oz continue in Prince Charles Park until July 30. Nightly performances start at 7 p.m., with matinees on Saturdays and no shows on Sunday. Local theatre companies join forces Two theatre companies in the city are joining forces to create one larger entity that will continue to provide entertainment throughout the year.

Project X and Chimera theatres will be merging in the fall, creating a-yetunnamed new troupe of performers.

Melissa Thomas will remain artistic director, while Project X general manager Dusan Magdolen will become

managing producer.

Andrew Cooper, artistic producer of Chimera Theatre and an artistic associate with Project X, will become the artistic producer of the new company.

The two boards of directors will also be brought together to provide governance and committees will be looking for new members. They include grants and sponsorships, fundraising,

community engagement, finance, special events, marketing, production, volunteers, education, multimedia, improv and new work.

The merger comes from the realization there has been growing overlap between the two theatres.

It’s seen as an opportunity for Project X to continue to grow and for Chimera to build its financial support.

X Fest will remain a key component, but plans are to provide theatre, educational opportunities and other events. Chimera, for example, has a series of improv performances it does throughout the year.

The merger will be celebrated on the last day of X Fest, July 30 at 9 p.m. after the final presentation of the Wizard of Oz at Prince Charles Park on Columbia Street.

Size of community doesn’t dictate strength of arts scene

'll admit it: before I moved to town almost five years ago, “Kamloops arts and culture” weren't words I'd ever considered stringing together.

OK, so I was a Vancouver snob.

Kamloops wasn't on my radar. As far as I was concerned, the big city was where it was at.

In any given week, I had my pick of gallery openings, book launches, concerts, plays, dance performances and films to attend.

Then, suddenly, not even a plethora of activities could make up for Vancouver's traffic, cost of living or rain.

Two summers in the Yukon made me realize the size of a community had nothing to do with the strength of its arts scene.

(Tiny Dawson City, for example, has 2,000 residents year-round and is well known for its music festival and cultural activities. It sees 60,000 tourists each season — triple the population of the entire territory.)

In a stroke of randomness I soon realized was good fortune, I landed in Kamloops

Without a job and with an eye to staying in this lovely, liveable place, one of the first things I did was sign up to volunteer, both at Arnica ArtistRun Centre at the Old Courthouse and with Western Canada Theatre.

That was just the start of an incredible discovery: for a city its size, the Kamloops arts scene is vast.

In addition to a professional theatre company, symphony and nationally renowned gallery, Kamloops hosts a bevy of festivals, galleries, studios, workshops, choirs, dance and music schools, a nightly summer music

series, open mics, street performances, house concerts, a film festival, an art battle, two museums and much more.

Last I counted, Kamloops is home to a whopping eight theatre companies.

Try Art in the Park (recently, on July 1), Artisan Square (Saturdays), Artisan Market (Thursdays), the Courthouse Gallery Co-op and The Art We Are, to name but a few.

There's more developing all the time.

The brand-new Kamloops Komedy Festival ran from July 14 to July 16.

Today, as someone who makes it her business to be in the know, I'm repeatedly — and pleasantly — gobsmacked by how much I don't.

Kamloops, we've got a lot going on — and much of it is free, lowcost and accessible.

So why had I never heard about it before I moved here?

It's time we shared our rich arts scene — not only with our neighbours here in town, but

with the world.

According to Statistics Canada, the direct economic impact of culture industries nationally was $61.7 billion in 2014 or 3.3 per cent of the country’s GDP. In fact, according to Hill Strategies Research (hillstrategies.com), “the GDP of culture industries is much larger than the value added of agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting ($29 billion), accommodation and food services ($38 billion) and utilities ($43 billion).”

Interesting facts to ponder as our city continues to grow.

We know Kamloops is the Tournament Capital.

But with so much happening, why can't we be an arts and culture destination, too?

All it would take is a little creative imagination — and the willingness to explore, promote and champion the vast talent in our own backyard.

Element Music Festival set to launch in inagural year THE MERRITT HERALD

ust south of Merritt, a musical festival that seems to be taking a page from the movie Field of Dreams. If you build it, they will come.

Located between Merritt and Princeton, 750 Pike Mountain Road is being transformed into what will be the site of Element Music Festival — a three-day music and camping event that is hosting its inaugural event July 29 to July 31.

The 157-acre property on which the festival will be held was purchased last year with the hope of developing it into a premier outdoor venue and campground.

Duggan said shower facilities and a general store are planned for the future.

Element is taking place the same weekend as the Merritt Rockin’ River Music Festival. If country music isn’t your thing, Element offers almost every other type of music.

On tap will be 14 musical acts — many of which are B.C. based groups — including Five Alarm Funk, Kytami with Phonik Ops, Adham Shaikh and Outworld Orkestra and The Big Easy Funk Ensemble.

800 attendees are expected.

The lineup of musical performers for the inaugural festival is expected to appeal to a broad range of the roots, groove, funk, folk, jazz and reggae music lovers. Music fans from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, the Okanagan, the Kootenays and the northwestern U.S. are expected to make up the weekend’s audiences.

The event will include one main stage, with smaller workshop and performance areas, as well as a vending village filled with food, arts and crafts, and a kids zone that includes storytelling, puppetry and face painting.

“We figured we’d just go through this first year as a bunch of friends putting it on,” said one of the founders, Keith Duggan, who has worked in the events industry for 25 years. Duggan said the past year has been spent installing ‘structural infrastructure’ to the property.

He said they purchased a modular stage to set up for year one, but the long-term plan is to build three amphitheatres of various sizes on the property.

Duggan described developing the property as a five-year project.

“We’re going to do what we can year to year. This year there’s been a lot of infrastructure that we’ve been

Are pigeons taking over the suburbs?

Q: I live in Aberdeen. Starting a few years ago, I began to hear what I thought was the unmistakable sound of pigeons.

I’ve only seen them around commercial buildings and I don’t think a neighbour is harbouring any.

Are they taking over the suburbs?

The incessant cooing is up there on the irritation scale, along with crows and magpies.

A: What you’re likely hearing are Eurasian collared doves. Native to South Asia, the birds have spread throughout North America after a release in the Bahamas in the 1970s, according to the B.C. Bird Atlas.

Local birder Rick Howie estimated collared doves arrived in the city about

a decade ago and have rapidly spread to many corners.

“They’ve been breeding for six or seven years and the population is just exploding,” he said.

The Bird Atlas estimates Eurasian collared doves are breeding as far north as Atlin Lake, in B.C.’s extreme north. Like pigeons, rats and crows, the doves thrive around human settlement.

Despite the abundance, Howie hasn’t seen signs the birds are pushing out native species — in part because they prefer habitats close to homes.

They feed on seeds, fruits and insects. Unlike pigeons, Eurasian collared doves tend to nest in trees, rather than buildings.

Annual summer book club opens the page The Kamloops libraries are offering their annual summer reading club again this year with the theme Book A Trip.

The club is open for children and teens and is

designed to motivate them to read or be read to regularly during the summer. Activities at the two branches are also held throughout the summer.

to keep track of the books read, as well as a sticker to be placed in the record for every seven days they read. Those who do so for seven weeks will receive a special medal.

y significant other and skipper, David Dossor, loves munching kippers or a ploughman’s lunch while sipping ales on tap in Britain’s historic old pubs.

Our friends, Gerry McKeating and Pat Crossley, are avid and expert birders who have come on this trip specifically for the best bird watching in the country.

One-quarter of the country’s rare wildlife and flora exist in the Broads, Britain’s largest protected wetland.

I love wandering through ancient ruins: crumbling abbeys and standing stones, shards of castles and historic landmarks, awed at tangible presences of our species’ long history.

So we indulge each of our passions while traveling through scenic fertile flatlands abloom with yellow canola blossoms, barley and vegetable crops with a cow or five dotted in to make the pastoral landscape iconic and all this aboard a luxurious 45’ cruiser.

It has to be the most perfect trip imaginable.

The Norfolk Broads have a long history and the list of reasons to visit this lowlying region in southeast Britain is just as long.

Our travel was decided: the best way to visit the area was to meet it right where it lives — in the water.

the four of us to spread out.

After spending our first night at the base trying to decide which of the three staterooms to take, becoming familiar with our yacht and burning the sausages, we’re now keen to begin our zigzag journeys up and down the Rivers Thurne, Bure and Ant.

It will be a leisurely nineday meandering that will take us to Horsey Mere and home to one of many wind pumps, built to drain the marshlands.

Hickling Broad, the bird watchers paradise, is next.

While the three of us are polishing up our binoculars and hoping to spot a Cetti’s Warbler or Marsh Harrier, David is calling The Pleasure Boat Pub to reserve for dinner and mooring, already anticipating trying each of its four award winning ales.

We tie up at the yacht station for two days of wandering on Yarmouth’s endless beaches and immerse ourselves in the past, from The Tolhouse, one of the country’s oldest gaols built in the 12th Century, to the maritime and fishing history at Time and Tide Museum.

The Broads is the name given to this low-lying region in southeast England that in the 12th Century was the most densely populated and intensely farmed area in the country.

When wood ran out and another source of fuel was needed, peat digging became widespread. Flash forward two centuries and

the rising ocean levels have filled the immense holes and the profitable industry is scuttled.

However, the resulting channels become arteries of commerce and the beginning of what will become a new enterprise is slowly becoming apparent — recreational boating on the more than 200 kilometres of semi saline lakes and rivers.

Leaving Great Yarmouth, we make our way to the River Ant to Stalham and the granddaddy of all museums, the extensive Museum of the Broads.

At this point, I think it’s day five. We enjoy leisurely visits to market towns like Horning and Wroxham to buy fresh early produce and sit down for a British tea.

We ogle and photograph archeological treasures like the ancient church at West Somerton and the ruins of St. Benet’s Abbey in South Walsham, where later that day we stroll in the extensive Fairhaven water garden.

And there’s only one day of May rain.

On our eighth night out, we drop our anchor into the four-inch depths of South Walsham Broad and cook our last meal onboard. Over our perfect sausages, we toast our holiday, an immersion into a Britain few ever experience.

We may not have covered much water, but we’ve thoroughly plumbed its depths.

Does God ever change His mind?

S

everal years ago, I was counselling a couple whose marriage was falling apart.

At one stage, I turned to the husband who had been unfaithful to her. I asked him: “Do you remember the promise you made to your wife on your wedding day?”

“Of course I do,” he admitted, clearly bothered I had asked him the question.

I continued: “I’m wondering what those promises mean to you now.”

He shrugged his shoulders and said, “I guess I have changed.”

Just as a bride and groom stake their lives on a set of promises made at the altar, we can also place our lives in the hands of a God who promises to care for us forever.

How risky a gamble is this? What if God changes His mind?

Let’s apply this question to Prophet Jonah in the Old Testament.

It is one of the shorter books packed with lessons in faith.

Jonah 3:10 says: “When God saw what the Ninevites did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed His mind about the calamity that He said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.”

That may sound like a straightforward answer to our question, but it’s not that simple.

Jonah 3:1-9 shows what exactly happened to Jonah.

He was a Jew, chosen by God for a specific task.

Like all his contemporaries, he believed the Jews were the most blessed of all races.

This was one reason why he rejected God’s call to go and preach to the people of Nineveh, a sinful Gentile city.

It appears he ran away because he was frightened of the pagan Ninevites who would turn hostile to him and the message of God.

I believe Jonah could not bear the thought of God’s mercy being extended to the nasty pagans.

He tried to run away from the situation, but couldn’t escape God’s hand. He landed in a big fish’s belly for three days and nights.

This story is not about fish, sharks or whales, whatever the large aquatic creature that might have swallowed Jonah. Its purpose is to teach us about God. When we ask whether God changes His mind, we have to consider what exactly we are asking.

Are we wondering whether He might unexpectedly reject those whom He had chosen earlier for salvation?

If God acts like that, our secure salvation would be in jeopardy.

How would we feel if we have to share our privilege in Christ with others, especially those we dislike?

Jonah’s story is a humorous way of showing what a mess we get into when we turn our back on God. It also shows how useless it is to try to flee from God. Jonah went to Nineveh, but what did he end up doing there?

He delivered the world’s worst sermon (five words in Hebrew language and eight in English): “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be overthrown.”

No brilliant biblical exegesis! Just eight loaded words.

It certainly makes it clear that Jonah wasn’t

chosen for this mission because he was eloquent.

We can almost see him rolling his eyes as he stands in the middle of the city and spews out those words.

As soon as he finished, he threw his backpack on, turned from the Ninevites and went off to find a comfortable seat to watch the imminent display of fire and brimstone to rain upon Nineveh.

For us today, those eight words would probably be too light, but the effect on the Ninevites was enormous.

“The people of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.”

Most preachers today are delighted if one or two respond to their sermons at the altar call. In Jonah’s case, the entire city turned to God. Does God change His mind today? Yes, He can, provided we change first.

God changed His heart only after the Ninevites changed theirs. He responded with compassion to those who repented.

This means there must be at least one way to influence God so that He lifts His judgmental hand over us.

It is to stop sinning and start repenting.

This should be good news to us all, even today.

But where did Jonah end up? The world’s worst preacher had just become the world’s most successful preacher.

He should have been elated. But there’s no dancing or praising God emanating from Jonah. He was neither pleased with God or himself.

The repentance of the Ninevites “was very displeasing to Jonah and he became angry.”

This preacher had an attitude problem.

The only person who enjoyed God’s great salvation at the beginning of the story is cursing God at the end.

There is a lesson for us from the life of Jonah. We need to study the book of Jonah in today’s context.

We live in a world with enemy camps all around us. Tensions and terror are mounting between the “good” guys — who, by the way, are always “us” — and the “bad” guys, who are “they.”

We have a vested interest in making sure our enemies remain enemies. History has taught us that having a common enemy energizes a society.

Hatred unites people and makes them feel righteous.

Such an attitude complicates our lifestyles, as well as our witness for God and Jesus Christ.

Perhaps the title of this article asks a wrong question. We shouldn’t be asking if God ever changes His mind.

Instead, we should ask ourselves whether we are willing to change.
